Travel Tips for New York City

If you’ve never visited the Big Apple before, here are a few trips for traveling to the city that should help make your trip as hitch-free as possible. Take these into consideration as you’re planning your trip.

Arrive at least a day ahead of schedule. New York City is busy, and it’s hectic. If you only allow yourself a buffer of a few hours before your ship leaves, there’s a really good chance that you are going to miss your cruise. But, arriving a day before gives you a buffer for traffic delays and allows you time to explore the city a little bit.

Don’t drive in the city. Unless you really have to, driving in the city is not recommended, especially if you’ve never been to NYC before. Take advantage of the many forms of public transportation available, or invest in good walking shoes and walk around the city. Driving will only leave you more frustrated and stressed, which is not want you want just before your cruise vacation.

Uber is cheaper than taxicabs. Although flagging down a taxi from the side of the street in Manhattan is an iconic image, it is also an expensive one. If you need a ride around the city, your best option will be to get a ride from an Uber or Lyft driver.

New York City has a lot going for it when it comes to visiting for your cruise. It’s filled with fun, history, and a nightlife that never ends. They say that NYC is the city that never sleeps, and it is very true.

The list of ideal hotels to stay in before leaving on your cruise out of the Manhattan Cruise Terminal should ease some of the decision making for your trip. Decide what you want in a hotel as far as amenities and price is concerned, and go from there.

Remember, if you are looking for something that will allow you to park on hotel property during your cruise, or you need something that provides a shuttle to the pier, you won’t find it in the heart of Manhattan. The closest hotels that offer those types of services are in New Jersey, and we’ve listed some of the best.

The best feature that the Manhattan hotels have to offer is their proximity to the terminal. Some as little as half a mile, which makes getting to the port on cruise day a breeze.

Guide to New York Cruise Parking (Cape Liberty, Manhattan, Brooklyn)

Unfortunately, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that parking for a New York cruise is a bit of a hassle… and expensive. As one of the most densely populated cities in America, parking is a precious resource.

Unlike other departure ports where there is plenty of space around the port for parking (including independent lots that usually charge less than the ports), that not the case in Manhattan, Cape Liberty, or Brooklyn.

That said, while you may not have as many options outside of the port as you would sailing from elsewhere around the country, each cruise terminal in the area does offer on-site parking just steps from the ship.

Below, we’ve rounded up your parking options for each of the three cruise ports servicing the New York area. This includes the official port parking and any third-party lots that also cater to cruisers.

Scroll down to find your best option, depending on the port from which you sail.

Cape Liberty Cruise Parking Options

Located on the Jersey side of the New York area, Cape Liberty is most notably home to Royal Caribbean’s ships. The port area offers a few options for parking, but expect to pay upwards of $20 per day, no matter where you decide to leave your vehicle. Here is an overview of your options…

Official Port Parking The Cape Liberty terminal offers a parking garage next to the cruise terminal, within just steps of the ship. The garage charges $22 per day to park, so for a week-long cruise, expect to shell out $150+ in parking alone.

Don’t worry about reserving a spot, as they aren’t needed. In addition, all major credit cards and cash are welcome. If you have an RV or other large vehicle (camper, etc.) then expect to pay double the daily rate. Still, it’s hard to beat the convenience of being able to drive right up to the ship and park.

  • Cost: $22 per day
  • Distance: At terminal
  • Website:   http://www.cruiseliberty.com/directions_parking.html

Park2Go This parking lot is located about 20 minutes from the cruise port, and just south of Newark International Airport. It’s certainly not as convenient as parking right at the port, but in exchange you get a much cheaper rate.

The rate is $16 per day for outside parking and $18 for indoor parking. However, we often see specials for rates of $13/$14 for parking. That savings of $9 per day off the port’s rates can save you about $50 on a week’s parking while you cruise.

There is also a free shuttle back and forth from the port. Reservations are required.

  • Cost: $16 inside | $18 outside
  • Distance: 10.5 miles | 20 minutes
  • Website:   http://www.park2go.com/seaport-parking

Newark Airport Parking It’s a bit of a workaround, but Cape Liberty’s location near Newark International Airport provides a creative way to park for your cruise.

Parking lots that cater to the airport offer per day parking for as little as $9 — more than 50% off the price of official port parking. The thing is that these parking lots don’t offer rides to the cruise port.

Instead, you’ll have to park and then find your own transportation (a taxi or Uber/Lyft ) to get to the cruise port and return after your trip. Depending on your budget, this may still be worth it versus the convenience of simply parking at Cape Liberty.

Manhattan Terminal Cruise Parking

Parking in Manhattan? Yep, it’s tough. Luckily, there is parking right at the cruise port and some other options within the area.

Official Port Parking By far the most convenient parking is the official port parking that’s located right at the cruise piers. You simply pull in, park, unload, and check in for your trip. There is no worrying about shuttles or transportation to the port. Of course, you’ll pay for this convenience.

Parking rates are $40 per day at the Manhattan Terminal. Going on a longer trip? Parking over 11 nights is a flat $400. No reservations are accepted; parking is on a first-come, first-served basis. The port accepts Visa, MasterCard, and cash. Your vehicle must be less than 8 feet high to park.

Frankly, given the expense of parking here, it’s a good idea to use alternate transportation to cruise from Manhattan .

Cost: $40 per day Distance: At terminal Website:   https://www.nycruise.com/manhattan-terminal/parking/

Manhattan Cruise Parking (ParkRight) ParkRight is located just a few blocks south of the cruise terminal, but will save you big on cruise parking. Book online and the price for a week’s parking is $29 per day and $33 for SUVs and minivans. Reservations are required.

Note that pickup trucks are not allowed.

Instead of a shuttle, a parking attendant will take you to the terminal in your own vehicle, drop you off, and then valet your car to their parking lot. When you return, you’ll need to catch a cab back to the parking lot to get your car.

Cost: $29 per day (cars) | $33 (SUV/mini-van) Distance: 1 mile | 5 minutes Website:   http://www.manhattancruiseparking.com/

ParkNSave ParkNSave offers parking lots that are just a few blocks north of the cruise terminals. Specifically, it has the 601 West 57th Street Parking Garage for cruise passengers.

You won’t save money by parking here, as the daily rate is $40 per day. If you drive an oversized vehicle (pretty much any mid-sized SUV/truck and above), then parking is $70 per day.

Reservations are definitely needed and you will need to find transport to and from the terminal. We’d suggest most people simply park at the cruise port as it’s the same price and more convenient.

Cost: $40 per day Distance: 0.8 miles | 4 minutes Website: http://parknsave.com

Brooklyn Terminal Cruise Parking

The Brooklyn Cruise Terminal is not near as busy as the Manhattan and Cape Liberty ports, so that makes things a bit easier in navigating parking and embarkation on cruise day. If you are sailing aboard the Queen Mary 2, Silversea Cruises, or Princess Cruises, then the Brooklyn port will be your point of boarding.

Frankly, there aren’t many options other than the official port parking. Yes, there are lots around the city, but they don’t cater to cruisers and their prices aren’t enough of a difference to make it worth the time and hassle of parking elsewhere and then coming back to the port to cruise.

cruise park and stay new york

Official Port Parking The port’s parking lot is a surface lot right next to the terminal, meaning it’s only a short walk to the ship. Rates run $25 a day, with a day being anything over four hours. So on a week’s cruise, expect to pay $200 for parking.

Given that expense, it’s ideal to find alternate transportation to the cruise port if you can. If you do park here, no reservations are needed and SUVs are welcome without an additional charge. Cash and major credit cards are accepted.

Cost: $25 per day (day is more than 4 hours) Distance: At terminal Website:   http://www.nycruise.com/brooklyn-terminal/parking/

Just rented a beautiful upscale brownstone in Boerum Area of New York. This was our first time using Onefinestay, and we were very pleased! I love the constant communication and willingness to answer any questions/concerns we may have. They stayed in touch with us during our complete stay, insuring our stay was enjoyable! The home was absolutely stunning & in a very nice area! We love to cook, and the kitchen was completely stocked with all we needed and more! We have been loyal customers of Vrbo, and though will continue to use them, I will search the onefinestay site first!

Had problems with a/c & One Fine Stay did nothing for us. We had to leave early as my wife got a sore throat/cold due to the extremely ( & uncontrollable ) apartment. No partial refund, either. AVOID THESE RIPOFFS

Photo of Barbie M.

Worked for them in Culver City all I can say is this place is horrible. Horrible employees and horrible guest. I didnt mind the cleaning, but they hire such ghetto, unprofessional people to work with. Everybody is loud, cursing, yelling about their baby daddys and when i complained it fell on deaf ears. The guest where do I start, cleaning the home and a man appears butt ass naked, they know were coming by to clean yet they leave dirty panties in the bed its just nasty.

This place is a "SHELL" company that rents other people's property out as a type of middle man. They provide minimal services while increasing their profits margins. Customer service is 0. All in all, this is an illegal venture which means buyer beware because you may be legally evicted by law enforcement and vulnerable to legal action. (criminal charges) also, covid 19

Photo of Ravi S.

Please be careful with these people. I could not come to london because I got covid and covid was rampant in London over Xmas '21. My airline, theatre, etc tickets were refunded. One fine stay did not, hid behind 'senior management decision' and 'it's up to the owner'. And, of course, the fine print. Read the fine print (which most of us don't do because we trust) and recognize who you are dealing with.

Photo of Gaston B.

We had the worst experience with these people since the very first day. The apartment located in East Village (Manhattan) was NOT at the level of an expensive apartment to rent, noisy floors, lousy wifi, all the cabinets sealed for owner privacy and even trash bags covering the cabinets. We reached out to the customer service team and all we got were excuses and obviously no refunds whatsoever.

Photo of Ann M.

We were in New York for our daughter's wedding and I needed an upscale apartment for our week long stay. I was very pleased with onefinestay and the property in Park Slope. The location was ideal, just a block from Prospect Park and a few blocks from groceries and restaurants. We were met at the townhouse and given a tour and brief instructions. We also received a phone to use with directions, local interest places and a direct line to onefinestay. We needed a few more chairs and they were delivered promptly. They also delivered a bottle of champagne when they realized we were there for a wedding! The cleaning people came in mid-way through the week and were cheerful and accommodating. They did a fine job! We hosted a brunch on Sunday and the caterer was impressed with the space as were my guests. I have nothing bad to say about the experience and will be happy to use them again.

NOT A FINE STAY. We rented a really nice apartment for a whole month in Paris. We stayed right off Avenue St. Germain. We spent nearly 13,000 USD. I have never felt more ripped off in my life. SCAM after SCAM. We visited the apartment nearly 6 months before and we very impressed. When we arrived for our stay half of the appliances were not working. The bathroom emanated of stink I have never smelled before. Worst of all there were red stickers everywhere. We barely had room for our own clothing. We were forbidden to watch t.v. And worse of all, the neighbors were not ok with the rental in the building and came down to harass us daily. When we called ONE FINE STAY... they ignored us at first and said they were incapable of resolving any of our issues. We ended up paying them a surprise visit at the Paris office in hopes of getting someone to care about our serious concerns. Upon arrival at the office, we discovered that the organization is being run by kids. No one took us seriously and in the end were credited 800 euros and nothing was fixed or resolved. We couldn't even cook in the kitchen. We ended up having to spend 2 weekends in a hotel. WOW!!! I waited a few months before posting this review in hopes they would have a change of heart and do the right thing...They did not. SO disappointing. My advice: If you want to spend money with One Fine Stay... you should just BURN IT. I promise it will give you more joy than giving these folks your money. This Pseudo"organization" should be closed down for taking advantage of people. BE WARE OF THE SCAM. Stay somewhere else, Stay with someone else and STAY AWAY from ONE FINE STAY!

Photo of Emilia M.

OFS in New York is not on the same level of experience as OFS in London. It is a Good stay (comparitavely), but not a Fine stay. This conclusion was drawn from having stayed in each city multiple times with OFS, over the last few years. Where OFS NYC really lacks is communication and due diligence practices. Our "manager" was MIA during the 2 pivotal times - the arrival and the departure. When we had an issue with our initial accommodation, with condescending dismissal we were told that we should have read the fine print. We did, the fine print (or the photography) did not cover embedded foul smells, deep filth, broken aircons, filthy + broken kitchen/laundry equipment, a tiny bed, squeaky matress, smelly pillows, etc. This person has misconstrued our comments to the supervisor that we simply didn't like the visual aesthtics. Most communication with the "manager" took place via impersonal emails that ended with phrases like "have a great day", without resolving the issues. After several exchanges, I have come to realize that the "managers" have not even been to the properties or understand the level One Fine Stay should meet, and therefore could only refer to the fine print. If you are thinking of staying with OFS, I suggest to put together a list of questions of what's important for YOUR comfortable stay and send them in before you book. There are no refunds, after 24 hours of booking. OFS asks you to fill out a questionnaire that includes questions about your flight + arrival details. We filled it out twice but it seems that the appropriate person in NYC doesn't read them. If your flight is running late or early, you have to call them to make sure they are aware. Our manager was not tracking our flight (with technology today, it's as easy as a touch of a button) and did not check emails after 5:30pm or during the weekends. The superstar of our experience was the Direction of Operations. She was highly professional, reliable and a problem solver. Most importantly she understands the definion of a fine stay and the level of service that goes into that. Actually, everyone who works directly under her was great. Unfortunately, she can't be in 10 places simultaneously and do everyone's job. The experience in London, as a guest, has been great. Communication is quick, courteous and reliable. Homes, old or new, are always clean, well equipped and comfortable.

What a terrible experience. I just spent a week in Grand Cayman that travel keys/One Fine Stay almost ruined. We arrived at the house to find a home that was almost unrecognizable... talk about false advertising. The home was to sleep 12 but only sat 6 at the dinner table, crappy plastic table outside with a couple dirty chairs, only maybe 5 lounge chairs, dirty furniture, mold smell, rusty appliances and to top it off we were getting water boarded in the middle of the night from the air conditioner vents dripping all over us. We complained to the local concierge and received only a defensive attitude and emailed travel keys but didnt hear back for 3 days. We couldnt even stay at the house and had to find another home due to the conditions. Travel Keys and One Fine Stay is giving us a terrible time for a refund. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. #travelkeys #onefinestay #terribleexperience
