Felt like a valued customer.

Just booked 2 river cruises for next year. Really appreciated being able to book on the phone, as I was able to ask questions along the way, which is not an option when booking online. Gemma was very helpful and made me feel like a valued customer.

The Good , the bad, the ugly

Land of rising sun tour March-April 2024 Good- Communication for booking was good. However, we asked to correct booking from twin beds to double when went on holiday this was not done. So spent 12 night separate. Great little booklet sent before with all details of hotels, trips was very useful. Overall the trip in Japan was amazing because of the Japanese people, places, culture, local guides, fellow travelers. Respect out there to our fellow travelers, you were all wonderful companions. Hotels were great but could have been split more evenly for each stop over in each city. Bullet train amazing ( forget the coach from city to city , the bullet train is quicker) Bad- The guide was “ set up “ and a stand in. He was obviously a seasoned and experienced guide but for Turkey, not Japan. Communication was poor and although a top bloke his knowledge was at best poor & lacking. The party number was too “BIg”. -X40 people. I know you can book smaller but come on x40 people!!! The tours and itinerary were so rushed everyday as we spent 30 minutes getting on & off the coach!! More breaks in the week for a little independence would have been appreciated & deal with jetlag! No welcome meeting to discuss itinerary No contact numbers given for emergencies. No meal first night after we traveled x13 hours on a plane! Ugly- First time trying a escorted tour, don’t think we would do that again, not impressed with organizers ( except amazing , gorgeous knowledgeable local guides which i could book myself) Dont get me wrong we had a great time but organization & communication should i suspect be your top priority as it would have run alot more smoothly.

Thank you for sharing your experience and we look forward to welcoming you.

It should not be this hard to book a holiday - Terrible experience.

I originally booked this holiday to Japan on 12.3.24. Because I wanted business class flights told I would get a call back to confirm availability/price. No call back. 2. 14.3.24. No call back so called again. Bookings team member told me that transport had still not confirmed availability of business class flights would chase and call back. No call back. 3. 19/3/24 No call back. So called for 3rd time. Told that business class flights had now been confirmed, but original hold on my bank card had now expired so had to rebook holiday. Told by that confirmation documents/email would follow. 4.27/3/24. No E mail or confirmation docs. Called and told bookings team member I wanted to make a complaint. Rep very helpful chased confirmation E mails and phoned back later in the day to confirm I had got them. Overall a terrible booking experience, compared to competitors I have used. e.g Titan, Distant Journeys

May we sincerely apologise for the service you have received on this occasion and we offer our assurance that this is not the standard that we aspire to offer our valued guests. I have booked with Riviera a few times…

I have booked with Riviera a few times now and have always found my dealings with the company and its agents positive. Agents are always helpful and well informed to guide one through the booking process

Thank you for your review and we are delighted to hear you are satisfied with our service. We look forward to welcoming you again!

Telephone was answered quickly

Telephone was answered quickly. I wasn’t kept waiting listening to music. Riviera Travel representative was very helpful and informative. I had already looked online and found the holiday but I decided to book by phone as I had a few questions. I haven’t booked with the company before but I was made to feel like a valued customer.

Efficient and Helpful

No long wait to speak to an operative on the phone line. Gemma was friendly, informative and helpful. The booking process was simple, although the website needs improvement.

Riviera Travel “Deep South America”

Riviera Travel “Deep South America” This tour has just been changed. Instead of using the Amtrak train from Memphis to New Orleans the journey is done by coach. For holiday makers travelling in 2025 the good news is that the holiday is around £1000 cheaper than this year to account for this. For people like myself travelling this year who have booked and paid for the holiday with the train it is a measly £50 refund. No, no return call even though I phoned and left a message

Good morning Mr Emmerson we are sorry we keep missing each other .I have left a voicemail with my direct line for you to call when you are available and look I forward to speaking to you, Customer Relations Manager

More understanding and patient customer service needed.

The booking process became quite stressful for myself, explaining the process more clearly for someone who doesn’t travel and has never flown before would have been helpful, especially as I explained when I first contacted Riviera travel that I had never flown before and was autistic. I am still unsure about some aspects of my booking but have found that when I contact you the customer service team are not very patient or understanding. It would be helpful if your customer service team understood that some people need more patience and understanding when asking questions. I will delete my booking reference number so please let me know you have it.

Date of experience : April 03, 2024

Thank you for your booking and for your review. We are extremely sorry to hear that the service you received fell short of the high standards you should have expected. We are keen to address this and would be grateful if you could provide your booking reference so we can further investigate. We would like to ensure you have all the details you need for your holiday and look forward to hearing from you. Please accept our sincerest apologies once again. Kind regards, Riviera Travel Update: Many thanks for sending your reference and we will make contact with you directly. Kind regards, Riviera Travel

Excellent service

I have been on holidays with Riviera twice before and they were excellent. Having browsed a tour of classical Italy I was tempted to book it there and then, but wanted to discuss it with my husband, who was away, first. I was a bit concerned as I know that this holidays sell fast. I later received a call from one of the company's sales executives, Laurie Mathieson. He was really helpful , answered all my questions and offered to save to holiday over the weekend until 6pm on the Monday. I've now booked. Thank you Laurie and Riviera!

The best of Japan Tour

We have just returned from Japan and could not fault the trip . The itinerary was well planned and hotels excellent. Our tour managed Paul was first class with an excellent sense of humour and went out of his way to give short tours at each new destination if needed. Our local guides were also brilliant especially the lovely Juri on the Tokyo leg . Even our bus driver was charming. We would highly recommend this tour as a taster for Japan .

Excellent advice

From the point of initial contact Riviera have been extremely helpful with advice and guidance towards our forthcoming holiday. The brochure for European Tours sets out fully the extent of the various itineraries and the ease of which to follow is a bonus. Looking forward to our next escorted tour very much.

Great advice and useful answers to all questions. Booking is super easy and you are never held waiting for the phone to be answered. Always great to quickly speak to an actual human being rather than be referred to online. Fantastic customer service.

Paris CDG, EasyJet and Transfer

I really rate this company and have been invited several times to review them in this forum. Each time I have given them five stars and complemented them on every aspect of the execution of their tours. I have been invited to comment on their booking procedure based on my recent experiences. I have just returned from a holiday and the route EasyJet from Manchester to Paris CDG and return that RT included in the holiday is simply not suitable for those needing assistance at the airport. I called RT from Paris CDG whilst waiting to board the plane home, not to complain but to advise that there was no assistance at this airport and as the terminal is very large (we did 4000 steps) between baggage collection /check-in and where the RT bus was parked they needed to put something in place other than what they did with our group and to advise customers thinking of taking a holiday that this route is unsuitable for those with mobility issues. RT had balanced a 90 year old man on a pile of suitcases on a luggage trolley to get him across the terminal. Melissa who to the call seemed to appreciate how unsafe and unsatisfactory the situation was for the 4 of us that had required assistance and asked me to put the issue in writing so as the Company could act on the feedback. I did. But I regret to say that RT’s response is one of waffle worthy of a Politician and avoids addressing any specifics when it comes to what advice they will give with respect to the use of EasyJet and Paris CDG. Very disappointing. So I have learned to my cost that when booking one must not take at face value their advice about how suitable a holiday is for those of us with mobility issues. Perhaps they will respond here as to how they will move elderly people across this airport? The response I got is it really is every man for himself and customers should do their own research on airport facilities before booking. Edit after RT response. This is precisely the waffle reply I am talking about. I know you discuss mobility at booking I have booked 5 holidays with you. AT PARIS CDG YOUR COACH PARKS 1.7 MILES AWAY FROM BAGGAGE PICK UP OR CHECK-IN (DEPENDING ON ARRIVAL OR DEPARTURE) IF USING EASYJET AND THERE IS NO ASSISTANCE. YOUR REP, ERIC, LOADED A 90 YEAR OLD MAN ON A PILE OF SUITCASES TO GET HIM TO YOUR COACH. YOU SEEM TO BE MISSING THE POINT THAT YOUR COACH IS PARKED MILES AWAY FROM WHERE PASSENGERS ARE MET OR CHECK-IN AND THERE IS NO AIRPORT ASSISTANCE.

Good afternoon and thank you for your comments. Please may we offer you reassurance that all customers mobility is discussed as part of the booking procedure. We actively prompt customers to advise us of any mobility requirements, we then guide them through a series of questions to understand their mobility level and suitability for the tours. Once this has taken place, we can offer the customer an informed choice of holiday that is both suitable and safe. This will be a personal one to one conversation, as we do understand that everyone’s needs will vary. Furthermore, as an additional service, we can arrange special assistance with the airline which will generally involve check in desk to departure gate. As a tour operator we do not include personal assistance. We hope we have offered some further reassurance that all customers are given the right advice for their travel needs. You may also find more details on this subject upon our website, which may be of interest. Best wishes, Riviera Travel

Not the first time and will not be the last

What we wanted and a very reasonable price. When contacted the person provided all the answers. More importantly when we told a friend we are going on the trip they extolled the quality of the trip they had also made.

Thank you for sharing your experience and we are so pleased you were satisfied with our service. We look forward to welcoming you on your holiday.

We arrive at the dock where we transfer on to our boat for the final part of our journey through the complex maze of natural canals to our home for the next two nights, the Aninga, Evergreen or Pachira eco-lodges, on full board basis. After lunch we visit the nearby small picturesque town of Tortuguero and the Caribbean Conservation Corporation museum dedicated to studying the thousands of Atlantic Green, Hawksbill and Leatherback turtles who come to lay their eggs on the protected beaches here between July to October every year. As the sun sets and the sounds of the tropical forest fill the air, you may look forward to sampling some typical Costa Rican cuisine in the hotel’s restaurant. (B, L, D)

Location: Parque Nacional Tortuguero

Accommodation name: pachira lodge.

After breakfast we set off for a fascinating walk along one of the nature trails around our lodge. means ‘turtle catcher’ and the many species of turtles which lay their eggs on these beaches came close to extinction until the area was declared a national park. You can also expect to see caimans, several types of monkeys and a huge number of endemic and migratory bird species, including toucans, macaws and raptors. After some time to relax by the pool during the hottest part of the day, in the afternoon we continue our exploration by boat, along the lush green waterways of this unique eco-system. (B, L, D)

Today we head north, close to the Nicaraguan border, to the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. More than 300 bird species have been identified here, including kingfishers, ibis, toucans, storks and even a type of vulture, plus you’re likely to see iguanas, caimans and numerous monkey species can also be spotted along the river banks. (B, L)

Accommodation name: el establo mountain hotel, meals included: breakfast, dinner.

In the morning, embark on a walking tour in the foothills of Arena Volcano, enjoying more close-up scenic views of the volcano. We turn south today to drive towards the Monteverde Cloud Forest where we stay for two nights. Tonight, dinner is included. (B, D)

This stunning Cloud Forest boasts an extraordinarily diverse ecosystem, being home to 120 species of reptiles and amphibians, 130 species of mammals and an astounding 500 species of birds, not to mention more than 3,000 species of plants. Possibly the best way to enjoy all this is from above: the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges are a system of walkways that offer a unique view into the jungle from up to 180 feet above the forest floor. If you’re feeling really adventurous (and at extra charge), this is where you can also enjoy what is considered to be the country’s best ‘zip-line’ experience. This afternoon enjoy lunch and a tour of a traditional Costa Rican coffee farm where you’ll see how one of Costa Rica’s top exports is grown in this tropical region and its importance in the development of the country as a whole. Your evening is free to try out one of the many excellent local restaurants, cafés and bars. (B, L)

This morning we drive towards the shores of the striking Pacific coast to the region of Guanacaste, one of the most beautiful places in the country, with an exotic combination of exquisite beaches and an exuberant tropical forest. On the way, we stop at the bustling town of Liberia, for some free time to have a stroll and maybe sample some of the local cuisine. Our luxurious, five-star hotel for three nights is close to the charming seaside resort of Tamarindo, where it’s not unusual to see iguanas and white-faced monkeys on the beach! This evening we’ll take you into Tamarindo where there’s plenty of great food, music and friendly bars to choose from. (B)

Location: Parque Nacional Palo Verde

Costa Rica’s real riches come from its immensely fertile volcanic soils which have created a biodiversity of incredible range, variety and complexity – a veritable natural paradise! In fact, more than 25% of the country is designated as protected reserves or national parks. Today, we take a guided tour to Palo Verde National Park, one of Costa Rica’s most popular conservation areas. Its wide range of land and marine biodiversity make this one of Central America’s most impressive natural habitats. Your local guide will lead you by boat through the waterways of this tropical paradise to discover a unique combination of thick coastal forest, rivers and mangrove lagoons which are home to more than 109 species of mammals and 184 species of birds. One of its most well-known and likeable inhabitants is the three-toed sloth, but this is not even close to the tip of the iceberg. You’ll also observe several species of monkeys, green iguanas, hundreds of varieties of brightly coloured tree frogs, hummingbirds a-plenty, scarlet macaws, blue-winged teal – the list just goes on and on! (B, L)

Location: Guanacaste Province

Enjoy all the pleasures of your final day in your luxury hotel. You can take it easy on the beach or beside the hotel pool, with a piña colada or daiquiri in hand, play a round of golf, try out the spa or perhaps join the optional sunset cruise along the coast with picturesque views and time for snorkelling. We say farewell to this incredible country with an included dinner in Tamarindo. (B, D)

Reviews of this Operator

This review is for the....

This review is for the italian Lake Como trip Aug 1-8 Wow what a trip. Riviera from start to finish were excellent the booking and help line answering questions were very good and clear. The travel booklet you get is laid out that it is simple to read and follow with step by step info from booking in to flights to meeting the guides. Our guide Matt Purse was just the best guide and real credit to Riviera with his knowledge and straight forward approach to running the trips. Matt kept us informed and told us all the sort of info you want to know without going over the top....This chap should teach other reps ..thank you so much. The coaches they use are all clean and well equipped with usb chargers and have aircon. The places chosen to visit were well researched even down to where coaches park or drop you off. The Bernina Express was the highlight for our family and matts photo tip was welcomed. The only down point was the hotel,a little dated and evening meal in main restuarant was a bit of a let down. I think we were lucky with our room on level 7 and with balcony as the walls are very thin and noise travels. We would book again with riviera

I have been on three...

I have been on three trips with Riviera Travel so far, with two more booked during 2024. Highly recommended. Excellent tour guides. Great program of visits. Great hotels used.

We would go again in a heartbeat

Oh my goodness, what a relief it was to actually get away! Full marks to all at Riviera for keeping us up to date before our trip and for the help so cheerfully and patiently given with the extra admin that Covid brought our way. We felt totally safe with the measures taken on board, thank you very much for this. Without exception, Staff were fantastic and our every need was attended to. The additional Covid testing ran smoothly, organised by our Riviera Reps. The guided tours were most interesting: the guides very knowledgeable and more importantly, interesting to listen to. We loved this trip and would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you again Riviera, you were FAB!

Second escorted tour with this...

Second escorted tour with this company. Did 5 days in Iceland tour. Everything went smoothly, excellent tour guide, Per. Extremely knowledgeable and interesting guy. Very friendly too. Highly recommend. Just let down by the room given at the hotel, but I guess the travel company doesn't have control over this.

Riviera South Africa tour - awesome

Riviera have amazing holidays and tours to choose from. The one we chose was South Africa and wow! It turned out to be our best trip ever - incredible memories we will never forget. We’ve been all over the world which was because of all our experiences, this one was awesome. The organisation of the holiday, the guide and the travel was e cells that. The choice of hotels, meals, restaurants, trips was absolutely fantastic - very good quality and character - nothing bland or boring! The Riviera guide was permanently with us along with a South Africa guide and they were both extremely friendly, professional, informative and you could ask any questions you want! I would massively recommend this holiday/trip and when you’ve experienced it, you realise how reasonable the price is. We reflect on this trip a lot and thank you Riviera for giving us such a wonderful experience.

Rhine Christmas markets cruise

Just completed a 5 day trip on the Rhine. Our first river cruise and a tester for future cruises. The boat was well appointed and the cabin and public areas were spotlessly clean. The staff were attentive and contributed to the very relaxed atmosphere on the boat. The quality of the food surpassed that which we have experiened on sea cruises in recent years. I have written little because it was a faultless experience. We have booked a further cruise (in France) on the basis of our experience.

My first cruise and I...

My first cruise and I couldn’t have done better than my recent Seine River cruise. Carmen the tour organiser was excellent and always willing to go the extra mile to sort out any problems. The crew were amazing , friendly and helpful, the captain was great when explaining the controls on the bridge. Everything was very clean, food truly delicious and the pianist a delight and I was able to indulge my passion for dancing. My fellow guests were a delight and I made many new friends. Thank you Riviera

Although most people seem to...

Although most people seem to book and pay for their holidays online, because we live close by we prefer to make a personal visit. In my opinion if they are offering this as an option they should be better equipped to accommodate visits in person. We have not been on our river cruise yet, so can't comment on that yet.

My 3rd Riviera trip within...

My 3rd Riviera trip within a year and I wasn't disappointed 😁 This time it was https://www.rivieratravel.co.uk/escorted-tours/southern-india-coastal-route-solo-travellers This trip, although not cheap, it really offers exceptional value for money as you see a lot of Tamil Nadu and Kerela, stay in fantastic hotels, excellent breakfasts every day as well as some lunches and dinners also included. George Bareham, our "Tour Manager" was brilliant, very professional, but also friendly and diligent. Satheeshan, our local guide was helpful and picked me up antibiotics when I got ill, he was a nice chap, if (for my taste) went on a bit and used 20 words when 1 would suffice. Mr Sweeny, our coach driver was fantastic, really professional and an exceptionally good driver. His assistant, Murgon wad a delight, always smiling and attentive. This is a full on trip, early morning starts and quite a packed itinerary, but still leaving time to laze around some brilliant hotel swimming pools. Only a couple of suggestions to improve the holiday. More shopping time in Cochin and change carriers from Etihad who, unfortunately aren't the excellent airline they used to be. But, will I use Riviera Travel again - Yes 😁

Presently in Croatia staying at...

Presently in Croatia staying at Arauana Hotel, supposedly a 4 star property, but wouldn't give it any star rating. Rooms are small and dirty. Wallpaper blistering. Meals served in a shed like lean-to. Food like warm, greasy and always self service. Second holiday with Riviera this year and neither at standard advertised. Have travelled with them previously and everything was fine, but standards have really dropped. Have booked a holiday with them next year and now dreading it. Certainly don't provide the standard advertised. We have never stayed in such a hovel and have visited youngsters in back packers accommodation which was far better than this supposedly 4 star accommodation. There are no indoor bars or lounges only a shed as a so called restaurant. Absolutely disgusting. Won't be boking with them again

The country is developing a reputation as one of the top ecotourism destinations in the world, which is one of the reasons we wanted to visit. It’s the perfect place for adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts like ourselves.

Why Is Costa Rica Worth Visiting

What more can I say other than Costa Rica was lovely ? It was a warm and welcoming country from the moment we arrived, apart from the grumpy old coach driver who took us from the border to our first stop in Puerto Viejo. But, by the end of the journey, we had made friends.

We spent about 3 weeks in Costa Rica towards the end of our backpacking trip, opting to end the trip in Nicaragua. A big mistake; we wish we had stayed in Costa Rica! However, we did go back to the country, and it was an idyllic place to end our trip.

Scarlet-Macaws

The country is diverse depending on where you intend to visit, if it’s your first time in Costa Rica check out our guide on the best places to visit here. It can feel like you’re on a tropical island, especially in the likes of Puerto Viejo, or lost to the world in the cloud forests of the mountains.

The Perfect Place…But For Who?

It’s the perfect place for those seeking adventure, outdoor sports and nature activities. The country is known for its beauty and the scenery didn’t disappoint, nor did the abundance of wildlife. The popular La Fortuna is a great place to head if you want to test your thrill-seeking boundaries, while the peaceful small town of Orosi is great for a laid-back mountain retreat.

The boho-casual vibes from the small beach towns on the Nicoya Peninsular also attract many visitors, while resort spots like Jaco are perfect for lazy beach days and a spot of surfing . The country has numerous national parks but Manual Antonio is often rated as one of the most beautiful in the world!

❤️ Who Will Love Costa Rica? Anyone who is interested in wildlife and nature, outdoor adventure, and sports such as white water rafting, waterfalls, and hiking will relish a holiday in Costa Rica. That said, even those of you who want to laze around the beach all day have ample opportunity to do so. There are plenty of resorts and 5* hotels offering just that!

IS COSTA RICA WORTH VISITING?

Best pros about costa rica.

Since we’re all agreeing (I hope) that Costa Rica is worth visiting, let’s go over the reasons for visiting in more depth. The best things to do in Costa Rica are what we think are the ultimate reasons for visiting.

1. National Parks

Costa Rica boasts an impressive number of national parks, each with its own unique charm and biodiversity. If you’re someone who enjoys nature, then these parks are a massive draw to visiting the country.

Protected Tropical Beaches

The most popular are Manuel Antonio National Park , Monteverde’s Cloud Forest and the breathtaking Arenal Volcano National Park , but there are many, many more. Visiting these nature spots is a dream for hiking enthusiasts, birdwatchers and wildlife spotting.

⭐ Pro tip >> For the ultimate tour including all three national parks: 3 Days Costa Rica: Arenal Volcano- Monteverde -Manuel Antonio From San José

2. Wildlife

One of the top destinations for nature lovers, Costa Rica is home to an array of incredible wildlife. The country boasts some of the highest biodiversity in the world. From howler monkeys to toucans, sloths to jaguars, sea turtles and an abundance of colourful birds, there’s no shortage of wildlife to discover.

Sloths in Costa Rica

It doesn’t matter if you’re exploring the national parks or simply relaxing on a beach, you’re bound to come across some of the country’s fascinating and unique wildlife.

⭐ Pro tip >> One of the biggest reasons people visit Costa Rica is for the wildlife. Head out on a bird-watching tour to fully appreciate Costa Rica’s biodiversity; visit wildlife rescue centres and butterfly gardens on your wildlife search, too!

So, if you’re looking for a chance to get up close and personal with some of the world’s most incredible creatures, Costa Rica is the place to be!

3. Volcanoes

The country is home to a number of active and dormant volcanoes, making it a popular destination for volcano enthusiasts, or those of you that love a good view! The country’s volcanoes offer unbeatable opportunities for adventure, including hiking, hot springs, and even zip lining.

Is-Costa-Rica-Worth-Visiting-volcanoes-costa-rica

The Arenal Volcano , near La Fortuna , is a must-visit destination if you’re seeking an adventure experience while Poas Volcano , on the other hand, offers breathtaking panoramic views of its crater lake and surrounding national park.

4. Hot Springs

If a country has volcanoes you can bet it’s got some outstanding natural hot springs! Costa Rica is famous for its natural hot springs , which are heated by the country’s volcanoes.

The hot springs are believed to have therapeutic properties and are a popular activity if you’re seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. The hot springs come in various forms, ranging from luxurious resorts with man-made pools to hidden jungle gems that are accessible only by foot.

Orosi-Costa-Rica-Haceinda-Orosi.

Most of the hot springs are located in stunning natural settings and offer the chance to unwind amidst the country’s stunning scenery. Make sure you visit a natural hot spring rather than one that has been man-made, as we don’t think these are as good!

The beaches in Costa Rica are stunning and some of our all-time favourites! Due to the country’s location between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, you’ll get a diverse range of beaches and sand colours from white to black.

Best-places-to-visit-in-costa-rica-Samara

They are known for their tropical natural beauty, with crystal clear waters, soft fluffy sands, and lush greenery. So, even if you’re not a nature lover you can still enjoy whiling away your days on the beach.

And since there’s a beach to cater to all kinds of travellers, from adventure seekers to those looking for a tranquil escape, finding a more secluded getaway, is totally possible. My suggestion, head to the pristine beaches of the Nicoya Peninsula, there are plenty of hidden gems to discover!

Costa Rica is a surfer’s paradise, offering some of the best waves in the world. With its long coastline and consistent swells, the country sees surfers of all levels flocking to the country.

⭐ Pro tip >> Some of the most popular surf spots in Costa Rica include Tamarindo , Playa Grande , Jaco, and Santa Teresa . These beaches have a range of breaks, from gentle waves for beginners to more challenging reef breaks for experienced surfers.

Jack learning to surf.

There are many surf schools and camps available throughout the country, making it easy if you want to learn to surf or improve your skills. With warm water temperatures year-round and a laid-back surf culture, Costa Rica is well worth visiting for surf enthusiasts.

7. Mountains

The mountains offer breathtaking landscapes and incredible opportunities for outdoor activities . The highlands are covered in lush rainforests and cloud forests, with plenty of trails for hiking and adventure sports.

The mountains are also home to several active volcanoes, including Arenal and Poás, which offer unique experiences for visitors, such as hiking on lava trails and viewing volcanic craters.

Orosi-Costa-Rica-Orosi-Valley

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, located in the Tilarán Mountains, is a popular destination for birdwatchers and nature lovers. The stunning views from the mountains, along with the fresh mountain air, make for an unforgettable experience in Costa Rica.

8. Coffee & Chocolate

If you’re a coffee lover you would have heard of Costa Rica Coffee. The country’s well known for producing some of the world’s finest coffee. They are also big on chocolate, and a visit to the country wouldn’t be complete without a Coffee & Chocolate tour!

The tours offer a great opportunity to learn about the coffee-making process and sample some delicious brews. See the different stages of coffee production, from the planting of the coffee beans to the roasting and packaging.

One of the best things to do in Costa Rica is visit the coffee plantations.

Coffee plantations are mainly located in the Central Valley, where the climate and volcanic soil provide ideal growing conditions. One place we loved was Orosi, check out the guide here.

You can also learn about the history of coffee in Costa Rica and the cultural importance of coffee to the country. And of course, you can taste some of the best coffee in the world and even buy some to take home.

9. Indigenous Tribes

Costa Rica is home to several indigenous tribes, including the Bribri, Cabécar, Maleku , Ngöbe, and Teribe, among others. These tribes have lived in Costa Rica for centuries and have their own unique cultures, traditions, and languages.

Coconut-Palm-Trees-in-Costa-Rica

A visit to their communities offers a chance to learn about their way of life and experience their rich cultural heritage. Some indigenous communities offer guided tours, where visitors can learn about traditional medicine, handicrafts, and farming practices.

It’s important to respect their customs and traditions and to seek permission before taking photographs or filming. By visiting these communities, you can support their efforts to preserve their culture and way of life.

10. Friendly Locals

Costa Ricans, also known as Ticos, are known for their kindness and welcoming nature. From the moment we arrived in the country, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality.

Ticos are proud of their country and are eager to share their culture and traditions with you. This friendly atmosphere makes Costa Rica a great place to visit.

Even on cloudy days the beautiful beaches in Costa Rica make it worth visiting!

All in all, Costa Rica is worth visiting if you value cultural experiences, unique ecosystems, natural beauty, wildlife, tropical destinations and interactions with locals.

Why Costa Rica Might Not Be Worth Visiting

While Costa Rica is a beautiful and exciting destination for some, it might not be worth visiting for others. The most important reason worth mentioning, for us anyway, is that it’s not a cheap destination .

Additionally, those who of you are not interested in outdoor adventures and nature activities might not find the country appealing. If you’re looking for a more urban and modern vacation, Costa Rica might not be the right place for you either.

Walking along the road in Costa Rica

Who Won’t Love Costa Rica? In truth, I don’t think those of you who are looking for a budget-friendly trip should consider Costa Rica. The country can be inexpensive in certain respects, but ultimately, there are many other destinations which are considerably more affordable, Thailand for one.

Reasons Costa Rica Might Not Be Worth Visiting

Let’s dive a little deeper into reasons Costa Rica might not be worth visiting.

11. Rainy Season

The rainy season in Costa Rica, also known as the “green season,” is a factor to consider when planning your trip. It typically runs from May to November , with the heaviest rainfall occurring in September and October.

While some of you will appreciate the lush green landscapes and smaller crowds the rains bring, the rest of you might find the frequent rain and potential for flooding to be a reason for not visiting.

Even cloudy skies won't keep us away from the beach in Costa Rica!

Outdoor activities such as hiking and exploring national parks may be limited or cancelled due to weather conditions, beach days can be ruined and road travel may become more difficult.

12. Lots Of Insects

While most people visit Costa Rica to experience the diverse ecosystem, some of you may be deterred by the possibility of encountering unfamiliar and potentially intimidating creepy crawlies.

riviera travel costa rica reviews

Since Costa Rica is home to an abundance of wildlife, you’re bound to come across snakes, spiders, and various insects. If you’re not a fan, this can be a reason for staying away!

However, it’s important to note that these animals generally pose no threat to humans and are an essential part of the country’s rich biodiversity.

13. Rugged Terrain

The terrain can be challenging, particularly for those of you who have difficulty with uneven or steep terrain. The country is known for its mountainous landscape, with many areas accessible only by foot or on horseback.

The numerous volcanoes and steep hills can make driving and hiking difficult too, so unless you’re planning to stay in one location you might want to reconsider visiting.

Orosi-Costa-Rica-Orosi-Valley- rugged-terrain

Something else to keep in mind, some areas can be prone to landslides and flooding during heavy rain, which can further complicate travel.

14. It’s Expensive

I’ve noticed some people saying that Costa Rica can be affordable, well these people are not budget backpackers. Jack and I travelled around Southeast Asia, South America and Central America on a tight budget. Costa Rica, Panama and Hawaii were by far the most expensive countries of them all.

We had a separate budget for Hawaii – that’s another ball game!

Let Me Just Say: It’s true that there are certain ways of saving money and being budget savvy but that doesn’t mean the country is budget-friendly. If you plan on staying in one location you can save money , if you plan on taking local transport everywhere you can save money, if you only eat at local restaurants and stay in hostels, you can save money. But, Costa Rica still going to be more expensive than countries like Indonesia , for example, which is a budget-friendly destination.

As for Costa Rica, It’s likely you’ll end up spending a lot of money on transportation, accommodation, and activities than anticipated. The cost of food and tours can also add up quickly and after a little digging, we found there were usually numerous hidden costs.

The-food-is-best-reasons-to-visit-Costa-Rica-

Additionally, some areas of the country, such as the popular beach towns, like Santa Teresa, can be quite expensive, especially during peak travel seasons. So, if you’re a budget-conscious traveller, it may be worth considering alternative destinations with lower costs.

15. It’s Widespread

While the distance between attractions and the widespread nature of the country can be a draw for some, it can also be a deterrent for others. With limited time and resources, you might not want to spend hours travelling from one destination to the next.

A bridge is Costa Rica's Orosi Valley,

Costa Rica’s mountainous terrain and winding roads can make for slow and potentially uncomfortable journeys, especially for those prone to motion sickness. Even the locals end up being sick on the longer mountain journeys!

Ecotourism In Costa Rica

What Is Ecotourism? Ecotourism focuses on promoting responsible travel to natural areas while conserving the environment and improving the well-being of local communities. It aims to minimise the negative impact of tourism on the environment and maximise the positive impact on the local communities by encouraging tourists to engage in activities that promote conservation, education, and sustainability.

Costa Rica is known as a leader in ecotourism due to its commitment to sustainability and conservation . The country is home to a diverse range of ecosystems, including rainforests, beaches, volcanoes, and national parks, which attract millions of tourists each year.

Negatives Impacts Of Tourism On Costa Rica

There are always negatives to tourism as well and although ecotourism has brought many benefits to Costa Rica, tourism has also had negative impacts on the environment and local communities.

❌ These negative impacts include environmental degradation, where the increase in tourism has put pressure on the country’s natural resources, leading to deforestation, pollution, and habitat destruction.

❌ One major concern is the displacement of local communities as tourism infrastructure expands, and the overuse of natural resources such as water and energy for tourism activities. This has led to their depletion, putting a strain on the environment and local communities.

❌ Income inequality , where the benefits of tourism have not been distributed equally and cultural erosion. The influx of tourists and the development of tourism infrastructure have led to the loss of cultures and traditional ways of life.

Efforts are being made to mitigate these impacts and promote sustainable tourism in Costa Rica, including policies to protect the environment, support community-based tourism initiatives, and encourage responsible tourism practices.

These include creating protected areas to conserve biodiversity, promoting sustainable tourism, implementing environmental regulations such as limits on water use and restrictions on waste disposal, providing support for community development, and encouraging responsible tourism practices.

These measures aim to promote sustainable tourism in Costa Rica while ensuring that the environment and local communities benefit from tourism’s economic advantages.

Cartago

By balancing economic growth with environmental conservation and social responsibility, the government of Costa Rica aims to maintain the country’s reputation as a leader in ecotourism.

What Is Responsible Tourism? Sustainable and socially responsible tourism activities that aim to minimise negative impacts on the environment and local communities. These practices include reducing waste, conserving water and energy, supporting local businesses, respecting local cultures and customs, and minimising environmental impacts.

Is Costa Rica Good For Tourists?

We believe Costa Rica is good for tourists . The country is considered a safe destination in Central America with many nature-based activities to enjoy. It’s a superb place to travel solo or with family as the country is host to an endless number of wildlife tours, adrenaline-filled adventures, and water-based activities.

It’s literally got something for everyone but it’s certainly more suited to those of you who enjoy nature, rainforests and tropical beaches.

Visiting waterfalls in Costa Rica is worth it!

What Is So Special About Costa Rica?

As you can tell by now, we really enjoyed our time in Costa Rica, even if it was expensive. It’s a mesmerising country which offers a lot in terms of nature and natural beauty.

We found the local communities in the quieter areas such as Orosi, which is still new to tourism, extremely friendly. This is always a bonus when visiting a country, especially when there is a language barrier.

Although we didn’t have as much interaction with locals in the busier areas we still felt safe and welcome. The country felt open and warm with few restrictions to those exploring by foot. Although there are plenty of nature trails, it seems you can go almost anywhere, safely, and no one will tell you otherwise.

Costa-Rica-for-first-time-Playa-Negra

The stunning landscapes and vistas are second to none with plenty of new places to discover if you want to get away from the crowds. Wildlife, from birds to sea turtles , is in abundance in Costa Rica and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved with local volunteer groups and organisations.

For us, Costa Rica was a place of serenity and tranquillity. There was a touch of midnight madness, especially in the party town of Jaco and the vibrant Caribbean flair of Puerto Viejo, but even there, we still enjoyed beach days and animal sanctuaries.

⭐ Pro tip >> You cannot escape Mother Nature, and that is what’s so special about Costa Rica. Make sure to take it all in and enjoy the natural beauty.

Is Costa Rica worth visiting? For peace and tranquility, i think so!

How Many Days In Costa Rica Is Enough?

How many days you spend in Costa Rica depends entirely on your travel style and budget. There are some questions you should think about before booking your trip which will determine how many days are enough.

Are you planning on visiting different towns ? You’ll need to select the ones you love! Do you want to visit both sides of the country ? The Caribbean or the Pacific…or both. Do you want to see sea turtles ? Tortuguero is a good place to visit, but far away. Will you be visiting National Parks ? There are plenty, you’ll have to choose your favourites! Do you want to do adventure activities ? Head to La Fortuna. Do you want to visit the beach ? Tropical paradise at your fingertips.

Ultimately, if you’ve answered yes to the above and want to include all the above in your itinerary you are going to need around 3 weeks in Costa Rica . If you skip the Caribbean Coast you can get away with 2 weeks.

Endless nature...boulder, trees and greenery

Is It Worth Visiting Costa Rica For A Week?

In my opinion, and unless you’re visiting Costa Rica for a specific purpose I don’t think a week is worth it . You’ll miss out on many amazing locations and experiences because you won’t be able to fit it all in over a week.

One thing you need to consider is how widespread the country is , even though it’s small. It takes a while to reach popular locations. For example, it took us 12 hours to get from San Jose to La Fortuna, because the roads are so winding.

Therefore, unless you’re staying in one place you’ll lose a few days travelling. In reality, Costa Rica’s points of interest can not all be seen from one place. So, to experience the best of Costa Rica, you will need to move around.

✔️ Logistically, a week in Costa Rica is just not feasible if you want to experience all the highlights of the country.

Catch local buses to get around Costa Rica. Don't miss the bus stop in Puerto Viejo!

Is It Worth Visiting Costa Rica For 4 Days?

Definitely not! Unless you’re passing through the country as a budget backpacker or on a stopover trip, 4 days are not enough time in Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a country that requires at least 2 weeks to absorb its beauty.

Remember, Costa Rica is a country, not a city and so if you’re looking for a 4-day holiday you could consider a city break or a nearby beach getaway to your home country.

Is-Costa-Rica-Worth-Visiting-Sunsets

For us, being in the UK, we could hop over to Europe and enjoy the bustling city of romance that is Paris , or enjoy a few lazy days in Ibiza. Travelling within the UK would also be a better option, choosing to explore a city or region, such as the Cotswolds , rather than trying to fit in a whole country.

How To Get To Costa Rica

The chances are you’ll be flying into Costa Rica from another country. If this is the case, it’s worth noting that San Jose is the capital and has an international airport. Many countries now fly directly into San Jose, although many airlines still use the USA as a transfer point.

If you’re already in the USA or another country in Central America, it’s also possible to drive to Costa Rica. This can be a fun and fulfilling experience and something we would love to do; road trip, anyone?

It is possible to fly directly from the UK to Costa Rica (and vice versa). We flew home to London from San Jose, Costa Rica’s international airport on a direct flight. It took us about 12 hours to get to London Heathrow, but flight times can vary. The average cost is between £400 and £600 economy class.

Flight Tours

Best Flight Searcher: SKYSCANNER

We use SKYSCANNER to book and compare flights. Book your flight tickets in advance and you should be able to find great deals ! ✅ Top Tip: Air Asia is a good airline for internal Indonesian flights.

With that in mind, it’s also possible to catch local buses and coaches throughout Central America. We caught several buses all around Panama , Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

It’s possible to reach the States by bus from Costa Rica; this is a great way to absorb the local culture and way of life, although it will take a while!

Getting Around

Since we were backpacking across Costa Rica, we chose to use public transport as much as possible. However, if you’re not backpacking, or if your budget permits, I would suggest getting a rental car.

The country is highly diverse, and the best way to experience it would be at your own pace and stopping by different locations. This is easiest if you have your own car!

✔️Coaches & Buses

You’ll use coaches for longer journeys, and buses will serve the shorter trips . They are generally quite comfortable and well-maintained with large spacious seats.

HAVE YOU HEARD OF 12GO?

A great company to use to get around Indonesia is 12Go . They aim to help travellers from around the world get from point A to point B trouble-free and with a high-quality service guarantee ! So, if you’re coming from other areas in Indo, you might want to use these guys!

We managed to get around the country without pre-booking any coaches, although I wouldn’t suggest this. We travelled at low season and even then had to stand a few times!

Nevertheless, we felt that there was a good transportation network serving the more popular tourist destinations and even those less frequented.

However, for these journeys, you will find yourself on the local buses, on which you may need multiple transfers to reach your destination – just as you would at home!

⭐ Pro tip >> If you’re travelling from one coast to the other it’s likely you will transit through San Jose. It’s worth noting that San Jose has multiple bus terminals allocated for different destinations. So it’s likely you’ll need to change terminals if you’re transiting through. If this is the case, the easiest way to navigate is to jump in a taxi.

We found the taxis to be relatively affordable although we didn’t catch them often. There is Uber in San Jose and Jaco , and possibly some of the larger towns however they are not all over the country.

That said, from our experience, the local taxis are fine and reliable . You might need to negotiate the price and make sure it’s agreed before you get in the taxi . Some run on meters but not all, and sometimes the meters don’t work.

If you’re unsure ask your hotel for an estimated cost so you have an idea of what you should be paying. It’s also worth noting that booking a taxi through the hotel can sometimes be more expensive than arranging your own.

✔️Rental Cars

As mentioned above, renting a car and travelling around Costa Rica would be our preference. The country is breathtaking and if you have your own means to explore then do so. If we ever go back to Costa Rica we’re renting a car!

We met people renting cars and they were talking about the freedom they had and the more remote places they were able to visit just because they had a car.

It means you won’t be locked into taking tours to visit certain areas and you will be able to explore a lot more or the country in a shorter amount of time. Thumbs up for car rentals in Costa Rica!

road trip and car rentals

👉 Car Rental: DISCOVER CARS

We use DISCOVER CARS when looking for an overseas car rental. They compare hundreds of dealerships and have zero hidden charges.

The best way to get around the local area is by foot. Once you reach your destination, don’t be afraid of exploring. Costa Rica is considered a safe place and there are so many unique and interesting places to find if you explore a little.

That said, it’s not wise to walk to unknown areas alone and don’t wander alone after dark, as this could be dangerous.

Is Costa Rica Cheap Or Expensive?

In our opinion, Costa Rica is an expensive destination for budget travellers due to several factors, as noted below.

I’ve put together two example tables to show some of our typical costs while we were travelling around Costa Rica. The mid-range includes some alcoholic beverages and eating out all day plus an excursion, but these are base rates, remember, the sky’s the limit!

👉 It’s important to note that we were budget-travelling, staying in hostels and using local transport, and were not doing tours. This was the last destination on our world trip and so, as expected, the budget was almost all but gone. Sigh.

How Much Money Do You Need For 2 Weeks In Costa Rica?

Why Is Costa Rica Expensive?

Firstly, the country uses the US dollar , which can result in higher prices for goods and services compared to other countries in the region.

In addition, Costa Rica has relatively high labour costs and strict labour laws, which can also drive up prices for products and services.

Another reason for the high cost of living in Costa Rica is the country’s good economy and political stability . While these factors contribute to the country’s overall prosperity and quality of life, they also result in higher prices for you and me!

Orosi-Chruch

Something else to think about is that Costa Rica has a strong focus on sustainable and responsible tourism , which often means that accommodations and tours are more expensive than in other destinations.

However, this also means that visitors can enjoy the country’s natural beauty without harming the environment or local communities.

Is Costa Rica Worth Visiting FAQs

The best time to visit Costa Rica is around February if you want dry, sunny weather perfect for beach days. The New Year and Christmas time is perfect for visiting the rainforests but it is the busiest.  The most popular time to visit Costa Rica is just after the rain and into the dry season between December and March, this is when the country has the least amount of rain. December is most favoured, especially in the northwest as the forests still remain lush, it’s also a great time to see migrating wildlife. However, if you’re looking for better prices and fewer tourists then July and August are perfect.

In our opinion, Costa Rica is a safe place. We felt safe during our time there and fortunately, we didn’t have any incidents involving crime. However, that’s not to say that it doesn’t happen. The most common type of crime in Costa Rica is petty theft which happens mainly on beaches and on bus journeys. Therefore, you should always remain vigilant and keep an eye on your surrounding.  You should always practice safe travelling. This includes but is not limited to, not walking alone at night, not becoming too intoxicated, not flaunting cash or expensive jewellery and always being aware of your surrounding. You should always practice safe travelling no matter where you are

Yes, Costa Rica does have all-inclusive resorts that offer a wide range of amenities and activities. These resorts are typically located in popular tourist destinations such as Guanacaste, Papagayo, and the Nicoya Peninsula.  However, it’s worth noting that all-inclusive resorts are not as common in Costa Rica as they are in some other countries, as the country tends to prioritise sustainable and responsible tourism practices over mass tourism development.

Conclusion: Is Costa Rica Worth Visiting?

Overall, in our opinion, Costa Rica is worth visiting . It’s an extraordinary country that is very beautiful, green, and clean. In all honesty, we were not expecting it to be as clean as we saw. We were under the false impression that it was an impoverished country, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

It’s true that in certain areas, the country does need additional support to develop but overall, we saw a thriving economy and content community. Even in those areas less frequented by tourists, such as Orosi, the community there appeared to be doing well.

The effects of tourism on any country can be detrimental to the environment and local community, but it seems that the Costa Rican government has taken ecotourism seriously and is taking the right steps in promoting sustainable tourism over mass development.

This means that Costa Rica is the perfect escape for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, beach dwellers and adventure seekers. It’s a fun and exciting country to visit offering a beautiful backdrop with a clean, green and environmental focus at its core.

Pura Vida, everyone!

Costa Rica: 9 reasons to try an Intrepid tour for your next adventure holiday

Explore beyond the "Pura Vida" lifestyle

group holiday costa rica intrepid travel review

Morning mist hits my face as I step onto my balcony. The rainforest around me is waking up. Thick air hums with the melodies of exotic birds. I hear leaves rustling, insects chirping, and water flowing. I feel an overwhelming sense of calm rush over me; okay, this is it - I’m not leaving, I've found my nirvana.

So, imagine my delight when Intrepid invited me to try their tour of Costa Rica. If you're not familiar, they are a travel tour company that organises trips globally. This particular trip included their 10 new Indigenous community-based tourism offerings, alongside natural wonders, wildlife and a taste of the "Pura Vida" lifestyle. Meaning I could cover the very best of the country within a short time, without having to plan a thing myself. Result!

intrepid tour of costa rica

So, three years on from that ill-fated trip, I set off on a journey to discover the lush rainforests, winding waterways, and palm-fringed beaches, and to learn about the local communities that make this country so fascinating.

Never considered a group trip before? Here’s why you absolutely should.

The unique experiences

This trip was an endless combination of pinch-me moments, from searching for sloths, swimming in crystal blue seas to sitting in volcanic hot springs. However, as well as hitting all the tourist hot spots, it allowed me to have unique experiences that would have been harder to organise on my own.

On day 2, we left the comforting chaos of San Jose to drive to the Highlands. Out the window, buildings melted away and were replaced with emerald leaves snaking back as far as the eye could see. The air became thicker, and cooled as we ascended and arrived at our destination.

Tierra Amiga in San Marcos de Tarrazú is an ecological farm where coffee is produced organically, from seed to cup. We were greeted by Luciana, who owns the farm with her family. She had the kind of infectious energy that proved so contagious that I was able to leave my jet lag behind. Wielding a machete with strength and precision (she repeatedly said she had no need for a gym), she told us how they harvest and grow coffee and other vegetables in the traditional way.

After drinking coffee (from beans we roasted over an open fire), we sat down to a delicious meal made of food grown and produced entirely on this farm, including sweet syrupy kombucha. You can’t get more organic than that.

jars of kombucha

The opportunity to engage with indigenous communities

If coffee is not your warm beverage of choice, don’t worry, next, we headed to Térraba community, where we experienced the importance of the cacao plant and chocolate harvesting within their culture. The Térraba/Bröran people are an Indigenous community with a vibrant legacy. Situated on about 34.7 square miles (9,000 hectares) along the Térraba River, they have sustained themselves from the land for over 500 years. The community identifies as Matriarchal, where women serve as the educators, entrusted with sharing knowledge across generations.

Once the beans were roasted, emitting the most heavily of scents, they were ground by hand with large stones. The chocolate drink was rich and fragrant, traditionally enjoyed without sugar. Next, they showed us how to carve wooden masks by hand. These beautiful masks are used in local festivals such as the Danza del Toro y la Mula (Dance of the Bull and the Mule). They are now also sold to tourists, so they can invest money back into their communities.

It’s a more sustainable way to travel

I have been recently wondering about how I can be more conscious when I’m on holiday, and it seems I’m not alone. A report by Euromonitor International revealed that despite the cost of living crisis, nearly 80% of travellers will happily pay more for sustainable travel features. While Expedia Group Media Solutions found travellers are being more mindful by visiting local cultural spots and choosing greener transport choices. Although 70% reported still feeling overwhelmed about how to be sustainable while away.

Here's where advice from the pros becomes crucial. Intrepid , in particular, stands out as a top player in this arena. They are committed to “making a real difference – by investing in local communities, human rights initiatives, wildlife conservation projects and the environment” and they’ve recently received a B-corp certification - again.

Although the flight cannot be seen as sustainable, once you get to the country Costa Rica is well known as an eco-tourism leader in Central America, and these considerations are baked into how the trip is designed. The use of tour buses over private transport or internal flights, the inclusion of local tour guides and indigenous communities in decision-making - down to the discouragement of single-use plastic by having a tank of drinking water available on the bus.

intrepid tour of costa rica

Benefit from local knowledge

Our tour guide, Luis, was on board to answer any questions we had about Costa Rica (no matter how obscure) and to teach us Spanish phrases each day. "Pura Vida" (pure life) is the most important one, meaning anything from hello and goodbye to everything being great, as well as the response to any minor discomfort.

Having a local guide who knows the route inside out is invaluable, not only for learning more about where you are but also for those little things like finding a nearby pharmacy or knowing when to expect the best weather. Plus, planning a trip to a new place can feel like a job in itself, so why not leave it to the experts?

It fits into annual leave

The premium Costa Rica tour lasts 9 days and visits 4 areas, allowing you to get a great flavour of the country within annual leave constraints. Although, I would definitely recommend tagging a few days on to the end of the trip if you can. I was not ready to leave!

a view of a sea and trees

You won't be backpacking

While I absolutely adored hostel hopping around Thailand in my 20s, at 32, my tolerance for roughing it is much lower. The hotels on this tour are premium, featuring a balcony view overlooking the rainforest, on-site spas, king-sized beds, and luxury sheets for a good night's rest ahead of a day of adventure.

The transport for the trip is a private tour bus for a group of 12-16, so while it's not a personal chauffeur, it's definitely not a typical Euro coach trip. Remember, though, that it's still a tropical destination, so wildlife and bugs are to be expected. I made friends with a particularly beautiful green iguana.

It's an active holiday

As a Women’s Health reader, we know you enjoy a healthy balance of movement and rest. Intrepid’s itinerary delivers on that front.

We took our binoculars for a nature walk in Manuel Antonio National Park, while our guide pointed out birds and other wildlife like a resident David Attenborough. This was followed by a swim in the clearest blue sea I’ve seen!

Want to make use of your walking boots ? We enjoyed a hike around the lake in Arenal Volcano 1968 Park. The trail took us through the dwarf cloud forests, along the inside of the crater, ending with breathtaking views of the park below.

tour group at arenal 1968 park

There is still time for R and R

While I personally enjoyed many bus naps, I utilised the free time one afternoon to explore the delights of the Hotel Lomas del Volcán spa. Nestled right in the centre of the rainforest, there was zero need for the ambiance to be set. I chose to try some treatments made out of locally sourced ingredients. First, I was exfoliated with Costa Rican coffee scrub, covered from the neck down with volcanic mud, and then massaged. It was bliss.

It is also worth mentioning: the Ecotermales in La Fortuna, these hot springs were the perfect way to unwind and soothe sore muscles post hike.

You don’t have to wait for someone else to go with

Once we reach a certain age, life becomes more hectic and it can be harder to coordinate calendars for a dinner, let alone a big trip. So, if you want to go somewhere, why wait?

You can join an Intrepid tour from age 15, but the average age is 44, plus you can always ask Intrepid who’s booked on your trip if you’re concerned. In my opinion it’s the perfect way to do solo travel, my group felt like a family by the end of the week.

Verdict - is it for you?

If your idea of a holiday is laying horizontal and not leaving a hotel (no judgment here), then it’s very much not. If you want to explore authentic local experiences, learn about different cultures, immerse yourself in nature - all within a period covered by annual leave - then this is the trip for you. While, there is free time (which I utilised for the aforementioned spa treatments), this itinerary is about making the most of your time in the country. You’ll see all the main sites, plus some beautiful local moments that would not been possible on other tours.

Editor’s Take

What to look for in Costa Rica Tour Reviews

Most trip reviews tend to focus on some or all of these 5 key areas, not all of which may be relevant to you: the tour guide, travel company, service level, country or countries traveled in, and the trip itinerary.

Remember, just because you see a 1 star review doesn’t necessarily mean that person disliked the country.

Nature tours are a huge part of traveling in Costa Rica and most reviewers reflect positively on these experiences. Reviews especially highlight the benefit of having a knowledgeable expert tour guide to help describe the many different species and point out particularly well camouflaged wildlife.

In addition, tours of Costa Rica usually have a strong focus on responsible and sustainable travel, often incorporating assisting with various wildlife initiatives into their itineraries.

That said, some negative Costa Rica tour reviews warn that it felt like the tour company had presented false information regarding responsible travel. Depending on your personal views, you may or may not agree, so be sure to read these reviews carefully.

Service level varies quite a bit when traveling in Costa Rica. Luxury eco lodges aside, for the most part you should expect to face some different levels of comfort than you may be used to at home. Travelers who may have been expecting a higher level of service, and no bugs, will have been in for a rude surprise, and this is another thing that could account for poor ratings.

Most travelers reviewing Costa Rica seem to have enjoyed their trip itinerary . Costa Rica is fairly small, so it’s easy to see a lot of the major sites, meet locals, and even have some free time to spend on the beach.

Couple of teething problems we had,I will be reporting with recommendations on how to rectify.

I've travelled with them but only once. The information and tickets etc didn't come until just before leaving which was disconcerting as other companies tend to send them earlier.

The trip and accommodation was good but the guides tended to add places they got commission including passing round info on certain jewellery/shoes on laminated sheets during the journey under the guise of 'information' but was essentially to encourage us to buy. It was all very obvious. We also aquired 2 guides half way around and tips for both was expected though they were not that involved with their customers including me being told I should have listened when I asked for something to be repeated. I understand that there are better guides and we just were unfortunate.

On the whole it was a good trip that delivered what it said but afterwards I got a lot of cold calls from related companies about buying wine/newspaper subscriptions etc for the next two years even though I'm always concious of asking for my name and number not to be shared.

Would I book with them again? If I couldn't find a better company or itinerary or price then yes. It was well organised.

I have used this company for an Italian vacationi and found it to be excellent Reasonably priced, excellent guides and I would certainly travel again with them My sister travelled to South Africa with this company and again found it to be an excellent experience.

By “report” do you mean review? TripAdvisor doesn’t list package holidays or Travel Agencies for us to review like we would review a hotel or a cafe or a museum etc. You can write reviews of each hotel you stayed in, or some tourist attractions you visited while in Japan. Search for each one by using the magnifying glass icon at the top right side of any page, type in its exact name and city to find it. Then you can scroll down and click the green Write a Review button.

You can also write a Trip Report or Just Back Report on your travel experiences in Japan by posting it on the Japan travel forum, or on a Japanese city forum, eg. If you spent lots of time in Kyoto or another Japanese city. The focus of a Trip Report is not to promote or advertise a specific package tour company as that isn’t allowed on the forums, but you can just mention them in passing and then the other 99% of your Trip Report can be about cities you visited, your impressions of the city or country, what you enjoyed, any difficulties you faced while travelling, etc.

You could read through other members Trip Reports on various forums to see what they write.

Every city, region, Island and country has its own travel forum on here. Plus there are other Beyond Destination forums on travel topics and themes. Here's the forums homepage link to save or bookmark -

https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ForumHome

You can search for a specific forum by clicking on the magnifying glass search icon at the top right side of this website page. Then on the search bar - left side type in 'Forum' and on the right side replace "World" with a city name. The forum pages are best viewed on the full website, not the limited Tripadvisor APP.

Went on the Switzerland. the Matterhorn and Glacier Express tour in June 2017 which was lovely with one exception HOTEL ALEX inn Naters. This is supposed to be a four star hotel, but a four star hotel it is not. POOR FOOD, NO AIR CONDITIONING, UNCOMFORTABLE BEDS, WINDOWS THAT DIDN'T OPEN ETC. I can honestly say that out of the 44 people on our tour, nobody had a good word to say about it. Some of the staff tried their hardest to be helpful, but management just weren't interested. We understood from our Rep that Riveria had received complaints not only from her, but also from other Reps that this hotel was not fit for purpose. We were assured that this hotel would not be used again after the end of the season. I would say to anyone considering this type of holiday, try and find an alternative to the one being offered. I have travelled with Riviera before, but after this, will think long and hard before I do so again

I went on Riviera’s ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ tour to Japan in October 2017. Everything about the trip was wonderful, from the moment we all met at Heathrow till we landed back there at the end of the trip. Our guides were helpful and friendly. The selection of places we visited was good. The hotels were excellent. And of course, Japan was a wonderful place to visit and experience and the people were polite and welcoming.

Very good service. They do look after you very well. Some guides are better than others from a knowledge point of view but I would not hesitate to recommend them.
