The boardwalk offers a modern take on the self-guided tour. It uses signs adorned with QR codes guests can scan with their smartphones to discover in-depth information about each specific zone. Inside the Nature Center, you'll find multiple exhibits focused on the area's natural environment, as well as live animals, a theater, and gift shop.

The 1.5-mile boardwalk takes visitors on an elevated tour through the wetlands' unique ecosystems. You'll pass cypress swampland, as well as three types of habitats: cabbage palm, wetland, and tropical hardwood.

Getting there and around

It’s easy to get to Delray Beach by flying into Ft. Lauderdale International or Palm Beach International—it's about 30 minutes away from either. If it doesn’t break the bank, flying into PBI provides a less stressful, easier to manage situation. Even though Delray’s downtown area is dense, you'll want to rent a car as South Florida is generally spread out. If you plan on visiting anything outside of a one mile radius you’ll want to drive. Nearby towns, such as Boca Raton, are worth visiting and public transportation is less than stellar—though  the Brightline , a new high-speed train line, makes it easy to take a day trip to Miami sans vehicle.

20 minutes west of downtown by car, the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens pays tribute to Yamato—a colony formed by Japanese farmers in the area in 1904.

What to do in Delray Beach

Delray Beach lives up to its reputation as an artsy hamlet thanks to an abundance of art galleries. It’s hard not to stop in your tracks when you stroll past  Blue Gallery on Atlantic Avenue with whimsical metal  wall sculptures by Joel Amit on display among other works. A couple blocks off of Atlantic Avenue, a former spa was transformed into the  Heart of Delray Gallery which displays art and houses artist workspaces. If you happen to be in town the first Friday of the month, check out the  First Friday Art Walk for a self-guided tour of the galleries featuring live music throughout.

Take an excursion to the  Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens , about a 20-minute drive west of downtown. The museum pays tribute to Yamato, a colony formed by Japanese farmers that moved to the area in 1904, and sits on 200 acres, 16 of which are traditional Japanese gardens designed by  Hoichi Kuriso . The museum houses Japanese art and artifacts along with rotating exhibits.

Visiting the beach is easy, just follow Atlantic Avenue until it dead ends at A1A. While you're there, you may as well pop into the  Sandoway Discovery Center , found across the street from the beach on A1A. Kids especially love the historic house-turned-science museum that puts Florida nature on display throughout its rooms. The museum's backyard adds an exciting element in the form of a recently renovated 15,000 gallon saltwater pool that's home to a nurse shark (with more on the way), as well as a stingray touch tank.

One of the best ways to see Delray Beach—and its stunning waterfront mansions—is from the intracoastal on a  Delray Yacht Cruise tour. Available daily, the two-hour cruises go up and down the waterway (keep an eye out for marine life). 

Glitzy Elisabetta's serves brick oven-baked pizzas and other Italian fare in elevated surroundings. 

Elisabetta's pasta menu is split between “long”—like the linguine con vongole seen here—and “short” (think rigatoni, ravioli, risotto). 

Best restaurants in Delray Beach

One could easily spend two days just snacking along Atlantic Avenue. Start the day at  Over the Bridge Cafe , a completely alfresco, but covered, dining spot where comforting breakfast items like cream cheese-stuffed challah French toast topped with strawberry compote and short rib hash reign supreme. If you prefer pastries for breakfast, stop by  Amar Bakery which specializes in Mediterranean-inspired baked goods such as mini olive oil and lemon loaf cakes, za’atar and haloumi croissants, and spinach pies. They also serve locally-roasted Pumphouse Coffee.

You're in a coastal town, so waterfront dining is mandatory.  Deck 84 sits on the intracoastal with views of the drawbridge and passing boats with fare like smoked fish dip and burgers. For a meal with fewer frills, Sandwiches by the Sea serves up hearty subs worthy of a beach picnic.

Dinnertime calls for something more elevated—nothing in Delray is ever too fussy, however—like the glitzy  Elisabetta’s which counts brick oven-baked wild mushroom pizza and fried bread with ricotta and prosciutto among the standout options. Even in the heat, Delray mainstay  Dada , offers respite in its eclectic dining room within in a 1920s house. Outside, a sprawling patio graced by a stately banyan tree makes an ideal spot to enjoy jalapeño agave-glazed salmon alongside a fruity mojito (start with the strawberry basil). 

Delray may be even more lively at night thanks to music venues such as Tin Roof and Johnnie Brown’s, where you’ll hear anything from Mo Town classics to classic rock. The  Arts Garage , located within the Pineapple Grove Arts District, has comedy performances in addition to live music. And ending the night with a scoop of stracciatella at  Gelato & Co. is always a good choice.

The beachfront Opal Grand has an expansive pool with ocean views. 

New hotels in Delray Beach

It's hard to beat the recently renovated (in 2022)  Seagate Hotel & Spa for upscale accommodations that still manage to feel intimate on busy Atlantic Avenue. The lobby of the 154-room property sets the tone with soothing neutral accents while the recently renovated rooms are bright and airy with spacious balconies. Tropical trees surround the pool, lending to its secluded ambiance, and it's only a 10-minute walk from the beach. Guests also have access to the hotel’s private beach club with its own pool and restaurant. 

For more of a resort vibe, the  Opal Grand , a beachfront property that was renovated in 2021, has coastal-hued rooms, an expansive pool with ocean views, and a forthcoming roof deck. While you probably opt to only dine at the hotel, it comprises a cocktail bar, posh seafood restaurant, and a pool-adjacent alfresco bar making it easy to do so if you wanted. It’s an upscale family-friendly option with plenty of space to spread out whether that’s in a poolside cabana or a villa with a kitchenette. 

The Ray Hotel , a recent addition to Delray, opened in 2021 and presents a modern alternative befitting the Pineapple Grove Arts District with living walls, sculptures, and a chic rooftop pool. It's further inland, about a mile from the beach, but ideal for those who like details such as chilled towels at the gym and swanky hotel dining. The crown jewel of the dining options, Akira Back allures with a Japanese and Korean-inspired menu by the eponymous chef who was born in Seoul.

Preserving the landscape and architecture of the past, Anna Maria Island resisted building high-rises like beaches to the north and south. This island's quiet delights attract new visitors while locals cherish its pristine scenery.

"What a Florida postcard!" developer Will Bean must have thought over 100 years ago, seeing this seahorse-shaped, 7-mile-long barrier island with white sands, surrounded by the sparkling Gulf of Mexico on the west and the deep blue bay waters to the east. It is an irresistible escape for winter-weary Northerners and anyone who wants a ticket to paradise any time of year.

History Of Anna Maria Island

Inheriting the land from his father (Anna Maria Island's first homesteader) in 1892, Will Bean worked with fellow promoter and developer Charles Roser to make the island an escape ready to appeal to investors. With a knack for publicity, he even purchased exotic seashells to secretly scatter along the beaches every night so tourists would find them—and write home boasting about this shell-seeking destination.

A cottage-lined main street led to a long pier, welcoming steamship-borne travelers. Later, tidy plats of cinder block-and-concrete houses for snowbirds and beach motels scattered Anna Maria Island as new properties developed along the gorgeous shore.

Areas Of Anna Maria Island

The island encompasses three quaint towns: Anna Maria in the north, Bradenton Beach in the south, and Holmes Beach in the middle. Each requires slow driving (25 mph in most cases) and displays its wares with ready ease. You won't find chain stores, fast-food restaurants, or high-rise hotels. Instead, enjoy charming boutiques, mom-and-pop eateries, and lots of local flavors that give a taste of old Florida hospitality.

Pine Avenue

Starting at the north end sits the city of Anna Maria anchored by Pine Avenue, Bean's original sand-and-seashell main street that bisects the island. Here, brightly painted restored homes and mercantile buildings from the original boom now hold charming markets, galleries, bakeries, museums, bike shops, restaurants, and (naturally) vacation-rental offices.

While Pine Avenue hums with the old and the new simultaneously, just up the road, the island's iconic circa-1950 Rod & Reel Pier holds onto its timeless, weathered dock leading to a double-decker building (with seafood above and a bar below),

Holmes Beach

In Anna Maria's slender midsection, the town of Holmes Beach is ground zero for ogling mid-century Florida homes, plying old-school souvenir shops and beach bars, and strolling along the pristine beaches' soft, powdery-white sand.

Bradenton Beach

Farther south, Bradenton Beach holds the short, fun-loving Bridge Street at its heart—a salty complement to Pine Avenue. A tiny miniature golf course, seafood joints, waterfront bars with thatched tiki perches, and a pier culminate in a fine oyster house with views up and down the bay.

Beach Access Options

With dozens of short public pathways to get to the Anna Maria beaches, the choices seem almost dizzying—and they're all fantastic. Pick the access closest to you, take an umbrella for shade, and occupy your slice of Gulf Coast paradise. Spend a day at Anna Maria's southern tip at Coquina Beach, famed for its vast stretches of sand and flanks of palms. Make a pilgrimage at dusk to Bean Point at the north tip of the island to watch the sun drop into the Gulf.

Historic Green Village

Anna Maria's Historic Green Village is a group of old buildings retrofitted with solar panels and rainwater cisterns to become a net-zero community. It's proof that you can live the Florida life—and even stay cool—without wasting resources.

Flying into this seaside community is easy. Tampa International Airport is about an hour's drive, while Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport is just 30 minutes away. If you're planning to hit the road and drive south, at least a few miles on I-75 is likely in your future. The highway from Atlanta will drop you almost directly next to Anna Maria Island.

Get a Dose of Nostalgia at a Charming Motel or Cottage

In Holmes Beach, spend a few nights at Bamboo Apartments (which owner Alice Sutton's grandparents constructed in 1971) or the 1916 beachfront cottage on the property, and you instantly hear the whisper of Old Florida. "My grandmother had one phone for the whole place," Sutton says. "She'd run out to the beach to see if her guests wanted to take a call when it came in. They usually didn't!"

It's easy to see why. With a small knoll of sand and sea oats breaking into a wide beach infused with western breezes and rolling waves, it still feels like Sutton has the only phone on the island. And there's no need to take any calls, thank you.

It's an Old Florida treasure on the sand and steps away from the island's free trolley stop. Done up with vintage-style rattan and wicker, all five units are delights. The original 1916 duplex cottage lined in heart pine (including the ceiling and floors) is nostalgic perfection. Other motels bursting with charm include Cedar Cove Resort & Cottages , Haley's Motel , and Bungalow Beach Resort .

Enjoy the Comforts of an Amenity-Packed Resort 

For a resort experience, opt for a luxurious stay at the Waterline Villas & Marina in Holmes Beach. The two-bedroom villa-condo units feature a full kitchen and a large, comfy living room, and plenty of things to do to keep guests entertained. Complimentary bicycles for island cruising, sunset yoga sessions overlooking the marina, artist-led watercolor classes, a resort-style pool, and an on-site restaurant make a case for never leaving the property.

After the first glance, this beautifully old-fashioned place offers some of the most decidedly modern spots.

Start With a Made-From-Scratch Breakfast

A breakfast, or any time of day, treat is the wild original topping combinations at The Donut Experiment. Some featured donuts include Key Lime and Sriracha made with peanut butter, peanuts, and a sriracha drizzle. The Pine Avenue shop will layer your cakey confection with various frostings and wild toppings (including Fruity Pebbles).

There's no better breakfast on the island than at Ginny's & Jane E's , an eye-popping, warmhearted restaurant and marketplace. The food, cooked from scratch, is outmatched only by the legendary oversized cinnamon rolls.

For small takeaway plates, try The Waffle Press . This breakfast spot tops its breakfast creations with a variety of sweet and savory options.

Seek Seafood and Views for Lunch

For lunch, visit Anna Maria Oyster Bar on the Historic Bridge Street Pier for heavenly coconut shrimp, tuna poke, and calamari while watching the boats bobbing past, or snag a table overlooking the Manatee River at the elegant Pier 22 in Bradenton, which hosts a full sushi bar opposite an enormous aquarium.

Belly Up to a Beach Bar

At happy hour, The Waterfront Restaurant near City Pier mixes the island's best cocktails. For beach-bar-style fun, head straight for the Bridge Tender Inn in Bradenton Beach or The Ugly Grouper in Holmes Beach.

Savor All the Dinner Options

There are plenty of local eats to discover after a long day at the beach. Dinner at the Sandbar restaurant is a revelation. It's a toes-in-the-sand spot with a stunning sunset view of the Gulf and locally sourced seafood. (Its sister location, Beach House Restaurant in Bradenton Beach, offers similar delights.) The Mexican-inspired restaurant, Poppo's Taqueria , makes tortillas by hand for fresh tacos, quesadillas, and burritos and has local kombucha and beer on draft. Vinny's Italian Kitchen offers melt-in-your-mouth eggplant and chicken parmigiana along with an extensive list of pastas, pizzas, and sandwiches. And for an upscale experience, dine at the Waterline resort's restaurant, Chateau Anna Maria , for fresh seafood and prime cuts.

Shop Pine Avenue’s Unique Stores

You can spend a day (at least) mining the goods in and around Pine Avenue. Look for Spartina 449 tunics at The Egret's Nest and Lilly Pulitzer resort wear at The Island Cabana .

Pop into artists' studios like Emerson Quillin's shop , whose whimsical brand of humor hits the mark, or the Studio at Gulf and Pine , which has beautiful and affordable options to explore from local artists.

Sample flavored oils and freshly baked bread at Anna Maria Olive Oil Outpost while the Anna Maria General Store is an ideal spot to stock up on treats from the area.

Explore the town's colorful, creative past at the free Anna Maria Island Historical Society museum —the gift shop sells artisan crafts like hand-woven baskets crafted from palmetto fronds.

Dive Into a Favorite Outdoor Activity

Delray Beach sits on Florida’s southeast coast and is part of the desirable Palm Beaches area of Palm Beach County — ”Florida’s Village by the Sea.” It is a treasure trove of art galleries and pub art installments. You are sure to love a day trip or weekend getaway to this upscale beach community that doesn’t have as great of a price tag as some of its neighboring towns, nor the crowds. Best of all, the desirable downtown area of Delray Beach is walkable, and there is plenty of parking. Here are the best things to do in Delray Beach, plus where to stay and eat.

Things To Do In Delray Beach

Delray Beach offers impeccable white sandy beaches, dozens of art galleries and installments, top-notch eateries (many with outdoor dining), and a beautiful landscape to soak up along the way.

Pineapple Grove Arts District

This is a designated part of downtown with many art galleries (Artists Alley), an outdoor farmers market, and a treasured museum (mentioned below). Stroll through the Pineapple Grove Arts District and enjoy the impressive murals and sculptures, have gourmet ice cream, shop at the primo boutiques, or even enjoy the great shaded areas to people watch and enjoy the weather.

Green Market

The Green Market in Delray Beach is one of the best in Florida. Saturday mornings, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Old School Square Park turns into a healthy marketplace filled with 65+ vendors sharing loose teas, prepared foods, fresh bread and pastries, farm-to-fork produce, and the best vegan/vegetarian offerings available. Live music is a real treat.

Morikami Museum And Japanese Gardens

This lakeside treasure is the only place in Florida for Japanese Gardens. Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens have an indoor museum for exhibits, tea ceremonies, and workshops. They represent Japanese cultures well, and the learning opportunities at Morikami are unique to other museums you can visit.

Outside, Morikami’s sprawling grounds offer a zenful place to explore. You’ll see a bonsai garden with breathtaking pieces and a sparkling lake with gators often sunbathing on the banks. Five other garden types showcase significant Japanese gardens. Morikami is closed on Mondays.

Silverball Retro Arcade

My favorite thing to do in Delray Beach takes me back to my childhood with a Silverball Retro Arcade visit. This cool attraction is home to hundreds of pinball games and other fun family-friendly games (think Skeeball). It’s a great place to visit if you’ve still got it in terms of being a pinball wizard. It’s a walk down memory lane for me seeing the pinball games featuring KISS, Rocky, and Charlie’s Angels. Other arcade games include the ones I’m good at (probably you, too), like Frogger, Donkey Kong, and Centipede, to name a few. Food and drinks are also available at Silverball Retro Arcade.

Sandoway Discovery Center

Sandoway Discovery Center is a nature center in Delray Beach with ecosystems and marine life, dubbed South Florida’s premier coastal venue. It is literally in a beachfront house. From sharks and shells to stingray feedings and garden walks, you will have a great time learning about Florida life here. Sandoaway is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Admission is $6.

Amanda James Gallery

The Amanda James Gallery is an adorable, colorful boutique featuring fantastic designs on canvas, pillows, bedding, scarves, and handbags. I learned about it on a Taste History culinary tour that takes you to food institutions and art/history attractions in the area. My favorites at Amanda James are the jewelry, one-of-a-kind earrings, and necklaces that are thought-provoking and conversation starters. I could never visit this store and not walk away with something cool and innovative.

Intriguing Bookstore

Now that you are at the beach, it’s time to pick up a good read for your relaxing sun and fun days. Delray Beach has a hidden gem at the Murder on the Beach Mystery Bookstore . Specializing in suspense, murder, and thriller novels, this is a great niche bookstore. They even host writers we all know and love for book signings from time to time, including James Patterson, Stuart Woods, and Tim Dorsey, to name a few.

Atlantic Avenue

You’ll be in shoppers paradise as you stroll the beautiful main thoroughfare in Delray Beach: Atlantic Avenue. “The Avenue” is the downtown Delray Beach epicenter and where the shopping, dining, and arts scenes overflow. From stunning jewelry and gifts to home decor, custom artworks, and stylish threads, you can pretty much find anything your heart desires to buy in this walkable avenue. An organized tour is a great way to introduce Delray Beach and familiarize yourself with the area, such as the Craft Food Tour .

Best Restaurants In Delray Beach

I love eating in Delray Beach. The food scene is fresh, simple, and really delicious. Prices tend to be slightly higher due to the location and ritzy neighbors, but every meal I’ve had was worth the price. There is also a wide array of choices to satisfy every palate.

Taverna Opa

At its finest, Greek food is what you’ll find at Taverna Opa , a casual restaurant in the heart of downtown. Start your meal with a lip-smacking Trio Spread with three delicious Greek dips and warm pita bread. Consider a Souvlaki Platter (chicken or pork) or a traditional Greek salad (add gyro meat) for your main course.

Vic And Angelos

Chances are the smell of fresh, hot garlic bread will capture your senses long before you even arrive at Vic and Angelos , the premier Italian restaurant in Delray Beach. Vic and Angelos is a warm and inviting eatery with exposed brick and a relaxing vibe. The Calamari Fritti is a great starter or the house-made burrata. Boston’s On The Beach

It’s no surprise that being on the water, Delray Beach has incredible seafood restaurants. Boston’s on the Beach , on Ocean Boulevard, is my favorite. The restaurant group has three eateries (Sandbar Delray Beach, 50 Ocean with an incredible weekend brunch, and Boston’s). Boston’s on the Beach is the New England-style seafood option, with outstanding fresh catch options on the menu.

I’m a seafood lover, so Conch Fritters are my go-to appetizer. Main dish items run the gamut from handhelds and seafood creations to gourmet burgers and salads. Boston’s on the Beach is an excellent place to sip a specialty cocktail, such as a Rum Runner, daiquiri, or tropical Goombay Smash. Beer and wine are also options.

Sloan’s Ice Cream

Your visit to Delray Beach is taken to the next level with a sweet indulgence from Sloan’s Ice Cream . This eye-catching pastel-colored, sparkly ice cream utopia features dipped apples, ice cream, fudge, cookies, and dozens of other candy and dessert options. I recommend the Almond Joy, Coffee and Doughnuts, and Ginger Snappy ice cream flavors, though many are seasonal only. I may or may not have licked the bowl from a sinfully-delicious brownie sundae.

Best Hotels In Delray Beach

Accommodations in Delray Beach include chain and luxury boutique hotels, bed and breakfasts, and Airbnb stays. There are also many timeshares in the area.

My top lodging pick at Delray Beach is the Four-Diamond Opal Grand Resort , a sophisticated oceanfront property with ocean-inspired contemporary accommodations and a fabulous spa. Step into the stylish lobby and be immersed in a lovely waterfall and living green walls setting that welcomes you to beautiful Delray Beach in a fitting way. Treat yourself to appetizers and drinks from Cascades Poolside Grill before indulging in a relaxing hot-stone massage or body treatment from the Opal Spa.

Pro Tip: Opal Grand is pet-friendly to those with under 30-pound fur babies. The villas by the sea are the condo-style overnight options with full kitchens. The villas are great for saving a few bucks and having a legit home-away-from-home.

Another cool place to stay on your Delray travels is Crane’s Beach House , a boutique hotel plus luxury villas. This elegant resorts with 28 rooms and villas tout themselves as “one of the most exclusive resorts known to the Palm Beaches Area. This magical hideaway bristles with tropical Key West style beauty, barely visible through the perimeter treeline, earning its mystique as ‘Delray’s hidden treasure.’” That description is intriguing enough to catch my interest.

Crane’s Beach House rooms are beautifully decorated and have everything needed to ensure a luxury stay. A tropical courtyard, pool, and tiki bar are bonus features.

Delray Beach isn’t as well-known as some of its powerhouse neighboring cities, but believe me, it packs an incredible punch. Delray Beach is a place you will delight in the charm, relaxed vibe, and palm-tree lined streets as you explore an area still undiscovered by many.

It’s easy to see after visiting why Delray Beach was awarded “Happiest Seaside Town” by Coastal Living in 2015 and “Most Fun Small Town in America” by USA Today , all while receiving the coveted “All American City” award for three years. Delray’s Beaches

Without a doubt, the most popular attraction in Delray Beach is its eponymous public beach, a little slice of heaven. The soft white sands, the turquoise waters, and the excellent amenities make this stretch of the coastline a haven for beachgoers. Visitors can take a dip in the sea, sunbathe, picnic , or engage in various water sports such as paddleboarding and kayaking.

Lifeguards are on duty, ensuring everyone’s safety, but it is up to you to remember plenty of sunscreen to protect yourself from the intense Florida sunshine. Many parts of Delray Beach are pet-friendly but require your pet to be on a leash.

Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens

The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is a serene oasis enclosed by sixteen acres of Japanese gardens. The museum’s exhibits showcase the history and culture of Japan while the gardens feature tranquil waterfalls, bonsai trees, and a bamboo grove.

Guided tours are available, or visitors can explore the grounds at their leisure, which I did. Tickets are $15 for adults and $9 for children ages 6 to 17. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Wakedahatchee Wetlands

Surrounded by urban sprawl on all sides, the Wakodahatchee Wetlands are a nature lover’s paradise. The wetlands contain a boardwalk that weaves and winds around multiple ponds, where visitors can spot an array of exotic bird species, turtles, and alligators.

The mile-long boardwalk’s various viewing platforms offer excellent vantage points for the wetlands’ breathtaking beauty. Please note that pets are not allowed on the boardwalk .

Pineapple Grove Arts District

The Pineapple Grove Arts District is a vibrant neighborhood in the heart of downtown Delray Beach. You’ll know you are there when you reach the picturesque arch and see Old School Square.

Pineapple Grove is renowned for its charming architecture, eclectic art galleries, microbreweries, and cafes. Visitors can wander the streets and admire the colorful murals adorning the walls, browse through vintage shops, or enjoy an evening of live music.

Delray Green Market

Shopping enthusiasts will love Delray’s one-of-a-kind boutiques with the latest fashions, home decor, artwork, and accessories. Check out Delray Beach’s  Green Market  every Saturday at Old School Square Park from 9 AM to 2 PM for a large variety of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and other food vendors.

The market even has live music, flowers, and plants, offering fun for the entire family. Try the product and food samples you want to become more familiar with. This is where I learned to love plant-based foods.

Atlantic Avenue

If you are looking for a lively and bustling place to hang out, then Atlantic Avenue is the spot. This palm-tree-lined strip covers several blocks and is lined with gourmet restaurants, cafes, chic bars, and boutique shops. Whether you are in the mood for a romantic candlelit dinner or a fun night out with friends, check out the Avenue’s vibrant culture.

Nearby, Artists Alley is a great place to take Instagram-worthy photos.

Silverball Pinball Museum

I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that the  Silverball Retro Arcade  is one of my favorite spots in South Florida. This fantastic museum has a collection of retro 1930s to 1980s collectible pinball games. The thrilling game room is home to flashy video games from times past, pool tables, classic arcade games, and a full-service restaurant.

There is a separate bar area at Silverball Retro Arcade for unwinding after a hard day at work. This arcade screams Baby Boomer, Generation X’er, and Millennials surprisingly in the same manner—game lovers unite!

Dining in Delray Beach

Delray Beach has many fabulous restaurants, ranging from fresh seafood and sushi to great Italian food, international eats, and the best ice cream in the state.

The Office , my preferred Delray Beach restaurant, is a charming eatery with indoor and outdoor seating. It boasts a delightful ambiance with exquisite decor, complemented by an enticing menu featuring tantalizing comfort food favorites.

The Huckleberry BBQ Short Rib Grilled Cheese is a heavenly adult grilled cheese sandwich meticulously crafted with a blend of mozzarella, white cheddar, gouda, and provolone. 

Try the sweet potato fries with marshmallow dipping sauce as your side. They are incredible!

Boston’s on the Beach

Boston’s on the Beach in Delray Beach is a must-visit destination. Begin your culinary journey with the delectable Onion Dip, served alongside homemade chips lightly dusted with flavorful onion powder. Prepare your taste buds for an unforgettable dinner experience with options like the Peel and Eat Shrimp or the mouthwatering Lobster Pot.

Indulge in perfectly steamed seafood, accompanied by delectable red bliss buttered potatoes and yummy corn-on-the-cob.

Situated at the Delray Sands Resort in Highland Beach, Latitudes offers a captivating oceanfront ambiance complemented by exquisite cuisine and delightful cocktails. A visit to this establishment is justified by the complimentary bread alone.

Indulging in the Crab and Lobster Stuffed Jumbo Shrimp, served over a bed of white corn polenta and sautéed garlic spinach, is a gratifying experience. Leave space for the creme brûlée, topped with an abundance of fresh berries.

Vic and Angelo’s

Vic and Angelo’s is an enchanting venue, with impeccable service and delectable Italian fare. From traditional favorites to innovative creations, this renowned Delray Beach restaurant offers a culinary experience nothing short of extraordinary.

Indulge in the Orecchiette, featuring fresh broccoli rabe and fennel sausage, or savor the Spaghetti & Nonna’s Gigante Meatball, accompanied by a decadent San Marzano tomato sauce. Check out the impressive wine menu, too.

Bamboo Fire Cafe

During a delightful Taste History Food Tour, I was introduced to Bamboo Fire Cafe, which proved to be a true culinary delight with its exceptional flavors. The owners, exuding warmth and expertise, showcased their remarkable talent in crafting Caribbean delicacies. Our sampling included lamb chops, savory meatballs, really flavorful jerk chicken, and mouthwatering curry goat with fragrant roti.

Furthermore, the team at Bamboo Fire Cafe graciously caters to individual preferences, as they are more than willing to adjust the spice level to your liking.

Two other places I always enjoy are Rocco’s Tacos , for the Austin Queso and sizzling Carene molcajetes, and Taverna Spa for the eggplant layered Moussaka.

Sloan’s Ice Cream

Remember the best ice cream in Florida I was talking about in the beginning? Well, here it is.

Sloan’s Ice Cream has become a beloved establishment in South Florida, specifically in Delray Beach, known for its sparkling decor featuring exquisite chandeliers that create a regal ambiance upon entering. In addition to an impressive range of ice cream treats such as shakes, malts, and sundaes, Sloan’s offers an extensive assortment of confectionery and freshly-baked cookies.

Other honorable mentions are Two Fat Cookies bakery and custom treats and The Original Popcorn House for, well, you know, gourmet sweet or savory popcorn.

1. Atlantic Avenue

3. Saltwater Brewery

Saltwater Brewery is Delray Beach’s first local production microbrewery with a “Reef Room” for tastings on site. 4.  Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens

Visitors of Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens have the opportunity to discover South Florida’s connection with Japan while exploring a series of six lush, authentic gardens. Each garden was inspired by a different period and style of Japanese gardening, and all were designed by Hoichi Kurisu. The museum showcases traditional and contemporary Japanese culture through engaging exhibits, a variety of educational events, a world-class bonsai display, Pan-Asian cuisine at the Cornell Cafe, and a distinctive museum store filled with one-of-a-kind items for all age groups. 5. Wakodahatchee Wetlands

As the first wetlands park in the region, Wakodahatchee Wetlands provides a diverse wildlife habitat that has attracted more than 150 different species of birds as well as alligators, rabbits, turtles, otters, foxes and other creatures found in a healthy South Florida wetland ecosystem. The public also “flocks” to Wakodahatchee, one of the most popular bird-watching and photography spots in The Palm Beaches. 6. Delray Municipal Beach

Visitors looking for excitement can rent equipment – from snorkeling gear to paddleboards – at the  Delray Beach Watersports  shack on the beach near Casurina Drive. Parking is also available nearby, as are several restaurants and eateries you can walk to when you’ve worked up your appetite, such as  Boston’s on the Beach  and  Caffe Luna Rosa .  Lifeguards are posted along the shore, and the beach itself is free, with metered parking nearby costing $1.50 an hour.

7.  Delray Beach Market

With about 35 individually curated, best-in-class vendors, Delray Beach Market is Florida’s largest food hall. But it’s more than just food and drinks. It is also a place to connect and a way to experience and celebrate the vibrant food culture of Delray Beach with visionary arts, immersive pop-ups, and a wide variety of vendors who satisfy any craving.

8. Sandoway House Nature Center

The Sandoway Discovery Center offers a glimpse into South Florida’s fragile marine and freshwater environments through educational exhibits and programs. Visitors of all ages can get an up-close view of some of Florida’s native and invasive reptiles, meet sharks and other fish at the coral reef pool, explore Southeast Florida’s largest private shell collection, and learn about natural history and the environment at the center’s library. The nature center’s activities include daily shark and stingray feedings, weekly alligator feedings, beach and dune walks, garden walks, live animal exhibits and fossil digs.

9.  THRōW Social

10. Delray Beach Green Market

Established in 1996 by the Community Redevelopment Agency, the Delray Green Market is a popular Saturday morning destination as an open-air marketplace. The Summer Green Market operates June and July from 9 am to 1 pm and the Winter Green Market operates October thru May from 9 am to 2 pm in front of the Cornell Museum of Art at Old School Square, Delray Beach. You’ll find more than 50 vendors featuring a wide variety of farm-to-fork products, such as citrus and juice, farm fresh eggs, milk and butter, grass-fed Florida beef, poultry, pork and lamb, baked goods, as well as several gluten free, vegan, and sugar free products, flowers, and plants.

Atlantic Avenue

Take a long stroll up and down “The Ave” which is the main street in Delray Beach located on Atlantic Avenue. It has a combination of high-end to affordable boutiques, galleries, and antique shops. 

Grab a meal on “The Ave” after browsing the shops. This downtown treasure has an array of restaurants that serve fresh seafood, steaks and more ranging from affordable or 4-star eateries to fill your belly when you develop an appetite. 

Morikami Museum And Japanese Gardens

Tour the 188.5-acre Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens modeled like a Japanese villa. Housed inside are over 7,000 Japanese artifacts and information about the Japanese immigrants in the area.  

Outside you can take a peaceful stroll through the 6- themed gardens that capture Japan’s gardening styles with a variety of flowers, trees, and statues.

Pineapple Grove Arts District

Pineapple Grove Arts District is a popular spot for the locals in Delray Beach. Located right off Atlantic Avenue this side of town is splashed with colorful murals and sculptures. 

One of the fun things to do in Delray is to browse the many galleries, restaurants, shops, and Artist Alley along the street.

Silver Ball Museum 

Transform yourself back into the 1950s at the Silver Ball Museum , where adults can become a kid. 

Sliver Ball is a unique spot to visit in Delray Beach and has over 100 classic pinball machines and arcade games occupying the museum. Enjoy playing classics such a skeeball and Miss Pac-Man.

One of the top places to go in Delray Beach is of course the beach! Soft sand and pristine waters make Delray’s beaches some of the best along the eastern coastline. 

Delray Municipal Beach is one of the most favored beaches visited for sunbathing and water sports. Cabanas, beach chairs, and umbrellas are available for rental use while you’re visiting the beach.

For a serene beach experience visit Atlantic Dunes Park , surrounded in an elevated wooded area. Go for a walk on the boardwalk and admire the scenery on the 300-foot nature trail. At Atlantic Dunes there is a covered pavilion, picnic tables, and restrooms on-site. 

Home of the Ocean Rescue Division Headquarters is located at Anchor Park. This beach has more convenient facilities than the others such as grills, a community park, picnic areas, restrooms, and vending machines for families. 

Saltwater Brewery

Grab a microbrew after playing in the water at Saltwater Brewery , a favorite spot for the locals to hang out. Brews are all handcrafted and only natural ingredients are used. 

Saturday afternoons guided tours of the facility are given. However, make sure to arrive early to catch a tour because spots fill up quickly.

Delray Beach Market

Visit Florida’s largest food hall Delray Beach Market spanning over 150,00 square feet.  Arrive hungry and get a taste of Delray Beach with more than 25 different local and regional vendors and pop-ups to choose from in this 4-story warehouse.

Ride bikes 

A great way to explore this resort town is by bicycle, it’s one of the fun things to do in Delray Beach for those who like to be active when traveling. 

Renting a bicycle makes it a little easier to get around to places that may be too far on foot. Opting for a bicycle is convenient too for avoiding the hassle of parking and paying for meters.

Cornell Art Museum

Once an Elementary school built in 1913, Cornell Art Museum turned into a home to house contemporary artwork from artists known worldwide.

How To Get To Delray Beach

Getting to Delray Beach can be done by car or plane, depending on your departure location will help you determine the most convenient form of transportation to arrive there. 

If you are taking a quick trip during your visit from Miami or Fort Lauderdale you can arrive at Delray Beach by car in under an hour. 

Driving from Key West will take you around 4 hours if traffic permits.

Coming from the West coast near Naples expect to arrive around 2 hours by car in good traffic conditions.

If arriving by plane, the closest airport to Delray Beach is the West Palm Beach Airport. Other airports you can arrive at are Fort Lauderdale or Miami. however, coming by plane you will need to arrange transportation to get to Delray Beach by a hired driver or renting a car.

When To Visit Delray Beach

South Florida has warm climate year-round making it a perfect destination to visit any time. Florida has seasons and costs for activities and hotels do fluctuate depending on when you plan to arrive.

December to mid-April is high is South Florida’s cooler season. Expect more tolerable temperatures and less humidity. These months are South Florida’s high season and hotel prices tend to be more expensive. 

Low season runs from June through November. Highs reach the upper 90°s and the humidity can be unbearable at times. Hotels prices are cheaper, but hurricanes or heavy rain may interrupt your trip. Be sure to bring your umbrella. 

Where To Stay In Delray Beach

Delray Beach has hotels for both budget and luxury travel. Searching for hotels during my day trips to Delray Beach I always use booking.com. When booking considers selecting a hotel near or on Atlantic Avenue. Most shops and restaurants are located within walking distance.

How To Get Around Delray

Delray Beach is small making it easy to get around fairly quickly. Depending where you are staying you can get around easily by foot. Even though it may be a tiny town you will need wheels to get to some places. 

You can get around Delray Beach by car easily. Parking never seemed to be an issue during my visits. Keep in mind depending on the day of the week and time parking may not be full on Atlantic Avenue. However, there are plenty of parking lots available one block off downtown. 

My favorite way to get around for things to do in Delray Beach is by bicycle. You will find this town to be extremely bicycle friendly. 

At Need A Bike they are one of the cheapest in the area and they will happily deliver and pick up your bicycle from wherever you’re staying.

Beach bar-hopping: New oceanfront bar opens, 2 others named ‘best’ in The South

There’s a brand-new beach bar in Palm Beach County , and it has something many beach bars don’t have: an actual beach location. The new Top Shell bar, which sits a few steps away from the beach on Singer Island, has been in soft-opening mode since Wednesday, March 20.  

Top Shell, which took over the space most recently occupied by Coconuts on the Beach, is part of the newly rebranded Singer Oceanfront Resort. The resort, now part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, is expected to debut in late March, after a multimillion-dollar makeover. 

The Top Shell beach bar, which is open to the public and takes its name in tribute to Singer Island’s sea turtles, offers a full cocktail bar and Florida-inspired pub bites. 

The beachy menu items include blue crab fritters with chipotle aioli and a seafood “charcuterie” board that includes smoked salmon, pickled shrimp and fish dip. Complete the bar-in-paradise vibe with a rum-pineapple-coconut-cream cocktail that’s served in a whole coconut. It’s called “Top of the Tree”.

Some menu items may not be available, as the bar operates on a limited menu during its soft-opening phase. But a rep for the resort says “the full concept and menu will be available shortly.”

Speaking of beach bars…

Southern Living just released a list it calls “ The 18 Best Beach Bars in The South, ” selected by the magazine’s editors. Eight of the bars are in Florida, two of them Palm Beach County favorites.  

Sandbar, Delray Beach

The oceanfront Sandbar , part of the Boston’s on the Beach family, made the “best” list for location and vibe. The open-air spot offers a full beach-bar experience by day — tiki hut on the sand, fruity rum drinks, fish dip and Bahamian conch fritters for nibbling, a menu that lists “frozen concoctions” that include a Tropical Storm daiquiri, plus the scent of suntan lotion in the ocean breeze. Cue your Kenny Chesney playlist.

After sundown, the place revs up into nightclub mode. Think live DJs and bottle service by moonlight.

The Square Grouper Tiki Bar, Jupiter

The rustic, Jupiter Inlet bar made famous by Alan Jackson’s 2003 video for “Five O’Clock Somewhere” (starring Jimmy Buffett) is about as iconic as the Jupiter Lighthouse that stands just across the inlet waters. 

If you’ve seen the video, the place is easy to recognize, “even if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of sipping something tall and strong at this palm tree-blessed waterfront hangout,” writes Southern Living’s Marisa Spyker in describing The Square Grouper.

More upscale spots with lighthouse views have opened in recent years, but the funky Square Grouper offers those views with one of the most beachy settings on the inlet. Also, pets are not welcome.

Something to know before you go: You must be at least 21 and prepared to show a valid ID to visit the place, and the only foreign ID accepted there is a valid passport.
