Auckland Museum Rooftop Tours

Auckland currently has a bit of an obsession with all things rooftop — you only have to check out any one of the new rooftop bars opening around the city to get the idea. But we've got the inside word on gaining access to a very exclusive rooftop with a difference.

Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum's Incredible Rooftop Tours are back to welcome the warmer months, giving you a chance to check out a part of the museum you've probably never seen before — as well as a new perspective of the city. From the roof of the museum, you'll be able to see from Waitematā Harbour to Rangitoto Island, across to Mount Eden, One Tree Hill and beyond.

museum rooftop tour

You'll also get to learn some of the fascinating histories behind one of the city's most iconic heritage buildings and the surrounding Domain. This is a great one for history nuts or visitors to the city — or we'd recommend taking Gran or Grandad for a fun morning out before grabbing a spot of brunch in the museum's cafe afterwards.

The Incredible Rooftop Tour season will run from November 1 2022 - 31 March 2023, with a daily session at 10.15am and an evening session at 6.30pm on select Tuesdays, to pair it with the museum's Twilight Tuesday sessions.

Tickets cost $30pp ($27 for museum members) — just be aware the tour includes stairs, so a certain level of mobility is required. Check out the museum's website for all the details.

Determined to find a better use for the roof than a dog park and chicken roost, City Museum’s founder, Bob Cassilly, and his crew added fountains and giant slides to reunite visitors with the Big Eli Ferris Wheel, the bus and the praying mantis that call the roof home. The rooftop is open nearly year-round (weather and other factors permitting) and access is free to our Gold Member Pass holders and just an additional $8 add-on to the price of a general admission ticket.

The Great Court and view of Reading Room at the centre.

The Great Court

The centre of the Great Court.

At the centre of the British Museum sits the largest covered public square in Europe, the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court.

Designed by Foster and Partners, the Great Court is a two-acre space enclosed by a spectacular glass roof with the world-famous Reading Room in the middle. The 6 December 2020 marked 20 years since the redesigned Great Court was opened. In that time, 113 million people have walked under the glass roof.

A place for all

Free and open every day to visitors, the Great Court is one of London's most unique spaces.

In the original Robert Smirke Great Court design, the courtyard was supposed to be a garden. However, from 1852 many bookstacks were built, and along with the Reading Room it became the home of the library department of the Museum.

The department stayed in the Great Court until 1997, when it was relocated to the new British Library building in St Pancras. Now empty, the Museum took the opportunity to once again reopen the space to the public.

The redesign

The new millennium.

An architectural competition to redesign the courtyard space was launched with three aims: reveal hidden spaces, revise old spaces and create new spaces. With more than 130 entries, the eventual winner was Foster and Partners.

The £100 million project was supported by grants of £30 million from the Millennium Commission and £15.75 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Great Court will benefit the millions of people who come to the British Museum every year. We can be confident that it will become a landmark associated with the new millennium. Queen Elizabeth II

The courtyard

Redesigning the great court.

The redesign of the Great Court allowed the previously hidden space to be seen once again, no longer lost to the general public.

Loosely based on Norman Foster's concept for the roof of the Reichstag in Berlin, a key aspect of the design was that with every step in the Great Court the vista changed giving the visitor a new surrounding.

Work on the Great Court's magnificent glass and steel roof – made from 3,212 panes of glass (no two of which are the same) – began in September 1999.

The Great Court was opened on 6 December 2000 by Queen Elizabeth II.

On completion, the redesign grew the Museum by 40 per cent. For the first time in more than 150 years, the new two-acre Great Court gave visitors the chance to move freely around the main floor of the Museum.

Creating new spaces

The redesign of the Great Court also provided two new gallery spaces: The Sainsbury Galleries, housing a display of objects from the Museum's Africa collection; and the Wellcome Trust Gallery, home to a series of long-term, cross-cultural, thematic exhibitions, currently based around Living and Dying.

A new space for temporary exhibitions, Room 35 – The Joseph Hotung Great Court Gallery – was also built.

The Ford Centre

Along with the ground floor, the redesign transformed the lower level of the Great Court too. This saw the development of the Ford Centre and educational facilities.

What was previously a storage room for Egyptian sculpture became the Ford Centre for Young Visitors.

Today, this space provides dedicated facilities and a range of tailor-made educational programmes for hundreds of thousands of young people who visit the Museum every year.

At weekends and during school holidays this area is used for family and community events.

Educational facilities

Also housed on the lower level of the Great Court is the Clore Education Centre, a space that has enabled the Museum to expand its educational role. It includes the:

  • BP Lecture Theatre
  • Hugh and Catherine Stevenson Theatre
  • Rooms A and B
  • Studio – used for art and craft activities
  • Claus Moser seminar room
  • Ford Centre for Young Visitors
  • Samsung Digital Discovery Centre

Its two auditoriums are home to a daily programme of lectures, film and videos, as well as conferences, concerts and other performances related to cultural festivals or special exhibitions.

Five additional multi-purpose rooms are also used for other programmes ranging from informal 'drop-in' sessions to courses for the general public and teacher training.

Visitor facilities

The new space allowed for the construction of new facilities including the Great Court Restaurant  on the upper level and the Court Cafés on the ground level of the Great Court.

A central part of the project on the south side of the site was the re-landscaping of the Museum forecourt, creating an impressive approach to the refurbished Weston Great Hall and the Great Court.

Enjoy our Heineken® tour and end with a breath-taking view over Amsterdam

About us - video - placeholder picture (no picture)

The Heineken Experience

The Heineken Experience is a brand experience within Heineken®’s oldest brewery, in the heart of Amsterdam. In 1988 the former brewery closed down, because we got too big for our boots. Today, the historical building serves as a venue where you can learn all about our Heineken® heritage, the brewing process, our sometimes crazy innovations, our sponsorings and the story behind the star. You’ll also learn about the best way to taste and enjoy your Heineken® beer.

After the 1.5 hour Heineken® tour, you go up to our top floor with a special elevator inside one of our old silos. On the top floor, you can learn more about how we used to transport ingredients from the city canals into the brewery and what the function of the “Moutzolder” (malt attic) used to be. Furthermore, you can enjoy one of Amsterdam’s most breath-taking views from our exclusive roof terrace.

I know, right? When I found out I knew I immediately needed to get to the Met rooftop garden bar. Art and cocktails, what more do you need?

Right about now you might be wondering, “how do I get to this rooftop bar?” I want to enjoy a poptail on the top of one of the world’s most famous museums.

Guess what? You don’t have to be a celeb or pay a ton of money to get to the Met rooftop garden bar. In fact, you don’t even have to get a drink to hang out at this bar. When I went, most people weren’t drinking.

museum rooftop tour

So back up, what exactly are we talking about here?

Ok, the Met (a shortened name for the Metropolitan Museum of Art ) is the largest art museum in the United States. This museum is the crown jewel of museum mile in New York City. You could easily spend days exploring this museum. There are so many different exhibits, including Egyptian artifacts, suits of armor, and Van Gogh paintings.

But that short description really doesn’t even begin to cover it. The Met actually has two locations: The Met Fifth Avenue (the main location) and The Met Cloisters.

The rooftop bar we are talking about is located on top of the Met Fifth Avenue building. This is the main and iconic building you are probably thinking about anyways.

General admission tickets to the Met cost $30 for adults. These tickets are valid for same-day admission at both Met locations. If you have a valid New York State ID or you are a student in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut you can purchase a pay-what-you-wish ticket.

To visit the Met rooftop garden you must purchase a ticket to the museum.

The Met Fifth Avenue is open: Sunday-Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Friday & Saturday from 10:00 am – 9:00 pm.

The Met Rooftop Garden Bar is open seasonally on Sunday-Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00 am- 4:00 pm and Friday & Saturday from 11:00 am- 8:00 pm .

As we mentioned earlier, a ticket to the Met is required to visit the Met rooftop garden bar. Met tickets cost $30 for adults and $17 for students.

New York residents and students in NJ, NY, and CT and purchase a pay-what-you-wish ticket.

The Met Fifth Avenue is located at 1000 5th Ave New York, New York. You can get here by taking the 4, 5, or 6 train to 86th Street and walking west towards 5th Avenue. Or, take the 1 train to 86th Street, then the M86 crosstown bus across Central Park to Fifth Avenue. Another option is to take the C train to 81st Street, then the M79 bus across Central Park to Fifth Avenue.

Once inside the museum, it can be a little confusing to find the rooftop bar. This museum is large and might be overwhelming. Of course, you should spend some time exploring the museum. But when you are ready to get to the rooftop, take the elevator from the European Sculpture and Decorative Arts Gallery 555 to the 5th floor.

Good to Know

You don’t have to purchase a drink to spend time on the rooftop. There is a bar, but there aren’t any tables. Most people were on the rooftop to enjoy the view. So, don’t feel like you will be out of place if you just want to go for the view and not pay $18 for a drink.

Met Rooftop Garden Bar

How to Visit the Met Rooftop Garden Bar- The Adventuring Millennial

The Met Fifth Avenue Bar is the perfect place to enjoy a summer happy hour. The bar’s official name is the Cantor Rooftop Garden Bar. This large space also often features contemporary art sculptures. You will find a bar, benches, and plenty of space to soak in the views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline.

There is no charge to visit the bar. You can simply go to enjoy the view. But, if you are here for a drink, you have some fantastic options. Here’s the most current menu:

museum rooftop tour

When I visited, I couldn’t pass up the Instagram-worthy poptails. These drinks are basically a glass of prosecco with a popsicle. The menu has changed a bit since I first visited but don’t worry, you can still get a Boozy Pop if you want!

The menu also includes a selection of specialty mocktails, beer, and wine. For an extra charge, you can turn the mocktails into cocktails. Cheers!

What to Expect

museum rooftop tour

When you visit the bar, it will probably be slightly crowded (this is NYC after all). But the whole area was bigger than I expected. You shouldn’t have trouble getting a picture with the skyline, you just might need to be patient.

Each summer the Met puts on a Roof Garden Commission. While you’re here, check out this year’s installation .

Drinks are expensive (I’m talking $18 cocktails here) but of course you are paying a premium for the view and experience.

How to Visit the Met Rooftop Garden Bar- The Adventuring Millennial

Honestly, I felt like a celebrity hanging out on this rooftop. It’s not somewhere I would recommend as a go-to bar, but you should check it out at least once. And it is a great place to bring visitors.

What Else Can You Do at the Met?

Don’t get me wrong, the Met rooftop garden bar is amazing. And you should spend some time there. But you paid a good amount to be at the museum, so you should also check out the exhibits.

But don’t let yourself get overwhelmed. The Met is the largest art museum in the country. It holds more than 2 million pieces. You won’t see everything, so don’t force yourself to rush through the museum. Check out the website or map to decide the exhibits you are most interested in. Or, just wander for a while and let yourself get a bit lost. There are so many interesting exhibits to discover.

Don’t miss:

Temple of Dendur – This ancient Egyptian temple was given to the United States by the Egyptian government in an effort to preserve the ruins.

Washington Crossing the Deleware – Leutze’s iconic painting that most Americans grew up seeing in our history textbooks.

The Arms and Armor Exhibit – It’s not every day that you get to see a suit of armor and the Met has over 1,000 pieces on display in this exhibit.

Nearby Attractions

The Met Fifth Avenue is located on Museum Mile, so there are a few other museums nearby to check out:

  • Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum – Art museum housed in the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright building.
  • Cooper Hewit Smithsonian Design Museum – Design museum dedicated to historical and modern aesthetics.
  • Museum of the City of New York – This museum focuses on all things NYC and it’s quickly become one of my favorites. There’s a great permanent exhibit on the history of the city but the museum has ever-changing exhibits focused on different NYC-related topics.

If the Met was enough of a museum for you, I get it. There are some other great attractions nearby:

  • Central Park- The Met rooftop garden overlooks Central Park. Spend some time relaxing in the grass, riding a bike, admiring the Alice in Wonderland Statue, or following a self-guided walking tour .
  • The Plaza Hotel- If you want to take a walk through Central Park, you can easily reach the iconic Plaza Hotel. This is just over a mile from the Met, but the impressive building is worth the walk. You will also find an upscale food hall in the Plaza if you are hungry.

So, who is ready to visit the Met rooftop garden? I know I want to go back!

A family night at the museum — sleepovers and culture after dark for tots to teens

Embark on your own family night at the museum with these sleepover experiences.

From drifting off beside a dinosaur skeleton in London to watching dancers on the streets of the Maltese capital Valletta, there are plenty of ways for families to extend cultural fun beyond normal daytime hours and into or even through the night.

1. Natural History Museum, London

Best for: animal fans Just down the road from the Science Museum, the popular prehistory-themed Dino Snores sleepovers for seven- to 11-year-olds sell out fast. Families get to explore galleries by torchlight, create a dinosaur T-shirt and watch a child-focused show by a resident scientist. VIP (Very Important Palaeontologists) ticket-holders also get a camp bed near Sophie the Stegosaurus, access to an animal-handling show and a snack box for late-night munchies.

2.   Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Florida

Best for: space nerds NASA’s epic visitor centre at Cape Canaveral, home of many of the US’s space launches, runs sleepovers in two different but equally thrilling locations: a defunct space orbiter vehicle called Space Shuttle Atlantis or the Apollo/Saturn V Center, where a Saturn V moon rocket is displayed. The experience is aimed at small groups of 10- to 14-year-olds travelling with a chaperone, and has educational elements including STEM-based challenges and scavenger hunts.

3. Science Museum, London

Best for: aspiring astronauts   Designed for seven- to 11-year-olds, this vast museum dedicated to human ingenuity runs space-inspired Astronights. The experience includes workshops, science shows and sessions in both the museum’s IMAX cinema and its Wonderlab, which has seven zones dedicated to scientific phenomena. If you upgrade to a VIP ticket, you get an airbed instead of a camping mat, plus extra treats at breakfast.

4. British Museum, London

Best for: history-lovers   Created for eight- to 15-year- olds, the nocturnal adventures at this vast repository of artefacts from around the globe have a changing historic theme. Workshops, activities and storytelling help bring the past vividly to life. Families then bed down in the Egyptian and Assyrian galleries, surrounded by kings and gods from the ancient world. After breakfast the next morning, guests are privy to an exclusive gallery trail before the museum opens to the public.

5.   National Museum Cardiff

Best for: budding palaeontologists As an alternative to the popular Natural History Museum experience in London, this Welsh venue invites kids aged six to 12 on sleepovers centred around its geology and natural history exhibits. It includes a torchlit tour, craft workshops inspired by fossils from the collection and a pre-bedtime movie. VIP ticket-holders also get a visit from ‘Ranger Chris’ with one of his reptiles, time with a palaeontologist and a peek into the museum’s store of dinosaur bones.

6. Grand Théâtre, Geneva

Best for: drama students   A Swiss institution built in 1879, retaining its original beaux-arts facade, this opera house and ballet venue organises sleepovers open to all ages. Stays include a tour of the building and its maze-like backstage areas, set to a soundtrack of music from days gone by. Afterwards, you’ll bed down with your sleeping mat, sleeping bag or blanket, pillow and teddy bear in the grand foyer with its chandeliers, gilded surfaces, frescoes, wood panelling and lavish paintings.

7. Intrepid Museum, New York City

Best for: Top Gun fans Travellers to the Big Apple can sleep over in this museum on the Hudson, housed inside a Second World War aircraft carrier. The exhibits focus on American military and maritime history, and Operation Slumber gives families with kids aged six to 17 the opportunity to delve deeper into what it takes to live, eat and sleep aboard an aircraft carrier. The experience includes a torchlight guided tour of the flight deck, unlimited simulator rides and a pop-up planetarium.
