Dinosaurs big and small stomp around jungle-like sets in Jurassic World Live Tour, a live arena take on the Jurassic Park franchise that makes its Canadian premiere in Vancouver. Operated by animatronics and performers, the dinos include Blue the Velociraptor and a T. Rex that is more than 40 feet in length, as well as Bumpy from the Netflix animated series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. There are humans too, such as scientists in gyrospheres trying to save a new dinosaur from the bad guys. We talked to Michigan born and raised Madison Embrey, who plays Dr. Kate, the Brené Brown of dinosaur emotions, about life in Jurassic World.

Q: You have a dance background. But there’s not a lot of tap or ballet in Jurassic World Live, is there?
A: Yeah, you will not be seeing that side of me in this show. I have definitely transitioned from dancing into fighting for this show.
Q: Previous to this, you performed with Marvel Universe Live. What did you do for them?
A: Actually, I’m really excited to be returning to Vancouver. I was with Marvel Universe Live at the Pacific Coliseum in 2015. I played Special Agent Maria Hill, and that was the first time that I transitioned my dance training over to stage combat.
Q: What kind of stunts are you doing as Dr. Kate?
A: She has dabbled in mixed martial arts, so that’s part of her skillset. I get to do a pretty awesome spinning hook kick at one point, which is always fun.
Q: So you don’t fight any dinosaurs.
A: I do not fight any dinosaurs. That’s a really lovely part of the show. We’re introducing a brand-new storyline that falls within canon, between Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The story is that Dr. Kate is working closely with the Troodon named Jeannie, and she’s studying the emotional intelligence of the dinosaur.
Q: Staying in canon is so important these days. You must have discovered that when working with Marvel Universe Live.
A: Yes, and the thing is, the audience cares so deeply about these characters. Dr. Kate is a new character. But within three minutes of the show we introduce Jeannie and you hear the audience chanting her name.
Q: What is it like to interact with the dinosaurs?
A: Our T. Rex, I can definitely tell you that when you are on stage with her, you’re not really acting. When she comes near you it is very easy to just stare at her in awe.
Q: This seems like a show where parents bring their kids but end having as good a time as the kids. Is that what you’ve found?
A: Yes. The parents come because it’s an amazing way to make family memories. And after the show, if I’m interacting with family or friends, the adults have like 20 questions. The adults and the parents get just as engrossed in the show as the kids do.
Q: As a performer, how do you come down after two hours of being chased around by dinosaurs?
A: We have all the action, we have the dinosaurs, and then just as the audience is getting ready to leave our story throws out this beautiful, heartfelt, family-driven ending. It always takes the audience by surprise and fills the arena with joy. That’s when I can let my emotion come out and let my cortisol levels lower and I can take in the audience and the show experience and decompress. And then get ready for two more shows.
Q: So the adrenaline is real.
A: The adrenaline is very real. Yes.

Experience the upcoming Jurassic World Live Tour , an exhilarating arena show for families, as it brings the same prehistoric wonder and dinosaur thrills from the blockbuster dino park film franchise for a new generation of fans. Its highly anticipated Canadian premiere comes to Vancouver for two action-packed weekends at the Pacific Coliseum from May 19-21 and May 26-28.

Jurassic World Live Tour - Review by Rebecca Smith with help from Parker, Winston & Maeve
Me and my review crew were unsure what to expect with this event. We have seen other “Live” events and “Truck” shows and this live action show was none of those. We arrived early for the advertised pre show event where props from the show were displayed on the stage and we could navigate through the area and grab a few photos. This is where we saw a dinosaur (Triceratops) upfront and personal. I am uncertain of the scale they are built to, but it is amazing to visually see the representation in size.
They did an excellent job immersing you into the show. The set was visually attractive and a high quality resolution backdrop added a lot to the experience. There are fireworks, explosions, flame throwers, and other startling commotions that grab your attention. Some scenes it was hard to decide WHAT action to watch, while other scenes were dominated by the storyline and not action packed.
The show was lip synced to a pre-recorded script. The volume made it difficult to follow the storyline with the added sound effects of the dinosaurs and explosions mixed in. That was probably the only issue I had with the show.
The dinosaurs were amazing! You can tell how much effort, creativity, and skill was used to develop these animatronics. There are two main types of these animatronics used in the show. The larger dinosaurs that the pressbook states two people operate behind the scenes and the smaller raptor size dinosaurs which people wear and operate live. They seem very life-like and real during the show. If you score seats up front you will get an amazing experience upclose to them.
My Review Crew’s input. I have three kiddos aged 12, 7 and 4 and they were super excited to hear our newest adventure would be Jurassic World Live. Everyone loved the dinosaurs, the set design, the action. My youngest was back and forth in glee and fright. I had to remind her dinosaurs are actually all dead and these were fake. She stood at the edge of her seat excited, scared and cheering for her favorite dinosaur, Jeanie! My middle was so enwrapped in this, he is usually a fidgety distracted kid I frequently have to drag back to reality and this show had him at the edge of his seat immersed in awe. His favorites were the dinosaurs, the taser stick props the military characters use, and the video game dance references. The oldest is entering that weird ify stage of teenage angst, he enjoyed the props, the set design and the action and he loved that a dinosaur was live streaming during a fight scene.
All in all, the show was great, and well put together. It is a family friendly event with a family friendly cost. The Allstate Arena as usual was very clean with friendly staff. I would definitely return for another Jurassic World Live Event.

REVIEW/INTERVIEW: Jurassic World Live Tour
Have you ever wanted to see giant dinosaurs in action ... but from a safe distance?
The Jurassic World Live Tour is an live-action arena event full of adventure and excitement that will keep you on the edge of your seat! Watch as Isla Nubar is thrown into chaos when Indominus Rex escapes, team up with other scientists to save a Troodon, and meet other famous Jurassic Park dinosaurs such as Blue, the Velociraptor.
Live and in person!
A scene from the new Jurassic World Tour Live show. (Jurassic World Live Tour)
Lucky OWL reader (and Jurassic World fan) Abbott, 11, saw the show last night and got to interview one of the "dinoteers" (the performers who control the dinosaurs on stage). Let's hear what Abbott thought of Jurassic World Live Tour , then read keep reading below to meet talented dinoteer McKinley Lingham!
"I give this show a 10/10. The animatronics, set design, and puppetry are amazing. My favourite dinosaur was the Indominus Rex. There are lots of references to the movies and to Camp Cretateous (like Bumpy the Ankylosaurus). I think kids will like this show, especially kids who know and love the Jurassic franchise." - Abbott
Speaking with a dinoteer!
Mckinley Lingham is a master of bringing dinosaurs to life! (Jurassic World Live Tour)
OWLconnected: Hi McKinley, can you tell us what you do in the Jurassic World Live Tour show?
McKinley Lingham: I portray the role of the Baby Stegosaurus as well as the ACU soldier.
OC: What is the trick to making the dinosaurs feel/look real?
ML: One trick I use to bring these dinosaurs to life is to watch the Jurassic Park franchise movies. They helped so much by being a great resource to help animate the dinosaurs. I play the role of Baby Stegosaurus, so not only did I look at the movies for help, but I also thought since it's a baby, that meant being playful and energetic … so a puppy came to mind.
OC: How long do you rehearse the show before you do it live?
ML: We normally go through a four- to five-week rehearsal process before we perform the show live. That gives us time to train physically, remember the script, and also work with the crew so that we are on the same track.
OC: Do you get nervous before a show?
ML: Even though I have been performing for more than 10 years, I still get nervous. I listen to music and also do yoga/stretching. It helps me calm my spirit.
OC: Do you have a favourite dinosaur in the show?
ML: Blue the Velociraptor. She was my favourite in the movie, also my favourite color is blue!
