Best Time to Go on a Safari in The Republic of the Congo

In the Congo Basin, the climate is generally equatorial, meaning interchanging between two main seasons, the dry season and the wet season. Both seasons offer advantages and unique experiences; the dry season is typically recommended for first-time visitors due to better wildlife viewing opportunities and easier travel conditions, while the wet season appeals to those interested in photography, bird watching, and experiencing the rainforest's vibrant life.

(May to September)

  • Optimal for wildlife safaris as animals are more accessible to spot near water sources. The weather is more pleasant for tourists, with less rainfall and humidity, making it the best time for trekking lowland gorillas.
  • With the drier landscapes and ease of navigation comes the opportunity to experience the wildlife, the endangered gorillas, elephants and various birds.

(October to April)

  • Take advantage of the landscapes as they turn luscious and green, offering beautiful scenery. It's the best time for bird watching, with migratory birds arriving during this time, including swallows, swifts, and bee-eaters, and for seeing newborn animals, including the baby forest elephants.
  • This season is ideal for enthusiasts interested in the rich plant life, bird species, and the dramatic waterfalls and rivers at their peak.

Republic of the Congo Safaris

Immerse yourself in the heart of the Congo Basin rainforest – a biological hotspot of global importance and the world’s second biggest rainforest, surpassed only by the Amazon. Within these dense rainforests, lowland gorillas peacefully reside while the forest bais open up sightings of forest elephants, forest adapted hyenas, bongos, and diverse birdlife. The Congo isn’t a well trodden safari destination with a well established tourist infrastructure. Long and uncomfortable journeys by planes, 4x4s and pirogues make this an experience not easily forgotten, but one that rewards the adventurous traveller.

The Congo Safari Experience

  • Immerse yourself in one of the oldest parks in Africa, Odzala-Kokoua, located in the heart of the world’s second biggest rainforests, the Congo Basin.
  • Track western lowland gorillas through the dense rainforest.
  • Meet pioneering gorilla researcher Dr Magda Berejemo and her team to learn about primate conservation.
  • Explore the Lekoli River by kayak or boat, looking out for mammals, primates and birds.
  • Walk through the forest and wade through streams and explore the rich mosaic of bais, rivers, marshes and swamps on foot.
  • Swim in the natural pools of Ngaga Stream.

Why Natural World Safaris for your Congo safari?

We originally started back in 2005 as World Primate Safaris. Our CEO and Founder Will Bolsover spent many years in the jungles of Central and East Africa, working in the gorilla parks. As well as our long history working in the region, we were invited to be one of only four official founding tourism partners worldwide for African Parks. In 2010, African Parks entered into a 25-year-long agreement with the Republic of the Congo’s Ministry of Forest Economy, Sustainable Development and Environment to protect Odzala-Kokoua National Park which is the primary destination for tourism in the region.

There are four main camps that we use in the Congo. Another of our favourites is Naga Camp in the Ndzehi Concession, sitting amongst towering trees and open Marantaceae forest, is the home of the Western Lowland Gorilla research team. What to Expect from a Trip to the Congo

ROC Congo Odzala Discovery Camps Generic Wildlife Warthog

This is my third trip with NWS, their knowledge is unrivalled. I knew the Republic of Congo had western lowland gorillas, but hadn't considered booking a trip there until David recommended it. It was clear from the outset that David had travelled there numerous times and was truly passionate about this country. This passion and enthusiasm resulted in me booking this trip, which was a once in a lifetime experience. I have been on numerous safaris but none of them compare to this! You can tell that the animals are not used to seeing tourists all the time, which made this trip all the more unique. The staff at the lodges could not do more to make sure we enjoyed ourselves, and our guide Kerri, made sure we saw as much as possible! I can't wait to go back!

Our Destination Specialist, David was great. He was knowledgeable, helpful, affable, and prompt to respond. He is a pleasure to work with. The Odzala camps were terrific, and the food was the best we’ve had on any of our travels – in terms of quality, preparation, presentation, and the variety of the menu. We were blown away! The guiding was also superb. The entire experience was extremely well conceived and greatly exceeded our expectations. And, of course, your app is absolutely fantastic. Great client service, great guidance throughout the planning and travel stages, and great trip construction.

The trip was wonderful and ran smoothly. Everyone did a great job. NWS are very different and offer some exotic locales.

Congo Safari Packages: Our Top Picks

The Republic of the Congo (the Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville) is a small country along the west coast of Africa. This basin is drained by rivers like the Sangha, Mambili, and the mighty Congo, which give a route through the jungle to far-flung national parks like Odzala-Kokoua . The wilderness is especially prized and traditional ways of life are preserved in certain areas. The heavy forested landscape is characterized by swamps, bais, and rivers; this is ideal habitat for western lowland gorillas; and it is the remarkable wildlife interactions accessible here that are attracting more and more tourists to the Congo . The highlight for visitors is gorilla trekking, which should not be missed.

Despite its tumultuous history, the French colony of Congo-Brazzaville is presently seen as tranquil, stable, and fast developing. Brazzaville, the capital, is sometimes referred to as the “Little Paris of Africa” due to the abundance of art, fabric booths, flower markets, cafés, and the aroma of freshly baked baguettes wafting from the city’s many boulangeries.

Still, tourism has only been around for a short while. Its cities may not be up to five-star standards, but its wilderness areas and wildlife encounters are, thanks to its relative isolation for so long. The Congo is an amazing place to visit if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty.

Rivers such as the Sangha , Mambili, and the mighty Congo drain this basin and provide a means of exploration through dense forests and access to remote national parks such as Odzala-Kokoua .

In these regions—perhaps more than any other—wilderness is the highlight, and traditional cultures persist. What to expect on a luxury safari to Republic of the Congo

A former French colony, Congo-Brazzaville has had a troubled past but is now considered calm, stable, and rapidly developing. Dubbed the “Little Paris of Africa,” its French history is felt most in the capital city of Brazzaville with its vibrant streets lined with art, fabric stalls, flower markets, cafés and the smell of fresh-baked baguettes wafting from one of its many boulangeries.

That said, tourism is still relatively new. Travelers should not expect five-star amenities in the cities, but because it has been off-the-radar for so long, its wilderness areas and wildlife encounters are truly unforgettable adventures. If you can stand to get your hands a little dirty, the Congo won’t disappoint.

Republic of the Congo Travel Tips From Our Experts

  • French is the official language, so we recommend a private guide in the capital.
  • Brazzaville ‘s art scene is on the rise, making gallery visits a good way to explore the capital.
  • Odzala-Kokoua National Park is home to pioneering research of the western lowland gorilla.
  • Luxury & Private Safaris in Republic of the Congo: Travelers who need only five-star accommodation without the hiccups of a developing tourist industry will not like the Congo.
  • If you are not an active, hands-on traveler, or if you want the classic Out of Africa safari experience, the Congo is not a good fit.
  • Prepare to walk in Congo. Much of your experience will be active. Gorilla trekking , exploring the bais, night walks, and kayaking are mainstay activities. Game drives are possible, but the highlights are best accessed on foot.

Just keep in mind that rainfall still occurs and can be quite variable during the dry season.

As a safari destination, the Republic of the Congo offers exclusive luxury in remote areas. Naturally, this exclusivity and luxury comes at a premium.

While the country itself is relatively cheap, to maximize experiences in hard-to-reach locations, such as gorilla trekking in Odzala , we recommend budgeting a minimum of $15,000 per person for a seven-night journey.

Republic of Congo

Republic of congo travel.

Not to be outshone by its ‘Big Brother’ ( Democratic Republic of the Congo – DRC ), the Republic of the Congo has claimed a spot in the top echelons of safari experiences in Africa. Three-quarters of the country is covered in the lush, dense Congo rainforest and bordered by the DRC,  Gabon , Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Angolan enclave of Cabinda.

For those seeking to discover an alluring wildlife wonderland, the rich biodiversity of the “Second Lung of the World” is enclosed in a handful of national parks with Odzala, Conkouati, and the Lefini Faunal Reserve featuring most prominently. They offer encounters with unique species like the famed western lowland gorilla and hundreds of more species of different orders. The mighty Congo river glistens brightly across the country’s landscape. Originating in the highlands of the East African rift and crossing the equator twice, it snakes its way for more than 4,500 kilometres—making it the second-longest river in Africa and the ninth in the world—before ending in the Atlantic ocean.

Brazzaville stands proudly as the safe capital city of the Republic of the Congo. Here, visitors can explore the buzzing markets and purchase a variety of local souvenirs, as well as discover the country’s colonial history. International visitors to the Republic of the Congo are serviced by flights into  Brazzaville . Upon arrival, it is best to make use of pre-arranged transport and services by recognised operators as vehicle hire, with a driver, is expensive.

Congo

Despite  gorilla trekking  being the most popular attraction when planning a safari to the Republic of the Congo, the country has a variety of other activities on offer. Other natural wonders to marvel at include the Diosso Gorge that offers expansive views of the countryside, as well as the Loufoulakari Falls, situated at the confluence of the Congo Loufoulakari River. Some of the biggest tiger fish in the world can be reeled in at the Tiger Fish Congo Camp.

The capital of Brazzaville sometimes referred to as the ‘Little Paris of Africa’ provides an abundance of cultural experiences, from cheerful markets to delving deeper into the varied history. Travellers can also venture to Linzolo where the first Catholic Church was constructed by French priests in 1882. For a laid-back experience, an excursion to the seaside city of Pointe Noire is a must. Travellers can sip on a sundowner while taking in the sights and sounds of the Atlantic ocean.

It is in the Congo Basin, spanning the Republic of the Congo and five other countries in west equatorial Africa, that visitors will set eyes on the wild and wonderful creatures that are dependant on this natural phenomena for their existence. Unspoilt and genuinely wild safaris can be undertaken in Odzala National Park, Louana National Park, Conkouati Douli National Park, Nouabale-Ndoki National Park, and Lefini Faunal Reserve.

The most priceless of wildlife experiences are beyond question getting a glimpse into the unique world of the endangered western lowland gorilla. The posturing of the older yet still impressive silverbacks will be one for the memory bank.

During a trekking expedition, visitors are also bound to sight forest elephants and buffalos among the abundance of trees. More than 700 bird species and 892 different butterflies, of which 20 are endemic, sweep and dart across the skies of the Republic of the Congo. Closer to the country’s spectacular coastline, marine animals like whales, dolphins, and sea turtles are regularly spotted.

International tourism in the Republic of the Congo is seeing an upwards curve and there has subsequently been a marked improvement in accommodation facilities. Most of the more luxurious facilities, however, can still only be found in the larger towns. When venturing outside the concrete jungle, various eco-friendly camps have been developed.

Since the average daytime temperature is in the mid-20s Celsius, the Republic of the Congo is a good safari destination all year round. The short dry season is from January to February, while May to September is regarded as the long dry season. This is the best time to visit Odzala National Park. Also, travellers should be aware that there are two wet seasons with the short rains occurring in March and April and the long rains between October and December.

Virunga National Park: Virunga National Park was gazetted in 1925 to protect the unique flora and fauna including mountain gorillas. It is the oldest national park in Africa with amazing wildlife and physical features like volcanoes, vegetation cover, crater lakes, streams and rivers which flow within the dense forests. The park is also home to volcanoes, the rare okapi, forest buffaloes, African elephants, spotted hyenas, jackals and birds. Virunga national park was part of the greater Virunga conservation area which included Uganda and Rwanda. Located in Central Africa, the country is named after the Congo River that flows throughout the country. The Congo has a total area of 2,344,858 square kilometers making it the second-largest country in the continent after Algeria. The country is bordered by up to 9 countries say Uganda , Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Sudan, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo and Angola.

The Congo has a lot of attractions to offer to travelers, especially to travelers that love to discover and explore: the Congo has this untapped and wildness plus unmatched biodiversity that is very rear to find in most African countries, it is indeed a gem worth a visit. Notwithstanding the on and off volatile situation in the country, the country has a number of tourists that flock it.

Travelers who go on Congo Safaris oftentimes go to do mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park but there is a lot that the country has to offer including hiking the active volcano of Nyiragongo that has a lava lake at its peak, chimpanzee trekking, lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi Beiga National Park , game drives, among so many activities.

National Parks in the Congo

The national parks of the Congo offer a wildness that is unmatched in Africa. From the jungle forests of the Virunga National Park that are home to some of the rare and endangered primates like the mountain gorillas to the savanna plains of parks like Maiko National Park that offer splendid game viewing options, you will have a true African safari while on a Congo Safari.

Virunga National Park

This is the top destination in Cong o for one to enjoy their Congo Safaris tours . Virunga National Park that is formerly known as Albert National Park lies in the North-East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo bordering the Rwenzori Mountains of Uganda in the north and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park in the East. The park includes part of Lake Edward , the Semliki River valley, parts of the Rwindi, Ishasha and Rutshuru valleys. Established in 1925, the Virunga National Park is Africa’s very first and therefore oldest national park and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The park is managed by the Congolese Institute of Nature and Conservation.

The Virunga National Park has a unique and active chain of volcanoes that are rich in the diversity of inhabitants. Some of the prominent volcanoes include the Nyiragongo mountain that has a lava lake at its peak, mount Sabinyo which is the oldest of all, Nyamuragira which is actually an active volcano and mount Mikeno.

Attractions and Activities in Virunga National Park

Mountain Gorillas

Mountain gorillas are one of the most selling activities in most Congo Tours. Doing a Congo Safari without visiting these endangered mountain gorillas on a gorilla trekking experience in Virunga National Park renders your safari incomplete. With over 200 mountain gorillas, the Virunga National Park has eight habituated mountain gorillas that travelers can trek with the very largest and most common gorilla family being the Kabirizi that has up to 32 members.

safari on congo

Irrespective of the gorilla group that you are trekking, gorilla trekking experience usually starts with a briefing at the park headquarters early in the morning. After the brief, trekkers embark on the hike to find these endangered mountain gorillas with the help and protection of the rangers. Once they are encountered, travelers are allowed up to one hour to be with them. Travelers are advised to keep in mind the gorilla trekking rules and regulations during the gorilla trekking experience. The hike back to the park headquarters is usually less strenuous but scenic. Gorilla tracking permits in Congo cost only $400 and they can be purchased at the park headquarters but because of the high demand for gorilla trekking, travelers are advised to book in advance to secure your permit availability.

Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage

Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage is the only orphanage center for mountain gorillas in the world that was started in 2010 after there was need to rehabilitate, treat and safeguard the mountain gorilla babies that were left behind after the killing of their elders by rebels in 2007 when the park was used as a hideout for rebels. The orphanage has since taken in a number of orphaned gorillas and also acts as a center for rehabilitation and treating of the hurt lowland gorillas from Kahuzi Beiga National Park that are rescued from poachers and animal traffickers. These are treated and then transferred to the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Centre which is a center for the orphaned lowland gorillas.

The Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage offers a rear opportunity for travelers to have an amazing time with these orphaned gorillas as they interact with them and learn of their behaviors. The gorillas in this orphanage are very welcoming and are very attached to humans as you will see them with their caretakers. The Senkwekwe gorilla orphanage is located in Virunga national park and travelers that would like to visit or volunteer could inquire at the park headquarters of availability.

Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees are another kind of primates that can be found in Virunga National Park . A Chimpanzee habituation experience in the Virunga will see you hiking the jungles of the park in search for these lively primates under the guidance of the researchers and the game rangers. They are oftentimes playful and noisy as they jump from one tree to another in search for food. Chimpanzee habituation was opened to tourists in 2014 and it starts very early in the morning at 5:30 when the chimps awake and start their search for food. Given their mobility, the chimpanzee habituation experience gives travelers a thrilling and more adventurous encounter. Chimpanzee habituation experience permits in the Virunga National Park cost about $100 only.

Nature Walks

The great diversity in plant and animal life of the Virunga National Park is unbeatable in the whole continent, it, therefore, makes nature walks an interesting and wonderful experience for travelers that they should not miss out on. Taking guided nature walks through secure sections of the park rewards travelers with magnificent scenery and views of landscapes with wonderful sights of volcanoes like the Nyiragongo. While on these nature walks, travelers should be on the lookout for the varied wildlife of primates, mammals, birdlife and a whole lot more.

Mount Nyiragongo

This is stratovolcano whose summit has the world’s largest lava lake with boiling magma and the volcano stands at 6,500ft. Hiking the Nyiragongo for the sole purpose of viewing the lava lake has seen a great number of tourists visiting Virunga National Park. Treks to the summit of the Nyiragongo active volcano begin at Kibati which is about a 30 minutes’ drive from Goma. The rangers lead the hike to the summit and there are porters that can be hired to help you with your luggage such that you have a less burden of stuff while hiking.

safari on congo

The hike to the top takes about a day and travelers get to spend the night at some shelters at the top of the volcano and then descend the next day which is actually faster as it takes only 3 hours at the very most. Travelers should carry heavy or warm clothes for the summit is very cold- don’t be deceived by the ava lake that it would be warm.

The Batwa Community

The Batwa pygmies are a community of people that were originally forest dwellers who majorly depended on the forest for their livelihood- they are the only known people that ever co-existed with the endangered mountain gorillas and all the other wildlife of the Virunga massif without tampering with them. They were however evicted from the national parks and relocated to nearby communities where they do live though unhappy for they found the jungles their home. The Batwa, therefore, share their life story and skills with those travelers that would like to through the Batwa cultural trail that sees them demonstrating their way of life say how they collected wild honey, hunting skills that they used, the fruits that they depended on plus the various plants that were medicinal to them. They also share on how they cooked and made a fire from just a stick, their dances, and very sad songs that they sing at the end of the trail will leave you mesmerized. Visiting them could prove worthwhile as the funds that are raised go to the education fund for the Batwa children.

Other mammals that can be found in Virunga National Park include the golden monkeys, red-tailed monkey, Dent’s Mona monkey, Central African red colobus, olive baboon, grey-cheeked mangabey, African bush elephants, hippopotamus, giant forest hog, waterbuck, common warthog and African bush elephants among so any others.

Kahuzi Biega National Park

After mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park and the Nyiragongo hike to the lava lake summit, the next best tourist attraction that most tourists ask for in the Congo is the Eastern lowland gorillas and Lwiro Chimpanzee tracking in Kahuzi Biega National Park . Kahuzi Biega National Park is the only place that has the eastern lowland gorillas that can be trekked with Maiko National Park but does not give the option of trekking.

Kahuzi Biega National Park, with a size of 2,316 square miles, lies near the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo just next to Lake Kivu in the town of Bukavu. Established in 1970, the park is one of the largest national parks in the country. The park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1980s due to its vast forest and unique mammal species. The name Kahuzi Biega is got from the two dormant volcanoes found in the park edges- Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega.

The park is managed by the Congolese Institute of Conservation of Nature in partnership with the World Wide Fund and the Wildlife Conservation Society. These face a number of challenges among them the ever-volatile situations that the area faces.

About 137 mammal species and 350 bird species have been recorded to be in the park. The Eastern Lowland gorilla is the most sought after in the park, and these lowland gorillas can be found in two sectors of the park-the highlands and the lowlands.

Major attractions of Kahuzi Biega National Park include the abundant flora that are best seen and experienced when on a nature walk, the wildlife of the park that includes primates, mammals, birds, butterflies and so many more are all attractions worth visiting. Mountain Kahuzi and Biega, waterfalls and a lot more are also worth a visit. The biggest attraction of the park, however, are the Eastern lowland gorillas that tourists travel all the way to visit.

Activities in Kahuzi Biega National Park

Kahuzi Biega is one of Congo’s hidden gems that is less visited and therefore remains relatively virgin with lush green forests, great mountainous landscapes, lakes, and rivers. It is another amazing place to enjoy one's Congo Safaris. The park, when visited, gives you a true African wilderness feeling. Some of the things that attract tourists to Kahuzi Biega are;

Eastern lowland gorilla trekking

This is the reason that most travelers visiting the park go to do. The Eastern lowland gorillas are larger than the mountain gorillas and are also near extinction due to poaching and animal trafficking plus the wars that sometimes wage in these areas. As of 2013, there were 145 eastern lowland gorillas recorded in the highland sector of the park which was a great decline from the 600 that were recorded in 1990.

safari on congo

Eastern lowland gorilla trekking involves hiking through the dense tropical forest and highlands of Kahuzi Biega National Park in search for the near-extinct eastern lowland gorillas. The trek can take between thirty minutes to up to six hours and travelers are allowed only one hour with them once encountered in which time they are advised to observe the way of life of these gorillas. From the dominant silverback looking out for the safety of his family to the juveniles who play around and may even approach you. Travelers are advised to follow the instructions of the rangers and guides at all times. Permits cost only $400.

Mountain Hiking

The hike to Mount Kahuzi offers breathtaking views of the town of Bukavu and Lake Kivu while enjoying your Congo Safaris tour. Reaching the summit takes about four hours and three hours to descend. Mount Biega, however, takes only six hours to both ascend and descend. The vegetation of both mountains is different. Mount Bugulumiza, at 2400 meters is another mountain worth a climb as it gives awesome views of the surrounding landscape including the mountains of Kahuzi and Biega.

Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Located in the south east of the Congo, the sanctuary is close to the park. The center takes care of the orphaned chimpanzees and other small primates that lose their parents to poaching and animal trafficking mostly. The rehabilitation center has since its inception been named as the third most prominent site by the IUCN for its role played in the conservation of chimpanzees in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The sanitary currently protects approximately 105 monkeys of different species along with parrots, turtles, and porcupines.

safari on congo

Lwiro chimpanzee sanctuary is a haven for chimpanzee lovers as it is a place houses these chimpanzees that are slowly recovering from the trauma. Visiting the chimps here will give you an opportunity to get close to them in the field and also take part in their conservation. Volunteer opportunities are available where you can get to learn of primates.

Bird watching

Congo Birding Safaris are one of the most interesting activities and one can enjoy their best when exploring Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Morning and evening birding schedules are scheduled every day where the birders have an opportunity to spot various bird species like the African green broadbill. Binoculars could come in handy.

Nature walks

There are well-established trails that take travelers to see various sceneries and wildlife including primates and birds. Marais Musisi Trail and Tshibati waterfalls trails go through swamps, bamboo forests, and three different but beautiful waterfalls.

Maiko National Park

Congo Safari tours keep getting better and better and when you visit Maiko National Park, you will experience the safari of a lifetime. Maiko National Park is one of the best conservation parks of the Eastern lowland gorillas that find the park a natural habitat. The park stretches to cover an area of 10,400 square kilometers and it extends into three-state provinces of Nord Kivu, Orientale and Mainema provinces. The park was created in 1949 and it inhabits unique wildlife species such as the Eastern lowland gorillas , the Okapi, forest elephants and the Congo peacock. The park is the right place for travelers that are after exploration of the jungle. Some of the tourist activities that Maiko National Park has to offer include;

 Wildlife viewing

The park has untampered vegetation cover that still gives any traveler a true wilderness impression. This impressive vegetation cover harbors a variety of animal species among them the forest elephants, the Okapis, Congo peacock, leopards, aquatic genet, the eastern chimps and lowland gorillas along with so many more you should discover when at the park. The variety and quantity of the wildlife in Maiko National Park makes a wildlife viewing safari amazingly unforgettable.

Given the park’s impressive vegetation, nature walks are a must-do through clearly created trails. Nature walks are a good way to discover and learn of the park plus what it has to offer. Walking through the thickly forested wilderness of Maiko and on the river banks of River Oslo and Lindi, be keen to sight a number of wildlife and birds plus butterflies.

With the vegetation cover of the park, be sure to have a good sight of a number of bird species. Broadbills, Pitas, sparrows, turacos, egrets, kingfishers among so many other birds are what you should look out for. A good pair of binoculars is a must carry.

Maiko National Park has over 800 eastern lowland gorillas but gorilla trekking is not available. If a traveler would like to have an Eastern lowland gorilla trekking experience, Kahuzi Biega is the best place to do it from. Gorilla trekking was banned from Maiko after a gorilla attacked a tourist.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has a number of national parks that have a lot to offer much as they are untapped. Having a Congo Safaris planned out for you would see you discovering a lot more than you could imagine.

  • Congo Safaris

Congo is one of Africa’s best-kept secrets. Remote in the best possible sense of the word, this is safari in the original sense of the word – a voyage into the unknown.

A journey of exploration and discovery that will whet even the most jaded of travel appetites. Congo is far from the beaten track – indeed, vast tracts of its pristine rainforest are far from any tracks at all. The very name ‘Congo’ conjures up powerful images of the heart of Africa, a place of marvels and wonder that few have ever visited.Calmer and much more stable than its larger namesake, (the Democratic Republic of Congo) the "Republic of Congo" is approaching a vital crossroads. Despite its sparse human population, pressure is mounting to fund development by exploiting its natural riches – particularly oil and timber. Ecotourism, although in its infancy, offers a viable alternative. Far-sighted conservationists have established a handful of sensitively designed and managed Camps in and around Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the north of the country.

Congo Safaris FAQs

A gorilla permit in the Congo is the cheapest when compared to Uganda and Rwanda, at $400 per permit. If you are looking at spending a few days in the Congo on safari they start from around $1200 to $1300 per person per night sharing. The price is a bit more than most locations due to it's remoteness, but is all dependent on a the level of luxury and activities you would like to experience.

The Republic of Congo has the highest number of lowland gorillas (different from the mountain gorillas). Besides gorillas, the rainforests of the Congo Basin are also referred to as the second lung of the world (second only to the Amazon jungle), and this is also a very important biodiversity hotspot. You can also encounter chimpanzees, forest elephant, forest buffalo, hippo, the very rare bongo antelope and just over 100 other mammals. The plant and birdlife are also prolific.

Congo experiences a typical equatorial climate, but there is some variation between the southern and northern regions to bear in mind when planning a trip.

If you're visiting the capital Brazzaville and surrounds in the south it is best during the cooler drier months between May and September, while in the north around Odzala-Kokoua National Park it is best to visit in the dry months of January and February. The wet months can see temperatures reach 30°c and with the combined humidity makes it very uncomfortable.

One of the top highlights is most certainly Odzala-Kokoua National Park and trekking western lowland gorillas in this pristine and remote wilderness. Other highlights to look forward to include a nocternal forest walk, an afternoon cruise down the Lekoli River, swimming in the Likeni River, as well as a guided forest walk and vehicle safari. a real treat is to head to Sangha and trek to Mangabey and spend time with the pangolin researchers.

Choose from three distinct areas, from the bustling markets and vibrant growing art scene in brazzaville to one of the oldest protected wilderness areas in africa, odzala-kokoua, there is so much more than just gorilla trekking to experience in the congo., key to areas.

safari on congo

Brazzaville

Odzala-kokoua national park.

safari on congo

Etoumbi marks the point in northern Congo where the tarred road ends, and the adventure of exploring Odzala really begins. From here on in, you’ll be on a voyage of discovery that will leave you with wonderful lifelong memories.

safari on congo

Brazzaville is a fascinating melting pot of colonial history and vibrant Congolese culture. Its varied architecture represents Africa’s recent past in microcosm, but this is gradually being overtaken by a modern, optimistic and entrepreneurial spirit.

safari on congo

Odzala represents one of the last truly pristine and remote ecosystems in Africa. In the 80 years since it was established, it has gained a near-mythical status due to the fact that very few people have ever been there, and the incredible stories that those few intrepid explorers brought back.

Why Tailormade Africa?

Congo Safaris

Wildlife Specialists

With our well established, strong personal relationships with all of our ground operators, National Park Authorities and Conservation Management teams in the Congo, we are always kept up to date on the most recent information of wildlife & conservation projects, ensuring you get to see wildlife viewings like never before.

Congo Safaris

Congo Safari Experts

Clyde & Rob are two of the most knowledgeable experts in the world on Congo safaris and have travelled extensively to most of Congo's National Parks, camps and lodges.

Congo Safaris

Bespoke Congo Safaris

With Tailormade Africa, no two safari holiday itineraries are ever the same. The combination of our in-depth knowledge of the country and taking the time to get to know all of our clients' travel personalities ensures truly bespoke itineraries and a trip specifically tailored to you.

Experience Congo

One of Africa’s oldest protected areas, Odzala boasts the world’s highest density of western lowland gorillas, and many other charismatic species of bird, mammal and reptile in its 13 600km2. A vivid mosaic of habitats supports incredible biodiversity – several new species have been discovered there in recent years, and almost every day (and night) brings new discoveries. There are few places left in Africa where you know that your footprints are among the first, and that by placing them there, you are making a real and lasting contribution to the conservation of the globally significant rainforests of the Congo Basin. We love Congo for the chance it offers to intrepid explorers to have close encounters with habituated groups of gorillas and to spend time with the pioneering primatologists who have dedicated their lives to studying them.

In addition to the lowland gorillas, Odzala has eleven species of diurnal primate and megafauna such as forest buffalo and forest elephant. These more visible species share Odzala with a whole host of fascinating creatures, many of them unknown to the uninitiated. If you’ve ever wanted to see a bongo in the Congo, or a potto, anomalure or tree pangolin, then Odzala is a must-visit destination. Remember that palpable sense of excitement you felt the first time you set foot in Africa? Odzala is your chance to feel that way again, and discover much more than the 'normal' African wildlife.

Book Your Congo Safari Today!

We offer bespoke Congo safari holidays to travellers all over the world, from the UK to America. The Best tours in Congo

Mountain gorilla trekking and lowland gorilla tours.

The D.R. Congo is a home to both the endangered mountain gorillas and the Eastern lowland gorillas making it a must visit gorilla safari destination in the world. Gorilla tours are the main highlights of all visits to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The main areas of interest for Congo safari holiday makers are Virunga National Park for mountain gorilla trekking and Kahuzi-Biega National Park for lowland gorilla trekking.

Virunga National Park is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and notably the oldest African National Park lying suitably along the Eastern part of the D.R. Congo. Virunga was officially founded as a National Park in Congo in 1925 and the main purpose was to shelter a portion of the 1063 mountain gorillas that are left on earth today. This makes it one of the four National Parks in the world where the highly endangered mountain gorillas can be viewed.

Virunga National Park is a vast protected area, occupying up to 7800sq.kms of land area and other than mountain gorillas, it protects diversity of other important wildlife species. These include warthogs, okapis, bird species etc.

Interestingly, Congo offers the most affordable gorilla safaris with gorilla permits costing USD450 per person compared to USD1500 for Rwanda and USD700 for Uganda. The cost of gorilla permits in Congo applies to both Kahuzi-Biega National Park and the Virunga National Park. Lowland gorillas in the D.R. Congo also thrive within Maiko National Park though this protected area isn’t open for gorilla trekking yet.

While on Congo safaris, the essentials for your gorilla trekking or the must haves include valid Congo gorilla permits, a good camera without flashlight, daypack-waterproof, rain jacket/coat/poncho, hiking boots-waterproof. You also need to have medical kit/first aid kit, long-sleeved shirt, passport, yellow fever certificate, trousers, a bottled water, snacks, insect repellents, visa and sunscreen.

Nyiragongo Volcano/Mountain

Nyiragongo Mountain is one of the top attractions in Congo that attracts most of the enthusiastic hikers on Congo safaris. Mount Nyiragongo is one of the stunning and powerful volcanoes in the world, standing on altitude range of 3470m within the Virunga National Park. Nyiragongo Volcano is part of the 8 Virunga Volcano chain set along the Virunga Region and offers the most thrilling hiking experiences to hikers or climbers on Congo safaris. Hiking to the top to witness its boiling lava crater on the summits takes from 4 to 6 hours though this may depend on the climbers’ physical wellness.

Lola Ya Bonobo Sanctuary

Located in Kinshasa, Lola Ya Bonobo is one of the best places and attractions worth exploring while on Congo safaris. The sanctuary shelters the highly endangered bonobos-the pygmy chimpanzees that thrive only in the D.R. Congo. Lola Ya Bonobo extends to cover an area of 30ha and shelters the orphaned bonobos. The bonobos are amazing creatures of their own and compared to some primates, they are relatively peaceful.

Other places to visit in the D.R. Congo

Garamba national park.

Garamba National Park is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and notably, one of the least National Parks in the D.R. Congo. The Park is most famous for its breathtaking endless savanna and grassland which offer Congo safari holidaymakers a chance to sight variety of wildlife. The Park’s wildlife species to look out for include giraffes, birds, rhinos, hippos, antelopes etc.

Salonga National Park

Salonga National Park in DRC features as the biggest rainforest Park and it is amazingly one of the few designated UNESCO Heritage Sites. The park boasts of its huge concentration of fauna and flora with important species including the slender snorted crocodiles, peacocks, forest elephants, the dwarf chimpanzees and others.

The top activities you should expect to engage in while on safari in Congo include gorilla trekking, game drives, visiting the greater River Congo, Lake Kivu; exploring the Boyoma and Livingstone waterfalls, climbing Nyiragongo/Nyamulagira, visit the Okapi Wildlife Reserve or explore the Stone Age Caves of Matupi, Kakanda, Dimba and Thysville.

When is the best time to visit Congo-Central Africa?

Tourists can visit Congo all year round. Cost of a Congo safari The cost of a safari in Congo varies depending on the days you plan to spend in the D.R.Congo and if you plan to go for budget, mid-range or luxury. Best Congo safaris tour packages; Popular Congo Hiking safari Packages – Congo Hiking Tour Packages

The Democratic Republic of Congo has in the past years suffered civil unrest that has affected even the Congo safari parks. Virunga National Park has been one of the most affected destinations and this saw the closure of the park in 2018 for about 8 months reopening for tourists in February 2019.

During the period of park closure, the Congo government and park management were working towards tightening security in the park and ensuring well organized trips. When they felt the planning had been done, the park was then reopened.

To enable effective gorilla trekking safaris in Congo, several tour packages were tailored. Booking became easier but planning became more difficult since these safari packages depart on specific day.

Therefore the easiest way of now planning a safari to Congo is by contacting a tour operator on ground to choose a package that perfectly suits your travel needs, preferred dates and accommodation. For tourists tailoring trips from either neighboring Rwanda or Uganda, your tour operator will be able to fix dates exactly matching the packages by Virunga National Park management.

Congo (DRC) Gorilla Trekking & Safari Tours

The name Congo evokes images of a vast tropical jungle cut through by the mysterious river for which it is named. Who hasn’t dreamed of setting foot there? Unfortunately, much of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the region’s largest country, is unsafe for travel. One exception is Kahuzi-Biega National Park, where eastern lowland gorillas can be tracked in the wild with relative ease as an outing from neighboring Rwanda. Elsewhere, Virunga National Park was open for mountain gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo volcano climbs for several years prior to closing in 2020, but it looks unlikely to reopen anytime soon.

6 Questions About Congo (DRC) Gorilla Trekking and Safari Tours

What are the main tourist attractions?

“The main attraction of Eastern DRC is gorilla trekking. The region is home to two subspecies of these endangered gentle giants. This includes the eastern lowland gorilla, which is endemic to the DRC (it occurs nowhere else in the world) and can only be tracked in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Kahuzi-Biega is a short distance northwest of the city of Bukavu, which lies at the southern tip of Lake Kivu on the border with Rwanda. Tracking eastern lowland gorillas is just as rewarding as visiting the better-known mountain gorillas. Indeed, some might say it is actually more so, as they are even larger than their mountain-dwelling cousins, and low visitor numbers at Kahuzi-Biega make for a more adventurous and less-touristy experience. Eastern DRC is also an important stronghold for mountain gorillas. These live on the bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains, a scenic volcanic range that extends into Rwanda and Uganda. Unfortunately, although mountain gorilla trekking is offered in the other two countries, the Congolese portion of the Virungas (protected in Virunga National Park) has been closed to tourism since March 2020 and is likely to remain off-limits for the foreseeable future. When Virunga NP does reopen for gorilla trekking, other activities are likely to include climbs of volcanic Mt Nyiragongo, which contains the world’s largest lava lake, and relaxing on Lake Kivu’s beautiful Tchegera Island.”

How does gorilla trekking in DR Congo compare to other countries?

“The gorilla trekking experience in Kahuzi-Biega (and when it reopens, Virunga NP) is very similar to what is offered in Rwanda and Uganda. The same one-hour time limit to spend with the gorillas applies. However, as visitor numbers are still very low, the Kahuzi-Biega experience feels more exclusive and the setting is more remote. The number of permits allocated per gorilla group is only four to six (less than the eight permits allocated per group in Uganda and Rwanda). A big difference between trekking in Kahuzi-Biega and doing the same activity in Uganda or Rwanda is that you will be visiting eastern lowland gorillas as opposed to mountain gorillas. Based on recent reports, trekking conditions are generally easier in DRC than in Rwanda or Uganda, and you are unlikely to have to walk for more than an hour to locate a habituated group. Last but not least, a gorilla trekking permit in DRC costs US$400 per person as opposed to US$800 in Uganda or US$1,500 in Rwanda.”

Is a DR Congo safari safe?

“Visiting Kahuzi-Biega has been considered safe for a few years now. In order to attract visitors to this park, security measures have been put in place to make a day or overnight return visit from Rwanda very straightforward and secure. That said, the DRC has a long history of political turbulence and unrest, and most other parts of the country, including Virunga NP, cannot be regarded as safe at the time of writing. Even where Kahuzi-Biega is concerned, the security situation might change, so check with your tour operator before booking.”

Can I extend my East African safari with a trip to Congo (DRC)?

“Most people don’t visit DRC as a stand-alone trip. Instead it makes a perfect extension to a classic safari in Kenya or Tanzania. A short flight from either gets you to Rwanda’s capital city Kigali. From there you can fly or arrange to be driven to the Rwandan border town of Kamembe (also known as Rusizi/Cyangugu), which lies on the Lake Kivu shore near the Congolese port city of Bukavu. Some operators offer gorilla trekking in Kahuzi-Biega as a day trip from Kamembe, while others will arrange overnight accommodations in Bukavu or closer to the park. A gorilla trek in DRC also slots well into an extended holiday in Rwanda, where you can go chimp trekking in Nyungwe National Park, which is very close to Kamembe and Bukavu. You can also enjoy a couple of nights in Akagera National Park, the country’s Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) destination. Wildlife densities in Akagera are not comparable to the most famous parks in East Africa, but this off-the-beaten-track destination is incredibly scenic and rewarding in its own right.”

How much will a DR Congo safari cost?

“Most visitors to Kahuzi-Biega opt for a 3-day gorilla trekking package out of Rwanda’s capital city Kigali. This typically costs US$1,200 to US$1,500 per person. Another possibility is a 4-day package that also includes chimp trekking in Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park, which you pass through on the way between Kigali and Kahuzi-Biega. This will add around US$600 to the price. A variety of longer tours incorporating a visit to Kahuzi-Biega are also available.”

What is the best time of the year to visit DR Congo?

“The best time to visit Eastern DRC is during the Dry season from June to September. The area has a very wet climate and it can rain at any time, but June to September is drier and the forest trails tend to be less slippery. March to April and October to November are the peaks of the short and long rains. The drier period between the long and short rains, from December to February, is a great time to travel too. It shouldn’t be too wet and there are very few visitors around at this time. Whenever you visit, make sure you bring lots of waterproof clothing, and be prepared to get wet a few times.”

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Congolese authorities have released a Polish man who was sentenced there to life in prison on espionage charges, Poland’s foreign minister said Tuesday.

Radek Sikorski wrote on social media platform X that Mariusz Majewski was back in Europe. Sikorski posted a brief video of himself apparently talking to Majewski over the phone to welcome him back. He did not say where exactly Majewski was.

The 52-year-old was detained by Congolese forces in February and later faced a military court in the restive Central African nation, accused of spying. Last week he received a life sentence in prison. No details were released as to where he was held.

Poland’s Foreign Ministry protested Majewski’s innocence. Last week President Andrzej Duda spoke on the phone with Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi seeking to obtain Majewski’s release.

Poland does not have a diplomatic mission in Congo.

Last week, Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Pawel Wronski said without elaborating that Majewski “is not a spy, he is a member of a travelers club” and was just following his “passion in life.”

Wronski said it was due to a chain of coincidental circumstances and events that he found himself in Congo and his “behavior was the result of a lack of knowledge of local customs.”

Earlier this month, the Congolese army said it had foiled a coup attempt and arrested the perpetrators, including some foreigners. Several U.S. citizens are among those arrested.
