The debate around Gojira's merch prices are a stark indicator of what it means to be a touring band in 2023

Gojira are on their biggest-ever tour of the UK right now, and their merch prices have got fans talking. But it's what's needed to be a band on the road in 2023.

A Photo of Gojira alongside their current merch prices

Gojira have just kicked off the UK leg of their huge European tour alongside Alien Weaponry and Employed To Serve . A string of dates that have been a long time coming, previously scheduled to take place back at the start of 2022, they have also kickstarted a discussion online. Because of the band's merch prices. Twitter user @_chrisjones_  posted a photo from the merch desk at the band's show at Belfast's Ulster Hall on February 12, first stating, " 40 quid for a standard t-shirt at the Gojira gig tonight. I know times are tough for touring bands but bloody hell. Ulster Hall taking a large cut, I'm thinking."

40 quid for a standard t-shirt at the Gojira gig tonight. I know times are tough for touring bands but bloody hell. Ulster Hall taking a large cut, I'm thinking. February 12, 2023

Products that are available range from the aforementioned t-shirt for £40 to £50 for a longsleeve and £80 for a hoodie, all the way up to signed vinyl for £80 and art prints for £100. The conversation that has been instigated by this photo is fascinating, to say the least. On one hand, there are reactions such as, "Oh hell no. £25 tee is standard. £30 too much. £40 is mad " and, "That’s insane", but on the other, fans are also saying, "This is honestly pretty standard for large touring acts these days" and, "Because rising costs of touring don't apply to more well-known bands. These are absolutely standard prices in today's economic climate." One person has even noted that The Cure were selling their t-shirts on their recent tour for half the price at £20. You can check out the whole conversation below:

Feast your eyes. pic.twitter.com/53lw6pEIJ4 February 12, 2023

The truth of the matter is that touring in 2023 is completely different to any other time that bands have been able to go out on the road. Firstly, this particular tour was rescheduled a whole 12 months later by the band because, as they stated, "Despite our best efforts to resume touring this month, the continued uncertainty in various territories has left us with no other choice but to reschedule the remaining dates of the tour as well." Changing a whole touring schedule doesn't come easy or cheap, on both the pockets and the mind. Additionally, the cost of living has gone up considerably in those 12 months as well. Things that would have been easily taken care of and a certainty before are now up in the air and a constant worry. All of that is heightened when you have to go out on the road for a living. And that's not just the band. That's crew, management, transport, everybody who is associated with Gojira on this tour is affected. Merchandise is the only way that a band is able to even consider breaking even in this climate, summed up perfectly by Stray From The Path's Craig Reynolds. You can check out his full thread on the subject below:

ZERO chance that gojira prints on unsustainable merchandise. the cost for certified sustainable cotton blanks is far, FAR more than a normal shirt. even if this wasn’t the case: merch cut, manager cut, possible label cut, pay the designer, merch company: split what’s left 4 ways https://t.co/fyraE57IYl February 13, 2023

And what happens if your favourite band doesn't make money on the road? They could come to your town, play a show and leave worse off than when they arrived. That's not sustainable in any way, is it? And if that happens, then touring may have to stop completely. This affects absolutely everyone. It's not an isolated case. The next gig that you go to may have the same price list. And the truth of the matter is that if you can afford to support a band, then you should do so. But at the same time, if you can't, then you can't. Here are the remaining dates on the band's tour:

Gojira – Fortitude UK Tour – Alexandra Palace, London

Live Review: Gojira – Fortitude UK Tour – Alexandra Palace, London

Posted On: March 1, 2023 | Reviewed By Fraser Kerr

Who? Where? When?

At alexandra palace, london on the 22/02/2023., supported by alien weaponry, and employed to serve..

French metal legends Gojira recently headed over to the UK for a six date run of shows as a part of their ‘Fortitude’ European tour. We headed down to the final UK show at London’s Alexandra Palace, here’s what went down.

As Employed To Serve took to the stage, the partially filled Alexandra Palace erupted in excitement. Right off the first note from ‘Universal Chokehold’, mosh pits started opening up and it was clear that it was going to be the start of the first bit of chaos for the night. Their ‘Conquering’ heavy set went down well with the crowd – enticing lots of crowd surfers throughout – emanating in a massive reaction to the bands final song ‘Mark Of The Grave’.

Hailing from New Zealand, Alien Weaponry were next to grace the stage, and not forgetting their Kiwi heritage the band’s drummer entered the stage performing the Haka. The band’s unique Thrash Metal stylings along with the constant encouragement of crowd participation evoked a lot of movement in the crowd. While the set saw far fewer crowdsurfers than Employed To Serve before them the pits seemed to grow ever larger. Their set went down well with the London hoards, who I’m sure will be hoping for a headline run of shows from the band in the near future.

The packed out Alexandra Palace was energised and ready as the projected 180 second countdown began – with the crowd giving a little cheer when it clicked over to 69. The energy in the room reached a tipping point as the audience exploded into the first song ‘Born For One Thing’ upon the curtain drop. ‘The Heaviest Matter of the Universe’ and ‘Backbone’ quickly followed as both band and fans warmed into the chaos that was unfolding, before fan favourites ‘Stranded’ and ‘Flying Whale’ provided an extra kick of energy early on in the set.

These songs would be the first of the well curated set that celebrated the band’s seventh studio album ‘Fortitude’, whilst also looking back at some of the band’s immense back catalogue as well. One of the standout moments of the night came in the form of a drum solo from Mario Duplantier, who captivated the crowd as he commanded cheers in return.

As the night drew to a close, the band returned to the stage for a three song encore, with ‘Silvera’, ‘New Found’, and ‘The Gift of Guilt’ sending the crowd into one final spin of chaos before they would inevitably have to head home.

With Gojira nearing their 30th year in the metal scene, their show at Alexandra Palace is a clear example as to why they’re still playing to some of the biggest metal crowds across Europe. Their musicianship is still very much on point and whilst the lack of pyro let this show down slightly, the band do still know how to command a crowd and get every last ounce of energy out of them.

Here’s Gojira’s UK and Ireland tour setlist

The heaviest setlist in the universe! Gojira brought the riffs and more to the first night of their UK and Ireland tour…

Here’s Gojira’s UK and Ireland tour setlist

Last night, the French metal masters Gojira kicked off their tour of the UK and Ireland in powerful fashion. Storming into the National Stadium in Dublin for their first Irish gig since 2017, the progressive heavyweights more than made up for their extended time away with a setlist of 16 absolute monsters.

Leaning into 2021's Fortitude LP, opening on Born For One Thing and closing on Amazonia with a handful of new favourites in between, Gojira also debuted their brand-new track Our Time Is Now . But the Ondres rifflords also brought back some classics, belting out The Way Of All Flesh for the first time since 2009 and The Art Of Dying for the first time since 2016.

If you're heading to Gojira's headline tour of the UK and Ireland this month, here's what's in store...

GIG REVIEW: Gojira

Welcome to UK Music Reviews » GIG REVIEW: Gojira

gojira tour uk 2023

Gojira performing their Fortitude Tour at The Motorpoint Arena Nottingham on Tuesday 21st February 2023

Images and Review by Kevin Cooper

Gojira’s Motorpoint Arena gig has been on the calendar for a long time, having been originally earmarked for 2021. And on Tuesday night, the French metal band finally made it.

Considered one of the most captivating live bands in the heavy metal scene their set began with drummer Mario Duplantier sat behind his massive kit, encased in dry ice. And when they kicked into the opening chords to Born For One Thing, the first song from their latest album, Fortitude, the crowd were already familiar with the words and belted them out. The Heaviest Matter Of The Universe is always a fans favourite with its thundering drums and crashing riffs and did not disappoint as the crowd moshed and head banged as though their lives depended upon it.

With Mario being a veritable powerhouse, hitting his drums with incredible force and precision, Jean-Michel Labadie and Christian Andreu’s guitar work was equally impressive whilst front man Joe Duplantier brought a soulful intensity with his vocals, the lyrics often focusing upon environmentalism and social justice, which serve to add an extra layer of meaning and purpose to the band’s music.

The crowd were ecstatic to hear long time classics such as Backbone and the title track from 2012’s L’Enfant Sauvage and when one of their most well known songs, Flying Whales was given an airing, the crowd went wild.

For the ten minute epic, The Art Of Dying, there was the obligatory mosh pit before the main set was closed with new songs The Chant and Amazonia that had the crowd singing along, before Silvera, New Found and The Gift Of Guilt closed out the show.

Delivering a blend of brutal heavy riffs, complex drumming and soaring melodies, Gorjira had been in top form, delivering an electrifying performance that had the crowd euphoric.

Hailing from Bayonne, France, Gojira are a French metal band who blend elements of progressive, death, thrash and math metal to create their eclectic and unpredictable sound.

Influenced by the likes of Pantera, Slayer, Neurosis, Sepultra and Meshuggah, Gojira create a technical but highly rhythmic style of heavy metal, with complex rhythm patterns and unusual structures that are held together through a groove that permeates through their tracks. Whilst aggressive, their sound still has a melodic effect through the varying vocal style, with their lyrics often focussing on their environmental activism, with the band themselves cooperating with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to raise awareness for the protection of marine life.

Forming in 1996 and consisting of the members Joe Duplantier (lead vocals, guitar), Mario Duplantier (drums, percussion), Christian Andreu (guitar) and Jean-Michel Labadie (bass), it took the band several years to gradually build their success. They released several demos and EPs in their early years which failed to catch any significant attention. Although with extensive touring and support slots for Cannibal Corpse, Edge of Sanity and Immortal, the band slowly grew in momentum.

It was not until their third full length release, "From Mars to Sirius" (2005) that the band were to make any significant headway, with the record reaching number 44 in the French charts and receiving widespread critical acclaim. Gojira had now caught the attention of the music world, gaining several key appearances at European festivals as well as embarking on European and American tours with the likes of Trivium, Children of Bodom and Machine Head.

Their fourth album, "The Way of All Flesh" came out in 2008, finding significant success in the American charts, reaching number 138. The band then embarked on an extensive touring campaign, taking four years to record their next studio album. Having signed to major label Roadrunner Records, Gojira released their fifth record, "L'Enfant Sauvage" in 2012, which was critically praised and established Gojira as a powerful force in the metal scene.

Live reviews

Gojira plays a unique brand of heavy metal in that they are absolutely relentless in their crushing thrash influenced guitar riffs, yet so rhythmic, almost robotic, in their melodies that their style seems to lend itself to the progressive side.

If there’s one thing to be said about Gojira, it is that they bring it live no questions asked. Whether they’re playing in a small club of a few hundred or a European metal festival in front of hundreds of thousands, Gojira’s intensity live is unmatched and the crowd response shows that, again, no matter the size. Gojira’s relentless music is perfect for the live environment.

Fast, heavy and downright brutal at times for the fan that wants to let out their aggression in the pit, yet technically proficient enough for the type of fan that prefers to stand back, take in a couple of drinks and enjoy the music on stage and the absorb the energy that surrounds them. Although, I can not imagine anyone seeing Gojira live and not feeling a sudden urge to get into the pit, especially not after a few whiskeys. They’re simply that good live, that brutal, one has really no other choice but to get involved in the Gojira experience.

A brilliant night despite one or two hiccups, personal and otherwise.

Gojira are like no other band I’ve seen. My son and I had been looking forward to this gig for months.

They played a very decent mix of songs, old and newer; among which a couple of favourites so we both went home happy.

The music is their own...an eclectic rollercoaster pace with some very poignant and relevant lyrics.

They experienced a technical hitch during the show with the lights, but no one cared. To be honest it’s all about the music with them. They could have played in darkness and it still would have been an awesome gig. The band were absolute professionals despite it all as well.

The O2 venues do however need a more comprehensive and workable policy when dealing with autistic fans. An incident with security (just one, others did finally help us), did put a small dampener, leaving my son feeling physically sick with stress throughout the show, otherwise it was worth the wait and effort to get him there! Hopefully they’ll review their staff training in future.

Overall I would highly recommend seeing this band.

Scandinavia is known for having a long term affinity with the genre of metal. However central Europe also has some great exports with the likes of Germany and the UK being home to icons of the genre. One of France's most well known bands internationally is Gojira.

The group originally from sunny Bayonne turned towards the darkness in the mid-90s and have enjoyed success with the fans ever since. They have done particularly well in the States where the fanbase has expanded rapidly with the release of every album and despite the group not putting out original material in almost three years, the shows continue to sell out due to their great live performance and strong back catalogue. The language barrier does not affect their rapport as they bait the crowd with a thick French accent which does not detract from any of the intensity. The crowd jumps, chants, moshs and sings throughout the night and the show culminates in a crunching finale of 'Vacuity' which really is the most intense performance so far.

I'm fortunate to have seen Gojira play in some pretty small venues in Chicago, as they're deservedly playing huge festivals and larger crowds now. The positive energy at a Gojira show is pretty unique - you see a lot of smiling faces. Their themes of self-discovery, perseverance, and environmental consciousness provide an uplifting vibe compared to the usual neurotic/depressing metal fare. In this thematic backdrop the music comes across as heavy, intense, and just so *beautiful*. Do yourself a favor, learn a few of the songs and go see them - they're one of the most powerful and worthwhile metal bands in a very long time.

Gojira speaks to me. Best metal show Ive ever seen. Such energy, such discipline and self control, top notch progressive metal sound, a beautiful masterpiece that is Gojira. Ive been going to see concerts for over 20 years now and nothing impressed me more than this band Which Ive loved since the days of Godzilla. I will pay anytime they come near me. Im more partial to the sounds of The way of all Flesh and from Mars to sirius but even the magma album, though its toned down a bit, is still fantasic. GOJIRA FOREVER!!!

Great set, packed, the venue was nice too. And the band did put a solid show. Strobe lights were a bit strong for my eyes, could be me. However, I wish the sound quality was better where I was (placed near the front, a bit on the right). It's borderline acceptable (can't hear much the lead singer).

By far the best show I've ever been to. Amazing sound, amazing energy from both the band and the crowds, a strong comraderie especially when the entire crowd is singing/clapping/cheering to the songs.

A fantastic night and would 1000% reccomend and can't wait to catch Gojira again!

I've seen gojira 6 times and they are always amazing. The 02 academy in bristol is awful though, I have seen loads of bands there. Terrible sound. Terrible atmosphere. Awful view of the stage unless you are on the barrier. The security are also assholes. Shit venue.

Awesome! Better live than recorded but way better than you’d ever expect. Venue was super packed and couldn’t see “that” well but it was still awesome! Hopefully they come to Ohio sometime for a show in the future since I drove 9 hours to see them.

A statement from the band explains their decision on the new dates…

“ We cannot express how much we appreciate your continued patience and support while we worked through last month’s postponement.

All tickets for the original show dates are valid and for  additional information please visit www.gojira-music.com ”

Gojira’s Merch Prices On Their New European/UK Tour Spark Heated Debate

After being met with pandemic-related issues and logistical challenges, French progressive metal outfit Gojira recently commenced their previously postponed leg of European/UK touring. However, the acclaimed group have been met with a bit of backlash online regarding the pricing of their merchandise at the shows.

The post that set off the debate can be seen below:

Feast your eyes. pic.twitter.com/53lw6pEIJ4 — Chris Jones (@_chrisjones_) February 12, 2023

The tweet has managed to rack up over 559k views on Twitter since being posted this past Sunday, February 12th. It is thought to have been taken at the opening Irish dates of the band’s ongoing European/UK trek. For those not native to the UK, the aforementioned prices roughly translate to a $49 USD for a t-shirt, $97 USD for a hoodie, and so on.

As has been detailed in the past, touring in recent times for the majority of bands is by no means an easy feat. With little income generated from streaming for all but a lucky few, and declining physical sales, merch sales from live shows have become the lifeblood of a touring artist in recent years.

Touring has also become an even bigger gamble in the current economic climate. The nature of tours being booked months, if not a year, in advance means that budgeting for them has become highly unpredictable. Faced with staggering inflation, an energy crisis and an industry looking to quickly bounce back from years of pandemic-related income loss , the strain put on mid-level and lower touring artists has been devastating to say the least.

While some have taken to assume Gojira are being greedy, others have rallied to their defense. The eco-conscious band have had a long history of standing firm to their beliefs of environmentalism and sustainability , and as you’ll soon find out, that may play a part in the seemingly ‘inflated’ prices.

Among those to jump to the defense of Gojira is Stray From The Path drummer (and ‘ The Downbeat ‘ podcast host) Craig Reynolds . Across a series of tweets, he delved into what he feels are the reasons for the higher cost of the merch:

ZERO chance that gojira prints on unsustainable merchandise. the cost for certified sustainable cotton blanks is far, FAR more than a normal shirt. even if this wasn’t the case: merch cut, manager cut, possible label cut, pay the designer, merch company: split what’s left 4 ways https://t.co/fyraE57IYl — craig reynolds (unofficial) (@reynlord) February 13, 2023
mario HAND DRAWS art on his drumheads. i am fucking sick of bands trying to make a living in the worst possible time to make art also getting held to these impossible standards by the fans who probably don’t bat an eyelid buying a £7 coffee. don’t like it? don’t buy it — craig reynolds (unofficial) (@reynlord) February 13, 2023
complain about your energy bill not 4 people who make some of the best music of all time trying to put food on the table. fuck man it SUCKS out here. — craig reynolds (unofficial) (@reynlord) February 13, 2023
£40 shirt. 20% merch rate (sometimes +/-) £32 left Cost of goods maybe as high as £12 if it’s a good blank/ design/ neck label £20 left Manager cut 15% £17 profit Just over 50% markup, the absolute minimum markup you’ll see on almost any item you buy every single day — craig reynolds (unofficial) (@reynlord) February 13, 2023
have i got news for you guys about oil — craig reynolds (unofficial) (@reynlord) February 13, 2023
yeah but i can get a t shirt in primark for £7 well yes but it’s not gojira and children died so you could wear it — craig reynolds (unofficial) (@reynlord) February 14, 2023
i hope you guys liked my thread i had heart palpitations i was so angry and couldn’t sleep. couple points: you can’t say “it’s not even dollars!!!” bc its two different economies, £10 goes further in Poland and less far in Switzerland. local currency is the parameter. — craig reynolds (unofficial) (@reynlord) February 14, 2023

GOJIRA Has 'A Lot Of Ideas' For Next Album: 'I Have A Feeling It Is Going To Be Heavier', Says MARIO DUPLANTIER

In a new interview with Colombia's El Expreso Del Rock , GOJIRA drummer Mario Duplantier was asked if he and his bandmates have commenced work on the follow-up to 2021's "Fortitude" album. He responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. We work on new stuff for a long time, actually. We have a lot, a lot, a lot of ideas. We have structures of new songs. But we are so picky that we really want to take this time to drop something very unique. And why not having more songs to record? Instead of having 10 songs, maybe have like 15 songs; I don't know. But we are working on it very hard. But it's a bit early in the process to talk about the date of release and all that. But what I can tell is it's on a good way. We are very proud of what we have right now."

Asked if there is "a lot of difference between this new material" and the songs on "Fortitude" , Mario said: "Um, I almost wanna say yes. It's different. It's a bit early to say but I have a feeling it is going to be heavier."

As for whether he and his bandmates are working on new material in New York, where Mario 's brother, GOJIRA guitarist/vocalist Joseph Duplantier , lives and owns a recording studio or they are working separately on music, Mario said: "We did work on tour a lot, actually, because we were touring so much that we share ideas and we jammed a little bit in dressing room. And then, yeah, we're working in New York, in France. It's our secret formula, but we send ideas to each other. We jam together sometimes. But definitely most of the work will be done in New York."

This past April, Joseph told Ireland's Overdrive that Mario "was very busy recording drum patterns and song structures over the pandemic period, and I have a few new things also. We're just sending a few ideas to each other here and there.

"Right now, I feel like I squeezed myself like a lemon for 'Fortitude' , and I have nothing left in the tank," he explained. "I believe that the slow process is best for us. Some bands just pump out new music with lightning speed, and from what I've seen with a few bands, it's not a good vibe. In fact, it's very stressful and can cause bands to implode. I don't want that to happen to GOJIRA . I want to take it slow and do the very best that we can do when it comes to writing music and lyrics."

Duplantier also talked about how important having his own recording studio, Silver Cord , which is located near his home in New York City on the border of Ridgewood, Queens and Bushwick, Brooklyn, has been for GOJIRA 's creativity. He said: "Building the studio was one of the best decisions I have ever made. For me, it's mandatory to have a place where I can work and not be interrupted. I can just be there feeling miserable and trying to come up with ideas, and it's okay if they don't come at once. Silver Cord is a place where ideas are born, nurtured and grow into bigger things, or perhaps not at all. [ Laughs ] Either way, it doesn't matter because I can just leave and come back tomorrow.

"Before Silver Cord , we had a studio in France [we recorded three albums there], and when I moved to New York in 2009-2010, I was between creative places, and away from the rest of the band… which was a really weird time," he explained. "But that's when I started thinking about building a studio, and Mario moved over for a few years and helped me build Silver Cord .

"I am notoriously slow when I work, because I like to go through everything with a fine-tooth comb, and then after a while, there might be a creative explosion where lots of music or lyrics are written in short period of time, so just being able to have this special place to do all of that, is absolutely vital for me personally.

"I'm not very organized," Joseph added. "I know people who prepare all their demos, go the studio, record, and then that's that. For me, I'm kind of all over the place. [ Laughs ]. Sometimes, I may start the writing process by mixing before I even have one song. For example, I have recorded an entire demo in the past, just to research how it sounds and how we are gonna do things going forward."

In October 2022, GOJIRA released a new song titled "Our Time Is Now" . The track appears on the soundtrack to EA Sports ' long-running NHL video game franchise "NHL 23" .

"Fortitude" came out in April 2021 via Roadrunner Records . The follow-up to 2016's "Magma" was recorded and produced by Joseph at Silver Cord and mixed by Andy Wallace ( NIRVANA , RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE ).

GOJIRA initially laid the foundation for "Fortitude" in 2020 with the surprise release of the single "Another World" .

The artwork for "Fortitude" was created by Joseph .

GOJIRA and MASTODON recently completed two legs of "The Mega-Monsters Tour" , a massive co-headline run across North America, along with special guests LORNA SHORE on all dates.

Godzilla Minus One Streaming: When Will It Release Online (2024 Update)

Godzilla Minus One

Godzilla Minus One is just about to close its theatrical window, so when will it be ready to watch online through digital video-on-demand and streaming?

Godzilla Minus One was a back-to-basics take on everyone’s favorite giant radioactive kaiju. The film featured impressive special effects, a compelling story, and even the ability to make audiences care about the human characters.

The film enjoyed near-universal acclaim and currently holds a 98% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes . It was so beloved that audiences are already clamoring for a sequel.

[ Godzilla Minus One Ending Explained: Noriko's Final Scene Explained ]

When Will Godzilla Minus One Be Released Online?

Godzilla Minus One

Godzilla Minus One made its way to cinemas on December 1, 2023, and is presently on the cusp of wrapping up its theatrical run. This has left many fans curious as to when the movie will be available to watch again at home.

At this time, unfortunately, there is no officially announced digital release date for Godzilla Minus One , but that doesn’t mean a good idea of when it could hit digital can’t be sussed out.

For starters, it’s important to note that Toho, the iconic Japanese studio that was responsible for Godzilla Minus One , often holds back on streaming its films for a longer than average amount of time.

That being said, the movie was so incredibly popular, that Toho may choose to strike while the iron is hot and get Godzilla Minus One online for digital purchase and streaming as soon as possible.

At least as far as the film’s digital release goes, WhenToStream predicted that it could be ready for online purchase in late February/early March.

Will Godzilla Minus One Come to Streaming?

So, when and where will Godzilla Minus One eventually be streamable?

The "when" is sadly anyone’s guess at this point. And it could be a while until a streaming date is given, especially since the film doesn’t even have a digital release date yet.

As for the "where," Toho’s other semi-recent Godzilla release, 2016’s Shin Godzilla , is only available to watch on the anime-focused streaming platform Crunchyroll. It remains to be seen whether Minus One follows suit.

Godzilla Minus One made roughly $106 million USD worldwide during its run in theaters. That may not be as high a numerical amount as one’s average American blockbuster, but considering the movie only cost about $15 million USD to produce, it was a considerable success.

That success, (plus the potential that it could win an Oscar for best visual effects) might influence a major streaming service, such as Netflix or Max to bid for Minus One ’s exclusive streaming rights, but this too remains entirely unconfirmed.
