Elmley has a wide range of places to stay : a 6-bedroom farmhouse; a 5-bedroom cottage; 2 wooden cabins; 3 large shepherd's huts; a mini-cabin; 2 traditional shepherd's huts; and bell tents (summer only). Kingshill Farmhouse , stunningly renovated in a bold bohemian scheme, has six knock-out bedrooms: four ensuite on the first floor plus a two-bedroom family suite in the attic sharing a bathroom. The ground floor has a library with games, a cosy snug, a drawing room complete with chandelier, and a breakfast room extension with dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows for those amazing eastern views. Another option for larger parties is two-storey five-bedroomed Elmley Cottage , refurbished in soft retro colours. It has big picture windows overlooking the Reserve for excellent birding, and a convivial open-plan ground floor with full kitchen. There's a useful utility room and four bedrooms can be doubles or twins as preferred. The layout works well for a couple or small family too, and the cottage can be booked at a reduced occupancy rate during the winter months. Guests in houses can choose either serviced or self-catering stays depending on your requirements – private chefs, meals and housekeeping and a host service can be arranged. To get closer to nature, book one of the beautifully conceived shepherds huts and cabins , strung along a low ridge for maximum big sky views across salt marshes and water courses. Vintage-styled Samphire (where we stayed) and Little Owl are the most bijou; next up is rustic Vanellus. The three large custom-built wooden huts (Damson, Saltbox and Ferryman's) come with outdoor baths or shower. The two newest cabins (The Roost and Martha's Hut) have waterfall showers and outside baths; Martha's Hut has side glazing to maximise those views. All have ensuite shower bathrooms, private outside seating beside willow screens or trees and a firepit. In summer, you can sleep in a traditional bell tent . Set in pretty meadows and woodland, they are spacious (5m wide), tall enough to stand, and surprisingly comfy. Think coir matting, thick rugs, proper beds with soft duvets and pillows, and space for 2 kids' beds. Each tent comes with a charcoal barbecue and gas stove, lanterns, a kettle, tea and proper coffee and mugs, plus outdoor seating. There are individual cabin showers and toilets in a shared block and shared camp kitchen a short walk away plus a lovely fire pit with hay-bale seating. You can charge devices, or take shelter, in the barn if needed.

Features include:

  • In-room treatments available

If, like us, your idea of a relaxing break doesn't involve cooking, make sure to order hampers . Breakfast hampers can be delivered to your cottage, shepherd hut or bell tent with your choice of bacon, egg, avocado, halloumi and tomato sandwiches plus freshly ground coffee or tea. Order a picnic – perhaps vegetable quiche and salad, fruit and juice – or buy savoury snacks or cakes from the cafe for heading out to the reserve for the day. For whole house hire a private chef can be arranged and meals in Kingshill or Elmley can be served formally in the dining rooms if guests wish (for a surcharge). Supper hampers consist of two courses from a daily changing set menu (dietary requirements catered for) which you are given advance notice of; we really enjoyed chicken pie followed by apple crumble and custard which we ate in the Barn for a change of scene. Pleasingly, Elmley make a real effort to use local produce. If cooking is preferred, there are supermarkets in Sittingbourne, and both Elmley Cottage and Kingshill Farmhouse have well-equipped kitchens. The largest huts have galley kitchenettes, while Samphire and Little Owl share a camp kitchen which has solar-powered cool boxes and basic cooking facilities. For those in the bell tents, there's a shared camp kitchen and you can hire a BBQ kit with cooking equipment, falconware crockery and charcoal, rather than having to bring it with you. End your evening with marshmallows around your firepit.

  • Dinner by arrangement
  • Hob or stove
  • Kids' meals

  • Lunch by arrangement

  • Picnics on request

Activities on site or nearby include:

  • Birdwatching

This is a terrific place to come with children of all ages as there is plenty of space to run around and the flexible accommodation set-up means that all shapes and size of family can be made comfortable here. We came with our two primary school-agers and they loved it. That said, there are lots of open ponds and streams, so you will have to keep a careful eye on toddlers, and if in shepherds huts space inside is at a premium. Linhay barn is available in the event of wet weather, and offers films and board games.

Family friendly accommodation:

The best huts for families are Saltbox, Damson and Ferrymans as they can take two young children apiece (the seat turns into a bed and there's also a hammock across the bed). The Roost has a double sofa bed, while Martha's Hut has a small double pullout, so both can also take two kids. Book a bell tent in the summer months to be pitched beside any of the huts for extra capacity/children, or the woodland or meadow tents can house a family of four in comfort. Large families or family parties should book five-bedroomed Elmley Cottage (smaller families can book this too) or six-bedroomed Kingshill Farmhouse, which has a family suite which sleeps 4 (the Lookout and its adjoining Nest) on the top floor, with a shared bathroom.

Baby equipment:

Remember   baby and child equipment may be limited or need pre-booking

Children's meals:

If you opt for meals delivered to your door, special requests and flexible mealtimes are easily catered for with a little notice. You are asked for your preferences. We enjoyed fruit crumble and chicken pie for dinner one night, and the breakfast sandwiches went down a treat. The kids liked having picnic baskets of food to delve into

A tour of the trailblazing Elmley nature reserve: ‘Little more than an hour from London and we feel we’ve been on safari’

One family’s steadfast commitment to Nature means the privately run Elmley National Nature Reserve in Kent teems with wildlife, including the country’s largest lowland collection of breeding waders.

The Isle of Sheppey is not the first place you might think of as a beautiful landscape. At the confluence of the Thames and Medway estuaries, it generally conforms to the term coined by the filmmaker Derek Jarman for his garden at Dungeness , in another part of Kent: Modern Nature. In his case, that meant the Nature that survives in the shadow of a nuclear power station.

There is no power station on Sheppey, but it is hardly manicured — low-lying and marshy, it was known by the soldiers posted here in the First World War as ‘mud island’. Indeed, remains of Sheppey’s 20th-century defences can still be seen in the remnants of concrete structures around the shore.

Prepare, then, to be surprised.

book a visit elmley

In the lee of tall-arcing Sheppey Crossing bridge lies Elmley, site of the only farmer-run National Nature Reserve (NNR) in Britain. (It can no longer be called the only privately run NNR in Britain, because the Earl of Leicester now manages the Holkham NNR in Norfolk, having followed Elmley’s example. Not bad company to keep.) If you were parachuted onto the marshes one night, you might think you were on the west coast of Scotland when you opened your eyes at dawn.

Those dawns. Storm Dennis has yet to blow itself out when I visit in February, scattering the wigeon and other wildfowl to the further lagoons; there are still rafts of them bobbing on the water near the old Kingshill Farmhouse at first light. I heard them calling shrilly to each other during the night: the French call them canards siffleurs, whistling ducks. During the day, the flocks will feed voraciously on the grass of the marsh, as they fatten themselves up for the long flights they will soon be making to Iceland, Scandinavia or Russia.

A barn owl labours past, making slow progress against the wind. In the opposite direction, a flight of pochard, with chestnut heads, shoot past as if the birds were turbo-charged. Wherever I look, there seemed to be hares, practising for the 100-yard dash. If I had come a little earlier in the year, in different conditions, I might have seen the sky turn black with waterfowl as throngs got into the air. This could be called England’s Camargue. It has the largest collection of breeding waders in lowland UK.

This is all the more remarkable because Elmley is also a working farm, with no Government help beyond that available to all farmers through agri-environment schemes. However, it is in the hands of a remarkable family. Until recently, the chief representative was Philip Merricks, whose involvement began 50 years ago. Elmley was then run on conventional lines, but, as a passionate conservationist, he saw that it had further potential. For the past 20 years, it has been managed for wildlife, with sheep and cattle contributing to the regime.

A couple of years ago, Philip’s daughter, Georgina, and her husband, Gareth Fulton, took it on; they have converted the old farmhouse to an upmarket holiday let, turned an ancient barn into a sociable area-cum-party space and installed a number of shepherd’s huts, which are proving popular with young London couples who want to experience the wild at close quarters.

When there are weddings — limited to about 20 a year — overflow guests can overnight in luxury tents. ‘Yoga retreats are really big for us at the moment,’ explains Georgina. ‘We thought of making a visitor centre and cafe, but that didn’t seem right. We have these huge skies and a flat, empty landscape — large numbers of people would spoil it. By staying the night, visitors can get under the skin of the place. So many people think they have to go to Africa to see wildlife, but here is something extraordinary on their doorstep.’

In a previous life, before her two children, Georgina worked in PR, representing, among other things, the Territorial Army. It was in that role that she met Gareth, then adjutant to his regiment, in the not obviously romantic setting of 10, Downing Street (she was organising a reception for veterans).

Gareth took to Elmley like a wigeon to water. As we walk to the farmhouse, a barn owl flaps from its roost; it lives in a tree a few feet away. Gareth picks up one of its pellets and pulls it apart to reveal its latest meal: evidently a vole, from the undigested mandible and teeth. We are on the cusp of a season now: ‘One night soon, there will be less burbling from the ponds and the wigeon will have gone north.’

Elmley then changes into its spring and summer plumage. This is the time for dragonflies and damselflies, including the ruddy darter dragonfly and scarce emerald damselfly. Swallows and house martins flit around the eaves of the buildings and marsh frogs strike up a concerto of evening croaking.

In the 18th century, Sheppey’s low-lying land was feared for its ‘marsh vapours’, which were thought to carry disease. According to Edward Hasted, the Kent historian, the pastures were ‘covered in ant hills, very wet in winter, and in summer subject to burn and split open eight or nine feet in depth’. Some of it was ‘very fertile in corn’, yet the commonest use remained the traditional one of fattening sheep; hence the name ‘Sheppey’.

A Short-Eared Owl (Asio flammeus) hunting on Elmley Nature Reserve.

As Secretary for the Admiralty, Samuel Pepys ordered that a dockyard should be built on the north point of the isle, as an extension to Chatham, with the workers initially housed in hulks. The hulks were replaced by houses in the 18th century, including some handsome examples in Mile Town (a mile from the dockyard) — the nucleus of modern Sheerness. The dockyard closed in 1960, removing a major source of employment. In recent years, pioneering champions of fine Georgian architecture have colonised the officers’ houses, but fashion has otherwise yet to descend.

This hardly affects the NNR. Lapwings bob and wheel on the wind, apparently for the pleasure of it, as Philip drives me out onto the marshes. Almost at once, we see a short-eared owl, then another, making an unhurried patrol of the marshes — as they hunt during the day. ‘They’re very rare; a few will breed in Scotland and up on the moors.’ The owls are joined by a marsh harrier, whose presence makes the waterfowl wheel into the air.

book a visit elmley

We drive onto the sea wall, looking over the saltmarsh to the mainland. Contrasting with the low lines of the estuary are the white cubic forms of a couple of factories; one makes plasterboard, the other cardboard boxes — hundreds of millions of them a year, in response to the demand from internet retailers. ‘Somebody said: “These factories strike me as so temporary, while the marshes seem so permanent.” I think that’s right.’

The marshes, I suggest, are immemorial. Good heavens, no, Philip tells me: all the work of Man. ‘The sea wall was built in medieval times, using spades — imagine it! Then the Victorians ploughed the land up for arable, using steam tackle. It fell into grass with the agricultural depression that began in the 1880s. During the First World War, it was ploughed up again; then went back to grass between the wars.’ The landscape today, with its seemingly natural rills, is entirely artificial. ‘In summer, we have very low rainfall. All the water has to be pumped on.’

book a visit elmley

The whole idea is to make it look natural, but there are probably 150 water-control pipes, allowing Gareth and his team to alter the height of water to the nearest half inch. The rills are created by bulldozer. If it were not managed, it would be unpredictable and we’d have far less wildlife.’ Foxes are controlled and badgers are kept out by means of fences; as a result, hedgehog numbers have boomed. So much for rewilding.

In the evening, the big sky is as luminescent as a Dutch landscape painting and the number of lapwings makes it difficult to leave. The crested dandies with their peewit call have caused something of a traffic incident, by Elmley standards; three cars have felt compelled to stop and watch them. Ours makes a fourth, until we drive reluctantly away. Little more than an hour from London and we feel we’ve been on safari.

A location where hares run free across the marshes and migrating birds babble, Elmley Nature Reserve on Kent’s north coast is a place of tranquility, whether you visit for a day’s discovery or stay overnight in a chichi shepherd’s hut

Words CAROLINE WHEATER Photographs REBECCA DOUGLAS, ROBERT CANIS AND SULA REIDLINGER

A nother late autumn day dawns at Elmley Nature Reserve and spectral ribbons of mist hang over the ditches and waterways that irrigate this unique coastal marshland habitat. At around 8am, a skein of resident greylag geese, flying in a V-shape, rise up from their watery overnight quarters to go foraging in a field, while large flocks of mallard and pintail ducks bustle about. The 3,200-acre estate, which is both a national nature reserve and a working farm, is on the eastern side of the Isle of Sheppey, where the Thames Estuary meets the English Channel. Overlooking the sheltered Swale Channel and its mudflats, Elmley is a safe haven for wildlife of all kinds, from wildfowl and waders, to hares and water voles, to insects and invertebrates.

In November, the vegetation on the freshwater grazing marsh and its saltwater marsh fringe is short and green, inviting to the whimbrels and green sandpipers that refuel en route to Africa. ‘This is a quiet time at the reserve, a changeover period before our full complement of migrating waders and wildfowl arrive to overwinter on the land and water bodies. It’s a rich feeding table,’ says Gareth Fulton, reserve manager and son-in-law of farmers Philip and Corinne Merricks who have been at Kingshill Farm for over 40 years – the only farming family in the country to own and run a national nature reserve.

THE BIG ARRIVAL Come January, Elmley will have filled with around 40,000 babbling birds, three-quarters of which are migratory. Vast flocks of wigeon – 10,000 strong – along with teal, lapwing, golden plover, curlews, redshanks and brent geese fly in from the Arctic and northern Europe. The colder it is, the earlier they arrive. With the visitors come aerobatic predators including short-eared owls, peregrine falcons, and sprite-like merlins that seasonally relocate from the UK’s northern moors for more abundant southerly pickings by the seaside.

Marsh harriers are the reserve’s star raptor and 12 breeding pairs live there permanently, joined at the winter table by many more – 160 of these beady-eyed birds were recorded last year, quite an achievement for a species that was near extinction in the 1970s. Four hides on the estate ensure that human visitors can watch the daily avian antics with ease. ‘Elmley is known to be one of South East England’s best places to see birds of prey in the wild,’ says Gareth. He adds that his favourite hide is remote Spitend on the edge of the salt marsh fringe, a five-kilometre walk from the farmhouse, with views out to the dark blue sea.

CONSERVATION MATTERS Not only is Elmley a site of special scientific interest (SSSI), it also has Ramsar status and is classified as a wetland of global importance. ‘By scale, the Thames Estuary is the biggest migratory stopping off point in the South East,’ explains Gareth, ‘and Elmley and the wider Swale ranks as the 15th most important site in the UK.’ The responsibility of looking after the reserve, in conjunction with Natural England, is taken very seriously by the Merricks and their daughter Georgina who moved here with Gareth in 2013 to help take the farm forward. ‘No chemicals have been used on the marsh for 50 years and as a consequence there’s an abundance of insect life – in autumn the mist settles on the thousands of spiders’ webs spun all over the marsh,’ Gareth says. It is also off-grid, with power generated by a solar array.

Careful management has made the reserve a stronghold for brown hares and water voles. ‘We see hares every day, sometimes they nibble the flowers in our garden!’ says Gareth. It’s not lost on them what a privilege this is, watching hares grazing on grass and wildflowers, dozing in their forms (little dips in the ground where they sleep), boxing in March for dominance, and looking after their leverets in the summer sunshine. Water voles are harder to spot, but just as busy.

book a visit elmley

To support Elmley’s biodiversity, water levels are carefully controlled and ditches monitored by Gareth and his team, which includes local volunteers. ‘We need a range of different aged ditches to make a variety of habitats, so some are three or four years old [since being cleared of silt], others are in their teens, others are over 20 years old.’ A suckler herd of 800 beef cattle help provide high quality food for the flocks because they ‘rip’ rather than nibble at the grass, which creates variety in the sward, allowing all sorts of wee beasties and aquatic wildflowers such as fleabane and water-crowfoot to thrive. The cattle are in residence from Easter to Christmas, and then from December to February 1,000 Romney Marsh sheep tidy up what’s left. In March the birds start to set up for breeding so the livestock is moved on.

STAY IN A LUXURY SHEPHERD'S HUT You can see all this action and more by spending a morning or a day at the reserve. There are guided tours to join and plenty of paths to potter along independently – take a packed lunch, a pair of binoculars and make an outing of it. Alternatively, Kingshill Farm offers a wilderness escape like no other, and is the only national nature reserve where you can stay overnight. This was an initiative driven by Gareth and Georgina. ‘When we arrived in 2013 to help diversify the business we knew birders would come here but we wanted to bring a new audience to conservation, so we introduced some hand-crafted shepherd’s huts for people to stay in. Guests come for a complete switch-off – the huts are widely spaced and all look east across the Swale Channel towards Whitstable so you feel like you’re in your own little world,’ says Gareth.

Elmley is just an hour’s train journey from London and once you’re there everything is provided, should you want it, from a hot breakfast to a two-course evening meal. Relaxation is a byword and each hut has a pair of Adirondack chairs and a fire pit to sit by in the evening, little extras such as marshmallows to roast are provided. Guests spend time walking, sitting on private Cockleshell Beach in the summer months, reading, and just watching life go by. Says Gareth: ‘In winter the soundscape is a babble of ducks and geese quacking, in summer you hear the hum of insects and the sea breezes blowing through the reeds. Being on the Thames Estuary, sometimes you hear the honk of a shipping horn – that’s all part of this place. It’s so atmospheric and so full of wildlife.’

Hoot, Howl and Sneeze: 6 Picture Books for Maximum Read-Aloud Joy

From silly rhymes to lively sound effects to stealthily-building suspense, these old standbys and new classics have something for everyone.

In a close-up illustration of his head, a subdued, googly-eyed green dragon with flaring nostrils stares wistfully at a long-beaked, rust-colored phoenix and lets out an unusually tiny “roar …” The phoenix stares back sympathetically.

By Elisabeth Egan

Elisabeth Egan is a writer and editor at the Book Review. She has worked in the world of publishing for 30 years.

There are two kinds of story time: the one where listeners’ heads drop sleepily onto your shoulders and the one that feels, refreshingly, like a table read for the theater of the absurd. The former is sweet and cozy. The latter sparks audience participation and requests for an encore. If you’re going for this vibe and in the mood to strut your stuff as a raconteur, start here.

The Gruffalo, by Julia Donaldson; illustrated by Axel Scheffler

Donaldson’s trusty dynamo is like a scoop of fine vanilla ice cream: enjoyable on its own, but dial up the extras and you have a hot fudge sundae (of sorts). Indeed, “The Gruffalo” boasts a buffet of crowd-pleasing features, including an uncomplicated rhyme scheme (wood/good, mouse/house), repeating lines (the better to inspire group participation) and a wide range of voices (mouse, fox, owl, snake and, yes, gruffalo). Suspense is just an added bonus from the team who brought us “Room on the Broom.”

Hear Imelda Staunton Read It

Looking for a jumbie, by tracey baptiste; illustrated by amber ren.

What are jumbies? you might wonder. They’re creatures from Caribbean stories, akin to fairies or trolls, Baptiste tells us in her introduction. “Some live in the forest,” she writes. “Some live in the water. Some soar up into the sky.” In this fantastical story, a little girl named Naya sets out to meet some jumbies for herself. Conveniently for the person turning the pages, she crosses paths with a bevy of creatures, each with the potential for a different voice — high and squeaky, deep and growly, it’s your call. My personal favorite is a jumbie of the douen variety, known for its small stature, backward feet and big mouth. Imagine Dobby, of “Harry Potter” fame.

Roar-Choo!, by Charlotte Cheng; illustrated by Dan Santat

What happens when a dragon gets a cold? You’re about to find out, with the help of Santat’s delightfully googly-eyed characters and Cheng’s refreshingly simple story. This is the book to grab if you’re so tired you can’t string two syllables together. The text is sparse, but the sound effects — sneezes and roars — provide ample opportunity for entertainment and decompression, with minimal energy expended. Add enough oomph to your a- choo s and your audience might chime in. Even better, slide your finger under recurring words and let beginning readers beat you to the punch.

Shy Willow , by Cat Min

The detail in this book! If you have time, you can linger over drawings within drawings — my favorites are the mini works of art hanging in the bunny Willow’s home (which is, adorably, a mailbox) — but you can also efficiently power through this tale about conquering fear and delivering a letter to the moon. “Shy Willow” includes fun-to-make noises — thumping, ripping, tearing — alongside text spaced in a way that conveniently cues different registers. For instance, as Willow falls “down, down, down,” the words slide to the bottom of the page. Odds are, your voice will follow.

Leonardo the Terrible Monster, by Mo Willems

Racing to school to be a mystery reader? For the uninitiated, this means showing up as a surprise (exciting) with zero input from your student about what would be appropriate/acceptable to read (bizarrely fraught, especially if your offspring are prone to mortification). Trust me, Leonardo is your go-to guy. Not only does Willems spin a clever yarn about a not-scary lunk of a monster, but he also tees up even the most bashful reader to be a hilariously entertaining performer. Words demanding emphasis appear in a different color; noises roll off the tongue (“Blaggle Blaggle!!”); and the payoff is an ALL-CAPS double-page spread of zaniness that’s sure to leave the toughest crowd in stitches.

Hear Mo Willems Read It

Lilly’s purple plastic purse , by kevin henkes.

There are two ways to tackle “Lilly.” The first is straightforward: Read through, start to finish, with zero grandstanding and you’ll still medal in the bedtime Olympics. (You’ve earned it, after 32 pages of text. Don’t forget to hydrate.) The second is the overachiever’s route, reading all the little “extras” sprinkled throughout the story. Broadcast Lilly’s thoughts in an adorable mouse voice. Give her peacenik dad a groovy hippie vibe. When Lilly apologizes to her teacher, Mr. Slinger, for rudeness, let your tone follow the downward spiral of “really reallys.” The only nonnegotiable is the note Mr. Slinger sends home with Lilly. I still quote it to my stressed-out teenager and weary young adults: “Today was a difficult day. Tomorrow will be better.”
