LUXURY PACKAGES

Galapagos group travel and charters – galapagos islands customized tours.

Are you planning a Galapagos trip with a big group? Whether it’s a family reunion, a business retreat or small group project, or a special occasion like an anniversary, chartering a cruise can be a great way to share these moments with family, friends, and colleagues.

And don’t let the price tag scare you – if you’re splitting it between all members of the group, the cost per person is right around what you’d pay for a single Galapagos cruise ticket anyway. And if you’re footing the bill alone, the value of chartering a cruise is definitely there.

So what does chartering a Galapagos yacht mean? Essentially, you are renting out the entire cruise for your group . Since only a few Galapagos yachts offer this option, it’s just a matter of choosing which is right for you. That’s where we can help – putting together the list and helping determine which yacht would best serve your purposes. Just let us know the details and we’ll put all the information together.

And when it comes to the yachts that are available for charter, they are all in the luxury class, meaning that you can count on world-class service and comfort, top naturalist bilingual guides, gourmet menus, and hand-crafted itineraries.

Keep in mind that the yachts that do offer this option tend to accommodate between 16-24 passengers , so if you are inviting fewer, the cost per person is naturally higher, and if you have more than 24 people, consider booking rooms individually on a larger Galapagos ship or a land-based tour.

By chartering a cruise, you’re ensuring that your Galapagos experience is an intimate one, shared with only those who are in your group . In addition to the privacy and exclusivity of a privately chartered vessel, you guarantee your group undivided attention from the service team, private transfers and land transportation, and customizable itineraries geared specifically towards your group’s interests, whether it’s birdwatching, snorkeling, photography, volunteering, or dining.

Plus, like all Galapagos cruises, a charter cruise is all-inclusive – from the moment you arrive in the Galapagos Islands, your transportation, food, accommodations, daily excursions and activities, and all service is already factored into the trip price.

For Galapagos group travel, charters also offer a great alternative to land-based tours because they take the hassle out of the logistics and coordination of the planning process, they guarantee private, shared space for your group at a lucrative group rate, and give you access to the more remote destinations in the Galapagos beyond the main islands of San Cristobal, Isabela, and Santa Cruz.

Just let us know when you’re ready to start talking about your Galapagos charter!

Christopher Columbus

By: History.com Editors

Updated: August 11, 2023 | Original: November 9, 2009

Christopher Columbus

The explorer Christopher Columbus made four trips across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain: in 1492, 1493, 1498 and 1502. He was determined to find a direct water route west from Europe to Asia, but he never did. Instead, he stumbled upon the Americas. Though he did not “discover” the so-called New World—millions of people already lived there—his journeys marked the beginning of centuries of exploration and colonization of North and South America.

Christopher Columbus and the Age of Discovery

During the 15th and 16th centuries, leaders of several European nations sponsored expeditions abroad in the hope that explorers would find great wealth and vast undiscovered lands. The Portuguese were the earliest participants in this “ Age of Discovery ,” also known as “ Age of Exploration .”

Starting in about 1420, small Portuguese ships known as caravels zipped along the African coast, carrying spices, gold and other goods as well as enslaved people from Asia and Africa to Europe.

Did you know? Christopher Columbus was not the first person to propose that a person could reach Asia by sailing west from Europe. In fact, scholars argue that the idea is almost as old as the idea that the Earth is round. (That is, it dates back to early Rome.)

Other European nations, particularly Spain, were eager to share in the seemingly limitless riches of the “Far East.” By the end of the 15th century, Spain’s “ Reconquista ”—the expulsion of Jews and Muslims out of the kingdom after centuries of war—was complete, and the nation turned its attention to exploration and conquest in other areas of the world.

Early Life and Nationality

Christopher Columbus, the son of a wool merchant, is believed to have been born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451. When he was still a teenager, he got a job on a merchant ship. He remained at sea until 1476, when pirates attacked his ship as it sailed north along the Portuguese coast.

The boat sank, but the young Columbus floated to shore on a scrap of wood and made his way to Lisbon, where he eventually studied mathematics, astronomy, cartography and navigation. He also began to hatch the plan that would change the world forever.

Christopher Columbus' First Voyage

At the end of the 15th century, it was nearly impossible to reach Asia from Europe by land. The route was long and arduous, and encounters with hostile armies were difficult to avoid. Portuguese explorers solved this problem by taking to the sea: They sailed south along the West African coast and around the Cape of Good Hope.

But Columbus had a different idea: Why not sail west across the Atlantic instead of around the massive African continent? The young navigator’s logic was sound, but his math was faulty. He argued (incorrectly) that the circumference of the Earth was much smaller than his contemporaries believed it was; accordingly, he believed that the journey by boat from Europe to Asia should be not only possible, but comparatively easy via an as-yet undiscovered Northwest Passage .

He presented his plan to officials in Portugal and England, but it was not until 1492 that he found a sympathetic audience: the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile .

Columbus wanted fame and fortune. Ferdinand and Isabella wanted the same, along with the opportunity to export Catholicism to lands across the globe. (Columbus, a devout Catholic, was equally enthusiastic about this possibility.)

Columbus’ contract with the Spanish rulers promised that he could keep 10 percent of whatever riches he found, along with a noble title and the governorship of any lands he should encounter.

Where Did Columbus' Ships, Niña, Pinta and Santa Maria, Land?

On August 3, 1492, Columbus and his crew set sail from Spain in three ships: the Niña , the Pinta and the Santa Maria . On October 12, the ships made landfall—not in the East Indies, as Columbus assumed, but on one of the Bahamian islands, likely San Salvador.

For months, Columbus sailed from island to island in what we now know as the Caribbean, looking for the “pearls, precious stones, gold, silver, spices, and other objects and merchandise whatsoever” that he had promised to his Spanish patrons, but he did not find much. In January 1493, leaving several dozen men behind in a makeshift settlement on Hispaniola (present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic), he left for Spain.

He kept a detailed diary during his first voyage. Christopher Columbus’s journal was written between August 3, 1492, and November 6, 1492 and mentions everything from the wildlife he encountered, like dolphins and birds, to the weather to the moods of his crew. More troublingly, it also recorded his initial impressions of the local people and his argument for why they should be enslaved.

“They… brought us parrots and balls of cotton and spears and many other things, which they exchanged for the glass beads and hawks’ bells," he wrote. "They willingly traded everything they owned… They were well-built, with good bodies and handsome features… They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. They have no iron… They would make fine servants… With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.”

Columbus gifted the journal to Isabella upon his return.

Christopher Columbus's Later Voyages

About six months later, in September 1493, Columbus returned to the Americas. He found the Hispaniola settlement destroyed and left his brothers Bartolomeo and Diego Columbus behind to rebuild, along with part of his ships’ crew and hundreds of enslaved indigenous people.

Then he headed west to continue his mostly fruitless search for gold and other goods. His group now included a large number of indigenous people the Europeans had enslaved. In lieu of the material riches he had promised the Spanish monarchs, he sent some 500 enslaved people to Queen Isabella. The queen was horrified—she believed that any people Columbus “discovered” were Spanish subjects who could not be enslaved—and she promptly and sternly returned the explorer’s gift.

In May 1498, Columbus sailed west across the Atlantic for the third time. He visited Trinidad and the South American mainland before returning to the ill-fated Hispaniola settlement, where the colonists had staged a bloody revolt against the Columbus brothers’ mismanagement and brutality. Conditions were so bad that Spanish authorities had to send a new governor to take over.

Meanwhile, the native Taino population, forced to search for gold and to work on plantations, was decimated (within 60 years after Columbus landed, only a few hundred of what may have been 250,000 Taino were left on their island). Christopher Columbus was arrested and returned to Spain in chains.

In 1502, cleared of the most serious charges but stripped of his noble titles, the aging Columbus persuaded the Spanish crown to pay for one last trip across the Atlantic. This time, Columbus made it all the way to Panama—just miles from the Pacific Ocean—where he had to abandon two of his four ships after damage from storms and hostile natives. Empty-handed, the explorer returned to Spain, where he died in 1506.

Legacy of Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus did not “discover” the Americas, nor was he even the first European to visit the “New World.” (Viking explorer Leif Erikson had sailed to Greenland and Newfoundland in the 11th century.)

However, his journey kicked off centuries of exploration and exploitation on the American continents. The Columbian Exchange transferred people, animals, food and disease across cultures. Old World wheat became an American food staple. African coffee and Asian sugar cane became cash crops for Latin America, while American foods like corn, tomatoes and potatoes were introduced into European diets.

Today, Columbus has a controversial legacy —he is remembered as a daring and path-breaking explorer who transformed the New World, yet his actions also unleashed changes that would eventually devastate the native populations he and his fellow explorers encountered.

Columbus unveils new tourism campaign amidst major urban developments

Columbus is not just expanding; it's looking to explode into national consciousness with a new tourism campaign unveiled Thursday night during the TourismUS annual meeting at the Columbus Museum of Art.

The event, hosted by Experience Columbus in conjunction with U.S. Travel Association’s National Travel and Tourism Week, brought together industry professionals and civic leaders to spotlight Columbus's growing influence in the travel and tourism sector.

Experience Columbus President and CEO Brian Ross announced the new "yes, Columbus" campaign, an initiative that seeks to reshape perceptions and entice visitors with the city's vibrant culture and unexpected attractions.

"This campaign is a declaration that Columbus is ready to emerge from the shadows of other major Midwest cities," Ross said. "It's right for the moment we’re in and for the foreseeable future."

The campaign, Ross and other speakers noted, is a concerted effort to firmly stamp Columbus' name on the map, with the goal of continuing to bolster tourism.

According to the latest data from Longwoods International, Columbus welcomed a staggering 51.2 million visitors in 2023, a record for the city, generating over $8.2 billion in local business revenue.

These visits had a broad impact, supporting approximately 82,568 jobs and generating significant tax revenues that bolster local services and development.

The evening also recognized key contributors to Columbus’s tourism industry. The inaugural Best of US Awards celebrated individuals and organizations that have significantly enriched the city’s hospitality and tourism landscape. Notable recipients included Stonewall Columbus, Inc., The Junto, Historic Trolley District, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, and Joe Kapferer, each praised for their innovative and inclusive efforts.

Ross, along with other city leaders, spoke on future initiatives set to transform Columbus into a more vibrant, attractive destination.

"Let's talk about what's next for Columbus," Ross said during his presentation.

He detailed several urban developments that promise to redefine the cityscape. Among these is the Capital Line, a new two-mile pathway dedicated to bike and pedestrian traffic that will connect key amenities, green spaces, and job centers across downtown Columbus.

Ross also discussed the significant economic and civic benefits expected from several key projects, including the LinkUS transportation initiative, a comprehensive $2 billion expansion of the local airport, and the creation of a new fashion innovation hub.

According to Greg Davies, CEO of Downtown Columbus Inc, as Columbus embarks on these ambitious projects, the city is set to not only enhance its appeal as a tourist destination but also enrich the lives of its residents.

"There's never been a more exciting time to be in Columbus." Davies said.

Columbus among the top 100 cities in the U.S. See where this 'Midwest masterpiece' ranks

"A Midwest masterpiece is climbing."

That's the phrase global consulting group Resonance used to describe Columbus on its list of America's 100 Best Cities .

For 2024, the Buckeye State's capital city ranked 34, beating out other fine Ohio cities like Cleveland and Cincinnati, which ranked 40 and 42, respectively.

What is Resonance and what does it know about cities?

Resonance is a consulting firm specializing in economic and urban development. Every year, it releases a list of America's 100 Best Cities. It uses metrics like TripAdvisor reviews, Facebook check-ins, census data and surveys to rank the U.S.'s cities with over 500,000 people.

Resonance describes Columbus as "an emerging tech mecca with a thriving arts scene" and a "food town."

Ohio State University, the Trolley District, Hiraeth restaurant, The Junto Hotel and the Quarry Trails Metro Park are all listed as jewels in Columbus' crown.

"Urban reuse and development are everywhere, from small bets on branding retail strips like the new Common Thread fashion district to doubling down on fortifying historic places, such as the Trolley District with its craft breweries and restaurants."

What is America's top city?

Coming as a surprise to no one, the number one city in the U.S. according to Resonance is New York City, a position it's held since the annual list was first created.

"In 2024, it is U.S. urban recovery writ large, with a dizzying roster of new shows, hotels and parks—and record real estate prices. But the Big Apple is always worth the price of admission, especially in these glory days," according to Resonance.

But hey, at least we're better than Portland, Maine.

How to Choose the Right Tour Group

Group size, participants’ age range, style of travel and budget are among the factors you should consider when selecting an itinerary.

An illustration shows a stylized globe with buildings ranging from an old church to the Chrysler Building skyscraper. In the center of the globe, tourists in sunglasses and hats and T-shirts roam around the building. One group in particular is enlarged, with the central figure holding up a selfie stick with a cellphone, taking a photo of his group.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

Tour companies that offer multiday trips arrange most everything for you: lodging, sightseeing, food and transportation. But group size, style of travel and budget are among the considerations travelers should assess before picking a tour. Read on for tips.

Big group or small

Start your research by thinking about how many people you want to travel with and what your tolerance is for the social demands dictated by group size.

Smaller groups can move more nimbly and possibly see more. But they can also be more intensely social as you spend a great deal of time with the same people touring and dining.

Larger groups tend to require more time to get around, but they can also offer more social variety — for example, you can change up your lunch partners more easily.

“Large groups offer anonymity, allowing travelers to choose their level of interaction,” said Deborah Miller, a travel adviser and the owner of Edge of Wonder Travels Unlimited in San Francisco. “Conversely, smaller groups foster intimacy among travelers, guides and the destination itself.”

Look for age-appropriate trips

Think about the demographics of your travel party and consider matching that to a tour company.

Operators often segment their trips by age under the assumption that similarly aged people have more in common or prefer the same pace. Road Scholar , for example, caters to an intellectually curious 50-plus crowd.

On the other end of the spectrum, G Adventures offers a category of trips for “18-to-thirtysomethings” and Intrepid Travel has trips for 18-to-35-year-olds.

With their inherent age spans, families can be a tough demographic to fit into larger group departures, which is why companies tend to break up family offerings by age group.

The active tour company Backroads has three age segments for families, including trips for those with children 4 to 19, those with older teens and younger adults into their 20s, and those with children in their 20s and beyond.

“By definition, that creates somewhat of an age segmentation among parents, too,” said Tom Hale, the founder, president and chief executive of Backroads.

Go general or specific

A popular option for first-timers, a general tour will hit the highlights of a destination, like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre in Paris or major sites in Tokyo and Kyoto in Japan.

Beyond the general approach, alternatives abound based on themes, styles of travel or hobbies.

Themed trips include a culinary tour of Sicily , a deep dive into literary England , Europe’s World War II battlefields and how women live in India .

In addition to topics, trips often revolve around the means of travel, such as going by train , on foot or by boat (a category that can be further segmented by size, from a cruise ship to a barge or a kayak ).

Tours can also allow you to pursue an interest like swimming or knitting in a unique destination.

Analyze tour inclusions

Once you determine where and how you want to go, prices will range from budget to luxury.

“For travelers on a budget, large group tours tend to be the best fit because it’s a great way to see major attractions at a lower price point,” said Cheyenne Schriefer, a travel adviser and the owner of All Travel Matters in Golden Valley, N.D.

But not all tours are built the same. To compare them, consider what they include.

For example, G Adventures has a 10-day hiking trip in Switzerland from $1,799 a person and a 10-day hiking trip in Portugal for $4,499. The latter is billed as a luxury trip, so the accommodations are pricier, but it also includes most meals, transfers and activities. The Swiss tour offers more basic lodgings, transfers, optional activities available for a fee, and fewer meals.

“Sometimes fewer inclusions are better than more,” said Pauline Frommer, co-president of Frommer Media, which publishes Frommer’s guidebooks . She pointed out that restaurants that can accommodate busloads probably don’t attract local traffic and that independent sightseeing allows you to “wander through local neighborhoods to get the feel of local life.”

Expertise of the guide or tour leader can also alter the price and the experience. You can expect to pay more for a tour led by a specialist, such as an Egyptologist guiding a group along the Nile.

Gauge your level of independence

Do you prefer to follow a strict schedule that relieves you from having to find, say, a restaurant for dinner? Or do you appreciate some structure — like knowing your hotel reservations are covered — but also want free time to explore independently?

Tour companies run the gamut. Before booking, read the itineraries carefully to find out if the schedule is tight or loose. If that is not clear, call the company to ask.

For truly independent travelers, self-guided tours offered by companies such as Inntravel , Exodus Adventure Travels and Macs Adventure make your ground arrangements and provide an itinerary to follow. Popular in Europe, these itineraries tend to be inn-to-inn walking or cycling trips that include luggage transfers.

“Self-guided travelers are independent but love the support of having a trip arranged for them, and they don’t want to hike with a big backpack anymore,” said Jasper Verlaan, the U.S. sales director for Macs Adventure.

Ask for recommendations

If you’re still unsure about putting down a deposit once you’ve done your research, ask the tour company if you may speak to a past client.

“Ask for references,” said Lynn Cutler, the senior vice president of travel for Smithsonian Enterprises, which runs the tour company Smithsonian Journeys . “We’ll find them a traveler who has done this trip in the past and put them in touch.”
