Ashton Gate: Bristol City

bristol city stadium tours

Bristol City have called Ashton Gate home since 1904, exactly 110 years before Bristol Rugby joined them at the historic old stadium. When it was opened in 1887 it was actually home to a club called Bedminster FC, but when they joined forces with Bristol South End to form Bristol City in 1900 the new club actually played its games at South End’s old ground, St. John’s Lane.

As is the case with Bristol as a city, football has not had it all its own way at Ashton Gate. In fact, the rugby played at the stadium has arguably been of more importance over the years, with the stadium setting an all-time Premiership record attendance outside of Twickenham when Bristol played Bath in 2006. The ground has also been used for England internationals, with a match against Wales recorded as early as 1899.

Ashton Gate Seating Plan and Where to Sit

bristol city stadium tours

Ashton Gate has four stands in a typically ‘English Style’, though The Williams Stand was demolished in 2015 as the club prepared to begin renovations on it. It re-opened ahead of the 2016-2017 season and was re-named as the Lansdown Stand. The Dolman Stand is the largest section of the ground and sits opposite where The Williams Stand used to be, currently sponsored by ETM Recycling, whilst The Atyeo Stand which is sponsored by Bateman Skips was built in 1994 and contains the club’s dressing rooms. The South Stand was opened in 2015 and is the only one of the currently opened stands not named after a person, although it does have a sponsor by the name of Xledger.

Bristol City Ticket Prices

Ticket prices for Bristol City matches are rather less convoluted than others, but there are different prices for members and non-members. Different areas of the ground also cost different amounts, with your age playing a further part in how much you’ll be charged.

Here are the cheapest and most expensive ticket options in each category for adults and concessions, presuming that you don’t hold a membership card:

  • Gold – Adults: £25 – £45 / Concessions: £22 – £40
  • Silver – Adults: £25 – £34 / Concessions: £22 – £35

How To Get Bristol City Tickets

If you’d like to see Bristol City play then your best bet for tickets is the club’s official website. If you’d prefer then you can also buy tickets over the phone by calling the club’s ticket office. In the case of some matches you might be able to buy tickets by visiting the ticket office, though this isn’t always the case.

Getting To Ashton Gate

Bristol is pretty close to South Wales, so depending on where you’re coming from it’s easy enough to get to. Here are some of the more conventional routes you might wish to look at:

Train – Bristol itself has two main train stations in Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway, though Ashton Gate is closest to Parson Street Station. You can get there on a direct line from either of the main stations as well as from Weston-Super-Mare and Taunton. It’s then an 18 minute walk to the ground.

Bus – There are two match day services that you’ll want to look out for; The BC1 drops off just by the ground and Abus run another service from Brislington Eagle Road that runs through the centre.

Car – If you’re on the M4 leave it at Junction 19 onto the M32 then get on the A4032. Go onto the A4044 then the A4 then the A370 before following signs for the ground. From the M5 leave at Junction 18 and get onto the A4 then the A38 before following signs.

By Air – Bristol has its own airport that serves plenty of Europe’s main cities and offers a bus service to Bristol Parkway for your connections.

Taxi – A taxi from Bristol Temple Meads Railway Station to Ashton Gate will take about ten minutes and cost £8.

Parking Near Ashton Gate

There is limited parking near to Ashton Gate, with on-street parking restrictions in place. You might be able to find a couple of private car parks, of course, and there will be public ones in Bristol city centre. Ashton Event Parking is nearby so a good option to try first.

Right on the border of Somerset and Gloucestershire, you can be sure to get a decent pint of cider in Bristol. Here are some of our favourite pubs for cider-lovers and non-cider-lovers alike:

The knights templar, the cottage inn.

Some of the areas of Ashton Gate are newer than others, but the quality of the facilities are pretty excellent everywhere in the ground. You’ll find many kiosks and stalls offering food, drinks and programmes in wide, clean concourses.

  • Programme: £3.5
  • Cup of tea: £2.2

Hospitality

bristol city stadium tours

Ashton Gate has a number of excellent hospitality lounges, so you’re bound to find something that tickles your fancy if you want to watch Bristol City play in style. You can opt for a matchday package in The Heineken Lounge, for example, that would see you receive a three-course meal before the game, a cheese and biscuit selection afterwards, seating on a terrace outside of the lounge for the match itself, half-time refreshments, and more. Not to mention guest speakers and player appearances to make the day memorable.

The Lansdowne Suite is the slightly more up market choice, with a sliding scale of increasingly VIP packages. Three course meal, half time mini pies, champagne receptions and welcome hosts, padded seating in the Lansdowne Stand, plus Q and As etc. to boot.

Private Hire

Ashton Gate Stadium has its own website outside of the football club, so it’s fair to say that they offer some of the best private hire options in Bristol. You can use some of the numerous lounges for business conferences, perhaps, or host a dinner dance at the home of Bristol City. Maybe you’d like to get married at Ashton Gate? Well they’ve got that covered, with Asian Weddings a speciality too.

Stadium Tours & Museum

At the time of writing, there are no tours of Ashton Gate available. For the moment your only choice for seeing around the venue is by taking an online virtual reality tour, although to be fair it is pretty impressive if you are interested. If anything changes in the future then we’ll update this section of the site.

About Bristol City

bristol city stadium tours

Bristol City have had some ups and downs since they were formed properly in 1897. For starters, The Robins actually reformed as Bristol City FC (1982) Limited in, you guessed it, 1982 after the club endured financial ruin at the start of that decade. In fact it coincided with them setting a somewhat unwanted record – they remain one of only 3 clubs to suffer three consecutive relegations in the Football League, the others are Luton Town and Wolves.

They have endured some success over the years, too. In 1907 they finished as runners-up in the country’s top-tier, that coming immediately on the back of their promotion from the Second Division after they won it in 1906. They won the Third Division in 2015 and have been League Cup semi-finalists twice; once in 1971 and once in 1989.

Ashton Gate History

bristol city stadium tours

There is, in essence, a before and after with Ashton Gate Stadium. Of course there have been numerous developments of the ground since it was built in 1897, though none of them were as comprehensive as the one that has been going on since the start of 2015. The old East End Stand, for example, was the location for the home supporters until it was demolished in 2014 in order to be rebuilt to more modern standards. The Williams Stand, too, was a fixture at the ground until it was destroyed in 2015 and re-opened as the Lansdown Stand.

As well as being the home of Bristol City and Bristol Rugby, the ground has been used to host England Under-21 internationals, such as the one against Uzbekistan that took place in 2010. It has also been used as the location for a number of music concerts from artists like The Who, The Rolling Stone, Brian Adams, Bon Jovi and Elton John.

Future Developments

bristol city stadium tours

Owing to the fact that the club demolished and re-built several sections of the stadium between 2015 and 2017, it’s fair to assume that future developments will now be limited for the foreseeable future. Ashton Gate is going to be part of a bigger sports village with a 4,000 seat basketball stadium having been given the green light, but there are no plans for the football ground.

Ashton Gate Stadium

Ashton Gate Stadium

Club: Bristol City FC | Opening: 1890s (est.) | Capacity: 27,000 seats

History and description

Ashton Gate Stadium was the home of Bedminster FC until they in 1900 merged with Bristol City. The merged club first moved to Bristol City’s ground at St John’s Lane, but in 1904 back to Ashton Gate.

The ground was gradually developed in the following years and in 1913 hosted an international between England and Wales. Ashton Gate set its record attendance in 1935 when 43,335 people attended an FA Cup tie versus Preston North End.

In 1958, a new main stand, the Williams Stand, opened. Twelve years later, in 1970, the new Dolman Stand was built on the opposite side.

The ground remained largely unchanged until the 1990s when it got converted into an all-seater. At the same time (in 1994), the new Atyeo Stand was built behind one of the goals. One year later, a new lower tier got added to the Dolman Stand.

In the 2000s, Bristol City started exploring the possibilities of building a new modern stadium. Plans were made for a 30,000-seater just south of Ashton Gate in the Ashton Vale area, dubbed Ashton Vale Stadium , but heavy resistance of local residents and environmental groups first delayed and ultimately cancelled the plans.

In late 2013, Bristol City instead presented plans for the redevelopment of Ashton Gate, first as a back-up for the Ashton Vale plans, but since April 2014 as their principal plans.

Over a period of two years starting in the summer of 2014, both the Williams and Wedlock Stand got rebuilt, while the other two stands got refurbished. The works were completed in 2016 and raised capacity from 21,000 to 27,000 seats.

On matchdays a special shuttle bus service runs from Temple Gate near Temple Meads station to the stadium. It runs one hour before kick-off and buses return after the match has finished.

From the city centre you can furthermore catch city bus 24 (from The Haymarket) or regional buses X1, X3, X4, X6, X8, and X9 (from Bristol Bus Station).

Tickets for Silver matches, the cheapest, cost between £23.00 for a seat behind the goal and £31.00 for a central seat at the main stand. Tickets for the more expensive Gold matches cost between £28.00 and £36.00. Tickets are £5.00 more expensive if bought on the day.

Ashton Gate Stadium referred by fans as “ The Gate “, is a multi-functional football stadium located in the Ashton Gate suburb of Bristol, south-west England.

Home to Bristol City F.C, and recently Bristol Rugby club, the 21,497 capacity ground dates back to the start of the 20th century.

Bristol City Stadium Guide

Ashton gate history.

Ashton Gate has been the home of Bristol City since 1904, with the club having previously played at St John’s Lane since 1897. The Gate first opened in 1887 and was originally home to Bedminster FC, however the club ceased to exist after merging with Bristol South End.

The newly formed entity was later absorbed by Bristol City’s and is regarded as a spiritual predecessor.

Located on the southern bank of the picturesque River Avon, Ashton Gate has historically been a rather modest stadium, with the current capacity sitting at 21,497.

Although it has yet to be used for International class football, it has hosted two Rugby matches including an encounter between New Zealand and Tonga on 3rd Octobr 1999 for the Rugby World Cup.

Currently consisting of four disparate stands, the story of Ashton Gate Stadium in recent times has been one of ambitious plans but very little action. After The Robins gained promotion to the Championship in 2006/2007 the club receive planning permission to rebuild the Wedlock Stand, but like the previous plan to redevelop the Williams Stand in 1998, nothing came of it.

One of the main reasons for Bristol City’s hesitancy in redeveloping facilities was that The Robins harboured ambitions of building a brand new stadium.

The club wanted to take a long term approach to modernising their stadium, and in 2009 publicly announced plans to build a 30,000 capacity stadium which could theoretically be expanded to 42,000 for the 2018 World Cup.

After England lost the bid, and the project was fraught with difficulties, Bristol essentially went full-circle and reviewed their former plans for each section of the stadium. The vision is now to develop Ashton Gate into a state-of-the-art 29,000 capacity ground by the end of the 2017 season.

Stand Photos

Please be advised, the pictures below are now out of date, three sides of the ground have now been refurbished.

Ashton Gate stadium is made up of the following parts:  Dolman Stand (North), Wedlock Stand (East), Williams Stand (South) and Atyeo Stand (West).

Matchday Experience

Ashton gate away end.

Away fans are housed in the sleek looking Atyeo Stand which first opened in 1994 to replace the aging terrace after the publication of the Taylor report.

The single tiered construction offers unrestricted views regardless of where you are sat, and has decent levels of leg room and comfort as one would expect from a stand less than 25 years old.

Named after the ex-England international club legend John Atyeo who scored 351 goals in 645 appearances for City between 1951-1966, the northern stand is capable of seating over 1,100 away fans with the remainder of the allocation shared with the home supporters.

Note: Seating is unreserved so if you have a preference or want the best seat possible, make sure you get to the ground early.

Best Pubs near ground

Whilst there are a reasonable number of boozers around the stadium itself, away fans are often advised to give them a wide berth as they usually only permit home supporters.

Pubs for home fans include The Rising Sun, Coopers Arms and The Robin which is slightly further away although you can always check with doormen/signs.

Bristol City center itself is brimming with pubs and bars, and it is highly unlikely that you won’t find anywhere suitable to drink en-route to the ground. Depending on which train station you are traveling into you have quite a lot of choice.

Close to the Temple Meads Stadion there is the Knights Templar Wetherpoons Pub which is always popular and if the weather permits, heading north to the River Avon to drink at either The Rose of Denmark or the Pump House is always recommended.

Food - Places to eat

Immediately within the environs of Ashton Gate Stadium there are a few restaurants, with the diametrically located KFC and Al’s Tikka Grill two of the more popular offerings on match day due to their proximity.

There are also plenty of other fast-food restaurants such as Chip shops located along the A3029 from Parson Street Station, and the B3120 North street if you are coming in from the direction of Bedminster.

Inside the stadium the typical food fare is of course on offer including sausage rolls, pies and burgers.

Bristol City Club Shop

Bristol City operate a club shop at Community Stadium without their own online store, although you can purchase official merchandise from the club’s partner Bristol Sport Megastore. The opening times for store at the ground are as follows:

  • Monday – Friday: 9.00 am – 5.00 pm
  • Saturday – 9.00 am – 1.00 pm
  • Sunday: Closed

The club shop is also open for a few hours presumably until kick-off when there are home matches but exact opening hours for matchdays are unavailable.

For more information you could always send an email to [email protected] or phone the store on 0117 9630 637.

Can you take a stadium Tour?

Bristol City buck the trend of lower league teams not doing stadium tours by offering fans the chance to undertake a fully guided 45 minute tour of the facilities at Ashton Gate.

Taking place every other Wednesday at 4.45 pm, the tour costs just £8 for adults and £5 for anyone under 16 and takes in usually restricted access areas such as the home dressing room, the pitch and dugouts, players’ tunnel and even the directors box.

For more information and to book your place you can visit the tour page, phone the ticket office on 0117 963 0600 option 1 or go to the ground and speak to a member of staff at the megastore.

How to buy Bristol City Tickets

Tickets to see City play at home are best purchased online via Bristol Sport E-ticketing site although you could also phone the ticket office on 0117 963 0600, or send an email to [email protected] for more information.

Ticket prices for the Championship are obfuscated due to the online ticket merchant and due to the fact that The Robins haven’t released an official announcement regarding prices. Below is a sample ticket price.

Sample ticket prices

  • Adults: From £20.00
  • Concessions: From £15.00
  • Under 19s: from £12.00
  • Under 8s: From £7.00

Ashton Gate Stadium, the home of Bristol City is located in the South-West of the city, with an all-seater capacity of 21,497.

Its most recent addition is the Atyeo Stand at the West end of the ground, a covered, single-tier stand which replaced open terracing in 1994. It is named after City’s all-time leading goalscorer, John Atyeo, who died in 1993.

Visiting fans are housed in the Wedlock Stand, behind the goal at the south-east end of the ground, which was built as a covered terrace in 1928 and converted to seats in the 1990s.

Several away fans have noted that other than the impressive-looking Atyeo Stand, the interior of Ashton Gate is run-down, with the facilities in need of improvement. Seating in the away section has been generally described as “basic,” though legroom is ample. Most fans have been impressed by the atmosphere within the ground, the low roof of the Wedlock Stand producing excellent acoustics. Additionally, a small band often occupies a corner of the Atyeo Stand, helping to rouse the home support.

Booked our work Christmas Party at Ashton Gate for their Casino Royale Party for a group of 18 people. The room looked beautiful as did all the guests. Every member of our group thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Food was excellent and music was perfect mix of party tunes. Definitely looking at booking for next year and looking into any other tribute nights they hold. Well done on a great night.
Came with friends for the take that concert. Was very well organised. Good info beforehand. Queues for the bar and porta-loos great for the amount of people who attended. Didn’t wait very long at all for drinks or toilets. Staff very friendly and helpful, they let me out of a different exit to avoid the queues as being pregnant meant I could access the toilet a bit quicker 🙂 I was very impressed by the great staff and the organisation.

Bedminster FC played at Ashton Gate Stadium until they merged with Bristol City in 1900. The combined club first played at St John’s Lane, the home of Bristol City, before returning to Ashton Gate in 1904.

The stadium was significantly improved over the years, and in 1913 it hosted an international match between England and Wales. In 1935, an FA Cup match between Preston North End and Ashton Gate drew 43,335 fans.

The Williams Stand, a new primary stand, was inaugurated in 1958. The rebuilt Dolman Stand was built on the opposite side twelve years later, in 1970.

Until the 1990s, when it was transformed into an all-seater, the ground remained virtually untouched. A new Atyeo Stand was built behind one of the goals at the same time (in 1994). A second lower deck was added to the Dolman Stand a year later.

Bristol City began looking into the possibility of developing a new modern stadium in the early 2000s. The Ashton Vale Stadium, a 30,000-seater just south of Ashton Gate in the Ashton Vale district, was planned, but it was delayed and then scrapped due to strong opposition from local residents and environmental organisations.

Instead, Bristol City revealed plans for the redevelopment of Ashton Gate in late 2013, initially as a backup to the Ashton Vale proposals, but since April 2014 as their primary intentions.

Both the Williams and Wedlock Stands were constructed over a two-year period beginning in the summer of 2014, while the other two stands were restored. The project was finished in 2016, and the capacity was increased from 21,000 to 27,000 seats.

Bristol City tickets can be purchased online or by calling +44 (0) 117 963 0600.

On the day of the match, tickets are also available at the stadium. Bristol City only sells out on rare occasions.

Bristol City’s home matches are divided into two pricing groups. The lowest Silver tickets range from £23.00 for a seat behind the goal to £31.00 for a prime seat in the main stand. The more expensive Gold matches include tickets ranging from £28.00 to £36.00. Tickets purchased on the day are £5.00 more expensive.

Clues in the name.. are we doing any? And how do we book if there are?

My son has never been to the gate and ideally like to take him before breaking his heart gently, as aim to get us both season tickets next season.

Great point, I did an Arsenal tour recently and it was well managed and easy to do. Not even hosted.

Says coming soon on the website .  you get to see a fair bit of the stadium as part of the mascot package (u12s only), and parents do to. Might be a bit early for him though if he’s never been before. Can thoroughly recommend it though

Yes we are doing this for the Cardiff game my lad and my nephew are mascots, they both can't wait, hoping it won't be too much for them and they've both been going to games for a while now

They will love it! They will probably get a bit nervous prior to going out on the pitch but that’s normal for them.

My girl did it for her 11th birthday, said it was the best day ever! Make sure they’ve got something for the players to sign, I left it a bit last minute and had to buy a city calendar and pen on the day. Loads of photo opportunities before ko when you go around the stadium but they don’t allow photos in the changing room.  It’s a great day for both the kids and the adults and something City do well in my opinion.

My advice would be to ask @JerrySLO  in the sub section

He has largely been responsible for arranging and giving them in the recent past

Is there much point in that section anymore? It seems a lot of questions are answered by yourself, which is a good thing on your part.

I've been a couple of times through my son's football teams. I can't remember the name of the contact but he was brilliant.

Jerry organises stadium tours throughout the year, and occasionally during school holidays. I went on one with the kids in October 2022. You can reach out to Jerry at [email protected] (email on the website so I'm not offering you any contact details that are not already "out there") to enquire when he might have availability for a tour. Good luck.

Thanks for advice i will get him something for the players to sign, we did a stadium tour of old trafford ( Brother-in-law is a united fan) they got the kids to walk out the tunnel with the music playing my lad was buzzing and that was in an empty stadium so god knows what he is going to be like at our ground when its full. Glad your daughter enjoyed it. I'm sure it will be a memory she will never forget

I led the away team out when Joe and I did the tour.  30 people formed the Man Utd line, Joe led them out, 4 of us the away team.  I pretended I was Gerrard leading Liverpool out.

The OT tour is well done.  They made a big fuss of Joe.

Love this Dave what an experience. You are right it was really well  done.

On the subject of stadium tours I'm taking a friend to her first England game at Wembley in a few weeks against Brazil, we're staying London and doing the Wembley tour the Sunday morning - has anyone been on it?

The last Wembley tour I went on was just after we lost to Stoke before the rebuild

What is the mascot package like? Do you as parents get to meet the players etc? Where do you sit?

I've done the Wembley tour twice. It's really good. The guides are excellent and it's very relaxed, plenty of time for photos etc and it was professionally done with just the right amount of facts without being boring or overly educational if you know what I mean.

😄

I've also done the West Ham/London stadium tour a couple of years ago. That was really good too. I would like to do the Spurs one at some point. I'm not a fan, just like seeing new grounds.

2 hours ago, Shauntaylor85 said: What is the mascot package like? Do you as parents get to meet the players etc? Where do you sit?

You do the tour around the changing rooms etc with the kids then you go off up to the Heineken lounge whilst the kids meet the players. The kids meet you up at the Heineken lounge for some grub then they go off to get ready for going out for kick off with a bit of a warm up on the side off the pitch . They go out with the  players at the start of the game and you take your seats in front of the Heineken lounge . They then bring the kids up to you afterwards .  that’s about the long and short of it if it’s still the same .

you get photographer photos of them about a week later

Regarding City, I've been lucky enough to have been in our changing rooms etc and have seen a lot of behind the scenes stuff that is out of bounds. It is very interesting and surprising.

I've also been in hospitality in the Lansdown and Heineken Lounges, and I think it's a real shame that some people haven't seen the facilities we have. I don't mean this in a 'look at me I've had hospo' sort of way, but I just remember how absolutely mind blown I was when I was shown these areas for the first time after the redevelopment. The attention to detail and quality rivals most hotels.

Jerry does do occasional tours, but it's very ad hoc. If you got access to a child's football team, eg a parent or something you got a chance that way. Similarly I know he has taken overseas visitors or very ill people on a tour as a 'bucket list' request. But in general there is no paid for tour you can book online which is a shame. I'm hoping one day to see the HPC but that is very locked down but occasional tours happen there I believe.

Like I said there are stadium tours occasionally, mainly in the school holidays. I don't know why the club thinks only kids are interested and excludes everyone else pretty much.

Where are you going to get tickets? Which Stand? I've just moved back to Bristol after 8 years in California and aiming to get a season ticket trying to decide where.

Lansdown is the best stand by far - I’ve been in all of them over the years.

With regard to the HPC I wonder if tours could be arranged with Jerry during the now brief close season.

Perhaps small parties shown around for a donation to the foundation or children’s hospice?

This would be good. I'm sure people would be willing to pay/donate. I would.

The first artists for the concert, dubbed Ashton Gate Presents BS3, will be announced on Monday, 8 January.

Venue Director Jenny Hutchinson said: "Our team has worked hard to curate this new show for the stadium."

Photo of empty stands and pitch in Ashton Gate Stadium

She added: "Ashton Gate has hosted world-renowned acts such as Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Elton John, Muse and Spice Girls in recent years and we have fine-tuned our concert operation, teaming up with experts in the industry to ensure we deliver a truly spectacular concert.

"We are always proud to deliver memorable experiences for our audiences, so we are thrilled to be able to present our own show at the stadium.

"Ashton Gate Presents BS3 will lay the foundations for us to deliver more multi-artist shows in the future!"

A spokesperson for the stadium said the event "It represents our deep-rooted pride in our community".

They added the concert would bring "the biggest and most popular artists in the world to Bristol".

bristol city stadium tours

Liverpool will kick off their pre-season tour in the USA this summer with a game against Real Betis at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on Friday July 26 (kick-off 7.30pm EST).

The Reds last met the Spanish outfit back in the autumn of 2005 in the group stage of the Champions League, when Rafael Benitez's defending champions won 2-1 away from home before a goalless draw at Anfield.

The club will return to the USA this summer for the first time since 2019 and matches have already been announced with Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United.

The Arsenal game takes place on July 31 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia and will be followed by the encounter with United at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina on August 3.

A pre-sale code will be made available for the Real Betis fixture for LFC Official Members, season ticket holders, official LFC supporters clubs, hospitality members and international academies. This can be used to purchase tickets from 3pm BST/10am EST/7am PST on Wednesday April 10.

Tickets will go on general sale to the public from 2pm BST/9am EST/6am PST on Thursday April 11 via Ticketmaster.

Ben Latty, the club's commercial director, said: "Adding Pittsburgh to our pre-season tour schedule is a great way to start our eagerly anticipated return to the USA.

"We were delighted to quickly sell out our fixtures against Arsenal and Manchester United on this tour and are equally excited to be able to offer our supporters in the States another opportunity to see Liverpool FC play. Real Betis will come with a strong squad and it's going to be a great occasion in another iconic setting, in another fantastic US city."
