“For 165 years, HBCUs, often with great difficulty, have not only survived and exceeded challenges to their existence but have been highly successful with their goals of service and mission to educate Black Americans. The 2nd District proudly supports and highlights Xi Phi Chapter’s Omega Black College Tour throughout the fraternity nationally and presents it as an example of excellence to the Divine Nine,” Delrecole “Rico” Gales, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. 2nd District Representative, stated.

Harry Watson II, CUP President, the nonprofit funding arm for Omega Black College Tour stated many scholars received admittance to institutions such as NYU, Penn State, Villanova, and others, but their decisions to visit and enroll in HBCUs reflect the transformative power of an HBCU education. “This year marks our 38th college tour with over 2000 students participating since its inception, demonstrating our dedication to developing tomorrow’s leaders,” Watson remarked.

HBCUs are a source of accomplishment and great pride for the African American community as well as the entire nation. The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, defines an HBCU as: “…any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary [of Education] to be a reliable authority as to the quality of training offered or is, according to such an agency or association, making reasonable progress toward accreditation.” HBCUs offer all students, regardless of race, an opportunity to develop their skills and talents. These institutions train young people who go on to serve domestically and internationally in the professions as entrepreneurs and in the public and private sectors.

Omega BCT has become one of Community Uplift Through Perseverance (CUP’s) in conjunction with Xi Phi Chapter one of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc’s most successful and recognized signature initiatives.

It identifies and prepares students of color for visitation and academic review by HBCUs, and, ultimately, for leadership roles in society.

Partnering with NY Metropolitan area high schools, community organizations, non-profit foundations, and state agencies, the tour annually engages over 50 students eager to learn about higher education options.

The Omega BCT program begins with an aggressive, citywide student talent search. Between 300 to 500 youth applications are received of which approximately 50 students are selected — school counselors, educators, administrators and parents nominate. Students complete a weekend workshop program that includes two parent sessions.

FUTURE GOALS

At the cost of roughly $65,000 per tour, Xi Phi Chapter and CUP, Inc. We seek to expand the pool of academically qualified candidates, using methods that are supportive of the role that HBCUs play in the US college educational system through the development of holistic and inclusive workshops that provide young people and their parents with the knowledge and support services they need to navigate the college admissions, visitation, and admissions processes.

Our fundraising efforts are administered through Community Uplift Through Perseverance Inc. (C.U.P. Inc.) a 501(c)(3) organization which in partnership with Xi Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., supports and sponsors the Omega BCT and its workshop’s efforts to promote programs and services to enhance the education of underserved students, and provide scholarships to support deserving individuals.

Extending our commitment to leadership, CUP’s future planning includes: • Forming partnerships with select HBCU’s to develop a long-term scholarship program.

• Investment in Omega BCT student scholars as a testament to honoring the highest academic standards that the next generation of leaders embody.

• Establishment of partnership HBCU awards for four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships.

IMG-20190220-WA0033

The Omega BCT program seeks to partner with HBCU’s in a holistic, cost-effective way to complement the admissions processes by identifying top-notch students from diverse communities who might not otherwise be exposed to historically black colleges and universities. By developing HBCU partnerships, these institutions will be able to expand their pool of highly-qualified applicants and, in so doing, helping to shine a bright light our long-standing Black educational ideals.
