Getting Around in Valletta

Valletta, the capital of the small independent island of Malta, is one of three islands in the Maltese Archipelago. Located in the western Mediterranean, Malta is only 52 miles south of Sicily. Your ship docks fairly close to the old walled city. Even though it’s a short walk (about 20 minutes) keep in mind that Malta was inhabited over 5,000 years ago.

English is commonly spoken on Malta mainly due to it being a British colony from 1813 until the end of World War II. Because of the island’s proximity to Italy, Italian is also commonly spoken and Catholicism is the major religion.

Currency in Malta is the Euro and yes, shopping in Valletta is excellent and pricey.

Life on Malta dates back over 5,000 years to around 3000 BCE. Ancient temple ruins dot the island and may be seen from some of the roads. Shore excursions can take you around the island to view many of these megalithic sights as well as include a visit to Mdina, the historic Old Town of Malta.

Many of the sidewalks are ancient cobblestone, stairways aren’t always level and even the main shopping area is on somewhat uneven terrain. When you visit Valletta, you might want to arrange for a taxi from your ship or take one of the colorful horse and buggy rides to the interior.

Another walled city over 3,000 years old, you’ll want to pay a visit to Mdina Cathedral. The cathedral and cathedral museum house a collection of oil paintings and frescoes, wood cuts by Albrecht Dürer and beautiful inlaid marble floors.

One of the best things to do back in Valletta, especially for art enthusiasts is to head over to St. John’s Co-Cathedral in the center of town. Inside this cathedral is a small museum with several works by Caravaggio. Many of the Knights of the Order of St. John of Malta are buried in this very important cathedral.

Shopping in Valletta

Valletta Malta shopping in Old Town

Shoppers will find delicately woven Maltese lace, blown glass and even brass door knockers sold throughout the island. Silver filigree jewelry and locally made pottery is also popular among tourists. The central shopping area in Valletta is located inside the walls, along Republic and Merchant Streets.

Many of the shops close between 1pm – 4pm and reopen until 7pm. If you’re on a morning shore excursion, you may not have a lot of time to shop.

Where to Eat and Drink in Valletta

Restaurant in Valletta Malta

Once again, because of the island’s proximity to Sicily, Italian fare rules the roost. Local specialities include bragioli – spicy beef and olive rolls and it’s common to find rabbit stew on the menu.

Tourists tend to favor traditional pizza and pasta choices but shouldn’t miss a taste of the locally produced cheese, Gbejniet, usually served in soup. Lampuki Pie (fish pie) and Kapunata, (Maltese ratatouille) are also good lunch choices.

Valletta Malta promenade dotted with cafés.

If you decide to walk back to the ship, waterfront cafés dot the promenade and make for a nice finish to your day. Taxis are also available for the short distance back to the ship. Be sure to have Euros with you in case the taxi does not accept credit cards. A 10% tip for taxi rides and restaurant servers is standard.

Places to See in Valletta, Malta

St. john’s co-cathedral.

Front of St. Johns Co-Cathedral with two twin bell towers.

Also called the Church of the Knights of the Order of St. John, St. John’s Co-Cathedral is located on St. John Street. Completed in 1577 and dedicated to St. John the Baptist, the cathedral is one of the most significant buildings on the island.

The interior was decorated in the “new” Baroque style, ornate and similar to the palaces in Europe. St. John’s is the owner of the largest collection and the most important work by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, on display in the Caravaggio Centre.

Upper Barrakka Gardens

Take a stroll through the beautiful grounds of what was once the private gardens of the Italian Knights. Overlooking the Grand Harbour, you can view the fortress towns of Cospicua, Senglea and Vittorosa.

National Museum  of Fine Arts

Located downtown, this museum is housed in an 18th palace. Inside you’ll find possessions of the Order of St John including furniture, sculptures and world-renown artworks of Carpaccio, Michelino and Tintoretto. Local Maltese artists also have their works on display.

At the end of the day, especially in summer, the short walk to the ship can seem like miles. Treat yourself to a horse and buggy ride back to the ship.

The Fortress City of Valletta, Malta's capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the perfect place to start your Malta adventure. Verdant gardens overlook an island topped with medieval castles, forts, the Grand Harbor, minarets and Baroque churches. Many tours visit the Grandmaster's Palace, home to the country's government since it was built in 1571, as well as the must-see St. John's Co-Cathedral and Museum, which displays two of Caravaggio's masterpieces. Various outings stop in the walled town of Mdina (the former capital), where you can shop and dine along quaint streets and tour a hand-blown glass factory for up-close looks into the production of the island specialty. The clear-blue Mediterranean waters welcome divers for excursions among artificial reefs, WWII military wreckage and-most famously-underwater caves.

Popular Things to Do in Malta (Valletta)

When arriving in ancient Malta, an island nation located 50 miles south of Italy, cruisers are immediately greeted by its massive stone fortifications and the impressive, tall steeples of ancient churches. However, Malta is surprisingly contemporary once you're inside its walls. From where cruise ships dock in Valletta, passengers can take shore excursions to any number of historically significant sights including Fort Saint Elmo and Auberge de Castille, or visit the beautiful botanical gardens and stroll the streets to do a bit of shopping. If you're more interested in water-based activities, consider an excursion out to the Blue Lagoon off the tiny island of Comino for some swimming and snorkeling. It should be noted that many businesses and attractions surrounding Malta are closed on Sundays.

Malta's weather is mostly pleasant throughout the year, though it does rain a bit more during the winter months. Spring and summer are both excellent times to visit thanks to dry, sunny days. Maltese and English are the two official languages in Malta. The euro is the official currency.

Malta (Valletta) Cruise Tips, Activities, and Overview

Food and drink in malta (valletta).

At the Port of Valletta, a picturesque string of cafes line the dock at Valletta's Grand Harbor; these range from the Hard Rock Bar Malta (which serves sandwiches) to Chinese and Italian. Lunching in Valletta can be casual and charming by sitting alfresco at one of the many outdoor cafes, or casual and cheap by purchasing Maltese pastizzi (flaky pastries filled with meats and peas sold at little kiosks).

Malata: To hang with Valetta's elite, try Malata. This "haute cuisine" dining spot in Valletta is more expensive than most restaurants but from all reports, it's worth it. This is where members of Maltese Parliament lunch. French and Mediterranean specialties include pasta, seafood and steak. (Palace Square; +356 21 233967; open noon to 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Saturday)

Caffe Cordina: Malta's oldest and most celebrated outdoor cafe, Caffe Cordina, is located on the ground floor of the old treasury building. Most people dine outside, but if you choose to do that, take a moment to look at the inside of the restaurant, with its ornate murals and ceiling frescoes. (244 Republic Street; +356 21 234385; open 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday)

Xara Palace Hotel: A trip to Mdina wouldn't be complete without lunching in the grand restaurant at the 17th-century palazzo, now the Xara Palace Hotel. You can choose from its fine-dining restaurant or its trattoria for a more relaxed (and less expensive) experience -- perfect for families. (Misrah Il-Kunsil; +356 2145 0560 ; open for lunch and dinner ).

Fontanella Tea Garden: This attractive food complex offers wonderful views from the wall of the city along with regional wines, cold beer and tasty soups, salads, pizzas and sandwiches. (1 Bastion Street; +356 21 454264; open 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Sunday to Saturday)

Ix-Xlukkajr: This place serves up gloriously prepared, reasonably priced and fresh seafood. The restaurant overlooks the harbor and the colorful luzzo boats. (44 Xatt Is Sajfieda in Village Square; +356 21 652109; open 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday)

Don't Miss in Malta (Valletta)

The Great Siege of Malta and the Knights of St. John: Join this interactive experience for a historic tour of the history of Malta, the Knights of Malta and the Great Siege of Malta, which was considered one of the key events in Europe in the 16th century. At entry, you'll be handed a portable CD player; you can choose from 11 languages and take the tour at your own pace. During this audio-visual presentation, you will join a group of pilgrims in 12th-century Jaffa, travel to Jerusalem, get attacked by Bedouins, meet the Knights during the Crusades and travel with them to eventually end up in Malta. The tour costs about six euros, lasts about 45 minutes and is located on Republic Street in the middle of Valletta -- barely putting a dent in your shopping and walking time.

Upper Barrakka Gardens: Take time to explore the gardens located at the edge of the Valletta shopping and dining area. The bluff-side location offers an incredible vista over the harbor and across to the Three Cities on the other side. The gardens are peaceful and beautiful and offer shady respites from the Mediterranean summer heat. Plus, the garden area features free Wi-Fi. The lift to the harbor and the cruise ship dock is located there, too.

St. John's Co-Cathedral: The odd designation "co-cathedral" refers to a church that shares its Bishop's seat with another. In this case, the designation was not applicable until the early 1800s, when the Bishop of Malta, whose seat is actually at the cathedral in Mdina, was allowed to use St. John's as an alternative when visiting in Valletta. Located near the center of Valletta, the austere exterior of the building belies its lavish interior, one of the finest examples of Baroque design in the world. This was the church of the Knights; it houses exquisite artwork, including Caravaggio's masterpiece, "The Beheading of St. John the Baptist." Wheelchair access is available in most areas of the cathedral. (Open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday; around six euros)

Palace of the Grand Masters: Get another overview of the storied Knights of Malta, an internationally known Catholic fraternity, by visiting this grand old palace in Valletta with artwork and "apartments" from the period of the Knights. Many displays depict the Great Siege, and a room is devoted to Gobelin tapestries. The basement floor houses the Armoury, one of the largest collections of ancient armor in the world, with more than 5,000 examples from the 16th century on. (Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday to Wednesday; 10 euros, includes visits to state apartments, armory and audio guide)

Republic Street: One of the main shopping streets in Valletta, it's fun to browse or just to sit and people-watch. Stop for a coffee, beer or a gelato in one of its leafy squares. Some of the cafes and stores offer free Wi-Fi.

Mdina: Ancient walled and moated Mdina, the "Silent City," is rich with history and architectural wonders. Take a bus out of Valletta to Mdina and its neighboring community of Rabat and wander through the medieval streets. It's a transforming experience because of its historical significance and because of the unique architecture and layout of the city. You can see the walls of the 10th-century "fortified belt" the Arabs constructed to isolate the city (at that time named Medina), and you can view the opulent homes and castles of the Maltese nobility who settled there during the time of the knights. You can also visit St. Paul's Cathedral, the Bishop's seat and center of religious life on Malta. It's a good idea to get a good guide book or tour guide or much of the historical significance and interest will be lost on first-time visitors. Cruise ships offer the tour as a shore excursion, but buses to Rabat and Mdina leave Valletta frequently, are reasonably priced and take about a half-hour to arrive.

Gozo: More placid and verdant than the island of Malta, Gozo is easily accessed by ferry, which takes approximately 30 minutes from Valletta Harbor. Check out the open-air flea marketat It-Tokk, the capital town of Victoria's main square. The Ggantija Temple, quite possibly the oldest manmade structure still standing in the world (built around 3600 B.C., more than a thousand years earlier than Stonehenge), is worth a visit.

Marsaxlokk: Take a bus to the quaint village of Marsaxlokk for a peaceful walk around the harbor and a terrific photo op of the colorful Maltese luzzo boats, with their curved prows and single eye painted on to safely guide fishermen. This is Malta's main fishing harbor; early in the morning, the streets are filled with open-air fish markets to showcase (and sell) the day's catch. If you don't like crowds, it's best to avoid the Sunday market. The bus ride takes 30 minutes; plan on two hours in the village.

Blue Grotto: A series of caves cut into rocks in the cliffs of Malta's breathtaking southwest coast, the Blue Grotto is accessible only via the sea. Visitors board six- to nine-passenger wooden motor boats for a 25-minute ride in and around the caves. There is no set schedule; the boats leave when filled. The grotto offers magnificent color. (Shades of the sea include beautiful blues and greens, and don't miss the fluorescent hues of more shallow waters around cave openings.) And, when your captain eases the boat inside a cavern and cuts off the engine, there's an eerie silence. The tallest of the arches rises some 140 feet; others, you can almost touch with an extended arm as your boat maneuvers through them. Plan to go early, around 9 a.m., to beat the busloads of tourists. It's located in the village of Wied iz-Zurrieq, about a 25-minute taxi ride from the cruise port. (Public buses are also available.) Most cruise lines offer boat rides among the caves as a shore excursion option from Malta's Valletta.

Visit landmarks that reveal the true character of Malta, especially the iconic attractions that lie inland. As an introduction to Valletta, you will gaze out over the grand harbor from the Upper Barracca Gardens and then walk to St. John’s Co-Cathedral, whose severe exterior belies its sumptuous interior. Caravaggio’s masterpiece “The Beheading of St. John the Baptist” hangs in the oratory. Be sure to notice the artist’s macabre signature in the blood flowing from the saint’s throat. A panoramic drive through the island’s interior will bring you to the Tarxien Temples, a prehistoric archaeological complex so architecturally important that UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site. The highlights in nearby Mdina include its medieval ramparts and St. Paul’s Cathedral, which was constructed in 1702 in a glorious baroque style. The creative side of Malta will be apparent in the Ta’ Qali Craft Village, where you can watch artisans blowing glass and making delicate gold filigree jewelry.

Meet a horticulturalist for a revealing tour of the island’s most intact forest and then watch how honey is produced using techniques that date to Roman times. The Knights of Malta originally planted Buskett in the mid-1500s as a hunting ground, and its flora and fauna are extraordinary. There, you can expect to stroll under oaks and Aleppo pines while following winding paths through manicured shrubbery and beds of blooming flowers. Continuing on, you will pause for photos at Dingli Cliffs, the island’s highest point. Don’t miss the chapel dedicated to St. Mary Madgalene on the edge of the cliff. You will then pass through Mdina, known as Melita in Roman times. The Greeks referred to Malta as Melite, a name derived from the word for honey. How fitting, as beekeeping still thrives. An apiarist will show you how honey is produced locally using techniques that haven’t changed in centuries. You will also be offered a taste.

HIGHLIGHTS • Walk through a forest planted in the 1500s with a horticulturalist. • Gaze out over the sea from the towering Dingli Cliffs, the island’s highest point. • Watch an apiarist produce honey using techniques dating to Roman times.

A visit to the three cities - Senglea, Cospicua & Vittoriosa and a short ride aboard a typical Maltese boat is a great way to learn about Malta’s extraordinary past and enjoy its colorful ports. Walk around Senglea, a fortified city in the Grand Harbour for a view of the historic bastions. Drive through Cospicua on your way to Vittoriosa. Its honorific name of Vittoriosa was granted as a result of its victorious stand in the Great Siege of 1565. Embark on a traditional Maltese ‘Dghajsa’ (boat) for a short trip within the Grand Harbour which served the Knights of St John for 268 years. Today, it is much quieter and you’ll enjoy its grandeur and the views from the water’s vantage point. Head to Marsaxlokk, for a photo stop and enjoy some free time in the open-air market of this colorful fishing village.

Does anyone know which beach the NCL Beach Transfer in Valetta, Malta excursion goes to? I was hoping to be able to look it up and figure out how much cash we'll need to bring to rent chairs, etc.

You could try googling those exact words, or similar, as shorex for many lines often appear in the results with a good description.  Having the full description will usually give you enough info to work it out for yourselves as travel time is often given and from there you can google something like " Malta beaches "X amount of time/minutes" from Valletta".  once you have the name of the beach you can google that too or go to a site such as Tripadvisor for additional information.
