The bespoke travel company we trust

katie terrington travel

In days gone by we might have gone to a travel agent when deciding on a special holiday; today it’s more about doing a bit of online research, and then taking a gamble. But if you’re after some bespoke advice – say the best time of year to visit the gorillas in Uganda, or how to do a trip-of-lifetime to India as a family, then it helps to have an expert to call upon. Enter, Katie Terrington, founder of Katie Terrington Private Travel, who properly knows her stuff, having worked in the luxury travel industry for nearly a decade (formerly at Original Travel). Honeymoons, wellness retreats, skiing holidays, adventure trips – Katie can call on her extensive little black book of contacts to offer you the most special travel experiences. These might include going inside(!) a volcano in Iceland or barefoot horseback riding with a local llanero cowboy in Colombia.

In particular, we’re fans of her focus on sustainability; Katie only works with hotels, lodges, guides, and suppliers who share her environmentally responsible ethos. For example, she might recommend Shinta Mani Wild – the new tented camp by Bill Bensley in Cambodia where the project provides management and care for an unprotected wildlife corridor and works with conservation teams and community outreach programs in the South Cardamom National Park. The whole focus is on the natural surroundings; luxury tents perch above the river, the Boulder Spa’s two treatment rooms are nestled amid giant natural rocks, and you arrive by zip wire – yes really!

When organising a trip, clients can be as hands-on as they like; some prefer to specify a budget and leave the details to Katie, others like to be more involved along the way. Prices start from £5000 a week for two people to allow for top hotels and experiences. Call Katie or email to set up a meeting and start planning your special holiday.

Your stories: Katie Terrington, The Conscious Travel Foundation

katie terrington travel

Katie Terrington has always had an interest in sustainable travel, but lockdown gave her the drive to take it a step further.

The travel agent, who owns Katie Terrington Private Travel, launched a sustainable social enterprise called The Conscious Travel Foundation in May together with four industry colleagues – Amy Welfare of AW Private Travel, Joro Experience’s Henry Comyn, Georgina Coke of By Georgie and Olivia Cryer of Olivia Cryer Communications.

The platform, which is now open to member applications, aims to bring small, sustainably-minded travel businesses together to pool knowledge, raise money for grassroots charity projects and promote travel as a force for good.

“The founders all started speaking back in March when we were all in lockdown,” Terrington says.

“We were discussing what we could do to help support the incredible initiatives so many of our travel partners usually support through tourism but who were losing money for the projects they were so passionate about.

“Ultimately, as the world stood still, we couldn’t ignore the questions that kept coming up around sustainability, diversity and better work practices.

“These are all areas the founders of The Conscious Travel Foundation want to explore further, and we saw the need for a platform for smaller companies who could learn collectively, helping to make travel a force for good when we emerge from the pandemic.”

Members of The Conscious Travel Foundation receive mentorship from sustainable travel experts like Charlie Carlow, founder and owner of luxury Australian travel agency Alquemie, and Portia Hart, owner of eco-luxury beach club Blue Apple in Cartagena, Colombia.

Members also abide by a ‘sustainability code’. Its pledges include working with suppliers that have a clear policy on sustainability and, where possible, local owner-run businesses; ensuring clients’ trips are fully carbon-offset through an accredited scheme; and working towards eliminating single-use plastic from all trips and offices.

All of The Conscious Travel Foundation’s fundraising proceeds and membership fees are also donated to projects and charities around the world directly impacted by the tourism industry.

Membership of The Conscious Travel Foundation opened this month to owner-operated travel firms with up to nine staff.

After welcoming a small number of agents initially, The Conscious Travel Foundation hopes to extend membership to hotels, lodges and destination management companies.

“The response since launching has been really great,” Terrington says.

“There’s been lots of interest from the industry, with loads of support and a number of people who already want to join in. It can be hard as a small company sometimes to know what to do and how to make an impact. As a collective, we hope to do this.”

Sustainable Travel

Booking a sustainable trip? These are the all-important questions to ask a travel agent to ensure a greener getaway

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Any company can slap a little green leaf on their website. If we really want to travel more sustainably, it's up to us to go deeper and ask more difficult questions to hold our hosts to account. They won’t always know the answers — which in itself tells you something about their eco credentials — but more importantly it could prompt them to do better as a business when it comes to environmental, social and economic impact. We asked some of the industry’s smartest operators to give us a guide on what to ask and why it matters.

1. How do you try to make sure money stays in local pockets?

Bruce Poon-Tip, founder of G Adventures

Why it matters: “The easiest and best way to ensure money stays in a destination is to do your research; find out where your money is going in the places you are visiting and ensure local people are benefiting. As the pioneers of community tourism, G Adventures offers a ‘ripple score’, which is designed to provide transparency around the local economic impact of a tour, but it does not reflect the quality of the on-trip experience — the more local operation costs stay locally, the better the ripple effect in those communities and the greater the ripple score. A score of 100 means that all of the services we have used to create that specific tour are locally owned. We also have more than 100 community tourism projects built into our trips around the world that directly benefit local people.”

2. The question: Can you recommend an itinerary that allows me to travel abroad without flying?

Cat Jones, founder of train travel specialist Byway

Why this matters: “Flying less is one of the most impactful things we can do as individuals for the climate. Not only does choosing to travel by train instead of plane cut CO2 emissions per passenger by up to 90 per cent, it also makes for a really joyful way to travel! You experience scenic journeys (perhaps even from a bed on an overnight train), enrich your holiday by staying in more than one place and support local economies by choosing routes away from over-touristed airport hubs. The hurdle many face when considering flight-free travel is the initial uncertainty (Where to go? Which route? What to do? Which tickets?). That’s why this question matters — it’s tough to know where to start! If your agent doesn’t have flight-free options, perhaps let them know that Byway can help. Partnering in this way helps us to empower the travel industry to bring flight-free into the mainstream, making it easier for people to travel more sustainably. We want people to feel encouraged to dive in and enjoy holidays by rail — for the planet and because it’s a richer way to travel. At Byway we make it easy to go flight-free, with personalised trips by rail, boat and bus that also include accommodation as a protected package. Our trip-building technology powers flight-free planning and booking for partner, too, so we can easily work with agents such as Kuoni, Intrepid and Exodus, where we provide out-and-back flight-free journeys to already-booked tours.”

FRANCE-TRANSPORT-TRAIN

3. The question: How does your company work with local businesses to help ensure you’re supporting the destination you’re visiting?

Jonny Bealby, founder of Wild Frontiers

Why it matters: “As a tour operator, you can’t create and support responsible and sustainable forms of tourism without understanding the needs and challenges on the ground, which can differ hugely from country to country. It's vital for us that we communicate very closely with our global partners who are essentially the eyes and ears on the ground. It is through those partners, in addition to our own time spent in each of our destinations, that we are able to develop strong and effective local initiatives and projects, which not only enable us to offer great trips to our clients but also support the communities we visit. Look out for companies that have an ethos like this, which is key to our Wild Frontiers Foundation which we established to create further awareness and deliver additional funding to projects within the destinations we visit.”

4. The question: As an operator, how are you collaborating with the wider travel industry to affect change?

Justin Wateridge, founder of Steppes Travel

Why it matters: “Collaboration is hard — we have to share more. We have to work together. Look into what a company is doing to raise your awareness of issues and how much is advocacy a part of the company’s vision to create a greener, more biodiverse planet. Is it lobbying for a ‘green flying duty’, for example — this is a version of the existing UK air passenger duty which would put an end to the tax break given to aviation, and reduce demand for flying with higher prices, with revenues ring-fenced for investment into sustainable versions of aviation and other ways to decarbonise air travel. It would make short-haul a lot less appealing, and make first class proportionately more costly.”

Justin Wateridge, Steppes Travel

5. The question: Are you or are you able to book me to stay at or to travel with a B Corp travel business?

Thomas Power, founder of Pura Aventura

Why this matters: “A company that has been satisfactorily assessed to be a B Corp is legally committed to doing business in a more ethical way — and it’s a simple way for a consumer to identify a company which has considered its environmental and social impact. There are so many labels, badges and promises that it's easy to get overwhelmed. Honestly, I feel sorry for consumers who want to have a wonderful holiday rather than take on a load of homework! That's why I suggest they ask their agents about B Corp businesses. We are a member of Travel By B Corp — a group of B Corp-certified companies in the UK covering everything from self-catering houses, hotels and holiday parks on our shores to adventures in far-flung places thanks to members including Intrepid Travel and Sawday’s. The more holidaymakers who are aware of this badge the better, and it sparks discussion around the values."

6. The question: Can you help me ensure my money goes beyond my hotel stay and impacts the local community?

Jessica Blotter, co-founder of Kind Traveler

Why it matters: "97 per cent of travellers want their travel dollars to positively impact the communities they visit, according to our 2022 Kind Traveler Impact Tourism Report, and with our Every Stay Gives Back programme, every guest stay with participating hotels mobilises funding for local charities connected to destination wellbeing, regardless of where the booking originates. Hotels can easily communicate and celebrate the measurable positive impact of their efforts through a QR code and live community impact report. As an example, The Stavrand, a boutique, woman-owned hotel in Sonoma County, California, has designated Farm to Pantry as its local beneficiary and has already mobilised 3,184 servings of Sonoma County-grown fruits and veggies to marginalised families while also solving food waste issues, and has saved the emissions equivalent of taking 79 cars off the road for one day.”

Sonoma County, Kind Traveler

7. The question: What do you look for when booking sustainable accommodation?

James Jayasundera, founder of Ampersand Travel

Why this matters: “I think a sensitivity to nature and the local culture, from style of architecture to being in harmony with nature, the location and the community, is key. Travel companies need to be teaching locals to take pride in what they have. Encourage them to be more caring: stop polluting, host clean-up operations and develop an appreciation among locals for what is local. You want to ask your agent how they are supporting businesses that think in this way.”

James Jayasundera, Ampersand Travel

8. The question: Are you recommending this trip as a salesperson or can you genuinely speak to its sustainability credentials?

Byron Thomas, founding MD of Niarra Travel

Why it matters: “There’s a big difference between a trained and certified travel advisor – our team are all GSTC certified travel researchers– recommending the most sustainable trip available for your dates and the salesperson who’s proposing the one for which the supplier has given them an eco-enough suggestion but more than anything, a nice commission. In tour operating, which most people use to book high-end safaris, up to 35 per cent of the room rate will not reach the local folks on the ground. It's important to ask for transparency around financials/commission structure if they are serious about supporting the communities and conservation efforts that the trips are all about."

9. The question: If I want a honeymoon that is unique, away from mass tourism and all-inclusive offerings, what can you do to encourage a more authentic experience?

Katie Terrington, founder of Katie Terrington Private Travel and member of The Conscious Travel Foundation

Why this matters: "Rather than looking for a two-week, all-inclusive beach break, honeymooners are increasingly requesting to spend their precious time discovering destinations slowly, learning about cultures, staying in off-grid properties, learning something new, having specialist local guides and delving deeper into the destination. As an independent travel designer it is incredibly important that I work alongside a carefully curated selection of hotels, lodges, local guides and other local partners who can help me create these experiences. Rather than booking with large wholesalers that are driving local properties for increased commissions, have standardised excursions and tend to focus on booking larger properties, I actively seek out partners who are smaller, more creative, work closely alongside their communities, are engaged with conservation and who partner with a plethora of incredible local suppliers."

Agents celebrate virtuoso award for the conscious travel foundation.

Two luxury agents behind the non-profit travel community the Conscious Travel Foundation have spoken of their pride at being recognised in the Virtuoso Travel Week 2022 Luminaries, Legends and Leaders Awards.

eCard

As Virtuoso members, 360 Private Travel partners Katie Terrington and Amy Welfare received the Protecting the Planet Award at the ceremony in Las Vegas in August. The duo helped establish the Conscious Travel Foundation in 2020 with three other travel experts, as a non-profit global community of travel industry professionals.

The pair said they were “really thrilled” that the work of the Foundation had been recognised by Virtuoso.

They added: “We see the Virtuoso Award as a huge team effort from all the founders of the Conscious Travel Foundation, our members, and our panel of experts. We have been working hard over the last two years to build our thriving community, with members from all over the world, hailing from all different parts of the industry.”

Terrington and Welfare said the Foundation hopes to continue to welcome other travel businesses who “want to be a part of the necessary evolution of our industry.” They continued: “We aim to constantly develop our education programme, connect the good people in our industry striving for positive change, and grow our charitable fund, donating to grass-roots projects around the world.

“We believe our work is more important than ever to ensure that as an industry, we do not return to ‘business as usual’ without regard for sustainable, positive-impact practices on people and planet.”

The Conscious Travel Foundation founders (pictured) hail from across the travel industry

The foundation aims to positively influence a shift in industry practice, ignite change and safeguard the planet for future generations, through education, collaboration and fundraising. It currently has 53 members, who are listed at theconscioustravelfoundation.com .

360 Private Travel chief executive James Turner said the business was proud to support the foundation, adding: “The Conscious Travel Foundation really evolved throughout the pandemic during our industry’s most difficult times. It has been a silver lining that exemplifies how the team were able to prevail and make positive change when the world was at a standstill.”

Why whisky & bourbon lovers should try this new cognac.

Martingale Cognac

Martingale Cognac debuted in 2023, hailing from a family with a storied history of making Cognac for some of the most prestigious houses in the region. Yet, despite the century of making traditional brandy for others, this new offering landed on the world stage with a distinctly unique and original flavor profile. Martingale Founder Guillaume Thomas along with Co-Founders Amaury Thomas and Andrew Weir worked with a series of blends and expressions over the course of three years to bring a spirit with a fresher, fragrant, more refined profile to the category. Yet Weir, who has decades of experience in the Scotch whisky industry, is careful to note that their intention was to augment the Cognac category, not disrupt it.

Thomas, who left his position as CFO of Pernod Ricard North America to start the brand, notes, “Cognac has been pigeonholed in a way, partly because of its success. In terms of taste profile, occasion and consumers, no disrespect to other Cognac brands—I love them, but they have made Cognac dark, dense, rich and complex which is enjoyable. We thought that there was a way to create a liquid that would be a lot fresher. We wanted to make an offering in a much lighter and smooth profile. I love Japanese whisky and I wanted to impart that same refined elegant aspects you get in something like Japanese whisky.”

If anyone was going to experiment with a new style, it makes sense that it would be the Thomas family. As one of the region’s largest producers they’ve produced Cognac for many other prestigious brands, but they’ve never bottled a spirit under their name. Says Thomas, “In Cognac there are distillers, grape growers and those that age the eau de vie. Very few producers do all three things, but we do all three.” They have one of the region’s largest vineyards and one of the largest distilleries, and they have their own warehouses and aged inventory. In Cognac it is quite uncommon for a brand to do it all—growing grapes, distilling, and aging. Thomas argues that because they maintain control over every aspect of production they are better able to control quality and avoid “standardization”—which is a polite term for adding ingredients to achieve a specific flavor or appearance.

Martingale Double Down cocktail

Explains Thomas, “Standardization happens in this industry in order to conform with the notion that Cognac has to be dark. This is typically done with additives like boise .” Boise is a kind of wood tea that is used impart color and tannin. “When you have complete control from what you put in the soil to grow the grapes to what you put in the bottle you don’t need to rely on additives.”

Google Issues ‘Critical’ Chrome Update For All Windows Users

New ios 18 ai security move changes the game for all iphone users, world war i tactics make a comeback as a ukrainian gunner in the back of a propeller plane shoots down a russian drone.

The consumer response has been illuminating. Says Weir, who often pours it for his whisky-loving customers, “People taste it and are quite surprised. It’s not at all what they expected, and it is challenging connoisseurs to reevaluate their views on the entire category.” Thomas adds that the brand name Martingale refers to a French word that means “finding your recipe for success,” a tribute to his grandfather who, after World War II, converted farmland into a successful distillery. “It’s important to find your martingale in life. No matter how old you are. That’s why we choose the name.”

Martingale’s aromatics are clean and fresh—it has a fruity (think apple and pear), botanical aromatic profile with spice notes on the palate. Thomas likes to sip his, with a small amount of ice to bring out even more of the aromas and flavors. Yet, he and Weir also make the case for using it in cocktails—specifically a Side Car and the company favorite: The Double Down.
