Nature Park Palić

Nature Park Palić - lake and part of the settlement Palić, with an area of 712 hectares + 1698 hectares of protection zone.

Characteristic are the Natural values (Lake Palćc, the old park and several habitats of protected species), Cultural values (Great park, several buildings of exceptional architectural value, Palić villas) and long tradition of bathing, spa and resort.

Natural values

Palić lake is a shallow lowland lake, about 5.5 km long. It is known for bird islands, where a large number of birds nest. The most striking are the noisy colonies of herons and seagulls.

On the islands, for a few years now, a blackheaded seagulls nest and this is the only place in our country where this species is currently nesting.

Of the rare mammals, the otters and bats should be mentioned, which are on the list of protected species.

Cultural values

The beginning of the construction of spa on Palić dates from the second half of the 19th century, when several buildings and bathing sites were built next to the lake.

In 1904, the city of Subotica announced a competition for the construction of a bathing place in Palić, where it was emphasized that the aim of the competition was to raise the bathing spots in Palić to the level of other bathing places of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

The project plan was made by architects Marcell Comor and Dezső Jakab in the Art Nouveau style, in the variant of "Hungarian style". New facilities were: Watertower, Big Terrace, Music Pavilion, Women's lido, tavern, buildings where water treatment was done, new hotel with two floors and more. These facilities were completed and handed over to use in 1912.

Later in 1950, in harmony with the environment, the Summer Stage was built in the park, which today connects with the International Film Festival and the Palić Summer Evenings.

In the development of the bathing place, multiple sports champion, Lajoš Vermeš, played an important role in organizing important international Olympic Games with the character of the Olympics since 1880.

Nature Monument - The Pedunculate Oak Tree in Palić

In the settlement Palić, in the streets of Bela Bartok and Šandor Petefi and at Laslo Madjar Square, as a monument of nature, 31 trees of oak are protected.

Nature monument - The Pedunculate Oak tree in Palić is a protected area of local significance - 3rd category and it was proclaimed with the aim of preserving the dendrological and horticultural value of old oak trees and valuable specimens of other species due to their authenticity, integrity, landscape attractiveness, age, dimensions and preservation, as a valuable element of the landscape structure of the settlement Palić.

Fishing areas in protected areas

Fishing areas are used for recreational and sport fishing under the Fisheries Management Program. The fishing area is maintained by a water bailiff, a person who is employed by the user and has a license for water bailiff.

The water bailiff has the capacity of an official person and is authorized, on the basis of the law, to legitimize a person in the fishing area, inspect the vehicles and vessels, temporarily seize objects or tools.

In the north of Serbia, towards the border with Hungary, lies Lake Palić, a true jewel in the crown of the country’s recreational, cultural and spa tourism.

Water and clay from Lake Palić have been used for medicinal purposes since the 18 th Century. In 1845, the “Donja trščara” Inn was built here, laying the foundation for the future of Palić as bathing grounds and a spa centre . Since then, millions of visitors have visited the spa, enjoying the relaxing atmosphere and medicinal properties of its hot springs and clay. If you prefer active holidays , Palić offers a wealth of sports activities for you to choose from. Cycle around the lake on the marked cycling trail or choose one of the hiking routes and enjoy exploring every inch of the area. Rent a kayak or a pedal boat or take an organised boat tour of Lake Palić and spend unforgettable moments on the water. Animal lovers can enjoy organised birdwatching trips where they will be able to spot over 200 species of birds, including over 50 endangered species. Anglers can also enjoy the attractions of Lake Palić, where they can test their skills in water which is abundant in fish. And if, during your stay on the serene Lake Palić, you find yourself longing for the city buzz, you can always take a trip to the nearby city of Subotica and enjoy the most exquisite examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Serbia, explore the city’s galleries and take in the beauty of its magnificent sacral buildings. Children will be delighted to visit the Subotica Zoo , with more than 150 animal species on display, as well as the botanical garden within the zoo, which is home to numerous plant species specific to this area. The local climate and the sandy terrain of the Subotica region give a specific flavour to the autochthonous wine varieties, which are produced according to the centuries-old tradition of this region. Enjoy the wine tastings organised by local wineries and restaurants. Experienced chefs and sommeliers will match the traditional Serbian varieties of wine with the local cuisine, which is a unique blend of culinary traditions of the various ethnic groups living in the north of Serbia. Once a year, Palić hosts a famous European Film Festival , which has, over the two decades of its existence, welcomed numerous cinephiles, as well as famous actors, directors and crew members from all over the "Old Continent". During the seven days of the Festival, Palić becomes the European film capital, capturing the imagination of its audience and welcoming them year after year in ever-increasing numbers. With its rich flora and fauna, mineral water and clay, sports and cultural events, Lake Palić really does offer something for everyone, catering to tourists of all different ages and interests.

Comprehensive travel guide including Subotica what to see and Palic what to see.

During our visit to Subotica and Palic, we fell in love with these two towns close to the Hungarian border. Don’t miss out on these two gems while travelling Serbia! Here’s our comprehensive Subotica and Palic travel guide:

Where is Subotica Located?

What is subotica known for, is subotica worth visiting, where to stay in subotica, is subotica safe, subotica where to eat, best things to do in subotica, how to get from subotica to palic, where is palic located, what is palic known for, is palic worth visiting, can you swim in palic lake, palic where to eat, best things to do in palic, subotica travel guide.

Subotica is located in the very north of Serbia only a 15-minute drive from the Hungarian border.

Subotica is best known for its stunning Art Nouveau architecture.

Subotica is absolutely worth a visit. Due to its location close to the border, it’s also a great stopover destination on your way from Serbia to Hungary.

We stayed at Hostel Put Svile and can 100% recommend it. The location is right at the bus station which is amazing for backpackers. It’s impeccably clean and the owners are always there to help and give advice.

Although Subotica is a border town (and border towns do not have the best reputation in general) we felt very safe.

Subotica has a small-town feel and I felt very safe – also walking around alone as a woman.

  • Bates is the number 1 recommendation for food in Subotica.
  • Bates Expres is a cantine-style restaurant on the other side of the road. It is amazing if Bates is full or if you need a lower price point.
  • Speaking of cheap, cantine-style restaurants: There is one at the bus station which is surprisingly decent.
  • If you’re looking for Western-style food,  Boss Caffe  is your go-to address.

1. Stroll Along Korzo

The main pedestrian street of Subotica is lined with beautiful buildings as well as plenty of shops and cafes.

Picture of Korzo, Subotica

2. Subotica Savings Bank Palace

Designed in the Hungarian style, it was built in 1908 for the Subotica Savings Bank. Look out for the symbols: Squirrel for diligence, beehive for thrift, owl for wisdom.

3. Subotica City Hall

Constructed between 1908 and 1912, the City Hall seamlessly blends the decorative elements of Art Nouveau with a touch of Hungarian folklore romance including ceramic floral motifs and intricately forged wrought ironwork.

You can visit from Tuesday to Friday at noon.

Picture of Subotica City Hall

4. National Theatre

The National Theatre was built in the classic style and is characterised by six Corinthian columns.

5. McDonald’s

Don’t miss the stunning Art Nouveau interior of the Subotica McDonald’s.

Picture of Subotica McDonald’s

6. City Library

The most distinguishing feature of the neo-baroque building of the Public Library is the two Atlases carrying one of the nicest balconies in the city.

7. Subotica Synagogue

Constructed in 1902, Subotica Synagogue is one of Europe's finest examples of religious architecture in the Art Nouveau style. It is also Europe’s second-largest synagogue. Adorned with stylised tulips, carnations, and peacock feathers, it is a typical example of the Hungarian style.

You have to pay a small fee to enter but it’s absolutely worth it!

Picture of Subotica Synagogue

8. Chapel of St. Roch

A small Roman-Catholic chapel on Matka Vukovica and a nice pit stop on your way to the cathedral.

9. St. Theresa of Avila Cathedral

Constructed in the late Baroque style, the cathedral is dedicated to St. Theresa of Avila, the patron saint of Subotica.

10. Raichle Palace

This is probably the finest example of Art Nouveau architecture in Subotica. Nowadays, it houses the Modern Art Gallery “Likovni Susret”.

Picture of Raichle Palace

11. Orthodox Church of the Ascension of Our Lord

Constructed in 1726, the Baroque church stands on the highest point of the old city.

12. Subotica City Museum

The Art Nouveau building houses archaeological, ethnographic, historical, art and natural collections.

Buses from Subotica to Palic run super regularly. Bus line 6 leaves from the stops along Maksima Gorkog around every 20 minutes.

Some buses run to and from the main bus station as well. We took the direct bus at 9:00 a.m. which is a great choice if you stay at Hostel Put Svile .

Palic Travel Guide

Palic is located a 15-minute drive east of Subotica.

Palic is most known for Lake Palic.

Palic is absolutely worth a visit, especially if you like

  • Spa architecture.

While there are several baths and beaches around Lake Palic, the water is not considered safe for swimming.

The best places to eat in Palic are

  • Paprika Carda for local fish.
  • Feher Akac for Hungarian cuisine.

1. Grand Terrace

At the time of its opening in 1912, the Grand Terrace was used as a multipurpose facility including a monumental ballroom. It was constructed in the style of Hungarian Art Nouveau which is especially visible on the two open terraces.

2. Owl's Tower

Bagojvar, translated as the Owl’s Tower, was constructed in 1892 as part of the sports complex established by Lajoš Vermeš, a distinguished athlete and the founder of the 1880 Palic Olympics.

Picture of Owl's Tower Palic

3. Vila Lujza

Vila Lujza was constructed together with the Owl’s Tower in the Swiss style, characterised by the extensive use of wood and tiles made from the renowned Zsolnay ceramics.

4. Women’s Lido

The Women’s Lido is another example of the Art Nouveau style. The wooden building features an abundance of folk art details.

At the time of its construction in 1912, its primary purpose was to shield female swimmers from the prying eyes of curious men.

Today, the site has transformed into a cafe.

5. Men’s Lido

An open wooden construction which is the men’s equivalent to the Women’s Lido.

6. Palic Sign

A nice photo spot.

Picture of Palic sign

7. Paddle Steamer

Back in the day, you could go on steamboat cruises on Lake Palic. Nowadays it’s abandoned but still a nice photo spot.

8. Stroll Along the Lake

There are plenty of small sights along the Palic lakefront which should not be missed like

  • Lajoš Vermeš Monument.
  • Music Pavillion.
  • Memorial Fountain.
  • Blue Palic Vases.

9. Winery Vinarija Zvonko Bogdan

The building and the scenery of the winery are stunning. You can sample wine during the opening hours. If you want to take a tour, be smarter than us and pre-book!

Picture of Winery Vinarija Zvonko Bogdan

10. Water Tower

The Palic Water Tower, located next to the main road, is a symbol of Palic. Unfortunately, it was under construction when we visited.

11. Post Office

Located near the Water Tower along Szeged Road, one of Palic's finest villas was built by industrialist Rafael Hertman in the late 19th century. The summer house, adorned with a beautifully decorative wooden porch, showcases lace ornamentation in the Swiss architectural style.

Picture of Palic Post Office

12. Art Studio - Likovni Atelje Maria Karlović Gabrić

A small art studio you can visit for free along Splitska Aleja which is lined with many nice villas.

According to a legend that the locals will gladly tell you about, Palić is a lake formed by shepherd Paul tears, who lost his flock there and because of that water in the lake is salty.

According to another story, legends say that the lake is a remnant of the Pannonian Sea, that existed in this region in ancient times. In any case, if you want to spend your vacation in Serbia in nature like in a fairy tale where you can swim, walk in nature, but also enjoy a good time and fun, Palić Lake is the right place for you!

It is a lake that has been one of the most visited locations in Serbia for many years, primarily because of its landscaping, beauty and various opportunities for rest and recreation. Palić Lake is located in Vojvodina, 8 kilometers away from Subotica, one of the most beautiful cities in Serbia, so all visitors that visit the lake can easily spend their time in this city as well. It is the largest natural lake in Serbia.

The lake, almost 5km in diameter and with a maximum depth of 3.5 meters, has three beaches, warm water and a pleasant atmosphere. The shore of the lake is 17 kilometers long and is arranged along its entire length. Because of this, walking tours are also attractive, as well as fishing, bird watching, and nature park tours around the lake itself.

When it comes to newly built hotels, restaurants, smaller villas and different accommodation capacities, Palić Lake becomes a place you should not miss, however old you are and whatever your interests are! In the summer months, the European Film Festival is held in Palić when this place becomes a meeting place for many, above all, regional filmmakers, actors and critics.

Fans of "seventh art" can enjoy a pleasant atmosphere here by watching the latest film creations, and one of the main specifics of the festival is the fact that it is one of the few manifestations of this type with 100% European content. In the immediate vicinity of the lake is an attractive zoo where most animals are not housed in cages but are free to walk around fenced parts of the park, which makes this place very interesting, especially for the youngest, but also for all animal lovers.

Even if you don't go to the zoo, the wildlife around the lake will enchant you and leave you breathless. The environment is a protected nature park in Serbia, and visitors can see many species, many of which are rare in the world. There is also a rare orchid species - the swamp orchid.

Fact check: Trump falsely claims Biden has homes in four vacation destinations and ‘more homes than I do’

F ormer President Donald Trump falsely claimed Tuesday that President Joe Biden has more homes than Trump does and that Biden has homes in four expensive holiday destinations.

At a campaign rally in Florida, Trump argued that Biden has spent excessive time on vacation during his presidency. “And mansions are in – think of this – here’s a guy that’s been a politician all his life. He’s got homes in the Virgin Islands, Nantucket, Lake Tahoe, Kiawah Island. I mean, where the hell did they get all this money, Byron?” Trump said , speaking to Republican Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida. “He’s got more homes than I do. What the hell is going on with him?”

Facts First : Trump’s claims are false. First, Biden does not have homes in any of the four places Trump claimed he does; rather, Biden has stayed at others’ homes in those places. Second, Trump owns more homes than Biden does. Biden owns two houses, both in Delaware, and there is no mystery about how he afforded them.

Biden’s homes

Biden’s primary home, in a suburb of Wilmington, Delaware , is a 6,850-square-foot house Biden and his wife Jill Biden built on a lot they bought for $350,000 in 1996, 23 years into his tenure as a US senator representing Delaware.

Biden’s vacation home is a beach house near Rehoboth Beach , Delaware, that he and Jill Biden bought for about $2.7 million in 2017 . They made the purchase after they signed a lucrative three-book deal earlier that year as private citizens following his vice presidency.

The Bidens disclosed the book income in tax filings they released to the public in 2019. The filings showed they had earned a total of about $15.6 million in 2017 and 2018. About $13.3 million of that was from the book deal and related paid speeches.

Biden’s vacations at others’ homes

As president, Biden has stayed at the homes of wealthy associates in the four vacation destinations Trump mentioned. Biden does not have his own homes in any of them.

Biden has stayed at a US Virgin Islands home owned by Democratic donors Bill and Connie Neville, whom the White House has described as his friends; at a Nantucket, Massachusetts home owned by private equity titan and longtime friend David Rubenstein; at a Lake Tahoe-area Nevada home owned by prominent Democratic donor Tom Steyer; and a Kiawah Island, South Carolina home owned by campaign donor Maria Allwin.

The White House said in 2023 that the Biden family was renting the Steyer home for “fair market value,” and Politico reported in 2021 that the Bidens were renting the Rubenstein home, but the White House has not released specifics on the financial arrangements related to their stays at the four properties; it’s possible that some of the stays have been free .

Regardless, Trump’s assertion that they are Biden’s own properties is wrong.

Trump’s homes

There is no comprehensive current list of the homes Trump owns, and it can be hard to separate his personal home ownership from his business interests – for example, to decide if unsold condominiums in Trump developments should count as Trump homes.

But it is clear by any reasonable measure that the billionaire real estate businessman owns more homes than Biden’s two.

Trump’s primary residence is at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. He continues to own his former primary residence, a triplex penthouse at his Trump Tower in New York City. He also has a mansion on more than 200 acres in the suburbs of New York City , a private villa at his Bedminster golf club in New Jersey, and an estate on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin that his company has tried to sell for years .

The survey showed that 40.4 per cent of respondents plan to leave home for summer vacation this year, compared to only 25 per cent of those surveyed a year ago.

“This summer, a higher proportion of Canadians are planning to go on vacation, marking a significant uptick in travel intent despite the challenges posed by ongoing inflation and geopolitical uncertainties,” said HelloSafe Canada spokesperson Alexandre Desoutter.

“Moreover, this surge in travel is particularly encouraging in the current context, as it reflects a collective determination to seek normalcy and enjoyment amidst financial and global instabilities.”

Desoutter added that the trend is a positive indicator for the Canadian economy, suggesting a resilient consumer confidence and a desire to return to pre-pandemic leisure activities.

Out of HelloSafe’s respondents this year, 35.1 per cent said they have no plans to go on holiday, while 25.4 per cent were still undecided.

Among those who won’t be going on vacation this summer, 37.7 per cent blame inflation, which topped the list of reasons respondents gave.

Meanwhile, 32.4 per cent of respondents said they wanted to go away at another time of year, potentially to take advantage of lower prices and more moderate tourist numbers. And 27.2 per cent said they wanted to enjoy their free time at home, while 2.7 per cent cited health reasons as an impediment to vacationing.

Inflation also seemed to influence where Canadians plan to spend their vacation, given the strain of higher travel costs on household budgets, said HelloSafe. There’s a growing tendency for Canadians to opt for destinations that aren’t too far away.

The poll said 30.8 per cent of respondents intending to take vacations this summer plan to do so within their home province, while 27. 9 per cent plan to visit another Canadian province. That’s a total of 58.7 per cent of respondents who will be staying within Canada’s borders.

For the rest of the vacation planners, 15.6 per cent favoured the United States as their summer destination, while 12.4 per cent and 9.1 per cent plan to travel to more distant destinations such as Europe and South America, respectively.

HelloSafe said it surveyed 1,045 Canadian residents online between May 1 and 31.

6 Beaches to Love This July 4 (and All Summer Long)

From Hawaii to Rhode Island, here are some of our favorite shores on which to enjoy some hard-earned R & R this Independence Day holiday.

People frolic on a coastline whose shore grows with wild grasses. The sky and the water are a tranquil blue.

By The New York Times

Perhaps you already have a favorite beach — one where already you know how to nab a free parking space, where the best shady spot is and when the soft-serve truck makes its rounds.

If you’re looking to mix it up this July 4, or throughout the summer, here are six beach destinations around the United States to inspire a new adventure.

Keep in mind that AAA projects that this Independence Day holiday period will be a record breaker . Nearly 71 million people are expected to travel 50 or more miles from home between June 29 and July 7, including more than 60 million on the roads — so be safe and leave plenty of time for the drive.

Which U.S. beach do you think is unbeatable? Let us know in the comments (or protect your secret — we get it).

Discover a refreshing gem in Rhode Island

The next time you’re sitting in traffic, inching toward the Hamptons, Cape Cod or another congested beach hot spot, consider the virtues of South County, R.I. (known officially as Washington County). This gem of the Ocean State, with 100 miles of coastline, is two and a half hours from Manhattan and one and a half hours from Boston, and it requires no planes or ferries. Between the coastal communities of Watch Hill and Charlestown, 14 public beaches beckon.

Sprint down an epic dune to sparkling Lake Michigan

Racing down the Dune Climb, a 300-foot sand dune, is one of the most popular activities in a corner of northwest Michigan called Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Kids gallop and roll down, their squeals as high-pitched as the cries of the herring gulls overhead. At the bottom you’re sweaty and breathless — but awaiting you is shimmering, sapphire-blue Lake Michigan, endless as an ocean. Just be ready for the oxygen-sucking, slipping-and-sliding clamber back uphill.

Stroll and splash along a serene beach path on Maui

The Wailea Beach Path, which meanders along Maui’s southern coast, reflects the island’s almost contradictory personas: On one side of the path, opulent resorts flaunt swim-up bars and nightly torch-lighting ceremonies. A subtler drama unfolds on the opposite side, where native flora like honey-scented naio bushes, spiky hala trees and hibiscus blossoms flourish along the rocky shoreline. Cool off along the way with dips in the waves.

Take a loop to hidden Oregon beaches

West Coast road trippers who stick to U.S. 101, the main north-south coastal highway, miss out on something spectacular. The Three Capes Scenic Loop winds 40 miles along windswept cliffs, through towering forests of centuries-old Sitka spruce and past charming beaches, including those along Netarts Bay, home to a string of oyster farms.

Seek your “perfect beach” on Puerto Rico’s northern coast

Ever visited a beach so impossibly sublime, you fear it may not live up your fond memory of it? For the writer Mya Guarnieri, that superb stretch of golden sand was Punta Caracoles Beach (as it is listed on some maps) in Puerto Rico, about an hour’s drive west of San Juan. Her journey to rediscover it took her to several others on the island’s northern coast — including La Poza del Obispo, whose natural rock formation creates a crystal clear pool that is perfect for floating — that could become your perfect beach, too.

Pick your paradise along Florida’s 30A

The coast along State Road 30A — a 24-mile stretch of the Florida Panhandle — is famous for its soft “sugar sand,” pulverized quartz crystal washed downstream from Appalachia thousands of years ago. Dig your toes in at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, which offers three miles of undeveloped coast. Look for the sail-shaped dune rising 25 feet that gave the park its name. (Before swimming at beaches along 30A, visitors should check the beach for warning flags that may indicate dangerous conditions.)

Traveling off-peak travel season can save you money and improve your overall travel experience. This is when you’ll see the least amount of tourists and shorter lines, and everything from flights to hotels is typically much cheaper.

But when is off-peak travel? It depends on where you go. For example, low-season months in Europe typically occur during the colder winter months. However, in other places, like most of Asia, the off-season is June to October because of the rainy season, according to Projects Abroad.

Summer is one of the most popular travel seasons, but you can save money by scheduling your vacation days for a different time of year.

Key West, FL

  • Cheapest time to visit: September to November or May to June

Finding lower prices in Key West isn’t easy no matter what time of the year you go, but you’ll have better luck during the off months between September and November, according to Travel + Leisure. Prices are generally the highest in the winter and during the peak summer months, but another sweet spot is May and June.

  • Cheapest time to visit: Late spring and early fall

Hawaii is one of the world’s top vacation destinations, and finding the best deals may take some work. Hotel rates are the highest during the Christmas and New Year holidays, as well as during spring break and summer vacation, Travel + Leisure reported. Hawaiian Airlines suggests booking a trip in late spring and early fall before Thanksgiving if you want to save money. Travel + Leisure also recommends hopping aboard a Hawaiian cruise to skip the airfare and hotel costs and choosing an itinerary outside of peak tourist season.

  • Cheapest time to visit: November to February

Bermuda has the lowest prices between November and February, but according to Lonely Planet, flights and hotels typically have the lowest prices in November. Bring a sweater if you aren’t used to cooler weather. While the sun is still strong, temperatures drop to between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit during this time.

Quebec City

  • Cheapest time to visit: November and April

If you prefer to travel north, Quebec City is the least crowded and has lower prices on hotels and flights during the off-season in November and April, according to Travel + Leisure. You may see snow if you go toward the end of the year, but April is also a great month to visit as it’s peak maple syrup season.

New York City

  • Cheapest time to visit: January to March

From taking a nice stroll through Central Park to ice skating at Rockefeller Center, The Big Apple is a hot vacation spot during the summer, fall and early winter. To get the best deals on flights and hotels, consider visiting between January and March, according to Tours By Foot.

  • Cheapest time to visit: April to May and September to October

AAA Living reported that the periods from April through May and from September through October. Skyscanner reported that the cheapest month to fly to Costa Rica is September, as prices can be up to 19% cheaper than the average yearly flight price. Avoid going in December, as prices can be as much as 30% higher than average.

Summer vacation is only getting more expensive for parents, with some spending thousands of dollars on camp: It's 'highway robbery'

  • Summer camps and care cost parents thousands, pushing many into debt or altered work schedules.
  • Parents are facing rising childcare costs, exacerbated by post-pandemic economic pressures.
  • Despite financial strain, parents view summer activities as essential for their children's wellbeing.

Insider Today

Between taekwondo, time at the local community center, and other types of camp and summer programs , Paige Connell and her husband will end up spending over $6,000 for her two oldest kids to stay busy this summer.

Connell created a spreadsheet to keep track of the varying costs, times, and weeks for these programs. It shows that the family paid $360 per week for one of the children and $345 for the other for recreation department programs. One of her children is attending taekwondo, which costs $300. One child will partake in a music camp for several days, which costs over $500.

Camp is not the only summer expense for Connell's family. They also took a week-long family vacation at a beach house.

The 34-year-old mom of four said most of these summer camps were already paid up front earlier this year. Connell, who also has two younger kids who attend daycare, said of the older children's camps, "that's kind of our childcare for the summer" given she and her husband work full time.

"It is something that we budget for, so we try to plan accordingly for how we're going to pay for it, and obviously in combination with paying for our other childcare throughout the year," she said.

Summer fun may be priceless for kids, but it's increasingly costly for their parents . Some go into debt to pay off a summer; others adjust their work hours, scramble to find care, or have to deal with their children feeling left behind by peers headed to pricey summer programs.

It's a function of a system parents say isn't cohesive with the needs of working caretakers, like how school ends before many professionals' workday or how daycares sometimes have sporadic schedules. And, like other facets of the economy, it's something where costs are only growing.

For parents, "it's such a hard dichotomy because obviously summer's exciting, kids are out of school, they're excited for the opportunity to spend more time with them," Courtney Alev, Credit Karma's consumer financial advocate, told BI. "But this need to continue to find additional childcare — and often more expensive — can just add a lot of stress to parents."

Why summer camps are so expensive, and what it means for families

Tom Rosenberg, president and CEO of the American Camp Association, is well aware of camps' costs and demands.

"The price of camp has gone up as the costs of operating a camp have gone up, but the camp operators in general are not able to raise their prices sufficiently to cover the increase in their costs," Rosenberg said. Camp directors, like childcare providers , have struggled to staff up and boosted wages to try to lure in young adults in a competitive market.

"Kids need more today, so we need more staff to manage to take care of the children," Rosenberg said, comparing needs to pre-pandemic times. "Camp experiences are unique opportunities for them to learn and grow undistracted by social media and technology and with a measure of independence from their parents and family."

Camps are also coming up against an expensive — yet quiet — headwind that's eating away at wallets: Skyrocketing insurance costs.

"Both on the property and casualty side of things, insurance costs for youth programs like this are through the roof, frankly, if they can get coverage," Rosenberg said. "There's food and transportation, the cost of capital to expand their facility to be able to take additional campers in or to just operate their program; everything has gone up."

Rosenberg said the challenge "is to be able to serve more kids in an affordable way given the inflationary environment that we are currently in."

For Alex Mnatsakanov, summer is worth going into debt.

Related stories

The 45-year-old single dad, who shares custody of his daughter, describes her as creative and extroverted. Summer is a chance for the pre-teen who dreams of being on Broadway to hit the stage at theater camp and star in at least three different shows.

"It's great seeing her be confident on stage — and she is very confident on stage — but it's also, I feel like, has been tremendous for her mental health as an outlet to support her through things that have gone on in her life," he said.

And so, he and his co-parent are shelling out around $3,000 total this year for two different day camps that add up to six weeks of activities — but that's only about half of the summer. He said those costs usually end up on a credit card. But that investment is worth it to not see his kid languish bored all summer.

"The experience, the outlet for all of that creativity, for all that interaction with peers is worth it for me to potentially grow my debt," he said.

Indeed, an Intuit Credit Karma survey of 2,006 American adults in June found that 29% of parents said they can't save money during the summer because of childcare costs, and over a third said they need to adjust their work hours because care is so expensive.

Meanwhile, 23% of parents, among those who reported they'd be paying for summer programs, expected to pay over $1,000 a month per child during the summer. Broadly, 61% of parents with kids under 18 years old said it "feels even more expensive to raise kids in the summer months." And 28%, among those who noted enrolling their kids in programs, said they planned on taking on debt to help cover the costs of summer programs.

"That — even if it's necessary for certain families — is really concerning given that credit card interest rates and debt, they're at really high levels right now," Alev said. "And so going into that debt now is likely going to end up costing you a lot more over time."

Connell, the parent with two of her children attending various camps this summer, noted that she understands how expensive it is to operate and staff camps and that the people working there "deserve to be paid well."

"I think, unfortunately, the costs are very prohibitive to parents," Connell said, adding that government subsidies and funding for camps and care "would go a long way" for workers at these places and families.

It's not just a summer problem. "I think the cost of childcare is a major infrastructure failure in our country. I think it is disproportionately impacting women who are leaving the workforce because they can't afford childcare," she said.

And other small expenses — like sending a lunch or giving kids spending money for camp excursions — add up. Dana Bowling, a mom of an 11-year-old and a 9-year-old, said she pays for a hot lunch daily for her kids' day camp, and then also for a frozen treat — she knew if she didn't pay for that one, she'd hear from her kids every day saying that everyone else got one. On top of all of that, some parents are forking over thousands for services that help their kids pack and prepare for camp .

Bowling wants to give her kids what she sees as the important cultural experience of going to camp. Bowling, who lives in LA, sends her children to a Jewish summer camp, which has long been held as an important cultural touchstone in the American Jewish community.

"I think it's a big deal, and it's kind of necessary for kids to experience those things. So it's a non-negotiable, but because of that, it's so expensive," she said. She estimates that, just for day camp, they're spending around $150 to $200 per kid a day; sleepaway camp is running them around $6,000 per kid for three weeks. To make costs manageable, she uses a payment plan to pay throughout the year for camp.

"It's kind of like highway robbery because they can charge whatever they want, and we'll have to do it," Bowling said.

While camps and other summer activities can be costly, there are some options for assistance out there.

"We do offer financial aid at all of our locations, and no family is ever turned away because of an inability to pay," Lisa Garcia, senior executive of youth programs, afterschool and day camps at the YMCA of Greater New York, said. "At the Y, we really want to make sure summer camp is accessible for all."

Garcia, who said she was a camp counselor back in the day, sees the benefits of attending camp. "It's where campers can be silly and be who they are and explore who they want to be, fine-tune their skills, develop those skills that they already have," Garcia said.

Some parents agree that summer experiences are worth the cost.

"I do feel like the experiences for her are worth it. I'm a strong believer in less about material things and more about experiences where you do create memories that last a lifetime — not to sound super cliché," Mnatsakanov said of his daughter. He added: "I want her to five, six years down the road when she's a teenager and doesn't want to do camps — because she's too cool for school — have these memories from her tweens."

Can I cancel a vacation rental booking amid Tropical Depression Beryl? What to know

summer trip palic

Tropical Depression Beryl has snarled plenty of travel plans this week, with thousands of flights canceled and cruise lines rerouting itineraries. And if you have a vacation rental booked, you may be thinking twice about your trip.

The storm was forecasted to move northeast after bringing severe weather to Texas on Monday. Millions of homes and businesses in the Lone Star State were without power Tuesday. The storm – which was the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record , weakening to a tropical storm after making landfall in Texas as a Category 1 hurricane – also caused flooding and trapped people in cars. At least eight people died in Texas and Louisiana.

Here’s what travelers should know:

What options do vacation rental guests have amid Tropical Depression Beryl?

Travelers with vacation rental bookings have options in the face of severe weather.

Major platform Vrbo recently added a new Extenuating Circumstances policy that requires hosts to give refunds no matter the property’s cancellation rules amid “unforeseen large-scale travel disruptions,” the company said in a statement.

On Airbnb, for its part, cancellations are typically subject to the listing’s policy, but big events that “prevent or legally prohibit completion of a reservation” may fall under a separate Major Disruptive Events Policy. The platform did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s questions about specific impacts or policy changes related to Beryl.

What is Vrbo’s cancellation policy?

The new Extenuating Circumstances policy doesn’t explicitly cover hurricanes during hurricane season but would apply to ripple effects like broad power outages. The platform will also refund service fees to travelers in those cases.

If an event is not covered, however, the listing’s regular policy would apply. “We always encourage hosts to do what they can to work with guests in these cases, and Vrbo has waived host penalties for cancellations in the case of Hurricane/Tropical Depression Beryl, which allows hosts to refund their guests without worry it will affect things like how high they appear in future guests’ searches,” Vrbo said in an emailed statement.

What is Airbnb’s cancellation policy?

When an event falls under Airbnb’s Major Disruptive Events Policy “guests can cancel their reservation and receive a refund, travel credit, and/or other consideration regardless of the reservation’s cancellation policy, and Hosts can cancel without fees or other adverse consequences, although their listing’s calendar will be blocked for the dates of the canceled reservation,” the company said on its website .

The policy covers natural disasters and severe weather – among other events – but there is some fine print. Weather or other conditions deemed “common enough to be foreseeable” in a certain place are only eligible if they result in another covered event, like an order to evacuate. Guests can contact Airbnb to see if their reservation qualifies.

Does insurance cover vacation rental bookings?

Travel insurance can come in handy.

Some comprehensive plans have cancellation coverage if there is a hurricane warning in the policyholder’s destination, typically within 24 to 36 hours before departure, according to Meghan Walch, Director of Product at InsureMyTrip. Cancel for Any Reason options can also allow travelers to cancel up to two days ahead of a trip if they aren’t comfortable going.

“This is a time-sensitive benefit on some plans, meaning that you have to be purchasing your insurance within 10-21 days after making your initial payment/deposit for your trip, and you must insure all prepaid non-refundable trip expenses,” she said in an email. That kind of reimbursement would amount to between 50% and 75% of the insured trip cost.

Comprehensive policies also generally have some coverage “for cancellation due to flight delays of a certain number of hours or destruction of your primary home/destination accommodations by a named storm,” Walch added.

Airbnb vs. Vrbo: Which vacation rental platform is right for you?

“It’s important to purchase your travel insurance policy early before the storm is known,” she said. “Once a storm is named, coverage can’t be purchased for concerns related to that storm.”

Those plans also offer some coverage for lost or damaged luggage and other personal items up to their stated limits. Travelers bringing expensive items with them may want to consider insuring them under homeowners or renters policies which can have “more adequate” coverage limits.

Vacation rental sites may also offer insurance, but Walch warned that those do not typically cover the full cost of a trip, such as flights booked independently.

“When it comes to travel protection offered through a vacation rental site, it’s important to read through the policy and know exactly what is and is not covered,” she added.
