Jason Manford

The cowardly lion manchester only.

Jason Manford hails from Salford, Lancashire. He is a stand-up comedian, writer, actor, radio and television presenter. He began his career in 1999, while working at the Buzz Comedy Club in Chorlton, Manchester. Jason was collecting glasses when a performer didn’t arrive for an evening set. Jason, who was 17, stepped in to fill the gap, an event which marked the beginning of his comedy career. Six gigs later he was crowned The City Life North West Comedian of the Year.

After winning several smaller awards, Jason was nominated for the Perrier Award in Edinburgh in 2005 for his show  Urban Legends . He shot to stardom as team Captain on Channel 4’s,  8 out of 10 Cats  in 2007.

Following his UK tours in 2008 and 2009, stand up sets on  Live at the Apollo  (BBC One),  Michael  McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow  (BBC One) and  The Royal Variety Performance  (ITV1, 2009) have all helped establish Jason as a nationally known comic, a position which made him the ideal host of ITV’s reality comedy competition,  Show Me The Funny .

A second series of his hilarious creation  Walk on the Wild Side  (BBC One) aired in 2010. Jason has also hosted  Comedy Rocks with Jason Manford  (ITV1). He was a regular panellist on two series of  Odd One In  (ITV1).

Jason took his  I’m Turning Into My Dad  tour across the UK in 2010, including a five night run at the Edinburgh International Festival that summer. He then went back on tour in 2011 with  Off On Tour We Go: Jason Manford Live .

After his opera singing turn saw him emerge the winner on  Born To Shine  (ITV1) Jason put his new found talent into practice joining Alfie Boe on tour. This was followed by a well-received run in the critically acclaimed hit West End musical  Sweeney Todd , starring Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton. He hosted ITV’s  Funny Old Year  on New Year’s Eve 2013, giving his unique and personal take on everything from television to sport, from the gaffes to the feuds and the trends of the year. Jason toured the UK with his  First World Problems  show which took him to all corners of the British Isles which started in May 2013, performing more than a staggering 200 shows.  First World Problems  was released on DVD in November 2014 and the tour finished in December 2014.

In April 2014 Jason appeared alongside  Shameless  star David Threlfall in ITV1’s drama based on the life of Tommy Cooper,  Not Like This, Like That . Jason hosted a brand new series on BBC One,  A  Question of Sport: Super  Saturday throughout June 2014. In September 2014, the  illustrious Sunday  Night at the Palladium  returned to ITV and saw Jason as one of the guest hosts. He has also enjoyed appearances on  QI  (BBC Two),  Big Fat Quiz of the Year  (Channel 4),  Comedy World Cup  (Channel 4) and  Lip Sync Battle UK  (Channel 5).

Jason starred in  The Producers  as timid accountant, Leo Bloom. The show is based on Mel Brooks’ beloved Academy Award winning movie. The hilarious musical comedy which has taken Broadway and the West End by storm, opened in March 2015.

In March and April 2015, Jason starred in the BBC One six part drama series  Ordinary Lies  with co-stars Max Beesley, Michelle Keegan and Mackenzie Crook. For his role as downtrodden car salesman Marty, he was nominated for ‘Best Actor’ at the Royal Television Society Awards.

Following three successful end of year specials of  Funny Old Year , Jason went on to host  Funny Old Week  for ITV throughout July 2015.

Jason then hosted  The Money Pit  on Dave (UKTV), where ordinary people decide whether or not to invest their own money on a variety of projects on the show in return for a share in the company or a special reward.

In July to November 2015, his  Best Of  live show toured the UK. Jason wrote a comedy-horror show called  That’s The Spirit  for Sky1, which aired Halloween 2016. He starred in this alongside Rebecca Callard, Imogen Gurney and Brenock O’Connor.

Jason took to the stage in February 2016 to star as Caractacus Potts in the UK critically acclaimed tour of  Chitty Chitty Bang Bang  for a 12 month run.

Jason hosts a live three hour show on Absolute Radio on Sunday mornings with celebrity guests and his own comedic take on the topics of the week. His show receives huge ratings and is very popular with audiences across the UK. In 2017, Jason was nominated for Best Music Presenter at the ARIAS, run by The Radio Academy. In 2018, Jason was nominated in the Funniest Show category at the ARIAS. The show holds the Sunday morning record for pulling in the most listeners in that slot since Absolute was launched in 2001.

2017 was non-stop for Jason. After finishing  Chitty  in February, he went straight into hosting a brand new Sunday night primetime TV game show called  Bigheads . The series began April 2017 on ITV1 and ran for six weeks. April also saw Jason present the prestigious Olivier Awards (ITV1), before jumping into hosting duties for week seven of  The Nightly Show  (ITV1). He also made a guest appearance in the new series of  Benidorm  (ITV1). In September that year,  Bigheads  won Best TV Game Show at the prestigious Rose d’Or Awards in Berlin. Jason was nominated for Best Entertainment Presenter for  Bigheads  at the National Television Awards, while the show itself was nominated for The Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award.

In October 2017, Jason released his debut album of musical favourites  A Different Stage  on Decca Records. The record ranges from show tunes he has performed in the past, to songs that are close to his heart and some of his childhood favourites. The album reached the Top 10 in the UK.

In January 2018 Jason took to the road for his mammoth year-and-a-half long  Muddle Class  UK tour, which explored Jason’s life growing up ‘working class’, then finding that as he’s got older, part of him has become ‘middle class’, causing much confusion!

In October 2018, Jason trod the boards once again, this time as Nathan Detroit in  Guys and Dolls  at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Towards the end of 2018, Jason filmed the Christmas special of his prime time ITV1 show,  What Would Your Kid Do?  and a second series, which aired in March 2019. The series set the challenge for parents to guess how their kids will react in a variety of different situations, as child development psychology merges with an entertaining game show.

December saw the release of a special Christmas episode of Jason’s Cartoonito children’s show  Daisy & Ollie , which saw a special guest appearance from Take That’s Gary Barlow performing a song.  Daisy & Ollie  is now shown every weekday morning on Channel 5’s Milkshake.

2019 saw the continuation of Jason’s hugely successful  Muddle Class  UK tour, and later in the year star in  Scarborough , a BBC One sitcom written by Benidorm creator Derren Litten.

May 2019 saw Manford’s Comedy Club take over Blackpool with his first ever ‘Manford’s Comedy Festival’ in partnership with Winter Gardens and Absolute Radio. The festival line-up included big comedy names such as John Bishop, Sean Lock, Milton Jones, David O’Doherty and more.

In September 2019, Jason returned to musical theatre to star in the hilarious whodunnit  Curtains  as Frank Cioffi, which toured the UK and included a month-long run at the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre.

January 2020 saw Jason host a brand-new, primetime comedy gameshow for BBC One,  First & Last . In February, Jason claimed second place as ‘Hedgehog’ in the first series of ITV1’s  The Masked Singer .

During the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, Jason hosted a number of events from his home to keep the nation entertained whilst being stuck indoors during the lockdown. These included a weekly Friday night gameshow ‘Jason Manford’s Games Arcade’, a kids quiz every Wednesday afternoon with questions thought up by his own children and also a ‘Lockdown Comedy Club for Kids’, where Jason invited children all over the UK to send in their own jokes to be shared on his YouTube channel.

In June 2020, Jason’s  Muddle Class  show recorded at Stockport Plaza was shown on BBC One.

In January 2021, Jason guest starred as character Craig in BBC One’s  Death In Paradise .

In May, Jason’s brand-new quiz show  Unbeatable  launched on BBC One, running for 50 episodes. In the same month, Jason’s Absolute Radio show won the bronze Comedy Award at the 2021 Audio and Radio Industry Awards.

In September 2021, Jason kicked off his brand-new stand-up show  Like Me  – a massive 280+ date UK & Ireland tour, culminating in November 2022. In October, the tour saw Jason play at the prestigious London Palladium.

January 2022 saw Jason host BBC One’s ‘Big Night of Musicals’ at Manchester’s AO Arena. In February 2022, Jason joined the judging panel of ITV’s new Saturday night prime time entertainment show,  Starstruck . The same month also saw Jason return to  The Masked Singer  as Hedgehog, where he performed a duet in the final with winner Natalie Imbruglia.

In April Jason hosted the ‘Olivier Awards’ at London’s Royal Albert Hall. He previously hosted the UK’s most prestigious stage honours in 2017, 2019 and 2020.

In November 2022 Jason co-hosted this year’s  Children in Need  on BBC One alongside Ade Adepitan, Alex Scott, Mel Giedroyc and Chris Ramsay live from Media City, Salford.

Jason headed out into the fresh air with friend, former cricketer and broadcaster Freddie Flintoff on an unforgettable wild adventure in the depths of Snowdonia to film a one off special,  Two Men and a Tent  for ITV.

Also, in November 2022 Jason also released a charity single ‘Assembly Bangers’ on the Westway Red Label. This brilliantly nostalgic dance track based on the ‘hits’ that have been sung in school assemblies for many decades to raise funds and awareness for the Trussell Trust’s first ever large-scale emergency appeal to ensure food banks can keep going this winter.

In December Jason made his Panto debut leading the cast in  The Pantomime Adventures of Peter  Pan  in the role of Captain Hook at the Manchester Opera House.

Following the success of Jason’s charity single ‘Assembly Bangers’ released to raise funds and awareness for the Trussell Trust’s first ever large-scale emergency appeal to ensure that food banks can keep going this winter, Jason released ‘Assembly Bangers: The Album’ on Westway Music Label.

Also, in December 2022 Jason joined the panel of judges on ITV1’s  Britain Get Singing  including Will.i.am, Alesha Dixon and Adam Lambert. This festive show supports ITV’s groundbreaking mental health campaign Britain Get Talking.

On New Year’s Eve Jason co-hosted the  National Lottery’s   Big Bash  from the OVO Arena Wembley on ITV1.

In what spare time he has, Jason runs Manford’s Comedy Club with his brother Colin. Since the launch over four years ago, Manford’s Comedy Club has gone from strength to strength and have booked over 300 comedians to entertain more than 80,000 people in 70 different locations across the country. From Holiday Parks to Art Centres and from bustling City Centre Nightclubs to quiet out of town theatres, Manford’s Comedy Club has delivered a lot of laughs to a lot of people.

Jason supports Manchester City FC and has a season ticket with his dad and three brothers. He cites Billy Connolly as the first comedian he saw when he was nine years old, and as the first inspiration for him to become a comedian. He has a love for family friendly entertainers including Eric Morecambe, Tommy Cooper and Les Dawson.

Aston Merrygold

The tin man at selected dates.

Known for his incredible stage presence during his time with X Factor formed band JLS, it is not surprising that the band has gone on to sell out countless arena tours and sell over 10 million records, including five Number 1 hits and numerous awards. Whilst the band took a seven year break, Aston made strides in his career appearing on the West End, Strictly Come Dancing and released his platinum debut single ‘Get Stupid’ and most recently ‘Overboard’ and ‘Share a Coke’. JLS made their comeback last year and performed to sold out arenas all over the UK and Ireland.

Alongside pursuing his musical ambitions and being a husband and father to his two sons, Aston has continued to remain at the forefront of entertainment, becoming a judge on the Sky 1 talent show, Got To Dance . He was also unmasked as Robin in the Semi Finals for the 2020/2021 series of Masked Singer UK and joined the cast of CBBC’s comedy drama, Almost Never , playing Jordan, the new manager of ‘The Wonderland’. Allan Stewart

The wizard at selected dates.

Allan started his career at the age of 10 in the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow. He appeared in clubs and theatres during his school days, and at the age of 16 wrote and recorded his first single at the Abbey Road studios, with the legendary Beetles producer, George Martin.

His voice broke and when he came back into the business two albums and the hit single “Opening Night” followed. Although he was initially known as a singer he was seduced by the sound of laughter and turned his attention to comedy and television. He starred in many series for STV including “Hello, Good Evening, Welcome,” “The Allan Stewart Tapes”, and his national television break came in the 80’s with the hugely successful series “Copy Cats”. “Live from the Palladium,” “Night of a 1000 Stars” and many other high profile TV guest spots filled his diary.  He hosted his own quiz show “Chain Letters” and appeared in two Royal Variety performances.

He played the lead in the original musical of Jolson’s life at London’s Victoria Palace, and in The Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto. He toured in the hit play “Stones in his Pockets” and played the part of Roger De Bris in the Mel Brooks musical “The Producers”. This year he headlines his 27th consecutive pantomime in Edinburgh. Allan is very excited to be touring in this wonderful new production of The Wizard of Oz.

Arts | capitol police investigate verbal threat as ct legislators continue debating, arts | the wizard of ‘wicked’ returns to ct after thousands of performances in the broadway hit musical.

The cast of the national tour of "Wicked," coming to Hartford for a nearly three-week run April 24 through May 12. (Joan Marcus)

Tom McGowan has played the Wizard in “Wicked” well over two thousand times, but the Yale School of Drama graduate, whose acting career spans Shakespeare, musicals, sitcoms and movies, never tires of hiding behind the curtain.

McGowan keeps the magical humbug role fresh by gauging it against the varying personalities of his co-stars.

“I try to adjust to who’s playing Elphaba,” said McGowan, who is with the “Wicked” tour that’s coming back to The Bushnell for a three-week run from April 24 through May 12. “That’s one of the reasons I haven’t gotten bored all these years. Elphaba is one of the great roles in history and one of the trickiest.”

For most of the Hartford run, Elphaba will be played by Olivia Valli, last seen at The Bushnell in the first national tour of the musical “Pretty Woman.”

“With her, I’m really focusing on the ‘fatherly’ thing,” McGowan said. “I try to be as fatherly as possible. Although the Wizard is this man behind the curtain who’s not so nice, he’s also new to this and just working it out. I try to keep that in mind.”

Yale graduate Tom McGowan plays the Wizard of "Wicked." (Joan Marcus)

“Wicked” is a prequel of sorts to “The Wizard of Oz,” chronicling the school days of the Wicked Witch of the West (aka Elphaba) and Glinda the Good (currently played by Celia Hottenstein). The musical is based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, the first in his series of books giving an alternate take on the Oz characters created in the early 1900s by L. Frank Baum.

The musical, featuring the hit song “Defying Gravity,” has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz , a longtime Ridgefield resident who has had revivals of many of his musicals done at local theaters such as the Goodspeed Opera House (“Rags”) and ACT of CT (“Snapshots,” “Working,” “Godspell”). “Wicked” has a book by Winnie Holzman and was directed by Joe Mantello.

McGowan got into the Yale School of Drama on his third try. His professional career had an auspicious start when he took over the starring role in the Broadway comedy “La Bête,” the critically acclaimed play by David Hirson written entirely in rhyming couplets and iambic pentameter. Hollywood star Ron Silver had the role but left during the first week of performances. The run was short, but it made McGowan’s name.

He returned to Yale to do three shows at the Yale Repertory Theatre shortly after graduating: The George S. Kaufman comedy “The Solid Gold Cadillac” in 1989, “Daylight in Exile” by James D’Entremont for the Rep’s Winterfest series of new works in early 1990 and the Chekhov drama “Ivanov” (starring William Hurt) in the fall of 1990. Elsewhere in Connecticut, he appeared in readings of new plays at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford for five straight years.

Besides his many times with “Wicked,” he’s visited Connecticut during a national tour of another very long-running Broadway show, “Chicago.” McGowan played Amos Hart, the hapless husband whose anthem is “Mr. Cellophane.” Strangely, both Amos Hart and The Wizard are roles that originated on Broadway with Joel Grey.

The Bushnell announces seven Broadway series shows for 2024-25 season

The long-awaited movie version of “Wicked,” starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, will release the first of its two parts this November. Anticipation for the film has created fresh interest in the musical. McGowan remembers a similar thing happening with “Chicago.”

“People kept asking me, ‘Is the movie going to kill the Broadway show?’ It didn’t. It helped it,” McGowan said.

McGowan has played the Wonderful Wizard of Oz on and off for 16 years. The tour coming to Hartford is called the “Munchkinland” tour to distinguish it from other “Wicked” ensembles happening around the world. McGowan was part of the Munchkinland tour when it first began in 2009.

“I’ve done the tour three different times and filled in another time,” he said.

It has taken him all around the country and to Hawaii. He’s also been in the Broadway cast of “Wicked” twice, in the eighth and 10th years of its now 20-year New York run, and is the only American actor to have played the Wizard in London’s West End.

He’s been with the Munchkinland tour this time for four months. Two weeks ago, he marked his 2,300th performance as the Wizard.

He’s been able to take long breaks from “Wicked” over the years. “I’ve done three other Broadway shows and a lot of TV in that time,” he said, including a key role on the first season of “The Good Fight.” He was able to achieve a personal dream last year when he played Falstaff in Shakespeare’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor” at The Old Globe in San Diego. He was also in the Hallmark Channel movie “One Royal Holiday,” filmed in Connecticut in 2020.

"Wicked" will be undergoing some cast changes while it's in Hartford. (Joan Marcus)

Depending on the age of who recognizes him, he jokes, he’s perhaps known for “Frasier” (playing Kenny Daly on 42 episodes of the sitcom), “Everybody Love Raymond (17 episodes as Bernie Gruenfelder) and the Ben Stiller-starring 1995 Disney comedy “Heavyweights.”

While “Wicked” is in Hartford, the Munchkinland tour will make numerous changes in its cast. Several of the lead roles will have different actors playing them starting May 7, the last week of performances at The Bushnell. From that point, Lauren Samuels will replace Valli Elphaba, Austen Danielle Bohmer (who was an ensemble member in “Bye Bye Birdie” at the Goodspeed Opera House in 2016) will be the new Glinda and Aymee Garcia will play Madame Morrible (taking over from Kathy Fitzgerald). McGowan will pass his Wizard hat to Blake Hammond, whom Bushnell audiences have seen previously in national tours of “Something Rotten,” “The Addams Family” and “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.”

“This is a top-shelf tour,” McGowan said. “They always find these incredible young actresses. They change the principals because they like to keep it fresh. The assistant director comes out to see it at every other city. They’ve kept this show really sharp.”

“Wicked” runs April 24 through May 12 at The Bushnell, 166 Capitol Ave., Hartford. Performances are Tuesdays through Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sundays at 1 and 6:30 p.m. $54-$213. bushnell.org .

Harry potter tour revenue surges past $1 billion.

The Harry Potter tour in Leavesden is a big money spinner for Warner Bros.

Britain's Harry Potter movie tour has generated more than $1 billion of revenue since it opened 12 years ago according to its latest financial statements which show that sales doubled to a record $184.4 million (£149.1 million) in 2022 as the end of pandemic restrictions cast a powerful spell on the attraction.

The tour is set inside two cream-coloured cavernous soundstages at Leavesden Studios on the outskirts of London. Owned by media giant Warner Bros. Discovery WBD , Leavesden was originally an aircraft factory before it was converted into a movie studio in 1994 so that James Bond flick GoldenEye could film there.

Warner bought Leavesden in 2010 making it the first studio to have a permanent European base since Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in the 1940s. Leavesden re-opened in 2012 after Warner invested more than $123.7 million (£100 million) in the site. Since then it has been home to well over 50 productions including all eight Potter films, the three Fantastic Beasts spin-offs and last year's highest-grossing movie, Barbie .

The studio generates 39.7% of Leavesden's total revenue which rose by $87.5 million (£70.7 million) to a record $305.8 million (£247.2 million) in the year to 31 December 2022 as we revealed in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper. The increase was entirely driven by the tour as studio revenue dipped 2.9% to $121.3 million (£98.1 million).

Over the past few years soaring inflation and the cost of living crisis has caused consumers to cut streaming subscriptions leading to studios scaling back the number of shows in production.

It didn't stop there as Leavesden faced the challenge of strikes in Hollywood when actors and writers downed their tools for more than six months last year in a bid to boost the royalties they receive. Warner is still counting the cost of this and on February 23 announced that revenue for the fourth quarter of 2023 was down 7% to $10.2 billion partly driven by strike-induced production delays. On the day of the announcement its shares closed 10% down at $8.61, almost the lowest price since the group was created by the merger of AT&T’s T WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc in April 2022.

The impact is being felt far beyond the studios as special effects firm Framestore, which created the spellbinding visuals in the Potter movies, said it expects margins "to be impacted" by the strikes in 2023.

In contrast, the tour behind the scenes of the Potter movies has been a dream ticket for Warner. Leavesden's net profit more than doubled last year to $87.8 million (£71 million) which was largely driven by the tour given that the studio's revenue reversed. Since 2012 Leavesden has generated total net profits of $589.6 million (£476.7 million) and paid $289.4 million (£234 million) of dividends to Warner.

Since it opened 12 years ago more than 18 million people have streamed through the tour's turnstiles generating a total of $1.2 billion (£935.8 million) of revenue – 67.5% more than the studio has made.

The tour is filled with props and sets from the movies with the latest addition being Professor Sprout's Greenhouse which opened in summer 2022. From the outside, the giant greenhouse appears to be in the grip of a giant vine which covers the walls inside. Its tendrils spread into flower boxes where plants seem to sprout from them. Visitors can uproot them to reveal a squealing shrub as Harry and his chums did in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets .

As we recently revealed , the tour has been so successful that Warner has invested more than $115 million in its first overseas outpost which opened in Tokyo last year and is 50% bigger than its British counterpart.

Leavesden operates the Japanese facility as well as the wildly popular chain of Potter shops and the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage show which premiered in London in 2016 to critical acclaim. Since then it has expanded to five other countries and is still growing as the financial statements reveal that "in 2022 the company invested in another production of the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ."

Despite the logjam in Hollywood, Leavesden too is expanding. Last year it announced plans to build 11 new sound stages which will increase production capacity by more than 50% and will create 4,000 direct and indirect jobs. It is expanding to stay in the game in the face of increasing competition.

Britain has become a popular location for filming thanks to its generous fiscal benefits which give studios a reimbursement of up to 25.5% of the amount they spend in the country. It explains why Shepperton Studios, just outside London, is planning a 1.2 million square feet expansion which will make it the world's second-biggest studio.

Likewise, nearby Pinewood plans to spend $1.6 billion (£1.3 billion) on new facilities including a studio tour which will put it in even more direct competition with Leavesden. Over the past 80 years Pinewood has been home to everything from the Pink Panther and Paddington to Superman and Star Wars so it may take more than the wave of a magic wand to beat.
