2023 Recap Born and raised in Vermont, Keegan Bradley was able to outperform a loaded player field en route to a historic victory. The 2023 Travelers Championship featured the top eight players in the Official World Golf Ranking and 38 of the top 50 as one of the PGA TOUR’s exclusive Designated Events. Sunday’s final pairing was reminiscent of the 2019 Travelers Championship, when Reavie and Bradley were in the last group and battled for the title. Four years ago, Reavie defeated Bradley, who finished in a tie for second. This time, however, Bradley would not be denied. The gap between the two competitors quickly widened early in the round, with Bradley making birdies at the third, fourth and sixth holes and Reavie dropping a shot at the par-4 fifth. Bradley’s lead ultimately grew to six strokes and he coasted from there, shooting a 2-under-par 68 to cap off a record week. Bradley won the 2023 Travelers Championship by a three-stroke margin over Zac Blair (62 in the final round) and Brian Harman (64). Reavie (71), Cantlay (67) and Scottie Scheffler (65) were another stroke back at 19-under in a tie for fourth place.

Recent Champions Xander Schauffele (2022), Harris English (2021), Dustin Johnson (2020), Chez Reavie (2019), Bubba Watson (2018), Jordan Spieth (2017), Russell Knox (2016), Bubba Watson (2015), Kevin Streelman (2014), Ken Duke (2013), Marc Leishman (2012), Freddie Jacobson (2011), Bubba Watson (2010), Kenny Perry (2009), Stewart Cink (2008, 1997), Hunter Mahan (2007)

Charitable Focus The Travelers Championship is proud to participate in the PGA TOUR Tradition of Giving Back. Since its inception in 1952, Connecticut’s PGA TOUR event has donated more than $49 million to charities in the surrounding community.

Nonprofit Organization The Greater Hartford Community Foundation, Inc. was formed on October 21, 2005 as a nonprofit organization to promote community based fundraising activities and events, including sporting, cultural, educational and other charitable fundraising activities and events. The Foundation’s mission is to be a world class PGA TOUR event that maximizes giving to charity while benefiting the community. The Foundation’s primary fundraising activity is the Travelers Championship, Connecticut’s annual PGA TOUR golf tournament. The net proceeds realized by the tournament and other such activities and events are for the benefit of the citizens, social welfare organizations and other institutions of the community.

Golf's biggest names start Round 1 at the Travelers Championship

By pat eaton-robb & nbc ct staff • published june 22, 2023 • updated on june 22, 2023 at 9:43 am.

Play got underway Thursday morning for Round 1 of the Travelers Championship in Cromwell.

The world's top golfers have come to the TPC River Highlands for a chance at a $20 million purse.

Some of the names teeing off in the morning wave include Patrick Cantlay, Sahith Theegala, newly-crowned U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, and defending Travelers Championship winner Xander Schauffele.

The afternoon flight includes Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland, and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

Nathan Grube, the tournament director of the Travelers Championship, used to worry about the years when the U.S. Open took place on the West Coast.

Many of the world's top golfers would make a decision to take a break the week following the major or head to Europe to begin preparing for the Open Championship, rather than travel across the country to play at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut.

But this year, in response to LIV Golf, the Travelers was elevated to one of 17 so-called “designated” PGA Tour events, with a much bigger purse and a near mandate for top golfers to play, giving the tournament the guarantee of a strong field.

“I can tell you with certain confidence that I probably wouldn’t have been here even though I love the tournament so much,” Masters champion Jon Rahm said Tuesday. "With that said, they’ve done a great job making players comfortable. Having a charter flight always makes it a lot easier, maybe not for the best two or three players in the world, but for other people that are high-quality players as well that come and compete in this event.”

This week's tournament field includes the top eight golfers in the world rankings and 38 of the top 50.

Grube and his team have gotten a reputation of pampering golfers in an effort to get them to Connecticut, including running those free charter flights for players from the Open.

Once in the state, there are perks including free laundry and haircuts for caddies, daycare on-site, and day trips for spouses and children to amusement parks. This year, the tournament added a coffee and ice cream bar and lounge on the driving range.

Grube said it was in part because of its player-friendly reputation that the Travelers was chosen last fall to be among the first events to win elevated status.

“We’ve been auditioning for this for 16 years," Grube said, a reference to the length of time Travelers has been the event's title sponsor. ”And when it came time to go … We showed up."

The designated status means the total purse has increased from $8.3 to $20 million, with the winner taking home $3.6 million rather than the just under $1.5 million Xander Schauffele took home last June.

The top PGA Tour players are required to play in 16 of the 17 designated events.

“It almost feels like we’re at the playoffs every time we’re at these elevated events," Schauffele said during the Travelers media day news conference last month. "Everybody’s showing up, ready to go, the best players in the world showing up every week."

Thirteen of the 17 designated tournaments, including the four majors, have that status in perpetuity. The other four events, such as the Travelers, were originally expected to rotate from year to year.

Andy Bessette, the executive vice president and chief administrative officer for Travelers, said the Connecticut tournament has been in talks to keep its designated status for the foreseeable future.

“I’ve been working on the agreement to keep us elevated for 24, 25, 26, and I think we’re getting close," he said Tuesday. "But I think with everything going on in the world of golf these days, we’ve got to be a little more careful to make sure we understand what it’s going to look like. So it’s a little hard right now because the definitive agreement is going to be done by the end of the year. And once that’s done, then we have to see how it’s going to operate."

One of the possibilities is that the Travelers could become an event that features only the top 70 or so golfers in the world, with no cut, Bessette said.

But this tournament has become known for giving younger golfers their first shot at playing a PGA Tour event. U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark made his debut in Connecticut in 2017 and 17 golfers have earned their first PGA Tour win at the Travelers, including Stewart Cink (1997) and Bubba Watson (2010).

Patrick Cantlay, who made his first big mark by shooting a 60 on this course while still an amateur in 2011, said he's not worried about young golfers losing an opportunity.

“I think potentially it could lose something, but I think it gains something too,” he said. “I think there’s real power to having all the stars play an event and have them here for all four days. I don’t think there’ll be any difference on Tour. If you’re good enough to shoot the scores, you’re going to find your way out here sooner rather than later.”

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2023 Travelers Championship

Jared Wickerham

To win the Travelers Championship on Sunday required one simple strategy: Go low. And if you did that while already holding the 54-hole lead, as was the case for Keegan Bradley, you weren’t just going to win, but win comfortably.

With a closing 68 at TPC River Highlands to follow up rounds of 62-63-64, the 37-year-old New England native broke the 71-year-old event’s 72-hole scoring record by one shot. A 23-under 257 total was three shots clear of runners-up Zac Blair and Brian Harman, giving Bradley his sixth career PGA Tour victory and the second of the 2022-23 season.

With the victory, Bradley claimed the first-place prize money payout of $3.6 million from the $20 million purse at this latest PGA Tour designated event. That payday helped push Bradley past the $40 million mark in career earnings.

MORE: The clubs Keegan Bradley used to win the Travelers Championship

Bradley, who had a six-shot lead at one point on the back nine, allowing him to make bogeys on the 13th, 14th and 16th holes and still roll to the title, bucked the recent trend at the Travelers. Only three of the last 11 54-hole leaders had been able to close out the victory in Cromwell, Conn., Bradley joining Jordan Spieth in 2017, Chez Reavie in 2019 and Xander Schauffele in 2022. And having held 54-hole leads four previous times in his career, this is the first time he was able to turn it into a victory

Here’s prize money payout for each golfer who made the cut this week in Connecticut.

CT welcomes world's best golf pros to annual Travelers Championship in Cromwell

Pro golfer Sepp Straka signs autographs at the 2023 Traveler’s Championship on June 21, 2023 in Cromwell, Connecticut.

Some of the world's best golfers are heading to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. Round 1 starts Thursday at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.

As golfers take to the green, Cromwell is gearing up for a steady stream of visitors.

Town Planning and Development Director Stuart Popper said the municipality doesn’t keep track of how many people visit the town, dine in restaurants and stay at local hotels. But, the impact is palpable.

“Everybody hears about Cromwell the whole time; it's on TV, and it gives us a great recognition event,” Popper said. “It's a lovely asset to our community, the course. The TPC Players Club, the facilities are all a benefit to the town.”

Many fans were in Cromwell Wednesday for the Travelers Championship Pro-Am, a golf event featuring celebrities.

While Cromwell’s hotels and inns are booked up, he said day trippers stop by in an economic ripple effect felt throughout the area.

“It's not like a convention where everybody's staying in one hotel, or in a giant convention center. It's more of a thing where people come to town, they go to the event, they eat and drink at the event, they attend the event,” Popper said. “They might go out and have dinner in Cromwell. They might come here and have breakfast before they go for the day.”

About the course

TPC River Highlands is a par 70, 6,841-yard course in Cromwell, 10 miles south of Hartford.

"The course is a well-balanced golf test with a mixture of long and short holes," the championship website says. "The most notable stretch is Nos. 15-17 which play around a four-acre lake. When you include the home hole, the four-hole collection is, according to Stewart Cink, 'four of the most exciting finishing holes in a group anywhere in the world.'"

About the sponsorship

The tournament is sponsored by insurance giant Travelers, which is the lead sponsor of the event through 2030.

PGA merger with LIV raises questions

The golf championship is also drawing attention as the PGA tour recently merged with Saudi-backed LIV Golf.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, a Democrat, and Republican Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin called on the Saudi Public Investment Fund leaders to discuss the country’s involvement in the professional golf merger.

“Our goal is to uncover the facts about what went into the PGA Tour’s deal with the Saudi Public Investment Fund and what the Saudi takeover means for the future of this cherished American institution and our national interest,” Blumenthal said in a statement.

Blumenthal and Johnson asked Saudi and PGA leaders to attend a hearing planned for mid-July.

The hearing will look at the planned agreement between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabian government and the future of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf in the U.S.

The #1 brewery in Connecticut in 2024—and see the rest of the top 30, according to visitors

Posted: July 6, 2024 | Last updated: July 6, 2024

Cold beer, anyone? American beer drinkers have their fair share of options no matter where they might live.

Indeed, a market once dominated by a handful of major brands has become far more diverse since the craft beer scene expanded sixfold between 2008 and 2016. Independent production cooled off just a little in 2023 but still accounted for a whopping 23.4 million barrels of beer and craft beer's overall market share by volume rose to 13.3%, according to the Brewers Association. For context, in 2013, there were 3,108 craft breweries in the U.S.—and as of 2023, there are 9,761, representing a 214% increase in just a decade. Cheers to that!

Why the ongoing obsession? Putting aside the fact that people simply love their brew, beer has emerged as a wildly versatile beverage category. Highest-rated breweries in Connecticut

For context, in 2013, there were 3,108 craft breweries in the U.S. —and as of 2023, there are 9,761, representing a 214% increase in just a decade. Cheers to that!

Why the ongoing obsession? Putting aside the fact that people simply love their brew, beer has emerged as a wildly versatile beverage category. Craft breweries explore beer to its fullest potential and tend to rank highly as a result.

Another thing about beer is that every sip tells a story. It's first and foremost the journey of the beer's own production, namely one involving water, malted grains, botanical hops, and yeast. However, it's also a chronicling of the area in which the beer was produced since every state has its own respective history, climate, geography, and resources. Then there's the tale of the people who produced it, turning their love of carbonated alcohol into a passion project and hiring all kinds of local talent.

Combine America's love of beer with endless flavor possibilities, and you arrive at a sensational pastime and a thriving national industry. With nearly 10,000 craft breweries bubbling up across the nation, each one offers its own unique qualities, some complete with guided tours and tasting rooms (and maybe some hearty gastropub fare).

Many of the nation's highest-rated breweries are so small and independent that the only way to sample their suds is to visit them in person, while others distribute their products around the country—or even across the globe.

To find some top spots near you, Stacker compiled a list of the highest-rated breweries in Connecticut using data from Tripadvisor . Tripadvisor ranks places using a combination of metrics, including overall rating, reviews, and number of page views. As a result, a business with a 5 out of 5 overall rating might rank lower than one with a 4 out of 5. Data is as of June 6, 2024.

Regardless of the brewery's size and scope, one thing is for sure: Now is a great time for a beer!
