Korea Group Tours

With a long history dating back to 2,300 BC, any vacation to South Korea will no doubt feature a number of historical sites, ancient palaces, world heritage sites, food, culture and a trip to the Korean border. While we are well known for our widely popular tours of the DMZ and Seoul tours , we also offer a wide range of Korea group tours to make sure there is something for everyone.

A family posing for a picture with Samul Nori performers on a traditional Korea group tour.

Most people are surprised at what they find when they first visit. From traditional Hanok houses, to huge palaces springing up out of no-where, a diverse food culture and mountains in the middle of cities, to a fast paced, world class, wired country with a booming economy.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed on arrival and not know where to go, what to see or how to begin your adventure.

Which tour should I choose? – Our suggestions for picking the right South Korea group tour

For those visiting Korea for the first time, or just looking for some inspiration when choosing from our selection of group tours we can offer the following suggestions:

A warning sign about landmines at the DMZ

There are a few things that are unique to Korea. But one thing you will not find anywhere else in the world is a border so heavily fortified. Most Korean tours will offer a taste of the past, a step into nature, or a cultural experience, but a DMZ tour is something you can only experience on the Korean peninsula. Its both an enlightening and interesting tour, yet surrounded by an extremely sad part of our history. No visit to Korea can therefore be complete without taking this tour in Korea.

One of our tour groups at Gyeongbok Palace wearing traditional Korean clothes known as Hanbok in Korean

A Nami Island tour is the perfect option for those wishing to step into nature and see the colors of the season. Spring, Winter and Autumn offer the best time of the year to visit. This is a great option for families too, as there are many things for both adults and children to enjoy here.

Tour group taking a ski lesson at Jisan resort in Korea

In winter Korea turns into a winter wonderland and receives a heavy snowfall. With about 70% of our country’s terrain being covered by mountains, it will come as no surprise that locals here love to ski. Our Korea ski tours are very popular and are the number 1 way to enjoy the winter season. It has grown to be such a developed sport, that resorts are super comfortable and cater very well for beginners too, with a good mix of easy to intermediate slopes.

Looking at Seongsan Ilchulbong also known as sunrise peak on Jeju Island

For those who wish to escape the capital, our day trips from Seoul provide the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, while returning to the comfort of your hotel. These tours allow you to venture a little further and see a bit more. There are a range of activities and places to visit located just outside of Seoul’s metropolis.

But if you are looking for the ultimate getaway from the capital, then you should consider an overnight Korea tour package . If you have a little more time on your hands our overnight tours offer a fantastic opportunity to spend sometime in South Korea’s provinces. Try some local dishes from their origins, see the variation in landscape, local customs and traditions.

South Korea is a sought-after tourist destination, blending traditional culture with modern technology and incredible natural beauty. The Asian country is also well known for K-pop and its delicious and unique cuisine. Furthermore, the country has a rich history and cultural heritage that can be seen in its tourist attractions.

One of the most popular places to visit in South Korea is its capital Seoul, which offers a plethora of activities for tourists. They can explore the city’s history at Gyeongbokgung Palace, which was built in the 14th century. They can also walk through the traditional Bukchon Hanok neighborhood, a residential neighborhood with traditional Korean-style houses.

For technology lovers, a visit to Seoul’s N Tower is a must. This tower offers stunning views across the city and is a popular spot for couples. Another tourist attraction in Seoul is Dongdaemun Market, a shopper’s paradise with an array of fashion and technology stores.

Some cities are also frequently visited by tourists, such as Busan, a port city on the southeast coast of South Korea known for its white sand beaches. In addition, the country is famous for having hot springs and spas, where visitors can enjoy hot and cold baths, saunas and relaxing massages.

Top 10 tourist attractions in South Korea

Before we dive into the main topic and discuss tours, we thought it would be nice to introduce some of the most famous tourist attractions in South Korea to help you find tours, itineraries, and activities that align with your interests.

As mentioned earlier, the country is rich in history and culture, with numerous impressive tourist attractions. Below, we have listed the top 10 tourist attractions in South Korea:

  • Han River: The river that runs through the capital of South Korea, Seoul, and its surroundings, offers various recreational activities such as boat rides and walks.

  • N Seoul Tower: An observation tower that offers panoramic views of the bustling capital.
  • Bulguksa Temple: A Buddhist temple located in the city of Gyeongju, known for its breathtaking historical structures and seven national treasures of South Korea.
  • National Museum of Korea: A museum in Seoul that houses a vast collection of historical artifacts. Perfect for those who love to understand a nation’s culture through its history.

Is it better to travel independently or in group tours in South Korea?

Regardless of whether you choose to travel independently or on a group tour in South Korea, both options have their pros and cons.

Opting for independent travel offers greater flexibility to plan a personalized itinerary and choose activities that interest you. It also gives you the autonomy to decide when and how to engage in these activities, allowing you to explore the country at your own pace. Cost-effectiveness can also be a positive factor, as this option can be more affordable depending on the choices made.

However, independent travel requires detailed planning, including research on accommodation, transportation, and activities, which can be time-consuming and demanding. Additionally, communication may become a challenge if you are not proficient in Korean, and there are greater safety risks , especially in more remote areas.

On the other hand, a group tour with a guide offers companionship and is a great opportunity to meet people with similar interests. It is also easier and safer to travel in a group, especially when accompanied by a local guide who is well-versed in South Korea. However, this option may limit the freedom to explore the country more independently, as you will be restricted to pre-established schedules and activities set by the group.

In summary, the choice depends on personal preferences. Both options have advantages and disadvantages, and it is necessary to evaluate which one is the best fit for you and your travel style.

If you decide to travel independently, you can check out our articles with tips on 13 Places to Visit in South Korea Beyond Seoul.

Why Travel Solo to South Korea?

Compact, quirky and still intriguingly unexplored, every corner of this East Asian nation unveils a new adventure. Delve into the hi-tech cities, otherworldly temples and super-friendly culture as part of a group tour to South Korea for solo travellers.

With oscar-winning films, Netflix dramas and K-pop megastars exploding onto our screens in recent years, interest in South Korea has skyrocketed. From the cool capital, Seoul, to the bustling southern port city of Busan, you can take forays to any number of incredible places – like the ancient royal tombs of Gyeongju, the healing forests of Jeju or the fascinating Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) – within just a couple of hours.

Throw in some stellar mountain scenery, mouth-watering street food and a unique take on karaoke and you’ve got yourself a diverse country bursting with personality. The word is officially out – and now is the time to visit.

Top places to visit in South Korea

Home to half the country’s population, the hi-tech capital retains a traditional character. Ancient palaces sit beneath towering skyscrapers, Buddhist temples are dwarfed by gleaming shopping malls and sprawling street markets are served by the cutting-edge subway.

On the southern tip of the Korean peninsula, this laidback port city is famed for its gorgeous beaches, seafood market and international film festival. Don’t miss the neighbourhood of Gamcheon with its tumble of brightly painted houses against a backdrop of forested mountains.

Chock full of tombs, palaces, rock carvings and pagodas, the ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom is a treasure trove of cultural sites, a ‘museum without walls’. Dine like a king over a traditional 12-course meal and stay in an authentic hanok for a truly local experience.

A subtropical island with a pristine volcanic landscape, Jeju is South Korea’s answer to Hawaii. Climb to the rims of ancient craters to watch the sunrise, explore lava caves and rocky coastlines, and switch off from modern life in the peaceful healing forests.

Learn more about South Korea

Geograhy and environment.

South Korea is located at the south end of the Korean Peninsula, between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. Separated from   Japan   by the Korean Strait and demarcated from the state of North Korea by Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), South Korea's terrain is a mix of flat lowlands and forested mountains. The coasts of South Korea are rocky and jagged, with thousands of islands (mostly inhabitable) scattered off the coastline.

Culture and customs

South Korea draws some traditions and customs from other neighbouring countries in Asia with a culture that stems from Confucianism. This system of philosophical and ethical teachings was introduced to South Korea in the 4 th century through Chinese scholars and was quickly embraced by the wider population until it officially became the state ideology in the early 1900s.

Confucianism emphasises respect for aging, elders and ancestors, an intrinsic hierarchy that runs through work and social life, and upholds traditional family roles so you’ll often see families living together in one house.

During your travels around South Korea, you’ll also see plenty of traditions such as the act of bowing when greeting people, women wearing traditional dress (hanbok) and the practice of taekwondo (Korean martial arts). As well as ancient beliefs, new generations of South Koreans are embracing a modernised culture, one full of K-pop, Korean cosmetics and popular foods like kimchi and tteokbokki.

History and government

South Korea’s had an often turbulent history dating back to around 8000 BC when it was known as just Korea, but the country’s most impactful conflict began in the 1500s with the attempted Japanese invasion. Korea went on to become a Japanese colony in 1910 following its annexation of the Korean Empire, which ended in 1945 at the conclusion of World War II.

The country was then divided into two parts, the northern part which was protected by the Soviet Union and the southern part which was protected largely by the United States. Both the northern and southern parts of Korea officially became North and South Korea in 1948 when the two regions failed to agree on forming one, united government.

In 1950, North Korea set in motion the Korean War which was intended to unify the two countries under communism. But after much destruction to infrastructure and loss of human life, a cease-fire was called in 1953 with both countries signing the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement. The two countries have since agreed to work towards a final settlement (The Peace Treaty on the Korean Peninsula) to formally and officially end the Korean War.

South Korea now enjoys a fully prosperous economy with a similar capital economic standing to countries such as the United States, Japan and various countries in Western Europe.

You can’t go to South Korea for shopping and not stop in Seoul – the country’s premier destination for all things fashion, electronics, street food and skincare. In this shopper’s paradise of a city, you’ll find traditional Korean items perfect for souvenirs to tech gadgets not yet available on Australia’s shores.

Some notable districts/destinations where you can shop ‘til you drop include:

  • Myeongdong (shopping district)
  • Dongdaemun Market (shopping centre)
  • Cheongdam-dong (luxury boutique area)
  • Pyeonghwa (wholesale market)

Top 5 culinary delicacies of South Korea

1. bibimbap.

As one of Korea's standout dishes, bibimbap is a tasty concoction of meat, vegetables, egg and rice. Soy sauce, chilli paste, garlic and sesame oil all add flavour to this amazingly colourful dish found everywhere in Korea.

Kimchi is hailed as a nutritional powerhouse - packing a healthy punch of nutrients, vitamins and beneficial bacteria that makes it one of the world's healthiest superfoods. But most people don't eat these fermented vegetables for health reasons - it's the uniquely, tasty flavour and versatility that makes kimchi so popular in Korean cooking.

These delicious, savoury pancakes are a standard of Korean cuisine. With hundreds of different varieties, jeon can be served with red meat, chicken, seafood, vegetables, tofu and even edible flowers.

Similar to sushi, these highly popular rice-based morsels feature fish, beef or crab, wrapped in seaweed with pickled or fresh vegetables. Available all over Korea, they are the perfect snack on the run or quick, cheap lunch to enjoy between sightseeing.

Arriving in Korea by the way of Mongolia, mandu are essentially boiled, steamed or pan-fried dumplings. A cheap, street food favourite, mandu can be filled with everything from pheasant to tofu, cucumber, beef and beyond.

Try out these foods on our 8 day South Korea Real Food Adventure.

The maximum group size on our South Korean Express group tour is 24, though groups tend to be smaller than this. You'll find a real mix of ages on our trips, from those in their late 20s to those in their early 70s. The average age is between 45-50 years. Our tours attract families, friends, and those travelling solo too, so there's a good chance you'll make new friends for life on tour!

What is the standard of accommodation on your trips?

When is the best time to visit?

The Korean peninsula is a year-round destination, and you are sure to have a fantastic trip, whenever you visit! If joining a South Korea tour in spring from March - May, then you will be able to enjoy the beautiful pink cherry blossoms which envelop the country. Is South Korea a safe destination for travellers from the LGBTQ+ community?

According to the 2022 LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index , South Korea scores a D+ rating for LGBTQ+ traveller safety, ranking 74th out of 203 countries. Same sex marriage isn’t legal but there are broad constitutional and some worker protections in place for people of all sexual orientations. 26 – 50% of consulted citizens consider South Korea a good place to live for gay and lesbian people. There are no legal punishments for same sex relations and most trips for LGBTQ+ travellers to South Korea are trouble-free. The LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index is designed to provide a good overall picture of attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community in each country and may not reflect the experience of foreign travellers to the country.

Can I drink the tap water?

The tap water is safe to drink, so you are encouraged to bring along a reusable water bottle on your South Korea tour to save money and cut down on your environmental impact. In some parts of the country, the tap water can smell slightly. If you choose to drink bottled water then this is readily available, but the tap water is still safe and can be used for activities such as brushing your teeth.

Three months have passed since China lifted its ban on group tours to Korea, but the economic effects of Chinese tourists, formerly seen as big spenders traveling in large groups, are failing to meet the industry’s hopes of market revitalization.

The decrease is due to the new travel trend, where Chinese tourists now prefer solo travel or small group travel over big group tours and seek themed itineraries, according to tourism experts.

According to the Korea Tourism Organization’s statistics, the number of Chinese travelers to Korea amounted to 523,599 between August and September this year, which is almost a nine-fold increase from last year’s 59,779 figure from the same period.

The sudden jump in the figure is due to the Chinese government’s lifting of the ban on group tours to Korea, caused by frayed relations following the deployment of a U.S. missile defense system here.

The ban ended in August, raising hopes of a post-pandemic return of Chinese group tours, which previously accounted for the lion’s share of inbound tourists and industry sales.

Despite the dramatic increase in the number of tourists, the economic effects are failing to meet expectations. According to the data by the Korean Duty Free Association, the turnover from foreign travelers buying duty-free products mounted to 1.08 trillion won ($ 1,385 million) in September this year, which is 34.6 percent less than 1.65 trillion won from the same period last year.

The Shilla Duty Free Shop, one of the key players in the country’s duty-free market, also said it saw a 16.3 billion won loss in the third quarter this year, while LG Household and Health Care and AmorePacific both saw their operating profits down 32.4 percent and 8.2 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, supermarkets and convenience stores, which had been overlooked as Chinese tourists’ main venues of spending, saw growing sales.

According to BC Institute of Innovative Finance’s latest analysis, the share of duty-free shopping in charge card sales from Chinese travelers in Korea nearly halved to 35.9 percent from 2019’s 63.1 percent as of September this year.

Card sales from supermarkets, on the other hand, saw a dramatic jump from 1.3 percent to 3.8 percent in the same period, while card sales at convenience stores also increased from 1.1 percent to 1.5 percent.

The data reflects the changing trend among young Chinese tourists to prefer independent traveling over group tours, which tend to include shopping programs at duty free and department stores, according to the report and tourism experts.

BTS’s ARMY to mobilize against HYBE to protect group amid ADOR spat

A RMY members wait in line to visit BTS's pop-up store ″Monochrome,″ currently located in Seongdong District, eastern Seoul, through May 12.

Some 70 members of ARMY, the devoted fandom of BTS, plan to participate in shareholder activism against HYBE to press for stronger measures to shield the boy band from proliferating rumors and speculation.

The group comprises minority shareholders in Korea who acquired shares of the label out of loyalty to BTS. However, the members have claimed that HYBE takes a passive approach to protecting the band from rumors sparked by ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin’s public spat with her label’s parent company in which she publicly criticized HYBE’s management practices and its multi-label system.

BTS, as the iconic K-pop act and largest contributor to HYBE’s success as a genre powerhouse, became embroiled in rampant speculation. The group's label BigHit Music, formerly Big Hit Entertainment, was accused of rigging music charts and album sales in 2017 while promoting the band. Rumors have also spread that the label is linked to a meditation company, Dahn World, widely speculated to be a cult.

BigHit denied both claims, but the ARMY shareholders want HYBE to more actively protect the artists and communicate with the fandom. They will utilize a separate online platform consisting of minority shareholders to send a letter to the agency with their demands. Moreover, they plan to leverage their shareholder proposal rights during the shareholders’ meeting upon securing a 1 percent stake, the threshold for the right to suggest agenda items to the board of directors.

“Each quarter, the agency posts notices about ongoing legal measures, but without detailed information on who received what penalties or the current status of proceedings,” an X user within the activist group told the Hankyoreh, a local newspaper. “Thus, fans remain in the dark about the company’s legal actions."

“Amid the ongoing management dispute, various rumors regarding BTS have surfaced, but the agency has yet not released a statement with specific clarification, therefore exacerbating the situation.”

The ARMY fandom has also initiated protests to voice their opinions to HYBE from last week, publishing full-page advertisements in local newspapers and sending wreaths of flowers adorned with messages disparaging HYBE’s management to the company’s headquarters in Yongsan District, central Seoul.

Global fans are taking their demonstration online, uploading posts with the hashtag “South Korea apologize to BTS” after news broke that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism ordered an investigation into the alleged chart-rigging practice from 2017.
