What is a Sunway Safaris Tour like?

Sunway safaris vehicles.

Many years of experience has been put into the making of the safari trucks. They are sturdy, well-equipped, comfortable and safe. The safari vehicles have large windows offering you unobstructed views of the surrounding terrain and great photographic opportunities. The passenger and driver’s compartment are integral which makes contact with the driver easier. 4×4 vehicles are used in Botswana for use in the National Parks with trailers for the equipment.

 Sunway Safaris Crew

There are two tour guides who are qualified and registered field guides (Field Guides Association of SA). They have a wealth of information and knowledge which means your tours will be enriched with their expertise and passion for Africa. They have been hand-picked and trained under the hands of the owners who share the same passion and enthusiasm for Africa.

Sunway Safaris Accommodation and Campsites

The camping facilities are good with hot showers, electricity, access to laundry facilities, interesting bars and restaurants. Some of the camps, however, have limited facilities, but they still have flushing toilets! All camping equipment is supplied, but you need to provide your own sleeping bag, pillow and towels. Two-man canvas dome tents are provided for you to rest in and are fitted with mosquito nets for your protection. They also provide tables and chairs and all cooking equipment and utensils, as well as cooler boxes or freezers for fresh food.

If you prefer added comfort and a dash of style with your safari adventure, then Sunway Safaris are more than capable of providing suitable accommodation for you. With guest houses, lodges, chalets or permanent tents, you are spoiled for choice. Some rooms have en-suite bathrooms while others are communal and you will more than likely share, but single supplements are available if you wish to stay on your own.

Sunway Safaris Food on Tour

On camping tours your morning will usually start off with coffee and rusks depending on how much time we have before setting off to see the sunrise or travel. If we have more time bread/toast, spreads, cereals or fruit will be served, or a hot breakfast such as bacon and eggs will be cooked.

Lunches include sandwiches with a variety of fillings and salads.  You can enjoy tasty meals from local organic ingredients that are purchased from the communities. Meals such as curries, stews, pastas, braais and even roasts will be enjoyed around the campfire.

The lodge tours provide meals at the establishment where restaurant-quality meals can be enjoyed.

Itinerary Summary

Limited Participation:  An essential part of your safari is some participation. From carrying your own bag to packing the truck in the morning – it’s all part of your adventure. There are some long days with early starts so we all need to get involved to make the trip run efficiently. Where the tour leaders provide meals we ask that clients help (on rotation) with the washing up.

Cape Town to Namibia is a variety filled journey providing the best opportunities to explore the vast unique beauty of Namibia. Highlights include the spectacular Western Cape, the Fish River Canyon, the Namib Desert and Etosha NP.

Day 1 CAPE TOWN   [hotel - - -] Cape Town is one of the most picturesque cities in the world, with the majestic Table Mountain providing its central focus. Departing, after a tour briefing, from Cape Town at 08:00am we visit Hout Bay harbour en route to Cape Point Nature Reserve and then the African Penguin colony at Boulders Beach. We sample some of Cape Town’s culinary wonders at a local restaurant in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (own expense).

Day 2 CEDERBERG   [chalet BLD] [B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner] The Cederberg is a massive rock wilderness with giant sandstone boulders that have been sculpted by wind and rain into bizarre and artistic shapes. We head north to the Cederberg and explore the rugged landscape on foot before relaxing in chalets for the evening.

Day 3 GARIEP RIVER   [lodge BLD] We make our way into the more arid regions and upon entering Namibia, we stay at a lodge on the Gariep River. Namibia’s southern border river flows quietly and peacefully and the river valley is hardly affected by tourism. The riverbed is sandy, the water clean and clear. Time free for swimming and relaxing or you can adventure down the river in canoes (own expense).

Day 4 FISH RIVER CANYON   [lodge BLD] The Fish River Canyon, situated along the lower reaches of the Fish River, is one of the most impressive natural beauties in the southern part of Namibia. With its depth of up to 550 metres, the Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world. After a visit to the canyon, we make our way to our overnight accommodation.

Day 5 - 6 NAMIB DESERT   [lodge BLD] The parched Namib Desert has endless orange dunes blown into sharp ridges by the sand-shifting wind and at Sossusvlei they form a gateway into the Namib Desert. We will walk to Sossusvlei, explore Sesriem Canyon and from the comfort of our lodge outside the national park watch dramatic sunsets over the world’s highest sand dunes.(If you prefer not to do the 4km walk to Sossusvlei there is an optional own expense 4WD transfer.)

Day 7 – 8 SWAKOPMUND   [hotel pension Bx2 Lx1-] Swakopmund is a popular seaside resort with a slightly nostalgic atmosphere, characterized by numerous colonial buildings. In terms of flora, both the Welwitschias Mirabilis and the Kokerboom grow on the stony plains of the Namib and many beautiful specimens surround the coastal town. Swakopmund is also the adventure activity capital of Namibia. Day free to explore the town or try dune boarding (own expense).

Day 9 DAMARALAND   [chalet BLD] Namibia is a land of great contrasts and Damaraland demonstrates this with stark plains and ancient valleys leading to rocky outcrops and the soaring peaks of the Brandberg Massive Mountains. On our way north we will visit the Cape Cross seal colony where thousands of Cape fur seals come ashore to rest and have their pups.

Day 10 - 11 ETOSHA NP   [guest lodge BLD] Once a vast lake fed by the Kunene River, the pan that is Etosha NP dried up thousands of years ago when the river waters chose a new course. Etosha is big game country. We take game drives around the huge pan to find the elephants, herds of antelope and lions around the waterholes. We stay at a lodge on the outskirts of the national park.

Day 12 WINDHOEK   [guest house BL-] This pretty town, beautifully situated in a valley, combines the architecture of a modern city with numerous buildings in the style of the German colonial era. The charm of the city of Windhoek lies in its harmonious blend of African and European cultures and the friendliness of its people. We visit the cosmopolitan capital and enjoy a restaurant meal (own expense).

Day 13 WINDHOEK - TOUR ENDS   [B--] Tour ends at 08:00 at the guesthouse. Transfers to airport available on request

sunway safaris malawi

This tour departs at 08h00 from the pre-tour accommodation guest house in Cape Town, South Africa. You will therefore need to fly into Cape Town International airport (CPT), the day before the tour starts.

  • Responsible Tourism

During our stay in Damaraland a local guide takes us to visit a San Bushman Rock Art site. A conservation partnership was signed in 2003 and the community benefit through employment and a percentage of the income of the lodge. Our walks to view the busman rock art are led by a local community guide. The local community directly benefits from your visit through the employment of the local guide and the entrance fees.

Conservation is not possible without the involvement of local communities and this arrangement ensures the preservation of these amazing rock art sites.

We accept children 12-18 with accompanying adults on scheduled tours (for private groups we can accept younger children).

If the clients are older than 65 years, then we require a medical certificate too (stating client is fit and healthy to embark on a multi-day tour covering long distances etc)

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT SOUTH AFRICA

Cape Town and the western Cape has a Mediterranean climate, meaning winter rain and long dry summer. The rest of the country has summer rains, frequently in short thunder storms that roll across the peninsula from the southern ocean fronts.

This tour, the Cape to Namibia, starts in the Cape but moves up the west coast into the Northern Cape which has a similar climate to Namibia.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT NAMIBIA

The Namib desert landscapes form a magnificent backdrop for a spectacular safari. Lying on the Tropic of Capricorn, and flanked by the cold Atlantic Ocean, Namibia has a desert climate for the most part and there can be large differences in day and night temperatures, low rainfall and overall low humidity.

June :– The nights are colder and can drop below 10°C/50°F. In desert areas, it can be freezing. Days are still pleasant around 20-24°C/68-75°F with clear blue skies.

July & August :– Winter morning game drives can be cold at an average minimum of 7°C/45°F, so dress in layers with a windproof jacket and beanie. The average daily temperature reaches 21-25°C/70-77°F but can fall to below freezing at night in the deserts and higher altitude areas.

September & October :– Spring is lovely. It isn't too hot, but the mornings are less chilly. The skies are clear and during October the green vegetation is fading as the heat builds up. October can be extremely hot.

Green season is from November to April : Photography is amazing at this time, with wonderful light,  dramatic lightning, and thunders storm cloud formations. Wildlife revels in the bounty of summer and life is good.

November :– By now it is hot, but with the humidity still low, it is pleasant. On average, the days are above 30°C/86°F, but it can be a lot higher in the desert.

December :– The first rains arrive and the temperature drops. The landscape changes after the first rains and everything comes to life. For the lucky you might experience the rare phenomenon of rain in the Namib Desert.

January & February :– Tends to be hot and humid with temperatures around 30-35°C/86-95°F and over 40°C/104°F in the desert. There may be downpours in the afternoon but not every day. Mornings are usually clear.

March & April :– Rainfall stops around April. It cools down and the nights start to get cold. Average day temperatures are around 25-30°C/77-86°F.

Marke and Denise Bluck - 13Sep18

On the 14 July 2018, my wife and I commenced tour SAa17 then CVa21 from Johannesburg. We were treated to a magnificent experience. The first tour had just four participants whilst the second had a full load of twelve. I am writing to express our admiration for our two guides , Pumi and Farai. Your company is blest to have two guides that not only made us enjoy our trip so much, but kept us safe, fully entertained, well fed, and on top of that their shared knowledge about the wildlife and local environment was extraordinary. No request was ever too much for them, and both guides went out of their way to enhance our safaris. During the course of the journey, Denise and I were treated to many in - depth discussions about the daily lives of the people, the difficulties they face, the cultural issues that exist in all the countries we visited. Their intelligence and empathy was a credit to them and we respected their thoughtful ideas that widened our views and made us curious to know more. The effort spent to make game drives successful was awesome. We spent many hours appreciating the habits of the animals and the vast knowledge the two guides imparted about animal behaviour expanded our knowledge and awareness of wildlife and the issues round their continued survival in the future. Sunway is fortunate to have such dedicated guides , they are a real asset to your company. Thank you for making our two expeditions unforgettable.

John Johnston - 11Feb15

A first class trip. Variety, excellent lodge, well planned driving days, good food and sensible timing.

Nancy Daniels - 06Nov14

After my Botswana trip I had high expecations but this trip was superb!! Great guides and they were very enthusiastic.

Muir Family - 09Jul14

Dear Shaun I hope this finds you well. We have just returned home to Glasgow this morning following our trip to Namibia and it was one of the best we have been on - and we are a well travelled family! We were very fortunate to have wonderful co-travellers on this trip, but I was really keen to let to you know that the trip was made for us by your guides - Chris Van Brakel & Farai Chigwada - but esp Chris. We always felt very safe and secure when he was driving - and he did a phenomenal amount of driving!! He was also really well informed - flora, fauna & ecology - but happy to listen to others too. However, for us as a family, the most important things were his warmth, support, charm and sense of humour and we would love to travel through Africa again with him! Many thanks to Sunway Safaris and all the best from Scotland! Vimty, Keith, Indie & Krish

Susanne Schlesinger - 24Oct12

Dear Richard I'm back home from the trip to South Africa and Namibia and settled at my desk again. It was a pity that I didn't had the chance to meeting you and hope we meet next time. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to travel from Capetown to Windhoek - it was a great experience! The tour was fantastic - the route, the Safaritruck, the tour guides, the accommodation, the food, the places we visited, the game drives - it was all more than perfect! I haven't been on a tour like that and couldn't imagine how much fun it is to travel with a small group. Capetown was a bit wet the first day, but we made the best of it and from the second day it was dry and sunny. I really enjoyed the canoeing trip on the Gariep River and also the Quadbiking at Desert Explorer in Swakopmund - this fun should not be missed, can just recommend it. I didn't expect that Namibia has so much varieties in landscapes and deserts. Its the perfect choice for people who travel to Africa for the first time. Cannot wait to see more of South Africa and Botswana. The truck was the perfect vehicle - we met a lot of other (bigger) groups and self drivers and I didn't want to sit in a big airconditioned coach or a car driving myself on these gravel roads. Maxwell was a fantastic driver and had such a tremendous knowledge about the countries, people, plants and animals - all of us learned so much new things. We also felt very safe all the time. In just one accommodation (Cedar Mountains) we had a shared bathroom, all the others were en suite in most lovely places - wished we could have stayed longer. Couldn't say which I liked most - all of them were unique in perfect locations. We expected huts or other basic accommodation and were surprised every day! We were also surprised about Jonathans cooking - the meals were just georgeous! He is a real chef - we couldn't have had better catering. I also really liked the picknick lunches and the romantic atmosphere at the Braai dinners and so did the others. I took loads of photos and have to sort them them out. I would be happy to share them with you as a little reward for this phantastic tour! If you need further information or wish to use this mail for customers comments please go ahead. Thanks so much again for let me taking part and say hello to Maxwell and Jonathan. Best regards, Susanne (also in behalf of my friend Tanja who travelled with me).

Itinerary Summary

Limited Participation:  An essential part of your safari is some participation. From carrying your own bag to cleaning your window and packing the truck in the morning – it’s all part of your adventure and when everyone puts in a little effort the trip will run smoothly. Where the tour leaders provide meals we ask that clients help (on rotation) with the washing up.

Botswana is considered Southern Africa’s premier game viewing destination. Get the best wilderness experience in Southern Africa by bush walk, game drive – and even by dug-out canoe. Cruise past hippos in the Okavango Delta and watch thirsty elephants at the river in Chobe National Park. End with a very grand finale: Victoria Falls.

Day 1 MAUN   [lodge ---] (B=breakfast, L=lunch D=dinner)

You will join up with your group at the lodge in Maun at +/- 17:00pm. (Arrival airport transfers can be booked). Since Maun’s founding in 1915 as the capital of the Batswana people, it has had a reputation as a hard-living “Wild West” town helping the local cattle ranching and safari operations. The name Maun is derived from the San word ‘maung’, which translates as ‘the place of short reeds’.

Day 2 - 3 OKAVANGO DELTA   [tented camp x2 BLD] We drive into the Okavango Delta to the launch station where we board our mekoro’s and pole to our tented camp in the heart of the largest inland delta in the world. This amazing environment has large numbers of red lechwe, buffalo, elephant and birds, particularly kingfishers! One of the best experiences in the Okavango Delta is to be poled along reed-lined channels in a mokoro (dug-out canoe). Sit back and relax as the water gurgles gently under the mokoro while your skilled poler points out the fauna and flora.

Day 4, 5, 6, 7 MOREMI  [3x tented bush camp BLD, 1x lodge BL-] We take an open 4WD into Moremi Game Reserve for fantastic game viewing! Chief's Island is the largest landmass within Moremi and was the Batswana tribe's richest hunting ground, before being declared a game reserve by the tribe. We spend 4 days on game drives watching the abundant wildlife including elephant, hippo, buffalo, lion & other game, both in Moremi Game Reserve and in private concession reserves surrounding the park. We return to Maun midday on day 7 for an evening restaurant meal (own expense).

Day 8 MAKGADIKGADI PANS   [tented lodge or chalets BL -] We have time for an optional game flight over the Okavango (own expense) before we head to Nata. The shimmering saltpans of Makgadikgadi appear as a glaring white, endless plain. When the rain comes a dramatic change takes place as thousands of wildebeest and zebra migrate to the sweet nutritious grasslands and clouds of flamingo feed in its algae rich waters. It is an area of low rainfall so this spectacle only lasts a short while.  (Please note due to high rainfall in the area over the last few years that there is water in the section of the pans we visit)

Day 9 - 10 CHOBE NATIONAL PARK   [lodge BL -] The Chobe River is a stunning feature of Botswana and will be the focus of our lodge stay. The Chobe River flows lazily along the northern boundary of the Chobe National Park attracting some of the largest herds of elephant in Africa. An early morning 4WD game drive in the Chobe National Park and an afternoon game viewing “sundowner” cruise to see the mighty elephant herds return to the Chobe River to quench their thirst.

Day 11 - 12 VICTORIA FALLS (ZIMBABWE)   [hotel Bx2 - -] We visit “Mosi oa Tunya” or “the smoke that thunders” - Victoria Falls. These magnificent falls are one of the seven natural wonders of the world. A rich and fertile rain forest, fed by the spray or “smoke”, surrounds the falls attracting colourful birdlife.

Opportunities to white water raft on the mighty Zambezi River, bungi jump, or take a “flight of angels” (own expense).

Day 13 VICTORIA FALLS (ZIMBABWE) – TOUR ENDS   [- B - -] Tour ends after breakfast at 08:00am.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT BOTSWANA

Botswana is centrally located in Southern Africa and has a sub-tropical climate. Largely Kalahari Desert, there are sizeable differences between the day and night temperatures and being a semi-desert environment, very limited rainfall. In the Delta temperatures are more moderate due to the abundance of water. The Okavango Delta provides a lifeline of water in the desert as the summer rains fall in Angola and take 6 months to arrive in the Okavango. Thus the Okavango Delta is actually expanding as the surrounding desert dries out through winter. This phenomenon creates an incredible wildlife spectacle all year round.

Dry season is from May to October : The game viewing is superb and wildlife is very easy to spot.

May :- Autumn temperatures are typically 10°C/50°F to 28°C/80°F.

June, July & August :- Winter morning game drives can be cold at around 6°C/42°F, but it warms to +-25°C/78°F, so dress in layers with a windproof jacket and beanie.

September & October :- Spring begins and temperatures warm up to +- 34°C/100°F. October is the hottest month in Botswana and the migration of the Southern Carmine Bee-eaters is a sight to behold and a must-see for this time of year.

Green season is from November to April : The intermittent rains bring much needed relief to the bushveld, many antelope have their young, and the world around you is brimming with new life. The rains also settle the dust, and the sunlight provides gorgeous photographic opportunities.

November & December :- As the clouds build up this time is typically cooler than October at between 20°C/69°F and 33°C/91°F but there can still be some very hot days. After the first rains the roads can become muddy in places!

January & February :- The Summer or "Green" months, have occasional spectacular thunderstorms in the afternoons. Temperatures are around 32°C/90°F at midday.

March and April :- The waters of the Okavango Delta start to rise and large herds of elephant and buffalo begin to make their way back to the Okavango as winter approaches. Lovely, clear weather and few clouds prevail, but the nights are cooler and the days very comfortable at around 30°C/87°F.

“First time and very recommandable. Just back from an unforgettable Sunway Safaris Tour to Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls with German speaking, perfect guide Wouter („as almost a part of the group“, always available and left no questions open) Driver William also a very experienced, carefully driver. Because both of them, we have discoverd the „Big Five“ at the first days already. Our "Red Elephant“ (Safari Chariot) was perfect suited for all "challenges". Thanks for the great time, will recommand to others !

Joy - 11 Jun 18

“We joined the BTa14 Botswana Wildparks tour in May 2018. We bypassed the rhino sanctuary and joined the tour in Maun. The tour was well organized and well run – everything was as per itinerary. We had excellent guides along the way – Lloyd, Maxwell and Moses were very knowledgeable, efficient and easy to get on with. The accommodation was mostly very good, the Hyena Pan Lodge being the highlight. Watching the elephants coming down to drink just across the lake was something else - particularly when one or two decided they preferred the water in the swimming pool just next to reception! From the point of view of wildlife viewing, bird watching and the overall experience, the tour exceeded our expectations by far. We felt privileged to see so many animals close up in their natural habitat, not just in the Moremi and Chobe Parks but just driving through the countryside or at the lodges. And the experience of camping in the depths of the Okavango Delta and the walking safaris there were unforgettable. Our guide, Lloyd, cooked up amazing meals for us on a gas stove – he even conjured up marshmallows to toast on the camp fire! It is clear that the government and people of Botswana respect and care for their environment. As one of the guides said, “The animals were here first, we have to learn to live with them.” For a short time, we were fortunate enough to be part of this wonderful country. Thank you, Joy UK.

Marlies - 27 Jul 17

HI Sunway Safaris, We have just returned from a 2 weeks Botswana Wildparks tour which exceeded our already high expectations. The itinary was well chosen in its activities, the accomodation was fine (Hyena Pan was brilliant) and travel times were absolutely alright (we chose the Maun start option and highly recommend this). My highlight were the days in the Okavango Delta, the mokoro poling, the bush camp and the game walks. Coming so close to 40 passing elephants while walking through the wilde sage was something I thought was only possible in dreams, but alas ... I will always cherish this experience - many many thanks for making this possible. Our 2 guides Adolf and Brian were brilliant, very knowledgeable, professional and experienced, making their constant hard work seem very easy and always fun. Their cooking was as awesome as their passion for exploring, showing and explaining beautiful southern Africa. All in all, I can only recommend Sunways and make sure you ask for a safari with Brian! I can still hear his laughter.” Best regards Marlies

Jessica - 12 Jun 17

HI Sunway Safaris, I just wanted to email to tell you what a fantastic time we had on our safari of Botswana to Vic Falls. It was amazing. The accommodation was perfect, the food was great and the scenery and wildlife were amazing. We saw alot of wildlife including elephants, giraffe, wild dogs, zebra, buffalo, 2 lions to name a few. A memorable moment was seeing a leopard with her 2 cubs which we followed for a good half hour or so in Moremi. That was amazing! Also seeing a pack of dogs killing an impala.” Best regards Jessica

Derit & Claudia Vossauemper, 27Sep15

It was a wonderful tour, much better than expected!

Nelly Hafner, 20Sep15

Good organised tour with a good combination of camping in the Delta and Lodges, especially Hyena Pan (Moremi)

Susan Musser, 30Aug15
