Frequently asked questions

There are around 30 cruise ports in Australia, dotted all the way around the coast. Sydney is the country’s largest port, with two terminals in the harbour welcoming hundreds of ships each year. In NSW, cruises regularly visit Newcastle, which is close to the Hunter Valley wine region, and the pretty town of Eden on the far south coast. In Queensland, cruises visit Brisbane, the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef, Cairns, Fraser Island and Moreton Island. You can also venture further north to the remote outposts of Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands, which are almost entirely untouched by tourism. Along the southern coast of Australia, popular ports include Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, Hobart, Adelaide and Kangaroo Island. Darwin in the Northern Territory is close to the famed Kakadu National Park and a great jumping off point for cruises to Indonesia.

More cruise lines are now visiting Western Australia, calling at Perth, Bunbury and Exmouth, where you can swim with whale sharks. The remote Kimberley region along the northern edge of Western Australia is also becoming popular for expedition cruising, with smaller ships taking passengers through its spectacular natural landscapes. These cruises will sail between Darwin and Broome.

An Australian cruise is a great way to get a taste of life at sea. You can start with a short cruise of just three or four nights, which will usually take you on a round trip from your departure point with one or two stops. For example, a popular four-night cruise from Sydney travels north along the coast, stops at Moreton Island (off Brisbane) for one day and then returns to Sydney. Longer cruises can run for seven, 14 or 21 days, taking you to more ports and states. If you want to complete a full circumnavigation of Australia, you’ll be cruising for around 25-30 days.

Cruises operate year-round in Australia, so you can set sail whenever you like. The busiest time is during the warmer months between November and April, which is known as the Wave Season. This period has the most departures and is when many international ships will visit our waters. Spring and autumn have the most pleasant weather and you will be sailing under warm, sunny skies. Remember that school holidays will always be busy and there will be lots of families sailing, so avoid these times if you’d like a bit of peace and quiet. The cruise season in the Kimberley runs from April to October with April and May being the best months to see the waterfalls in full force after the wet season.

Yes, most cruise lines can cater to dietary restrictions. Larger cruise ships will have multiple restaurants on board, so you will have options when looking for menus featuring things like vegetarian or gluten free. If you have more specific or unusual needs, speak to your travel agent when you book and find out if you can submit requests early. The crew and your waiter will also be able to assist on board.

Themed cruises are very popular in Australia, so you will be able to find something fun and quirky to suit your interests. There are cruises themed around country music, Elvis Presley, popular eras like the 80s and 90s, disco, comedy and sporting events like the Melbourne Cup. Australian music themed cruises may even have famous local artists on board. These cruises tend to be short, usually around four or five days, and there are lots of fun activities, decorations and passengers in full costume.

Yes, if you are not an Australian citizen or living here under an approved visa, you will need a tourist visa for an Australian cruise. This applies whether you are flying into an Australian city to begin your cruise or you are arriving by sea when your ship sails into Australian waters. Australian citizens and residents to not need a visa for cruises that only visit Australian ports, even if you sail into international waters.

The whole family will love an Australian cruise. Onboard many of the larger ships sailing here you’ll find family-friendly fun in the form of swimming pools, waterslides, waterparks, sports courts and outdoor games. Most ships have kids’ clubs with separate groups for each age group, ranging from toddlers to teens. They will also host movie nights, interactive game shows and Broadway-style musicals. Most of the ports around Australia will also offer shore excursions suitable for the whole family, from cycling and bushwalks to snorkelling, animal encounters and outdoor adventures.

Certainly! Natural wonders are a highlight of many Australian itineraries. Cruises along the Queensland coast will take you into the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, where you can snorkel, dive and paddle above spectacular technicolour coral. Along the southern edge of Australia, a number of cruise ships now visit Kangaroo Island, considered one of the most biodiverse environments in the country. Visit huge seal colonies, spot koalas in the trees and cruise alongside curious dolphins. The Kimberley region in Western Australia is one of the world’s last true wilderness areas and expedition ships cruising here will visit rugged coastline and isolated archipelagos.

Many of the world’s largest and most advanced ships are cruising in Australian waters, so you can expect a huge range of entertainment and things to do on board. The whole family will enjoy the swimming pools, waterslides, sports courts, mini golf and more. There are also quieter spaces, like games rooms and libraries, are kids’ clubs suitable for young children and teens. Be entertained with live music, theatre, comedy and interactive game shows, as well as regular movies – sometimes screened outside by the pool. There may also be entertainment focused on Australian culture and local performers.

Angkor Wat – From Singapore

The Angkor Archaeological Park offers a rare glimpse into the scale, power and architectural ingenuity of the Khmer empire that flourished in this Cambodian jungle setting until the 15th century. The ruins of Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument, may be the park’s star attraction but the Hindu-Buddhist temples at nearby Angkor Thom are just as staggeringly beautiful. The hundreds of serenely smiling stone faces at its Bayon Temple are particularly memorable, especially considering that they were carved with hand tools about 900 years ago.

Ukraine war latest: Kremlin responds to Biden slip-up - and says West has carried out 'dangerous escalation'

Pressure is on Joe Biden after two major gaffes in his NATO speech, with fresh calls for him to bow out of the presidential race. Meanwhile, Ukraine faced another wave of drones and missiles while still reeling from one of Russia's deadliest airstrikes earlier this week.

Berlin is taking reports of a Russian plot to assassinate the chief executive of a German arms manufacturer very seriously, and says it won't be intimidated by Moscow's threats.

CNN and the New York Times reported yesterday that US intelligence had discovered and warned Germany of a Russian plot to kill Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall.

The German company makes artillery shells and tanks that Ukraine has used in its war against Russia.

The plot was one of a series of Russian plans to assassinate defence industry executives across Europe supporting Ukraine, CNN reported.

After Washington's warning, German security services were able to protect Mr Papperger, it said.

"We will not allow ourselves to be intimidated by Russia," said Germany's interior minister Nancy Faeser.

She added that Germany will continue to do "everything we can to prevent Russian threats" within the country.

Rheinmetall has not directly confirmed the reports, while the Kremlin has denied them as fake and based on anonymous sources.

More now on Russia's response to Joe Biden's gaffes at last night's NATO summit.

The US president accidentally introduced the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as "President Putin" before correcting himself.

He later mixed up the names of his Republican rival Donald Trump with that of Vice President Kamala Harris.

Videos of Mr Biden's gaffes featured prominently on news bulletins in Russia, where state TV has long depicted the 81-year-old as a senile old man.

A Kremlin spokesperson called Mr Biden's faux-pas "slips of the tongue" ( see 13.10pm post ), while a representative of Russia's foreign ministry joked that the US president had shown himself to be a "pro-Russian candidate being controlled by the Kremlin".

Maria Zakharova published a sarcastic commentary that used Mr Biden's error to mock what Moscow says are false US allegations it has meddled in its politics.

"It seems to me that the notorious 'Russian interference in the American elections' cannot be hidden any longer - there is a pro-Russian candidate [Biden] who is controlled by the 'hand of the Kremlin,'" Ms Zakharova joked on Telegram.

Later, at an official news briefing, she accused the "US deep state" of covering up Mr Biden's condition for years.

"The question arises - is this same Biden signing all these cheques [for Ukraine]?," she said.

"The same Biden who doesn't know what country he's talking about. And he is the one signing cheques for billions of dollars?

"Of course, he can be given any piece of paper to sign."

Some European leaders defended Mr Biden, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof all sticking by his side.

"Slips of tongue happen, and if you always monitor everyone, you will find enough of them," Mr Scholz told reporters.

Mr Biden overcame a childhood stutter and has frequently mangled names and misspoken throughout his political career.

The 81-year-old has said previously that his health is in good shape and that he would take another neurological exam to determine his mental acuity if it is recommended to him by his doctors.

Biden overcame a childhood stutter and has frequently mangled names and misspoken throughout his political career.

"The only thing age does, it creates a little bit of wisdom if you pay attention," he said.

Russia's foreign ministry has accused South Korea of blackmail and "threatening tactics" over its potential weapons supplies to Ukraine.

South Korea has provided non-lethal aid to Ukraine, including mine clearance equipment, but has so far resistsed Kyiv's requests for weapons.

The country said in June that it is revising this stance, however, in light of deepening cooperation between Russia and North Korea.

That has angered the Kremlin, with Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accusing South Korea of using "NATO narratives" to defend its potential arming of Ukraine.

She said: "We very much regret that Seoul's foreign policy uses NATO narratives, blackmail and threatening tactics, which is unacceptable to sovereign states."

Finland has passed a law granting border guards the power to block asylum seekers crossing from Russia - at odds with its international human rights commitments.

Helsinki has accused Moscow of weaponising migration by encouraging 1,3000 migrants from countries such as Syria and Somalia to cross the border.

The Kremlin denies the allegations, but Finland believes it is promoting the crossings in retaliation for joining NATO.

Similar steps have been taken in recent years in other European countries, including Poland and Lithuania, to make it more difficult for migrants to cross the border from Russia and ally Belarus.

The Kremlin says the whole world paid attention to Joe Biden's verbal slips at the NATO summit, but it was more concerned with his "unacceptable" comments about Vladimir Putin.

Mr Biden spoke in detail for some time about geopolitics, but all was overshadowed when he mistakenly introduced Volodymyr Zelenskyy as "President Putin", before quickly correcting himself.

Separately, the US president referred to Mr Putin as "a murderous madman".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: "We noticed that the whole world paid attention to what happened, and there can be no comment here, but it is clear that these were slips of the tongue.

"It is understandable that they probably received such a wide resonance given the context of the internal political discussions that we are now witnessing in the US, but it's not our topic, it's an internal US topic."

He added that the Kremlin had taken note of what it called disrespectful comments Mr Biden made about Mr Putin.

"We continue to consider it absolutely unacceptable and impermissible behaviour for a head of state to make such disrespectful remarks about other heads of state."

The Kremlin says Western countries carried out a "very dangerous escalation" by permitting Ukraine to use arms to strike Russian territory at the NATO summit.

"We see statements by representatives of some capitals, London and so on, who do not see any restrictions in this regard, and we see countries that are trying to keep the balance and say that they are against such easing of the terms for the use of long-range missiles," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"But in the end, the main thing is that these missiles are already hitting our territory.

"As for increasing this distance, this is pure provocation, a new, very dangerous escalation of tension."

Sir Keir Starmer told Volodymyr Zelenskyy that British missiles can be used for defensive strikes against targets inside Russia.

But Downing Street followed the comments by saying government policy "had not changed" regarding the deployment of the long-range missiles.

Ukraine's top presidential aide Andriy Yermak has called for an end to restrictions imposed on the use of ally-supplied weapons, saying it would be a "game-changer" in fighting Moscow.

Russian authorities have begun throttling YouTube, degrading its usability in a pattern similar to its censorship of Twitter, according to independent Russian media.

State-owned telecoms operator Rostelecom issued a statement this morning saying equipment used for caching and loading videos were being overloaded, affecting YouTube download speeds across Russia.

But a source from the telecommunications industry told Meduza this is an excuse while the government's censorship agency acts to deliberately slow down the site.

Separately, Stanislav Shakirov, the technical director of an digital anti-censorship organisation Roskomsvoboda, told the BBC's Russia service the government was forcing users to leave the platform by making it impossible to use.

"The Russian authorities definitely have enough technical means," said Mr Shakirov.

"Why can't YouTube be blocked right away? Because in this case, some other infrastructure may fail and, for example, all Android smartphones in Russia will stop working."

He said authorities stopped pictures from loading on social media site X in February 2021 using the same methods.

The Kremlin has denied reports Russia planned to assassinate the chief executive of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, which has been producing artillery shells and military vehicles for Ukraine.

CNN and the New York Times reported yesterday that US intelligence had discovered the plot.

But Moscow says the articles were based on "fake" information from anonymous sources and could not be taken seriously.

This hasn't stopped one of Rheinmetall's competitors, German defence group Hensoldt, from reassessing its safety measures.

"For us, this is an opportunity to review our already high safety standards once again," said a spokesperson for Hensoldt, which produces radar technology for the IRIS-T air defense system used in Ukraine.

The German interior ministry said it cannot comment on details of individual threats coming from Russia.

"We take the significantly increased threat of Russian aggression very seriously," a spokesperson said.

To Australia now, where the government has announced its largest single military assistance package to Ukraine, worth nearly $250m, Kyiv says.

It includes air defence missiles, air-to-ground and anti-tank weapons and ammunition for artillery, mortars, cannons, and small arms.

Meanwhile, an Australian army private and her husband accused of spying for Russia have been denied bail.

Kira Korolev, 40, and Igor Korolev, 62, are the first suspected operatives to be charged under modernised espionage laws passed in 2018.

Australian federal police commissioner Reece Kershaw said the couple allegedly "worked together to access Australian Defence Force material that related to Australia's national security interests".

"We allege they sought that information with the intention of providing it to Russian authorities. Whether that information was handed over remains a key focus of our investigation."

The couple did not appear in person and were represented by lawyers at Brisbane Magistrates Court on a charge each of preparing for an espionage offence.

The charge carries a potential maximum sentence of 15 years in prison if convicted.

They did not enter pleas and will appear next in a federal court on 20 September.

Australia quietly expelled a large Russian spy ring comprising embassy and consular staff as well as other operatives using deep-cover identities, a spy agency official and media reported last year.

Ukraine's top prosecutor has called for the International Criminal Court to prosecute Russia over a missile strike on a children's hospital in Kyiv.

In one of the worst wave of Russian strikes across the country, 44 people were killed, including two doctors at Okhmatdyt  hospital.

The ICC's office of the prosecutor said one of its teams had visited the hospital, but does not publicly comment on which indictments it is investigating.

"It's important to show that Russia itself, at the moment, is a criminal state," said Ukrainian prosecutor general Andriy Kostin.

Moscow denies attacking the hospital despite all available evidence indicating they did, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

A UN rights mission has said there was a "high likelihood" the hospital took a direct hit from a Russian missile, and Ukraine's security service said it had unequivocal evidence the medical facility was hit by a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile.

The ICC has issued six arrest warrants for alleged Russian crimes in Ukraine, including one against Vladimir Putin.
