By: MJ Gonzales | Gogagah

Definitely, touring around in the province of Ilocos is well worth because of the interesting spots you‘ll enjoy. In the town of Burgos and Bangui alone, you’ll see the famous windmill, dragon fruit plantation, Kapurpurawan rock formation, and Cape Bojeadora, which are not far from each other.

Rustic Lighthouse, Cape Bojeador

Cape Bojeador was designed by Magin Pers y Pers in 1887 and Engr. Guillermo Brockman continued managing it till 1890.  These days, it’s very rare that this lighthouse is open for the public or perhaps, it already closed. When I luckily got the chance to go inside, its interior was already old and rustic. However it still useful even its operation started in 1892.  Cape Bojeador was declared National Historical Landmark on Agosto 13, 2004 and National Cultural Treasure on Hunyo 20, 2005.

Biggest and first Dragon Fruit Plantation in the North

The Dragon Fruit plantation or REFMAD-V Farm, owned by Mrs. Edita Dacuycuy, is the biggest in the north with its 13-hectare size. Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

Unlike the Cape and Dragon Fruit, there’s entrance fee in Kapurpurawan Rock Formation. But it’s nothing compare to paradise-like view you’ll see. The rock formation and entire shore is beyond beautiful that its cool venue for photo shoots. It’s one of the shooting places of 2012 hit movie “Si Agimat, si Enteng Kabisote at si Ako” of Sen. Though Bangui Windmill or wind farm is not part of Burgos, it also tempting to go there. The farm is actually the first thing that capture you attention with 50-meter towering heights of each 15 windmill.

The timeless architecture of Paoay Church emphasizes the Baroque style, characterized by its massive 24 buttresses displaying on its sides.

Likewise, its facade’s solid coral rocks and bricks are a testament to the olden construction methodology’s resourcefulness.

On the other hand, the detached bell tower has played an essential part in Ilocos Norte’s history. This three-story structure was used as a watchtower for Katipuneros during the Spanish era and by the Filipino guerrillas during the Japanese occupation of World War II.

Completion of the original building dates back to 1710. After almost three centuries of its existence, NHCP completed the conservation of its exterior in June 2020.

The Kapurpurawan rock formation also catches the attention of tourists with its white canvas-like facade

The coastal views of Ilocos Norte are genuinely unique in most cases. Like in the town of Burgos, you can spot the Kapurpurawan rock formation.

This geological rock formation protruding along the beach keeps tourists in awe because of its white surface.

Its name comes from the Ilocano word puraw, meaning white. Meanwhile, its unique shape and color are the result of weathering and oceanic waves.

Getting close to the rock itself requires some trekking from the drop-off point near the highway. Then you have to walk for a while or ride a horse for a small fee.

The beach here, however, is not suitable for swimming and any other water activities.

The sinking bell tower is quick to spot near the busy streets of Laoag. Just a few steps from the Laoag Church, this bell tower still rings the bell every Sunday.

Now, stalls have sprung near the tower, obstructing its view. However, you can wait for this Ilocos Norte tourist spot to light up during the night for a dramatic perspective view.

The deck’s view offers a unique viewing platform overlooking the ocean from one side and the mountains on the other side.

At a very minimal entrance fee, you can learn more about its construction in the 1890s and how it was challenging during the Luzon earthquake in 1990. You’ll hear some unique stories from the guides for every room too.

Burgos Wind Farm: One of the Most Scenic Spots in Ilocos Norte

Today, we’ll be sharing one of our favorite tourist spots in Ilocos Norte – the Burgos Wind Farm. We visited here during a 2-day tour around Ilocos provinces. I love how beautiful the wind farm is, and every corner just begs for a photograph!

What’s more surprising is that it isn’t as talked about as the Bangui Wind Mills, also in Ilocos Norte. Well, let’s change that, shall we?

About the Burgos Wind Farm

Burgos wind farm – the perfect selfie spot, how to get to burgos wind farm, reminders and tips, what to read next:.

Burgos Wind Farm in Ilocos Norte

The Burgos Wind Farm is a sustainable energy project located at Ilocos Norte. Spanning over 600 hectares of rolling hills and coastal plains across three barangays in the town of Burgos, the Burgos Wind Farm is considered the largest wind farm in the Philippines and one of the largest in Southeast Asia.

It consists of 50 gigantic Vestas turbines, each 230 feet tall with massive, 150-foot-long blades that harness the kinetic energy of the wind and convert it into electricity through a generator housed at the top of the turbine tower.

The wind farm generates about 370GWh of electricity a year, powering more than 2 million households. By doing so, it also avoids 200,000 tons of carbon emissions annually.

Aside from providing clean, sustainable energy, the wind farm also provides a source of income for landowners who lease their properties for wind turbine installations. Additionally, it attracts tourists from all over the country!

Owned by EDC, the Burgos Wind Farm was commissioned in 2014 and represents a significant milestone in the Philippines’ efforts toward a more sustainable, eco-friendly energy future.

As a tourist, I love learning about sustainable projects and at the same time I loved our visit here. Burgos Wind Farm is indeed the perfect selfie spot, where you can take photos with the wind turbines and the rugged coastline at the perfect.

However, for those who would want a various mode of transportation or for backpackers  who are traveling alone or with just one companion, the following might be of great help:

  • PRIVATE CARS & VANS. You can book a van or a private car through your hotel. The average price is P3,500.00 for the whole day, inclusive of a private chauffeur.
  • BUS. Prices vary, although bus owners usually collect a fee between  P25.00-P60.00 per passenger for an ordinary bus depending on the destination and a minimum of P50.00 for air-conditioned buses.

To avoid any misunderstanding, we recommend that you and the driver agree on the fare before embarking on the journey.

WHAT TO EAT WHEN IN ILOCOS NORTE

Food forms a significant factor in one’s experience especially if you are visiting the place for the first time. As a traveler, I am not particular about the location or the ambiance, but what I am usually looking for is the authenticity of the taste. Each time I travel, I would want to try something that also tells about the culture of the place.

I have listed below, Ilocano food which I genuinely like.

Long before I visited Ilocos, I have read a lot of articles about Ilocos’ bagnet. I tried this bagnet on my first meal at Ilocos, and I didn’t regret.  The secret of making the Ilocos Bagnet is the slowly deep-frying of pork meat usually in slabs in a low-medium fire. The pork is usually marinated overnight with some natural spices available in the area.

Dinardaran (Crispy Dinuguan)

Another personal favorite that you must try when visiting Ilocos Norte is the Dinardaraan. Dinardaran is the Ilocano term for dinuguan or blood stew.   I don’t know if this is true to all Dinardaran, but what I tried was the version that has crisp in it, which for me is a nice twist considering that it gives the food a different texture. For this dish, they usually use large intestines and a bit of pork loin and pork fat, deep-fried until they are crunchy.

Poqui poqui is a local vegetable Ilocano dish using the eggplant as the main ingredient. Poqui-poqui is a grilled eggplant, peeled, then sauteed with lots of onions, tomatoes, and eggs.

A perfect pair maybe for bagnet is the pinakbet. This vegetable dish uses mainly the ampalaya or bitter melon, eggplant, okra, and string beans. For an added flavor they add some pork and fish sauce.

Perfect as a snack or even as a complete meal. The empanada in Ilocos is one thing which you must try when visiting the Province. The main ingredients for empanada include rice flour for the crust with achuete (for the color); whole egg and mongo sprout or parboiled mongo or grated green papaya for regular orders. Sometimes, Ilocos’ longanisa is added for the filling. Empanada is best when dipped in spicy vinegar.

I was intrigued the first time I saw the tinubong which leads me to try it. Tinubong is a delicacy that is very popular in the entire Ilocos Region. The name of this delicacy is derived from its container, an internode of buho (bulo in Ilocano) with the node at one end, which is called tubong in Ilocano. This native delicacy is made of grounded glutinous rice, sugar, coconut milk, and some coconut meat. These ingredients are being placed in its container (tubong) then steamed. This delicacy can be served as a dessert or as a snack.

Isabel suites

I have stayed in two hotels when I visited Ilocos Norte. I can’t remember anymore the name of the other hotel because I don’t intend to recommend it. It was a 5 story hotel without an elevator, so I’m sure you won’t be happy being there. The first hotel which I stayed overnight and the one I stayed on my last night in my entire Ilocos visit was the Isabel Suites. This hotel has 2 buildings (new and old) facing each other. Located at the heart of the city, Isabel suites offer a nice room at a reasonable price with free wifi. [ Ilocos Norte Tourist Spots + Itinerary, Hotels ]

burgos ilocos norte tourist spots

ILOCOS NORTE’S GEMS: Burgos, Bangui, Pagudpud

The three northermost part of Ilocos Norte are the three coastal towns of Burgos, Bangui, and Pagudpud. All three towns are surrounded by mountains and verdant hills.

From Laoag City, Burgos is the first town to arrive among the three. The town was originally known as Nagparitan and was renamed to Burgos in 1914 in honor of the martyred priest Fr. Jose Burgos, who was born in the region.

Burgos is endowed with scenic spots that attract tourists. From their majestic white beaches to their rugged cliffs and digging falls, this town is indeed blessed with a natural beauty. Among the rugged cliffs in the area, Kapurpurawan Rock Formation is by far the best (for me). Kapurpurawan is derived from the Ilokano word “puraw” which means white.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

Another famous destination in this town is the historic Cape Bojeador . It is a 66-foot-tall octagonal stone tower that stood on top of a hill. This is one of the best spots to have a view of the vast China Sea and the rugged shores of Burgos.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

Only a few minutes away from Burgos is the town of Bangui. This is another small town where the windmill farm is located. The area is very suitable for building wind turbines because it is near the Asia-Pacific monsoon belt. In 1990 Former President Ferdinand Marcos pursued the project of a power plant in this town in order to resolve the power supply shortage in the province. At the moment there are 15 wind turbines that produces 40% power supply in Ilocos Norte. According to the locals, more wind turbines will be built in the coming years to suffice the whole province’s need for power supply.

bangui windmills

Pagudpud is the northernmost part of Ilocos Norte. It is originally part of the Municipality of Bangui but became an official independent municipality in 1959 through the executive order issused by President Carlos P. Garcia. If you love beaches, you will be mesmerized with Pagudpud’s natural beauty. With too many resorts to choose from, you will never run out of choices. Although we stayed at Terra Rika Beach Resort, I highly recommend Hannah’s Beach resort for your overnight stay. They offer higher room rates compared to other resorts but is definitely worth it. If you like adventure, they offer ATV rides and open water zipline. Terra Rika beach resort is also nice, and offers cheaper accomodation.

1. paoay church.

The Saint Augustine Church, commonly known as the Paoay Church, is the Roman Catholic church of the municipality of Paoay, Ilocos Norte in the Philippines. 3. BACARRA DOMELESS TOWER

Bacarra Church is a Roman Catholic church located in the municipality of Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, Philippines under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Laoag. The church was founded by the Augustinians, who dedicated it to St. Andrew.

The Bacarra church is famous for its centuries-old, domeless or “beheaded” belfry known as  Torre ti Bacarra .  The structure stands three stories and 50 metres (160 ft) high.

4. MALACAÑANG OF THE NORTH

Malacanang Ti Amianan, or also commonly called as Malacañang of the North, is a presidential museum in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. It was the residence of the family of Ferdinand Marcos when he was the President of the Philippines.

It is a two-story mansion overlooking the Paoay Lake, and consists of seven (supposedly a lucky number for Marcos) rooms, with each room having a theme of historical events from the Marcos era: Study, Agriculture, Diplomacy, OFW (overseas Filipino workers), Culture, Nation Building and Family. 5. JUAN LUNA SHRINE

Located in Badoc Ilocos Norte, Juan Luna Shrine is the reconstruction of Juan Luna’s home. It is a 2-storey house that was said to be burned down around 1861 but fortunately enough, the ruins that remained made it possible to be reconstructed and made it into the Shrine that it is now.

There are collections and displays all over the house where you’ll get to know not just Juan Luna, but also his brother, Antonio Luna as well.
