Full Review

Timbuk2’s Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel combines a duffle bag and a travel backpack. That much is obvious based on the name alone. It’s not a new concept either, as we’ve seen it in bags like The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L and Patagonia’s Black Hole Duffel Bag 40L . So what makes Timbuk2’s take interesting?

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Side Profiel

Two features stand out to us: having two dedicated laptop compartments and a built-in mesh compression panel that helps keep the weight locked in. The latter piques our interest since it potentially supplants the need for compression packing cubes . As for the dual laptop compartments, that potentially makes the digital nomads among you sit up in anticipation. So, without further ado, let’s dive in.

External Components

Timbuk2’s bags have always struck us as leaning more toward practicality with less emphasis on looks and styling. Yes, the brand’s not exactly shining a spotlight on the Wingman by draping it in flashy colorways, but that’s okay. The sheer size already gives it enough presence, with the all-black colorway accentuating—not subduing—its huge proportions. That said, does this 38.3-liter colossus have the substance to back it up?

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Brand

It does, though Timbuk2’s website doesn’t say what makes the Wingman feel as tough as it looks. So, we asked, and they said that the main fabric is a CORDURA® canvas, while some parts, notably the ends, are rubberized nylon. The former doesn’t feel as abrasion-resistant as ballistic nylon, but it’s done a good job thus far without catastrophic damage throughout our testing. The rubberized nylon has fared relatively well, too, and has no scuffs. We expected at least a handful since the rubbery texture feels awfully similar to other TPU and TPU-coated materials used on other bags—bags that would often scuff as soon as you set them on the pavement.

The most noteworthy issue we’ve had with the Wingman’s fabric is pet hair sticking to it. It isn’t up to velvet-level terrible, but we do have to take a lint roller to it once in a while. In other words, it’s not a deal-breaker.

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Zipper

Most of the Wingman’s sides have handles, including the top, sides, and front. None of them appear especially thick, nor are any of them super padded for added comfort. However, we dig using the front one a lot. Surprisingly, not many duffles actually have a front-mounted handle like this, even though it’s really useful for quickly grabbing and moving the Wingman across short distances—think across a room or from a car trunk to the backseat.

Flanking the front handle are three loops on each side. You can use these to hang extra accessories like luggage tags, carabiners, or travel souvenirs—or all three if you really want to (we won’t judge). Just keep in mind that the weight of those accessories you’re attaching can make it hard to open and close the main compartment. Still, a few playful accessories might liven up the Wingman’s otherwise slightly “tacticool” look.

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Handle

The Wingman’s backpack straps are relatively simple despite the large 38.3-liter size of the whole unit. You won’t find extras like load lifters or a shiftable back panel here like you would with the Salkan Backpacker . Instead, you get two decently padded shoulder straps, which detach on one end so you can stuff them into the space behind the back panel.

For support, there’s a sternum strap mounted on loops. While it doesn’t deliver quite the granularity of a sliding rail system found with other backpacks’ sternum straps, it gets the job done, so we won’t gripe about it too much. Additionally, there’s also a hip belt stuffed into small pockets below. The included padding isn’t very beefy, but you can move them for a better fit.

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Buckle Studio

The shoulder straps and the hip belt are each stowable in their respective spaces. However, we found that tricky to do once the Wingman’s fully packed out. None of the spaces have much independent volume, so you really have to squeeze in the straps, which is not that easy considering the amount of padding you have to shove in. Plus, you can sort of feel the hip belt on your lower hip while carrying the Wingman on your back with it tucked away.

As its full name suggests, the Wingman can also be carried like a duffle via the included crossbody strap. It has a decently long pad that you can shift around and lets it stay in place on your shoulder. It’s adjustable through simple sliders, and there are gatekeeper clips to mount onto corresponding loops on the side of the Wingman itself.

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Harness System

We’ve always had a love-hate relationship with gatekeeper clips (mostly hate). On the one hand, they’re pretty secure once they’re engaged. On the other hand, most of the ones we encounter are quite hard to engage. This is one of them, and even worse, there were occasions when we thought we’d locked them in, only for the clips to pop open later.

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Side By Side

Timbuk2’s basic formula here, combining a pair of shoulder straps with a hip belt, proves sufficient. The shoulder straps’ ample padding cushions a fully packed loadout well enough despite the lack of supporting components like load lifters or a fancy shifting back panel. Between the sternum strap and the hip belt, we’re crediting the latter for having the most impact on comfort. Apart from the micro-adjustments courtesy of its movable padding, the hip belt simply does a good job offloading enough of the bag’s weight from the shoulder straps. The sternum strap also does its part in pulling closer to you, but it plays a more minor role overall.

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Shoulder

Duffle mode is a different story, however. Wearing the Wingman across your body with the included crossbody strap is uncomfortable. It’s not the strap’s fault, per se, since it’s decently padded. No, the issue boils down to two things: the Wingman’s shape and how the strap mounts along one side. Between these two factors, the Wingman feels like it seesaws on your hip. The strap itself also doesn’t shorten as much as we’d like so that stiff seesawing effect is slightly exacerbated on those with smaller frames. In other words, backpack mode is still our go-to for this bag.

Inside The Duffle

First among the Wingman’s many secondary pockets is the integrated water bottle pocket. Unlike the type that sticks out, this type essentially puts your bottle within the bag’s space. The downside is that it eats up usable capacity elsewhere, in this case, the main compartment. That’s not a big deal, though, since we’re used to seeing integrated water bottle pockets on many backpacks. The bigger issue is the pocket’s shape.

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Water Bottle 3

See, most of the space inside this pocket extends towards the top. It feels counter-intuitive since you’re ideally holding your bottle by the handle to maneuver it into the pocket. With most of that space overhead, you have to push your bottle from the base, which feels awkward most of the time. It also doesn’t help that the back panel’s frame sheet forms one of the edges of the opening, so you have to fight against that as well if you have an especially big bottle like the 36-ounce YETI Rambler .

Next up is the front pocket. It’s off-center, with a sideways opening that leads to a modest space, and is mostly suited for quick-grab items like keys, a wallet, earphones, and a smartphone. A built-in mesh pocket keeps those kinds of everyday carry items from falling too deep. Alternatively, there’s also a top pocket where we kept most of the quick-grab items we carried.

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Front Pocket

A key feature we like seeing on large travel bags like the Wingman is a dedicated shoe compartment. We like using a more relaxed kind of footwear when we’re flying, saving our fanciest (but often bulky) shoes for when we’re actually at our destination. Yes, we could use a shoe pouch and put them in the main compartment, but having that independent space offers more convenient access and less risk of contaminating the rest of our gear.

One of the more niche features of the Wingman is having two dedicated laptop compartments. Not that Timbuk2’s the first one to come up with the idea, but it’s definitely uncommon, even among travel bags. A zippered compartment for a 17-inch device is at the back, while the one at the front is designed for a 13-inch device. Having laptops in these compartments helps straighten out the Wingman when it’s bulging from being fully packed out, though that’s probably not optimal—it’s kind of like using sports cars for hauling gravel.

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Laptop Compartment Back 2

Carrying two laptops may not be your thing, and it’s not ours either. However, this is a potentially useful feature if you’re traveling with a portable external display, for example. We can also imagine using this for a large tablet like an iPad Pro, a drawing tablet, a small cooling pad, or even a travel-sized keyboard. In other words, you don’t have to use it as a laptop compartment at all.

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Laptop Compartment Front

Finally, we have the main compartment. Like many duffle bags, the Wingman’s main compartment opens via a zippered hatch that folds away to reveal a huge part of the interior. Though it’s not all immediately accessible since the sides have some overhang, we doubt anyone will have much trouble slotting clothing and/or packing cubes inside. There’s also a zippered mesh pocket on the hatch itself, which we’ve used to store smaller accessories like a beanie and a pair of gloves.

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Empty

Back to the main space, though, the key feature to look at here is the built-in mesh compression panel. It’s permanently attached on one side with two straps. On the opposite side of the panel are clips that can be attached to corresponding loops on the compartment floor. Clip those in, cinch the straps down, and presto! You have compressed clothing and more optimally centered weight. This is a nice feature for those who don’t use compression packing cubes or want to make more space for even bulkier gear. As mentioned, though, they are permanently attached, so it’s a use it or it-sorta-just-flops-around-in-there scenario.

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Backpack Duffel Stuffed

As we pointed out earlier, the water bottle pocket eats up some space once filled. That said, there is plenty of room to go around since there are 38.3 liters of it. It’s just a matter of leaving a bit of headroom on the water bottle pocket’s side so you don’t make inserting a bottle trickier than it already is. As for what fits in the main compartment, we packed at least a week’s worth of clothing inside, though your mileage may vary depending on how fast you go through yours.

Timbuk2 Wingman Duffel Review

The search for a compact, lightweight, versatile carry-on duffel bag led us to the Timbuk2 Wingman. Categorized as a duffel , the Wingman has the profile of an oversized messenger bag , the loading characteristics of an upright suitcase, and the (concealed) straps of a backpack . On paper, the Timbuk2 Wingman is an ideal overnight bag or a secondary carry-on bag on long trips. In this review, we share our findings to help you decide if this versatile duffel from the famed San Francisco based company is a good purchase.

Timbuk2 Wingman Goldrush Review

Like all of our bags, we’ve made a video review for the Timbuk2 Wingman that you can watch on our YouTube channel Tekuben Prime or below:

Tekuben.com is a privately owned, independent website. The views expressed are entirely our own. We do not receive merchandise or payment from manufacturers or retailers to review products. Our work is for and supported by you. In our post, you’ll find orange links to Amazon.com. We earn commission if  you make a purchase of any kind on Amazon after clicking on the link. If you would like to buy this bag, please consider purchasing it from Amazon.com with this link . Doing so will help support our work here at Tekuben. We hope you find the video above and our thoughts of this bag below helpful and we thank you for visiting Tekuben.com

Update : We’ve since gotten our hands on the Timbuk2 Wingman in the Goldrush color. Since the only difference with the Goldrush version is the color and the texture on some parts of the bag, our thoughts on the Wingman remain the same. You’ll find our quick look video review of this bag in the Goldrush color on our YouTube channel Tekuben Prime and below:

As with the Co-Pilot , there are a total of four handles on the Wingman. All four are stitched on and having them makes handling this bag easier. There are four exterior pockets thoughtfully positioned for ease of organization. One is for dirty laundry or your shoes, one is for your tablet, one is for your laptop and one is for your small personal belongings (boarding pass, passport, receipts, etc.). The orientation of these pockets is considerate of the different ways that you may use this bag. You can carry the Wingman upright, to be worn as a backpack or carried by the side handle as a rolling suitcase without wheels. You can also carry the Wingman on its side, slung over your shoulder as a big messenger bag or carried by the top handle as a suiter briefcase. On paper and in pictures, this all sounds promising, in action, continue to read on.

Timbuk2 Wingman Front

When picking which color Wingman to go with, know that color isn’t the only difference between them. The Blue Voodoo that we have here in this review has a canvas texture, whereas the Goldrush version of the bag has a smoother polyester feel. Preferences for color and texture aside, we notice that the canvas of the Blue Voodoo was easier to scuff on our wood table when we made the video review.

All zippers found on the Wingman are made by YKK, which is a high quality zipper manufacturer that we now understand to be the go-to manufacturer of high quality zippers. YKK zippers are not only found in the luggage industry, but in the apparel industry as well. Take a look at the zippers on your favorite jacket or fleece – there’s a decent chance that it’s made by YKK.

The shoulder strap is decent enough but if you will use the strap often and expect to carry a load, Timbuk2 does have a better strap pad called the Super Strap Pad that we’d recommend looking into.

The backpack straps are concealed. They’re easy to take out and the mechanism for hooking the ends of the strap onto the bag, turning the Wingman into a backpack, is simple. Carrying the Wingman on your back may take some time getting used to given its size.

Overall, the exterior is quite handsome and we like the promise of versatility that the appearance holds. The overall size is suitable for usage as a carry-on for most non-budget airlines . Now, let’s take a look at the interior.

The Wingman has a clamshell design, similar to suitcases. This design makes it easy to load and unload the main compartment.

“That’s BLUE!” was our first thought when opening up the Blue Voodoo Wingman. While we had peeks at the lining when opening the exterior pockets, it’s not quite the same effect as seeing it when the bag is completely open. You may not have to be a fan of the color to appreciate it as the lining has the practical benefit of providing contrast for what you pack, making it easier perhaps for you to spot things.

Timbuk2 Wingman Open

The interior of the Timbuk2 Wingman is roomy as you may expect. There are two straps to help keep your clothes from shifting around too much. We found these to be insufficient given the amount of room there is and the lack of frame support.

There is a zippered pocket on the interior of the door side. We’ve seen this kind of “full length door pocket” before and rarely find it to be of much use given the lack of depth that it offers. Good for sheets of paper we suppose.

If you didn’t notice it before, looking at the interior will make you realize that one of the long sides of the bag (bottom when the duffel is used on its side and left if the duffel is upright) has slightly more depth than the opposite side, resulting in appearing as a base.

There is not another bag on the market like the Timbuk2 Wingman. For better or worse, this is the only bag that we’ve found that can be either a duffel or a backpack, while looking like a messenger.

What’s the expression? Jack of all trades, master of none…?

We really wanted to love the Wingman. One bag that fits on most flights as a carry-on that can be used in three different ways. We’re all for it. But after handling it, it’s not a bag we can fully recommend at this time.

The problem with the bag is that there’s no clear cut way to use it.  The promise of versatility may not be a beneficial feature after all. Yes, it can be carried around with any of its handles, slung on a shoulder like a messenger or worn as a backpack, but it is awkward in nearly every orientation. We struggled with just what the best way is for using this bag. At the end, we believe that slinging it over the shoulder is the most natural position. When used that way, the Wingman looks like a garment bag but it doesn’t have any of the features of a garment bag. If you plan to orient the bag as a messenger and use the handle to carry it, know that the handle on the top side is not centrally positioned, making the bag unbalanced when carrying it that way.

The problem is gravity. When used either upright or on the side, the things you pack will shift in position and weight to the bottom of the bag unless it is completely packed. True with any bag. With the Wingman however, given the lack of frame support, your items push and bulge out, distorting the rectangular shape and making the bag unwieldy. Using the buckle straps on the interior to tie down your items may help but only a bit. Using packing cubes to keep the interior organized and supported may be the solution.

The messenger shape and design may only work up to a certain size. Given the carrying capacity offered by the Wingman, we feel it’s better off to get a bag shaped like a standard duffel, such as  Timbuk2’s own Navigator duffel   – not wide and flat like this Wingman for the sake of ergonomics.

Timbuk2 Wingman Goldrush Interior

How can Timbuk2 improve the Wingman?

We still like the idea and the overall look of the Timbuk2 Wingman. We just feel it has room for improvement. We’d like to see Timbuk2 add in corner support to uphold the shape of the Wingman. It may  add to the overall weight which is one of the features of the bag, but it would go a long way to make this bag easier to use.

We’d also like to see a better placement for the handle on the opening long side of the bag as that too will help with the ergonomics of carrying the bag on the side.

Perhaps adding suit/dress friendly features and shifting the marketing of the Wingman from a duffel/backpack to a suiter/garment/backpack would make it a more attractive product. As of this review, Timbuk2 does not offer a garment bag.

We had high hopes for the Timbuk2 Wingman. We were excited when we found it and looked forward to using it on our trip through Asia. However, after considering the ease and comfort of using it, we decided against it and elected to go with another duffel.

Perhaps our concerns with this bag is just that – ours. Perhaps we’re more traditionalists than we thought, preferring the classic rectangular form of a duffel like the Eagle Creek . In the end, while we’re impressed with the materials (on the Goldrush version) and the pocket designs, we are left wanting more from the Timbuk2 Wingman.

The Timbuk2 Wingman has room for improvement. As it is, we would not recommend this duffel over Timbuk2’s own Navigator.

User Review

I’ve travelled a bit with one of these, including using it as my luggage for a three week Baltic adventure. I agree that the bag lacks self-support, but as you guessed, packing cubes can quickly solve that, in combination with the interior compression straps. I like that it only weighs 1 kg – when your carry on is limited to 10 kilos, you want your bag to account for as little of that as possible. The bag may not be a garment bag, but that didn’t stop me from packing a light wool suit into it, between the padded back …  Read more »

Timbuk2 Wingman Travel Bag

We humans have an innate need to carry stuff around. From nomadic peoples to itinerants, we have all found ourselves in the position where we must carry goods around with us. This tends to be even truer for the traveler. Given this necessity, schlepping things from point A to point B can now be done in style. The America-based company, Timbuk2 has a whole host of nicely crafted bags that make transporting items a more-enjoyable experience. I was granted the opportunity to review Timbuk2’s Wingman model. This stylish bag has a plethora of positive attributes and functions including being able to convert into a messenger bag, a rucksack, or a suitcase.

Wingman in Amsterdam

Messenger Bag

In many metropolitan areas, there is a near ubiquity of people carrying around messenger bags as their primary mode of daily hefting. Since the Wingman converts into three different kinds of bags, I was concerned that the Wingman might be just “masquerading” as a messenger bag. However, in reality, the Wingman makes a terrific messenger bag. Most notably, it features a nifty shoulder strap that makes carrying anything from books to plans for world domination a breeze.

Wingman messenger bag

The Wingman also converts into a comfortable backpack. The backpack straps are easily accessible and have a compartment to house them when they are not in use.

Wingman backpack

Another handy feature of the Wingman is the plethora of pockets. I am a big-time pocket fan, and I feel you can never have too many. As a rucksack, the Wingman could be very useful in a long-hike scenario—especially if you had some gear to carry with you.

Wingman pocket close up

One awesome aspect of the Wingman is its size. Even filled to the gills, the Wingman is the standard carry-on size which makes it a smart choice for a travel bag. There are two suitcase handles—one on the horizontal side in the middle, and one top when the bag is positioned vertically. Since the Wingman isn’t overtly a travel bag, I found the Wingman to be inconspicuous as a suitcase while waiting around for hotel check in. When I took the Wingman to Amsterdam, I felt the bag didn’t call attention to the fact that I was a loitering tourist.

Wingman suitcase

  • Can be a messenger bag, backpack, or a travel bag
  • Many pockets
  • Comfortable
  • Carry-on size for airplane travel
  • Made in America
  • None for this review—a great multipurpose bag!

The Timbuk2 Wingman is available at Amazon.

timbuk2 wingman travel bag

Elektrostal is a city in Moscow Oblast, Russia, located approximately 40 kilometers east of Moscow. It has a population of approximately 150,000 inhabitants, making it one of the largest cities in the oblast. The city was founded in 1916 and became a major industrial center during the Soviet era, with a focus on the production of steel, machinery, and chemicals.

One of the nicest areas in Elektrostal is the city center, which has undergone significant renovation in recent years. The central square, Pobedy Square, is a popular gathering spot for locals and features a large fountain and a monument to the Soviet soldiers who died in World War II. The surrounding streets are lined with shops, restaurants, and cafes, making it a vibrant area to spend time in. Housing prices in the city center are generally higher than in other parts of Elektrostal, with apartments ranging from 2 million to 10 million rubles (approximately $27,000 to $135,000 USD).

Another popular suburb is Kuchino, which is located on the outskirts of the city. It is known for its quiet, leafy streets and proximity to the Klyazma River, which provides ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. Housing prices in Kuchino are generally lower than in the city center, with apartments ranging from 1 million to 6 million rubles (approximately $13,500 to $81,000 USD).

One of the outstanding aspects of Elektrostal is its transportation infrastructure. The city is well-connected to Moscow and other neighboring towns via a network of buses, trains, and highways. The Elektrostal railway station is a major transportation hub, with regular trains to Moscow and other destinations. In addition, the city has an extensive network of bike lanes and pedestrian walkways, making it easy to get around on foot or by bicycle.

In terms of safety, Elektrostal is generally considered to be a safe city. The crime rate is relatively low, and the city has a well-trained and equipped police force. However, as with any city, it is important to take basic safety precautions and be aware of your surroundings.

Elektrostal is home to several landmarks and cultural institutions that are worth visiting. The Elektrostal Museum of Local Lore is a popular destination for history buffs, with exhibits on the city's history, culture, and industry. The city also has several parks and green spaces, including Park Pobedy and Central Park, which are great places to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

In terms of public figures, Elektrostal has been home to several notable people over the years. One of the most famous is Sergei Prokofiev, the renowned composer who was born in Sontsovka, a small village near Elektrostal. Other notable people who have lived in Elektrostal include Alexei Leonov, the first person to perform a spacewalk, and Viktor Zin, a world champion weightlifter.

The people of Elektrostal are known for their industriousness and love of culture. The city has a thriving arts scene, with regular concerts, theater performances, and art exhibitions. In addition, the city is home to several annual festivals and celebrations, including the Day of the City, which takes place in early September and features a parade, fireworks, and other festivities.

Elektrostal is a vibrant and dynamic city that offers something for everyone. With its rich history, cultural institutions, and natural beauty, it is a great place to live, work, and play. Whether you are interested in history, the arts, or outdoor recreation, you are sure to find something to love in Elektrostal.
