One of the legends alluding to the temple is about a spider and an elephant. There was once a spider in the forest here, which used to worship the lingam . Seeing that the dry leaves falling on it made it look dirty, it built its web on top of it. Seeing it, an elephant thought it was dust and continued to pour water on it as a form of devotion, which angered the spider. The spider eventually killed the elephant, while dying in the process. Kapaleeswarar Temple, Mylapore

One of the most well-known Shiva temples in Chennai is Kapaleeswarar, which is dedicated to Arulmigu Kapleeshwar, a form of Lord Shiva, and Goddess Karpagambal, an appearance of Parvati. Special Things to Know About the Temple

• As per legend, in a meeting, Brahma did not pay attention to Shiva, which made him angry and he removed one of Brahma’s heads. Brahma then came down to Mylapore and installed a linga here to please Shiva. Ever since, Lord Shiva is worshipped here.
• Another legend goes, when Shiva was narrating Panchakshara Mantra to Parvathi, a peacock distracted her, which enrages Shiva. He turned her into a peahen. To return back to her own form, as Shiva advised, Parvathy started worshipping Shiva in Mylapore to get rid of her curse.
• Parvathy used to worship Shiva under the Punnai tree, which still exists in the courtyard of the temple.
• There is also a statue of a peacock that symbolises Parvathy.
• Goddess Parvathy here is known as Karpagambal or Karpagavali, which means the heavenly tree ‘Karpagam’.
• Goddess Parvathy here is also known as the ‘Goddess of the Wish Yielding Tree’ that fulfils every wish asked for.

Marundeeswarar Temple in Thiruvanmiyur is one of the top 10 temples in Chennai that deserves a second visit. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who appears here as Marundeeswar or Aushadeeswarar, referred to as the ‘God of Medicine.’ The largest temple in Chennai, Marundeeswarar Temple covers an area of one-acre land and is considered one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. The magnificent architectural beauty of the temple is a sight to behold which features Dravidian architecture with a blend of Chola art and Pallava Dynasty.

The temple was extensively glorified in the seventh and eighth centuries by Nayanars (Saivite Saints), Tirugnana Sambandar, and Appar. The Chola Kingdom enlarged the temple in the eleventh century. Furthermore, due to its name, the Marundeeswarar Temple has long been a popular destination for worship, particularly among those who are ill or have other health issues. The food served here, known as prasadam, is a concoction of holy ash, water, and milk that is said to have healing properties.

The temple is one of the finest examples of Dravidian architecture. It features two entrances, one in the west and the other is in the east side. Kalikambal Temple, George Town

According to the architecture of this temple, it is suggested to be constructed during the Chola era. Vada Vedaranyam is the place’s ancient name. In this temple, devotees love to celebrate their 81st birthday or “Sadabhishekam ”. Tamilians refer to this as “Thoonganai Maadam” (thoong(um) = sleeping, aanai = elephant, and maadam = top of a temple). It is crucial to notice that the Navagraham is in the shape of an octagon and is situated on “Padma Pedam” at this temple. This temple is renowned for being a Navagraha dosham parihara sthalam.

• This is one of the temples where Sage Agasthiar is said to have received the blessing of seeing the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. A relief in the sanctum sanctorum shows the lord and goddess in their wedding pose, behind the main deity.

• As the legend goes, Lord Indra once gave his divine cow ‘kamdhenu’ to Sage Vashishtha.

• As a solution, he had to make a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva between Mylapore and Thiruvanmiyur in the northwestern direction, the Holy Cow Kamadhenu can be redeemed.
• He then commands the clouds (Kar) to shower and cool the region, resulting in the creation of a beautiful, lush pasture. He builds a Linga and prays to Lord Shiva, who blesses Lord Indra by elevating him to the rank of Gopathi and redeems the sacred cow ( Lord of Cows).

When it comes to temples in South India , the state of Tamil Nadu dominates with its ancient towering Dravidian masterpieces that often have brightly painted sculptures on their gopuram (towers). These temples, which display some of India's greatest temple architecture, are the backbone of Tamil culture. Here's where to find the most magnificent South India temples. Many of these places have more than just the one temple, so do look around.

Madurai, Tamil Nadu

Ancient Madurai in Tamil Nadu is home to the most impressive and important temple in South India—the Meenakshi temple . If you only see one South Indian temple, this temple should be it. The temple complex covers 15 acres, and has 4,500 pillars and 12 towers -- it's massive! Most astonishing of all is its many sculptures. The 12-day Chithirai Festival , featuring a reenacted celestial wedding of the temple's god and goddess, is held in Madurai during April each year.

Thanjavur (Tanjore), Tamil Nadu

Thanjavur emerged as the stronghold of Tamil culture in the 11th century, with Chola king Raja Raja I at the helm. The powerful Cholas built more than 70 temples in Thanjavur, with the most outstanding one being the Brihadeswara temple (known as the Big Temple). This temple is one of three Great Living Chola Temples listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It turned 1,000 years old in 2010, also making it among the oldest temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in India. Constructed solely out of stone, its dome rises to over 60 meters, and the passage around the sanctum is adorned with Chola frescoes.

Kumbakonam and Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Tamil Nadu

You'll find the other two UNESCO-listed Great Living Chola Temples at Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Kumbakonam, about an hour northeast of Thanjavur. The royal temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram was built not long after Thanjavur's Big Temple in the 11th century, when Rajendra Chola I relocated the Chola capital there in celebration of victory. Its design is similar to the Big Temple but on a lesser scale, and it features an enormous stone Nandi (bull). Just west of Kumbakonam, at Darasuram, the 12th century Airavatesvara temple is special for its art and exquisite intricate stone carvings. Kumbakonam abounds with temples and is a fabulous place for temple hopping! If you only have time to see a few, the 13th century Sarangapani temple (dedicated to Lord Vishnu) is most impressive, with a shrine in the form of a horse-drawn chariot.

Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu

Popularly known as a "City of a Thousand Temples", Kanchipuram is not just famous for its distinctive silk saris . Located around two hours southwest of Chennai , on the main road to Bangalore, it was once the capital of the Pallava dynasty. Today, only a 100 or so temples remain, many of them with unique architectural beauty. The diversity of temples is particularly noteworthy. There are both Shiva and Vishnu temples, built by various rulers (the Cholas, Vijayanagar kings, Muslims, and British also ruled this part of Tamil Nadu) who each refined the design.

Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu

The special feature at Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameshwaram is its astonishing pillared hallway, regarded as the longest in India, lining its perimeter. The seemingly endless rows of carved pillars have a mesmerizing painted ceiling. The temple is located only 100 meters from the sea (Agni Theertham) and pilgrims take a bath there first, before going inside the temple and bathing in its 22 wells. The water is considered to be holy and purifying to mind and body. Rameshwaram, located on a small island at the tip of the Indian Peninsula, holds a special place in Hindu mythology as it's where Lord Ram built a bridge across the sea to rescue Sita from the clutches of the demon Ravan, in Sri Lanka .

Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu

Chidambaram is off the tourist trail and people mainly head there to visit its Nataraj temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva performing the cosmic dance. This ancient temple is quite unusual because it follows Vedic rituals, set by the sage Patanjali, unlike other Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu whose agamic rituals are based on Sanskrit scriptures. The Vedic rituals are centered on fire, and yagna (fire sacrifice) is performed every morning as part of the puja in the Kanaka Sabha (Golden Hall). Non-Hindus can see it. Get there around 8.00 a.m. The temple priests, known as Podu Dikshitars, were said to be brought from the abode of Lord Shiva by Patanjali himself! The nearby Pichavaram mangroves make an interesting side trip.

Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu

Arunachaleswar temple sits at the base of holy Mount Arunachala in Tiruvannamalai, about four hours southwest of Chennai. It's another large temple complex, with nine towers and three inner courtyards. Lord Shiva is worshiped there as the element of fire. Pilgrims flock to the town every full moon to walk around the mountain. Numerous shrines and sadhus (Hindu holy men) can be found along the path. Once a year, during the Karthikai Deepam Festival on the full moon between November and December, a huge fire is lit on top of the mountain and blazes for days. This holy town has a strong spiritual energy about it, especially some of the meditation caves that can be found in various spots up the mountain.

Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Tamil Nadu

Tiruchirappalli , or Trichy as it's informally called, is home to the largest temple in India -- the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple on Srirangam Island. It's dedicated to a reclining form of Lord Vishnu, although only Hindus are permitted inside the inner sanctum to see it. This remarkable temple dates back 2,000 years to the early Chola-era in Tamil Nadu. It occupies a mammoth 156 acres and has 21 gopuram (towers). The main tower, which is 73 meters high, is the second tallest temple tower in Asia. In addition, don't miss the Rock Fort Temple Complex, built in spectacular style on a rocky outcrop above the city. As is to be expected, it affords a panoramic view. The complex consists of three Hindu temples and a fort. The oldest of these temples was cut into the side of the rock by Pallava king Mahendravarman I in the 6th century. Belur, Karnataka

One of the top places to visit in Karnataka , Belur is home to the marvelous 12th century Chennakeshava temple, built by the ruling Hoysala dynasty to commemorate their victory over the Cholas and dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It took a long 103 years to complete and is adorned with some of India's most celebrated sculptures. You'll find many other temples belonging to the Hoysala Empire in Belur, as their capital was located there before its downfall from Mughal attack in the 14th century.

Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh

Extremely popular with pilgrims, the sprawling temple complex of Lord Venkateswara (Lord Vishnu) is situated above Tirupati in the southern part of Andhra Pradesh. Those who are able can walk the 4,000 steps up the hill to the temple, which takes two to four hours. Otherwise, it's easier to go by bus. The temple is one of the most visited and wealthiest in India, as can be seen by its gold-plated dome. It's been patronized by all the various rulers and kings over the years. In recent times, Bollywood stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai prayed at the temple after their marriage in 2007. Keep in mind that there are a number of challenges when visiting Tirupati Temple, including huge crowds, making it suited to serious pilgrims only.

Pattadakal, Karnataka

The Group of Monuments at Pattadakal is one of India's little-known UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It consists of nine Hindu temples and a Jain sanctuary, surrounded by many smaller shrines. What's particularly striking about it is masterful blend of Dravidian (southern) and Nagara (northern) styles of temple architecture. The standout temple is the Virupaksha temple, built in the 8th century by queen Lokamahadevi of the Chalukya dynasty to commemorate her husband's victory over the Pallavas of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. Its interior is covered in beautiful carvings and sculptures, including episodes from The Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita .

Aihole, Karnataka

Not far from Pattadakal, former Chalukya capital Aihole has more than 100 temples. However, they were constructed much before the ones at Pattadakal, and their designs are considered to be experimental and not as refined. The Durga Temple Complex is the focal point. It has 12 Hindu temples dating back to the 6th-8th centuries. Another highlight is the 6th century Ravana Phadi cave temple, uphill from the Durga Temple Complex. It features large sculpture panels and is thought to be the earliest monument of the Badami Chalukyas. Pattadakal and Aihole can be visited on a side trip from Hampi.

Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu

Off-the-beaten-track, the historic Kudumiyanmalai Temple Complex is centered around a naked granite hill near Pudukottai, a bit over an hour south of two hours northeast of Tiruchirappalli. The two main structures are an ancient rock-cut cave temple localled called Melakkoil and large Sikkanathaswamy temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The was built in phases by many rulers from the Cholas to the Nayaks and is adorned with sculptures. More than 100 inscriptions can be found on the walls of the temples. Of most importance is the 7th century musical inscription engraved into the rock on the side of the cave temple. It's recognized as one of the earliest surviving sources of Indian music notation and outlays the grammatical notes of Carnatic music.

Vellore, Tamil Nadu

You've no doubt heard of the Golden Temple in Amritsar but did you know there's a golden temple in Tamil Nadu too? This dazzling modern-day temple was constructed by a spiritual organization headed by Sri Sakthi Amma (also known as Narayani Amma) and completed in 2007. It's said to be the only temple in the world that's fully covered in gold -- all 1,500 kilograms of it! Even the deity, goddess Mahalakshmi, is adorned with gold and diamond jewellery. The temple was plated with gold to attract visitors and impart messages of spiritual wisdom, which are written on the long pathway leading to the temple's entrance.

Lepakshi, Andhra Pradesh

The small village of Lepakshi, in the Anantapur district of southern Andhra Pradesh, can be visited on a peaceful day trip from Bangalore in Karnataka. It's renowned for its Vijayanagar style of architecture, in particular the Veerabhadra temple that dates back to the 16h century. Features include a collossal monolithic stone Nandi (bull) statue, unusual pillar that hangs from the temple roof, and some of the finest mural paintings of the Vijayanagar kings. There's also a Ganesh statue carved into a boulder, and stone Naga (snake) sheltering the temple's black granite s hivalingam (representation of Lord Shiva).

One of its kinds in the world, this Golden Temple of Tamil Nadu is surrounded by water and offers a magnificent sight to behold during the night.

3. Bala Murugan Temple, Siruvapuri

Tamil Nadu is home to several famous Murugan temples, and one of them is the Bala Murugan temple in Siruvapuri. Murugan is another name for Lord Karthikeya, son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The temple is 500 years old and famous among devotees to fulfil their wishes. Owing to this, hundreds of devotees visit this Murugan temple in Tamil Nadu each day to worship Lord Karthikeya and wish upon it. Besides, the temple complex has a shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan and his consort Devi Valli as depicted in wedlock. It is visited by couples who wish to get married.

4. Navapashanam Temple, Devipattinam  

Navagraha temples in Tamil Nadu are a set of nine temples, each of them dedicated to one of the nine planetary deities. One of these famous Navagraha temples is the Navapashanam Temple located in Devipattinam, Tamil Nadu. The significance of this temple centres on the fact that devotees can worship all the nine planetary deities at once. It is also a famous Hindu pilgrimage site along with the Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameshwaram, and the Adi Jagannatha Perumal Temple at Thiruppullani. Devotees believe that the shrines of the planetary deities at this Navagraha temple in Tamil Nadu were built by Lord Ram, an avatar of Lord Vishnu.

5. Kumbakonam Brahma Temple, Kumbakonam  

Kumbakonam Brahma Temple in Tamil Nadu is one of the famous pilgrimage sites for the Hindus that is located in Thanjavur district. The temple is primarily dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Vedanarayana Perumal. Its sanctum also has a deity of Brahma which is placed on the right side of Lord Vishnu’s deity, along with Goddesses Saraswati and Gayatri. On the left side is Yoganarasimha with Bhoodevi and Sridevi. Since Lord Brahma is said to be cursed for not being worshipped, the Kumbakonam Brahma Temple in Tamil Nadu is one of the rare temples dedicated to him in India.

6. Brihadeeswarar Temple, Thanjavur  

Brihadeeswarar or Brihadisvara is yet another famous Shiva temple in Tamil Nadu. It was built during the Chola Dynasty in the 11 century AD. The temple is located in the Thanjavur district and enjoys the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the Great Living Chola Temples in India. Besides its magnificent structure, the 216 feet tall Vimana, along with its 80 tonnes Kumban, stands in the temple complex and attracts tourists interested to learn about great architectural designs from Indian history. As one of the famous Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu, it is visited by thousands of devotees every day.  

7. Arulmigu Brahmapureeswarar Temple, Tirupattur  

The mythological reference of this temple tells us the story of Lord Brahma’s overwhelming pride which made him feel more powerful than Shiva. This sense of pride provoked Lord Shiva to destroy Lord Brahma’s fifth head and curse him to lose all his powers. Realizing his mistake, Lord Brahma offered huge penance to Lord Shiva at various places. During his pilgrimage, he worshipped the Lord under a tree at the temple’s site and took water for the rituals from the nearby tank, which was named Brahma Theertham. As Brahma worshipped Lord Shiva at this place, it is named Brahmapureeswarar.

8. Ekambareswarar Temple, Kanchipuram  

Tamil Nadu has many famous temples that are dedicated to Lord Shiva. One of them is the Ekambareswarar Temple, located in Kanchipuram. It is famous as one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalas and signifies the element Earth. Devotees visit the temple to worship Lord Shiva, as Ekambareswarar or Ekambaranathar, in the form of a Lingam and an idol Prithvi Lingam. Legend has it that Goddess Parvati used to worship Lord Shiva in the form of Prithvi Lingam (Shiva Lingam made of sand) at this place, under a mango tree. The lord, impressed by this gesture, materialized in person and married the Goddess.

9. Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameshwaram  

Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameshwaram is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples and a holy pilgrimage site for the Hindus. It is believed that the Shiva Lingam placed at the temple was built and worshipped by Lord Ram before crossing the bridge to Lanka, and that is where the name Ramanathaswamy was derived. Lord Ram wanted to seek forgiveness from his lord for the sins he would commit during the war against Ravana. He requested Hanuman to bring a Lingam from the Himalayas. However, with his delayed arrival, Lord Ram decided to build a Lingam from sand, which is placed at the sanctum. The temple has another lingam which was brought from Kailash and is called Vishwalingam.

10. Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Chennai  

This temple is located in Mylapore, a district of Chennai in Tamil Nadu. It was built in the 7th century CE under the reign of Pallava King. However, the original structure was destroyed by the Portuguese, and the Kapaleeshwarar Temple structure that stands today was restored by the Vijayanagara Kings in the 16th century. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is among the famous pilgrimage sites that attract devotees from all over the country. Legends say that Goddess Parvati, as Mayil, performed a huge penance for Lord Shiva at the site. The temple complex has a small shrine of the Goddess in the form of a peahen placed under the Punnai tree and depicts her story.

11. Elk Hill Murugan Temple, Ooty  

Besides being one of the popular hill stations in Tamil Nadu , Ooty is home to the Elk Hill Murugan Temple, dedicated to Lord Murugan. This famous Murugan temple in Tamil Nadu catches your eye for its similarity to the Batu Caves in Malaysia. The temple is perched atop a small hill named Elk Hill and surrounded by a serene atmosphere with picturesque views. Along with the presiding 40 feet deity of Lord Murugan that resembles the deity at Batu Caves, the temple also houses the deities of Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, and Goddess Shakti, also known as Kali.

12. Kumari Amman Temple, Kanyakumari  

Dedicated to the virgin Goddess Kanya Kumari, an avatar of Goddess Shakti, the temple dates back to 3000 years. Its complex has a deity in the form of a beautiful girl holding a string of beads in her right hand. Mythological beliefs state that Goddess Shakti took this avatar upon being requested by the Devtas to save them from the Demon King Banasura. As he was blessed by Lord Shiva for only being vanquished by a virgin girl, the Goddess took this avatar to defeat him. However, enchanted by her beauty, the Banasura tried to force her into a marriage that eventually became the cause of his death.

13. Nagaraja Temple, Nagercoil  

Nagercoil is a beautiful town that offers peaceful and serene sightseeing places in Tamil Nadu . However, what attracts devotees to this town is its famous Nagaraja Temple. Located in Nagercoil, the temple is dedicated to the King of Serpents - Nagaraja. The inscriptions and literary evidence present at the temple complex indicate being worshipped by both Jains and Hindus. The original temple built in the pre 12th century only had the Jain iconography of the Tirthankaras and Padmavati Devi. New Hindu shrines were added to its complex in the 17th century. Since then, the iconographies of both religions have been a part of the temple’s sanctum.

14. Thillai Nataraja Temple, Chidambaram  

As the name says, the temple is dedicated to the Nataraja avatar of Lord Shiva, a divine dancer. It is among the famous ancient temples in Tamil Nadu known for their religious and architectural significance. People believe that this temple is located at the centre of Earth’s magnetic field. Its sanctum is named Chitsabha and houses the deities of Natraja and his consort Sivakamasundri. The temple was built in the 11th century during the Pallava rule. It is one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalas dedicated to the five elements of the universe, namely Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Space, and signifies the element Space.

15. Annamalaiyar Temple, Thiruvannamalai  

We conclude our list with another most significant Pancha Bhoota Sthala that signifies the element Agni. The temple is located on the foot of Annamalai hills and dates back to the 9th century of the Chola Dynasty. It is built in Dravidian style architecture and showcases the brilliant skills of artisans of that time. While the temple is usually crowded with tourists and locals, the footfall increases during the annual ‘Karthigai Deepam Festival’. Devotees celebrate the festival wearing vibrant attires, and their huge possession comprises drummers and dancers.

Most Famous Temples in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is often referred as the ‘The Land of Temples’ for its matchless mastery in temple architecture. These temples are the evidence of the glorious heritage of the Tamil Nadu region. Tamil Nadu temples were built over a vast period of time by many dynasties. These Temples were constructed by the Pallavas, Pandyas, Vijayanagar rulers, the Nayakas and particularly the Cholas.

The Tamil Nadu temples are the best gifts that Dravidians left to the present people of Tamil Nadu. The inheritance of ancient Dravidian art and culture is still preserved here in all its grandeur. The Tamil Nadu Temples were also much more than a place of worship.

They were also a place for social gathering, for education, for celebration etc. Tamil Nadu temples tour gives you excellent chance to visually perceive these wonders.

Temples of Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu reflects early Dravidian art and culture, described by ornamented temples with soaring towers known as gopurams (tower over the entrance). There are more than 30,000 temples in Tamil Nadu built by many dynasties. The earliest temples were built by brick and mortar. Upto about 700 CE temples were hollow out of rocks. These temples share the similar physical features like the gopurams over the entrance gates on all the four directions, the Vimana (tower over the sanctum) and the large halls and passageway. The Mighty Cholas added many ornamental halls (mandapams) to temples and erected large gopurams. The Pandya Style is known for the appearance of huge towers, high wall attachments and giant towered gateways. The Vijayanagar Style is noted for the complexity and beauty particularly for the ornamented monolithic pillars. The Naik style is well known for the addition of large circumambulatory paths and huge pillared halls.

Kailasanatha Temple

Kailasanatha Temple is dedicated to Shiva who is believed to reside in the Kailash mountains. This is the oldest temple in Kanchipuram and is also the most beautiful one. The temple structure reflects the Dravidian architecture. It was built in the 7th century by Pallava king Rajasimha, while the front part was added later by his son King Varman III. The remaining parts of 8th century murals will give you the idea about the advanced architecture of the ancient times. The original temples must have looked splendid, it seems.

There are as many as 58 small shrines in the honor of Shiva and Parvati and their sons – Ganesh and Murugan. Non-Hindus are not allowed to enter the sanctum where a spectacular lingam is placed, which is also the third largest in India. You can hire a guide here that will not cost much but will help you to explore the place better. This temple remain open all days of week

Ramanathaswamy Temple

The Ramanathaswamy Temple is a beautiful example of Dravidian architecture. The temple remains open from 4 am in the morning till 8:30 pm with a two hours closing from 1pm to 3pm. The structure of the temple is quite famous for its four brilliant corridors. There are sculpted pillars aligned to these corridors. The temple was constructed in phases and the actual construction work began as early as in 12th century. Many additions were made to the structure, the most important among them is a 53 meters high gopuram. There are 22 Teerthams within the temple where the pilgrims take bath and purify themselves. The water in these Teerthams is considered as holy and pilgrims also drink from them. The inner sanctum is only allowed for Hindus where you can find the paintings which will depict the original Rameswaram as per Hindu mythology.

Kolavizhi Amman Temple

According to legend, a visit to the Kolavizhi Amman Temple is enough to rid a person of all his ailments and diseases. Dedicated to the Goddess Pattu Kolavizhi Amman (a form of the Divine Mother) the temple is located in Chennai.

Kumari Amman Temple

This is a temple devoted to Kanya Goddess Devi and located in Kanyakumari, who single handedly conquered the demons and secured freedom for the people. The temple is a nice place to do the prayer. It opens early morning around 4:30 am. While entering into the temple men have to remove their shirts. Cameras and videos are not allowed inside the temple. If you enjoy Cars Festival, where an idol of deity is taken for the procession, then you should go here in the month of May or June.

Samayapuram Mariamman Temple

Presided by Goddess Mariamman –the popular Hindu Goddess of Rain in the southern parts of India, Samayapuram Mariamman temple lures devotees to the small village of Samayapuram, Tiruchirappalli. Best visited during the period of Chithirai Chariot Festival, which is celebrated with a lot of fanfare and fervor for 13 days in April; this venue of great religious significance is thronged all across the year.

During this very popular festival, you can feast your eyes upon the deity pulled by devotees in an amazingly beautiful Chariot Car. Visited by lakhs of devotees during the festival, this temple is best visited for the Samayapurathu Mariamman —which is clearly visible from the main entrance. A must visit for one and all!

Thillai Kali Amman Temple

Probably constructed under the aegis of King Kopperunchinga who ruled from 1229 to 1278, the Thillai Kali Amman Temple is a known Shakti Sthala. Located on the northern part of the Chidambaram temple, the Thillai Kali Amman Temple is very popular and devotees come here to seek blessings and ask for health and prosperity. According to legends, Shiva and Shakti decided to compete to decide who is a better dancer. During the course of the dance in which they were copying each other’s movements, Shiva struck a pose with his leg raised high in the air.

Shakti being a woman could not follow as this would have compromised her modesty and hence lost to him. Following the rules of the dance contest, Shakti had to leave the spot and reside outside. She did so and moved to the edge of the complex, and a Kali temple was established there and dedicated to her.

Jagannathan Temple

One of the more popular temples in Chennai, the Jagannathan Temple is dedicated to one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu, that as Lord Jagannath. Following the same set up as the famous and original Lord Jagannath Temple at Puri, the idols of Balaram and Subhadra are placed on either side of Lord Jagannathan in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Similarly, the chariot procession is also carried out during the festival of the Rath Yatra which is held every year in June-July.

Viswaroopa Adhivyadhihara Sri Bhaktha Anjaneyaswami Temple

Located on the outskirts of Chennai, the Viswaroopa Adhivyadhihara Sri Bhaktha Anjaneyaswami Temple, has a huge thirty two feet high black granite statue of Lord Anjaneyaswami right up in front. The main temple is flanked by two temples dedicated to Lord Rama and Lord Krishna. Clean, peaceful and serene, the temple offers Prasadam to the devotees throughout the day as well as feeding the poor for free. A visit to this place to experience the serenity and spirituality that this temple can offer will only enrich your mind and soul.

Dhenupureeswarar Temple

Located at Patteeswaram, the Dhenupureeswarar Temple, Tamil Nadu is associated with many legends. According to them, it is here that Goddess Parvati did penance to marry Lord Shiva while standing on one leg. This is also the place where Kamdhenu, the heavenly cow and later her daughter, Patti worshiped Lord Shiva by showering the lingam with their milk. The deity is named after Kamdhenu and the village is named after Patti. Lord Rama after killing Ravana came here to atone for his sin. Rishi Vishwamitra was given the Gayatri Mantra here and conferred the title of Brahmarishi.

A more contemporary legend states that when Thirugnanasambandar, the child saint visited the temple on a rather hot day, Lord Shiva instructed his Ganas to shelter his devotee by holding a pearl canopy over his head. Eager to see his devotee, the Lord also asked Nandi, his steed to move to the side. Nandi did so, and when you visit the temple, you will see the statues of Nandi towards the side and not in front of the sanctum, as it usually is everywhere else.

According to inscriptions, the idol of Goddess Durga was moved to this temple by a Chola King, from her shrine by the fortress gate. An amazingly beautiful temple with three Prakarams, five towers and fine and intricate sculptures and panels, the temple should be visited if only for the artistic work done here.

Brahmapureeswarar Temple

According to legend, Lord Shiva once cursed Lord Brahma and took away all his powers. Relenting later, he restored the power back with Lord Brahma as the Creator of the Universe – the Brahmapureeswarar Temple, Tamil Nadu stands on the site where this sacred event took place. The legend tells how Lord Brahma in his pride as the Creator, incurred the wrath of Lord Shiva who cursed him and rendered him powerless. To atone for his mistake, Brahma undertook a pilgrimage of all the Shiva temples. At Brahmapureeswarar Temple Lord Brahma took upon himself to set up twelve Lingams, which can still be seen today. Appeased by the penance of Brahma and heeding to an appeal by Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva came to this spot and freed Lord Brahma of the curse. He restored the powers back to Lord Brahma and blessed him by granting him a shrine at this temple.

There are very few temples and shrines dedicated to Lord Brahma and this is one of the revered ones. Devotees believe that as this was the place where Lord Brahma’s destiny was re-written, offering prayers here will change the course of their own destiny, leading them to a better life.

Nataraja Temple Chidambaram

In South India most of the temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva and among all these Shiva temples, the Shiva temple of Chidambaram has earned the worldwide fame. Situated around 250 Km south of Chennai. Shiva Temple of Chidambaram is one of the most marvelous temple complex in South India. This temple is spread over an area of approx 18 hectare and is often referred to as the heart of city. The Nataraja temple complex is in rectangular shape and is divided into five courtyards, four of which can be visited by the public while the fifth one is only for priests and other visitor are not allowed here. Nataraja Temple has nine gateway towers and five halls. There are five major and several small shrines in this temple complex and a number of water tanks are also there in Nataraja temple. It is also one of the most ancient temples of Tamil Nadu. Tourists from all around the world come to visit Nataraja Temple for its religious and architectural importance.

Nataraja temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Nataraja, which means the cosmic dancer, is another name of Lord Shiva which is the main deity in this temple. Thanjavur was the Capital city of the Cholas, Nayaks and the Mahrattas. Thanjavur was at height of its splendor during the great Rajaraja Cholan. Apart from this construction, the dhyana mandapam which is built for the purpose of meditating is one reason of the serene environment found near the temple.

On the back wall are three bas-reliefs, two of Jain Tirthankaras (as indicated by the triple umbrellas (chhatris) above them and the third relief depicts an acharya (teacher).
