Julien’s Auctions is proud to announce the auction of The King of Pop, Michael Jackson’s, wardrobe items and ephemera from the collection of designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush. These pieces have not been seen since Jackson wore them on stage and in his videos. These very special items are offered for sale for the first time on December 2, 2012 at the Julien’s Auctions Beverly Hills Gallery as part of our annual Icons & Idols auction.

The exhibit and auction include the designs created by Michael Jackson’s long time costume designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush, which are also featured in the highly anticipated illustrated book by Michael Bush,  THE KING OF STYLE: Dressing Michael Jackson , which will be published by Insight Editions and available October 30, 2012. The collection of Jackson clothing and wardrobe offered for sale, and seen in the book, showcases Michael Jackson’s love of fashion and huge impact on popular culture. Many of the items featured in the book will be included in the auction with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas and Guide Dogs of America in Los Angeles.

Sale highlights include a 30th Anniversary of Madison Square Garden show signed prototype helmet which was wired to illuminate a row of battery powered lights below the visor. The helmet is signed in black marker to designer Michael Bush and states “To Bush Love Michael Jackson,” and Jackson’s “Scream” video costume which includes a pair of black spandex pants with matching long sleeve shirt and mesh tuck strap. Each costume piece is marked on the interior in gold marker “2/2” or “2/2 M.J.J,” indicating that two costumes were created for Jackson’s famous video shoot. Michael Jackson’s Captain EO white spandex shirt featuring ribbed neck, zip closure and a rainbow motif is also included as well as the King of Pop’s Awards Ceremony jacket which is a black wool jacket embellished with red armband, gold tone metal floral buttons, metallic embroidered crown patch at chest and buckled leather straps at right shoulder. Jackson wore this jacket when he attended the 3rd annual Soul Train Awards in 1989 where he was honored with the Sammy Davis, Jr. Heritage Award, the Heritage Award for Career Achievement and awards for his single and video for “Man in the Mirror.”

There is no doubt that Michael Jackson was a global fashion icon as well as award winning and beloved musician. His wardrobe dictated many of the styles throughout the last few decades. Jackson played a very intimate role in the designs and completion of every costume and piece of clothing he wore both on stage and in his personal life. Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush shared a very personal and close 25 year relationship with the artist which is rich in story-telling that runs throughout this collection, as well as detailed in the upcoming book.

A portion of the proceeds of the auction will benefit two charities, Guide Dogs of America ( GuideDogsofAmerica.org ) and Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas ( www.nah.org ).

Shipping: Buyer pays all shipping costs. All shipping has been contracted by Art Pack Inc. Invoices must be paid in full prior to shipping. After the buyer has paid for their item(s) through Julien’s, they must contact  Art Pack Inc. to coordinate shipping. All shipping inquiries can be directed to Art Pack Inc at  [email protected]  or by phone at (800) 388-5250. Art Pack Inc. accepts payment by Check, Bank wire, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express. The buyer is responsible to make contact regarding any concerns or shipping related questions. Please allow 2-12 weeks for the delivery of your property depending on the size of the auction, the receiver's destination, or the mode of transportation. All auction property is shipped at the bidder's expense. Paid items may be picked up in Los Angeles after the auction. Julien's and Art Pack Inc. will not falsify or claim a lower value on custom's documents to avoid paying government fees. Julien's and Art Pack Inc. are not responsible if there is any delay in customs and are not responsible for returned shipments. The Buyer is responsible for all government fees including duties, taxes, VAT, Customs, or any unforeseen charges. The buyer agrees that Julien’s Auctions will not be responsible for shipping of the property after the auction and they will deal directly with Art Pack Inc.

Bids will not be accepted from those persons under the age of eighteen (18) without written consent of said persons parent or legal guardian. Written consent must acknowledge the terms and conditions of sale. This written consent constitutes an agreement to be bound thereby on behalf of the bidder. Bidder registration is required for all persons wishing to bid for Julien's Auctions. Any person registering to bid by phone, absentee, or in person will complete a Bidder Registration Form. Online bidders will submit a completed form through julienslive.com.

All items are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is the confidential minimum price acceptable to the Consignor. During a live auction the auctioneer may open any lot by bidding on behalf of the Consignor and may bid up to the amount of the reserve, by placing successive or consecutive bids for a lot or bids in response to other bidders. Online sales may do the same by employing the use of a starting bid which will commence bidding at or below the reserve price agreed to by the Consignor.

Julien's reserves the right to withdraw any property before the completion of the sale and will have no liability for doing so.

We reserve the right to accept or decline any bid. Bids must be for an entire lot and each lot constitutes a separate sale. All bids are per lot unless otherwise announced at a live sale by the auctioneer. Live auction lots will be sold in their numbered sequence unless the Auctioneer directs otherwise. It is unlawful and illegal for Bidders to collude, pool, or agree with another Bidder to pay less than the fair value for lot(s). Bidders participating in both live and online auctions acknowledge that the law provides for substantial penalties in the form of treble damages and attorneys' fees and costs for those who violate these provisions. For live auctions the auctioneer will have final discretion in the event that any dispute should arise between bidders. The auctioneer will determine the successful bidder, cancel the sale, or re-offer and resell the lot or lots in dispute. Julien's will have final discretion to resolve any disputes arising after the sale and in online auctions. If any dispute arises our sale record is conclusive.

Julien's will execute order or absentee bids, and accept telephone bids as a courtesy to clients who are unable to attend the live auctions. Therefore we take no responsibility for any errors or omissions in connection with this service.

Subject to fulfillment of all of the conditions set forth herein, on the fall of the auctioneer's hammer, title to the offered lot will pass to the highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer, and such bidder thereupon (a) assumes full risk and responsibility (including without limitation, liability for or damage to frames or glass covering prints, paintings, photos, or other works), and (b) will immediately pay the full purchase price or such part as we may require. In addition to other remedies available to us by law, we reserve the right to impose from the date of sale a late charge of 1 ½% per month of the total purchase price if payment is not made in accordance with the conditions set forth herein. All property must be removed from either our premises by the purchaser at his expense not later than 10 business days following its sale and if it is not so removed, (i) a handling charge of 1% of the total purchase price per month from the tenth day after the sale until its removal will be payable to us by the purchaser, with a minimum of 5% of the total purchase price for any property not so removed within 60 days after the sale, and (ii) we may send the purchased property to a public warehouse for the account, at the risk and expense of the purchaser.

If any applicable conditions herein are not complied with the purchaser will be in default and in addition to any and all other remedies available to us and the Consignor by law, including, without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the total purchase price, including all fees, charges and expenses more fully set forth herein, we, at our option, may (a) cancel the sale of that, or any other lots sold to the defaulting purchaser at the same or any other auction, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the purchaser, or (b) resell the purchased property, whether at public auction or by private sale, or (c) effect any combination thereof. In any case, the purchaser will be liable for any deficiency, any and all costs, handling charges, late charges, expenses of both sales, our commissions on both sales at our regular rates, legal fees and expenses, collection fees and incidental damages. We may, in our sole discretion, apply any proceeds of sale then due or thereafter becoming due to the purchaser from us or any affiliated company, or any payment made by the purchaser to us or any affiliated company, where or not intended to reduce the purchaser's obligations with respect to the unpaid lot or lots, to the deficiency and any other amounts due to us or any affiliated companies. In addition, a defaulting purchaser will be deemed to have granted and assigned to us and our affiliated companies, a continuing security interest of first priority in any property or money of our owing to such purchaser in our possession or in the possession of any of our affiliated companies, and we may retain and apply such property or money as collateral security for the obligations due to us or to any affiliated company of ours. Payment will not be deemed to have been made in full until we have collected good funds. In the event the purchaser fails to pay any or all of the total purchase price for any lot and Julien's elects to pay the Consignor any portion of the sale proceeds, the purchaser acknowledges that Julien's shall have all of the rights of the Consignor to pursue the purchaser for any amounts paid to the Consignor, whether at law, in equity, or under these Conditions of Sale.

Under no circumstance will Julien's incur liability to a purchaser in excess of the purchase price actually paid. The terms and conditions of sale herein described shall be enforced in accordance with, and governed by the laws of the State of California.

Any claim or controversy arising out of or relating to the Auction, the Bidder Registration Form or any breach thereof between the registered bidder and Julien's shall be submitted to arbitration in Los Angeles County, California before an arbitrator from the Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services, Inc. ("JAMS") and conducted under its Comprehensive Arbitration Rules, as the exclusive remedy for such claim or controversy. Both parties further agree that the arbitration shall be conducted before a single JAMS arbitrator who is a retired California or federal judge or justice. By agreeing to arbitrate, the parties waive any right they have to a court or jury trial. The decision of the arbitrator shall be final and binding. The parties further agree that, upon application of the prevailing party, any Judge of the Superior Court of the State of California, for the County of Los Angeles, may enter a judgment based on the final arbitration award issued by the JAMS arbitrator, and the parties expressly agree to submit to the jurisdiction of this Court for such a purpose. The prevailing party shall be entitled to recover the party's attorneys' fees and costs incurred in connection with the arbitration.

Copyright Notice : Buyers of the property will not acquire any copyright or similar right whatsoever to the property, music or likenesses contained therein of Michael Jackson. The buyer may not in any  way reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works of the property or copyright embodied in the property or cause anyone else to, without the prior written consent of the Estate of Michael Jackson  who retain such rights.

Terms of Guarantee

"Attribution" is defined by Julien's as the creator, period, culture, source of origin, as the case may be as set forth in the Bold Type Heading of a lot in a live auction catalogue or the lot Title of an online auction, as amended by any oral or written salesroom notices and announcements or online notices and announcements. We make no warranties to information not contained in an online lot heading or information not contained in the Bold Type Heading of any live auction catalogue subject to the exclusions listed below.

Julien's warrants the "Attribution", as defined above and subject to the exclusions listed below, of a lot for a period of five years from the date of sale and only to the original purchaser on record at the auction. If it is determined to our satisfaction that the "Attribution" is incorrect, the sale will be rescinded if the lot is returned to the Julien's Auctions warehouse facility in the same condition in which it was at the time of sale. In order to satisfy Julien's that the "Attribution" of a lot is indeed incorrect we reserve the right to require the purchaser to obtain, at the purchaser's expense, the opinion of two experts in the field, mutually acceptable to Julien's and the purchaser, before we agree to rescind the sale under the warranty. This warranty is not assignable and applies only to the original purchaser on record with Julien's. This warranty does not transfer to any subsequent owners of any purchased property (this includes without limitation, heirs, successors, beneficiaries or assigns).

Should a sale be rescinded and the purchase price paid (final successful bid price, plus the buyer's premium), it is specifically understood that this will be considered the sole remedy. It is exclusive and in lieu of any other remedy available as a matter of law, or in equity.

Exclusions will be made and this warranty does not apply to "Attribution" which on the date of sale was in accordance with the then generally accepted opinion of scholars and specialists, or the identification of periods or dates of execution which may be proven inaccurate by means of scientific processes not generally accepted for use until after publication of the catalogue or listing online, or which were unreasonably expensive or impractical to employ.

JACKSON FIVE TELEVISION SERIES COSTUMES

A group of costumes worn on the Jacksons' CBS television series during episodes five and 12 that aired in January and March of 1977. The garments include Michael Jackson's two-piece bodysuit top and pants made from silver lame, black polyester, and red spandex, all heavily embellished with sequins, prong set rhinestones, and mirrors. Together with complementary two-piece costumes created for Jackie, Marlon, Tito, and Randy Jackson. In addition is a pair of coordinating red spandex pants that have been modified with gold hanging sequin pieces. (not shown).

MICHAEL JACKSON 1973 OSCAR PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLE

A red synthetic blend tunic with back zipper closure, accented with large grommets, round and star studs. Together with black synthetic blend, tab front flared trousers featuring a row of round studs down the outside seam of each leg. Both pieces feature labels from Cotroneo Costume of Hollywood with "Mike" typed onto each label. Michael Jackson's first solo number one hit, "Ben," the title song from the 1972 film by the same name, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Jackson wore this ensemble as he performed the song at the 45th Annual Academy Awards ceremony in 1973.

MICHAEL JACKSON SIGNED CAPTAIN EO SHIRT

A white spandex shirt featuring ribbed neck, zip closure at back of neck, and a rainbow motif. The shirt is signed in red marker "Love Michael Jackson." Jackson wore this shirt as he portrayed Captain EO in the 3-D film of the same name, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and shown at Disney theme parks in the 1980s and 1990s.

MICHAEL JACKSON FANTASY GLOVE

A white spandex right-hand glove covered in alternating rows of Swarovski crystal loch rosen and square iridescent crystals on the back of the glove. The glove additionally features a round design centering on five large rectangular crystals and two rows of prong set rhinestones at wrist. The palm of the glove is covered in loch rosen crystals of various sizes. This is one of the gloves created by Bill Whitten for Michael Jackson in the early 1980s that were known as the "Fantasy gloves" as they were alternative in color and design to Jackson's signature white crystal glove. An image of the glove is featured on page 36 of The King of Style by Michael Bush.

MICHAEL JACKSON WHITE HOUSE JACKET

A black cashmere hussars jacket with red armband and cuffs. The front of the jacket is covered in black braided rope and additionally accenting the cuffs, collar, and back of the jacket. The front of the jacket has a long row of black, crown over eagle buttons, and the collar features black metal crowns over red fabric. The front of the jacket has an added rhinestone brooch, signed "B&W" for designers Butler and Wilson. The interior of the jacket features Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush labels. Michael Jackson wore this jacket as he visited the White House in 1990, when he was honored as Entertainer of the Decade by then President George H.W. Bush.  

MICHAEL JACKSON "WE ARE THE WORLD" REHEARSAL JACKET

A tropical weight wool military style jacket with patch featuring lions flanking a "J" at right chest. Michael Jackson wore this jacket during rehearsals before the filming of “We Are the World."

MICHAEL JACKSON BAD TOUR SHIRT

A silver spandex shirt with zip front closure, three silver buttons at chest, buckled black leather straps on both arms, tuck strap with snap closure, and silver tone metal "Special Officer" badges at each shoulder. Interior Dennis Tompkins & Michael Bush label. Michael Jackson wore this shirt as he performed on stage during the 1987-1989 Bad World Tour.    

MICHAEL JACKSON BAD TOUR BELT

A black leather, silver studded belt that extends down the right leg with additional buckled straps. The belt is marked on the interior in silver marker "2 of 2 Tompkins/Bush 1987" and signed in silver marker by Michael Jackson "Love Michael Jackson." The belt was created for the opening leg of Jackson's 1987-1989 Bad World Tour.    

MICHAEL JACKSON SIGNED AND WORN JACKET

A black patent leather motorcycle style jacket with zip front closure, zip cuffs, and matching belt at waist. The jacket is heavily embellished with a large embroidered Prussian eagle with central "M" crest on back and additional patches reading "Unique" and "MJ" and an eagle holding an "M." The jacket also features a red patent leather stripe on left arm and a silver embroidered armband on right arm. Interior features Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush labels and is signed in white marker "Love Michael Jackson." Jackson was photographed wearing this jacket with Flavor Flav while attending an event in the 1980s.

MICHAEL JACKSON BAD TOUR "THRILLER" JACKET

A red leather jacket with black leather detailing and no front closure. The jacket additionally features battery-powered illumination panels throughout. The interior lining is zipped into place, giving access to the extensive wiring system on the interior of the jacket. Bill Whitten designed this jacket for Michael Jackson to wear as he performed "Thriller" during the Asian leg of his 1987-1989 Bad World Tour. This jacket is discussed and illustrated on pages 76-77 and 82 of The King of Style by Michael Bush.

A red and yellow varsity style jacket with wool body and leather sleeves with knit cuffs, collar, and waistband. The jacket features a large "M" at chest and was worn by Michael Jackson as he transformed into a werewolf while performing "Thriller" live on stage during the 1987-1989 Bad World Tour. The left sleeve of the jacket is signed in red marker "Love Michael Jackson."    

MICHAEL JACKSON BAD TOUR JACKET

A black stretch gabardine, zip front jacket, heavily embellished with additional zippers at chest, five buckled leather straps on each cuff, buckled leather strap at waist, special officer badges at each shoulder, sterling silver rank markers at shoulders and collar, and silver metal studs on epaulets. The jacket is further embellished with two large bandolier style leather straps covered in special officer badges. Interior label reads "Dennis Tompkins & Michael Bush." Michael Jackson wore this jacket on stage during the Asian leg of the 1987-1989 Bad World Tour. Four jackets were made in this style for the tour. One jacket was made in leather, and the subsequent three jackets were made of black stretch gabardine.  

MICHAEL JACKSON ICONOGRAPH OF "BAD" JACKET

An "Iconograph" of Michael Jackson’s “Bad” jacket by artist Deborah Morales (American, B. 1962). The one-of-a-kind, 18 gauge stainless steel artwork is hand-grinded, buffed and polished to bring out the energy of the subject matter. It is then overlaid with Iconograpic Art. This Iconograph features Michael Jackson’s “Bad” jacket with raised police badges to give a three dimensional element to the piece.   36 by 28 inches

MICHAEL JACKSON "DIRTY DIANA" VIDEO WORN SHIRT AND GLOVE

A sheer white French voile button front long-sleeve shirt. Together with a black spandex, right forearm glove with 10 decorative buckles and three buttons at wrist. This shirt and glove were created for and worn by Michael Jackson as he performed the song "Dirty Diana" during the shoot for his music video directed by Joe Pytka. Michael Bush recalls that Jackson had requested a black leather jacket to wear during the shoot for the video but once on set felt it was too heavy and didn't move enough. Michael Bush had been wearing this light French voile shirt, and Jackson said, "Bush, your shirt is winking at me." Bush gave Jackson the shirt off his back, and that became the look for Jackson's future performances of "Dirty Diana." The full story and an image of this shirt are featured on page 61 of The King of Style by Michael Bush.

MICHAEL JACKSON MILITARY COSTUME

A black wool jacket with tails, featuring extensive gold bullion embroidery, red collar, cuffs and epaulets. Together with a pair of black wool pants with gold accented outer leg seams and interior label from Bermans and Nathans costumers of London. Michael Jackson wore this costume during a 1989 Vanity Fair shoot with photographer Annie Leibovitz for a cover article featuring Jackson. Together with a copy of the magazine featuring an autograph by Jackson in black marker reading "Thanks Bush Love Michael Jackson."

MICHAEL JACKSON L.A. GEAR PHOTOSHOOT JACKET

A 1950s vintage leather cowhide motorcycle jacket customized with metal license plate style plaques. The jacket was created by Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush for Michael Jackson to wear during a photoshoot for L.A. Gear as well as other public appearances. The jacket is illustrated on page 102 of The King of Style by Michael Bush.

MICHAEL JACKSON ACADEMY AWARDS JACKET

A cream wool suit jacket completely covered in white vermicelli beading, with faux pearl covered lapel and armband in square black Swarovski crystals. Interior of the jacket contains Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush labels. Michael Jackson wore this jacket as he escorted Madonna to the 63rd Annual Academy Awards in 1991. Madonna performed the song "Sooner or Later" from the film Dick Tracy (Touchstone, 1990), which won the Oscar for Best Original Song that year. The jacket is discussed on pages 7-9 of The King of Style by Michael Bush. The jacket is additionally illustrated on page 9.  

MICHAEL JACKSON OFFICER BADGES

A group of nine badges of varying design and origin for "Special Officer," "Security," "Police Captain," and "Security Officer." This is a representational group of the many badges incorporated into Michael Jackson's clothing throughout the years.

A black leather jacket with front zip closure, completely covered in vermicelli bugle beading with colorful red, yellow, orange, and blue beaded flame embellishment. No interior labels, unlined. The jacket can be seen in the background of the Tompkins and Bush studio on page 171 of The King of Style by Michael Bush.

MICHAEL JACKSON SIGNED COSTUME SKETCH

MICHAEL JACKSON SIGNED CRYSTAL GLOVE IN PROGRESS

A piece of white stretch fabric with hand-sewn Swarovski crystal loch rosen, in the process of becoming one of Michael Jackson's gloves. The work-in-progress glove offers a unique look into the process of creating one of Jackson's iconic gloves. The hand beading takes more than 72 hours to complete. The components are then cut and hand sewn. The fabric is signed in black marker "To Bush Love Michael Jackson." This process is described in detail on pages 32 and 33 of The King of Style by Michael Bush.27 by 20 1/4 inches

MICHAEL JACKSON CRYSTAL GLOVE

A white cotton right-hand glove with snap closure at wrist and interior label reading "Dennis Tompkins & Michael Bush." The glove is completely covered in hand-sewn Swarovski loch rosen crystals of various sizes. The glove was created for Michael Jackson by his longtime costumers. The making of these gloves is explained in great detail in The King of Style by Michael Bush.

MICHAEL JACKSON "V-8" JACKET

A black leather, zip front jacket with silver piping detail and large silver tone metal badges down the front of the jacket. Each badge features an interlinking "V" and "8" and was known as the "V-8" jacket. Interior of the jacket features Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush labels. Michael Jackson wore this jacket during a photoshoot with photographer Jonathan Exley which produced the image used on the back cover of his Dangerous World Tour souvenir program. A copy of the program is included with this lot.

MICHAEL JACKSON DANGEROUS TOUR JACKET

A black wool blend jacket with faux front zipper and Velcro, quick-change, front closure. The jacket is heavily embellished with gold tone metal police shields at each shoulder, a metal armband on right arm, and metal embellishment at collar. Additionally adorned with molded plastic belt in the style of an ammunition belt and individually sewn, overlapping plates in the style of bandoliers. The right sleeve of the jacket is hemmed considerably shorter than the left to allow Michael Jackson's signature laced armband to remain visible. The interior of the jacket features Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush labels. The jacket was worn by Jackson on stage throughout his 1992-1993 Dangerous World Tour. The jacket was subsequently used as the basis for the monumental statue of Jackson that featured prominently in the teaser film created to promote his 1995 HIStory album. This statue was additionally used in the cover artwork for the album and HIStory Tour program. This is one of two identical jackets created for Jackson's use throughout the Dangerous Tour.    

MICHAEL JACKSON DANGEROUS TOUR COSTUME

A gold and black spandex leotard with front zip closure and D-ring buckle at back. The front zip closure does not run the entire length of the garment, allowing the front to lay open and move, which Michael Jackson felt created movement as he danced. Together with a pair of black pants with decorative snap sockets at hip area and a Dennis Tompkins & Michael Bush label. Jackson wore this ensemble during his 1992-1993 Dangerous World Tour. The design of this signature look from the Dangerous Tour was inspired by European fencing uniforms.    

MICHAEL JACKSON DANGEROUS TOUR "THRILLER" JACKET

A DayGlo painted leather jacket created by Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush for Michael Jackson to wear as he performed "Thriller" under black lights during the 1992-1993 Dangerous World Tour.  

MICHAEL JACKSON DANGEROUS TOUR "BEAT IT" JACKET

A red fish skin, zipper front jacket further embellished with additional black zippers and silver lame shoulder panels completely covered in Swarovski loch rosen crystals. Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush created this jacket for Michael Jackson to wear as he performed "Beat It" during his 1992-1993 Dangerous World Tour. This jacket is discussed in The King of Style by Michael Bush, and an image of the jacket is featured on page 97.  

MICHAEL JACKSON "SMILE" COSTUMES

A three-piece costume including a cotton button front shirt, black wool tuxedo jacket with tails, and a pair of wool, twill weave trousers with white stretch suspenders and a pair of distressed leather boots. The clothing is all intentionally oversized and distressed to help create Michael Jackson's homage to Charlie Chaplin's most famous character, the tramp. Jackson wore this costume during the 1994 shoot for the cover of his single "Smile." Jackson approached photographer Steve Whitsitt about what he wanted for the cover, explaining he wished to portray Charlie Chaplin and Jackie Coogan from Chaplin's film The Kid . The boots were created for the shoot but do not appear in the final images used for the cover of the single. The costume is sold together with a group of costume items worn by "the kid" to Jackson's Chaplin character. Pieces include two nearly identical sweaters, a pair of brown wool trousers with suspenders, white cotton socks, a page boy cap, and a pair of leather boots. Michael Bush recalls that Jackson handed both him and photographer Steve Whitsitt an image of Chaplin from the film and told them he wanted to create that same image.    

MICHAEL JACKSON HISTORY TEASER FILM JACKET

A black wool jacket with zip and Velcro front closures. The jacket is heavily embellished with silver studs, braided metal epaulets, large silver tone metal badges at shoulders, metal plates over collar, white fabric armband with "777" in black, and large metal bars across front of jacket. The right arm of the jacket is hemmed considerably shorter than the left arm to allow Michael Jackson's signature laced armband to remain visible. The jacket also features a leather over elastic belt that is attached to a pair of black denim pants. Together with a pair of custom tailored black Levi 501 jeans with striped ribbon running along the outside seam of each leg, interior label reading Dennis Tompkins & Michael Bush. This is one of two jackets created for Jackson's use during the filming of the teaser film created to promote the release of Jackson's 1995 album HIStory . The jackets are nearly identical in appearance, but this jacket was worn during the distance shots of Jackson rather than the close-up shots.  

MICHAEL JACKSON "SCREAM" SHIRT

A black synthetic blend long-sleeve shirt with back zip closure and white "7" added to chest. The shirt is marked on interior in gold marker "2/2" indicating that two identical costumes were created for Michael Jackson's use during the "Scream" video shoot.

MICHAEL JACKSON HISTORY TOUR "BEAT IT" JACKET

A red Neoprene vinyl “Beat It” jacket created by Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush for Michael Jackson to wear during the 1996-1997 HIStory World Tour. The jacket is illustrated on page 97 of The King of Style by Michael Bush.  

MICHAEL JACKSON HISTORY TOUR COSTUME

A gold and silver mirror finish spandex top with Velcro, quick-change, front closure, black piping and round gold tone metal buttons together with a pair of matching gold spandex trousers. Each piece features a Dennis Tompkins & Michael Bush label. This outfit was worn by Michael Jackson during the opening of his 1996-1997 HIStory World Tour. The concept behind and creation of this costume is discussed in great detail on pages 148-151 of The King of Style by Michael Bush.  

MICHAEL JACKSON PHOTOSHOOT ENSEMBLE

An intentionally distressed ensemble created for a shoot with photographer Jonathan Exley in Chicago. The ensemble includes a Beckaro thermal shirt, Studio Tokyo plaid button front long-sleeve shirt, and OshKosh denim overalls worn together with distressed white tights. The shirts created as options for the shoot are similar to those which appeared in the final approved photographs.

Best ski touring pant I've ever used!

For ski touring I love everything about these pants. The cut, the color options, and the thoughtful details (the dedicated suspender attachment points, the red zipper on the beacon pocket, and the crampon guards to name a few) make me happy to recommend them.

Top notch snow pants

I love these softshell hybrid pants. They are fantastic in the snow and fit better and more comfortably than most I've tried. I'm 6' and 190# (33" waist) and the Medium is perfect. I would imagine anyone with a shorter inseam would find these long and perhaps baggy. Too bad there aren't length options. They work great for winter hiking/snowshoeing/shoveling the driveway/snow play w the doggo. Layer great with long johns. They seem like an excellent fit for touring, especially with the good breathability, stretch, and generous venting option with the side zippers, but I haven't yet got out this season. Waterproof and reinforced lowers a nice feature, especially when... breaking trail. With ski boots I'm pretty sure I could get away with a shorter length even at 6' / 32" inseam, but then they would be a bit short the rest of the time. Most snow pants bunch up with a bit of a baggy look over ski boots anyway. Would buy again.

Nice touring pants

I've taken these out on a couple of tours, and so far they are holding up to the abuse. They're comfortable, they stretch, and I like the pockets and easy to use vent zippers.

These snow pants are awesome!

First time out with these and I skied up to Bow hut and back. They were so comfortable. They kept my legs at just the right temperature both up hill and down. The vents down the backs of the legs were perfect for keeping the cold wind off my thighs. These are coming on all my ski treks!

Great idea, terrible fit

I love the pockets on these pants, the generous vents, and although I think it completely unnecessary, the waterproof lower leg is a cool idea. That being said, the fit of these is terrible. I'm 6'1, 160#s and I've always been a medium in pants, but when I got these, I felt like I was a kid wearing my dad's pants. How can you bill a pair of pants as for ski mountaineering and make them so baggy? I'm a ski guide and thought these could be the ideal pants, but I'll definitely be returning these and looking for something else. OR, please stop making lifestyle apparel for weekend warriors and go back to making functional outerwear for outdoor professionals.

Perplexed with the sizing (non use review)

I can't speak to the use of these pants, so this review is only related to sizing... I really love the concept of these pants, which is why I decided to purchase them... Goretex in the Canadian Rockies isn't always the best choice, so a Soft-Shell option is usually preferred. Upon receiving them, I'm slightly perplexed with the sizing (OR's sizing has been an issue for me for a while now - it's changed over the last several years, and not for the better)... I am an outdoor professional (summer and winter) and during the winter I teach Avalanche Safety courses (so I stand around a lot between traveling to and from the course locations). When I teach, I tend to double up my base layer with a thicker polypro layer of pants. My current Arc'teryx (Goretex Pro) Ski Guide pants seem to fit well in the thighs and crotch when layering this way, but the OR Trail Breaker Tour Pants are definitely tighter. They fit well with 1 layer so maybe it's a just a issue specific to my situation... I may try going up to a Large - if the length remains the same (I'm typically a medium [tops and bottoms] with all my outdoor clothing) and see if those feel better or if I'll be swimming in them.

Tested skiing Denali, a perfectly versatile touring pant

I am an Outdoor Research employee and had the opportunity to wear test these pants on a Denali climbing/skiing expedition this spring. Choosing a single pant for a 2-week trip, versatility is arguably the most important part, and these lived up to every expectation. The soft-shell upper fabric is very breathable and dried out very quickly when wearing every single day while still providing plenty of water resistance. The waterproof lower leg fabric was perfect when trudging through snow after storms and added some great protection once we transitioned to climbing during rope work and while setting anchors. The angle of the pockets made them really easy to open when wearing a climbing harness and the lower leg pockets make it quick to stash items without even needing to touch your harness. After a two-week expedition wearing these pants every day, for everything, they are still in amazing condition. I plan on wearing the same pair this coming winter.

SMILE No matter where you are, no matter who you are with and no matter what you are doing... it is just instant. For years mine has always been: Wanna Be Startin' Something I can be miles away - thinking/walking/working/whatever - and when I hear those first few drum beats.. I immediately smile a big goofy grin and I can't help it! What yours?  

I think for me, it's The Way You Make Me Feel...The beat and melody are SO infectious...It's such a great, feel-good song...Actually, Streetwalker kinda does the same thing to me....  

Prince - I Would Die 4 U A couple of Michael songs: P.Y.T. Remember The Time She Drives Me Wild (can't even sit still to that beat) Rock With You The Love You Save Those type of songs, even though I mostly just teared up to Rock With You just after he passed.  

Probably Beat It. The beat is amazing and it always has been a song I've loved since I was little. Every time I hear it, I get up and have a huge smile on my face and dance like crazy. Beat It makes me go crazy and I could NEVER tire of that song. It's a classic. Don't Stop Til You Get Enough would be another. I can't help but dance like a weirdo whenever I hear this song too. lol. And Michael's vocals. Oh, I love his falsetto. :wub:

I would say DSTYGE Rock With You Human Nature (my favorite song ever) and well Smile of course because it reminds me I should smile more, but it also makes me sad at the same time.

Man In The Mirror, because it is his theme song. He was always about trying to change our world and helping others. Also like BAD because he is just so darn hot in that video. Billy Jean because it has such an awesome beat and it was when MJ first did his moonwalk Actually I like all his songs accept Morphine and that is just cause it is so awfully sad to think that he was struggling and no one helped him.

Masters 2024: In defense of Jason Day's pants

AUGUSTA, Ga.,—Automatic acridity toward anything different is what you might expect on social media, but under the Big Tree at Augusta National words are chosen more carefully. Many golf agents and business leaders were reluctant to assign a dollar value to a Thursday afternoon tee time alongside Tiger Woods, but nodded knowingly. Some wizened green jackets recalled the roomy, high-waisted silhouettes of favorite past champions like Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan and Claude Harmon, not that these members concerned themselves with the inevitable cycles of fashion anyway.

Which is to say, steps from the Augusta National clubhouse, the conversation about Jason Day’s Nylon Mesh Basket Pant by Malbon Golf, with adjustable ankle drawcords and elastic waist with belt loops, did not match the outcry of the rest of the world .

Not that having clubhouse access makes a person right, but it’s worth noting the muted reaction of the game’s cognoscenti to Day’s billowing, wrinkled trousers. Sort of like rain pants but not quite, their nylon material wasn’t a terrible choice for a day that saw a range of temperature and humidity following a weather delay.

Obviously, there’s some congruity in two career, non-white Nike ambassadors making the Masters debut of their respective new duds together (Tiger Woods introduced his own line, Sun Day Red, this past February in his only other tournament start of 2024; Jason Day’s Malbon deal was announced in January). Both golfers are at a stage in life where they’re interested, as well as invested, in having a style not shared by seemingly every other player on tour.

At the personal driving range outside his home at Double Eagle Club in Ohio, Day likes to practice in oversize sweatpants and a T-shirt. It’s what he’s comfortable in, especially for longer sessions. There’s a logic in transferring a similar feel, upped in elegance with some buttons and a collar.

I profess to be no style expert, or even enthusiast. But as of late, I’ve dipped a toe in this world. Next week, Golf Digest will unveil its first ever fully devoted Style Issue . In editing this collection of stories and speaking with many pro golfers who are sartorially conscious, I’ve been inspired how attention to detail is an element that pervades their lives. While you don’t need to look good to play good, perhaps there’s a correlation. Jason Day led the field in driving distance for round one with a staggering average of 328 yards, just nipping the 6'8" amateur Christo Lamprecht, whose tailor plays a different sport.

If you loathe the bagginess of Jason Day’s pants, read “ Tailored Tiger ” from our upcoming special issue in which Marty Hackel—a.k.a “Mr. Style,” who served as Golf Digest fashion director for 15 years—tracks the clothing evolution of our generation’s greatest player. You’ll appreciate that young Tiger started his amateur career in large articles because he was wearing hand-me-downs from his father, Earl, yet managed to put it all together with a unique swagger during those six consecutive USGA wins.

For any pro, there’ll usually be a line between what they’re obligated to wear and what they’d choose to wear for themselves. Jason Day's Friday vest is another story. Say what you will, but this Masters, Tiger Woods and Jason Day aren’t dressed exactly like each other.

Hoodies, joggers, flat brim caps, baggy pants—all these things that shock eventually make their way into fancy pro shops. Let’s applaud some individuality when and while we can.
