Independent baseball league for hawaii's youth, 2024 fall baseball registration.

The fall season is scheduled to run from August 3 through November 11, 2024. We will schedule as many games as possible to ensure your child gets the maximum amount of reps.

If you are without an intact team and wish to register your son/daughter, you may do so and your child will be placed in the community draft.

If you have an intact team and wish to register intact you may do so as well.

An international tour with MVP is much more than just a baseball trip, it is an opportunity to represent the Mainland. More importantly, it is an opportunity to connect with the world at large through a shared common passion, baseball. You will meet and interact with players from the host teams both on and off the field… giving you the chance to see the world through their eyes, understand how they live, and create long-distance friendships. For some it may open your eyes, for some it may bring a new friend into your life, and for others – it may be the next stepping stone in your baseball career.

RICH STIEHL

Director of it & operations.

Rich Stiehl is the Director of IT and Operations for MVP International. Rich is the essential guy behind the scenes that helps to make all of the moving pieces, technology, and infrastructure work smoothly. Rich is also the Director the MVP Baseball School where he runs the operations for hundreds of young ball players and 35+ teams. After decades in the corporate world managing large-scale IT projects, Rich enjoys being able to connect his passion for baseball, family, and travel with his professional skills. Rich and his family have been traveling with MVP International since 2015 when they went on their first trip to Central Europe. Their family has been one of the most well-traveled families in the MVP community as they have been on 8 trips including Central Europe, Spain, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, The Dominican, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean Cruise.

ELI FACENDA

Chief enrollment officer.

Eli’s background in international sports tours goes back to 2009. After going on back-to-back undefeated trips to the Dominican Republic and Italy under Coach Pudge, the travel bug had bit Eli and he was hooked. Eli went on to play Division I baseball at Lehigh University.

While there he majored in Finance with a minor in Spanish, and was also afforded the opportunity to do a semester abroad in Barcelona, Spain.

It was during that semester abroad that he re-connected with the MVP International team and slowly began to support the organization. Eli continued to work for MVP International part time as a senior at Lehigh University and became MVP International’s first full-time employee upon graduation in 2015. Since then Eli has helped grow the organization and currently oversees all enrollment operations and trip concepts.

Eli has developed a passion for traveling and the travel industry, which has led him to visit over 35 countries. Eli currently resides in Arlington, VA.

JASON “COOP” CONLEY

Basketball recruiting director.

Jason “Coop” Conley is the Senior Vice President of the ABL. He began his college career at Virginia Military Institute where he was named Southern Conference Player of the year, Southern Conference Freshman of the year, and to the Southern Conference 1st Team.  In 2002, Jason was the NCAA Scoring champion and became the First Freshman in NCAA History to Lead Country in Scoring. After transferring to Missouri in 2003, he was named to Big 12 All-Newcomer Team and Big 12 All-Academic Team.

After graduating with his bachelor’s degree from Missouri in 2005, Jason went on to a 13-year professional career in Europe. (Germany, Austria, Finland, and Romania) While in Europe, Jason was named an All-Star in multiple countries and won a championship.

Jason devotes his life to youth coaching and basketball skills development. Every summer, he takes youth teams to Europe, Asia, and South America to compete in international tournaments.

O’KELLY MCWILLIAMS

General counsel.

Having joined MVP International as a traveler many times in the past, O’Kelly brings a perspective that is highly valued by the MVP International Athletics team and organization.

O’Kelly advises US and international clients on a wide range of business and employment law matters. He has extensive experience handling employment aspects of M&A and other corporate transactions as well as employment disputes and compensation issues.

O’Kelly has collaborated with some of the world’s leading companies and emerging businesses to mitigate their risks and advance their business plans.

He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Virginia Retirement System — a nearly $80 billion pension plan — and participates on its Benefits & Actuarial, Audit and Compliance, Defined Contribution Plan, and Administration and Personnel committees.

To help organizations manage employee relationships and reduce their liability, O’Kelly works with them to establish industry-specific employment policies and to provide board members and managers with compliance and employment training. He also conducts compensation audits to mitigate risks related to pay disparity issues.

MARK “PUDGE” GJORMAND

Visionary & founder.

Coach Pudge is known by both the Virginia High School Baseball community as well as the national baseball community for bringing a high level of energy, charisma, and absolute passion to the field, every single day. With decades of accomplishments, 2 State Championships, coach Pudge is currently the 4th winningest baseball coach in Virginia High School Baseball history with nearly 400 wins.

Coach Pudge’s story begins back in 2008, when Coach Pudge was given the opportunity to bring a local team abroad for a tournament. After much hesitation and some convincing by his supportive wife, Beth, Coach Pudge got his first taste of international baseball on a trip to Germany with some of the top players in the DMV area. After experiencing the eye-opening impact the game of baseball was having around the world, he was all-in.

Coach Pudge went on a few more trips before he started to brainstorm how he could share these experiences that were transforming not only his life, but also those of hundreds of athletes and families that were joining him on the trips, with more athletes. He had a vision to reach the lives of thousands across a variety of sports with these unforgettable escapades.

In 2012, Coach Pudge contacted now business partner, Matt Foley, to help turn his dream into a reality. While Coach Pudge handled the sports side of things, Foley handled the business side, and the partnership was formed. Since then, Coach Pudge has continued to share the vision with which he founded the company with hundreds of athletes from the DMV area and also directs all things related to baseball.

This thing is just getting started!  Coach Pudge also operates MVP Baseball School, the MVP Terps, and MVP Summer Camp. He currently resides in Reston, VA with his wife, Beth, and 3 kids Samantha (20), Josh (18), and Trevor (14).

President & Co-Founder

Matt played for Coach Pudge, graduating in 2003 and racking up a laundry list of awards, both in the JMHS record books as well as at the state level. After 4 successful years, 2 regional championships and a state championship at Madison, Foley went on to catch at Virginia Tech for 4 years.

Although Foley spent a few years in the corporate world, he was drawn back to the game as a coach, and he enjoyed staying connected to the baseball community. When he was approached by Coach Pudge in 2012 to form what is now MVP International Athletics, he saw it as an opportunity to further apply what he had learned in the corporate world in order to build something very special.

Since then, Foley has served as President of MVP International and oversees the business operations, which under his leadership runs smoothly.

Foley also has a focus in the real estate field and currently resides in Arlington, VA with his wife Meghan and 2 kids, Bryce (3) Blake (1).

TONYA BROGAN

Travel director.

Tonya attended travel school in VA and then worked in Virginia and Colorado, as a Leisure Travel Specialist, specializing in Disney, Caribbean and Hawaii. Tonya planned total vacation packages and enjoyed playing a major role in helping her clients turn their dreams into a reality, as well as help them create memories and friendships that would last a lifetime.

As a member of a military family, Tonya was afforded the opportunity of being stationed in several areas throughout the United States as well as overseas. She had the pleasure of being stationed in Italy for 3 years with her husband Bob and their two children, Makayla and Noah. They lived in Vicenza, which is about an hour west of Venice. While stationed in Italy, the family traveled throughout Europe and cruised the Mediterranean on several occasions. They did not return to the US until their three-year military assignment was complete because Europe had so much to offer and they wanted to take full advantage!

A few years later after returning to Virginia, Tonya and her family joined MVP International on the 2017 Germany Baseball Tour and had a blast! It was then that the MVP team realized she would be a great addition to the team.

Tonya absolutely loves to travel, meet new friends and to help others achieve their dreams…For all of these reasons and more, Tonya is an absolute perfect fit for MVP International!

OPERATIONS & FLIGHT MANAGER

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Tara became an avid sports fan at a young age. She went on to play softball and basketball in college while earning degrees in Business Management and Psychology. Her husband, Ryan, was in the Air Force for 9 years when they decided to settle in Northern Virginia with their three children, Marly, Kyle, and Tatum.

Tara has been active in her three children’s lives, managing sports schedules, school activities, and volunteering to coach various basketball and softball teams over the last 20 years. Tara met Coach Pudge while their son, Kyle, was in little league and quickly formed a relationship that has lasted over 10 years. MVP has been a major part of their lives, with Ryan coaching several teams, and Kyle playing for MVP and for Coach Pudge at Madison HS. Tara and her family have gone on five international trips to Germany, Italy, Puerto Rico (twice), and the Dominican Republic. The MVP International trips were such a unique experience and she is excited to join the team to help others have the same incredible experience!

DANA DOUGHERTY

Client relations manager.

Dana attended Penn State University where she received a bachelors’ degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management.  She moved to the Washington DC area upon graduation and pursued a career with Hyatt Hotels. Having a strong desire to travel, Dana took a job as a Director with an Independent Meeting Planning Company and worked with Corporations and Associations to plan and facilitate their conferences ranging from 100 – 1500 attendees.

While taking time off from her career to raise three sons, Dana followed her new found passions of health and fitness and working with children. She has substituted for Arlington Public Schools since 2008 as well as held several volunteer roles gaining both community and state level recognition. These roles include being a member of the Arlington Public Schools Health Advisory Board, Whole Child Working Group and Healthy Community Action Team, serving a variety of board member roles on elementary and middle school PTA as well as Arlington Little League and being a member of the Action for Healthy Kids Tri-State Coalition. She was awarded Arlington Public Schools Volunteer of the Year award in 2016 and the Virginia Governors Outstanding Adult Volunteer award in 2018 for her efforts.

Navigating her own boys through the world of sports, she has witnessed first hand the amazing experiences, opportunities and lasting memories travel ball has given them. After taking an MVP trip with her family in 2019 to Italy, she realized she could fulfill all of her passions and she joined our team. She loves having the opportunity to engage in travel, sports & culture and to work closely with individuals, athletes and families to create moments they will never forget!

JASON MCMAHON

Jason is a native to Vienna, VA and is rooted in Youth and High School Baseball around the area. He has coached multiple travel, little league and high school teams and is currently an assistant varsity coach at Marshall High School in Falls Church, VA. He played for Coach Pudge in the mid 90’s and went on to George Mason University where he red-shirted for one season with the Patriots.

After college, Jason found himself working with a direct marketing company where he became an Account Manager handling day to day sales and reporting from multiple inbound and outbound call centers around the United States and Canada. He was in constant communication with high level clients ensuring their direct marketing campaigns were a success.

With a quick move to Roanoke, VA Jason became the Fly Fishing Technical Advisor for The Orvis Company. He spent his days on the phone giving customers product information and providing customer service and sales support. He learned the value of customer relations and the importance of building trust and confidence to ensure that each customer was treated with dignity and respect.

Eventually, Jason moved back to Northern Virginia accepting a retail position with Orvis. Within a few years he became the Fishing Manage at the Arlington, VA location. He built lasting relationships with customers that continue today. Jason’s passion for fly fishing has taken him across the United States and he has competed in several fishing competitions that were featured on the Outdoor Channel.

Jason is excited to join the MVP International team and provide customers the support needed to make their arrangements as stress free as possible.

SIMON ROBERTS

Hockey director/gm.

Coach Simon Roberts brings decades of international hockey experience to the MVP International hockey program. As Director of Ice Hockey, Coach Roberts has brought international Ice Hockey opportunities to the DMV community. Along with being the bench boss of several Tier 1 hockey programs, including the Washington Little Capitals, he’s also also been involved with USA Hockey Player Development Camps and participated as an Affiliate coach with the NTDP.

With a background in Strength & Conditioning, coach Roberts also works with the Washington Capitals Player Development & Training camps.

Coach Roberts also grew up in various places around the world and brings a cultural tone to the program that is highly valued by the MVP team. Coach Roberts led his first tour with MVP International in 2018 to Central Europe with a group of 16u players and families. With the amazing experience gained, Coach Roberts has ambitiously contributed to bring new opportunities to the Ice Hockey community at large. Coach Roberts resides in Reston, VA with his wife Mary and their Son, Colin

MATT WOJCEICHOWSKI

Enrollment coordinator.

Originally from Houston, Texas, Matt moved to Northern Virginia at the age of 7. He played 4 years of Varsity baseball at South Lakes High School earning 1 st team all-district 3 times, 1 st team all-region, 1 st team all-state, and 2 nd team all-met. From there, Matt went on to play 2 years of Junior College baseball at Chesapeake College before finishing out his final two years of baseball and academics at Roanoke College, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

During a gap year in his college journey, Matt served as an assistant coach at South Lakes. Since then, Matt has coached with the MVP Organization for the last 3 years, but has been helping out with camps and other baseball lessons for the past 5.

Matt’s passion for baseball has allowed him many possibilities that he never knew existed. During Summer 2019, he traveled as a Player/Coach on our inaugural Caribbean Cruise. Matt describes it as being “one of the best experiences he’s had in his entire life,” and that going on that trip made him “truly buy in to what is going on at MVP International,” and he couldn’t be happier to be a part of our team.

EVE MENDOLIA

Non-profit & event planning.

Eve Mendolia earned her BA in Theatre Arts from Hofstra University and her Master of Science in Early Childhood Education from Hunter College in NYC.  She has been teaching for over 18 years and is currently teaching in Arlington Public Schools. She is currently the Montessori Public School of Arlington’s Teacher of the Year.

Travel + Leisure readers found beauty, culture, and adventure on five different islands in this year’s World’s Best Awards survey, proving, yet again, that this archipelago is one of the most diverse and adaptable vacation destinations in the world. From Oahu to Lanai , they weighed in on their top resort experiences. 

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, inn, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:

T+L readers found Hawaiian resort favorites on the islands of Maui, Oahu, Hawaii, Lanai, and Kauai.

Plenty of perennial Oahu favorites made the list, like Turtle Bay Resort, Halekulani, and Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina. Last year’s No. 20 pick, The Kahala Hotel & Resort, has risen precipitously to No. 3. “My favorite hotel in Hawaii, and I’ve been to all the islands,” one T+L reader raved. On the island of Hawaii, the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai returns at No. 17 (down from No. 14), as does the Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection (up from No. 4 to No. 6).

On Maui, Hotel Wailea continues to impress, earning the No. 2 spot (down one spot from last year’s coveted No. 1 pick), with praise from readers: “This hotel is a dream,” wrote one. But this year’s top pick goes to the much-discussed Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort, an 81-acre oceanfront property that opened in the 1960s and had been in a state of disrepair since a 2011 tsunami struck; Rosewood reopened it in 2023.

In 1965, Johnno and Helen Jackson founded a much-beloved resort known as Kona Village. It was destroyed in a 2011 tsunami that struck the property, and, until 2023, remained the stuff of legends. That’s when Rosewood reinvented the iconic property as Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort . Is it as incredible as the original? T+L readers seem to think so. “One of the most special places on earth, and I appreciate Rosewood and the construction and finance teams for all they have done to restore this wonderful resort,” wrote one reader. Another deemed Kona Village the “best in Hawaii.” Known since inception for its hospitality, the resort has not lost its sense of self with new ownership. “The care and concern for guests is evident throughout the resort by everyone from check-in to checkout” wrote one surveyor.

One of the most special places on earth, and I appreciate Rosewood and the construction and finance teams for all they have done to restore this wonderful resort.

1 Dead, 2 Missing in Hawaii Tour Helicopter Crash: 'Incredibly Sad'

The Robinson R44 helicopter involved in the incident was operated by Ali‘i Kaua‘i Air Tours and Charters

One person has died and two others are missing after a tourist helicopter crashed off the coast of Kauai, authorities said.

The accident occurred shortly before 1:20 p.m. local time on Thursday, July 11 when hikers along the  Kalalau Trail witnessed the Robinson R44 helicopter crash into the ocean about a quarter mile offshore along the Na Pali Coast, according to the county of Kaua’i and the Associated Press .

One person was recovered roughly one hour after the crash, county officials said, while multiple agencies, including the United States Coast Guard, Kaua‘i Fire Department, Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency and the Kaua‘i Police Department, were conducting a rescue operation for the two other missing occupants.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary flight restriction for the search area during the operation, the county said.

The search was paused at sundown on July 11 and was set to continue at first light on July 12, authorities said.

The helicopter was part of Ali‘i Kaua‘i Air Tours and Charters, based in Lihue, where the island’s main airport is located, authorities said. As of the morning of July 12, none of the helicopter’s occupants had been identified.

“We are incredibly sad to hear of the life tragically lost today, and the two other individuals who are still missing after a helicopter crashed into waters off Kaua‘i’s Na Pali Coast,” Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami said in a news release. “While we do not know all the details surrounding the incident at this time, we do know that our first responders are doing everything they can in this emergency operation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of all involved.”

Acting Gov. Sylvia Luke also issued a statement regarding the tragedy.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of those involved in this terrible incident,” Luke said. “As search and recovery operations continue, the State stands fully prepared to work in tandem with the County of Kaua‘i and our Federal partners. We thank all responders and agency partners for their assistance during this difficult time.”

The island was experiencing strong trade winds at the time of the accident, according to the National Weather Service .

The last tourist helicopter crash in the state was also in Kauai, when a pilot and six passengers died in a crash off the coast near Kekaha in 2019.

Sports | Hawaii 18-and-under national team getting baseball exposure on stateside swing

Over the years, the Hawaii teams and T3 have formed connections that allow the players to come out to Ohio as part of the stateside swing. Through this partnership, Nomura’s players are able to gain some exposure – along with experience and the ability to use T3’s facilities in Avon.

“The facilities up here are beautiful,” Reid Nomura said. “Back home, we don’t have many turf fields. So over here, it’s nice to come out here and work out at T3. With Coach (Ryan) Rua and Coach Jeff, they allow us to come and work out and it’s a great opportunity for these kids to continue and develop their game.”

One of the other differences coming from the islands to the mainland is the competition, as Izzy Diaz noted, among a few other items.

“We really don’t see that much pitching with guys throwing gas,” Diaz said, with guys throwing into the 90s a rarity back home. “There’s probably about four people, at best, who throw 90 on the island. It’s good to see 90 out here.”

Diaz also stated the exposure stateside is much different compared to playing at home.

“The only type of exposure we get is just videos. People actually come out to the games over here,” Diaz explained, as several T3 Warhawks in the opposing dugout had been covered multiple times from their high school careers at Morning Journal coverage area schools.

Having such a vastly different experience livens the atmosphere a bit for Diaz.

“Having an atmosphere is pretty OK,” he said, “but we don’t have much at home either because it’s not as big as this.”

One player who made his second trip stateside – as well as returning to Ohio – is Jaydon Geraci, who’s enjoyed the ability to come out this way to play baseball. With the lack of turf fields and having the access to the T3 facilities with the relationship developed with Ryan Rua, Geraci looks forward to the trip each year.

“It’s enjoyable, and I look forward to this every year after high school baseball,” said Geraci. “It’s very relaxing and I get to hang out with everyone here, and just have a good time.”

There’s also a difference in how varsity and junior varsity squads are constructed on the islands vs. Northeast Ohio – with the two squads in Hawaii often traveling together.

“We have JV and varsity players together for Hawaii baseball,” Geraci explained. “It’s not separate where JV and varsity is one season. They’re both happening at the same time, so you get pulled up and pulled down every time. It’s pretty much like the minor (leagues) at that point.”

Still, the exposure the players gain is invaluable, and Reid Nomura knows its critical for his squads’ growth.

“The reason we come up here is to expose these players to the top-tier talent and the next level baseball,” the coach said.

“We’ve had many players come through Ohio and they’re going off to Division I (schools) like Nolan Souza at Arkansas and Kanoa Morisaki at Cal State Bakersfield. The list goes on and on, but it’s just about coming out here to play the good competition to help them prepare for the next level.”

Hawaii has a new regenerative tourism law (and what that means)

What you need to know about hawaii's new law.

Hawaii is home to natural and cultural wonders . On the North Shore of Oahu, Pipeline’s barrels break above coral reefs, creating the perfect ride for surfers. On the Big Island, Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park showcases Hawaiian culture, where archaeological sites offer a window into island life long ago. Maui is home to Haleakalā National Park, where endangered species thrive and volcanic topography looks out of a dream. Besides those, there’s much, much more.

To preserve what Hawaii has and to help local workers thrive, Governor Josh Green signed a bill encouraging regenerative tourism. What does that mean? Here’s what you need to know.

Regenerative tourism: A sustainable future for Hawaii

Some 9,644,519 people visited Hawaii in 2023, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA). While that undoubtedly brought joy to many, it also produced waste and wear and tear on the islands. Not only that, but with so many visiting, preserving the islands’ heritage is more important than ever. Still, people need to make a living, and balancing preservation with economics is a priority. Hawaii’s new regenerative tourism law aims to solve these issues. 

Recently, Hawaii Governor Josh Green signed Senate Bill 2659 , a plan to promote regenerative tourism. After signing the bill, Governor Green said, “Sustainable tourism is essential for the future of our state. This bill ensures that our visitor industry grows in a way that respects and preserves our cultural heritage while promoting economic diversification.”

The Native Hawaiian Caucus was a supporter of the measure, along with the HTA. HTA Vice Chair Mahina Paishon described the bill’s intent, saying, “We need to move toward a regenerative model of tourism that is a net benefit for Hawaii’s environment and communities while continuing to support hundreds of thousands of jobs and many small businesses across the islands.”

Though the law doesn’t implement specific steps, it includes a blueprint to make future policies regenerative. The Hawaii State Planning Act will have “regenerative tourism principles” added down the line. 

Intentions include minimizing impacts on ocean life, reefs, and beaches; preserving cultural and natural resources; providing job training and education for those in the tourism industry; “better positioning” Hawaii businesses and entrepreneurs; and supporting other economic sectors to reduce the state’s dependence on tourism.

Recent reports from the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) reveal that inspectors found bed bugs in several Las Vegas Strip hotels over the past five months. Meet the special agent guarding the U.S. Olympic surfing team in Tahiti

Diplomatic security agents will be watching over america's athletes at the paris olympics..

• One lucky agent was assigned to guard U.S. surfers in Tahiti.
• Another, a former college judo star, has been assigned to the U.S. judo team in Paris.
• And a high school volleyball coach turned diplomatic bodyguard will watch over the stars of the women's gymnastics team.

PARIS − Mike Bjelajac will have his earpiece in. He's packing a few suits − with no mention of packing heat. But he's thinking it's mostly a business-casual assignment, with a bit more sand than he typically encounters on the job.

The State Department's Diplomatic Security Service, whose agents protect dignitaries and diplomats all over the world, is the U.S. "security lead" for the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.

DSS agents will be working with French and Olympic authorities to keep American athletes, coaches, doctors, corporate-sponsor bigwigs and tourists safe in a city expected to draw millions of extra visitors amid gargantuan security challenges ranging from extremist plots and cyberattacks to civil unrest and slippery pickpockets.

Not Special Agent Bjelajac. Bjelajac may have drawn the longest straw in the history of drawing straws: He's not going to Paris.

Instead, the 46-year-old Wisconsin native is jetting 10,000 miles away from the French capital to Tahiti, the figure-eight-shaped island in French Polynesia where the Olympic surfing competition is taking place. The location reflects, organizers say, France's ambition to spread the Games across its territory.

Also, Tahiti has some pretty gnarly waves.

"I've discussed it with my family and friends. With co-workers, well, I'm a little bit more apprehensive because I realized there could be some jealously," Bjelajac said on a Zoom call in late June. It was a few weeks before he departed for Tahiti's black-sand beaches, extinct volcanoes and waterfalls − the luscious backdrop to his Olympics work.

"It's hard to beat," he said, letting a grin escape his all-business demeanor. Agents like Bjelajac are trained to be discreet and short on nonsense. If the stereotypical image of a surfer is that of a laid-back risk-taker, suffice to say Bjelajac is not − yet − a surfer.

The 'right thing,' whatever happens

Bjelajac wasn't born to surf. In Wisconsin, they go ice fishing.

After college, he worked as a police officer in Atlanta before joining a DSS field office in Miami in 2010, combining passport fraud investigations with protecting foreign dignitaries visiting the U.S. He's spent time guarding former secretaries of state Hillary Clinton and John Kerry, as a security officer at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, and at a diplomatic facility in Baghdad.

After Tahiti he's planning on enrolling in a masters program to study diplomacy.

The DDS traces its origins to World War, but the service wasn't formally established until 1983, after devastating suicide bombings killed hundreds at the U.S. embassy and a Marine Corps barracks in Beirut. Today, it has more than 2,000 special agents in the U.S. and at embassies and consulates in more than 175 countries.

The DSS is a kind of sister agency to the U.S. Secret Service, which protects the U.S. president and vice president, their immediate families, visiting heads of state and others.

Men's basketball: Who starts and who stars for the Olympics?

Paul Benvie, who is the DSS's deputy security coordinator for the Paris Games, said that in the Olympics context the job is not a traditional "close-protection mission." That concept − the idea of the sharp-suited agent, earpiece in, sidearm at the ready, ensuring the safety of some of the world's most important people − is something that's been popularized in untold movies from 1992's The Bodyguard to 2013's Olympus Has Fallen .

"It's a protective-liaison role," he said. "It's someone embedded with those teams who has gotten to know the security manager at each Paris site, who can engage with the police and gendarmerie (a branch of France's armed forces) and feed back to the joint operation center," a security hub run from inside the U.S. Embassy in Paris.

Benvie has spent the last two years in Paris helping to prepare U.S. security for the Games after holding security roles in various parts of Africa. He said that while the job is not a "traditional bodyguard" role, any DSS agent is "going to do the right thing, whatever that response needs to be in the moment."

Anything happen, 'even in paradise'

The Olympics surfing competition is scheduled from July 27 to Aug. 4.

In Tahiti, Bjelajac will be assigned to protect five American surfers and their professional entourages: Caroline Marks, 22; Carissa Moore, 31; Caity Simmers, 18; Griffin Colapinto, 25; and John John Florence, 31.

Moore became the sport's first-ever winner of an Olympic gold medal in women's shortboard surfing when the discipline debuted at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Paris Games: It might include helmet-wearing surfers on huge waves in Tahiti

In keeping with DSS policy , Bjelajac would not divulge any details about the specific steps he would be taking to keep Team USA's surfers safe, or whether he'd be armed. A DSS spokesman said the bureau does not share details about its security tactics, operations or procedures.

However, Bjelajac would say that one of the major things he's taking into consideration is the possibility of a natural disaster, and Tahiti's relative remoteness.

Surfing can be a dangerous sport . Participants routinely risk being body-slammed onto sharp and shallow coral reefs. If advanced medical facilities are required because of an injury to an athlete in Tahiti, it's about a six-hour flight to Hawaii, and an 11-hour flight to the continental U.S.

Bjelajac said he'll be reminding the athletes and anyone in their support network to be alert to pickpockets and whether to avoid certain Tahitian neighborhoods.

"If may feel like we're in paradise. But things can happen anywhere, even in paradise," he said.

Culture, corals, marine life − and surfing scaled back

The Olympic surfing will take place at Teahupo’o, on the island’s south side. The choice of location is not without controversy.

Forty-eight surfers − 24 women, 24 men − will be competing. Judges, coaches, journalists, Olympic organizers and, yes, Bjelajac, will boost the number of those descending on Tahiti into the hundreds for an event critics say could easily have been held on France's Atlantic coast, reachable by bus or train from Paris.

"The impact and the risk are too important for only three days of contest," said Tahitian pro surfer Matahi Drollet in a video petition last year as he joined environmentalists, campaigners and other surfers in warning that Teahupo’o’s culture, corals and marine life were being threatened by the Olympics-related influx. An original plan for the event called for new roads, housing units and an aluminum judging tower that required drilling into the reef.

Those plans have since been scaled back, though not abandoned entirely, amid the backlash.

Others are angry over the decision to stage the surfing competition in a place where the indigenous Polynesian culture has, they say, been eroded and appropriated and where France's chief legacy is one of empire and repression. French Polynesia is made up of more than 120 islands, including Tahiti.

Historians believe that surfing's roots can be traced to Polynesia. The British explorer James Cook is thought to be one of the first Europeans to observe the practice when he visited Hawaii in the 18th century.

Still, Bjelajac said he'll know he's done a good job at the Games if no one even notices he's in Tahiti, unless they need him.

"And I'll say this," Bjelajac said of his surfing skills. "It's on my bucket list. I grew up in the Midwest. The extent of my exposure to the beach early in my life was Lake Michigan and some lakes in northern Wisconsin."

Getting better at sports by 'osmosis'

Bjelajac isn't the only DSS agent taking an interest in the Olympic sports of those he's protecting.

Washington, D.C.-based Special Agent Dan Bair is a huge golf fan who's been assigned protect Team USA Golf, who are competing 12 miles west of Paris, in Versailles. Bair, 40, a former U.S. Army helicopter pilot, said he's hoping to absorb some tips and tricks for his game by "osmosis" when he's in the field in France.

"Our focus is security: we're robust, discreet, in the background. We don't want to be seen. We're there just providing that support," he told USA TODAY.

"But at the same time, it's pretty cool, right? We're watching professional athletes," Bair said, letting a little bit of fan boy slip out.

Kendall Dyer, 30, is a former high school volleyball coach in Nevada and avid climber assigned to the bureau's Los Angeles field office. The Paris Games will be her first Olympics and first major overseas assignment. She'll be protecting the Team USA women's gymnastics team.

"I'm really looking forward to the food. I've heard really good things," said Dyer, who has never been to France, said.

And Caleb Lenard, 33, a first-year DSS agent in Houston who will be protecting members of the Team USA judo contingent, thinks he may even have competed against some of them when he was at Texas A&M University, where Lenard was president of the judo club and traveled across the country for tournaments. On one spring break he and his club trained with members of the Puerto Rican Olympic judo team.

"I've been following the Olympics since I started judo because it's the ultimate tournament for it," he said.

"I'll know what the athletes are going through and what they'll need."

Bjelajac said he made a "solid attempt" to learn to surf when he was working in Indonesia.

But unlike his special agent field work, for which he studiously prepares, it didn't quite go to plan.

"I didn't realize there's different kinds of surfboards," he said. They put me on a hardboard which is apparently not what you're mean to start on. I never actually was able to stand up."
