17 of the best hotels in the Bahamas

The finest places to stay in the sun-soaked bahamas, from castaway cays to family-friendly resorts and restaurants with rooms.

telegraph travel bahamas

B ahamas: the word conjures visions of icing-sugar beaches, lapped by warm surf. Friendly towns, painted in rainbow hues. Uninhabited islands, waiting to be discovered. And, happily for visitors, the holiday reality is just as enticing as the fantasy.

It’s impossible to see all of the Bahamas — not least because it’s made up of 700 islands and thousands more cays, some barely big enough to moor a boat. So choosing the right hotel is key. Don’t only consider facilities and atmosphere, but location — more than anything, that will dictate what you’ll see and do.

If easy sun is calling, capital Nassau, where flights from the UK land, is a great bet. Here family-friendly resorts are packed with restaurants, activities, shopping — ideal for travellers who want more than just a lounger. The slower-paced Outer Islands, meanwhile, take a bit more effort to reach. But in turn you’ll be rewarded with serenity, wildlife and some of the finest beaches you’ll ever see. These are the best hotels in the Bahamas.

The Ocean Club

1. The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort, Nassau

Best for Bond-worthy style It had a cameo in Casino Royale and is a magnet for celebs and moneyed execs. But despite its lofty status among Bahamian hotels — it’s occupied prime beachfront on Paradise Island since 1962 — The Ocean Club, now a Four Seasons, isn’t a retro relic. In contrast to Nassau’s denser resorts, its long lawns, low-rise stature and unobstructed ocean views are a real luxury. Highlights include a spa with Bahamian-inspired treatments, an adults-only pool and a sculpture garden echoing Versailles. Handily for families, even lead-in rooms sleep three people. No wonder so many guests return year after year.

The Royal at Atlantis

2. The Royal at Atlantis, Nassau

Best for families For children, Atlantis Paradise Island isn’t a hotel, it’s heaven. The classic-and-comfy bedrooms are almost irrelevant; you’re here for the insane range of amenities, including nearly a dozen swimming pools and restaurants galore (there are more than 25 dining options, with outposts of the Bahamas’s best-loved restaurants). Add in mind-expanding experiences such as Dolphin Cay — a marine mammal habitat where you can swim with dolphins — extensive kids’ clubs and an epic water park, and resorts in the Bahamas don’t get more exciting. Even grown-ups get their fun, via golf and a casino.

Spa Y Pool Y Price £

3. The Dunmore, Harbour Island

Best for Instagrammers Harbour Island, an idyllic one-percenters’ playground known for its pink sand beach and chichi town, is the stuff of Instagram dreams. Among the parade of luxury boutique hotels lining its gently shelving sands, The Dunmore — once a private members’ club — is the ultimate draw for influencers thanks to its manicured grounds, striped parasols and surfside restaurant serving up frosé and fish tacos. It’s one of the few beach hotels that doesn’t regularly host million-dollar weddings, so you can rest assured when booking into your coastal-cool room that the vibe will remain low-key.

Spa N Pool Y Price £££

Kamalame Cay

4. Kamalame Cay, Andros

Best for privacy When big-name celebs visit the Bahamas, they hire a private island — or, in the case of Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, they just come here. This little cay, dangling from wild, mangrove-studded Andros island (a 15-minute seaplane ride from Nassau) feels Robinson Crusoe levels of castaway but has enough luxury to satisfy the discerning. Book into one of the beachside villas, sleeping between two and ten, and you could go your entire stay without seeing another soul. For the more socially inclined, there’s an intimate restaurant, overwater spa and first-rate bonefishing expeditions.

Spa Y Pool Y Price ££

5. Embrace Resort, Staniel Cay

Best for swimming with the pigs The Exumas, a string of 365 paradisiacal islands south of Nassau, is famed for two things: swimming pigs and luminescent blue waters (visible even from space). Staniel Cay is the ideal jumping off place to explore it all and this affordable stay near the airport will greet you with a warm welcome. Villas range from one to three bedrooms, so it’s a solid pick for families on a budget. Staff will help you sort guided tours to see the pigs or the turtles at Farmer’s Cay.

Spa N Pool Y Price £

Rosewood Baha Mar

6. Rosewood Baha Mar, Nassau

Best for sophistication The Rosewood Baha Mar combines all the joys of the Bahamas — white sand beach, wafting palms, first-rate service — with the refinement of a city. Most luxury hotels in the Bahamas are geared up for honeymooners, but this is a social destination with an on-site casino, group-friendly rooms and chic shopping. Food is a priority, with a restaurant by Daniel Boulud, an excellent Mexican (Costa) and dozens more options in the greater Baha Mar complex. The curated art collection, with a centrepiece by Damien Hirst, is yet another draw; visit The Current Gallery to set up an in-depth tour.

7. The Other Side, Eleuthera

Best for glamping At this back-to-the-wild glamping resort you won’t have a TV and you’ll sleep under canvas, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be roughing it. The handful of “tents” are a far cry from Glastonbury, with hardwood floors, four posters, outdoor baths and (crucially for the Bahamas) air con. Meanwhile, the boho natural palette feels plucked straight from the pages of a glossy magazine. Guests come to explore untouched Eleuthera, do yoga by the pool and eat communal feasts made with produce from the onsite garden. The pool, jutting theatrically into the ocean blue, gazes across to Harbour Island, just a seven-minute boat ride away.

Spa N Pool Y Price ££

The Landing

8. The Landing, Harbour Island

Best for historic atmosphere Harbour Island’s pink sand beach is its best-known asset, but the isle’s town side — a mere seven-minute walk away — is just as enticing, and more affordable too. The Landing, set in the 19th-century home of the island’s first doctor, channels throwback style with its polished dark wooden floors and four posters, but in a way that feels cool and fresh. Jacaranda, a standalone cottage tucked into the compact grounds, comes with an outdoor shower tucked under fig trees. Don’t miss the intimate restaurant, the island’s best, with spicy crab capellini and an impressive wine list.

9. Valentines Resort, Harbour Island

Best for self-catering When yacht owners cruise down to Harbour Island from nearby Miami, they moor up at Valentines — a hotel, restaurant and marina on the island’s town side. But you don’t have to be a boater to check in. The spacious suites, set in photogenic colourful buildings, come with lounge areas and kitchenettes for self-catering (Pigly Wigly supermarket is just a seven-minute walk away). Even the smallest rooms are set over two floors, letting your party spread out in between visits to the suntrap pool or to the west-facing waterside restaurant, where sunset views are the star on clear evenings.

The Island House

10. The Island House, Nassau

Best for millennials As the gateway to the Bahamas, Nassau is naturally a hub for large-scale resort hotels. But The Island House marches to a different beat. With just 30 rooms and suites, this boutiquey stay is far more intimate, sporting a millennial-catnip aesthetic straight out of Miami or Rio. The airport is handily close, though you’re a drive from the best beaches; you’ll instead have to park yourself by the glassy pool. One of the restaurants comes courtesy of Anglo-Italian chef Giorgio Locatelli, and there’s a private cinema room and spa by Brit brand Bamford.

11. Coral Sands, Harbour Island

Best for beachside sunrises This long-standing Harbour Island resort has all the must-haves, including an ocean-facing infinity pool, tennis court and a library and games room for enjoying low-key nightcaps. Most guests, however, book in for the extreme proximity to the pink sand beach, where glowing sunrises are second to none. Coral Sands is a popular spot for weddings, so choose the wrong weekend and you may find yourself surrounded by guests (though they’re usually well behaved). If you are travelling as a larger family, the multi-bedroom villas are among the island’s most stylish.

The Cove

12. The Cove, Eleuthera

Best for honeymooners The Cove has all the pampering loved-up couples are looking for — think hilltop infinity pool, modern villas with floor-to-ceiling windows and sundowners at The Point Bar. But the tucked-away locale on underrated Eleuthera island means that between poolside cocktails you can enjoy wild, crowd-free adventures. Trips to deserted beaches, dips in luminous sinkholes and plunges with swimming pigs in nearby Spanish Wells are all on the cards. Just fancy staying put? The private beach, free paddleboards and attentive service are all reasons to do so.

13. Graycliff Hotel, Nassau

Best for a time warp Nothing much has changed in this historic Nassau manor house for decades. The bedrooms still have kitsch fabrics and sturdy wooden furniture — more fitting of an English country house than the Bahamas — and the downstairs restaurant is still considered one of Nassau’s best. Despite its location within walking distance from the city sights (the Queen’s Staircase, John Watling’s Distillery), the garden-cloaked grounds are truly serene. The hotel is home to one of the world’s largest wine cellars and celebs aplenty have visited to crack open a precious bottle in the exclusive dining room.

Margaritaville Beach Resort (Booking.com)

14. Margaritaville Beach Resort, Nassau

Best for combining city and beach Here’s a rarity in Nassau: a downtown hotel that also comes with a proper beachfront. You can spend mornings lazing about on powdery sands overlooking Paradise Island, then afternoons and evenings exploring the nearby market, shops and restaurants without having to navigate taxis or shuttle services. It’s a hefty old resort, so you get a built-in waterpark, kids’ club and entertainment complex complete with karaoke, bowling and virtual-reality sports too. And there are nearly a dozen dining options — with icy margaritas very much on the menu.

15. Staniel Cay Yacht Club, Staniel Cay

Best for yachters You don’t have to BYOY (bring your own yacht) to enjoy the onboard life at this Exumas resort, a popular fuel stop for boaters. One of the upsides to booking into this boutique resort is the chance to hire your own vessel, for puttering over to the nearby islands to sunbathe or snorkel. When you are back on dry land, modern, porch-fronted waterfront bungalows and suites give you a constant view of the remarkable blue waters circling Staniel Cay. The indoor-outdoor bar, festooned with nautical flags, mixes up rum cocktails from 10am onwards.

Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort & Villas (Booking.com)

16. Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort & Villas, Long Island

Best for sunset hour The sunsets are next-level here and so is the beach — bleached white, soft as flour and lapped by warm surf. Easy-going Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort is perched on the northern tip of Long Island, a sleepy ramble that’s a great pick for snorkelers, boaters and divers, plus anyone who wants to see what the world’s second-deepest blue hole looks like (you’ll find it on the eastern coast). Bungalows and villas that sleep from two to eight people spill right onto the sands, while refrigerators allow you to keep your sundowner of choice suitably chilled.

Spa N Pool N Price £

Rock House Hotel

17. Rock House Hotel, Harbour Island

Best for boutiquey atmosphere Built above Harbour Island’s port in the 1940s, the ten-bedroom Rock House Hotel started life as a private home. And the intimate vibe prevails, from the eclectic art pieces to the cute poolside breakfast terrace. The restaurant is one of Harbour Island’s finest and you should book ahead to snag a space — particularly a window-side one at sunset hour. After feasting on blackened grouper or grilled Bahamian lobster, you’ll retreat to rooms decked out in cream hues with pops of juicy tropical colour.

Best traveling methods.

telegraph travel bahamas

Let’s begin with flights. Without a doubt, it’s the quickest option, with many direct flights available from the US, particularly from Florida. Prices can vary, but as a rule, make sure you book in advance for the sweetest deals.

Cruise ships add a significant touch of adventure and romance to your trip. While they take more time (typically 1-2 days from Florida), they offer panoramic ocean views, entertainment, and the thrill of journeying across the sea.

There are also private yachts that can take you there. It’s an amazing luxury option for sure but at a higher cost.

When choosing your method of travel, consider your budget, time constraints, and what kind of journey you want.

Visa Requirements for US Citizens

US citizens are not required to obtain a visa for stays up to 90 days in the Bahamas.

But, just like any international travel, you do need to carry some essential travel documents:

  • First and foremost, you must have a valid passport that’s current till your intended period of stay.
  • Also, be ready to present proof of your departure date. This can be your return ticket or any document showing you’re not planning to extend your vacation indefinitely.
  • If you plan on renting a car, bring your driver’s license with you as well.

When it comes to rain, May and June hold the record for the highest rainfall, particularly in the northern and southern islands, but you can experience short showers year-long.

Humidity is pretty common in the summer, with the sun playing peek-a-boo in the hot mid-afternoon skies, making for an ideal time to explore indoor attractions or embark on shaded day adventures.

Health, Safety & Security: Tips for a Worry-Free Vacation

Is the bahamas safe for tourists.

Yes, the Bahamas is safe for tourists. Contrary to some misconceptions, the Royal Bahamas Police maintains a robust presence for the safety of both Bahamians and tourists alike.

That being said, just like every other buzzy tourist spot worldwide, it pays to be aware of your surroundings and valuables.

The most common issues encountered by tourists are pickpocketing and ATM scams. Most places accept USD, so don’t bother with the ATM, the conversions is 1:1.

Keep your belongings safe and use common sense when walking around, and you will have a great time.

Bahamas Travel Safety Tips

telegraph travel bahamas

To ensure your Bahamas experience is nothing short of perfect, it is necessary to pay attention to a few fundamental safety measures:

  • Primarily, be aware of your surroundings and valuables when you’re basking on the beaches or lounging near the pools.
  • Don’t leave your precious items unattended, and try to keep a low profile to avoid unwanted attention.
  • While water activities are a massive part of the Bahamian charm, ensure you’re not swimming alone, especially during early mornings or after dusk.
  • If you have medical issues that could affect your ability to engage in strenuous activities, kindly take them into consideration before diving into the ocean or exploring remote areas.
  • Ensure your rides are with licensed operators, be it taxis or watercraft like jet skis and water taxis.
  • If you’re planning an excursion, it’s best to coordinate directly with your hotel or travel provider to avoid untrustworthy individuals.
  • Adherence to local laws is essential, and remember, the use of marijuana retains strict penalties in The Bahamas.
  • And, if you ever find yourself in a sticky situation, don’t hesitate to seek help. Dial 911 or 919 for assistance, or reach out to the hotel staff, who are usually more than willing to aid their guests.
  • Just remember, your safety and security are paramount, and a little vigilance can go a long way!

Packing Tips for Bahamas Trip

What essentials to pack for your bahamas vacation.

telegraph travel bahamas

When packing for your Bahamas getaway, your motto should be “comfort meets utility”. The Bahamian climate calls for lightweight, breathable clothing, enough for a week’s stay.

Include at least three swimsuits in your package, as you’ll find them indispensable for beach outings or casual excursions.

Don’t forget a broad-spectrum sunscreen, a must-have to shield your skin from the Caribbean sun, along with sturdy sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat for extra protection.

Your suitcase should also feature comfortable walking shoes for those adventurous trails and city explorations, paired with plush beach towels for idyllic beach lounging.

Now that you’re set with clothing and fun items let’s not forget the documents.

Necessary travel papers such as your passport and copies of important documents like travel insurance and emergency contact information should be securely packed.

An overlooked essential, but always a lifesaver, throw in an insect repellent in your bag.

To help you pack, here is my Bahamas Packing List .

Clothing and Other Necessary Gear for Activities

telegraph travel bahamas

Hitting the Bahamas beaches is a primary filler on your vacation itinerary. As you pack for your dips into the azure Caribbean waves, remember to include the necessary outfit and gear for maximum fun and comfort.

For beach activities like swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing, a swimming suit is a must-have.

  • Pick cover-ups, shorts, or quick-dry skirts to slip on over your swimwear for transitions from the sand to nearby restaurants or beach bars.
  • For snorkeling, pack your kit—a mask, snorkel, and fins—but double-check if your resort offers them.
  • For your feet, invest in a pair of sturdy water shoes. They will protect you from gritty sand, shells, or unexpected undersea rocks while snorkeling.

When you’re ready to step away from the beach and take on exploration activities, go for lightweight and breathable clothing.

  • Think cotton t-shirts, breezy sundresses, or comfortable shorts—they are your best bet in the tropical Bahamian climate.
  • As for footwear, balance between flip-flops for beach saunters and comfortable walking shoes for hikes or long explorations.

Lastly, don’t forget to pack the holy trinity of a tropical vacation—a hat, sunglasses, and a plentiful supply of sunscreen.

These are indispensable when it comes to protecting your skin from the strong Caribbean sun. Remember, a sunburnt holiday isn’t a fun holiday.

Budgeting Your Bahamas Holiday

Estimating costs for typical expenses in the bahamas.

In the vivid island paradise of the Bahamas, the typical daily costs range according to your travel style.

  • For a backpacker lifestyle, you’ll need around 140 BSD per day,
  • while a mid-range budget may have you spending about 195 BSD daily.
  • On the luxury end, plan for an excess of 340 BSD per day.

Accommodation prices can vary from 100 – 240 BSD per night in budget hotels or Airbnb.

Dining out is a delight, with prices ranging from local street food to high-end restaurants.

Transportation and activity costs vary greatly depending on what you choose to do, from cheap public transport to guided tours and water sports rentals.

Consider the season and location for cost fluctuations. December to March brings the best weather, but also high season prices.

Don’t hesitate to take advantage of local delights and happy hour specials to make the most out of your trip!

Money-Saving Tips for Your Bahamas Vacation

Puerto Rico Packing List

Traveling to the Bahamas doesn’t have to break the bank! With a bit of planning and creativity, you can experience the tropical paradise affordably.

Let’s dive into some tried-and-true strategies that can help you keep your Bahamas budget in check.

Accommodation is one of the big-ticket items in any travel budget, so securing a deal here can translate to sizeable savings.

Consider booking your accommodation well in advance—this not only secures you a spot in popular places but often nabs you a better price.

Even better, try Couchsurfing to connect with locals and stay for free. You’ll save money and get to see the Bahamas from an insider’s point of view.

Opting for local transportation, such as jitneys (buses) or even walking, instead of hailing expensive taxis, can help save a good chunk of your budget.

Moreover, simple acts like carrying a reusable water bottle, especially if it’s a filtering LifeStraw, can keep you hydrated without blowing your spending on bottled water.

Instead of dining out every meal, explore local markets or grocery stores for fresh produce. You’ll save more by cooking your own food, but you also get to have a unique culinary experience.

Don’t overlook the free or low-cost attractions and activities either. Many hotels offer the use of snorkel gear and even organize excursions, so always ask what’s available.

Also, remember that the Bahamas tourism website often lists great deals—like discounted hotel rooms or book-a-third-night-free deals, so it is definitely worth checking out.

And lastly, never underestimate the importance of travel insurance. It protects you from unexpected costs such as medical help or trip cancellation.

It’s not just about saving money—it’s about protecting your investment in your holiday. We use SafetyWing .

Some other deals and discounts? Frequent flyer miles, travel reward programs, and promotional offers are all excellent ways of cutting down costs.

Make sure to explore all your options! After all, your vacation should be more about enjoyment and less about money worries.

By being smart about your money, you can have a wonderful trip to the Bahamas without leaving a dent in your wallet.

The Bahamas is not known as a budget travel destination, so it’s considered a mid-range to expensive place to visit.

Known for its picturesque beaches, clear waters, and abundance of resorts, the Bahamas attracts millions of tourists each year, especially from America.

The tourist-centric nature of the country and its popularity as a luxury vacation spot contributes to its reputation for being costly.

However, this doesn’t mean that the Bahamas is out of reach for visitors with a limited budget.

What can't you bring when visiting the Bahamas?

Here are some items you definitely can’t pack along in your suitcase due to the Bahamian government’s strict safety and security regulations: weapons, dangerous or unlawful items such as weed.

Bear in mind that weed is illegal in the Bahamas, and having any illicit substances could even land you in jail.

Also, the Bahamas takes agriculture and animal import seriously due to pest and disease control. Before stuffing that picnic basket, remember certain agricultural products are strictly forbidden.

Don’t bring any fruit, herbs, or anything that has seeds. This way, you’ll sidestep unpleasant customs surprises and keep your trip fun-filled!

How far is the Bahamas from Florida?

telegraph travel bahamas

The Bahamas is situated roughly 50 miles southeast of Florida’s coastline.

Traveling to this tropical paradise from Florida is pretty quick and convenient, with more than 40 non-stop flights from South Florida and a ferry ride from Fort Lauderdale that takes less than three hours.

So, whether you’re planning to take a flight or embark on a sea journey, reaching the Bahamas will be a breeze, laying down the foundation for a stress-free vacation!

What language is spoken in the Bahamas?

The official and primary language spoken in The Bahamas is English , giving English-speaking travelers an instantly comforting sense of familiarity.

Wherever you roam, from bustling Nassau to the tranquil Out Islands, you’ll find that English is widely understood and used.

What’s fascinating is that Bahamians may spice their language up with a tantalizing Creole dialect – accents, words, and phrases all influenced by their vibrant culture and heritage.

But worry not, it adds an intriguing yet delightful twist to your visit, and rest assured, the language barrier will be effortlessly non-existent in your Bahamian experience.

Four Boutique Hotels For Your Next Bahamas Getaway

Is this one of the Caribbean's most exciting hotel destinations?

telegraph travel bahamas

September’s Hurricane Dorian was the worst to ever hit this archipelago, but what many people might not know: while Grand Bahama and the Abacos face years of rebuilding, the storm left most of the archipelago's 700 islands untouched. Tourist dollars go a long way toward the northern islands’ recovery — and it's an exciting time to visit the Bahamas , thanks to a group of recently arrived and renovated indie hotels that channel the pride of their owners.

North Andros

After Dorian, the team behind family-run Kamalame Cay raised more than $30,000 for the affected communities, gathering food and supplies and offering employment opportunities to those who were displaced. And the storm didn’t stop owners David and Michael King-Hew from moving forward with regular improvements: they opened two new villas in 2019, with 10 more in the works for later this year.

New Providence

With a Zen temple aesthetic, an in-house wine label, and an art-house cinema, the 30-room Island House provides a more intimate atmosphere than Nassau’s larger beach resorts. Guests have exclusive access to a private beach club nearby, but if that feels too crowded, have the staff arrange an overnight to Highbourne Cay , their private island in the Exumas.

South Andros

In 2016, HGTV Canada stars Bryan and Sarah Baeumler purchased a 1960s-era resort and began transforming it into the 24-key Caerula Mar , which opened last month. Spread across ten beachfront acres, it’s the island’s first new hotel in nearly 20 years — and the owners have already seen it bringing new life to this once-sleepy area, with infrastructure updates and new local businesses like conch shacks and bone-fishing charters.

“Solar-powered safari camp” might not be your first thought when planning an island vacay — but the Other Side , on one of the country’s least developed “out islands,” is not your usual beach hotel. A stay here is barefoot luxury incarnate, with outdoor bathtubs, in-room massages, and access to the property’s 30-foot Hinckley yacht. The three tented suites and and three hilltop cottages (they call them “shacks”) will soon be joined by three new villas, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the sea.

A version of this story first appeared in the February 2020 issue of Travel + Leisure under the headline Boutique Bahamas.

The Most Stunning Hotels In The Bahamas

Fly to the Bahamas with British Airways and stay in the Most Stunning Hotels

One&Only Ocean Club, Paradise Island

OneOnly Ocean Club Paradise Island

On an island named Paradise, in a resort originally christened Shangri-La, it would be fair to assume you're onto a good thing. And the classic One&Only Ocean Club doesn't disappoint. Think Bahamian-beach chic on a private ocean-side estate with Versailles-like gardens. Guests can dine at top chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Dune, play the Tom Weiskopf-designed championship golf course, indulge in the Balinese-inspired One&Only Spa, or relax by the oceanfront pool. Add a world-class fitness centre, beach yoga, water sports, deep-sea fishing and luxury-yacht charters to private islands, and the only decision is what not to do each day.

Atlantis, Paradise Island

Atlantis has become almost as renowned as the city after which it is named. With five-star residential properties and a super-smart all-suite hotel, a different dining experience for every night of the month a PGA golf course, a shopping village, a marina, and the Mandara Spa and fitness centre, no two days are the same. And that's before you enter Aquaventure: a lush, 140-acre water park that takes tropical escapism to new levels with adrenalin-inducing slides, descents through glass tunnels surrounded by 250 marine species and spectacular coral reefs, as well as magical interactive experiences at Dolphin Cay.

The Cove Atlantis, Paradise Island

Fly to the Bahamas with British Airways and stay in the Most Stunning Hotels

Set on its own peninsula within Atlantis Paradise Island, The Cove has sleek stone décor and earthy tones that bring a grown-up elegance to Atlantis's fun-loving atmosphere. Winding through the resort, pillared, open-air walkways lead to oversized one- and two-bedroom Suites and Club Suites, each with its own dedicated concierge - and on to many other luxurious experiences at this exclusive retreat. Sunbathe on the white sands of the two private beaches, enjoy delicious South American cuisine at 77˚ West, or soak up the atmosphere at Cain at the Cove, the buzzing adults-only beach club with a 9,000-square-foot pool with elevated infinity pools at each end, 20 private cabanas and a DJ creating a hip vibe day and night.

British Colonial Hilton, Nassau

As the only beachfront hotel in downtown Nassau, the British Colonial Hilton is in a prime spot. There are fabulous garden, city or harbour views from the spacious rooms and suites, all decorated in typical Hilton style. Indeed, views reign supreme throughout: from the private beach and beach club; from the cosy cabanas at the outdoor pool; and from the restaurants, whether you are enjoying international favourites at Aqua or dining in the more casual, wood-panelled Bullion bar (it also has a brilliant rum selection). And when you've finished gazing at the ocean, you can go and immerse yourself in it by trying out the many water sports - or slope off for some duty-free shopping in the upscale boutiques on the British Colonial Hilton's doorstep.

Pelican Bay, Grand Bahama Island

Grand Bahama Island

The story goes that Pelican Bay came about thanks to a pelican who lost its bearings and discovered a spot of land so beautiful it built a grand perch overlooking the harbour from which to watch the glorious sunsets. Standing beside the Pelican Bay, a verdant oasis set against colourful Bahamian architecture, towering palms and the stunning Bell Channel Bay, you can hardly blame that bird. Inside, waterside rooms combine Caribbean cheerfulness with classic European style, and there's tropical-fusion dining at Sabor. Outside, white-sand beaches, lush boulevards, beautiful seascapes and the Port Lucaya Marketplace are all a walk away, with the Garden of the Groves and Lucayan National Park also nearby.

Coral Sands, Harbour Island

At the edge of 300-year-old Dunmore Town - an eclectic mix of New England cute and Caribbean colour - is the serene Coral Sands. Set on a flower-covered Atlantic bluff, this boutique resort is a sanctuary of candy-pink sands, jasmine-scented breezes, sun-drenched days and balmy nights. Smart yet low key, it has just 38 rooms and cottages, as well as the private Villa Carissa, spread along what has been voted 'the number one beach in the Caribbean'. Days are spent by the pool, in the palm-thatched tiki beach huts, trying out the non-motorised water sports, or exploring Dunmore Town's quiet streets of pretty cottages and picket fences, boutiques and art galleries on foot or by golf cart.

Sandals Emerald Bay Golf, Tennis and Spa Resort, Great Exuma

Sandals Emerald Bay Golf Great Exuma

Bringing romantic luxury to the easy-going rhythm of the Out Islands, Sandals Exuma is designed to ensure you'll feel like you're the only person there. Hidden within 500 acres of tropical landscape fringed by a mile-long beach, the Bahamian-style villas and suites fit in with the surrounding nature. Choose from expansive butlered Suites, oh-so-romantic butlered Villas overlooking the turquoise sea, or the fabulous Royal Estate Beachfront Villa Suite, reminiscent of a Bahamian manor. Seven dining options include Tuscan-inspired Il Cielo; fine-dining; barefoot ocean-side restaurants and the Café de Paris - after which a nightcap by the glowing fire-pit is a must at the end of the day.

How to get there: Go from last-minute packing to lounging on pink sands in less than 10 hours, thanks to British Airways' direct flights four times a week to Nassau, New Providence - from which 16 of the other islands are an easy boat or plane hop away. Once in Nassau, The Bahamas are your oyster, with British Airways Holidays offering a wide range of hotel and resort options across the islands to accommodate every type of dream holiday. CPD issues missing person alert days after woman disappeared at Bahamas yoga retreat

S everal days after a Chicago woman was reported missing from the yoga retreat she was attending in the Bahamas, Chicago police have issued a missing person alert.

Police on Monday issued a bulletin for Taylor Casey, a 41-year-old from the city who mysteriously disappeared while attending a June yoga retreat in the Bahamas not long after the U.S. issued a " Level 2" Travel Advisory for the island due to crime. She was last seen June 19 and is currently listed by police as a missing person.

"If you have had any recent direct contact or correspondence with the missing above, or if you have any information regarding the current whereabouts of the missing please contact Area 5 Special Victims Unit immediately at (312) 746-6554," the bulleting stated.

No other information for the alert, including why it was issued several days after her disappearance was first reported, was given.

Casey was attending The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat on Paradise Island in Nassau when she went missing, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said in a flier posted to Facebook . Organizers of the program say Casey's disappearance was discovered on June 20 "when she did not attend morning classes."

"A participant from our yoga certification program, Taylor Casey is missing," The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat posted on Facebook last week. "She was last seen at the retreat late on the evening of June 19th."

The statement went on to request that anyone with information on Casey's whereabouts contact local police.

"The Ashram is working with authorities in their investigation." the statement said. "Your assistance is greatly appreciated."

The retreat is described as a "vibrant yoga ashram offering vacations, courses, and teacher trainings as well as cleanses, detox programs, healing arts trainings, family programs, kirtan and more," according to the group's Facebook page.

Visitors are able to rent a variety of accommodations when staying at the Ashram, including rooms, huts and tents, the group's website showed .

The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat did not immediately return NBC Chicago's request for comment.

Last week, Colette Seymore, Casey's mother, stated in a press release that family and friends were " deeply concerned for Taylor's safety and well being ."

"We love Taylor and want her home," the release said, which was posted to a public Facebook group titled " Find Taylor Casey ."

Seymore's statement went on to say that Casey was eager to share her experience at the yoga retreat with others upon her return, leading her to believe her daughter may be in danger.

"Taylor would never disappear like this," the statement said.

According to the release, Seymore was expected to travel this week to Paradise Island and Nassau to coordinate with local authorities.

Latest updates from police

A recent report from the Nassau Guardian stated that police have used drones, divers and a canine unit in their search for Casey. During a local press conference Wednesday, Nassau Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings reported that Casey's cellphone had been found in the ocean and recovered, but that her belongings were still at the Ashram.

“Let me say that our priority is to find Taylor and to find Taylor in good health," Skippings said in the Nassau Guardian's report.

According to the report, police searched both the island and the area around it. Officials were not able to confirm the type of lodging Casey was staying in during her time at the retreat.

The outlet also noted that the Bahamas' Director General of Tourism had met with family members and local police as part of the investigation.

“It is an ongoing police investigation," Director General of Tourism Latia Duncombe told local reporters. "Our hearts are with the family of the person [who] is missing and I’m sure the authorities are doing everything within their power to bring some resolve.”

In January, the U.S. issued a " Level 2" Travel Advisory for the Bahamas , warning that travelers should "exercise increased caution in The Bahamas due to crime."

"The majority of crime occurs on New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) islands," the advisory said. "Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas. Be vigilant when staying at short-term vacation rental properties where private security companies do not have a presence. "

The Nassau Guardian said Duncombe addressed the travel advisory this week.

“The destination is safe and we have to make sure visitors do feel safe when they visit the Bahamas," Duncombe said. "Whenever there is an odd occurrence, it does increase concern and we want to make sure we address it in a very measured way.”

NBC Chicago has reached out to Casey's family, the yoga retreat and the Royal Bahamas Police Force to learn more. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

The Best Hotels in the Bahamas

Last Updated on June 10, 2024 by Katrina

telegraph travel bahamas

A short flight from the U.S. mainland, the islands of the Bahamas offer an irresistible Caribbean getaway. You’ll find plenty of full-service and all-inclusive resorts right on the sand equipped with pools, activities, music, and no shortage of colorful cocktails. While some of the most famous resorts in the Bahamas are on Nassau or Paradise Island, you’ll also find excellent options on less-developed islands, such as Eleuthera in the Bahamas’ Out Islands. Here are the best hotels in the Bahamas.

The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort, Bahamas (One Ocean Drive; 242-363-2501) Paradise Island

“Not only will you feel like a celebrity here, but you might just brush by a few at this beachfront resort with impeccable gardens modeled on those at Versailles,” writes Condé Nast Traveler . This beachfront Four Seasons features a golf course, three pools, a Balinese-style spa, a kids club, and a Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant. Online reviewers note that this is a resort for relaxing, not partying, but a party is not far away, either. “The grounds are beautiful and the staff is very friendly,” says a Tripadvisor user. “Atlantis is a short walk down the beach where you can go to the casino.”   >> Book this hotel for less

Rosewood Baha Mar (One Baha Mar Blvd, Bahamas; 242-788-8500) Nassau

“It was very relaxing, laid back, and the service was amazing,” says a Google reviewer of the 226-room resort on Nassau’s Cable Beach. “They have a wonderful setup with great pools and a small but service-oriented beach.” While the resort has two pools, a spa, and private beach, Condé Nast Traveler loves its anti-mega-resort vibe. This “is the kind of place you would think would have a swim-up bar and all-inclusive wristbands, but Rosewood Baha Mar is … sophisticated and calm. The resort celebrates its location through local art and a strong vibe of recaptured travel glamour.”   >> Book this hotel for less

The Cove Eleuthera (Queen’s Hwy, Gregory Town; 844-210-8539) Eleuthera

Soak up natural scenery at that this 55-room resort on Eleuthera that Condé Nast Traveler calls “a secret-feeling sanctuary” while US News & World Report likes its “plethora of outdoor pursuits… whether you’re lounging on the beach or snorkeling in the cerulean waters.” Choose from activities such as biking, boat excursions, kayaks, and SUP boards, while rooms offer creature comforts such as minifridges and Nespresso machines. “You feel like you have the entire place to yourself,” says a Google reviewer. “The food is excellent, and the views are exquisite. Go to the end of the point around mid-morning to see sea turtles and flying fish.”   >> Book this hotel for less

French Leave Resort, Autograph Collection (Queen’s Highway, Governor’s Harbour; 242-332-3778) Eleuthera

Stay in your own Colonial-style cottage facing the water at this Marriott Autograph property—formerly a Club Med—that The Telegraph calls “an exceptional boutique resort with a breezy, island-style allure, but no stuffiness or pretense.” While a few online reviewers note that the restaurant service seems to run on “island time,” one Tripadvisor reviewer says the leisurely pace is worth it. “If you’re looking for privacy, this is your spot. Everyone is provided their own golf cart to take the short ride to Atlantic side where you will find basically your own gorgeous beach.”    >> Book this hotel for less

The Dunmore Hotel (Colebrook St., Dunmore Town; 242-333-2200) Harbour Island

This 16-room hotel on Harbour Island’s Pink Sands Beach started out as a members-only beach club in the 1960s, writes Afar , “and the spirit and decor evoke that era: Wicker and rattan furniture, patterned prints, and spaces that are as much outdoors as indoors.” Choose from cottages or residences that can sleep two or four, or larger houses with up to five bedrooms. One Google reviewer notes that the beach is “beautiful but limited” while another users recommends the larger Harbor Cottage with its “western facing views for sunsets, with a private heated pool shared with Low Tide cottage. Gym was super nice…had a Peloton bike.” The resort offers pickleball courts, too.    >> Book this hotel for less

How to get around in the Bahamas: Everything you need to know

Nov 16, 2022 • 4 min read

The food, the drinks, the amenities – if you're staying in a resort in the Bahamas , it's likely you won't want to leave once you land. But to take full advantage of all the 700-plus islands have to offer, you'll have to head out.

Admittedly, getting around the Bahamas is a little tricky with inter-island flights or ferries, but not a major hassle if you plan ahead. Conveniences like Uber and Lyft do not exist, but there are plenty of local taxis or buses to get you where you need to go. Here are the best ways to get around the Bahamas.

Aerial view of a flight passing over San Salvador island and turquoise waters

Planes are the best way to island-hop

Travel between the islands of the Bahamas is best done by plane. Inter-island flights to popular locations such as Andros, Harbour Island, Eleuthera, the Exumas and the Abacos cost around US$125 to $150, with flight times ranging from 25 to 60 minutes.

Domestic airlines such as Bahsmamsair, Flamingo Air and Southern Air fly to the Out Islands , which locals refer to as the Family Islands, daily. Most planes are smaller with one row, so pack light, but bags are always checked, so they don't have to be carry-on sized.

There are 20 international airports in the country, but Lynden Pindling International Airport, located on the western end of New Providence island, is the biggest and busiest. It also serves as a hub for inter-island flights.

You'll have to arrange a shuttle service or grab a taxi once at the airport. Most taxi services will have a fixed rate based on distance. There are no public transportation options available.

To see more of the country, go by car

Hitting the road in the Bahamas is a great way to cover more ground and explore the Out Islands . Driving in the Bahamas, especially in Nassau , is filled with one-way streets, narrow roads and heavy traffic. Heads up: folks drive on the left side of the road here.

In order to drive in the Bahamas, a valid US passport is required, but if your stay is longer than three months, an international driver's license is needed. Major rental-car companies, such as Hertz, Alamo, National, Avis, Budget, Dollar and Thrifty, have offices on most islands.

Taxis are another car option for getting around, and there's no shortage of licensed drivers. Most taxis have a fixed rate, although some are metered, so double-check before hopping in one.

Golf carts are an easy and affordable mode of transportation on the Out Islands, like the Biminis, Harbour Island and the Abacos . You can book one easily through a hotel or local shop.

Visit the islands by boat

Boats, ferries and water taxis are all fun ways to adventure around the Bahamas. Some of the islands, such as Harbor Island, are only accessible by boat. Boats and ferries have scheduled rides throughout the day.

Bahamas Ferries is best for traveling to the Out Islands and back. To reach Harbor Island, you can either take a boat from Nassau or Eleuthera, depending on the arrival airport. From Nassau, ferries leave daily in the morning to Harbor Island and return in the evening. The port is about 40 minutes from the Lynden Pindling International Airport, and a taxi service will have to be arranged.

Bahamas Ferries starts at roughly $92.95 for a one-way ferry ride to destinations such as Grand Bahama Island, the Abacos and Andros. From Eleuthera , a much cheaper option is a water taxi to Harbor Island, which you can take for only $5 and pay upon arrival. The water-taxi port is a short drive from the North Eleuthera airport, and they leave every five minutes.

Note there are “no sailings” days, so it’s best to book a ticket in advance and review the schedule to avoid any last-minute complications. There are multiple time slots are available from morning to evening hours, with the last ferry departing around 7pm on sailing days.

Other water services, mainly through Bahamas Ferries, offer a wide variety of inter-island services from Grand Bahama Island , the Abacos, Andros, the Exumas and Long Island.

Tourist flock the streets along Nassau's harbor to eat and shop amidst car and bus traffic. Straw vending is Bahama's oldest industries.

Take the bus when you have time to spare

An affordable and widely used option for getting around the Bahamas is taking the Jitney Bus. The Jitney Bus costs anywhere between $1.25 and $3.50 for a one-way ticket and will take travelers from one side of the island to the other. The buses don't run in the Out Islands, and it's best to use exact change.

If you're on a tight schedule, this might not be a great option – the buses don't run on a strict schedule. They operate from roughly 6am to 7pm, so plan to use another mode of transportation, such as a taxi, to get around in the evening. There are designated bus stops, but you can also flag one down. Simply yell "stop" when you're ready to hop off.

Accessible transportation in the Bahamas

Most of the primary and popular resorts in the Bahamas are wheelchair accessible and have shuttle-bus options for transportation. However, poor sidewalk conditions in Nassau may be an issue for travelers who use walkers or canes. Main cruise ports have accessible options as well.

Offseason Bahamas Trip Allowing Louisville to 'Speed Up' Team Growth

Matthew mcgavic | jul 2, 2024.

Louisville men's head basketball coach Pat Kelsey updates the media about the program during a press conference on June 27, 2024 in Louisville, Kentucky.

  • Louisville Cardinals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Not many people have the opportunity to take a getaway trip to The Bahamas. Later this calendar year, the Louisville men's basketball program will be doing so twice in the span of just a few months.

Just a few weeks into the upcoming 2024-25 season, which will serve as the Cardinals' first year under new head coach Pat Kelsey, Louisville will make their way down to there for the 2024 iteration of the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Cardinals will play three games against to-be-determined opponents from Nov. 27 to Nov. 29, with the rest of the eight-team field consisting of Arizona, Davidson, Gonzaga, Indiana, Oklahoma, Providence and West Virginia.

But before their regular season trip to The Bahamas' capital city of Nassau, Louisville will be making a stop there during the offseason.

Late last month , Louisville announced that they will also be taking a "foreign exhibition tour" to The Bahamas for the Baha Mar Hoops Summer League. There, the Cardinals will play a pair of to-be-determined international opponents, arriving at the Baha Mar resort on July 28 before returning stateside on Aug. 2.

While Kelsey was busy constructing his roster from scratch, Louisville's administration put together the offseason trip in a very short amount of time. He believes that the foreign tour will serve as a crucial developmental aspect for his squad.

"It's great," Kelsey said. "It really allows us to speed up the growth curve of this team. Both implementing what we do, how we do it, our system, our terminology, teaching guys how we practice."

For starters, the trip will allot Louisville some extra practice opportunities. Under current NCAA rules, during the summer, teams are limited to just four hours per week on basketball-specific activities. This includes both on-court practice of any kind, as well as film breakdown. Additionally, teams get eight hours per week for strength and conditioning.

When a trip takes a foreign trip, the NCAA allows them to have 10 full practice days on top of the four hours per week of on-court instruction. These practice days are the kind that a team would normally have throughout the course of the regular season, where there aren't any kind of restrictions. Louisville plans on taking these 10 practice days prior to the start of the summer foreign trip

"When we get to the end of those 10 practices, we get a great head start," Kelsey said.

It goes without saying that gaining extra practice time - and the experience of playing international opponents - is a major boost for any team in terms of their offseason preparation for the upcoming season, as well as their overall team chemistry. But for a team like Louisville, they'll need all the chemistry-building they can get.

Following the firing of former head coach Kenny Payne back in March, every single scholarship play on the roster entered the portal. That left Kelsey and his staff to building, quite literally, an entire team from the ground up.

Fortunately, Kelsey and Co. did a great job on this front, landing 12 D1 transfers and a high school prospect. Louisville's transfer portal class, per On3, ranks No. 1 in all of college basketball.

But as we know, talent isn't everything and chemistry also plays a major factor. For example, last offseason, Arkansas assembled an extremely talented team through both the portal and high school. The Razorbacks wound up going just 16-17, and their head coach in Eric Musselman later bolted for USC.

So far, offseason chemistry building is off to a good start. Kelsey has been impressed by Louisville's first month of summer workouts, and the players themselves have adjusted well to their new environments over that time. Even so, the opportunity for the team to get in more on-court work during the summer will help them get ahead once the preseason rolls around.

"We get back together when it really, really starts ramping up, and it counts for real. When practice starts at the end of September and in the beginning of October, we can look back to these 10 practices and go, 'Man, we're way farther ahead than we should have been.' So that was the main point of it," Kelsey said.

While developing on-court chemistry is certainly a massive boost, the chance to build off-the-court camaraderie is just as big of a bonus. Kelsey cites the "cultural aspect" of getting to go to another country, while the players themselves echoed the importance of developing team bonding in a non-basketball setting.

"It'll be fun to take that trip with the guys, and get closer with each other," guard/forward J'Vonne Hadley said. "Chemistry is a big thing, no matter what team you're on. Just going to the Bahamas and playing those games, hanging out with each other, just experiencing that trip as a whole, will put us steps ahead. We need that. We're a whole new team, a whole new staff, and it'll be super good for us."

Norwegian, Carnival and more cruise lines change itineraries due to Hurricane Beryl

As Hurricane Beryl moves across the Caribbean, a number of cruise lines have changed itineraries in the area in an effort to avoid the storm.

▶ Norwegian Cruise Line altered nearly the entire itinerary for a week-long sailing on its Norwegian Breakaway ship that departed from Miami, Florida, on Sunday. The line canceled stops in Honduras, Harvest Caye in Belize, and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, according to a letter sent to guests that the line shared with USA TODAY. The ship will instead visit Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, Tortola, and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas instead.

“While we share your disappointment, these modifications were made with great consideration as your safety, and that of our crew, is always our number one priority,” the letter said.

The line similarly changed a week-long sailing aboard Norwegian Jade that left Port Canaveral on Saturday, replacing planned calls in Falmouth, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel with San Juan, Puerto Rico, Tortola and Puerto Plata.

Was your cruise itinerary changed? Here's what to do next

▶ Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Liberty ship moved a planned Friday stop in Cozumel up to Tuesday. The vessel departed on a week-long cruise from New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sunday, according to CruiseMapper .

Carnival Horizon, which is sailing a six-day itinerary that left Miami on Sunday, will skip a visit to Grand Cayman on Wednesday.

“The safety of our guests and crew is paramount, and we are continuing to monitor forecasts and factor in guidance from the National Hurricane Center, U.S. Coast Guard, and the local port authorities to provide timely updates to our guests as more information becomes available,” spokesperson Matt Lupoli said in an emailed statement.

▶ Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy ship – which set sail on a week-long cruise from Port Canaveral on Saturday – will not visit Falmouth as planned on Wednesday. The stop will be replaced with a sea day .

The center of the storm is expected to “move quickly across the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea today,” passing near Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands the following day, the National Hurricane Center said.

My experience traveling to the Bahamas: New rules and what you need to know

Harbour Island, Pink Sand Beach, Bahamas

I've traveled to more than 68 countries for my Travel Therapy Trips TV show. Traveling is more than just my job; it's my passion and I usually love it. But to be honest, no matter how experienced a traveler you are, all the COVID-19 health concerns and travel restrictions over the last two years have created a new level of stress we've never had to deal with before.

When I started planning my trip to Harbour Island in the Bahamas I was happy to learn that you're not required to quarantine once you arrive, but there is still a list of things you need to do before you're allowed to visit including getting a special visa. This was a first for me. Here's a quick rundown of what is needed.

Travel rules for the Bahamas

  • Create an online profile at this Bahamas government website
  • Take a COVID-19 test no later than 72 hours before traveling
  • Upload negative test to your Bahamas online profile
  • Apply for a Travel Health Visa that includes Bahamas Insurance
  • Get approved for travel and get a Travel Health visa barcode
  • Show your Travel Health visa in order to enter The Bahamas
  • After arriving in The Bahamas take a COVID-19 rapid antigen test on the 5th day
  • Pass another COVID-19 rapid antigen test the day before you leave so you can board your flight home.

I'll admit when I first saw the Bahamas website with all the things non-residents need to do I was a little overwhelmed. Thankfully, I quickly learned that the process of traveling to there is much easier than it looks and shouldn't prevent you from making a trip to this very special slice of paradise. #Worthit!

telegraph travel bahamas

The Bahamas government has also just announced it is easing some COVID-19 restrictions to make it even easier to travel and still be safe when you're on the islands. And once you receive your Travel Health visa you can travel to any of the islands in The Bahamas.

If this is your first time traveling to the Bahamas since COVID-19, I'm going to quickly walk you through the process that I just went through to hopefully help take away any unneeded stress. This will also give you the resources you need to answer any questions you might have to get the most updated information.

telegraph travel bahamas

Traveling to the Bahamas step #1 - Create a profile

After purchasing your transportation to the Bahamas you need to go to the Bahamas Travel Health website . Plan to spend about fifteen minutes here setting up your required online profile. Be prepared to supply the following information:

  • Name, number, address and date of birth
  • Check any boxes of health problems you have
  • Supply your passport information
  • Share an emergency contact
  • Provide the number of children traveling with you if applicable
  • Vaccine information

If you're vaccinated, you'll need to provide the type of vaccine, dates and address of where you received the vaccine, the batch number of the vaccine that's written on your health card or file, and also upload a copy of your vaccine information to the website.

telegraph travel bahamas

Traveling to the Bahamas step #2 - Get a COVID-19 test

If you are vaccinated, the Bahamas requires that you have a negative COVID-19 test no sooner than 72-hours before traveling and you need to upload your negative result to your Bahamas online profile so you can apply for the health visa.

Please note the COVID-19 testing restrictions that state: "Any person presenting test results older than three days (72 hours) will not be allowed entry into The Bahamas." You can either have a PCR COVID-19 test or a rapid antigen COVID-19 test at an approved provider. At this time, do-it-yourself home tests are not accepted.

Because PCR test results can take a while and I'm vaccinated, I got a rapid antigen COVID-19 test 72 hours before my trip at a local pharmacy. I got the results in just a few hours. This gave me time to upload my negative test results into the Bahamas website and get approved for my Travel Health visa as soon as possible.

Related: Here's why your whole family will love Atlantis

The website says it can take several days to get approved and I was worried that would be cutting it very close, but I was relieved to be approved in just a few hours and this was the same for all the other travelers I talked to. But beware, you need be sure to fill out your online information very carefully. Inputting any wrong information can get you denied and you don't want any delays for your trip.

This is what it says on the Travel Health website: "Vaccinated travelers are required to upload a negative RT PCR or antigen COVID-19 test taken in the country they are departing from. Failing to upload a negative COVID-19 RT PCR or antigen test will result in an automatic denial of entry. Currently, The Bahamas does not accept antibody (IgG/IgM) or Sa test types."

What kind of COVID-19 tests are accepted in the Bahamas?

The Bahamas Government website says, "At this time, the Bahamas Government will only be accepting vaccinations by AstraZeneca (Vaxzevria/Covishield), Janseen (Johnson & Johnson), Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty), Moderna (Spikevax), Sinopharm, Covaxin or Sinovac."

Traveling to the Bahamas for unvaccinated travelers:

If you're an unvaccinated adult and want to travel to The Bahamas, the COVID-19 test you need to get is the COVID-19-RT-PRC test. Here is what the website says about traveling with children:

  • All unvaccinated visitors, ages 12 and older, are required to upload their negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test results. Tests must be taken up to three days (72 hours) prior to the date of arrival.
  • Children between the ages of 2 and 11 are required to obtain a negative COVID-19 test (either a rapid antigen test or RT-PCR Test), taken no more than three days (72 hours) prior to the date of arrival.
  • The Bahamas has suspended the mandatory COVID-19 RT-PCR testing requirement for children ages 2-11, which was expected to take effect on Jan.7. Rapid antigen tests will continue to be accepted for this age group.
  • Children under the age of 2 are exempt from any testing requirements

Non-vaccinated persons traveling inter-island within The Bahamas from New Providence (Nassau), Paradise Island, Grand Bahama Island (Freeport), Eleuthera or Inagua are also required to obtain a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test, taken no more than three days (72 hours) prior to the date of travel, and presented to the operator of the airline or vessel on which they are traveling.

Traveling to the Bahamas Step #3 - Upload your info

Once you have your negative COVID-19 test results upload the information immediately to the online account for travel to the Bahamas. You'll need to include the address where you got the test, along with the following:

  • Your arrival information
  • Your departure information
  • Where you're staying including the address and phone number

Traveling to the Bahamas step #4 - Get insurance

The Bahamas requires all foreign visitors have special health insurance. The great news is this insurance is already included in the cost of the Travel Health Visa that cost me $40. Be sure to print out a copy of the PDF that's online proving you have health insurance and carry it with you on your trip.

All visitors are required to have Bahamas health insurance. As part of the travel application, visitors are required to opt in to the COVID-19 health insurance that covers them for the duration of their stay up to one month. The cost of insurance is included in the Bahamas Travel Health visa application fee. Here are the guidelines:

  • Bahamas Travel Health visa applications can take up to 24 hours to process.
  • The cost of the visa is dependent on the length of stay and vaccination status.
  • All visitors 18 years and older are required to complete an individual visa application.
  • Persons 17 and younger should be added to the profile within the account of their parent or guardian and complete an individual visa application.

Traveling to the Bahamas step #5 - Get approved

From the time I uploaded my negative COVID-19 test it took about six hours for me to get approved for my visa. There will be a full-page PDF that has a barcode on it that you'll want to print out and have with you on your trip. You'll need this to check in at the airport and to get your COVID-19 test once in The Bahamas. To help keep things all in one place I used the VeriFLY app on my iPhone and that worked great. I still aways print hard copies just to be safe in case something happens to my phone. You'll also want to print out the PDF with your proof of insurance and carry that with you as well.

telegraph travel bahamas

Traveling to the Bahamas step #6 - Get another COVID-19 test

If you're going to be in the Bahamas five days or more you'll need another COVID-19 rapid antigen test taken at an approved facility on your fifth day there. The government recently changed this rule. Previously you needed the test on day three making it challenging for some who just wanted to do a quick weekend vacation. Here is the latest from the Bahamas website:

  • Effective Feb. 20, all travelers, both vaccinated and unvaccinated, are required to take a COVID-19 rapid antigen test on the 5th day after their arrival. The day of arrival is considered Day 1 of a person's stay.
  • An approved list of testing sites is available at bahamas.com/travelupdates . Some testing sites require an appointment. Travelers should contact the nearest testing site to schedule 48 hours prior to required test day.
  • All travelers will have to bring their approved Travel Health visa with QR code to enter The Bahamas along with a government-issued form of identification (passport, driver's license, etc.) to the approved testing sites.

Don't panic if you're researching your trip and don't see a Bahamas approved testing site near where you're staying as that happened with me. Just call the hotel and ask what they recommend. They often have people they know nearby who are authorized to give the tests. Where I was staying they even had someone come to the property to test me. Very fast and easy. They then upload the tests to the government website so all you have to do is wait for your results. I had mine in a few hours.

Bottom line

To wrap up, because of all these COVID-19 health rules and regulations, I felt very safe when traveling in the Bahamas. At the property where I stayed, Romora Bay Resort and Marina, all of the staff, resort guests, people coming in on their yachts, boats and water taxis, and everyone on Harbour Island, wore masks when required. Everyone was very respectful to the rules, something I very much appreciated that made my trip much more enjoyable and stress free.
