Planning a Campus Tour at UCLA

ucla official tour

Thank you for your interest in visiting UCLA! We are excited to welcome you and your guests to campus to learn more about the Bruin experience first hand. If you would like to visit , be sure to reserve your spot on a campus tour! We encourage you to plan your visit early since our tours quickly fill up with visitors from across California, the United States, and the world. The tours reservation system will open dates four months in advance.

Please ensure you are arriving at the tour date and time for which you have reserved. Note: We will not be able to accommodate groups who arrive for a different date and/or time than the one specified in their reservation. We do not offer a waitlist for campus tours nor will we be able to accommodate guests without a reservation. Guests without a reservation may still receive the UCLA self-guided tour map and other suggestions for learning more about our campus from a staff member at check-in and speak with them regarding any questions about the campus as well.

What kind of tour do I sign up for?

There are a few different options to choose from as you explore our Campus Tours website:

  • “Individual Tours” for parties  of 1-6 people which must be reserved online through our website. We encourage you to visit if you are a prospective freshman (from high school) or transfer (from another college/university) applicant. If you would like to make a reservation for 7 or more guests in your party, please contact our Tour Coordinators at (310) 825-8764 Tours are generally offered on all weekdays and Saturdays. Special accommodations (American Sign Language interpreter, wheelchair, no steps tour route) can be provided and you can request these with your reservation. These requests need to be made 2 weeks in advance.
  • “Group Tours” for high schools, community colleges, and community based groups where we can accommodate groups of 10-100 .
  •   “Cub Tours” for groups of students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.

What do I do if the tours are full?

We cannot accommodate guests who do not have a reservation. If a tour is full, we encourage you to continue to check the reservation site as registered guests may cancel and this will open up spots allowing you to make a reservation. If the tour is full and you would still like to visit campus, there is a self-guided tour map available.  This will allow you to go at your own pace, to explore parts of campus you’re most interested in, and to visit the Hill, our residential community, which is not included on the official tour. We also encourage you to visit Undergraduate Admission located at 1147 Murphy Hall where you can speak with an admission advisor and pick up copies of all of our publications. Undergraduate Admission is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.

I can’t travel to Los Angeles. How do I still explore UCLA?

If you are unable to visit us in person, we encourage you to explore our virtual tour . We will also frequently utilize our social media accounts to provide information on our campus and the application process throughout the year! Be sure to sign up for Get Connected , so you can be aware of any Facebook live events, webinars, or any additional events near where you may live! Please note, that demonstrated interest is not a factor within our review process. This means that if you are able to visit and meet with us or not, your application will not be impacted in any way. We encourage you to utilize our publication library and the resources linked above to best suit your schedule, interests, and questions!

What else can I explore on campus?

There are many additional ways to explore our campus community! To see our residential communities, sign up for the on-campus housing tour . For students interested in one of our specialty schools (Arts and Architecture, Music, Theater, Film and Television, Nursing, or Engineering), book one of our specialty school tours and information sessions .   During the academic year, you can also experience our academic community first-hand  by sitting in on a class from the approved list of courses for our lecture series .

I’m registered for a tour: what do I do the day of my reservation?

Upon arriving to campus, please proceed to the parking kiosk located at Westwood Plaza and Strathmore Place. A parking attendant will direct you to the nearest available parking structure. Please note, parking for the day is $13.

For registered guests, you will begin your tour in the Bruin Viewpoint Lounge in Ackerman Student Union . This building is located in Bruin Plaza with some close landmarks including the Luskin Conference Center and the Bruin Bear (great for photos if you arrive early!). You will go to the A Level of Ackerman (above the UCLA Store) and a sign will direct you to where you may check-in. We are located across from the Bruin Pharmacy and next to the Photo Center.

Your campus visit will last approximately two hours, including a 30-minute admission presentation and 90-minute walking tour, guided by a current undergraduate student. The tour includes hills and stairs so comfortable shoes are highly encouraged. Please allow ample time for Los Angeles traffic and parking to arrive at the time specified with your tour confirmation. For more assistance, including visuals on where to park and check-in for your tour, view our Campus Tour highlight on our Instagram !

We hope you are excited to visit our campus! We look forward to welcoming you to campus and answering your questions regarding academic programs, resources, student life, and admissions!

One century. 14 Nobel Prizes. 261 Olympic Medals. And 13 MacArthur Fellows. UCLA has the numbers—but we’re about much more than numbers.

Through a century of optimism, this university has done some incredible things. For example, our faculty and alumni helped invent a little thing known as the internet—and we’ve since created over 140 companies using technology developed on-campus.

UCLA’s optimism is more than just a sunny disposition. It’s in our DNA. Underneath the clear Californian skies, in one of the world’s biggest cities, you’ll find 40,000 staff and students, each looking to redefine what’s possible.

Because at UCLA, you’ll soon learn that anything is possible.

ucla official tour

We’re excited that you want to tour the beautiful campus of UCLA! We have compiled some helpful information for you to make the most of your tour and visit here, including information about dining, shopping, entertainment, accommodations, and transportation. UCLA’s campus is not only inviting, but very convenient for students, parents and other visitors to access and explore.

TOURING UCLA

You can visit UCLA year-round on weekdays and weekends, but you’ll find the campus service limited or closed during major state and federal holidays. Also, during times of reduced student traffic (such as between academic quarters), you’ll find services limited as well.

UCLA Bruin Day

UCLA Bruin Day for freshman is on Saturday, April 14, 2018, and is your chance to not only visit UCLA, but to celebrate it! A number of activities, events and presentations are planned on this day, to make your decision to attend UCLA so much easier. These include: attending academic lectures , attending presentations highlighting specific academic departments and programs , and learning about UCLA’s community, benefits, and other student opportunities .

The BruinDay website also has a great portal for all campus landmarks, museums and gardens, athletic and recreation centers and arts and entertainment venues that you might like to visit. UCLA Bruin Day for Transfers is on May 12, 2018, with similar informative and fun events for prospective students. Visit the UCLA Bruin Day website for all information about both days.

UCLA Campus Tours

You can schedule individual tours and group tours easily at the UCLA Campus Tours website . These tours offer a fun way to explore all the major points on campus, with helpful guides that provide you with fun facts and helpful information about key buildings, facilities, departments and the university itself – as they walk you through North, Central and South points on campus. If you are a newly-admitted student, UCLA has even organized a special tour program, the Admitted Student Presentation and Tour , that can be accessed on the UCLA admissions portal .

For a self-guided tour, this handy map provides you with information about all the key points on campus designated into different zones. We hope that you’ll use this guide when exploring the campus and all it has to offer, for the best experience.

DINING AT UCLA

The UCLA dining scene is among the best in the nation for students – and it’s great for parents and other visitors, too! UCLA has many fast-casual and other quick dining spots throughout its three segments of campus: North Campus, Central Campus, and South Campus. If fine dining is your thing, then there’s even an acclaimed restaurant serving Mediterranean-inspired, California fresh cuisine at the UCLA Luskin Conference Center. Plateia Restaurant is open seven days a week and has excellent menus, and even a full bar, for visitors to the campus.

Central Campus

ucla official tour

Central Campus refers to the main core of campus at Ackerman Union – the university’s student union. Here, there are two main food courts where you can find popular local chains like Rubio’s or Wolfgang Puck’s. At the same time, the Kerckhoff Coffee House is a student-favorite on campus, serving a wide selection of different coffees.

North Campus

North Campus is the uppermost part of campus near Royce Hall and its vicinity. There are two main dining areas in this part of campus: North Campus Student Center and Lu Valle Commons. Aside from the usual selection of fresh salads, sandwiches, pizza and other quick meals, Northern Lights is a great stop for coffee if you’re trekking this part of campus.

South Campus

To every student who frequents this part of campus, they’ll tell you the place to be for food is the Court of Sciences Student Center – formerly known as “The Bomb Shelter” (when it actually served as that, during the Cold War). These days, you can grab a quick meal – from rotisserie chicken to noodle bowls, and even visit Northern Lights’ cousin to the south – Southern Lights – for some great coffee!

Plateia Restaurant

ucla official tour

Finally, the jewel of fine dining on campus is Plateia within Luskin Conference Center. The selection of freshly prepared foods is as impressive as the ambiance. Whether you’d like to dine in its amazing interior or on the patio near the calming fountain, Plateia is a great place to experience the best of dining on the UCLA campus. Plateia is also most convenient for parents and other visitors to the UCLA campus who are staying at the UCLA Luskin Conference Center. Plateia is conveniently located on the lobby level and has menus for all meals: breakfast , lunch , dinner and even a special menu for weekend breakfast . They also offer happy hours daily from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

SHOPPING AT UCLA

When you visit UCLA, there are two great options for shopping. These include visiting the UCLA Store or nearby Westwood Village, with a wide selection of boutique and chain stores.

ucla official tour

Show your UCLA spirit by stopping by the main shopping center on campus – the UCLA Store – to buy anything Bruin. From UCLA apparel to posters to books and other merchandise, you’ll find it in this hotspot for shopping on campus. Also, everything you purchase at the UCLA Store benefits the UCLA campus. A percentage of all proceeds goes to supporting UCLA campus services, activities and even athletics. Visit the UCLA Store website for more information or hours !

Westwood Village Shopping

Westwood Village is the community of shops, restaurants, and entertainment surrounding the UCLA campus. Here, you’ll find boutique stores and national chain brands like Target, where you can find almost everything you are looking for while visiting UCLA! The Westwood Village local business directory is an excellent way to find a particular store in the area.

ENTERTAINMENT AT UCLA

As a world-renowned academic and cultural institution, UCLA invites some of the top musical, acting and other performing arts talent in the world to campus. At the same time, UCLA’s departments also hold shows and screening in Westwood Village, just a 5-10 minute walk from UCLA.

Performing Arts

The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television showcases some of the finest live theater in Los Angeles at the Little Theater, Freud Playhouse and Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Performances are always ongoing, so we recommend checking the performing arts calendar prior to your visit or the Center for the Art of Performance website for all information about performing arts events at UCLA!

Movie Theaters

ucla official tour

UCLA has produced many famous actors, actresses, producers, and directors. Its proximity to Hollywood also means that it is around some amazing movie theaters. In fact, two signature theaters are within walking distance from UCLA in Westwood Village. They are the Fox Village Theatre and Bruin Theatre . If you’re lucky, you might catch a movie premiere happening live in front of the Fox Village Theater – a popular place for movie premieres.

UCLA’s storied men’s basketball program has won 11 national championships and cemented its place as one of the premier programs in the nation. It joins other UCLA athletic programs in having a strong history and winning tradition. See which sports are in season and if you can catch a game while on campus !

ucla official tour

There are several acclaimed museums on campus and off-campus. UCLA Fowler Museum is a fine collection of art and artifacts celebrating the culture of the Americas. See the museum celebrating the history of the Internet (started at UCLA), the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame , or even the UCLA Meteorite museum on campus. If you feel like venturing nearby off-campus the Hammer Museum is also home to great art and performances.

STAYING AT UCLA

Visiting UCLA from a distant city means that you’ll most likely want to stay on or near campus. Los Angeles is an amazing city yet a very large one! So, we recommend staying as close to UCLA as you can, so that you can easily tour the campus without having to commute. In fact, the best advice is to stay on the campus itself at the UCLA Meyer & Renee Luskin Conference Center . The conference center has world-class accommodations available for prospective students and their families .

UCLA Meyer & Renee Luskin Conference Center Accommodations

Staying at UCLA is a simple decision to make, with the UCLA Meyer & Renee Luskin Conference Center and its offering of comfortable single and double rooms . These rooms were designed with complete comfort in mind, and have modern amenities for your enjoyment. 2024 NBA Draft Combine: Official Invitees and Dates

Draft digest staff | may 5, 2024.

May 15, 2023; Chicago, Il, USA; Trey Alexander participates in the 2023 NBA Draft Combine at

As the 2024 NBA Draft continues to inch closer, pre-draft events are beginning to unfold. Earlier this week, the NBA announced the 78 players have been invited to the 2024 NBA Draft Combine, which will take place from May 12-19 at Wintrust Arena and the Marriott Marquis in Chicago. This is one of the premier showcases for prospects to work out in front of and meet with many teams around the league in a short period of time.

On top of the 78 prospects, a select number of standout players from the 2024 NBA G League Elite Camp, which takes place at the same venue in the two days prior to the combine, will be invited to stay in Chicago to participate in the premier event following.

It's worth noting that not every invitee will actually compete in the combine. Most notably, Zaccharie Risacher and Nikola Topic both have a chance to be selected in the top five of the 2024 NBA Draft but are still amidst professional seasons internationally. This is the case for several other prospects with a projected first-round grade as well. While all invited players are required to attend and participate in the NBA Draft Combine, the NBA can excuse attendance or participation due to circumstances like this.

Let's take a look at the initial 78 players invited to the NBA Draft Combine:

Administrators at the University of California, Los Angeles, called in law enforcement officers on Wednesday after violent clashes broke out at a pro-Palestinian protest encampment, a university official said.

The Los Angeles police were “responding immediately” to a request for support from the university, according to the office of the Los Angeles mayor, Karen Bass. The police had arrived at the campus by about 1:50 a.m., local time, Ms. Bass said on social media .

Late Tuesday, a group of about 200 counterprotesters began storming the pro-Palestinian encampment on campus and tried to pull apart its wooden pallets and metal barricades. The two sides threw objects, got into fistfights and sprayed chemicals in clashes that went on for several hours, according to a New York Times journalist who was there.

Police officers arrived to chants of “Back the blue” from counterprotesters and “Free Palestine” from the encampment. At around 3:30 a.m., officers wedged themselves between the groups, quieting the unrest.

The clashes followed several violent confrontations between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli protesters on the campus in recent days. Dueling protests have been particularly intense at U.C.L.A., where Jewish activists have had a larger presence than at other campus demonstrations. On Monday night, a fight broke out between two groups of protesters after about 60 pro-Israel demonstrators attempted to enter the pro-Palestinian encampment.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the violence on Wednesday morning.

The university had been among the most tolerant as pro-Palestinian protests and encampments grew at universities nationwide. But in a sharp turn on Tuesday, U.C.L.A. administrators declared that the encampment there was unlawful and threatened to suspend or expel any protesters who were students.

Videos posted to social media show clashes on Wednesday involving protesters, firecrackers exploding near groups of demonstrators and people spraying what appeared to be chemical irritants at one another. Some people were also seen tearing down metal barricades surrounding the encampment.

The U.C. Divest Coalition at U.C.L.A., which has been organizing pro-Palestinian protests at the university, said on social media on Wednesday that students at its encampment had been attacked by “fireworks, tear-gas, pepper spray and more.”

“Horrific acts of violence occurred at the encampment tonight, and we immediately called law enforcement for mutual aid support,” Mary Osako, a vice chancellor at the university, said in an emailed statement early Wednesday.

“The fire department and medical personnel are on the scene,” she added. “We are sickened by this senseless violence and it must end.”

The Los Angeles Police Department said that there had been “multiple acts of violence within the large encampment” on the campus. In response to a request from the university, the police officers were assisting campus police and other agencies “to restore order and maintain public safety.”

Ms. Bass had spoken to both Gene Block, the university chancellor, and Dominic Choi, the Los Angeles chief of police, according to a social media post by Zach Seidl, Ms. Bass’s chief spokesman. Ms. Bass said in a later post that “the violence unfolding this evening at UCLA is absolutely abhorrent and inexcusable.”

US campus protests updates: Police clear pro-Palestine UCLA camp

These were the updates on the US campus protests for Thursday, May 2.

Police make an arrest as they face-off with pro-Palestinian students after destroying part of the encampment barricade on the campus of the

This live page is now closed.

  • Police in the United States have arrested at least 132 student protesters and put them on buses after they forcibly cleared  a peaceful pro-Palestine encampment at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
  • Protesters waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans as advancing officers in riot gear fired flashbangs and removed barricades .
  • The dispersal of the camp comes after police ordered the hundreds of protesters to leave or face arrest, fewer than 24 hours after their encampment was attacked by violent pro-Israel counter-protesters.
  • President Joe Biden gave his first comments on the campus protests after the dispersal of the encampment, saying “dissent must never lead to disorder”, but making no mention of violent attacks on pro-Palestinian protesters.

For more of our coverage, read about why the campus protests are striking a chord here .

And to find out more about the freedom of speech concerns surrounding recent crackdowns, turn here .

Here’s what happened today

This live page will be closing soon. Here’s a recap of the latest as protests continue at university campuses across the US:

  • US President Joe Biden has finally broken his silence on the nationwide protests, saying the US does not “squash dissent” but authorities will also enforce the rule of law.
  • Biden says the surge in campus unrest, which may spell trouble for him in November’s presidential election, will not affect his policy stance.
  • Hours earlier, police had cleared an encampment at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) that had come under attack by pro-Israeli counterprotesters a day earlier. At least 132 people were arrested, but more protesters have already started to gather.
  • Police crackdowns have also been reported at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire as well as at two public universities in upstate New York.

‘greater than an encampment’: why gaza student protests strike a chord.

Jillian Kestler-D'Amours

Reporting from Montreal, Canada

Like  those in the US , the encampment at Canada’s McGill University has struck a chord – both with the students and wider community members who support the protesters, and with the pro-Israel politicians and groups that have vehemently denounced them.

Some supporters say the encampments have stirred such strong reactions because they are highlighting stark inconsistencies: governments that say they promote human rights but  provide unwavering support  to Israel; universities that say they promote freedom of expression but send police to break up peaceful protests; right-wing politicians that denounce liberal “safe space” policies, but are now arguing that pro-Israel students feel unsafe.

The student protests have “exposed a lot of the contradictions in political discourse in the US and by extension, in Canada, too”, said Barry Eidlin, an associate professor of sociology at McGill.

“It hits so close to home for people and [there’s] this sort of hypocrisy between what our governments say they stand for in terms of democracy, human rights, freedom – and the kind of actions that they are supporting” in Gaza, he told Al Jazeera.

Trump weighs in on protests from hush money trial

Biden’s comments came shortly after Trump, who he is set to face off against the 2024 presidential election, again weighed in on the protests.

Speaking outside of his criminal trial, where he faces 34 felony charges related to payments made to an adult film star, Trump praised police in New York and California for cracking down on protesters.

“[The NYPD] did a job in Columbia and likewise in Los Angeles they did a really good job at UCLA,” he said.

He then renewed a familiar line.

“These are radical left lunatics. And they’ve got to be stopped,” he said.

Trump

Biden finally breaks his silence on campus protests

Kimberly Halkett

Reporting from Washington, DC

The US president, Joe Biden, has been under pressure, not just by his rival in the upcoming presidential election, former President Donald Trump, but also from the American public, who have been wondering why he’s been absent as these nationwide protests grow on college campuses.

There have been comments from the National Security Council spokesperson, the deputy press secretary, the press secretary, all saying pretty much what the president said: that these protests are not within the law, that the White House supports free speech, the right to protest and freedom of assembly, but that it doesn’t support protests that are unlawful.

One of the questions asked to President Biden was whether the demonstrations would make him change any of his policies on Gaza. The answer was no, without hesitation or qualification. And that’s what could have quelled this disruption. The fact that he was not willing to budge on that is going to be a problem for Biden, because he needs these young people to win re-election, and he trails Trump in a lot of battleground states.

The US president has a problem, and so far, he has not changed his tack.

Protests will not affect policy, National Guard should not be deployed: Biden

US President Joe Biden responded to two questions after completing the brief statement.

First, he was asked if the campus protests had affected his views on his administration’s policies.

“No,” he responded.

Second, he was asked if the US National Guard should be deployed to quell protests.

“No,” he said.

Biden says not a moment for ‘politics’ but for ‘clarity’

In his speech, Biden said it was not a “moment for politics”, but was instead a “moment for clarity”.

He went on to say that peaceful protests in the US is protected, but violent protest is not.

“Destroying property is not a peaceful protest, it’s against the law,” he said.

He added that protest should not veer into harassment, or prevent other students from receiving their education. “There should be no place in any campus place in America for antisemitism or threats of violence against Jewish students.”

Biden’s statements cut to questions at the heart of the protests. He has been among several elected officials who have portrayed the protests as broadly anti-Semitic.

Organisers have said critics have conflated criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism, using allegations of hate speech to stifle their voices. They also point to the large presence of Jewish people among the protesters.

Biden notably ignored one of the worst acts of violence to be committed at the student protests over the past two weeks: the attack by pro-Israeli protesters on the pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA late on Tuesday.

Biden says US does not ‘squash dissent’

Addressing the protests, the president said they have been a test for free speech and the rule of law.

“We are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people or squash dissent. The American people are heard,” he said.

“But neither are we a lawless country,” he added.

More than 1,600 protesters arrested on US campuses over two weeks

Since April 18, when the latest round of campus protests began to surge, there have been arrests at 30 institutions of higher education in the US, according to an AP tally.

The most recent of those were at UCLA, where police cleared the protest encampment today. At Dartmouth College, 90 others were arrested overnight.

In New York, at least 29 protesters were also arrested overnight at Stony Brook University and 16 at the University at Buffalo, two campuses of the state university system.

Biden begins address on campus protests

Biden began address saying he would discuss “what’s going on our college campuses”.

We will bring you what he says shortly.

Media rights groups call on universities to respect student journalists

In a letter to college administrators, several prominent groups said that the “nation is currently turning to student journalists … for accurate and timely information”.

“We are horrified and dismayed to see student journalists and their advisers physically attacked, intimidated by police and unfairly restricted in their access to their own buildings,” said the groups, which included the Society for Professional Journalists, the College Media Association, and the Student Press Law Center.

“The maltreatment cannot continue,” they said.

Student journalists are journalists, full stop. And since covering protests at college campuses across the country, they have been and continue to be on the front lines. President Biden expected to speak on Gaza campus protests shortly

The unscheduled public statement comes after a nationwide police crackdown on pro-Palestinian student protesters.

Buses loaded with arrested protesters at UCLA

Reporting for Al Jazeera from UCLA, correspondent Phil Lavelle pointed out a large police bus behind him, which he said was loaded with protesters, many of whom still appear to be in good spirits.

“They’re still very defiant, some of them are talking, others are smiling,” Lavelle said. “We’ve actually heard singing within these buses – they are still singing ‘Free Palestine’.” He added that the California Highway Patrol had said 132 people had been arrested, but that the number could be higher.

Both the pro-Palestine encampment and a pro-Israeli counterprotest site now lay empty. What remains are tents, gas masks, a fire extinguisher, and wooden barricades, which the pro-Palestinian side used to defend themselves after being violently attacked by a pro-Israeli group late on Tuesday.

Pro-Palestine protesters have now gathered at UCLA next to the former encampment.

“They’ve been here for hours, they’re not really causing the police too much concern, they’re chanting, they’re singing,” Lavelle said.

“These protesters are very, very determined, they’ve camped out here for days. And it echoes what we’ve seen at other universities across the country. I’ve been to several of these over the last week, and what we saw at a few of them was that protesters are taken away, booked, and then they’re back. They might not be camping out again, because for them, this is something that will continue and continue.”

Former state dept official who resigned over Gaza cancels talk at Dartmouth

Josh Paul, the highest ranking Biden administration official to resign over its approach to the war in Gaza, has canceled a talk at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire after witnessing the police response to a protest on the campus.

“I arrived at my hotel to find an encampment in the green across the road, a peaceful group of students, faced off by a line of riot police,” he wrote on LinkedIn.

“As I have watched tonight, I have seen a police snatch squad break into the encampment and grab students and faculty one-by-one, and haul them off, as the riot police close the line behind them,” he said, adding he had been “reliably informed that ‘this is being done at the behest of the Dartmouth College administration.'”

He said he “gravely misjudged Dartmouth’s commitment to free and constructive dialogue”, adding he would cancel a planned panel discussion, but would continue with preplanned classroom discussions and private conversations.

Protesters in Paris say some students on hunger strike

An unknown number of student protesters from Paris’s Sciences Po university have decided to go on hunger strike in a bid to get their demands met by university administrators.

Sophie, a student protester at Sciences Po, reported the hunger strikes to Al Jazeera following a meeting between student protesters and university administrators in the French capital. Large protests were held at universities in Paris last week, including Sciences Po and the Sorbonne.

But Sophie said that none of the students’ demands had been met, including for their universities to cut ties with Israeli universities.

Are protesters’ freedom of speech and expression rights being protected?

Joseph Stepansky

Al Jazeera senior producer

The Constitution of the United States provides sweeping protections for freedom of speech and expression.

Public universities – like UCLA – must afford those rights to students. Most private universities also promise similar rights, and civil rights groups argue such standards should be guaranteed under academic freedom.

At the same time, universities must assure that students are able to access education. How administrators strike that balance can be telling, with many arguing that some universities have enforced policies – or even changed them – to unfairly target pro-Palestine protesters. The practice is known as “viewpoint discrimination”.

The American Civil Liberties Union has also warned about a bill passed in the US House of Representatives yesterday that would expand the definition of anti-Semitism in federal civil rights law. The group warned that the wider definition could be used to further stifle free speech on campuses, particularly when it comes to criticism of Israel.

Encampments create space to connect through solidarity: Protester

Lauren Victoria Ruiz, a UCLA protester, reflected on the many people she has met amid the demonstration.

“Every culture, creed, gender, sexuality, religion, every single person is represented at these marches, at these meetings, at these encampments,” she told Al Jazeera.

“I’m Indigenous to the New Mexico area. As an Indigenous woman, I didn’t understand my own story, my own pain, until I met Palestinian women who had experienced the same thing,” she said. “I didn’t realise how similar our stories are.”

UCLA professor detained during police crackdown: Student newspaper

UCLA’s student newspaper, the Daily Bruin, has reported that at least one university professor was detained alongside students when police broke up the pro-Palestine encampment.

The paper cited another professor who was in the encampment as saying that students had also been “visibly injured” by law enforcement, who fired stun grenades and “violently dragged” some of them off of the site.

“Faculty are standing to bear witness to this unnecessary horror”, Graeme Blair, associate professor of political science, told the Daily Bruin via text message.

‘People will be back. This is not the end’

Live Al Jazeera footage shows dozens of detained protesters waiting in line to be processed chanting slogans, such as “Free Palestine”.

A detained protester told Al Jazeera this was not the end of the protest movement.

“People will be back. It’s not the end,” he said. “Until the genocide ends and the funding … The billions of dollars spent.”

The protester said his message to UCLA was that this was “very disappointing”.

UCLA protesters have nothing to lose now

Phil Lavelle

Reporting from UCLA, Los Angeles, US

Every now and then, we’ll see a traffic cone, a chunk of metal come flying over the fence, so we’ve already kind of got to keep our distance.

A few minutes ago, we saw a bit of action: A bunch of protesters in zip ties were held to one side so that the police could take them to be processed.

We know that there are about seven or eight police jail vans parked offsite.

These protesters are not going quiet, you can hear them shouting “Free Palestine”.

Protesters are going to be here for as long as they can. Every last man and woman here will be here until they are forcibly removed.

They’ve got nothing to lose now; they’re not going to walk out of here and not be arrested. Of course, they’ve dedicated days and days to this cause, and they believe in it as a wider cause.

They believe that the university should divest from any organisations that do business with Israel, that they should be transparent about its dealings with Israel and, of course, there’s the wider issue of the ceasefire.

Israeli president smears US protesters as anti-Semitic

Isaac Herzog has claimed US universities where pro-Palestine protests are taking place have been “contaminated by hatred and anti-Semitism”.

The Israeli president provided no evidence that such views are driving the protests, whose leaders, moved by the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, say they are calling for a ceasefire in the war-battered territory and divestment from Israel.

Over the last week, police have arrested hundreds of peaceful protesters at the demonstrations, now spanning dozens of US universities, most recently at UCLA as we have been reporting.

US student protesters an ‘inspiration’ to other societies

Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara says the pro-Palestine protests sweeping across US campuses are an “inspiration”.

He said their actions are putting other societies, including Arab ones, to shame because of the capacity of the young protesters “to resist, to struggle internally, for justice in a land far away from them, on principle and to pay the price”.

He also said the protests have been met with a degree of cynicism by US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, Bishara added, “when young people take a stand, it’s because they want to fight the fight that is worth fighting, not just the fight that they can win, and hence there is a lesson to be learned”.

He also noted that protesters at Brown University have already won the battle to force a vote on divestment from Israel.

Injuries reported at UCLA

Videographer Sean Beckner-Carmitchel, who is at UCLA, says that as the night progresses the number of demonstrators at UCLA has decreased.

“We are starting to see demonstrators in smaller numbers but we don’t see them stop,” he told Al Jazeera.

“Some look very tired, some look perhaps as though they feel they are resigned to fighting but that they don’t believe that they will overall win,” Beckner-Carmitchel said.

“I also a few people with injuries, things like large bruises. I saw one person who had to get their eyes washed away with water.”

The European leg of the Eras Tour is finally here. After a two-month hiatus, Taylor Swift is refreshing her setlist following the release of The Tortured Poets Department. Read on for the updated setlist for the Eras Tour (so far) in Paris .

On May 9, Swift performed her first of four shows in Paris to kick off the European leg of her high-grossing tour. Throughout the three-hour set, Swifties took note of various changes to the performance, including new glittery outfits and the addition of tracks from her latest album, TTPD .

The most notable change of the night was when Swift added seven tracks from her latest album to her setlist. This included abbreviated renditions of "But Daddy I Love Him," "Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me?", "Fortnight," "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived," and "I Can Do It With A Broken Heart," along with samples from "So High School" and "Down Bad."

Unfortunately, Swift had to trim some tracks from her lengthy set to make room for the new songs. Songs that were dropped include “The Archer,” “The Last Great American Dynasty,” “The 1,” “’Tis the Damn Season,” and “Tolerate It.”

Swift also switched up the sequence of her eras by moving the Red era earlier in the setlist and shifting the reputation era to a later slot. Additionally, she merged the Folklore and evermore eras together. “On The Eras Tour we have now reunited the sisters!” she told the audience. “You can call it Folklore , Evermore or you can call it the sister albums!”

Also, when the singer enters her Speak Now era, there is a new transition with florals on the screen while her dancers perform a new routine before she sings “Enchanted” (which was previously “Long Live,” which she added mid-tour last year).
