Overview [ ]

This maneuver was performed by traveling at an extremely high warp factor towards a massive body with a high gravitational attraction, such as a star . After allowing the gravitational pull to accelerate the vessel to even faster speeds, the vessel would then break away from the stellar body, creating a whiplash effect which could transport the vessel through time. Performing this maneuver required extremely precise calculations to be made, such as availability of fuel components, acceleration, and mass of a vessel through a time continuum. ( TOS : " Tomorrow is Yesterday "; Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home ) According to Dr. Agnes Jurati the maneuver requires "an intelligence that can isolate the divergence and micro-shift for any chronitonic radiation " such as a Vulcan like Spock or the Borg Queen . ( PIC : " Penance ")

In 2267 , the starship USS Enterprise accidentally traveled through time to the late 1960s , when an encounter with a previously-uncharted black star required the crew to utilize all warp power in reverse to break away from the star's powerful gravitational attraction, creating a whiplash effect. In order to return to their own time, the crew of the Enterprise recreated the accident, using the gravitational pull of Earth's sun to perform the slingshot. ( TOS : " Tomorrow is Yesterday ")

In 2268 , the Enterprise utilized this method again to travel back in time three hundred years in order to conduct historical research on planet Earth . ( TOS : " Assignment: Earth ")

HMS Bounty slingshot approaching Sol 1

The "HMS Bounty " enters time warp on a slingshot around Sol

In 2286 , Admiral Kirk and his command crew were forced to use the maneuver again, this time in the stolen Klingon Bird-of-Prey HMS Bounty , when an extremely powerful probe threatened to destroy Earth while attempting to contact by then- extinct humpback whales . To appease the probe, Kirk and crew used the slingshot effect to travel back in time to the late 20th century to retrieve two humpback whales . ( Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home )

In 2365 , Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Commander William T. Riker speculated on what phenomenon could have thrown the El-Baz back in time. While Riker knew the shuttlepod didn't have warp drive , he still suggested the theory that it could have somehow accelerated beyond warp 10 . Picard suggested this could have been achieved by a warp-powered slingshot using the gravitational pull of a star. ( TNG : " Time Squared ")

In 2384 , Professor Erin Macdonald 's video on Temporal Mechanics 101 listed a slingshot around the sun as a possible method of time travel for those seeking to do it along with getting on the wrong side of a Q and a wormhole , the latter of which was the best choice. ( PRO : " Temporal Mechanics 101 ")

In 2401 , Picard and his friends, displaced into an alternate timeline , planned to use the slingshot effect to travel back in time with the help of the Borg Queen in order to correct the timeline. ( PIC : " Penance ") During an attack on the CSS La Sirena , the Borg Queen took control of the ship and successfully used the slingshot effect to send them back to 2024 . ( PIC : " Assimilation ")

Background information [ ]

Based on Star Trek IV The Voyage Home and "Tomorrow is Yesterday", going beyond warp 10 and creating a time warp are two stages in the slingshot effect. In Star Trek IV the time warp was generated after the ship had passed warp 9.8. While in "Tomorrow is Yesterday" going reverse through time already begins when the ship is approaching the stellar body at over the speed of warp 8. In the episode it is stated by Sulu, that the speed of the Enterprise goes "off the dial" for a moment after the ship has broken away from the star and reverses its direction in time to travel forward again, suggesting the ship does go "beyond infinite" at that point.

Ronald D. Moore commented: " I would assume that the precise calculations involved in using the slingshot method are something of a closely-guarded secret. " ( AOL chat , 1997 )

According to Star Trek Maps (p. 6), the speed increase that dislodges the ship from the space-time continuum in a slingshot effect is caused by a mathematical factor called the Cochrane's factor. It is added as a multiplier to the basic warp formula based on the amount of curvature of space the ship is traveling through. While the factor within the normal interstellar medium of Federation space is an average of 1292.7238 and in the intergalactic void only 1, in the close proximity of stars and other massive objects it is so high that these disproportionately high speeds are created.

Apocrypha [ ]

In the novel The Ashes of Eden , renegade admiral Andovar Drake attempts to use the slingshot effect to go back in time to ambush Kirk the day he arrived in the Chal system after the Enterprise -A and the Excelsior destroy Drake's supporting ships, requiring Sulu to beam over to the Enterprise to take the ship after Drake's bird-of-prey as an Excelsior -class ship hasn't attempted such a maneuver before. Although the Enterprise is able to damage Drake's engines before he can complete the slingshot, both ships are destroyed when they remain in the star's corona for too long, although Kirk's crew are beamed to safety by the Excelsior and Drake dies only because he refuses to accept his loss.

In the novel Engines of Destiny , Montgomery Scott acquires another Bird-of-Prey and attempts to use the slingshot effect to travel back in time and prevent Kirk's death on the USS Enterprise -B , believing that he can travel back to the day of Kirk's death and beam Kirk to safety just before the ship is struck by the energy ribbon, thereby not actually changing history as Kirk would still vanish and be presumed dead. The maneuver itself is successful, but as a result, a timeline is created where Kirk never enters the Nexus , Jean-Luc Picard never returns from it, and the Borg have assimilated Earth without Picard to stop them in Star Trek: First Contact . It requires the intervention of the USS Enterprise -D , which fortunately followed Scott's ship closely enough to avoid being caught up in the changes to history, to undo Scott's mistake and return Kirk to the Nexus.

In the tenth anniversary special trilogy Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Millennium , the USS Defiant accidentally slingshots around the Bajoran wormhole after a second wormhole opens within Deep Space 9 itself, and is sent twenty-five years into the future. Although unable to return by repeating the procedure – something that is apparently vital due to the time-travelers being "out of sync" with the rest of the universe and therefore unable to use other time-travel methods to return home – before the Bajoran wormhole is merged with a red wormhole that was created as they departed, by entering a realm of non-linear time inside the merged wormholes, the crew are able to avert the creation of the red wormhole and erase the future they witnessed while returning to their time just before the destruction of Deep Space 9 in the past.

In the novel The Rings of Time , it is all but explicitly stated that the slingshot maneuver is used when the Enterprise has to travel back to Saturn in 2020 when Kirk's mind is swapped with Colonel Shaun Geoffrey Christopher after an encounter with an alien probe in 2270.

In the novel Forgotten History , it is revealed that, initially, the Enterprise was the only ship capable of performing a slingshot maneuver, due to its engines being exposed to a unique set of conditions during their jump back in time after a cold start in " The Naked Time ", resulting in the newly-formed Department of Temporal Investigations claiming the engines during the ship's refit to create a timeship of their own. However, the knowledge of how to make any ship capable of performing a slingshot maneuver was revealed to Kirk by Agent Lucsly of the DTI when he was forced to work with Kirk during a malfunction of Timeship Two , when an attempt to blend the slingshot effect and dimension-shifting technology to let the ship travel into the future of alternate universes trapped the ship between 2273 and 2383 and risked altering the future.

In the novel Elusive Salvation , the Enterprise is able to send a small probe back to 1971 via the slingshot effect, the probe containing a recorded message to Kirk's 20th century contact Roberta Lincoln asking for her help in finding out anything about an alien ship that crash-landed on Earth in 1845, the recording also noting that the probe is programmed to destroy itself in Earth's sun after delivering the message to limit potential temporal contamination.

In the Star Trek Online mission "Night of the Comet", players are tasked with traveling back to the past to destroy a comet that is allowing the Devidians to haunt Drozana Station. They are sent to the Bepi 113 system where a graviton slingshot system is set up by Section 31 that allows them to perform the stunt without the need for specialized calculations.

Star Trek Features Some Brilliant References To Frank Herbert's Dune

F rank Herbert's "Dune" has a longer timeline than one might expect. The first book takes place in the year 10,191 A.G., referring to a time after the inception of the Spacing Guild, the organization devoted to faster-than-light travel. Later sequels refer to the year 11,200 B.G. as the year humans first developed space travel, lining it up with A.D. 1960. "Dune," then, takes place about 20,000 years in the future.

"Star Trek," in contrast, takes place in the relatively near future. The original series takes place in the 23rd century, and "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- and its immediate spinoffs "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," "Star Trek" Voyager," and "Star Trek: Lower Decks" -- all take place in the 24th century. Extending the timeline, "Picard" takes place in the early 25th century, and the bulk of "Discovery" takes place in 32nd century, thanks to a time warp. Comparatively, those are small temporal potatoes when compared to "Dune."

Sadly, the lore of "Dune" is so involved and unique, one cannot squint their eyes and pretend that the two franchises take place in the same universe. Their respective histories are simply too different.

But that hasn't stopped the makers of "Star Trek" from dropping in a few "Dune" references from time to time. The writers of "Voyager" are, as one might expect, science-fiction nerds, and would, in tiny ways, drop in references to other sci-fi stories. Trekkies will be able to tell you about a planetary manifest on the U.S.S. Enterprise that, when examined closely, list the planet of Alderaan, the planet the Galactic Empire blows up in "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope."

On "Star Trek: Voyager," there have been passing references to planets within the "Dune" universe as well, particularly Arrakis (a.k.a. Dune) and Geidi Prime, the home planet of House Harkonnen.

Arrakis Prime

In the "Voyager" episode "One Small Step" (November 17, 1999), the U.S.S. Voyager finds a mysterious subspace ellipse that may contain a 300-year-old Mars vessel inside. Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) assigns Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) to go inside with Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) and Chakotay (Robert Beltran) to investigate, leaving the rest of the crew envious at their opportunity. The Doctor (Robert Picardo) asked that Seven bring along a camera and to take some pictures inside the ellipse, knowing it would provide uniquely beautiful images. Seven seems unimpressed, but the Doctor explains how awesome it is to be standing among remote spatial phenomenon. "I can only tell you how I felt that morning I materialized on Arrakis Prime," the Doctor says. "I left my footprints in the magnesite dust and thought, 'One small step for a hologram, one giant leap for mankind.'"

Whether or not the Doctor visited the same Arrakis from "Dune" will have to remain the subject of nerdy fan speculation.

In the "Voyager" episode "Drive" (October 18, 2000), B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson) plans on taking her husband Tom on a romantic getaway on the Voyager's holodeck. She plans on taking him to Gedi Prime, described as so beautiful, it makes the famed resort world Risa look like a tourist trap. It's also said to have excellent golf courses. Sadly, their vacation is delayed when Tom gets involved in a high-speed starship race.

Geidi Prime, as mentioned, is the homeworld of the evil House Harkonnen in "Dune," only it's decidedly not beautiful. It's mechanical, dark, oily, and gross. Repurposing Geidi Prime as one of the most beautiful of all planets is likely a cute joke on the part of the "Voyager" writers.

Gedi Prime, Geidi Prime

As "Voyager" progressed, the ship was eventually able to start communicating with the Alpha Quadrant, still many, many years away at maximum warp. Indeed, information could be shunted back and forth from the Voyager's holodeck and the holodeck belonging to Reginald Barclay (Dwight Schultz) back home. This allowed face-to-face interaction between the remote locations, and a few amusing conversations held by Barclay and the Doctor. The two liked being in each other's company, and the Doctor even suggested that the pair visit the Gedi Prime golf course. It's not exactly the same as Geidi Prime (the subtitles on the "Voyager" DVDs do indeed say "Gedi" and not "Geidi"), but it's close enough to be considered a definite reference.

One can also point out that Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Picard on "Star Trek: the Next Generation," also appeared as Gurney Halleck in David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation of "Dune." Also that Brad Dourif, who played Piter De Vries in "Dune," also appeared in three episodes of "Voyager" as a Betazoid. In Denis Villeneuve's 2021 film version of "Dune," actor Babs Olusanmokun played a Fremen warrior named Jamis, and he also plays Dr. M'Benga in the modern "Star Trek" show "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."

As mentioned, the histories of "Star Trek" and "Dune" are too different for the two franchises to intersect in any kind of meaningful way, so there shan't be any crossovers in the near future. "Star Trek" employs warp engines to zip around the universe, while "Dune" uses a psychedelic spice. Also, "Dune" takes place in a deeply religious, markedly mystical universe, whereas "Star Trek" takes place in a post-religious, deeply humanist universe. But one can be sure that fans of one are most assuredly fans of the other.

Star Trek Introduces Its Own Version Of Loki's Miss Minutes

Kirk calls doctor mccoy “bones” in star trek - but why, star trek's new warp drive breaks the prime directive in a way no-one expected.

  • Spock is the Anchor Being of the Star Trek universe, connecting various timelines and embodying the franchise's core values.
  • Spock's presence throughout different Star Trek series helps maintain interest and continuity within the multiverse.
  • Star Trek spinoffs like Discovery and Strange New Worlds keep Spock's legacy alive through new iterations of the iconic character.

If there's an Anchor Being for the Star Trek universe, it's got to be Spock (Leonard Nimoy, Zachary Quinto, Ethan Peck). Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine introduced the concept of Anchor Beings to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These are people whose importance to a given timeline in the multiverse is so strong that Anchor Beings actually keep their branch of the multiverse alive . In Deadpool & Wolverine , the Anchor Being of Earth-10005 (also known as Fox's X-Men universe) is Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, who essentially carried the cinematic X-Men franchise from X-Men (2000) until Wolverine's death in 2017's Logan, which signaled the beginning of the end for that universe.

After seeing Deadpool & Wolverine , I wondered if there might be an Anchor Being for the Star Trek universe. Like Wolverine for the cinematic X-Men, this would have to be someone who's been part of Star Trek since the beginning, and whose return revives interest when the franchise seems to be at a low point. Star Trek 's Anchor Being needs to influence every part of the franchise, either appearing in it directly or being one step removed from at least one character in every Star Trek show . The Anchor Being should be fairly regarded as beloved, and embody Star Trek 's core values. Who else could this be but Spock?

With its complicated time travel plot, Star Trek: Prodigy has some similarities to Marvel's Loki, including a character resembling Miss Minutes.

10 Spock Was In Both Pilot Episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series

Leonard nimoy is the only cast member playing the same character in both pilots.

The original pilot for Star Trek: The Original Series , "The Cage", was rejected by NBC, but Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was given a second chance. For the second attempt at a pilot for Star Trek: The Original Series, "Where No Man Has Gone Before", most of the cast was replaced with new actors playing new characters. The only character to make the jump from Star Trek 's first to its second pilot episode was Leonard Nimoy's Spock, so we're already off to a great start. (Majel Barrett-Roddenberry also made the cut, but went from playing Number One to playing Nurse Christine Chapel.)

9 The Spock-Centric "Yesteryear" Anchors Star Trek: The Animated Series In Trek Canon

Spock has to save his younger self to fix the timeline.

Star Trek: The Animated Series season 1, episode 2, "Yesteryear", foregoes the regular goofy fare of the TOS sequel with a poignant episode that proves Star Trek needs Spock. In "Yesteryear", written by D.C. Fontana, Spock goes back in time to prevent his own death as a child. Spock's memories of a distant relative, Selek, turn out to be Spock himself, as Spock closes a time loop to maintain his own existence . In doing so, Star Trek: The Animated Series creates a wealth of information about Vulcan culture in Star Trek , like Spock's pet sehlat, I-Chaya, and the Vulcan kahs-wan coming-of-age ceremony.

8 Spock's Star Trek II Death Is Quickly Reversed

The genesis device brings spock back to life.

Spock's noble act of self-sacrifice in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan remains an important cultural touchstone. (Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool even gives Spock's death a direct shout-out in Deadpool & Wolverine.) Instead of letting Spock stay dead, however, the Vulcan's body lands among the growing life on the Genesis Planet, and Spock is resurrected by the detonated Genesis Device's life-giving energy. It's a great workaround to maintain the integrity of Spock's choice to honor the "needs of the many" in Star Trek II and also keep Spock around so that the timeline can function.

7 Star Trek: The Next Generation Couldn't Resist Spock

Both sarek and spock appear in tng episodes.

After DeForest Kelley's cameo as Dr. Leonard McCoy in Star Trek: The Next Generation 's premiere, "Encounter at Farpoint", Star Trek: The Next Generation tried to maintain distance from Star Trek: The Original Series, and carve out its own identity. TNG does a great job standing on its own merits, but Spock ultimately weaves his way into the series to connect Star Trek: The Next Generation to Star Trek: The Original Series .

This first happens in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3, episode 23, "Sarek", when the USS Enterprise-D escorts Spock's father, Ambassador Sarek (Mark Lenard) to a diplomatic mission. Later, Spock makes his own appearance in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episodes 7 & 8, "Unification" , when Ambassador Spock's efforts to unite the Vulcans and Romulans after centuries of division and discord between these related species come to a head.

6 Just When You Think Star Trek Spinoffs Are Spock-Free, There's Time Travel

Star trek: deep space nine and star trek: voyager have their spock moments too.

If Spock is Star Trek 's Anchor Being, then Spock's presence in Star Trek: The Next Generation effectively pins the TNG spinoffs, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, to canon , too. Just like TNG started with a McCoy cameo, Deep Space Nine starts with the station being visted by the USS Enterprise, and Star Trek: Voyager starts with the USS Voyager docked at DS9.

These ties are tenuous at best, but they can be strengthened with Star Trek time travel episodes . Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 5, episode 6, "Trials & Tribble-ations" sees Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) and other DS9 crew members go back in time to the events of Star Trek: The Original Series "The Trouble With Tribbles", and of course, Spock is present . Star Trek: Voyager season 3, episode 2, "Flashback" reveals Lt. Commander Tuvok's (Tim Russ) history serving with Captain Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) -- who's just one step removed from Spock.

Both "Trials & Tribble-ations" and "Flashback" were part of Star Trek 's 30th anniversary celebration, as DS9 and Voyager honored Star Trek: The Original Series with stories referencing TOS characters.

5 What About The Spock-Less Star Trek: Enterprise?

Interest in a franchise fades without its anchor being.

One test of whether a character is a series' Anchor Being is what happens to their franchise after they're no longer part of it. Ties to Spock were tenuous at best in the trio of TNG-era Star Trek shows, but not nonexistent. Star Trek: Enterprise took place a hundred years before Star Trek: The Original Series , and thus had no Spock to speak of. Enterprise is solid Star Trek , but Star Trek: Enterprise coincided with waning interest in Star Trek in general . Public interest in the X-Men movies fizzled out with the Logan-less Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants — which also ditched the X-Men title, the same way Star Trek: Enterprise premiered simply as Enterprise .

Realistically speaking, the absences of Spock and Logan are coincidences, and the lack of public interest in both cases is more likely attributed to franchise fatigue. Star Trek had been on TV in some form for 35 years when Star Trek: Enterprise premiered. Dark Phoenix hit theaters in 2019, after nearly 20 years of X-Men movies and Disney's purchase of Fox.

4 The Kelvin Timeline's Spockfest Resurrected Star Trek

J.j. abrams' star trek has new spock and old spock.

The Kelvin Timeline trilogy reignited interest in Star Trek with J.J. Abrams' fresh take on characters from Star Trek: The Original Series . Not only was there a new Spock (Zachary Quinto) for this new Star Trek , but the link between the old and new versions of the USS Enterprise crew was Leonard Nimoy's time-displaced Ambassador Spock . Going by the Anchor Being theory, Ambassador Spock becomes part of this branched timeline and "anchors" the Kelvin Timeline as a Star Trek timeline that can't be erased .

Before his death, Nimoy's Spock theoretically hands off anchor duty to Quinto's Spock, but the box office numbers for Star Trek Beyond and the fact that Star Trek 4 has never gotten off the ground suggest otherwise. (It's a shame, too, because Beyond promised some great things for this version of Star Trek. )

3 Ethan Peck's Spock Anchors New Star Trek Series

Discovery, strange new worlds, and lower decks all involve spock.

Star Trek: Discovery ties back to Spock right off the bat, since Discovery 's lead, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), is Spock's adopted sister. In Star Trek: Discovery season 2, Ethan Peck's Spock actually makes his on-screen debut, and Star Trek: Discovery starts to feel a little more optimistic. Discovery season 2 spins off into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which features Spock along with Discovery 's Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) among Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' main characters .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 7 , "Those Old Scientists", crosses over with Star Trek: Lower Decks, establishing a direct tie between Ensigns Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid). Star Trek: Lower Decks is itself a love letter to all Star Trek that came before, with direct references to Spock as a famous public figure in-universe.

2 Holographic Spock Inspires Star Trek: Prodigy's Dal R'El

Dal beats the kobayashi maru (sort of).

Through archival audio from Star Trek: The Original Series , Leonard Nimoy's Spock inspires Star Trek: Prodigy 's Dal R'El (Brett Gray) about what it means to be a captain. Star Trek: Prodigy season 1, episode 6, "Kobayashi" sees Dal determined to solve the unsolvable Kobayashi Maru, not knowing it's meant to be unbeatable. Dal can pick his crew from Star Trek greats and chooses a holographic Mr. Spock as an advisor. Spock's advice, which was originally given to Kirk, inspires an early turning point in Dal's character arc from arrogance to humility. That's one way to keep Nimoy's Spock in Star Trek .

1 Leonard Nimoy's Spock Represents Star Trek: The Original Series In Marketing Images

Paramount+ chose spock to be the face of tos.

To really get an idea of how important Spock is to the Star Trek franchise, one only needs to look at Paramount's marketing images for Star Trek . Advertising banners and posters where each Star Trek show is represented by a different character show that Leonard Nimoy's Spock is the face of Star Trek: The Original Series . This serves as a way to honor Nimoy's legacy in the real world as well as the impact that Spock has on Star Trek. Spock is so integral to the Star Trek format that most series have their own version of a Spock-like character to comment on humanity from an outsider's perspective, and those that didn't start with one wind up bringing one in.

Of course, the Star Trek multiverse doesn't operate on the same rules as the multiverse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it is interesting to note how Star Trek series that don't have at least one Spock appearance fare , and compare them with installments of X-Men that are Wolverine-agnostic. With 3 different actors playing Spock over 6 decades, Spock as a character has transcended Nimoy's original performance. More importantly, Spock represents an essential part of the Star Trek mythos, as an embodiment of diversity, curiosity, and cooperation — with others and within ourselves.

Rack and fender mounts help to keep things dry and expand the load-carrying capacity for longer bikepacking adventures, while clearance for 700c x 48mm or 650b x 2.0in tires opens up a whole new world of possibilities. The frame accepts flat-mount disc calipers, and the new all-carbon fiber Ritchey Adventure Fork with multi-purpose mounts on the legs gives you more places to stow the supplies you gather at the last café – wherever that may be.

Short breaks

Herd of zebras running in Africa

Whether it's the ultimate holiday add-on or a mini adventure you seek, Intrepid's Short Break Adventures are sure to tick all the boxes. They're loaded with value, take the hassle out of planning and help you squeeze every last drop out of your next trip away.

Short Breaks are the ideal add-on to a longer holiday – or a mini adventure of their own. With a duration of 2-8 days, they range from beach breaks to guided excursions, or are centered around an experience like hiking or cooking. Departures are frequent and usually guaranteed.

Short Breaks are slightly different to our group tours, with the idea being that you maintain a level of independence during down time e.g. at night. You'll most likely travel on a join-in basis, which means you may or may not be joined by others for activities and transportation, depending on demand. However, we do offer some independent options where you'll travel on your own or with your own party.

Remember that dream? The one that began on a pearly white beach fringed by waters of sapphire blue. Where waves of incense flooded tiny laneways, and in a small village, a rooster crowed until the rice fields were bathed in warm sunlight. But this is no dream. This is Asia - and it will take your breath away.

From the stampeding wildebeest of the Serengeti to the forces of nature at Zimbabwe’s Vic Falls, Africa is where Mother Nature parades her finest wares at every opportunity. Trek through rainforests and steamy jungles, meet majestic Maasai warriors and trace the inscriptions of ancient civilizations - the impressiveness of this continent simply knows no bounds!

Bite-size, hearty and packed with flavor and while that may sound like a taco - it’s actually a Central American Short Break. With a quick few days to spare, jump into a jam-packed itinerary featuring the oldest ruins, freshest foods and biggest monuments. Along the way you’ll have full insider know-how from a local guide so you can get the most of your time in Central America.

With a few spare days, venture to the world’s most remote destinations or its busiest cities. From glacier hunting at Patagonia’s Torres del Paine National Park or animal spotting in the Amazon Jungle to marveling before Iguazu Falls or debating the wonders of Easter Island – find a way to spend a couple of extra days in the ever-enchanting South America.

Travel a road that links antiquity with modernity, hear the melodic call to prayer drift over the hum of modern traffic, and marvel at 5000-year-old pyramids reflected in shining high-rise buildings only a decade old. Step into the exotic Middle East.

Preview & How to Watch Jersey Contenders Startlist Watch Parties

The 2024 Tour de France Femmes kicks off on Monday, August 12, and promises to be a spectacular, dramatic week of racing. With Stages 2 and 3 both taking place on Tuesday, plus many of the riders going straight from the Olympic Village to Rotterdam, Monday’s 123-kilometer flat and fast stage is going to be tactically fascinating .

Will riders who underperform at the Olympics want to start the race with some hard attacks and breakaway attempts, or will this be a day for the sprinters—including this year’s Olympic silver medalist Marianne Vos? Will Lotte Kopecky’s absence from the race leave a gap that a racer outside of the SD Worx-Protime team can fill? Will Demi Vollering try to get the Yellow Jersey from Day 1, or is she going to play the long game? Stage 1 is going to be incredibly telling.

Stage 1: Rotterdam > La Haye, 123 km

122.7 km (76.27 mi) — 284 m (931 ft) of elevation, how hard is stage 1 of the tour de france femmes.

Flat stages are interesting because the answer to ‘how hard’ the stage is will always be ‘it depends.’ Unlike mountain stages, which are punishing no matter where you sit in the pack, flat stages can be tame, especially if the peloton is not overly worried about a breakaway getting up the road. Often, these stages have breakaways that last for a solid chunk of the race, only to be swallowed up in the final kilometers of racing. (See: Stage 2 of this year’s Giro d’Italia Women . Ouch.)

The nearly pancake-flat course is broken up by one small hill mid-race and has one sprint segment at 85 kilometers with points toward the Green Jersey competition . It does have plenty of challenging twists and tight turns, including a sharp U-turn that could catch some riders out or wreak havoc on the peloton if it’s at all wet.

In the end, with the number of turns the course has and how narrow roads in the Netherlands can be, the difficulty lies in riders keeping calm, especially if they experience mechanicals, and trusting their skills in the technical sections.

What Will the Weather Be Like?

There is a high of 90°F and a low of 68°F, with a 1-percent chance of precipitation and winds coming from the Southeast at 10 mph. The day will be hot, with plenty of sun, but teams should be ready for this. However, there is a possible danger of dehydration and heatstroke if riders don’t stay on top of their hydration.

Who Can Win the Stage?

A flat course for Stage 1 is particularly fun because it gives riders outside of the usual GC favorites a chance to wear the Yellow Jersey on the next day, even if they don’t get to keep it. Expect this stage to end in a sprint—there are too many good sprinters on the start line to let a breakaway go on Stage 1 when there’s the chance to wear the Yellow Jersey on the line—even if just for a day.

The top sprint contenders we’re watching include Visma-Lease a Bike’s Marianne Vos (the GOAT), SD Worx-Protime’s Lorena Wiebes , and Lidl-Trek’s Elisa Balsamo.

However, there is always room for a rider who is not contending the GC and who may want to make a serious statement to go on the attack and take the surprise win. After watching EF-Oatly-Cannondale’s Kristen Faulkner do just that at the Olympics, we’re guessing the top teams will be watching for a move like it and will be ready to counter it. Still, Faulkner could be a contender, flying high from her two (!) gold medals in the last week. US American Chloé Dygert (Canyon//SRAM) could also be another wildcard after crashing out at the Games—she could be looking for a bit of a revenge Tour, and a stage win would be high on her bucket list.

How Can Stage 1 Affect the General Classification?

This will depend on how the race shakes out, but generally speaking, the main way this stage will affect the GC is if one of the favorites has a mishap or mechanical during the race and falls behind in the standings. This is why team leaders must strike a balance between staying toward the front of the race and staying safe from incidents.

Usually, sprint stages end with the GC leaders coming in together just a few seconds behind the sprinters. With the 3-kilometer rule in effect, as long as no one crashes before the last 3 km and loses time, they will be given the same finishing time as the winners.

While the eventual GC winner may not be in yellow on Day 1, they’ll likely only be down by a few seconds at most. So it’s less about looking for who will win, and instead, looking at the results to see who’s going to have a much harder time clawing their way back up in the rankings.
