Now back to telling you about how to get from Taipei to Taichung!

Taipei 101

Option One: Taking the High-Speed Train from Taipei to Taichung

The high-speed train (HSR) is the fastest and most convenient way to get around Taiwan. It is fast, clean, efficient, and comfortable.

The only problem is that is it also the most expensive way to travel through Taiwan. You’re definitely paying for the convenience of fast travel, but it can be worth it!

How Long is the HSR Ride?

It will only take you 40 to 70 minutes to get from Taipei to Taichung on the HSR!

That is about half the time of the next quickest option! Nothing comes close to competing with the HSR when it comes to speed!

How Much Does a High-Speed Rail Ticket Cost?

Ticket prices vary depending on what day of the week you’re travelling and what time of day.

You can expect a standard ticket to cost between 650 NTD and 750 NTD. Or approximately $22 USD to $25USD.

A business class ticket is going to cost you quite a bit more. They range in price from 950 NTD and 1,050 NTD. That is about $32 USD to $35 USD. But you don’t need a business class seat. The standard class seating area is quiet nice, and you’re not on the HSR for long!

Where Can You Buy HSR Tickets?

You can purchase HSR tickets one of these locations:

  • In person at the rail station
  • At a ticketing machine at the rail station
  • Online on the Taiwan High Speed Rail website

Both options work perfectly fine, but I prefer to purchase my ticket online and pick it up at the train station the day I’m travelling. It is just easier that way. You don’t have to worry about setting aside the time to ensure you’re at the train station far enough in advance to stand in line to get a ticket.

If you do purchase your ticket online, you’ll either have to print your ticket or pick it up at the station.

There are dedicated ticketing machines for people who are picking up their tickets at the station, so it doesn’t take more than a few minutes. All you need is your booking reference, and you’re good to go!

Where Does the HSR Depart from in Taipei?

You can catch the high-speed rail to Taichung at one of these three stations:

  • Taipei Main Station
  • Banqiao ( located in New Taipei City)

Most tourists will catch the train at Taipei Main Station. It is the most convenient location and tends to be the easiest for people to get to.

No matter what station you choose to depart from, be sure to follow the signs in the station to find the HSR station. The signs are easy to follow and will lead you right where you need to be!

Where Does the HSR Arrive in Taichung?

The unfortunate part of the HSR station in Taichung is that it is located in the outskirts of the town. That means you have to take the extra step of taking a separate train to get to the heart of the city.

The HSR station in Taichung is well connected, so it is easy to get from the station into town.

It is only a mild inconvenience.

You can either take the train or a bus from the HSR station into town. The New Wurih Railway Station is only a five minute walk from the HSR station, and you can board a bus directly into the heart of Taichung from there.

Alternatively, you can take a Nantou bus from the HSR station to the Taichung Railway Station in the heart of the city.

Taichung is in the process of building a metro line to the HSR station. Hopefully it is up and running soon, so we can just hop on the metro and get off downtown.

National Concert Hall Taipei, Taiwan

Pros of Taking the HSR from Taipei to Taichung

  • The trains are clean and comfortable
  • The HSR is reliable and hardly ever running late

Cons of Taking the HSR from Taipei to Taichung

  • It is fairly expensive compared to other options
  • You have to get from the HSR station to downtown by bus, train, or taxi

Option Two: Taking the Train from Taipei to Taichung

Taking the train is another great option for getting from Taipei to Taichung. It isn’t as quick as taking the HSR, but it is just as convenient.

The train is a nice combination of price, speed, and comfort. It is a great option for people looking to save a little money on transportation without sacrificing comfort or convenience!

How Long Does the Train Ride Take?

The length of your journey on the train varies a lot more than if you were to take the HSR. It depends on the time of day, what day of the week, and if the train has to stop to let faster trains/HSRs pass it on the track.

In general, you can expect the train ride from Taipei to Taichung to take anywhere between 2 hours and 3.5 hours.

That’s a pretty big difference!

I highly recommend you look at the departure and arrival times for multiple trains departing within an hour or two window of when you want to leave Taipei.

This will allow you to pick the shortest journey that fits within your price point. You may have to leave a little earlier or later than you intended to, but it could end up saving you a lot of time!

How Much Does a Train Ticket Cost?

There are two different types of trains that travel from Taipei to Taichung:

  • The local train
  • The express train

There will, of course, be a price difference between the two types of trains you can take.

The local train is slower and less expensive, and the express train is faster and more expensive.

There isn’t a huge price difference between the two types of trains. If you’re not on a super tight budget, I recommend trying to get a ticket for the express train.

You will arrive in Taichung much quicker than on the local train. The extra money you spent on the quicker train will be made up in the extra time you have in Taichung!

On average, you can expect a ticket to cost:

  • Local train: 240 NTD or approximately $8 USD
  • Express train: 375 NTD or approximately $12.50 USD

Where Can You Buy Train Tickets?

There are quite a few different places you can purchase train tickets, and they all have their pros and cons.

Here is a list of where you can purchase train tickets:

  • The Taiwan Railway Administration website
  • Through the Taiwan Railway Administration app
  • In person at the train station

I personally purchase my tickets through the app. There is an English version, and it is super straightforward and easy to use!

I like purchasing my tickets through the app because the app automatically saves my ticket to my phone, and all I have to do is scan my phone when I arrive at the platform.

There is no need for a paper ticket!

You can download tickets you purchase through the website to your phone as well. You simply enter the booking number into the app, and your ticket will appear.

Buying tickets in person is, of course, great for people who want to pay in cash and don’t want to use their credit card.

You have to arrive at the station early to get your ticket, but it is worth it if you don’t have a credit card or want to use up cash.

No matter how you choose to purchase your ticket, I suggest purchasing your ticket at least a day or two in advance. It will ensure you get a ticket on the train you want, and you have a better chance of getting your preferred seat (window or aisle).

Where Does the Train Depart Taipei?

The easiest place to catch the train from Taipei to Taichung is at Taipei Main Station .

You may be able to catch the train at other local train stations in Taipei and New Taipei City, but it depends on the train, so I wouldn’t rely on that.

If you do want to catch the train somewhere other than Taipei Main Station, make sure you use the station you want to depart from when purchasing your ticket.

This way you’ll only see trains departing from your chosen station.

Where Does the Train Arrive in Taichung?

The train from Taipei to Taichung arrive at Taichung Station .

Taichung Station is in the heart of Taichung, so it is a more convenient arriving point than the HSR station outside of town.

Once you arrive at Taichung Station, you simply find you way to wherever you’re staying. You don’t have to worry about the extra step of taking a bus or train into the city, which is really nice!

Taipei, Taiwan

Pros of Taking the Train from Taipei to Taichung

  • Less expensive than HSR
  • Arrives in the heart of the city
  • Nice blend of inexpensive price but still comfortable and convenient
  • Can buy tickets on the app

Cons of Taking the Train from Taipei to Taichung

  • Slower than the HSR
  • Have to pay attention to travel time to make sure you’re not on a super slow train

Option Three: Taking the Bus from Taipei to Taichung

The final option to get from Taipei to Taichung is by bus.

Highway buses in Taiwan are convenient and comfortable! They have nice big seats, storage under the bus for bags, and curtains to block the sun. Buses are actually quite a comfortable and stress-free way to travel in Taiwan.

The downside to taking the bus that they have to deal with traffic! You never know when you’ll hit a traffic jam, and your journey could take a lot longer than you anticipated.

How Long is the Bus Ride?

It is quite difficult to tell you exactly how long the bus ride from Taipei to Taichung is. The duration of your trip relies heavily on traffic, and that is impossible to predict.

On average, you can expect the bus ride to last anywhere from 2.5 to 3 hours.

There are ways you can try to ensure your bus ride takes as little time as possible.

This includes not travelling during rush hour and avoiding the weekend if possible. That will give you the best chance of not getting stuck in a traffic jam.

How Much Does a Bus Ticket Cost?

The bus is the least expensive transportation option and is perfect for people who count every penny!

A bus ticket will normally cost between 200 NTD (approximately $7 USD) and 275 NTD (about $9 USD).

As you can see, the least expensive ticket price isn’t much cheaper than the least expensive train ticket price, but there is a bigger difference between the more expensive tickets.

You should take the time to price out the train and bus options if you’re on a budget. There may not be a huge difference between the cost.

Where Can You Buy Bus Tickets?

Bus tickets are purchased at the bus station.

Sometimes there is ticket window where you purchase your ticket and sometimes you purchase your ticket directly from the driver.

You should be able to figure out the protocol when you arrive at the bus station, but if you’re unsure, you can ask any bus station employee, and they’ll be able to help you out!

Where Does the Bus Depart Taipei?

Buses from Taipei to Taichung depart from the Taipei Bus Station .

The bus station is connected to Taipei Main Station. You simply follow the signs inside the station, and you’ll arrive at the bus station!

Where Does the Bus Arrive in Taichung?

The bus arrives at Taichung Station .

Basically, the bus departs and arrives at the same stations as the train. Obviously, the buses depart from a parking lot outside the stations, but you’ll easily be able to find the bus station if once you get to Taipei Main Station or Taichung Station.

Temple in Taipei, Taiwan

Pros of Taking the Bus from Taipei to Taichung

  • The least expensive option
  • Comfortable
  • Has storage under the bus, so you don’t have to worry about lifting bags overhead to store

Cons of Taking the Bus from Taipei to Taichung

  • The length of the trip relies on traffic and could take much longer than anticipated
  • Can’t get up and walk around like on the train or HSR
  • Purchasing a ticket isn’t as convenient as other options

Other Ways to Travel from Taipei to Taichung

There are a number of other ways you can travel from Taipei to Taichung. I didn’t go in depth for these options because most people won’t use these methods, but I wanted to include them quickly.

  • Driving yourself (car or scooter)
  • Taking a chartered bus/limousine bus

My Recommendation

It is difficult to give a firm recommendation on how to get from Taipei to Taichung.

If I were travelling between the two cities, this is the process I would go through to decide what transportation method I wanted to use:

  • Check to see if I could get an express train that takes under 2 hours to get from Taipei to Taichung for under 350 NTD (approximately $12 USD).
  • If I can’t get a quick train to Taichung for under 350 NTD, then I would explore the HSR options.
  • I would compare the journey length to the ticket price and decide what I felt was the best for me balancing both cost and time.

In all likelihood, 9 times out of 10, I would probably take the train rather than the HSR.

For me, it is worth saving a little bit of money and having a slightly longer journey time than it is to pay the extra price for an HSR ticket.

But it might be different for you.

If you’re only in Taiwan for a very short period of time or are only visiting Taichung for the day, then the HSR is probably your best option.

The only option I’m weary of and don’t really recommend is the bus. I don’t like having my journey time depend on traffic when there is a comparable option for basically the same price.

National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall

There isn’t really a wrong way to travel from Taipei to Taichung. Each transportation method is suited for different people with different needs.

The easiest way to get from Taipei to Taichung is definitely taking the HSR or train. It takes a lot of the unknown out of the journey.

Plus you get a much nicer view from the train/HSR than the bus. Who wants to be looking at cars when you could be looking at nature?!

No matter how you decide to travel from Taipei to Taichung, it is well worth the trip! Taichung is a beautiful city that you should add to your Taiwan itinerary!

You won’t regret it!

Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) from Taipei to Taichung

I was sad to leave Hualien because I had grown attached to it after only a few days. But we had to continue on our journey, this time to Taichung. The night before, I texted the local taxi company via LINE to arrange for a taxi pickup to the Hualien train station the next morning. It was quoted at NT$100, the same as the flag down fare for the first 1km, so there didn’t appear to be any additional booking fee. The taxi arrived on time, and the friendly driver even assisted us with our luggage. Excellent service.

Note: You can book a taxi in advance by calling or texting 國聲計程車行 (0800-337-337) or 全家計程車行 (0800-255-255). They will provide you with a quote based on the distance between the two points of travel. In Hualien, there is no Uber or Grab.

Goodbye Hualien!

I won’t go into detail about taking the TRA train back to Taipei. You can read my previous blog post “ Taking The Train From Taipei To Hualien And Savouring The Railway Bentos ” to learn more about the ticketing, ticket collection, and other processes.

In this post, I’ll talk about our trip on the High Speed Rail from Taipei to Taichung.

Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) 台灣高鐵

Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) is Taiwan’s high-speed railway system, consisting of a single line that runs approximately 350 kilometres (220 miles) along the west coast from Taipei to the southern city of Kaohsiung.

travelling from taipei to taichung

Image source: Taiwan High Speed Rail website

The High Speed Rail does not operate on the east coast so the quickest way to Taichung is to take the TRA train back to Taipei and then the HSR to Taichung from there.

Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) from Taipei to Taichung

HSR Ticket vending machines at Taipei Station

Tickets can be purchased at any THSR station (via ticket office or ticket vending machine) or convenience store (7-Eleven, Family Mart, Hi-Life and OK mart).

You can also book your tickets through the Taiwan High Speed Rail website , 29 days up to 1 hour prior to scheduled time of departure.

Do note that seats are automatically assigned by the system.

Ticket collection

To collect your tickets, you will need the booking ID and reservation number. Tickets can be collected from partnering convenience stores, T Express, ticket office, and ticket vending machines at any THSR station.

It’s best to use the app

I strongly recommend you to book your tickets using the T Express App, as you can also use the app to download the ticket in the form of a QR code, which you can easily scan to pass through the clearance. This is the most convenient option because no tickets need to be collected separately.

T Express can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store .

Save money by booking early

One way fare from Taipei to Taichung is NT$700 per person.

The HSR runs frequently, about 5-7 trips per hour, giving you a wide range of timing options. Certain dates and times are eligible for early bird discounts; expect to save 10%, 20%, or 35%. The earlier you book, the better your chance of receiving the 35% off early bird discount.

When we arrived at Taipei Main Station, we had about 1.5 hours before our departure to Taichung. I booked the HSR at a later time to give us more time, but it turned out that it wasn’t necessary because the trains in Taiwan are very punctual. Before boarding the HSR, 30 minutes would be sufficient to purchase food & drinks, use the restroom, etc. For example, if your arrival time in Taipei is 10.00am, you can book a 10.30am HSR to Taichung.

We saw a Family Mart along the way and stopped for some oden. Surprisingly good! Very cheap too!

We had to take a local train to Taichung TRA Station to get to the city’s central district. And then we’d make our way to our hotel, about which I’ll tell you more in the next post. 🙂

How do I get from Taipei Airport to Taichung City: 4 Easy Ways!

travelling from taipei to taichung

Most visitors to Taichung will find themselves flying into Taipei Airport, and if you are one of them, you will want to know the fastest and easiest way to get from Taipei Airport to Taichung City.

As Taichung sits somewhere in the middle of a 394km long island, it does take some effort getting there. The good thing is that inter-city transport in Taiwan is quiet well constructed, meaning you can transfer from one city to another pretty easily and in comfort too.

So we made this guide to show you the various ways to do that, how much it will cost, as well as how long it will take you. Check out the table below for a summary, and read on for the details.

What's covered in this post

How far is Taichung from Taipei Airport?

Terminals in taoyuan airport, 1. by taiwan high speed rail (thsr), 3. by taxi or car app, 4. by car rental, logistics before visiting taichung taiwan.

The distance from Taipei Taoyuan Aiport to Taichung City centre is approximately 148km.

There are 2 terminals in Taoyuan Aiport, with Terminal 1 being the smaller sized and older terminal. Both terminals serve international flights, but it is more likely that you will arrive in the newer and larger Terminal 2.

If somehow you have a need to transfer between the 2 terminals, there is a free Skytrain service that runs from 6am to 12am daily. You just need to follow the well placed signs to locate it.

If you prefer taking the free shuttle bus, you can do so by following the signs to the bus station located right outside the terminals.

Ways to get from Taipei Airport to Taichung City

The THSR (bullet train, modeled after the Japanese Shinkansen) was built in 2007 to connect the northern part of the island with the southern end. This meant a lot to travelling within Taiwan, as you can now get from tip to tip in less than 2 hours!

taiwan-high-speed-rail

If you wish to take the THSR to get from Taipei to Taichung, you will first need to get to the train station. Unfortunately, there isn’t a THSR station within the airport, so you will need to get to the nearest one at Taoyuan HSR station.

To get from the airport to the HSR station, you will need to use the MRT (metro service) to arrive at Taoyuan MRT, where you will make a transfer to get on the HSR.

From Taoyuan HSR, take the bullet train to Taichung city.

Once you arrive in Taichung city, you will need to take a bus or taxi to get to your hotel since there is currently NO metro service in Taichung. It is slated to open by the end of 2020.

While this method may be the fastest, do bear in mind the cost as well as the need to transfer twice. So it might not be such a great idea if you are lugging around big bags.

  • Time needed: 1 hour
  • Cost: NT$35 (MRT) + NT$540 (THSR) = NT$575 per person

Recommended:  How to get from Taipei to Jiufen: All Methods in Detail

There are 2 bus companies that you can use at Taoyuan Aiport to get to Taichung, namely Kuo-Kuang Motor Transport and UBUS. Please take note that Free Go Bus is no longer available.

kuo-kuang-bus

Both lines run on different routes, but that should not make much of a difference to you unless you intend to make a pitstop somewhere. Both lines pass through townships and make use of freeways, so don’t expect too much of sceneries.

  • Time needed: 2 hours 10 minutes
  • Cost: NT$280 per person

If you are travelling in a group of 4 and not carrying much luggage, this might be a good option to consider. Taxi service is readily available at the both airport terminals.

Taking a taxi can cost quite a fair bit, but do know how much is the taxi fare from Taipei Airport to Taichung?

It will set you back approximately NT$5000, so you need to consider this huge expense before opting for taxi service. The total time taken is roughly 2 hours, but this is highly dependant on traffic conditions. An advantage though is that you can reach your destination directly without any transfers.

However, we found a way better method to get to Taichung cheaply from Taipei!

Our recommendation is to use Tripool . For 4 persons, they will arrange a 9 seater (!) van so that you can travel in comfort and style! The best part is it cost less than NT$3000. If you are travelling light, they will arrange a SUV MPV, which costs less than NT$2200.

The only drawbacks are that they operate from 6am to 10pm only and only accepts credit card.

  • Time needed: 2 hours
  • Cost: ~NT$5000 per taxi; ~NT$2200 per Tripool ride

We love road trips , but this is a great opportunity to embark on one since Taiwan has great roads to drive on and the conditions are excellent. Driving from Taipei to Taichung is pretty straightforward, and takes about 2 hours to get there.

The best part is that you can always decide to stop by a random town to explore or maybe venture out to an undiscovered spot for some photos.

Renting a car from the airport is very easy, and you should actually pre-book online first. We typically use Rentalcars.com as they offer some of the most competitive rates online and we like the option to include full insurance at reasonable rates. We simply hate it when renting directly from car companies (Sixt, Hertz etc) as they charge an arm and a leg for insurance.

Do take note you will need an International Driving Permit, and Taiwan drives on the right (same as USA).

  • Cost: NT2100 per day excluding petrol and other related expenses

Recommended:  Road Trip Food List: Stop Eating Junk Food Each Time!

As you can see, there are a number of transport methods for you to get from Taipei Airport to Taichung City. The main thing to balance is the time you have and the budget you intend to set aside for this.

How To Get From Taipei To Taichung Easily

How To Get From Taipei To Taichung Easily

We had spent six weeks in Taipei and loved every minute but it was time to see the rest of Taiwan. This post will provide a handy guide for anyone wondering how to travel from Taipei to Taichung . It should also hopefully be helpful for anyone travelling from Taichung to Taipei.

If you are at all apprehensive about travelling between Taipei and Taichung, don't be. It is incredibly simple 🙂

travelling from taipei to taichung

Now the time to depart Taipei had arrived, we packed our bags, said goodbye to the sugar gliders we had been looking after for the previous five weeks, took our last walk down the hill past the Beitou Hot Springs and headed to Taipei Main Station to catch the train from Taipei to Taichung.

Purchasing Tickets At Taipei Main Station

There isn't really a need to pre-purchase your train tickets from Taipei to Taichung unless it is the day before or the day of a holiday. If you will be traveling on one of these days, you can buy your tickets online via this web page . We haven't used it so we are unable to tell you if it is easy to use or not.

travelling from taipei to taichung

Buying tickets in person at Taipei Main Station is quite painless. You can use the ticket machines that do have some English instructions and buy either standing or seated tickets. Figuring them out can be a little confusing. Alternatively you can head to the ticket booth and speak to a real person like we ultimately did. We chatted with a lovely man who spoke brilliant English and he handed us two tickets from Taipei to Taichung.

Our train was leaving at 10:30 am and would arrive at 12:51 pm. Just under two and a half hours of comfortable travel. Our seats were even next to each other. You would be surprised how often we have come across people who seem to be unaware that we would like to sit next to each other.

The tickets cost NTD $375 each. Here is the Taiwan TRA Train Schedule Website in English. Please note that there are options to purchase 3, 5, 7, 10 day multi-use TRA train passes. The 3 and 5 day options are only available for adults. The 7 and 10 day passes are available for students or teachers with specific ID.

We do not have a lot of information about the multi-day options as these are for people travelling very quickly around the island. For example, the 3 day pass has to be used within three consecutive days. They may make sense if you will be travelling every day but they did not work for us as we were not planning on moving every day.

Using The Ticket Machines At Taipei TRA Station

Our Experience Onboard

Heaps Of Room For Us And Our Bags On The Train

The train was exceptionally comfortable. Admittedly we are pretty light travellers but there was plenty of room for our bags without feeling squished.

travelling from taipei to taichung

A few tears were shed as we left Taipei so we consoled ourselves by munching on a delicious pork bentobox. For NTD $80 we shared this meal of spicy pork chop, soy flavoured egg, steamed and fried vegetables, ham slice, fried fish and rice. Even though we could have eaten one of these each, one is enough for two people as a snack.

By the end of the relaxing trip aboard the Taipei to Taichung train Andrew and I were both excited to arrive. The combination of a comfortable seat, some tasty snacks and ever changing scenery meant that the trip flew by and now we had a whole new Taiwanese city to explore! First matter of business, our first Taichung Bubble Tea.

Travel Tips

Beware of national holidays.

Different countries have different holidays and travelling on or immediately before the whole country takes a vacation tends to be a bad idea. Google “taiwan national holidays” for an up to date list.

Consider a Lightweight Stroller

If you will have a baby or young child with you consider taking a travel stroller. Taipei in particular is generally very stroller friendly. We have personally used and recommend both the Babyzen Yoyo and the GB Pockit Stroller. Click here to read our stroller reviews .

Where To Stay In Taipei

We house sat for most of our time in Taipei. However after completing our two week tour of Taiwan we did spend a few days at the Taipei Triple Tiger Hostel. The rooms are rather cozy but they are in the fashionable and extremely central district of Ximen. Click here to get current prices and click here to read our review .

Where To Stay In Taichung

We stayed at a place called Moonlight House Fengjia. Apologies for this but we can now find very little about this place online. If it still exists and if you stay there be aware that you need to go into what looks like a place that makes keys to check in and get your room key. There are no outward signs that its a hotel. Yeah, its weird. Click here to search for somewhere else to stay in Taichung . We <3 Taiwan!

The Ultimate Taichung Itinerary for 1-3 days

Wondering what to do in Taichung? Follow my detailed Taichung itinerary for 1-3 days to discover all of Taichung’s best bits!

Taichung (台中市) is a beautiful, laid-back city located in central Taiwan and also the main gateway to one of the country’s most revered natural wonders,  Sun Moon Lake . While most people rush through Taichung rather quickly to visit dreamy Sun Moon Lake, a few days’ stay in Taiwan’s second-largest city should not be overlooked.

Since Taichung packs the perfect mix of art, culture, history, and nature within easy reach, it’s a great city to experience a different slice of Taiwan. In this Taichung itinerary, I’ll cover the best things to do in Taichung for 1, 2 or 3 days. There will be opportunities to see the city’s top attractions, discover its most instagrammable gems, relax in its green spaces, and explore its beautiful outskirts.

Ready to find out what to do in Taichung? Read along to discover the best of Taichung in my detailed Taichung itinerary!

Taichung Itinerary Pre-Travel Tips

Before diving into this Taichung itinerary for one day or more, here are a few pre-travel tips to help you plan the perfect trip.

  • Search the  best hotels and hostels in Taichung . There’s not much need to book accommodation in advance, unless you’re visiting during Chinese New Year or other special holidays. (See all my hotel recommendations below).
  • Book a seat on the high-speed rail to access Taichung quickly and easily. Download the THSR app to easily check schedules and book tickets. This guide on top Taiwan travel apps will also come in handy.
  • Make sure you grab a  4G Sim card  or  pocket WiFi   for pickup at the airport. This way you can access maps, translations, and much more on the go.
  • Grab an Easy Card , Taiwan’s local transit card. By doing so you can use the free bus system in Taichung (up to 10km).
  • This tour  is a great way to see all of the city’s highlights if you’re traveling in a group or not comfortable navigating Taichung’s public transport.
  • You may need a travel plug when visiting Taiwan. The standard voltage in Taiwan is 110V with a frequency of 60Hz. The most common plug types are A and B.
  • Like the rest of Taiwan, Taichung is an exceptionally safe city to visit — even for solo female travelers. Unfortunately, things can and do go wrong when you travel. My go-to travel insurance provider is SafetyWing .

How to Get to Taichung

Taichung is easily accessed by plane, bus, high-speed rail, or train across Taiwan. Along with the tips in my guide on getting from Taipei to Taichung , here are the best ways to access the city.

Taichung International Airport is the main airport in Taichung and located 25 km from the city center. If you are arriving in Taichung straight from the airport, you can access the center by bus (#302 or #9). Alternatively grab a taxi.

Headed to Penghu after your Taichung tour? Read my detailed guides on how to get to Penghu and what to do in Penghu .

By High-Speed Rail

The easiest and fastest way to get to Taichung is by high-speed rail. Depending on your departure point, it shouldn’t take more than 1 hour to reach the city. Make sure to  book a discounted HSR ticket online  in advance to guarantee a seat. Non-reserved tickets go for slightly lower prices, but you run the risk of not having a place to sit.

Insider Tip: If you plan on only visiting Taichung for 1 day, the Taiwan Pass offers unlimited rides on the HSR for 3 days and is an excellent option to help you travel onwards.

It’s easy to take a bus from elsewhere in Taiwan to reach Taichung. Many buses depart from Taipei Main Bus Station (near Taipei Main Station) daily. The bus ride from Taipei to Taichung takes about 2-3 hours. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative and don’t mind a slightly longer journey. See the Ubus  schedule here .

If you’ve just arrived at Taoyuan Airport and want to skip  Taipei  altogether and head straight to Taichung, that is possible too. The bus terminal is located on B1, and from here, you can catch a bus directly to Taichung.  Book a discounted seat on the bus here  to guarantee a spot. Alternatively,  book a private transfer directly from Taoyuan  for the most convenient way to access the city.

You can also take the local train (TRA) to Taichung. Prices are considerably cheaper than the HSR, but it can take much longer, depending on the train you take. Make sure to get on a  Puyuma and Taroko train , which will get you to the city faster. Tze-Chiang Express trains are cheaper, but take slightly longer to reach the city.

Taichung is packed with hidden gems and old historic buildings

How to Get Around During Your Taichung Itinerary

Taichung is a big city and quite spread out. While it’s possible to explore the city center on foot, you’ll need to rely on public transport further afield.

  • Scooter: The easiest way to get around Taichung hassle-free and explore the city at your own pace is by scooter . There is a scooter rental shop, a 2-minute walk away from the HSR station. Alternatively,  book a scooter rental online . You will however need a valid international driver’s license for a motorcycle to do so. It’s also a good idea to make sure you have decent travel insurance .
  • MRT: While the  subway  is still under construction, the Green Line is fully functional. The route runs from Taichung HSR Station to Beitun Main Station. See the MRT map here .
  • Bus: Taichung also has an   extensive bus network  that offers free rides up to 10km. To use the free bus service, remember to grab an Easy Card  in advance.
  • Bike: YouBike  is also widely available in Taichung, and it’s a fun way to see all of the city’s best bits on this Taichung itinerary. You’ll need a  local SIM card and an Easy Card  to rent a bike. Non-residents are also required to pay a TWD 2,000 deposit in case of accidents.
  • Car Hire: Of course, another great way to get around the city is by  renting a car  or  hiring a private driver . This way, you can start your Taichung itinerary from the get-go and never worry about navigating your way around the city.

1 Day Taichung Itinerary

Only have one day in Taichung? Why? Taichung is a fantastic city with a whole bunch of exciting things to do and see!

While one day in Taichung is ample time to see the city’s best gems, it w ill be a busy day! Therefore, to make the most of your 1 day in Taichung, staying overnight is highly encouraged. Of course, if you have a few days to spare on your Taiwan trip, spending 2-3 days in Taichung will allow you to see so much more of the city!

So what should you do on a 1 day Taichung itinerary? Follow my 24 hours in Taichung guide to see the best in the city. Let’s go!

Rainbow Village (彩虹眷村)

Taichung's top Instagrammable spot, Rainbow Village is a must-see on your Taichung itinerary.

Start your 1 day in Taichung itinerary by seeing the  city’s most Instagrammable place   — Rainbow Village. Located less than a 10-minute drive from Taichung HSR Station, Rainbow Village is the perfect spot to kick off your Taichung trip!

Rainbow Village is a designated cultural area and revered for its quirky, colorful murals and intriguing history. Before becoming a tourist hot spot, Rainbow Village was surprisingly a military dependent’s housing complex. Over time the buildings started to deteriorate, and developers wanted to tear them down. When word got out of this, one resident, Mr. Huang (the famous Rainbow Grandpa), decided to transform the remaining houses to save his village.

Update: Sadly, some of the murals at Rainbow Village were vandalized in 2022, leading to its closure for almost a year. Although the village reopened to visitors in 2023, many of the original artworks are gone and have been replaced with new artwork created by local artists or children. If you want to see what’s left, you’ll only need about 30 minutes to tour the entire site.

Painted Animation Lane (動漫彩繪巷)

Painted Animation Lane features an array of quirky art murals, like this Super Mario impression.

Painted Animation Lane is a quirky lane full of colorful murals of anime and cartoon characters. It’s a cute place for a quick s troll , and since the pathway is only a few 100 meters long, it’s perfect for a pitstop on your 1 day Taichung itinerary.

While most travelers only visit here to quickly snap a selfie at the of totally cute Totoro Bus Stop, a short stroll further will afford plenty more Instagrammable gems!

Miyahara (宮原眼科)

miyahara taichung

Miyahara is a popular tourist spot in Taichung famous for its Harry Potter-like interior and delectable sweet treats. Besides the excellent selection of gourmet chocolates, crunchy cookies, fine tea, and local snacks like sun cake and pineapple cake, this high-end dessert store has quite a unique history.

Built during the Japanese Colonial Era in the 1920’s Miyahara was formerly an ophthalmology clinic. Today the red brick building is an iconic landmark in Taichung. Not to mention, one of the most famous dessert shops in Taiwan!

If you’re into gourmet ice cream, Miyahara is the perfect place to satisfy your sweet tooth. Just a heads-up; the lines are always long, so prepare to wait! Alternatively, visit during the early morning hours or late at night. Miyahara is open from 10 am-10 pm.

Oh, and travel tip — Taichung Park is a short stroll away from Miyahara. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy your ice cream away from the bustling city streets!

Calligraphy Greenway (草悟道)

Calligraphy Greenway is a scenic walkway stretching 3.6 kilometers between the National Museum of Natural Science to the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.

It is an excellent place for a leisurely walkabout if you have an hour or two to spare on your Taichung 1 day itinerary. Besides the superb greenery on offer, you’ll find tons of quirky art installations dotted around the park, as well as a great selection of restaurants and cafes along the way. While there’s plenty of Taiwanese food, it is one of Taichung’s best places to find an excellent variety of international cuisine.

Make sure to explore the side streets jolting off from the main pathway t oo! T here are lots of boutique stores, DIY shops, and hipster hangouts in the area! If you happen to visit on the weekend, you’ll find the park full of vendors selling handmade crafts and souvenirs and even a few buskers ready to entertain!

Insider Tip: A few blocks from here, you’ll find  Chun Shui Tang Tea House (春水堂)  – the birthplace of bubble milk tea. It’s a fun pitstop to make if you want to try the best boba tea in Taiwan! More adventurous travelers can also opt to join a DIY bubble milk tea class!

National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (國立台灣美術館)

No visit to Taichung would be complete without dropping by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. Located a short stroll south of the Calligraphy Greenway, the museum is a massive must for modern and contemporary art enthusiasts.

With 24 exhibition halls housing an excellent selection of permanent and temporary displays, one could easily spend a few hours here. Most exhibitions focus on Western art, Chinese paintings, and sculptures.

Since admission to the museum is free, it’s one of the best free things to do in Taichung! Oh, and don’t forget to stroll around the beautiful gardens —there are quite a few gems on display here too!

Feng Chia Night Market (逢甲夜市)

Visiting the bustling night markets in Taichung is a must on your Taichung tour.

If this is your first visit to Taiwan, you’ve probably noticed that night markets are a thing in Taiwan! Taiwanese people love a good night snack, and one of the best places to relish delicious street food is at a night market. The best part, dirt cheap prices!

Luckily for you, Taichung is home to the biggest night market in Taiwan — Fengjia Night Market. It’s a bustling place, and it gets crowded quickly, so try not to come too late. If you want to skip the crowds, it’s best to go before 7 pm or after 10 pm. Alternatively, get ready to join the scrum!

Taichung 2 Days Itinerary

If you have 2 days in Taichung, follow my Taichung 1 day itinerary above on your first day. Then continue with your second day in Taichung with these Taichung attractions below.

On day 2 of your Taichung itinerary, it’s time to explore a few lesser-known gems on the outskirts of the city. While it is possible to reach some of these places via public transport, it’s better to have your own set of wheels. This can be achieved by either   renting a scooter , hiring a private driver or renting a car .

Since these places are not within the city center and involve quite a bit of traveling time, I suggest picking two options (at the most) to fill the second day of your Taichung itinerary.  For more day trip inspiration, read my detailed guide highlighting 15 of the best day trips from Taichung !

Just one of the many beautiful green spaces that dot Taichung City.

Lavender Cottage (薰衣草森林)

Just one hour east of Taichung City brings you to whimsical Lavender Cottage. While most travelers to Taichung head to Xinshe Castle , Lavender Cottage is an excellent alternative and somewhat of a hidden gem.

Located in Xinshe District, Lavender Cottage is a lovely recreational area surrounded by lush mountains and sweeping lavender fields. If you’re looking to spend a relaxing day outdoors, this is an excellent option for you!

There are many different trails to follow through verdant gardens and plenty of spaces where you can take a breather to admire the stunning views. Afterward, grab a bite to eat at the onsite restaurant or shop for handmade souvenirs like lavender soap and hand cream. If you have a sweet tooth, make sure to try the  oh so tasty  lavender ice cream!  Grab a discounted entry ticket here.

Rollin Farm (若茵農場)

Rollin Farm is an excellent alternative if you don’t have time to visit  Alishan National Recreational Forest  to see the epic sea of clouds phenomena.

Located about a 1h30 drive from Taichung, this charming retreat sits 1,200 meters above sea level and offers spectacular views over the Taichung basin no matter which way you turn!

There’s a lovely terrace where you can sit back, grab a bite to eat, and take in the magnificent views. If you’re feeling adventurous, taking a gentle stroll through the bamboo stalk forest won’t disappoint!

If you’d like to see the changing skies and wake up to one heck of a sunrise, consider staying overnight.  Check availability and rates here .

Insider Tip: There is no public transportation to Rollin Farm, so you’ll need to find your own way here. It’s also a good idea to pack motion sickness medication as the road up the mountain has many twists and turns!

Gaomei Wetlands  ( 高美濕地 )

Gaomei Wetlands is a beautifully scenic area located within a 1-hour drive from Taichung. It’s home to diverse animal and bird life and a dedicated ecological park.

While it is possible to visit during the day, I recommend coming an hour or two before sunset. By doing so, you’ll have enough time to pop by the Visitors’ Center, where you can learn more about the varied ecology and visit the impressive red and white lighthouse. If you’re looking for a fun way to explore the area, make sure to rent a bike at one of the vendors near the Visitors’ Center.

Afterward, grab a snack at one of the outdoor vendors to enjoy the epic sunset over the marshes from the Gaomei Walkway! Make sure to grab a spot early as the walkway gets crowded quickly right before sunset!

Insider Tip: If you don’t have your own set of wheels, take the direct bus #309 from Taichung and alight at stop No. 18 Wind Turbine. If that sounds like too much trouble for you, consider   joining this excellent half-day tour !

Gaomei Wetlands at sunset shouldn't be missed on your Taichung itinerary.

Looking for a change of scenery? Taiwan’s brand new copper temple, Baiyang Temple of Heaven is located roughly 40 minutes drive from Taichung and offers breathtaking scenery and loads of photo ops!

Taichung Itinerary 3 days : Day Trip to Sun Moon Lake

If you have 3 days in Taichung, then you simply must visit  Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) on your last day. While it is possible to  explore Sun Moon Lake on a guided day tour  or independently, I highly recommend staying longer!

Sun moon lake

Sun Moon Lake is the largest natural lake in Taiwan and has a wealth of activities to entice visitors! From scenic hiking trails, gorgeous round-the-lake cycling paths, a bustling aboriginal food market, several majestic temples, and an epic cable car ride – Sun Moon Lake has something for everyone!

You can read my detailed  Sun Moon Lake travel guide , which sets out absolutely everything you need to know about visiting this spectacular natural wonder. Also see my detailed Sun Moon Lake transport guide to find the easiest route there, and this guide on where to stay in Sun Moon Lake .

How I Spent 72 Hours in Taipei [Things To Do, What To Eat]

Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is a dream travel destination for many.

It’s a bustling metropolis best known for blending modern conveniences with traditional culture. The city features famous and dominating skyscrapers as well as historic temples. It is also known for its night markets (which have some of the best street food on the planet), the efficient metro system that makes getting around easy, and the wonderful and hospitable locals.

So, when I had the opportunity to travel to Taipei for an inexpensive cash fare from Seoul, South Korea (where I was at the time), I took full advantage of it.

Here’s a look at how I spent 72 hours in Taipei, one of my new favorite places to travel.

Most international travelers, especially those from the U.S., fly into Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) . Fortunately, several airlines fly between the U.S. and Taipei.

From the U.S.,  you can fly nonstop to Taipei on 5 different airlines . Here’s a table of the airlines and the nonstop routes you can fly:

If you are flying into Taipei from China, Japan, or South Korea, consider pricing flights into the smaller Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA).

Guest room at the EPISODE Daan Taipei Hyatt

Although I stayed with a friend in Taipei, there are endless hotel options to choose from. Taipei has many cost-effective local hotels, boutique properties, and hostels, but there are also major hotel chains, including Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, and IHG.

Although Taipei is rather large, it is well-connected by public transportation. However, many of its main attractions are spread out, so choosing which area to stay in can be tricky.

As for the accommodations, there are good options, no matter your budget or where you choose to stay. Here’s a look at some of the most popular and convenient Taipei neighborhoods.

Taipei Main Station

If you are looking for the most convenience, the area around Taipei Main Station is where you’ll want to be.

The area is filled with restaurants, cafés, and cheap hotels. There are also several underground malls and shopping streets. Of course, you can also find luxury hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants in the area.

Taipei Main Station is the city’s main transportation hub. Here, you can find the Taiwan Railway Corporation trains, the High Speed Rail, the intersection of the red and blue Taipei Mass Rapid Transit (MRT or Metro) lines, the Airport MRT , and the Taipei bus station.

Hotel Resonance Taipei, Tapestry Collection by Hilton is located near Taipei Main Station.

Ximending , or Ximen, is in Wanhua District, the old city of Taipei. The area has kept a historical feeling many other areas of Taipei have long lost.

Ximending is a pedestrian-only shopping district famous for its funky shops, hip cafés, bars and restaurants, LGBT-friendly scene, history, and some of Taipei’s best street food.

It is only 1 MRT stop (about a 15-minute walk) from Taipei Main Station, making it convenient, as well. This area has hotels across all budgets, but there are many cheaper options. Suz & Catorze Taipei, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel is in the Ximending area.

Around Taipei 101

Taipei 101 is probably the most recognizable sight in Taiwan. It is in the Eastern District of Taipei, one of the city’s newest areas. This modern area boasts most of the city’s skyscrapers and also has world-class shopping, restaurants, and nightlife.

As a result, the area tends to be quite high-end and higher priced than the rest of the city. It has many of Taipei’s most upscale hotels, like the Grand Hyatt Taipei and the Le Méridien Taipei . There are also more budget hotels.

After arriving at  Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport at around 5 a.m. from Seoul, I was excited to be in Taipei for the first time and was eager to begin exploring. At a convenience store at the airport, I purchased an EasyCard , Taiwan’s most popular and common reloadable, contactless smart card.

The EasyCard is the go-to payment method for most locals and tourists. It can be used to pay for public transportation, purchases at convenience stores and supermarkets, and even for certain tourist attractions across Taiwan.

You can purchase an EasyCard at any MRT station in Taiwan (including Airport MRT stations) or any convenience store (such as 7-Eleven or FamilyMart).

Taipei EasyCard for public transportation

An adult EasyCard costs NT$100 (about $3). You also have the option to pick from multiple EasyCard designs (which generally cost more).

You also need to load some money onto the card before using it. Public transportation in Taipei is relatively inexpensive. However, as I expected to take full advantage of the incredible public transportation that I had heard about, I loaded NT$400 ($12).

From the Airport MRT station, I took the express service train directly to Taipei Main Station. I then took a local bus to get to my friend’s apartment to catch up with him and drop off my bags. After a few hours, I was ready to head out and explore Taipei.

Grand Hotel Taipei

Since my friend’s apartment is in the Shilin area of Taipei, I thought it would be best to explore the area. My first stop was the Grand Hotel Taipei , a 15-minute walk from my friend’s place.

The exterior of the iconic Grand Hotel Taipei. Ehsan Haque

The Grand Hotel Taipei is an icon of Chinese culture and is considered one of the most luxurious hotels in Taipei. It is T aiwan’s first 5-star hotel and has hosted many foreign dignitaries over the years.

The hotel was built in May 1952 but has undergone several expansions. At 285 feet, it is now one of the tallest Chinese classical buildings in the world.

The hotel features a palace-inspired exterior with golden roof tiling and red columns, which showcase Chinese architecture and culture. There are also dragon sculptures throughout the structures that make up the hotel.

Grand Hotel Taipei interior. Ehsan Haque

The hotel’s interior was just as stunning when I went. The expansive lobby made a powerful first impression, blending luxury with cultural flair. The hotel featured impressive decor, including art pieces, sculptures, and other cultural artifacts.

Each of the 8 guest floors represented a different Chinese dynasty, as evidenced by the different decor and artwork on each floor. They also featured impressive details, such as elegant lighting fixtures.

Plane-Spotting at Yuan Shan

My friend told me that if I wanted a nice surprise, I should make my way to one of the several viewpoints in the Yuan Shan Scenic Area .

I followed one of several hiking trails from the Grand Hotel Taipei. The hike took about 45 minutes but could have been much shorter without a sudden rainstorm. I made it to one of the numerous viewpoints and was surprised to see a China Eastern plane about to land at Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA) within a few seconds of my arrival.

Taipei Songshan Airport is a regional airport and serves mainly domestic destinations in Taiwan. It also serves international destinations, including Seoul, Tokyo, and select cities in China. The bigger (and much farther) Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport serves most of Taipei’s other international flights.

Some of the more notable airlines flying in and out of Songshan Airport include Air China, All Nippon Airways, China Airlines, China Eastern, EVA Air, Japan Airlines, and Shanghai Airlines.

After about 20 minutes, I could also spot an ANA Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft coming from Tokyo.

This viewpoint was a rather nice surprise. As an aviation enthusiast, I could have spent hours here if it hadn’t been raining so much at the time. Still, I enjoyed the 30 or so minutes I spent there.

After walking down from the Yuan Shan Scenic Area, I went to the closest MRT station and rode the MRT toward Taipei 101 .

Taipei 101 is, without a doubt, the most important landmark of Taiwan. It serves as a symbol of Taiwan’s growth and recognition on the global stage. The building features a modern architectural style influenced by traditional Asian aesthetics, with a pagoda-inspired design.

Including its spire, Taipei 101 is 508 meters (1,667 feet) high. It held the title of the world’s tallest building from 2004 until 2010, when the Burj Khalifa in Dubai surpassed it.

The building features 2 observation decks (on the 88th and 89th floors), a luxury shopping mall (Taipei 101 Mall), and the famous large tuned mass damper, which helps stabilize the building against strong winds and earthquakes.

Taipei 101 view from nearby park. Ehsan Haque

I decided not to go to the building’s observation decks. Instead, I went somewhere free nearby that required another hike.

Elephant Mountain or Xiangshan Trail

After walking and photographing the streets around Taipei 101, I headed toward Elephant Mountain . Elephant Mountain, also known as Xiangshan , is a prominent mountain near the heart of Taipei City with several hiking trails.

The main trail to the viewpoint offered stunning panoramic views of Taipei City and Taipei 101. The trail was a mix of stairs and dirt paths, took me about 20 to 30 minutes to climb, and is considered moderately challenging.

Along the trail, there were several viewpoints where I could stop to admire the scenery. However, the most popular viewpoint is the Elephant Mountain Trail Viewpoint , which offers unobstructed, panoramic views of the Taipei City skyline.

Taipei night view from Elephant Mountain. Ehsan Haque

After a long first day that involved 2 separate hikes, I was ready to see more of Taipei’s main attractions. However, I was more interested in seeing the cultural parts of what Taipei had to offer.

Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall

I started the day by visiting another symbol of Taipei: the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall . The monument was built in memory of Chiang Kai-shek, former president of the Republic of China.

The memorial hall was blue and white, representing the blue sky and 12 rays of a white sun. The ground level featured a library and a museum documenting Chiang’s life and career. Several exhibits detailed Taiwan’s turbulent history and modern development.

Chiang Kao Shek Memorial Hall. Taipei Taiwan

Inside, there was also a bronze statue of Chiang. On weekdays, there is a changing of the guard ceremony.

228 Peace Memorial Park

I then walked to 228 Peace Memorial Park , which is about a 10-minute walk from the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. This important historical site commemorates the February 28 Incident in 1947 .

The event began a period of political unrest and violence in Taiwan under the Kuomintang government. A conflict between government officials and civilians led to protests and a crackdown that resulted in widespread violence, casualties, and subsequent martial law.

Pagoda at the 228 Peace Memorial Park. Ehsan Haque

Throughout the park, I found various memorials, shrines, and educational exhibits dedicated to the victims of the 228 Incident. There were also several green spaces and walking paths.

The park provided great insight and a reminder of Taiwan’s journey toward democracy and human rights. It honored the victims of past injustices and promoted a message of peace, reconciliation, and unity among its people, all of which I found to be quite interesting.

Airplane Alley

As mentioned before, Taipei Songshan Airport is Taipei’s smaller and much closer airport. As it’s so close to the city, there are many vantage points where you can see planes taking off and landing (perfect for AvGeeks). One of those points is Airplane Alley .

As its name suggests, Airplane Alley is a small viewing platform on Binjiang Street Lane 180. It is just at the edge of TSA’s runway, behind an airport security fence. No tall buildings obstruct the view.

Because of the runway’s close proximity, there were tailwinds from the aircraft engines, and the planes taking off and landing could be quite loud. However, it was absolutely worth it.

A few minutes after arriving, I saw this ANA 787 Dreamliner preparing to take off.

Raohe Street Night Market

After about 30 minutes of watching several planes take off and land, it was almost dark, so I headed toward one of what makes Taiwan so special: its night markets. The night markets are world-renowned for their lively atmosphere and diverse food offerings, which are ingrained in Taiwanese culture.

Raohe Street Night Market Taipei Taiwan. Ehsan Haque

I headed to Raohe Street Night Market , one of Taipei’s oldest and most famous night markets. These markets are well-known for stalls serving diverse street food.

Along with the street food, I found shops selling clothing, accessories, gadgets, and souvenirs. The night market also had the Songshan Ciyou Temple , a Taoist temple that dates back to the Qing Dynasty.

I spent about an hour exploring the market and trying out many of Taiwan’s most famous street dishes (more on that below).

Taipei has some incredible street food

Since I had only 1 more full day in Taipei, I wanted to see some of its famous temples. I began with 2.

Taipei Confucius Temple

The Taipei Confucius Temple is a Confucian temple in Datong District. It honors one of the greatest philosophers of all time, Confucius, and is modeled after the original Confucius Temple in the philosopher’s hometown of Qufu, Shandong.

Taipei Confucius Temple Taipei Taiwan. Ehsan Haque

The temple was built in 1879 during the Qing Dynasty. However, it was demolished during the Japanese occupation and was rebuilt in 1930. As it stands today, it displays all the characteristics of traditional Chinese temple architecture.

Every year on September 28, a grand ceremony with traditional music and stylized dancing is held at the temple in honor of Confucius.

Dalongdong Baoan Temple

Across the street from the Confucius temple is the Dalongdong Baoan Temple , also known simply as the Baoan Temple. The Baoan Temple was originally constructed in 1742 during the Qing Dynasty to honor the Taoist Emperor Baosheng, revered for healing and protective powers.

Like the Confucius Temple, this temple exemplified traditional Chinese temple architecture. It featured ornate roof decorations, intricate carvings, and vibrant painted motifs. The inside of the temple boasted carefully crafted sculptures, statues of gods and goddesses, and religious altars where worshippers offered prayers and incense.

Dalongdong Baoan Temple Taipei Taiwan

In 2003, the temple was inducted into the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation, symbolizing its historical and spiritual importance.

Shilin Night Market

After having so much fun at the Raohe Street Night Market the night before, I decided to visit the Shilin Night Market , another famous night market in Taipei.

Taipei night market food stand. Ehsan Haque

Like the Raohe Street Night Market, the Shilin Night Market offered a variety of food vendors and small restaurants on a larger scale. However, this market also had many non-food vendors. At Shilin Night Market, I also found video arcades, karaoke bars, furniture stores, photo shops, and pet shops.

The Shilin Night Market perfectly embodied Taiwan’s culinary diversity and showed the true scale of its dynamic urban life.

Taipei has an incredible food scene, from jaw-dropping street food to world-class restaurants. In my travels, I almost always go the street route. There may not be a better city in the world for delicious street food.

Taipei night market street food

Taiwanese cuisine is diverse and reflects the island’s rich history and cultural influences. Its cuisine has been shaped by centuries of immigration and cultural exchange among indigenous Taiwanese, Chinese, Japanese, and other cultures. This combination of flavors and cooking methods has created some of the best food on earth.

Here’s a look at some of the best street food that Taipei has to offer.

Of course, we start with bubble tea, also known as pearl milk tea or boba tea. Bubble tea originated in Taiwan in the 1980s and has become famous worldwide.

Bubble tea starts with chewy tapioca pearls (boba) made from tapioca starch derived from cassava roots. Then, a tea base, usually black or green, is brewed and chilled. Lastly, the tea is mixed with milk or creamer (some variations use fruit flavors or juices). Bubble tea is typically served cold, often over ice, making it a refreshing beverage.

Stinky Tofu

Probably the most well-known and polarizing Taiwanese snack, stinky tofu, is not for everyone. It is renowned for its strong, pungent (in my opinion, disgusting) odor. It is often described as smelling like strong cheese or garbage.

Stinky tofu is made by fermenting fresh tofu in brine with vegetables, meat, and herbs. It is typically deep-fried until crispy on the outside and can also be served braised or steamed.

Despite the strong smell, stinky tofu can be surprisingly mild and savory. It is often accompanied by chili or spicy sauces to balance out the taste.

Beef Noodle Soup

One of Taiwan’s national dishes, beef noodle soup, is also worth trying. In fact, it is probably the most traditional street food available in Taiwan.

Taiwanese beef noodle soup is made with braised beef, green onions, pickled mustard vegetables, and a flavorful broth infused with herbs and spices. The result is a perfect bowl of spicy, savory, fresh, and salty flavors.

Fuzhou Pepper Bun

Another famous Taiwanese street food delicacy is the black pepper bun, which is known for its savory and aromatic flavors.

Black pepper buns typically consist of dough bread filled with ground pork or beef marinated in soy sauce, garlic, onions, and a generous amount of freshly ground black pepper. They are traditionally baked in a tandoor-like clay oven, which makes the outer layer crispy (giving it a distinct golden-brown crust) while keeping the inside juicy and flavorful.

Taipei is a dream destination for many and is now undoubtedly one of my favorite Asian cities. I had wanted to visit here for so long and left the city excited about returning someday.

Taipei has so much to offer. The city has some of the best street food in the world and some of the friendliest people I’ve met in all my travels.

I am so excited to head back in the near future. Fortunately, getting to Taipei from the U.S. is quite easy, as several airlines offer nonstop routes between select U.S. cities and Taipei. Best of all, you can use points and miles to get there!
