What’s new in European touring? Well, many travelers will be excited to hear about six new Tauck river cruise itineraries for 2024. That’s the most Tauck has ever added in a single year on the continent.

( Tauck’s Esprit is featured above; it will operate two of the new itineraries. Photo by Tauck. )

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be expanding our river cruise offerings in such an unprecedented way, with exciting new itineraries that will appeal to our loyal past guests and new travelers alike,” says Dan Mahar , Tauck’s CEO.

New Tauck Itineraries: Included Pre- or Post-Cruise Stays

One big perk is that several of the new offerings include (within the tour price itself) a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay in new-to-Tauck cities. Among those are Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, and Montreux and Geneva, Switzerland.

So, Tauck’s guests will enjoy a pampering hotel stay at such wonderful properties as these:

  • The Fairmont Le Montreux Palace , Montreux, Switzerland.
  • The Riessersee Hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
  • The InterContinental Geneve in Geneva, Switzerland.

New Tauck “Included” Dinners Ashore

The Meandering Traveler is also enticed by several other inclusions within the tour pricing. Among those is an included dinner ashore in a lavish setting.

So, get ready to enjoy a lavish dinner in an elegant Viennese palace or a Dutch castle nestled on its own private island. Now, that’s something special!

Alternatively, you might go to dinner in an Italian Renaissance-style mansion in a small commune in northern France.

Palais Pallavicini

Featured on Tauck’s new 12-day “ Danube Kingdoms: Bavaria, Austria and Hungary ” itinerary is the Palais Pallavicini in Vienna, Austria. Constructed in 1784, it has served as home to the Pallavicini family for more than 180 years.

Tauck’s guests will enjoy an exclusive evening at  Palais Pallavicini  that includes a reception, gala dinner and classical music played by performers dressed in period clothing.

They’ll “wine and dine” in a palace that has hosted such luminaries as composers Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert. The palace also served as a major filming location for the classic 1934 film “ The Thin Man .”

Operated from Munich, Germany, to Budapest, Hungary, the new “Danube Kingdoms: Bavaria, Austria and Hungary” itinerary includes a four-night, land-based exploration of Bavaria. Guests will stay in hotels in Munich and Partenkirchen, plus enjoy a seven-night cruise along the Danube River.

They’ll have opportunities to explore Passau, Germany; Linz, Salzkammergut, Melk and Vienna, Austria; Cesky Krumlov, the Czech Republic; Bratislava, Slovakia; and Budapest.

This Tauck river cruise is operated by the 130-passenger Savor or 130-passenger Joy. Pricing is from $6,990 per person, double occupancy (plus airfare).

Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Former Home

Guests on Tauck’s new 10-day “ Three Rivers: Danube, Main & Rhine ” cruise, priced from $5,990 per person, double occupancy (plus airfare), will be treated to an evening at the 130-year-old Schlosshotel Kronberg .

So, what’s that? Well, first, it’s the former residence of German Empress Victoria Friedrich . But there’s also a pretty interesting U.S. connection.

Tauck's Savor is shown in Wurzburg, Germany. Photo courtesy of Tauck.

Schlosshotel Kronberg housed a U.S. Army officers club during the post-World War II occupation of Germany. Most notably, it was the temporary home of General Dwight D. Eisenhower for a seven-year, post-war period.

Interesting factoid? During Eisenhower’s post-war time there, he designed the on-site, 18-hole golf course. Yes, it’s still in use today.

Today, Schlosshotel Kronberg , which was built between 1889 and 1893, is operated by the royal House of Hesse as a luxury hotel, set amid parkland.

Operated by either Savor or Joy from Amsterdam to Budapest, the “Three Rivers: Danube, Main and Rhine” itinerary features these ports of call:

  • Amsterdam and Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
  • Koln (Cologne), Bonn, Koblenz, Boppard, Frankfurt, Wertheim, Marktheidenfeld, Wurzburg , Bayreuth, Nuremberg and Regensburg, all in Germany.

New Tauck Food-and-Drink Experiences

But there’s much more! Those special evening dinners aren’t the only unique food and drink-related experiences.

Depending on the specific itinerary, Tauck’s guests might also enjoy lunch at the summit of the Zugspitze . That’s Germany’s highest peak at nearly 10,000 feet.

Other lunch opportunities could include historic Weltenberg Abbey near Regensburg, and at a private Camargue region ranch in the south of France.

Tasting tours are also on tap in a number of cities and towns, including Frankfurt, Germany, and Strasbourg and Chalon-Sur-Saône, France. Tauck’s guests will also have an opportunity to quench their thirsts with these fun options:

  • Wine tastings in Burgundy and the Lavaux region of Switzerland.
  • A craft beer tour in Dusseldorf.
  • A brewery tour in Antwerp.
  • A tasting of local brandies and apple ciders in Normandy.

Special Access, Memorable Moments

In addition, special access and memorable moments crafted for Tauck guests extend beyond the food-and-wine experiences.

For example, guests might enjoy early “pre-opening” admission to the home, gardens and studio  of Impressionist painter Claude Monet in Giverny, France. Elsewhere, Tauck’s guests might head out on a guided excursion into the rock-cut tunnels beneath Nuremberg, Germany .

Peak Walk by Tissot is a daring activity for Tauck guests on a new itinerary in Europe. Photo courtesy of Tauck.

Ready for some thrills? Totally optional, but those seeking a daring eco-adventure might hang on tight and stroll across the Peak Walk by Tissot ( see photo courtesy of Tauck above ).

It’s a high-altitude suspension bridge connecting two Swiss peaks. Get ready for stunningly gorgeous Alps views of the famous Matterhorn, Mont-Blanc and Jungfrau. Adventurous guests who complete the stroll will have some serious “bragging rights” with friends and family back home!

Inclusive Vacation, Excellent Value

All of Tauck’s  special dining-and-tasting experiences are included in the price of the company’s river cruises. The cruise fare also covers all shore excursions, gratuities, onboard beverages (including all beer, wine and spirits), airport transfers, luggage handling and more.

Tauck’s full portfolio of 2024 river cruises is available on the company’s website.   To assist, a personal travel planner will gladly answer any questions and provide more information, based on your specific needs, budget and desires. Why not call today?

At the latter, Tauck’s guests will enjoy exclusive, early-entry admission to Impressionist painter Claude Monet’s home and gardens.

Another highlight (in timing) is that 2024 is the 80th anniversary of World War II’s D-Day Landings. So, it’s a poignant time to travel, particularly for some families whose relative landed on a Normandy beach in 1944.

Tauck’s guests will enjoy a private evening with a tour, dinner and music at the 1530-era Chateau du Taillis . Set on a parkland estate in Duclair, France, this Italian Renaissance mansion features baroque interiors. It’s a brilliant architectural showcase.

New Tauck: “La Belle Vie: The Rhone, Geneva and The Riviera”

Operating from Cannes to Geneva (or reverse), this 14-day itinerary includes a nine-night river cruise on the 98-passenger Emerald along the Rhone River. That’s nicely bookended by two, two-night hotel stays with guided Tauck sightseeing in Cannes, France, and Geneva, Switzerland.

Along the way, guests will experience Aix-en-Provence, Arles, La Camargue, Avignon, Uzes, St-Remy, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Tain l’Hermitage, Macon, Cluny, Chalon-sur-Saone, Beaune, Tournus, Cormatin and Lyon, all in France.

One highlight? Tauck’s guests will set out for an exclusive evening at Duche d’Uzes featuring a private tour, dinner and cocktails. The family castle of the Duke of Uzes, the home was once the site of a Roman governor’s residence and the haven of an exiled 9th-century duchess.

This “ La Belle Vie: The Rhone, Geneva and The Riviera ” itinerary is priced from $7,990 per person, double occupancy, plus airfare.

The itinerary sees Scenic whisk passengers to historic vineyards and cellars in Regua, Vinhateiro and the Côa Valley to sip on local wines and Port. An unmissable outing for couples is a private classical concert at the beguiling Sao Francisco Church in Porto, offered as one of the cruise line’s “Scenic Enrich” experiences.

River cruises are not known as a low-cost vacation option. Some lines, however, offer excellent value—especially when you compare the price to the overall cost of a land-based vacation in Europe. One cruise line that consistently offers great value is Emerald Cruises, a river cruise operator that gets travelers more bang for their buck—without compromising on quality or service. As standard, Emerald’s eight Europe-based “Star-Ships” offer a generous number of inclusions built into the cost of the cruise, with typically lower entry level fares.

Airport transfers to and from the ship, drinks (non-alcoholic, beer and wine) with lunch and dinner, gratuities, Wi-Fi and a plethora of shore excursions are included. There are often excellent deals to be had, too, such as free flight credit when booking early, buy-one-get-one-free offers and reduced-single supplement for solo travelers. Emerald’s ships are unquestionably elegant, including the 180-guest Emerald Luna, which sails Europe’s Rhine, Main, Danube and Moselle rivers. Guests on board can enjoy a heated pool that transforms into a cinema, spacious suites and a dedicated wellness area.

Why are many Russians freezing in their homes this winter?

Russia boasts a massive energy infrastructure, but a recent wave of heating system breakdowns in Moscow and beyond has left many residents scrambling to keep harsh winter temperatures outside.

A ship amid ice on the Moskva River floats by the Kremlin walls in Moscow

Thousands of Russians have been affected by heating systems failing across the country, including Moscow and its outskirts, the Moscow Oblast, as they face one of the harshest winters in decades .

The wave of breakdowns started in December and shows no sign of stopping. This week, at least 16 people suffered burns in the city of Nizhny Novgorod when a large-bore heating pipe exploded, spouting boiling water into the street. The pipe failure also left more than 3,000 people without heat, according to a local news channel on Telegram. The messaging service is one of the few remaining platforms Russians use to obtain uncensored information.

Just a day before the Nizhny Novgorod incident, a heating node failed in the city of Oryol, cutting off heat to homes, kindergartens, and a school, where boiling water burst out of steam heaters during lessons.

Residents in Moscow Oblast left without heat for days

The most severe breakdown occurred in Klimovsk, a district of the city of Podolsk in Moscow Oblast, just 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the capital. On January 4, the temperature dropped to -34 Celsius (-29.2 Fahrenheit) —  the coldest spell for the area in at least 40 years. On the same day, a Klimovsk heating plant failed. Some 20,000 people were left without heat in the district of 50,000 people. Thousands of them remained cut off from the heating grid for several days. Other cities and towns in the region also experienced multi-day heating failures during the extremely cold weather, with residents of the city of Elektrostal lighting bonfires in front of their apartment buildings as a sign of protest.

"The children were sleeping in warm clothing, me and my husband were also sleeping wearing pants, sweaters, shirts, under two duvets," a local woman told Russian news outlet The Insider, adding that the temperature in her apartment did not go above 10 degrees Celsius until she started using electric space heaters.

Ammunition factory provides town with heat

Officials were slow to respond. It took Moscow Oblast Governor Andrey Vorobyov three days to put out an official statement on the Klimovsk breakdown, blaming the owners of the "privately-owned boiler room" for allowing the breakdown to happen. Vorobyov said authorities have launched an investigation.

"We understand that everyone's patience has a limit," he said during a meeting with the citizens.

The governor also accused the plant's owners of being unreachable during the current crisis, pointing out that two of them lived abroad. The issue apparently drew the attention of Russian President Vladimir Putin — he ordered Vorobyov to nationalize the heating facility.

The delayed response could be due to the heating facility's sensitive location — it is operating within an active ammunition factory. Such arrangements between military industry and civilian infrastructure were relatively common in the Soviet era.

Links reported between Klimovsk plant and Kremlin

The ammunition plant was privatized in 2001, and the current ownership structure has not been made public. However, unconfirmed reports in the Russian media indicate that the plant's managers had first-rate connections at the very top of the Kremlin . The director of the plant, Igor Kushnikov, is a former colonel of the Russian FSB intelligence agency, according to media reports. In May 2023, he took over the plant management from Igor Rudyka — reportedly one of Putin's former bodyguards.

Last week, Russian federal investigators said they detained Kushnikov and the manager of the boiler room, Alexander Chikov.

Crumbling Soviet-era infrastructure

One of the shareholders of the Klimovsk ammunition plant, Marina Saharova, who is based in Germany, said the reason for the failure was not due to the heating facility itself but to the dilapidated conditions of the heating grid — she insisted that the boiler room needed to be shut down because of failures outside the factory.

Experts warned that the heating network in Russia is poorly maintained and outdated — especially in the areas that have massively increased their population density since the Soviet times. Even now, some parts of the country still use decades-old steel pipes, well past their projected 25-year lifetime, according to Russia's The Bell outlet . Official figures cited by The Bell indicate that some 3% of the heating, water and sanitation network is labeled as being in a state of "emergency" every year. Still, only 1%-2% are being modernized, leading to thousands of breakdowns.

Security poses an additional challenge in facilities such as the one in Klimovsk. Due to restrictions on access to the ammunition factory, civilian officials were unable to prepare the boiler room for winter or monitor issues in real-time, according to the outlet.

Russia, an energy superpower?

While some heating-related incidents happen every winter in Russia, this season has seen successive heating failures in multiple cities, from Novosibirsk in Siberia to Moscow and St. Petersburg to the western exclave of Kaliningrad.

The issue also carries an emotional weight in the country that traditionally sees itself as an energy superpower. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine , state propagandists issued dire warnings over EU sanctions on gas imports, claiming Europe would "freeze" without access to Russian gas for its heat.

Nearly two years into the war, however, heating in Europe appears stable while Russian officials scramble to respond to the heating crisis. This contrast is pointed out with glee by Putin critics and Russian-speaking users from war-torn Ukraine.

"They decided to freeze out Europe, but that didn't work. Then they decided to freeze their own to intimidate others," a YouTube user commented under a video reporting on the breakdowns.

Moscow moving to modernize heating grid

Russian authorities also appear aware of the problem. Recently, the Kremlin has started taking a more direct role in managing the heating grid, and federal authorities signaled they would be freeing up more funds.

"We are still using the communal infrastructure that was made during the Soviet era," said Svetlana Razvorotneva, a Russian lawmaker and member of the committee in charge of urban engineering. "We did not invest in modernization. Instead, we invested in maintaining all that outdated infrastructure."

She added that some 40% of the communal heating grid urgently needed to be replaced. The Russian state, according to the lawmaker, intends to invest 150 billion rubles (€1.55 billion, $1.68 billion) in the next two years to modernize the system.

Featured River, Small Ship and Land Journeys

Inspired by the destination.

For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

Guest Favorites in River Cruising

Along the Danube... the Rhine... the Rhône... or the Seine... our European river cruises are all about the unique cultural access you'll enjoy wherever we visit... the strong connections you'll make with the people you'll meet... and the traditions and genuine little moments they'll share with you  along the way...

Budapest to amsterdam by riverboat, the romantic rhine: basel to amsterdam, rendezvous on the seine, blue danube: family riverboat adventure, traveling with tauck, uncommon access.
