Honeymoon & Wedding Cruises

First time cruising.

Dont worry the choice of cruises is now so vast we're sure you'll find the perfect cruise for you. Read over the cruising guide below to help you decide, still not sure call our consultants who will be able to provide expert cruise advice and answer any queries you might have.

A Cruise for all

Cruising provides one of the most idyllic settings for getting married and it is a spectacular way to celebrate a honeymoon or mark a wedding anniversary.

A cruise has all the elements necessary for sheer indulgence: a blissfully romantic setting, excellent amenities and cuisine, five-star service and great entertainment. Whether you want total privacy or are happy to join in with other passengers, there will always be a cruise to suit your needs.

For the more adventurous a cruise offers the opportunity to travel, in comfort, to lots of different places without having to pack and unpack at every stop. To add to the glamour of a cruise ‘special couples’ might receive special treatment such as cabin upgrades and often free champagne. Getting married during a cruise means that a couple can enjoy the romance of a honeymoon at sea sailing into the sunset - with, or without, the guests!

Did you know?It is not uncommon for more than 100 honeymooners to travel on one Caribbean cruise at any one time!

Wedding bells

Couples can get married onboard some ships, but the regulations require the ship has to be either in port, or less than three miles from land, for the licence to be valid. Cruise lines can arrange the ‘red-tape’ requirements on behalf of the couple, or the bride and groom can bring their own minister, rabbi or priest to conduct the official ceremony.

Some cruise lines, Carnival and Princess, even have chapels on ships where the ceremony can take place. Alternatively the cruise line can organise a wedding in one of the ports it visits, arranging all the details such as musicians, cakes, flowers, confetti and even a album of wedding photos and limousines.

Cruise lines can also arrange for ‘renewal of vows’ during the cruise and this ceremony can be conducted by the ship’s captain.

Heavenly HoneymoonHoneymoons on the ocean waves are growing in popularity, and cruise lines often offer ‘added extras’.

Bonuses include a reception hosted by the Captain, commemorative photographs and honeymoon cruise certificates. No cruise line yet has a dedicated bridal suite but many of the ships’ top cabins and penthouse suites are exceptional.

Honeymooners have to take a copy of their marriage licence or relevant forms for immigration purposes and in some instances cruise lines will require these licences to ensure all the ‘honeymoon benefits’ are granted.

Did you know?

The only way for British couples to be married by a ship’s captain is aboard the Grand Princess. Princess Cruises can arrange for the Captain to conduct a valid marriage at sea, provided the ship is in international waters from land.

Happy Anniversaries

Whatever the anniversary, cruise lines will do their utmost to help mark the occasion and recreate the romance of the special day. Some cruise lines offer packages to commemorate special anniversaries such as 10 years, silver or golden weddings.

Bonuses of these packages can include gifts and free first class transfers from home to the ports. Cruise lines without specific packages can also arrange for a gift, cake or champagne to be delivered to a cabin. These can be booked prior to sailing or when aboard.

Where to cruiseWedding and honeymoon packages are available on any number of cruises sailing throughout the world. Some couples will prefer the landscape of Alaska whilst others desire the romance of the Caribbean or the magic of the Mediterranean.

Couples could sail out of and return to ports in the UK, often this offers a longer cruise trip. Alternatively taking a fly-cruise - flying from an airport in the UK to a port to meet the ship - takes cruisers straight to ‘further-afield’ destinations

Cruise companies

COSTA CRUISES offers a range of short four and five-night cruises in the Mediterranean in Spring and Autumn. Departures are from Venice or Genoa and ports of call include Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Cannes, Capri, Corfu and Palma. Some cruises also include an overnight stay in Venice.

FRED OLSEN CRUISE LINES offers a limited number of short cruises each year on Black Watch, Braemar and Black Prince. All these cruises, from 3 to 8 nights, depart from Dover, Southampton, Leith or Greenock and visit ports in France, Spain, Belgium, Channel Islands or Norway.

P&O CRUISES offers a selection of four night short cruises. Arcadia, Aurora and Victoria have four night cruises visiting the Netherlands and the Channel Islands, the special feature being a night in port in Amsterdam.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL will offer its first ever cruises out of Southampton when Splendour of the Seas will sail a number of European itineraries. Short cruises on offer include a four-night Belgium and Netherlands cruise calling at Zeebrugge and Amsterdam, and a three-night France and Channel Islands cruise calling at Brest and St Peter Port.

SEADREAM YACHT CLUB Recognizing that time is a major constraint and to many who have yet to cruise, there is a genuine desire to spend a few days experimenting with being aboard, SeaDream Yacht Club has scheduled a selection of two, three, four and five night sailings aboard SeaDream 1 & 2 in the Mediterranean and Caribbean

After planning a wedding, sometimes the only thing you want on the itinerary for your honeymoon is plenty of rest and relaxation. That’s why romantic honeymoon cruises are the perfect way to celebrate your newly-wedded bliss, stress-free. All the planning is taken care of for you by the cruise line, which means you can focus your energy on disconnecting from reality and connecting with your special someone. If you’re looking for the ultimate island getaway for couples, choose an itinerary with a stop — or two — at Perfect Day at CocoCay, the newly-reimagined private destination by Royal Caribbean in The Bahamas. Read on to find out why this is the best Caribbean destination for newly-married couples, plus Perfect Day at CocoCay honeymoon tips to help you maximize your time ashore.

Perfect Day Coco Cay Thrill Water Park Cabanas

As far as tropical escapes go, Perfect Day at CocoCay has it all — beautiful white sand beaches lapped by crystal clear turquoise waters. Private shoreside cabanas where you can enjoy frothy piña coladas or crisp sparkling wine delivered straight to your loungers. A luxurious beach club with a private infinity pool and floating cabanas that channel French Polynesia vibes. The Caribbean’s largest freshwater pool, where the party never stops. And even a waterpark brimming with white-knuckle slides and exciting rides that are perfect for couples with a taste for adrenaline. Whatever kind of honeymoon experience you’re craving, you’ll find the perfect mix of thrills and amazing ways to chill on this beautiful private island destination by Royal Caribbean.

Perfect Day Coco Cay Chill Cabanas Couple Floating

If you’re taking a romantic honeymoon cruise to Perfect Day at CocoCay, it helps to know which parts of the island you should definitely fit into the day’s itinerary —especially since there are so many things to see and do. Most couples make a beeline for Chill Island® when they arrive to kick back and soak up the sunshine. This serene stretch of beach along the island’s western coast is the go-to place for tranquil vibes and max relaxation. It’s where you’ll find sand that’s as soft and white as powdered sugar and clear blue waters dotted with colorful coral — plus a floating bar just offshore that’s perfect for cooling down with your favorite tropical drink. There are plenty of complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas available for use on a first-come first-serve basis. But, if you really want to dial up your day with your husband or wife, opt for a daybed or a private cabana at Breezy Bay. If you choose the latter, you’ll enjoy dedicated attendant service all day long, so you can keep the Coco Locos coming strong. You’ll also have your own little slice of paradise all to yourself, including unobstructed views of the calm Caribbean waters. What’s more, there’s a snorkel shack nearby where you can rent equipment and take your romantic beach day beneath the waves. This Perfect Day at CocoCay insiders tips covers the top things to do at Perfect Day at CocoCay, plus helpful pointers like what’s complimentary onshore, what hours each restaurant operates, and when to visit certain attractions around the island to avoid waiting in line.

Perfect Day Coco Cay Daredevil Peak Landing Splashing

Some couples choose to spend their honeymoon resting and relaxing, but others like to keep the thrills going strong. If you and your partner are all about fast-paced fun and heart-pounding excitement, you’ll be happy to learn that Perfect Day at CocoCay is also one of the most adventurous honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean. It’s home to Daredevil’s Peak, the tallest waterslide in North America at 135 feet, the largest wave pool in the Caribbean, and two towers loaded with high-octane single- and multi-rider slides, including options you can challenge your special someone to — like twin 75-foot drop slides and double open-flume racers. You’ll find them all at Thrill Waterpark , just a few steps from the entrance to the island. Admission to the park is extra, but here’s a little-known honeymoon tip — book a cabana inside Thrill Waterpark and you’ll enjoy complimentary admission for up to eight guests — plus your own private space close to all the action with dedicated attendant service. Ordering food is easy, considering there’s a Snack Shack onsite at the water park, so you never have to leave the area.

Perfect Day Coco Cay Oasis Lagoon Swim Up Bar Pool

You just got married — you should pencil in some time on your honeymoon to celebrate your recent nuptials! And you won’t find a better place to turn up than Oasis Lagoon — the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean and also the best party spot in the tropics. If you want to work on your golden honeymoon glow, claim any of the in-water loungers that run along the perimeter of the pool. Or lounge out on any of the lagoon’s three swim-up islands and coves — each is set up with in-water seating. In the afternoons, a DJ keeps the beats coming strong while a team of talented bartenders at the swim up bar hand over ice cold brews, sling tropical drinks, and whip up the island’s signature cocktail, the Coco Loco. Conga lines are known to start up spontaneously near the bar, and dancing is always a given. But while the party at Oasis Lagoon might be nonstop, you can still kick back and relax close by. Treat yourself and your partner in adventure to a private cabana near the lagoon, and escape to total zen whenever you’re craving a break from the action.

Coco Beach Club Couple Hugging Infinity Pool, Perfect Day at Coco Cay

If there’s one honeymoon tip that should go without saying, it’s that you shouldn’t be afraid to do it up after your big day. This trip is all about you and your love, and that’s reason enough to go all out and make each moment truly unforgettable. If you’re looking to really dial up your honeymoon visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay, make sure you add the brand new Coco Beach Club — just steps away from Oasis Lagoon and South Beach — to your list. Coco Beach Club is an exclusive beachside oasis on the island’s north shore where every moment is elevated. Admission to the club includes premium amenities and access to an island-chic restaurant that serves up incredible global flavors, including steak and lobster. Not to mention an expansive infinity pool with wow-worthy views of the sparkling Caribbean Sea. You can even book spa treatments here, like a soothing couples’ massage. Want to take your honeymoon a step further? Turn the luxe factor all the way up and reserve one of the first Floating Cabanas in The Bahamas. Fitted with an overwater hammock that’s big enough for two, a private slide right into the ocean, comfortable loungers, a dining area, and lots of deck space, each floating cabana is spacious enough to accommodate up to eight guests — but if you just want to enjoy yours with your special someone, that’s totally fine, too. You’ll also receive cabana concierge service, so you can keep your slice of paradise stocked with your favorite bottle of celebratory bubbly and order bites from the beach club’s restaurant whenever you feel like snacking on something delicious.

Can you feel the wanderlust yet? Whatever your ideal honeymoon vibe, Perfect Day at CocoCay is all about delivering the best beach day ever to a wide range of visitors. So skip the honeymoon Pinterest boards and all the stress-inducing research that usually goes into planning a big couples’ trip. Romantic honeymoon cruises to Perfect Day at CocoCay check all the boxes — from endless ways to recharge and reconnect on pristine white sand beaches, to pulse-pumping thrills, an epic party scene and the most luxurious private island experience in the Caribbean at Coco Beach Club. The best part? You don’t have to worry about planning a single thing.

Tips for Planning and Booking a Cruise

Choose the right cruise.

Research various cruise lines, itineraries, and ships to find one that matches your interests, preferences, and budget. Consider factors like the destinations, cruise duration, onboard amenities, cabin types, and activities offered.

Cruises can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons. Booking early ensures you have a better chance of securing your preferred cabin type and location at a potentially lower price.

Check Visa and Passport Requirements

If your cruise involves international ports of call, ensure that you have valid passports and any necessary visas for all destinations. Keep in mind that some countries require a visa even for a short stopover.

Research the Ports of Call

Familiarize yourself with the ports of call on your itinerary. Look into the attractions, excursions, and local customs for each destination to make the most of your time ashore.

Pack Smartly

Pack appropriate clothing for both onboard and onshore activities. Don’t forget essential items like sunscreen, medication, travel documents, and any necessary adapters for electrical outlets.

Purchase Travel Insurance

Cruise trips involve a substantial investment, so it’s wise to purchase comprehensive travel insurance to protect yourself from unforeseen events, including trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and lost luggage.

Plan Excursions in Advance

Research and book shore excursions ahead of time to avoid missing out on popular activities. Booking through the cruise line is convenient, but you can often find independent operators offering similar experiences.

Budget for Extra Expenses

While many amenities are included in the cruise fare, be prepared for additional costs like gratuities, specialty dining, spa treatments, and alcoholic beverages.

Check Health Requirements

Verify whether or not the cruise line has any vaccination or health requirements to ensure you’re prepared to step aboard the ship.

Arrive at the Departure Port Early

To avoid unnecessary stress, plan to arrive at the departure port a day before your cruise begins, especially if you’re traveling from a distance. This ensures you won’t miss the ship due to potential travel delays.

Stay Informed

Stay informed about any updates or changes related to your cruise. Check the cruise line’s website or sign up for alerts to receive relevant information.

Honeymoon Cruises FAQs

Why go on a cruise for your honeymoon.

Ideal for couples seeking a stress-free escape, cruises offer a fabulous blend of fun, play, relaxation, and romance. Especially when booking honeymoon cruise packages all-inclusive, you’ll be able to access different activities and facilities all bundled into one price. This allows you to focus on making the most of your vacation without constantly having to pull out your wallet.

When’s the cheapest month to go on a honeymoon cruise?

The cheapest month to go on a honeymoon cruise varies from one destination to another, with the low season being the least expensive. In the Caribbean, that’s generally from May through November, but you’ll want to be aware of the risk of hurricanes and tropical storms which peak between August and October.

The off-season for a European or an Alaskan cruise is typically considered November through March, although river cruises visiting Europe’s popular Christmas markets around the holidays incur high season rates.

The industry also has what’s referred to as “repositioning cruises,” with the ships moving from one location to another between seasons. During this time, usually during the spring and fall, you might be able to score honeymoon cruises at a more budget-friendly cost.

What should I consider when choosing a cruise?

When looking for the best cruising experience for your honeymoon, it’s important to consider several factors. That includes your budget, the destinations, onboard amenities, dining options, and available shore activities. Be sure to research honeymoon cruise packages that suit your preferences and compare each to determine which will provide the best value and overall experience.

Why You Should Take A Cruise For Your Honeymoon

Think of all the most wonderful and romantic honeymoon holiday destinations : a sunny beach or a vibrant city, and then imagine you could take away all of the stress of the holiday planning. No more hectic airports, no more planning activities, trying to find great restaurants or struggling to book accommodation that suits your every need, and not even having to step foot on an airplane. Sound like bliss? A honeymoon on a cruise ship might be for you!

With five-star restaurants, hundreds of activities, and a variety of beautiful destinations built straight into a cruise holiday, it is the perfect option for a romantic trip with your loved one. Especially after spending months planning your dream wedding , the last thing you want to do is to add the pressure of planning a holiday too. Here are the top reasons you should consider going on a cruise for your honeymoon:

Amazing Destinations

Whether you choose to take a cruise around Europe, to an exotic Caribbean island or an Alaskan glacier , there are endless possibilities for your cruise destinations. Wherever you go, a cruise gives you the opportunity to visit many amazing places from the comfort of your room or balcony, just order a drink and sit back to enjoy the views! There are lots of cruise options depending on your preferences and your budget, so have a look for one that suits you!

Remember to include space in your budget to invest in a great travel insurance plan . Travel insurance is so important, and more and more companies like Staysure are offering specific cruise holiday insurance which is tailored to cruise holidays.

A cruise also takes away the stress of traveling, since traveling is the main event! Take the hectic airports, missed flights, and missing luggage nightmares of flying to your holiday destination away, and replace them with a relaxed afternoon sipping drinks at the pool with your loved one, dining at high-quality restaurants, soaking up the sun, and partying into the night. Exactly what you need after the stress of planning a wedding!

Everything Is Included

Most cruise packages are all-inclusive . This means that you have access to everything that is included for a fixed price. Instead of the stress of finding and booking a romantic restaurant for every night of your trip, enjoy beautiful meals at five-star restaurants and try incredible food and drinks, all included in the price of your cruise. Cruises often feature a variety of bars, clubs and parties, where you can dance the night away for no added cost.

Cruises also come ready for all those exciting date nights you would normally pour time and money into planning. There are loads of activities on offer like movies, cooking classes, comedy shows, dance lessons, spas and so much more. All of these activities are included in the price, making a cruise so worth it for your money, and has the extra bonus of taking so much stress out of planning your trip. Focus your planning energy on your wedding and book an all-inclusive cruise to take one stress out of an already hectic time.

Cruises are full of luxury and romance for couples. Some cruises will offer a welcome bottle of champagne, chocolates, a couples massage, rose petals, candles, romantic dinners, and so on. A cruise is a wonderful place to relax – it’s basically a floating five-star hotel!

Choosing a cruise for your honeymoon will give you an unforgettable romantic getaway at a fraction of the stress of planning a regular holiday. There are staff on hand 24/7 to take care of everything you need and give you the experience of a lifetime.

This depends on you! Like relationships, every cruise is different giving you plenty of options for the perfect honeymoon cruise. If you are looking for an intimate cruising experience, you may want to consider a smaller cruise line. However, if you want the full-on resort like experience, the larger operators may be more up your alley.

A honeymoon cruise is what you want it to be! Cruises are a great way to enjoy a stress-free honeymoon where you can leave the worry about packing and unpacking, and getting between destinations behind and focus on what is most important – your spouse and the wonderful adventure you are embarking on!

This depends on your tastes. Some couples find nothing more romantic than spending a day relaxing on a secluded beach or canoodling in warm, tranquil waters whereas others may love the idea of strolling along cobblestone streets and drinking wine in candlelit restaurants.  The wonderful thing about having so many amazing options for your honeymoon cruise is that you are bound to find one that is perfect for you!

There are many different options available for honeymoon cruises making it within reach of many couples. In fact, you may even find that a cruise could help you save money compared to overland options. Many of the lines also offer great discounts on their websites so make sure to shop around before booking to find the best deals.

What's more, we've got honeymoon combos that take you right the way from our neighbours in Europe, to the other side of the world in New Zealand. The Best Multi Destination Honeymoons in Europe

Austria is one of Europe's most serene and scenic destinations, perfect for honeymooners who love embracing the great outdoors. And with so many cities and regions to explore, choosing just one really doesn't do the country justice. Honeymooners who want to see as much of Austria as possible will be pleased to know that the railway infrastructure here makes travelling around super easy!

Couples can enjoy a multi destination honeymoon in Austria starting their holiday in the capital city of Vienna, a town full of museums, opera performances and gorgeous palaces. The city of Salzburg is just two and a half hours away on a train and gives couples that alpine city feel. The birthplace of Mozart is bursting with culture and there are plenty of medieval buildings to gaze at.

The train from Salzburg to Innsbruck is less than two hours long and takes you to one of Austria's most famous skiing districts. The medieval old town is lined with colourful buildings which sit at the base of the mountains.

To complete your honeymoon tour of Austria, take a two and a half hour train from Innsbruck to Bregenz, a city which sits on Austria's eastern district at the end of Lake Constance. If music fans time it right, you may even catch a glimpse of the annual Bregenz festival which takes place on the lakeside's floating stage.

Croatia is a gorgeous honeymoon destination. With almost half of it's border made up of coastline, it's bursting with romantic spots to spend your first married holiday. Start your multi destination honeymoon in the country's capital Split, a party destination with a buzzing harbour and boutiques galore.

When you're ready for some fine dining in a medieval town, embark on the three-hour drive down to the stunning coastal town of Dubrovnik. Slightly more expensive than Split, here you will find an array of high-end restaurants and bars, as well as quaint cobbled streets you can get lost in for the day.

Now, it's time for us to let you into a little-known secret... Croatia borders Montenegro, one of Europe's hidden gems and the home to the stunning Kotor Bay. It takes less than two hours to drive from Dubrovnik to Kotor, but busses are also available (and very cheap!) if you don't have access to a car.

Montenegro is truly one of the most beautiful locations on Earth. It's hidden old town and breath-taking bay are the perfect backdrop for any romantic holiday. The drive or bus ride between Croatia and Montenegro briefly crosses the countryside of Bosnia and Herzegovina, another gorgeous country you could add to your trip.

Start in the capital city of Greece, Athens, where culture lovers can get their history fix. With centuries-old architecture and a plethora of landmarks to visit, you won't find yourself short of things to do here. Once you're ready for a rest, catch an internal flight from Athens to Kos. The flight takes just one hour and can usually be bought for less than £100!

Kos is full of luxurious all-inclusive and luxury hotels that will have you and your partner fully restored from your busy Athens trip. When you're ready for another bustling city, catch the 40-minute ferry from Kos to Bodrum. Return prices start from around 25 euros per person for the trip (which can be done in one day), but there's plenty to do if you want to stay longer.

Bodrum bay features twin bays offering views of the historic Bodrum Castle inbound, and the gorgeous Aegean Sea as you look out. From Bodrum, you can travel to pretty much anywhere in Turkey, but we'd recommend returning to nearby Greece and visiting Rhodes for a final leg of rest and relaxation before heading home.

4. Spain: Barcelona, Madrid, Seville; Portugal: Lisbon

Spain is such a diverse country offering something different in every region, and it's perfect for visiting multiple destinations because travelling within Spain is not only easy, but cheap, too! If you start your honeymoon in the vibrant city of Barcelona, you can then travel to the country's capital, Madrid, for just seven euros!

The train journey takes just two and a half hours and runs multiple times a day. Similarly Barcelona, Madrid has plenty to offer but will give you much more of a capital city feel with bustling shops, rooftop bars and music venues to explore.

When you're ready for sun and serenity, another train journey will take you straight to Seville, one of Spain's most beautiful cities. Renowned for its high temperatures, you'll catch a tan in Seville even in low season. The train from Madrid to Seville takes just over two and a half hours and runs every hour on most days. You can drive, but that'll set you back closer to five hours.

If you need a coastal kick to end your multi destination honeymoon, flights from Seville to Lisbon, Portugal, take just one hour and can be bought for as little as £33 with some airlines. What a bargain! And the best bit? Lisbon has the best of both worlds giving you city vibes with nearby beach resorts for that coastal cocktails feel.

5. France: Paris; Belgium: Bruges; Luxembourg; Germany: Cologne

Last on our list of multi centre honeymoons in Europe is a trip which can see you visit four countries in as many days due to the close proximity of them all. Our journey begins in Paris, the most romantic city in the world and home to one of the best honeymoon hotels on the planet. Paris offers romance, fine wine, culture and couture with no shortage of pretty boutiques and buzzing bars to get lost in.

Just a 90 minute train journey away is Brussels, the capital of Belgium. Whilst Brussels is fairly built up, the nearby town of Bruges is a must-visit for romantic couples who want scenery, great beer and plenty of museums.

Our next stop is Luxembourg, one of Europe's smallest countries which is just a two hour flight from Brussels. Home to the Vianden Castle, Cathedrale Notre-Dame and the Palais Grand-Ducal, there's no shortage of sights to see in this miniature land-locked country.

With so many neighbouring countries, there are a number of places to visit after Luxembourg, but Cologne is top on our list of recommendations. Well known as Germany's cultural hub, the city spans much of the Rhine River and is home to gothic architecture, medieval buildings and many artistic masterpieces. You can travel by train, or do the journey by car.

6. Thailand: Bangkok, Phuket, Khao Lak

Thailand is a popular destination for backpacking and travelling Brits, but it also makes an incredible and budget-friendly honeymoon destination for couples who live to travel and see as much of a country as they can.

As a country, Thailand is huge, so honeymooning in Thailand and visiting just one place doesn't do it justice. There are so many locations in Thailand worth visiting, but Bangkok, Phuket and Khao Lak should be top of your list. The easiest way to travel between these places is by plane or bus.

Flights from the UK to Bangkok are available, and you can fly direct from London, landing in Thailand in just 11 and a half hours. Flights from other UK cities are also available, but usually require a stop off mid-way.

From the bustling city of Bangkok, where we'd highly recommend the street food and nightlife, you can hop on a one hour flight straight to Phuket, a province which the best of both worlds when it comes to city life and beautiful beaches. The Phi Phi Islands are just off the southern coast of Phuket and are a must-see while you're there!

The last leg on this trip (though it doesn't have to end there!) is a two hour bus or car journey up the east coast of Thailand, finishing up in Khao Lak. Ending your trip here is perfect because Khao Lak is one of the most serene and beautiful series of villages in the country.

This area was essentially erased by the awful 2004 tsunami, and the community here have worked tirelessly to rebuild it. What better way to end your trip than putting money back into such a deserving economy, and enjoying breath-taking views while you do so?

James Chapman , independent honeymoon specialist and travel counsellor knows all explains, " Bali honeymoons are so popular as they offer five-star luxury accommodation at great value. Private villas complete with your own pool are a lot more affordable here than you might think.

"It’s an island which is full of natural beauty, tropical charm, friendly locals and and the culture means you could easily spend your whole honeymoon here. However, the most direct route to Bali from the UK is via Singapore, so why not stop off for a few days and add an extra twist to your honeymoon!

"Michelin star street food, incredible architecture and an airport that has its own rain forest are just a few of the highlights in Singapore.”

If you'd like to add an extra leg to your trip, Malaysia is just one hour and ten minutes via plane from Singapore. You can fly directly from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, with flights available from just £45, it'd be criminal not to...

8. Japan, South Korea, Alaska (USA)

Japan is an ideal place to honeymoon if you're keen to dive into the culture of another country. Whether it's the bustling city-scapes in Tokyo, the temples and shrines in Kyoto or the lakes of Hakone, you could spend months discovering new experiences in the streets of Japan.

The flight to Japan can be direct if you're travelling into Tokyo. Flights to other areas such as Osaka are possible, but often include a stopover in Dubai - which could totally be extended into another leg of the trip.

Visiting at least two cities in Japan is a must, with each offering something completely different and unique.

Getting from Japan to South Korea is fairly easy and the journey can be mad by flight, train or even ferry, so those not keen on too much flying can opt for another mode of transport. South Korea is another cultural paradise, with historical sights, national parks and museums to explore - and don't forget to try the Korean fried chicken, trust us, you won't regret it!

If you fancy a cruise honeymoon that's completely unique, you can actually cruise from Japan to Alaska in the United States. The cruise takes around four weeks and most itineraries will take you to a number of Japanese ports before cruising international waters and arriving in Alaska.

9. India, Sri Lanka, Maldives

James recommends honeymooners visit the Maldives and Sri Lanka as a twin-centre honeymoon, "The Maldives for a long time has been the bucket list honeymoon destination and it’s easy to see why. Private islands surrounded by pristine beaches and crystal-clear water, it really is paradise.

Imagine this, after spending a week exploring Sri Lanka, a country that has an abundance of history, culture, wild elephants, and stunning scenery. Sri Lanka and the Maldives are only an hour apart, so they go hand in hand to keep both beach lovers and activity enthusiasts happy on their honeymoon."

Sri Lanka is located off the southern coast of India and flights from one to the other can be as quick as two and a half hours long. Once you've landed on Indian soil, the honeymoon opportunities are endless. And those who want to continue the journey will be delighted to discover that countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Oman and more are just a few hours away.

10. Dubai, Kenya, Tanzania: Zanzibar

James's next recommendation for multi centre honeymoon is the ultimate triple whammy which takes you between Asian and African countries for the holiday of a lifetime. He says, "There really is no limit to multi destination holidays, so I wanted to throw in triple centre honeymoon that has everything.

"A stop in Kenya to see the Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara, a short flight to Zanzibar to stay in the paradise that is Nungwi, (which really does rival Maldives honeymoons for its beaches and ocean!), then finally a stop off in glamorous Dubai, for some sightseeing and shopping on the way home."

How incredible does that sound? You can do this multi destination honeymoon in any order you like, with Dubai, Kenya and Zanzibar all operating direct flights to multiple cities in the UK, making it even easier to coordinate.

Highlighting the glorious options that a twin-centre honeymoon in Africa has to offer, James explains, "A honeymoon in South Africa might not seem like an obvious choice, but with some of the best vineyards in the world, breath-taking scenery, luxury accommodation, fine dining, and honeymoon safaris , it has pretty much everything on most people’s honeymoon wish list.

"The one thing South Africa doesn't have in abundance is idyllic honeymoon beaches, which is it’s well worth the four hour flight to another jewel in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius, where white sandy beaches and turquoise oceans await."

Honeymoons in Mauritius are so popular because of the serene beaches and natural landscapes which are just ready for you to explore, and the beauty of Madagascar is just a two and a half hour flight away.

12. Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana: Kokrobite, Kakum

Unsplash / Jeffrey Ofori (Bortianor, Ghana)

Some of the most famous coastlines in West Africa belong to Senegal, Cape Verde and Sierra  Leone, but one of our favourite honeymoon multi destination ideas involves three lesser-known spots. Explore the undiscovered beauty of Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Cameroon for an unforgettable honeymoon in Africa.

You can begin your twin centre honeymoon tour at the Azagny National Park which sits on Côte d'Ivoire's coastline, giving you both nature and beaches galore. You can then head to Abidjan, the country's urban centre where you can catch a one hour flight to Ghana's capital, Accra.

Accra has its fair share of beach resorts, but the real beauty of Ghana's coast lie in Kokrobite (Bortianor), Takoradi, Lome and Ada Foah. You could spend days relaxing, fishing, heading out to sea and being pampered in any one of these resort towns.

Once you've had enough time to relax, head up to Kakum National Park, just a three hour drive from capital city Accra, for an experience you'll never forget. Enjoy unspoilt views over the forest when you walk across the famous Kakum Canopy Walkway, and get up close and personal with forest elephants, bongo antelopes and primates while you're there.

Morocco in one of the most sought-after African honeymoon destinations due to it's hybrid of African and Middle-Eastern culture, cuisine and architecture. From the bustling streets Marrakesh to the coastal capital of Rabat, you won't be short of things to do on your honeymoon in Morocco.

And that trip to North Africa can easily be turned into a twin centre honeymoon, or one with multiple stops as the Canady Islands are just a short flight or ferry-ride away. If you head south along the coastline of Morocco, towards the Western Sahara, you'll find yourself less than 1,000km from the sunny Canaries.

Honeymooners can fly or travel by boat from Morocco to Gran Canaria, Tenerife or Lanzarote.

14. USA: Chicago, New York; Canada; Montréal

Unsplash / Timo Wagner (New York City)

Post-wedding holidays to the United States are so popular because you can have a multi centre honeymoon and experience so many different types of trips all in one go. One of our favourite combinations is travelling between Chicago, New York and Quebec City. Not only is it super easy to travel between each location, but at each stop you get a super unique experience different to the last.

Chicago has plenty to offer honeymooners who enjoy a city break. From museums and art institutes, to Cloud Gate and the Magnificent Mile, you'll need to pack your walking shoes as there's plenty to explore.

After hitting a show in Chicago's west end, you can catch a short two hour flight to New York. If you love a road trip, the drive is 12 hours and takes you through Michigan, Indianapolis and Philadelphia. New York is up there with one of the most diverse honeymoon destinations around. You can stick to the main sights and spend your time exploring Manhattan, or, branch out a little further.

We  love when couples go rogue and explore what New York really has to offer, and that includes visiting the cool and quirky suburb of Brooklyn, spending some time in Long Island and in the renowned Hamptons neighbourhood, or heading upstate for a quieter trip.

Speaking of upstate, travelling to the northern boroughs of New York take you closer to our third stop, Montréal. Travelling to Montréal takes you across the border and into Canada, seeing you visit two countries in one trip. You can drive from central New York to Montréal in six hours, but we'd highly recommend the eight and a half hour train which takes you through the Hudson Valley and has views to die for.

Montréal speaks for itself, being (arguably!) one of Canada's most beautiful towns in the French district, you can get lost in the old town and spend days on end enjoying the cuisine, friendly atmosphere and French accents!

15. USA, The Caribbean

Unsplash / Bogdan Pasca (Marina Bay, Antigua and Barbuda)

James has another twin centre honeymoon suggestion for us. Proposing a combination of the United States and the Caribbean Islands, he says, "There are so many possibilities with this combination. A stop off in New York to see a Broadway show, a Californian road trip or a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon, are just a few options when in the United States.

"The beauty of visiting America first on your honeymoon is that after exploring there, you’re at the gateway to the Caribbean Islands which are home to some of the best beaches in the world. The biggest decision is deciding which island to go to. St Lucia, Antigua and Barbados remain the most popular with my customers, but there are many more to consider."

And we couldn't agree more with James on this one. What's more, you can catch a flight to the Caribbean from pretty much any state in America - it's super easy and well-connected, meaning you could combine almost any state with a number of the gorgeous islands in the Caribbean.

Honeymoons in the Caribbean lend themselves so well if you're after a multi destination trip!

16. Peru, Brazil

Multi centre honeymoon work so well if you're looking to explore some of the incredible destinations in South America. Though there are dozens of countries you could add to your trip, we're think combining Peru and Brazil makes for a particularly adventurous, yet beautiful honeymoon.

Starting in Peru, there is so much for you to explore. Couples who love the outdoors will adore hiking up the mountains (Machu Picchu - we're looking at you!), exploring the desert dunes and uncovering ancient ruins - there is literally endless things to do! As well as the lush jungles and extensive wildlife, Peru is also home to some gorgeous beach resort areas such as Lima, Paracas and Mancora.

Though Peru is large, Brazil is enormous in comparison. It's the fifth largest country in the world, so exploring it to its full extent is almost impossible - but that doesn't mean you can't try! There are a number of routes to fly from Peru to Brazil as both have good airport connections, which is good news for budding travellers who want flexibility during their multi centre honeymoon.

17. Australia: Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane

Unsplash / City of Gold Coast (Gold Coast)

Australia regularly tops the list of countries that Brits love to emigrate to, and with good reason, too. It's a known fact that almost 1.2million Brits now call Australia home, but you don't have to move there permanently to explore what this Oceania country has to offer.

Due to the sheer size of the country, flying is the best way to travel around Australia, but the multi destination honeymoon route we've got planned can be done by car if  you fancy a road trip.

The first stop is the most southern of the three. Known as the cultural capital of Australia, Melbourne is said to have a European vibe to it and hosts many of the country's sporting and cultural events. It gives honeymooners more of a city feel, which is perfect to get out of your system before heading Sydney's Gold Coast.

As we mentioned, flying is easier, but the road trip between Melbourne and Sydney is said to be one of the country's best, taking you through Australia's incredible national parks, tracing the breath-taking beaches and, if planned carefully, will see you cross through the capital city of Canberra.

If you're keen on road trips, another we'd highly recommend after your trip to Sydney, is embarking on the nine hour drive up the east coast to Brisbane. You and your partner can cover 900 kilometers of road whilst taking in the unbelievably beautiful scenic sights along the way.

18. French Polynesia

You don't need us to tell you that a honeymoon in French Polynesia is one you'll  never forget. A visit here will have you wondering whether French Polynesia was made specifically for honeymoons. Whilst most people choose to visit one of the islands and stay there for the remainder of their trip, we would highly recommend turning this into, at the very least, a twin centre honeymoon.

Though it's technically an overseas collectivity of France, French Polynesia located miles away in the South Pacific and is made up of more than 100 islands, each one as beautiful as the next. The four main islands are Bora Bora, Tahiti, Moorea and Papeete, all of which make incredible honeymoon destinations.

There are a number of honeymoon cruises which take you to multiple destinations in French Polynesia over the course of one to two weeks. Cruises are a brilliant way to see more than one location on one trip and take the hassle out of having to plan transport between islands. Honeymoon in Bora Bora here we come...

When you're traveling more than 24 hours to a destination, turning it into a multi-destination honeymoon makes the journey all the more worthwhile, and that's something we'd definitely recommend doing if you're honeymooning in New Zealand. One of the planet's most beautiful countries, New Zealand offers couples endless options for romantic honeymoon experiences no matter which part you visit.

Auckland is one of the easiest places to fly into from the UK and is a great place to start your New Zealand tour. It's the metropolitan hub of the country and gives you a taste of what city life here has to offer. It's vibrant and diverse, but still packed full of beach resorts and coastal views.

Getting from Auckland to Wellington  can be done in a one hour flight, which is super easy. But the most scenic way to travel from one to another, is to do the drive which takes you through central New Zealand, through stunning and unmissable locations such as Lake Taupo and Pureora, Kaimanawa and Tararua Forest Parks.

Once you're done exploring New Zealand's capital of Wellington and its serene waterfront promenade, we'd recommend doing the long drive down to Queenstown. The most common route takes you down the east coast of New Zealand and through Christchurch (which is well-worth a stopover in).

Queenstown is located in the southern shores of the South Island's Lake Wakatipu which sits at the foot of the incredibly beautiful southern Alps. We couldn't think of a more perfect place to end your multi destination honeymoon, but if you're not ready for it to be over, you could finish up on Stewart Island. It's truly a beauty.

It all sounds amazing, doesn't it? But how do you go about planning one? Lizzie Jones, Marketing Director at honeymoon experts Turquoise shares four expert tips on how to plan a multi destination honeymoon.

1. Consider a Pre-Planned Package

We know we've totally sold the idea planning a multi-destination honeymoon, but we can't lie and say they are simple to organise. If you aren't the best with logistics, and want as little admin as possible, consider a pre-planned multi destination honeymoon package.

Many honeymoon suppliers offer multi destination honeymoon packages which cover rail, driving, flying and even honeymoon cruises. More on that below...

2. Plan in Rest Time

Even the most energetic, adventurous couples need some rest and relaxation. Lizzie advises, "Think about when you want to relax. Traditionally, multi destination or twin centre honeymoons are a city, followed by a beach or safari, for example. But why not relax first and then head out on an exhilarating experience afterwards when you're rested and caught up on sleep?

"I'd particularly advise this if you're heading out on your honeymoon straight after the wedding.  I'd also encourage you to not try and pack in too much. You want to ensure you have enough rest time between locations. If you try to pack too much in, you won't have enough time to really enjoy the locations. No one wants to feel like they're constantly packing and unpacking on honeymoon."

3. Consider the Season!

Lizzie says, "Not all multi-destination trips take place in nearby locations, so if you're travelling to two different destinations on a twin centre honeymoon, consider the season and time of year in both."

We couldn't agree more. Different countries and locations have different dry and wet seasons, and you should also consider peak tourism times for each of your locations to ensure you're planning it at the right time.

4. Save the Best Until Last

Though your whole honeymoon will be a dream come true, when island hopping, Lizzie says, "Save the best until last to ensure you end on a high."

It's unlikely you'll plan a honeymoon knowing which location is going to be your favourite, but if you're, for example, island hopping in Tahiti, and you're planning on splashing out on an over-water hut or floating house, you may want that to be how you end the honeymoon, as it'll be hard to beat afterwards.

Multi Destination Honeymoon Packages

There really is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to multi destination honeymoons, which means honeymoon packages for such holidays are better done bespoke.

We'd recommend speaking to a travel agent or company, talking them through your dream honeymoon vision, and asking them what they'd recommend. Many agents will be able to put together a package that suits your preferences to a tee.

However, you can absolutely find multi-destination honeymoon packages that suit your wants and needs with the right travel agents and experts. Turquoise Holidays, for example, offer a range of twin centre honeymoons such as their Sri Lanka and Maldives deal, their island hopping in Tahiti holiday and their Dubai and Oman multi destination honeymoon package.

The 15 best honeymoon destinations in the UK and Ireland

By Harriet Jones

The 15 best honeymoon destinations in the UK and Ireland

The seismic shift in the wedding industry has for some led to the immense scaling down of their big day, and the holiday that comes after it. For many couples, it’s meant choosing the UK as their main destination (even if only initially); their mindset may have shifted from large to little and from abroad to home, but that doesn’t mean they need to compromise on the exceptional quality the trip deserves. There are so many thoughtful hideaways stuffed in and around our islands that are ideal for such a momentous break. These are the places and properties we recommend: the high-end hotels, the lo-fi cabins, the glamping sites, the cottages made for two. The sort of spots that are heart-soaringly lovely, reassuringly romantic and just the right kind of special to suit the occasion.

1. Alderney Channel Islands

Alderney, Channel Islands

If Jersey was dubbed ‘the honeymoon island’ back in the 1950s for the bright young things who wed at Chelsea Town Hall and then skimmed across the sea, then Alderney should be the equivalent in the 2020s. It’s a low-profile Channel Island within touching distance of France , where the summer stretches out like a wobbly mirage, only melting into a mild winter at the very last opportunity. Smaller than Jersey, it draws in travellers looking for something truly genuine and timeless. For an island with fewer pubs than your hands have digits it’s got a couple of cute hotels. There’s Braye Beach Hotel , situated on a spectacular sandy stretch, where upstairs the best rooms have breezy balconies and downstairs there’s a new, upbeat steakhouse and cocktail bar called The Vaults (Oscar makes a mean Mojito).

Book your stay at Braye Beach Hotel

Of those handful of pubs, some have rooms, the best being The Georgian House . It’s adored by locals, and if you’re not dancing in the garden to a sea shanty, pint of cider in hand, by 10pm then something has gone terribly wrong. A lot of what’s to do centres around the sea: cliff-jumping, volleyball on the beach, rock-pooling for winkles and samphire, ear-wigging live music from pizza joint The Moorings with bare feet buried into the warm sand. At night, hunt for clouds of glow worms in the dark water, zapping about like fireworks. The really fun part, though, is the journey in and out: flying in on a beaten-up 12-seater plane is just as exhilarating as zipping over the Maldives , and if the weather is fine the sapphire blue is just as blue and the diamond specks just as phenomenal-looking.

Another recent opening is The Blonde Hedgehog , named after the distinctive pale hedgehogs that are often spotted after-dark. Nina rooms are spread across two neighbouring townhouses in the pretty, cobblestoned main town of St Anne.

2. Islandhopping Isles of Scilly

Island-hopping, Isles of Scilly

Helicoptering into an archipelago might seem a little far-fetched right now, but it doesn’t have to be. Neither does the idea of chalk-white empty beaches, discovering secret coves, visiting clapboard crab shacks or pottering around a miniscule island without a car in sight. All of these delights can be found in the Scillies (and yes, it’s a honeymoon, why not chopper in?). Of the 140-odd isles that make up this destination off the Cornish coast, just five are inhabited, which means that a 10- to 14-day trip is enough time to hop around and get a feel for each. Although you will arrive (by boat or plane) to the main island St Mary’s, where there are a handful of cars, the residents here are experts at slow living and this laidback attitude will sink into your hurried soul like warm honey. Stay at the Star Castle hotel – it’s elevated, so gives a pretty view across the harbour. St Martin’s is the island where some of those elusive, desolate beaches can be found – ribbons of sand broken up by jaunty, paint-chipped sailing boats. Snorkel and swim before cycling to Holly and James’s vineyard for wine-tasting and cloudy apple juice.

Book your stay at Star Castle hotel

Next up is the smallest island, Bryher, at a petite one and a half miles long it often feels exposed – keep an eye out for puffins bracing themselves against the gale. It’s got one of the area's loveliest hotels to retreat to though, Hell Bay, a charming New England-style house with terraces that flood with sunlight streaming across the Atlantic. If short on time and it’s a decision between the final islands, Tresco and St Agnes, both are wildly different. St Agnes is as remote as it gets and is much more of a campsite affair, where cooking fresh lobster from an honesty box is supper, but if romance to you is about staying in a groomed apartment with waterfront brasseries serving chilli and lemongrass crab linguine (The Ruin beach café), then Tresco is the one.

3. Edinburgh Scotland

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh may not spring to mind for a minimoon, but that would be to ignore its sensational spirit and its small footprint bursting with things to do and places to stay (from the plush big-hitters to the tough-to-find B&Bs). Remembering as well that the galleries, smart dining scene, museums and shopping can all be mixed in with blustery hilltop hikes and countryside pints. Plus, there’s something exciting coming this autumn, a townhouse hotel, the little sister to sporting estate Gleneagles . Housed in the former Bank of Scotland, it’s likely to become the sort of urban pad where, like moths to a flame, high-earning creatives will gather to cement deals and couples will come to exclaim over the extraordinary roof terrace. If planning an earlier escape, choose either The Balmoral (for old-school glitz) or The Dunstane Houses (grown-up yet still cool).

Book your stay at Dunstane Houses

After a couple of nights head an hour north to the legendary Gleneagles , voted the best hotel in the UK at the Condé Nast Traveller 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards . This legendary place often feels like it has a split personality between night and day: morning sees the wholesome, Barbours-on, scuffed-wellies brigade but this jolly vibe slowly morphs and is replaced by sheer gracefulness by 7pm. The white-clothed tables in the Strathearn restaurant glint with silver and walnut-coloured trolleys glide silently around, their steaming plates covered under polished cloches. Eat here in the summer and the light is hauntingly beautiful, the hazy evening sun eventually dimming and notching up the soft pools of candlelight scattered around the room.

4. London England

London, England

Pre-pandemic, there may have been a slight lethargy towards the upmarket hotels found in Mayfair , Soho and Chelsea. A kind of tiring of classic luxury, with travellers seeking out experience over a clutch of five stars. But now there’s a returning lust for these grande dames and the cosseting they so exquisitely excel at. There couldn’t be a better antidote to staring at the same four magnolia walls of home than checking in at The Lanesborough . A riot of scaled-up Regency splendour saturated in colour, it’s an injection of glee for the post-lockdown soul.

Book your stay at The Lanesborough

The Dorchester is still reassuringly robust, remaining a stalwart for the A-list and, thanks to new energy from super-young chef Tom Booton, now serving the best Scotch eggs and lobster tarts in town.

Book your stay at The Dorchester

But Claridge ’s sneaks in, in its quiet, elegant way, as top of the spoiling pile. A hotel that never seems to have to try, yet for more than 100 years has remained current; a vodka Martini in the Fumoir Bar has been the most glamorous thing to do in the city since 1929.

Book your stay at Claridge's

There are some new kids on the block though, not placed to rival the dames, but there to zhuzh up the central-London scene. The Mayfair Townhouse in Green Park sets its sparkly, quirky mood on entry with a human-size peacock sculpture covered in thousands of Swarovski crystals (and minibars in rooms are free – a very nice touch).

Book your stay at The Mayfair Townhouse

The Nomad in Covent Garden is tipped to be the new Ned (by the same group), and this summer country house Beaverbrook – a proud Surrey legend – opens its first city outpost in Chelsea, which promises to be a close-knit, Georgian affair with a dollop of theatre (the rooms are named after London stages).

5. Cotswolds England

Cotswolds, England

Ah, the Cotswolds . It’s safe to say that it’s a minimoon magnet, due to its smart boutique hotels , unstuffy take on manor houses and cottage owners who know that style involves much more than a duck-egg-blue coat of paint. When it comes to those hotels, there’s a clutch that really stand out, all within an hour’s drive of one another – these types of places tend to orbit around a handful of terrifically chic villages such as Burford, Kingham and Broadway. The Farncombe Estate sits on the fringes of the latter and cradles three properties in its manicured pastures: Dormy House , a snazzy country-house hotel so perfectly pitched guests are rebooking at breakfast; Foxhill Manor the eight-bedroom little sister, which is more relaxed with a do-as-you-please policy; and The Fish , best described as a stripped-back, more affordable Dormy, with the addition of a clutch of hillside huts and treehouses .

Find more of our favourite hotels in the Cotswolds

Venture half an hour to Kingham and Carole Bamford’s The Wild Rabbit is an upscale pub-with-rooms with food that speaks to the showy side of things – don’t expect hearty pub grub. Another 20-minute drive south is the village of Southrop, which has been transformed by Thyme , a passion project from owner Caryn Hibbert. In 2002 she set about restoring a set of honey-stone historic buildings, starting with a cookery school. It’s now a veritable hamlet: cottages, hotel rooms, farm, restaurant, pub, spa… Go for the English Rose room in The Lodge, it’s got fabulous pink walls, gold mirrors and a gilded drinks trolley. The pool may be outside but don’t let that put you off, it’s bath-warm even in the depths of winter .

6. The Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands

They say romance is subjective, but it would be very difficult to challenge the allure of the Scottish Highlands . The cloud-wreathed peaks, the slopes pocked with dense moss, khaki-green grassy plains, reeds swaying by misty, empty lochs – it’s the emptiness, in fact, that does it. Empty, yet at the same time deeply atmospheric. What could be better than a lodge made for two in the midst of all this beauty? 57 Nord opened in 2019 and is the antithesis of the average Scottish bothy that can be found in these parts. It’s light, airy, supremely modern, with more than a hint of Scandi, and so clean-cut design-wise that it slices through the wildness of the landscape like a smooth blade. All sharp lines and acres of glass, white ceramics and subtle grey mottled marble, topped off with a steel roof. For something more (seemingly) traditional, The Fife Arms , set at the foot of the craggy Cairngorm mountains is, at first sight, a Scottish hunting lodge revamped. But look closer and the real excitement is all in spotting the unique details, such as the electric-blue blown glass chandelier in the lobby and the original watercolour painting by Queen Victoria (it’s tucked away behind the door as you enter). It’s like a contemporary art gallery and hotel all rolled into one deliciously curated package.

7. The Cary Arms Devon England

The Cary Arms, Devon, England

Babbacombe Bay in Torquay, where they ring a bell when dolphins come to visit, has one of those breakneck hills leading down to it that feels like a stage of the Tour de France. Three quarters of the way down sits The Cary Arms , a gloriously nautical pub that delivers so much more than just a cracking Sunday lunch that locals travel miles for. The rooms in the main building are nice enough in a creaky inn way, but the latest additions, six white and royal-blue, glass-fronted beach huts, were built purely for couples on a rocky outcrop below the small spa. Each has a porthole window in the peak of the roof, the kind that needs long arms and a wooden stick (provided) to close the solid shutters. But it’s intentional – the beds are on a mezzanine and the view when sitting up is as crisp and spherical as a telescope out onto the sea, often punctuated by fishing boats gliding through the circle. Make sure to have a snack or supper here at least once – it’s comfort dishes with a dash of English riviera; Otter ale pies by the fire in winter and pints of prawns and Salcombe gin Negronis outdoors in summer. One evening take the steep walk up the slope and turn left into Princes street for award-winning fish and chips at Hanbury’s. Eating in is fine, but best to take away and sit on the benches on the promenade – with the Narnia-style lamps gently dappling light down the cliff, it’s heart-wrenchingly nostalgic.

8. Elmley National Nature Reserve Kent England

Elmley National Nature Reserve, Kent, England

When a whole county has been known as ‘the garden of England ’ for hundreds of years, there are bound to be some pretty jaw-dropping nature spots to be found within it. Elmley Nature Reserve is one of those places. It’s a destination where waking up feels like a total privilege (that’s because it is – roughly 38 people can stay on the whole 3,200-acre site at a time), where a cup of morning coffee has a backdrop that consists of miles of savannah-like marshland and enormous flocks of wildfowl swirling through a soft-pink dawn sky. It gives that pinch-me feeling of being on safari . Located on the Isle of Sheppey just over an hour from London , this fiercely protected piece of land is, unlike many nature reserves in the UK, family-owned, and the Fultons have cleverly diversified the wetlands with a smattering of chic places to stay hidden among the rushes. From teeny cabins with cast-iron radiators, soft wool throws and outdoor showers (Damson has an outdoor bathtub) to dinky but delightful Shepherd’s huts, most of the hideouts are geared towards getting couples to switch off from normal life, and on to each other.

How to get a free hotel upgrade: 5 tips that actually work

Somerset, England

It’s happened so quickly that it’s taken some residents by surprise, but the hamlet of Bruton (and other towns that touch its sides, such as Frome) has become somewhat of a destination for the artsy elite. What started with a world-class gallery on the outskirts of the village (Hauser & Wirth back in 2014) has snowballed into a collection of Japanese- and Scandi-influenced shops, considered places to eat and curated wine bars. And at the heart of all this, just outside of Bruton itself, sits The Newt – a landmark that has probably surprised even itself with how popular it has become less than two years since its launch. But the owners shouldn’t be surprised – they had already achieved this sort of stardom once, back in South Africa with winery and farmstead Babylonstoren. This hulking UK project (hotel, cyder farm, spa, museum, multiple restaurants, a garden drawing in day-trippers) has a very similar sprawling, kick-back, all-welcome feel to it. It’s high-end but utterly unpretentious, a very difficult quality to engineer. New in 2021 is The Farmyard, tucked away in a quiet corner of the land accessed through the cyder orchards, which makes holing up on the estate as a twosome even more attractive.

Book your stay at The Newt

Another more recent opening in the area is Number One Bruton , a sensitively converted Georgian townhouse and a much welcome add-on to restaurant Osip by Merlin Labron-Johnson, one of the youngest British chefs (at 24) to be awarded a Michelin star. This once burgeoning rural corner of England seems to be reaching a crescendo – now is the time to check it out.

10. Hex Cottage Suffolk England

Hex Cottage, Suffolk, England

Lately the phrase off-grid when used in relation to travel has become a tad clichéd, a stock line to describe some far-flung, fantastical island. But this Hansel and Gretel-style cottage is exactly that – it’s got no grid to speak of, it’s entirely electricity free. It’s set in its own wildflower meadow on the Wilderness reserve estate , and its exterior of red bricks, gnarly tree-trunk pillars, thick thatched roof and vivid turquoise-painted door gives a joyful hint of the fun and romance inside. Large storm lamps, pillar candles and a flickering hearth light the way to a cosy, whimsical interior with working antiques (a whistling kettle), gingham curtains next to clouds of deep-red and dusky pink roses and an Esse range cooker heating hot water. The kitchen also has an original bread oven and a butler sink, and there’s a help-yourself herb garden outside and a pair of Pashley bikes propped up against the back door. The lack of artificial light really conjures an intimacy that’s hard to find elsewhere, and makes simple things such as reading or taking a board game off the shelf seem brand new. Although it’s easy to stay put on the reserve and have the Wilderness team bring more firewood, buckets of ice for wine and charcuterie platters, the Suffolk surroundings should be snooped around. There’s the gorgeously retro Pier and golden sands at Southwold, art galleries and music festivals in coastal town Aldeburgh or gin-making at Adnams brewery nearby.

11. Cornwall England

Cornwall, England

It’s no secret that Cornwall has an incredible food scene, and even the most rookie eater has heard of the Dover sole at Rick Stein’s and the hand-dived scallops at Paul Ainsworth’s. But in the past five years a new wave of restaurants has opened, putting down roots that aren’t quite as glossy as the eponymous brasseries. They tend to be headed up by chefs who became fed up with London’s flashy lifestyle, wanting something a little more grounding. Weaving a couple of these treasures into a trip should be a top priority. To start, make a 24-hour stop at Coombeshead Farm , an informal B&B sandwiched between Dartmoor and Bodmin moor. It’s the brainchild of Tom Adams and April Bloomfield and their ultimate goal is to be entirely self-sufficient, with everything on the plate picked, washed and pretty much served there and then (or, like the Mangalitsa bacon, coming from their own animals). There’s not a whiff of fuss in sight but the dishes are assured and inventive. Home-churned butter graces the finest sourdough like cake frosting, the lavender and bergamot soup is a dream, sides to pork or lamb might be bronzed fennel or nettle kraut and there’s honeycomb from the bees for breakfast. Fill the car with loaves and pickles and head to Fitzroy in Fowey for lunch (plump mussels and natural wines) before nipping up to the north coast and checking in at recently opened The Pig at Harlyn Bay (with a similar farm-to-fork ethos). Just next door in Padstow there’s also Prawn on the Lawn, a fishmongers with a small café, run by Londoners Katie and Rick and serving mind-blowingly fresh seafood rolls. A great opportunity to champion the latest rising stars.

12. Adare Manor County Limerick Ireland

Adare Manor, County Limerick, Ireland

Sometimes a hotel is a destination in and of itself, and Adare Manor in Ireland is a fine example of this. This castle/manor house is so gargantuan, both in its size and status, that it gracefully looms over its nearby thatched village (Adare). There are a couple of firsts that set it apart from competitors: La Mer opened its first British Isles spa here and, most recently, The Oak Room became the first Michelin-starred restaurant in the county, where head chef Michael Tweedie works wonders with local ingredients and tarts up Irish classics – his five-spice Thornhill duck has rave reviews. Sommeliers Jonathan and Farrah are absolutely on point too; the beef is best paired with a rich glass of Amarone red. On top of these well-earned credentials, the property sees more than 100 engagement proposals a year from couples the world over (the crowd is so mixed it’s impossible to pinpoint), so it’s fair to say there must be something quite spellbinding about it. Interiors are exceedingly fairy tale: yawning, gothic-style window arches, silk-damask drapery, glittering chandeliers. It’s hard to pick a dud room, but the larger ones are so over-the-top fancy it’s almost a tad overwhelming – a smaller one, both in space and pared-back taste, is our pick.

Book your stay at Adare Manor

13. The Burrow Powys Wales

The Burrow, Powys, Wales

This stone building really does resemble a burrow with its neat carpet of grass gently sloping across the roof and the slender black chimney puffing away. It’s buried into the Bleddfa hills of Powys, an area of Wales where the scenery is softer and more rolling than the jagged Snowdonia mountains. The Burrow is situated on a farm named Dolassey where owners Tom and Amy live, but the land is vast and it’s unlikely you’ll bump into them. The only sounds are the bleating of nosy sheep and the tumbling of water. Although it’s designed for two, it’s spacious; there’s an open-plan living area with bifold doors onto the terrace, a shiny copper bath next to the king-size bed and a double shower in a separate bathroom. The aesthetic is minimal and sophisticated but there are splashes of colour and fun too: dining chairs look like the Sixties school stacking variety, with bright red and blue spindly legs, and there’s a jug bursting with wildflowers next to the little wire welcome hamper. Come dusk, cook on the fire pit outside (or order a ploughman's basket from The Little Welsh Kitchen, which will deliver straight to the door) before jumping into the hot tub for nightfall. The stars scatter across the sky here like a never-ending sheet of sequins, and sometimes the Milky Way is visible.

14. The Private Hill North Yorkshire England

The Private Hill, North Yorkshire, England

As sought-after glamping ventures such as Fforest become ever more crowded (particularly once the post-vaccine boom takes hold this summer) savvy travellers should shift their focus to the new, low-density patches popping up. Unlike other larger sites, The Private Hill in Yorkshire has just four eye-catching domes to stay in, one being set apart a little, so it can deliver the seclusion that a trip like this demands. What’s pleasing is the type of people who stay here clearly aren’t in it for the Insta-points. It’s only had a sprinkling of bookings so far; mostly young, flushed-cheeked locals looking for an understated but memorable way to pop the question, or older couples in weathered camping gear celebrating Ruby anniversaries. Each polar-insulated structure has everything expected in a hotel room rather than a tent: full-size shower, flushing loo and wardrobe, and these practicalities are all layered up nicely with sheepskin throws, battered leather armchairs, patchwork rugs and one giant bed cocooned in Egyptian cotton. Cheery Becci or Jo might already have lit the woodburner before check-in, which is a sweet touch. If the evening weather is balmy, they offer up homely dishes served on your private decking: goat’s cheese tart, steak and apple crumble under a blanket of stars – all for £35 a head.

15. North Norfolk England

North Norfolk, England

The Norfolk Coast Path is where in-the-know visitors come in hushed droves. Devotees tend to swerve Devon and Cornwall , favouring cycling or walking the trails here, as they are a shade less touristy and a notch more varied. Wade through immense shifting sand dunes (great shelter for picnics), skip over tidal creeks, scrunch along shingle beaches and stop off at seaside villages such as Titchwell, away from the main thrum (not forgetting the whipping amber gorse of the often-deserted marshes at Cley and Salthouse). Around five miles away is a l ittle-known rental , its ancient flint walls, heavy oak beams and eccentric curiosities contrasting beautifully with a slick high-spec kitchen and Aesop products. The floor consists of hand-made Norfolk tiles called pamments, the method used to create the clay has been around for centuries and it means no two squares in the blush-pink palette are the same. Yet running underneath is seamless underfloor heating – a perfect example of the thought that has gone into renovating this former gardener’s cottage (it took two years to get everything just so). The sunken concrete bath made with two people in mind is another winning detail. After a soak, take a wander up the road to The Hunworth Bell for a posh burger (Holkham-bred beef, Emmental cheese, brioche bun, skinny fries) and Norwich-brewed beer before stumbling back to a soundtrack of owls hooting.
