Send Her My Love by Journey

Songfacts®:

  • This is about a guy who had a girlfriend, but had to let her go. He thought she deserved better, and they both knew that the love wasn't real. When he dreams, he calls out her name; he's still in love with her and he sees her face everywhere. >> Suggestion credit : Michelle - Anaheim, CA
  • According to the liner notes in Journey's compilation Time3 , during the band's three-month vacation following the "Escape" tours, their keyboard player Jonathan Cain listened to a lot of Beatles records. He played the chords for this song on the piano in his front room one afternoon for lead singer Steve Perry. "He could magically weave a melody over anything I could play," Cain said. Eventually released as the fourth single off Frontiers , it is one of Perry's personal favorites.
  • In his Songfacts interview, Jonathan Cain talked about what inspired this song. "I had a girlfriend when I was a teenager and somebody had called backstage to one of the shows and said, 'Virginia still talks about you and your relationship.' It was just one of those offhanded comments. I looked at her and just said, 'Send her my love.' I walked out, and it hit me: 'Wait a minute, that's a song!' I went home and I called Steve Perry up and I said I came up with this idea, and we wrote it on the spot. A lot of this stuff we wrote was just on the spot. Very, very spontaneous. We kind of wrote with an urgency because we didn't have a lot of time together. The road was hard enough. When we did write, we wrote very intense. All the lyrics were, like, within hours. We didn't mess around."

Delving into the Soulful Lyrics

Send her my love Memories remain Send her my love Roses never fade Send her my love

The same hotel, the same old room I’m on the road again She needed so much more Than I could give We knew our love could not pretend Broken hearts can always mend

Callin’ out her name I’m dreamin’ Reflections of a face I’m seein’ It’s her voice that keeps on haunting me

The lyrics of “Send Her My Love” by Journey embody the emotional aftermath of a failed relationship and the lingering feelings that the songwriter experiences long after parting ways. The song’s chorus, “Send her my love, memories remain, roses never fade,” evokes the sensation of longing for a lost love and the inability to let go of the treasured memories shared together.

Written in the early 1980s, the lyrics of “Send Her My Love” resonate with the tumultuous socio-political climate of the time, where the world was grappling with the Cold War, a global economic recession, and rapidly changing social norms. The song’s melancholic tone and bittersweet lyrics may have mirrored the sense of uncertainty and yearning for stability that many individuals experienced in that era.

Moreover, the lyrics capture the essence of human vulnerability and the courage it takes to move on after a heartbreak. The lines “Broken hearts can always mend” and “Callin’ out her name I’m dreamin’, reflections of a face I’m seein'” poignantly express the nostalgia and emotional turmoil that often accompany the end of a significant relationship. In this way, the song transcends a specific time and place, encapsulating universal themes of love, loss, and healing.

Overall, the evocative lyrics of “Send Her My Love” by Journey stand as a testament to the band’s ability to connect with listeners on a deeply emotional level, regardless of the era in which they are heard.

Breaking Down the Musical Elements

The chord structure of this classic ballad is relatively simple yet effective, consisting primarily of the I-IV-V progression. This progression (F-Bb-C) is a staple in many popular songs, contributing to the familiarity and comfort we feel when listening to “Send Her My Love.” The use of these chords allows for a sense of stability within the song, providing a backdrop for the rich and emotive storytelling delivered through the lyrics and vocals.

This slower tempo allows for a more reflective and introspective listening experience, giving ample space for the emotion-laden lyrics to truly resonate with the listener. The steady rhythm creates a soothing and captivating atmosphere, which is further enhanced by the subtle yet significant use of syncopation throughout the track. This rhythmic technique adds an extra layer of complexity and intrigue to the piece.

One of the standout features of “Send Her My Love” is the distinctive guitar work. The song’s intro is characterized by a clean, arpeggiated electric guitar riff that sets the tone for the rest of the track. This is accompanied by a lush and atmospheric synth pad, which adds depth and warmth to the sonic landscape. As the song progresses, the guitar takes on a more prominent role, delivering tasteful and melodic solos that perfectly complement the vocal melodies.

The arrangement of the song is expertly crafted, with each instrument and vocal part serving a specific purpose and contributing to the overall emotional impact. The dynamic shifts in the song, particularly during the chorus, serve to heighten the emotional intensity and create a sense of longing and nostalgia that is impossible to ignore.

In conclusion, “Send Her My Love” is a shining example of Journey’s ability to create memorable and emotionally charged music. The combination of the song’s key, chord progression, tempo, and expert arrangement all contribute to its enduring appeal and timeless quality.

Greatest Hits (2024 Remaster)

In the ’80s, Journey was high on the list of bands loved by fans and reviled by critics. But today, they’re still heard and embraced – sometimes by the kind of people who sneered the first time around. (Witness the in-concert cover of “Lights” by fellow Bay Area stalwarts Green Day.) With frontman Steve Perry applying lessons learned from Sam Cooke, Journey’s Greatest Hits often sounds like a primer in pop idealism. “Lights” is a mellow smile about the joys of city life, “Any Way You Want It” a tip of the hat to Everygirl. And though “Don’t Stop Believin’” places itself on a scale with the songs that open Olympic games, it’s really all about that one small-town escapee on “the midnight train to anywhere”.

“Send Her My Love” by Journey

by Amanda London · Published April 18, 2022 · Updated April 18, 2022

On Journey’s “Send Her My Love”, we find the vocalist in his feelings concerning his ex. Apparently, this is not due to him being the victim of a dumping or even particularly expressing a desire to have her back, as such pieces are usually premised. Instead, it’s more like he misses her and has a guilty conscience.

As presented, the two of them parted ways under less-than-ideal circumstances. Obviously, Steve did not want her to go. But in the grand scheme of things, Steve comes off as one of those types of individuals who felt that his girl was too good for him. And he was also confident that as time progressed, “broken hearts can always mend”. So all things considered, it would appear that, if anything, he cut her off.

But alas, the aforementioned philosophy pertaining to broken hearts has not proven true in his case, as the vocalist remains ‘haunted’ by what he did to his ex. So all of those factors combined culminates in him currently ‘sending her his love’.

Journey, "Send Her My Love"

Creation of “Send Her My Love”

According to Jonathan Cain, this song came about after the demise of a real relationship he was in as a teenager. He said he was a teenager when this happened. According to him, not long after breaking up with his girlfriend, one of his associates casually told him that his ex still often talked about him. It was at this point that he casually told this person this: “send her my love”. According to him, moments after saying this, it dawned on him that those words could be used as a song. He contacted Steve Perry and the two of them composed a song on the spot centering around the phrase and its idea.

Thus the composing of “Send Her My Love” is formally credited to the following:

  • Jonathan Cain
  • Steve Perry

The production, on the other hand, is credited to renowned record producers Kevin Elson and Mike Stone.

When was “Send Her My Love” released?

It was released on the 13th of February, 1983 from the album, “Frontiers”. This song happens to be one of four singles released prior to the official release of “Frontiers”.

Did this single chart?

Yes. It charted in the United States. Here, it peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The “Frontiers” Album

“Frontiers” is a 14-tracked album by Journey, recorded in 1982 and released on the 1st of February, 1983. It happens to be the American band’s eighth studio album.

Recording of the album took place at the Fantasy Studios in Berkeley,  California.

“Frontiers” was jointly produced by the aforementioned record producers (M. Stone and K. Elson). It was released through Columbia Records, an American record label.

The album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart, making it the band’s best performing album in the UK. It was also very successful in Canada. Thus far, the album has gone 6x platinum in the United States and platinum in Canada.

I absolutely love this song. I want to get a rose tattoo with Roses Never Fade written under the 🌹

Personally one of the best (ballards) songs ever made for anyone who let that one get away

“Send Her My Love” was NOT released on February 13, 1983. It was released in September 1983.

This song was the fourth single released from the ‘Frontiers’ album, which was released February 1, 1983.

The first single released was “Separate Ways – January 5, 1983. The second was “Faithfully – April 16, 1983. Third was the single “After the Fall,” released July 1, 1983.

Since “Send Her My Love” was the last single released, there is no way it could have been February 13. Plus, the song made it’s debut listing on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart on September 24, 1983, which notes that it was probably only out for about two to three weeks.

All of these dates were researched. Might need to change your write-up.

The fourth single from Journey 's Frontiers album, “Send Her My Love” reached Number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song was born when Cain played some chords for Perry during writing sessions for the Frontiers album. “He could magically weave a melody over anything I could play,” Cain said.

Frontiers reached Number Two on the Billboard 200 and sold more than five million copies. It was kept out of the Number One spot by Michael Jackson 's Thriller .

The album reached Number Six in the U.K. to become Journey's most successful album there.

Cain drew inspiration for the song from his own personal experiences of losing a loved one and having to let them go. In an interview with Songfacts, Cain revealed that he had written the song for his ex-girlfriend, whom he was still in love with, but had to let her go because he knew it was for the best.

The lyrics of “Send Her My Love” are poignant and reflective, and they capture the emotions of a person who has lost a loved one and seeks closure:

“You see, I’ve been away for a long, long time

And it’s been so hard living without you

Lying in my bed alone at night, I think about you

Lying in the darkness, I hear your heart beat, so close

You know the sound just fills the night beyond my dreams”

These lines convey the sense of longing and heartache that the protagonist is going through as he remembers his lost love. He is consumed by thoughts of her and cannot escape the memories that haunt him. The wistful tone of the lyrics is underlined by the refrain:

“Send her my love, memories remain

Send her my love, roses never fade

Send her my love”

This refrain encapsulates the essence of the song – that memories of love are eternal and that they can never truly be forgotten. The roses are a metaphor for the love that never dies, even though the relationship may have ended.

The music of “Send Her My Love” is as haunting as the lyrics. The melody is slow-paced and melancholic, and the piano and synthesizer interplay create an ethereal and atmospheric sound. The sound of the banshee rises in the background as the song intensifies, and Steve Perry’s vocals take on a pleading and emotional quality, conveying the sense of desperation and pain felt by the protagonist.

“Send Her My Love” remains one of Journey’s most beloved songs and has a timeless quality that continues to touch and inspire fans across generations. The song resonates with anyone who has experienced the pain of losing someone they love and captures the essence of the human experience: the joy and the pain of love.

In conclusion, “Send Her My Love” is a powerful and emotive song that captures the essence of the human experience. It is a testament to the power and resilience of the human spirit and a reminder that even in loss, there is beauty and hope.
