10 U.S. Restaurants Made This List of the World's 50 Best Pizzerias — Here's Where to Find Them

Don't worry, an Italian spot was named number one.

We can probably all agree that even an average slice of  pizza  isn’t that bad, purely because it’s pizza. But it is nice to know there are pies out there that can change your life — and that there are websites dedicated to sharing exactly where you can find them.

In early December, the travel site Big 7 Travel unveiled  its annual list  of the 50 best pizza joints in the world. Although its top-ranked spot is appropriately Italian, there are a few surprise destinations in the mix, too.

According to Big 7, the world’s best pizza is served at  10 by Diego Vitagliano Pizzeria  in Naples,  Italy .

“10 by Diego Vitagliano offers something really special,” the site explains about its choice. “As well as a superb Margherita and Marinara, Vitagliano injects real culinary creativity into his more contemporary iterations [...] The team here only uses high-quality seasonal ingredients, and there isn’t a single pizza on the menu that will set you back more than €10 ($10.60).”

Vitagliano was the only Neapolitan pizzaiolo to make the Big 7 list, which may come as a shock to many. After all, Naples takes the art of pizza-making seriously — so seriously that  UNESCO recognized  its process for making pizza on its Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

The rest of the Big 7 Travel’s Top 10 pizza spots included:

2. Ken’s Artisan Pizza, Portland, Oregon  3. Peppe Pizzeria, Paris, France 4. The Good Son, Toronto, Canada 5. Seu Pizza Illuminati, Rome, Italy 6. Pizzeria Bedia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania  7. 48h Pizza e gnocchi, Melbourne, Australia  8. La Pizza è Bella, Brussels, Belgium  9. Via Toledo Enopizzeria, Vienna, Austria 10. What the Crust, Cairo, Egypt

Several more U.S.-based pizzerias made the complete list, including Tony’s Pizza Napoletana, San Francisco; Bricco Coal Fired Pizza, Westmont, New Jersey; Del Popolo, San Francisco; Buddy’s Pizza, Detroit; Pijja Palace, Los Angeles; Pizza Delicious, New Orleans; Pequod’s, Chicago, and Ops, Brooklyn, NY.

For any New Yorkers who may be up in arms that nothing from the other four boroughs made Big 7’s list, just know you don’t need to panic. There are plenty of other lists out there, including  Food & Wine’s list of the Best Pizzas in Every State  or this older list of the  Best Pizza Places in the U.S. , which should surely please New Yorkers and everyone else around the nation, too.

EnjoyTravel.com acquires Big 7 Travel to drive north America growth

UK car rental comparison site seals deal for undisclosed sum

UK car rental comparison site EnjoyTravel.com has announced the acquisition of US travel inspiration site Big 7 Travel for an undisclosed amount.

EnjoyTravel.com said the deal “strengthens its position to connect with new users and bring its unique booking technology to the north American market”.

Big 7 Travel, which was launched in early 2019 by Niall Harbison and Sarah Clayton-Lea, claims to have millions of users and covers more than 150 countries.

Harbison will exit the company while Clayton-Lea will retain a minority stake and continue to manage existing content and marketing teams.

Martin Mansell, chief executive of EnjoyTravel.com, will become group chief executive and oversee growth of both companies.

He said: “We are delighted with our acquisition of Big 7 Travel. The two businesses will come together and create something really unique.

“While launching new bookable travel products on Big 7 Travel, we now have an absolutely amazing content team and traffic resource to help EnjoyTravel.com develop and launch new travel-related products as well as enter into new markets, with particular focus on north America.

“As we expect the travel industry to start coming back to life early in the new year, we believe Big 7 Travel will prove to be a magnificent addition to our business and are now set for strong growth in 2021 and beyond.”

Clayton-Lea added: “It’s an exciting move for Big 7 Travel and doubles down on our belief as a team that we are creating content that consistently hits the mark.”

“While the travel industry has experienced a difficult year, we are confident that the return will be massive.

“Together, EnjoyTravel.com and Big 7 Travel are the perfect match to transform the trip planning experience from start to finish.”

Palawan, boracay hailed in big 7 travel’s world’s most beautiful places.

Alyssa Leyda-Aldemo

The Philippines’ prime destinations – Palawan and Boracay – have been listed among the Top 50 Most Beautiful Places in the World by Big 7 Travel.

Palawan, the 2020 World’s Best Island , was ranked 8th while the Travelers Choice Top Beach in Asia – Boracay claimed the 18th spot in the official updated list released on October 30, 2020.

The popular travel content site included the two most popular islands in the Philippines among the world’s most “magnificent and wonderful places” possessing culturally rich ancient sites and jaw-dropping sceneries.

Big 7 Travel which earlier listed the Palawan islands as the world’s best Bucket List travel spot for the new decade and among the most popular post-lockdown travel destinations , described it as the home of diverse wildlife, intricate landscapes, and underwater beauty.

“This immaculate string of islands is seen as some of the best in the world and it’s pretty obvious why. Palawan is a fantastic triple threat of diverse wildlife, pristine landscapes and subterranean marvels. Because of its stretch across the Sulu and South China seas, it boasts a huge variety of nature from steep limestone cliffs to jawdropping coves and unbelievable beaches,” the Big 7 Travel feature described the island.

The rejuvenated Boracay was hailed for its serene beaches, sumptuous foods, and casual nightlife.

“Just an hour away from Manila, Boracay is tucked away in The Philippines’ Visayan region. This pristine island is one of the world’s top destinations for some R&R. Tranquil beaches, casual nightlife, and lush tropical scenery makes it easy to see why. The peaceful island also boasts a unique food scene and has managed to maintain its unique Aklanon culture.”

The Department of Tourism (DOT) celebrated the added milestone for the country’s prime destinations as it can inspire tourists to explore again the wonders of the Philippines in a Facebook post on October 30.

“The DOT is optimistic that the inclusion in this prestigious list will inspire more people to regain confidence to travel, helping the Philippines’ tourism industry to recover after this challenging period,” said Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat.

Check out the list of Big 7 Travel’s most beautiful places here .

Palawan and Boracay have received countless travel awards over the years including the world’s best in 2015 and 2018 according to Condé Nast Traveler, voted world’s best by Travel & Leisure in 2016 , and voted best islands in 2017 by international tourists.

SEND CHEERS in the comments below to Palawan and Boracay for being hailed in Big 7 Travel as the world’s most beautiful places.

These are considered the 'best beaches in the world' right now

the big 7 travel

Global travel site Big 7 Travel has released its annual list of 'The 50 Best Beaches In The World '.

The list is now in its 5th year, using aggregated scores from previous media results, official Blue Flag locations, social media popularity and contributions from the Big 7 Travel editorial team, these are the most amazing beaches to visit this year.

It's a diverse list, with pink sand covered in crushed seashells, crystalline lagoons and plenty of Islands, with two Australian favourites also featuring.

Here are the top 10 'best beaches' in the world.

  • Travel News
  • Beach Holidays

10. Hyams Beach, Australia

10. Hyams Beach, Australia

Hyams Beach is just three hours south of Sydney, but between its pine forests and white sands, it feels worlds apart. It's an excellent spot for snorkelling, thanks to its gentle waves, and it's popular with stingrays too. Keep an eye out for playful dolphins for the ultimate photo opp

9. Lang Co Beach, Vietnam

9. Lang Co Beach, Vietnam

This little-known beach is a small cove below the Hai Van Pass – an incredibly scenic road that snakes through the mountains of Central Vietnam.

The beach looks beautiful from above, but even better below – it's the perfect place to stop off and tuck into a fresh seafood lunch on the beach.

8. Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos

8. Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos

This pristine beach is the shining jewel of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The entire beach is just over 3 kilometres long, with no pollution – just pure, white sand and clean water.

A barrier reef found 1.6km out protects Grace Bay from the ocean swells of the Atlantic, so you can swim with ease.

7. Navagio Beach, Greece

7. Navagio Beach, Greece

Named after the 1983 shipwreck, this secluded cove is one of Greece's most photographed beaches, for good reason.

The remnants of the boat sit in the centre of the huge white sandy beach, lapped by turquoise waters and backed by soaring cliffs. It's only accessible by boat, with trips lasting 30 minutes.

6. Source d'Argent, Seychelles

6. Source d'Argent, Seychelles

It's one of the most photographed beaches in the world, but that doesn't make it any less magical.

Beloved for its shallow warm waters and shimmering sand, you'll need to walk through the old L'Union Estate coconut plantation to access the beach.

5. Whitehaven Beach, Whitsundays, Australia

5. Whitehaven Beach, Whitsundays, Australia

Making it to all the way up the ranks to fifth spot is this brilliant 7 kilometre white silica sand beach, considered among one of the purest in the world.

The largest of 74 islands in the Whitsundays, the island is right in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. As well as being one of the world's most unspoiled and beautiful beaches, the sand doesn't retain heat, so it's a fantastic place to walk barefoot, even on a hot day.

4. Kwenda beach, Zanzibar

4. Kwenda beach, Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a haven of white sand beaches, but Kendwa piques it for us. The blinding white sand melts into the emerald waters – a picture-postcard sight.

The beach is lined with hotels, restaurants, and bars, but it's kept pristine and clean. Sip on fresh coconuts, get a massage, or enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach shacks.

3. Jalousie Beach, St Lucia

3. Jalousie Beach, St Lucia

Coming in at number three, this tropical paradise of white sands, crystal clear waters, lush vegetation, and volcanic peaks is a beauty.

Sugar Beach Resort takes up most of the beach, so you'll often hear people refer to this beach as 'Sugar Beach'. It is open to the public, though. There's a 1,800-foot drop in the sea at the base of the volcanic peak, Petit Piton, so it's a hit with snorkellers and scuba divers.

2. Cabo San Juan Beach, Colombia

2. Cabo San Juan Beach, Colombia

Found in Tayrona National Parkm it's a long hike through the tropics to get to the beach, and you'll have to bring your own water. There is a restaurant when you get to the beach, though. The main draw to Cabo San Juan Beach is the campsite – a night under the stars, listening to the calm sea lap onto shore sounds like heaven to us.

1. White Beach, Port Barton, Philippines

1. White Beach, Port Barton, Philippines

Coming out on top is White Beach in the Philippines.

The only way to reach the beach is by hopping on a boat from Port Barton or taking a very bumpy journey in a 4x4 – being hard to reach means the beach is clean and wonderfully quiet.

Think hammocks, powdery white sand, kayaks to rent, and of course, crystal-clear water. All with a backdrop of lush forests. Kayak over to Coconut Beach for a mini adventure.

Two Nashville Spots Make Big 7 Travel’s 2023 List of Best Rooftop Bars

the big 7 travel

Big 7 Travel released its annual list of Best Rooftop Bars in The USA 2023.

Out of the 50 rooftop bars on the list, Nashville hotspot White Limozeen took the 18th spot. Big 7 Travel shared, “This pink paradise proves that the best things in life come in very large packages. Perched atop the Graduate Hotel, this over-the-top rooftop experience is a homage to the iconic country singer, Dolly Parton. In true Dolly spirit, the bar is decked out in varying shades of pink, with crushed-velvet seating, gilded accents and fringing – everywhere. Outside, patrons can laze around the pool sipping themed cocktails, like the magenta-hued Queen of Rodeo. Don’t leave without a snap next to the enormous pink chicken-wire bust of the queen herself.”

Ahead of White Limozeen at number 15 on the list is Acme Feed & Seed on Broadway. They shared, “Situated slap-bang in the heart of the honky-tonk scene in Nashville’s Lower Broadway, Acme Feed & Seed offers up to 22,000 sq. ft (2043 sq. m) of cocktail, culinary and entertainment space. The rooftop bar offers 360 views across town, with sweeping views of Broadway, the Cumberland River, Nissan Stadium and Riverfront Park. Living up to its moniker of ‘Music City’, you’ll find live music on the roof daily. Come hungry and order their famous hot chicken. You won’t regret it.”

Kaua‘i’s ‘Tunnels’ makes Big 7 Travel’s Best Beaches in the World list

the big 7 travel

Tunnels Beach on the North Shore of Kaua‘i has earned a spot on a global travel site’s “50 Best Beaches in the World” list.

Big 7 Travel put Tunnels, also known as Makua, at No. 21 on its list, describing Tunnels as the “ultimate snorkeling spot, with the picturesque backdrop of Mount Makana and lush jungles.”

Lava tubes form the many underwater caverns at Tunnels, which give the beach its name.

Tunnels was the sole Hawai‘i beach to score a placement on Big 7’s list. Other included beaches included San Fruttuoso (a small pebbled beach in Italy) and Butterfly Valley in Turkey.

Big 7 Travel awarded its No. 1 spot to White Beach near Port Barton in the Philippines.

“This gorgeous stretch of sand near Port Barton is a pristine gem. The only way to reach the beach is by hopping on a boat from Port Barton or taking a very bumpy journey in a 4×4 – being hard to reach means the beach is clean and wonderfully quiet,” the Big 7 Travel list reads. “Think hammocks, powdery white sand, kayaks to rent, and of course, crystal-clear water. All with a backdrop of lush forests. Kayak over to Coconut Beach for a mini adventure.”

the big 7 travel

In its annual list of 50 Most Instagrammable Places in the World, Singapore outranked the likes of Paris, London and Tokyo to clinch top spot based on a scoring system that analysed the number of hashtags for each destination, survey results from its social audience and input from its editorial team.

Information from Big 7 Travel's LinkedIn page showed that the publication is based in Leeds, England. It was set up in 2019 and has more than 300,000 followers on both Instagram and Twitter.

In the article on its annual list, it said that Singapore is full of photo opportunities “from the iconic Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay to the vibrant kaleidoscope of street art through Haji Lane”.

“Be sure to stroll the streets of Koon Seng Road known for their colourful houses and don’t forget to procure the Tan Teng Niah’s house for a truly breathtaking photo,” it added.

In the publication's 2021 list, Singapore came in 11th, with Tokyo in top spot. In 2020, Singapore came in fifth, with Sydney in number one position.

In the latest list for 2022, the beach resort of Boracay in the Philippines and Hawaii's third largest island, Oahu, came in second and third respectively.

The Japanese capital Tokyo, New York City in the United States, the mountain town of Banff in Canada, the Amalfi Coast in Italy, the American city of Chicago, Portugal's capital Lisbon and Ha Long Bay in Vietnam made up the rest of the top 10 list.

11 Birmingham area pizzerias make Big 7 Travel’s 25 best places for pizza in Alabama list

Pat Byington

  • LAST UPDATED 12/13/20

A Really Hot Story

Earlier this month, Birmingham area pizzerias dominated the Big 7 Travel – 25 best places for pizza in Alabama list.

The international foodie and travel digital publication named 11 local pizza establishments to its statewide compilation.  Avondale’s Post Office Pies was declared the best according to the experts.

Big 7 Travel

What is Big 7 Travel? Known for its “Best 50 in America” lists,  Big 7 Travel has featured several Birmingham area food establishments in their “best of lists,” including brick & tin in downtown Birmingham and Mountain Brook ,  for having the best sandwich in Alabama  and Tony’s Hot Dogs in Pelham for its hot dogs. The digital publication has approximately 1.4 million followers worldwide on its social channels .

How did the Birmingham Area Rank?

So how our local pizzerias fare in the top 25 best place for a pizza ranking.

Drumroll please….

#1 – Post Office Pies

IMG 0854 11 Birmingham area pizzerias make Big 7 Travel's 25 best places for pizza in Alabama list

Really no surprise here.  Just this fall, Post Office Pies was named one of the best pizza joints in the nation by USA Today.  Gotta

#5 – Davenport’s Pizza Palace

Davenport's Pizza

Established in 1964, Davenport’s is one of the original pizza restaurants not only in the Birmingham area, but the entire South. A Mountain Brook institution, the Davenport’s is known for its made from scratch pizza and family friendly atmosphere.

#10 – Jet Pizza in Hoover

Forget New York or Chicago style pizzas – you need to try Detroit style.  Very popular in the midwest, Jet Pizza in Hoover is the way to go if you are looking for cheesy pizzas served in squares.

#11- Bettola

Located in the heart of Pepper Place, Bettola is casual upscale Italian.  You are going to love the wood-fired artisanal pizzas, house-made pastas, specialty cocktails and wine.

#15 – Tortugas Homemade Pizza

tortugas pizza 11 Birmingham area pizzerias make Big 7 Travel's 25 best places for pizza in Alabama list

Located adjacent to the Good People Brewery, nothing is better than having a fresh pint of Good People IPA and Tortugas Chicago style dip pan pizza.  Personally, I look this combination before a Birmingham Barons game.

#18 – Pies and Pints

I discovered Pies and Pints   a couple of years ago after I did a story for Bham Now on Adamson Ford.  The pizzas were out this world, and of course there was an ample beer selection.

#20 – Carpenetti’s Pizza

Located in Moody, Carpenetti’s has been around since 1997 – 22 years.

#21 – Blaze Pizza

Birmingham, Blaze Pizza, pizza, gluten free, gluten-free pizza

Got friends seeking a gluten free option in pizzas: Here is what Bham Now had to say about Blaze late last year:

What I love about pizza joints like Blaze Pizza is that you have the option to build your own pie. So if you’re looking to avoid gluten, you can opt for cauliflower crust. There is also a keto crust if you’re following the keto diet craze.

#22 – Slice Birmingham

E350F67B BAEC 4F41 B2B4 FE08EB23181A 11 Birmingham area pizzerias make Big 7 Travel's 25 best places for pizza in Alabama list

Slice has locations in the Lakeview District and Vestavia Hills. Love their pizzas, but also their community spirit.  Slice buys from local sources and of course we all love SliceFest !

#23 – Vecchia Pizzeria and Mercato

Another classic Italian restaurant, Vecchia Pizzeria  is located in Hoover near The Preserve.

#25 – Your Pie

Your Pie 11 Birmingham area pizzerias make Big 7 Travel's 25 best places for pizza in Alabama list

Finally, a place on the North end  of downtown Birmingham.  There are several Your Pie locations around the Magic City, but my favorite is in the UpTown district.

Now the big question… who did Big 7 Travel miss on their list? Let us know by tagging Bham Now in the comment section or send us a note at [email protected]

Southwest passengers now get a $75 voucher for big flight disruptions

Southwest Airlines has launched a new compensation fund for inconvenienced fliers, offering $75 vouchers to passengers whose flights are significantly delayed or canceled for a reason within the airline’s control.

The compensation fund is part of the airline’s $140 million settlement with the Transportation Department, following Southwest’s operational meltdown in December 2022. A mix of winter weather, holiday travel and failing Southwest scheduling systems resulted in nearly 17,000 canceled or significantly delayed flights, affecting 2 million passengers. Southwest agreed to pay the government $35 million and create a $90 million voucher fund for future fliers impacted by operational errors, on top of the $600 million it paid out in refunds and reimbursements to customers impacted by the holiday debacle.

While the original agreement terms slated the voucher program to start Tuesday, Southwest rolled out the fund April 16. Any passenger who arrives at their final destination three or more hours after the scheduled arrival time for domestic flights or six hours for international flights can request a $75 voucher. The money is available only for fliers facing snafus within Southwest’s control, such as a mechanical issue or swapping planes.

To receive the money, customers can fill out a form online . The request must be submitted within one year from the delayed or canceled flight. Southwest should get back to customers within 30 days, according to Southwest spokeswoman Laura Swift. The compensation fund is expected to run for three years.

Last week, the Biden administration announced new rules for airlines to strengthen passenger protection and increase transparency in the industry. Under the new regulations, airlines are required to streamline the refund process for canceled flights and abandon hidden fees by disclosing the price of surcharges for luggage and changes to reservations upfront.

While announcing those rules, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also mentioned Southwest’s vouchers as a customer service measure that could influence other airlines.

“This is the month when those vouchers as part of the Southwest settlement kick in, and Southwest will now, because we are making them, really lead the market on that,” Buttigieg said. “It’ll be very interesting to see what other airlines respond — not as punishment, but by way of competition.”

In a statement Tuesday, DOT officials said they will be “closely monitoring” Southwest’s program, requiring the airline to submit an annual report documenting the voucher expenditures over the next three years.

Hannah Sampson contributed to this report.

2 more giant pandas to arrive in California at San Diego Zoo: Here are their names

KGO logo

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGO) -- New details are emerging about a pair of pandas headed from China to San Diego.

According to a release from China's National Forestry and Grassland Administration , a pair of pandas from the Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center at Chengu has been selected for the zoo. Their names are "Yunchuan" (male) and Xinbao (female).

The deal was originally announced in February.

It has been five years since the San Diego Zoo last had pandas.

Yun Chuan, a nearly five-year-old male panda, who is described as being "mild-mannered, gentle and lovable," has a deep connection with the San Diego Zoo, according to the alliance.

His mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at the San Diego Zoo in 2007 and lived at the facility for 23 years.

The San Diego Zoo will now begin to upgrade enclosures so the animals have a larger living space.

RELATED: San Francisco Zoo to receive giant pandas from China, Mayor Breed announces

Once everything is approved, the two bears could arrive in San Diego by the end of summer.

The news comes more than a week after San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced on April 20, 2024 during an economic trip to China, she signed a letter of intent to bring a pair pandas to the San Francisco Zoo sometime in 2025.

The San Francisco Zoo will have to raise close to $25 million to upgrade a temporary facility for pandas from China, in addition to a permanent habitat. The zoo also has to secure permits at local and federal levels for the enclosures. The zoo would lease the pandas for approximately $1 million per year.
