Since you’re eating more food and more frequently, chances are that this is slowing down the affects that alcohol has on your body.

2. Increased Hydration

If you’re on a Caribbean cruise or cruising through tropical destinations, chances are you’re staying more hydrated than normal. Typically, when it’s hot outside, we naturally drink more water to stay hydrated.

You may even be making an extra effort to increase your water intake.

12 Things You Didn’t Know about Drinks & Drinking on a Cruise

Other than maybe working on a tan, there’s not much that is more popular than having a drink or three while on a cruise. Bars are everywhere around the ship, and alcohol is big business.

But while you might think that there isn’t much that can trip you up about having a drink on vacation, there are a number of things that you may not know.

From things that can save you serious money on your bar tab to rules around the fine print on those drink packages, here are our best secrets, tips, and things to know about cruises and your favorite alcoholic beverages.

Expect to Pay ‘Stadium’ Prices for Drinks

If you want to have a beer or a cocktail on your cruise, then be ready to open your wallet. Of course, prices for different drinks will vary. In general, however, we like to say that the cost of drinks are stadium prices. So if you head to a ballgame, then have an idea of what drinks cost on a cruise.

For beers, expect to pay around $7-9 each. Cocktails tend to run about $11-14 each. Gratuity — usually at 18% for most lines — is then tacked on as well (more on this in a moment).

In other words, it’s not cheap. And unlike going to a stadium where you are only there for a few hours, on a cruise ship you are there for days at a time. 

Of course, there are drink packages that can help you budget during your cruise, but they can also run up to a healthy bill. In other words, if you want to drink on the ship, then expect to spend some cash.

Discounts for Drink Packages Bought Early

If you plan to drink a good amount and want to save money, then check out the drink packages. You pay one set price for each day and then get to drink what you want without worrying about a bill for each beverage.

If you do want the drink package, then you can save some money by booking it early. Cruise lines will offer early booking discounts when you book ahead. For instance, Carnival offers $5 per day off the package versus buying onboard. Royal Caribbean charges different prices for the drink package for different cruises, but often the discount for booking ahead can be 20% or more.

So one of the best money-saving tips is to snag that drink package before you get on the ship.

Gratuity Is a Fact of Life

If you ordered a drink at a bar on land, you might toss a buck or two in the tip jar. On a cruise, it’s much more formal.

Whether you order one drink or ten, you’ll have a gratuity tacked on to the menu price. This charge is normally 15-20%, depending on the cruise line. For instance, NCL charges 20%. Carnival and Royal Caribbean charge 18%.

So if you walk up to the bar and order a $12 drink, you’re actually going to be more than $14 when all is said and done. While the gratuity is automatic, you’ll also see a line for additional gratuity. This is optional and you don’t have to pay more.

Bars Start Early and Stay Open Late

On land, bars might not open until the afternoon or early evening. On a cruise ship? It’s a little different. It’s not unusual for some bars to open early in the morning, sometimes as early as 9 a.m.

It certainly won’t be all the bars, but you should be able to find a drink to start your day.

As for the evening, bars sometimes don’t even list closing hours — they just say they are open until “late.” After all, there are no laws regarding bar hours when you’re at sea. To be sure, some bars will definitely be closed late at night. So if you have a favorite spot, it might not be serving. But there will be some spot where you can get a drink.

You Can Bring Your Own… With Stipulations

If you want to save some money — or you have a favorite brand then you can usually bring on your own wine or champagne. Note that we didn’t say beer or liquor.

Most cruise lines allow you to bring on a bottle or wine/champagne per person for you to enjoy in the cabin. It may not be a lot, but given the prices onboard, it will save you a decent amount. It’s also nice if you have a favorite brand you want to take.

Unfortunately, the allowance is limited to only wine/champagne. The cruise lines don’t allow you to bring on beer or liquor.

The Low-Down on Sneaking Alcohol

Of course, given the cost and restrictions on alcohol, you might be wondering about sneaking it on with you when you board.

In that case, you should know that cruise lines check your luggage for alcohol when you board. That includes X-raying your bags and often hand-checking any liquids you bring on. For instance, you’ll likely see a table with security checking non-alcoholic drinks being brought on. And cruise lines have seen it all — mouthwash bottles, fake sunscreen tubes, you name it.

If you’re caught, expect your alcohol to be confiscated and not returned . Still, we have traveled with people that have used collapsible flasks hidden in clothing and snuck on alcohol, so it is possible if you’re the sort that doesn’t mind taking the risk.

Duty-Free Shopping Doesn’t Mean You Can Drink It On the Ship

Whenever you walk around the ship, you’ll likely pass by the duty-free shop. Every ship has one. Here, you’ll find full bottles of alcohol sold at reasonable prices — even less expensive than what you normally see on land since they don’t have taxes applied.

It’s tempting to think about buying one of these and then drinking for cheap on the ship. But duty-free purchases are actually held until the end of the cruise.

The night before you depart, they are then delivered to your cabin. So technically you could open them up for the last night and go wild, but if you think that you can buy it early in the cruise and then enjoy the liquor, that’s not the case.

Loyalty Can Get You Cheaper Drinks

Cruise line loyalty programs — some people are obsessed with their loyalty status while other don’t even think twice. But when it comes to drinks, you should know that status can save you money.

If you aren’t familiar, the more nights you sail a particular cruise line, the higher loyalty status you earn. And with higher status comes more perks. These can range from everything from priority boarding to free cruises.

But the perks also often include either free or discounted drinks. For example, Royal Caribbean gives drink vouchers to its Diamond level members and above. And even lower-tier members can get 50% coupons off wine and beer.

Drinking in Port Is Cheaper

We’ve established that drinking on the ship can get expensive. And given how much time you spend on the ship during your cruise, there’s not much you can do to escape the prices. But when you are in port, you can take advantage to pay much less.

Ports of call cater to cruise passengers, and in port — especially in the Caribbean — you’ll often find bars offering drink specials to get people in the door. So while you might pay $7-9 for a beer on the ship, they can be $3-4 when in port.

If you don’t have a drink package, then taking advantage of it can save you serious money if you plan to have more than a drink or two.

Feel Free to Order “Off-Menu”

When you visit different bars around the ship, you’ll notice that they often have different atmospheres and vibes. So there might be a sports bar and a pool bar, a wine bar, and more. These different bars will usually have different menus serving up different drinks. So you might have a drink you see on one bar menu that’s not featured on another.

It’s fun to try the different drinks at different bars. But if you have a favorite drink that you want, then you should know that the menu is really more of a suggestion. You can definitely order off menu at the bars instead of having to go across the ship to get the drink you saw at one particular spot. If it’s a specialty drink, the bar might not be able to make it. Most drinks, however, are no problem.

Ports Mean Funny Rules Around Drinks

You likely know that the rules around alcohol can be pretty strange on land. Well, those rules extend to cruise ships when they are in a state’s or country’s waters. It can lead to some strange hoops that cruise lines and passengers have to jump through.

For instance, when you first get on the ship at a port, then you are going to be taxed the local rate on alcoholic beverages that you drink. So it’s actually more expensive to drink. And sometimes there are other rules, like in Texas, Carnival doesn’t offer the use of the drink packages until the start of the second day due to state laws. And in Canada there are restrictions that allow only one bar per deck to be open.

If you are out in the middle of the ocean, then you don’t have to worry about the restrictions. But in port, sometimes the rules and regulations can get a little strange.

Free Drink Package? It Might Not Be Completely Free

Drink packages are pretty popular on a cruise. In fact, they are such a big draw that some cruise lines offer them up as a deal sweetener to get you to book. But you need to know the fine print of that deal before you buy.

Norwegian Cruise Line is the biggest example. They offer Free at Sea , which adds in things like wi-fi and the drink package to your booking. But while they say the drink package is free, you do have to pay the gratuity charge you would otherwise pay if you bought the package. It’s about $20 per day, per person.

So on a weeklong cruise, that free drink package comes out to about $140 per person. That’s not bad, but it’s definitely not what many people would consider “free.”

Drinking alcohol is one of the most popular pastimes on a  cruise vacation.    It’s no wonder then that with the relatively high price of individual drinks and drinks packages and alcohol playing such a large part in a cruise experience, guests talk about and attempt to sneak alcohol on board.

Most ocean sailing cruise ships strictly limit the amount of alcohol you can bring on the cruise.

Usually, it is only wine you can take on a cruise , typically one to two bottles.  Beers and liquors are often prohibited.

Before you decide whether to get around the rules, it might be worth checking out our drinks packages advice and tips, and ways to maximize value and even benefit from hacks such as those highlighted in our How to cheat royal Caribbean drinks package.

Either way, no doubt sneaking on your favorite alcohol and liquors, in particular, could potentially save you hundreds of dollars.

Some people think it’s the only way they can drink on a cruise at 18 to 20, although underage drinking should be discouraged. Whereas others are convinced alcoholic cruise drinks are watered down , so try to take their own.

Finally, it’s worth considering what happens if you get caught sneaking alcohol on a cruise , so you know what you are risking.

Also, its worth checking beforehand if you can bring alcohol on a cruise in the first place for your cruise line of choice. It might be more than you think, or may allow you to use some of the methods below to sneak liquor on instead of wine.

How to Sneak Alcohol on a Cruise Ship

Most of these items are ideal for sneaking alcohol onto a cruise ship.

However, some can be extra useful for having once you are on the ship when it comes to sneaking the use of the alcohol into other drinks without being seen.

This is where small discreet flasks can come in handy.

1. Rum Runners

Rum runners are plastic bags like flasks in which you can pour alcohol and then pack it in your luggage to disguise its contents. 

To make your rum runners less detectable, pack them, so they don’t stand out clearly on the X-rays.  Put the funnel cap end mixed in near other small toiletries, so it doesn’t stand out as a cap to a liquid-filled bag.

If you have any other legit liquid containers, put them layered over the rum runners, so they show on the scan over the rum runners.  If the luggage gets called to be opened, there’s a chance that when they open it and see legit liquid containers, they’ll let it through rather than rummage through all your packed luggage.

If you have more than one item of luggage, split the rum runners into different bags, so if one gets called out for a manual check, the other bags might get through.

If security does a spot check and sees a rum runner, they will know what it is and confiscate it.

Rum Runners on Person

Another way I’ve heard people use rum runners to sneak alcohol on a cruise is to use the smaller bags on their person.  For example, tucked in their cargo pants.

Rum runners are usually sold in multi-packs, which you can find on Amazon here.  Double check you get one with a funnel, so you don’t risk spilling any of your precious liquor.

They are undoubtedly one of the cheapest options for sneaking alcohol onboard .

2. Fake Shampoo Bottles (Disguised Flask)

Fake shampoo bottles are a great way to smuggle some alcohol onboard.  Many are specifically made with sneaking alcohol on cruise ships in mind.

You can purchase whole fake shampoo and conditioner sets, so in theory, you could take enough liquors to make a range of your own cocktails in your stateroom.

The bottles look realistic from the outside.  Make sure you choose one with foam security seals that stop leaks but, more importantly, make the bottles look sealed, so if they are opened by cruise staff, there is no smell of alcohol.

Don’t bother trying to reuse old shampoo bottles.   They are notoriously difficult to clean. You don’t want to contaminate your alcohol with any remnants you inadvertently missed after going through all the trouble of smuggling your favorite liquor onboard.

The other issue with reusing old bottles is they are much more likely to leak.

3. Fake Suncream (Sneak Flask)

Fake suncream flasks are another good option because they naturally contain liquid, so they won’t look suspicious on a scan.

Also, it looks natural in a set if you’re taking different strengths sun creams but really taking different liquors.

The other advantage is they look like natural containers to have around while sunning yourself by the pool, so when you get the opportunity, you can add some alcohol to your soft drinks without suspicion.

They should come with funnels for easy alcohol pouring when filling and also factory seals to keep them watertight and make them look brand new opened.

4. Tampon Flask

Tampon flasks are plastic test tubes that you can fill with alcohol and disguise as a tampon.   Security won’t give them a close inspection if they are discovered in your luggage.

They are more commonly used for festivals and concert-type events rather than cruises.

While they can be used to sneak alcohol onboard, they are of limited use due to their small size.

However, some women carry them around in their bags while in public areas of the ship and use them to add alcohol to soft drinks.

If you use them, make sure you pack them in a water-tight plastic bag to avoid any problems with leakage.

5. Liquor In Wine Bottle Cruise Hack

Most cruise lines allow guests to bring wine on a cruise , typically just one bottle, but sometimes more.

This presents an opportunity to replace the wine with your favorite liquor.   

However, if you choose this method, you have to do it properly and make it look like the wine bottle has never been opened.

Depending on the cruise you are going on, an umbrella flask could be an option for sneaking alcohol use.  

They can be used both for smuggling alcohol onboard and on ships or excursions.  

Just carry the BoozeBrella in your bags as if you are ready for all weather.  Even though it’s purely a flask and not an umbrella anyone can use.

7. Binocular Flask

Binoculars are a cruise essential for many on a sightseeing cruise holiday, so what better secret alcohol container than a binocular flask ?

Not being bottle shaped its more likely to go unnoticed through the Xrays.

Another good thing is that each side is a separate flask so if you wanted you can put different liquors in each side, approximately 8 oz each side.

8. Booze Bra / Bra Flask 

A booze bra or, as otherwise known, Liquor bra or wine rack bra.

This is a more extreme way to smuggle alcohol on a cruise, but for some, it’s an option to hide up to 25 oz of alcohol on your person.

It’s one of those methods that sound good but maybe isn’t as good when put into practice.   It might not be a good fit or comfortable for some.  The tube needs to be hidden at all times.  There’s also the possibility it could leak.

However, 25 oz is 25 oz for some, so worth the effort.

9. Mouthwash Bottles

Mouthwash bottles have been a popular way of sneaking alcohol on cruises.  Thoroughly rinse an old Listerine bottle and fill with your favorite clear liquors like vodka and gins. Then, color them with food coloring to match ordinary mouthwashes, typically pinks, blues, and greens.

Or these days, you can buy colored variations of gin and vodka, so you might not even need to add the coloring.

The disadvantage of this method is the cruise lines know it’s an old trick.  Some even mention it in their terms of what they look out for in their alcohol policies, so if they spot it you can expect them to flag it up to be checked.

The temptation is also to buy the larger bottles of mouthwash, which most people wouldn’t normally take on a short vacation.

10. Hairbrush Flask

The hairbrush flask is a good secret alcohol container for carrying around with you.  Holding 6oz of liquor, you can keep it close by at all times in a bag and use it to discreetly top up soft drinks.

The bonus with this alcohol flask is that you can use it for its original intended function as well, as brushing your hair.  Some also double up with a mirror on the back.

11 Wine Backpack & Beach Bags

This Wine backpack or Wine beach bag is ideal for traveling with a large amount of hidden alcohol.  It can hold up to 1.5 liters, so 2 bottles of wine.

You pour your wine or liquor into a pouch hidden within a compartment in the bag.

You can also use it as a backpack in its own right as well.

It could be used to sneak alcohol through security, but more likely used to have it on you around the ship or on excursions, so you have your alcohol discreetly accessible and close by.

Foolproof Way To Sneak Alcohol On A Cruise

The most foolproof way of sneaking alcohol on a cruise would be using factory-sealed shampoo flasks.    These are containers you naturally fill with liquid to avoid suspicion.

The factory seal hides any smell of alcohol should they be handled in an inspection.

This works for all cruises, even those that don’t allow any drinks onboard, such as MSC and Costa Cruises which don’t allow non-alcoholic onboard, and only water if it is for medical purposes. This saves the cruise lines time from having to check bottles to see if they sneakily contain alcohol. Plus they make more money from purchases on the ships.

However, guests will still try sneaking alcohol on MSC and Costa Cruises using these methods.

A woman uses Walmart’ s Equate mouthwash as a hack to getting alcohol on her cruise ship. But this tactic—and her decision to reveal it on TikTok —left viewers torn.

TikTok user Bre (@breraven) posted a video recently from the desk of a cruise ship. In her hand is a bottle of Equate Fresh Breath Oral Rinse, which she holds up so you can see the bottle in the foreground and ocean in the background. Saxophonist Jonny Diggens plays in the background as she pours the liquid into the bottle cap.

In the text overlay, Bre writes, “You’re on a cruise. You finally got your bags delivered to your room. Your ‘mouthwash’ is still in there. You can finally begin your trip. Life’s good.”

Cruise packages are notoriously expensive and in some cases can be accompanied by some fine print . So it’s therefore unsurprising that numerous TikTokers have gone viral for posting hacks designed to help travelers sneak alcohol on board in their luggage. Like a couple who shared that they used water bottles to sneak liquor onto a Royal Carribean cruise.

Should you sneak alcohol aboard a cruise in mouthwash bottles?

Not everybody is able to get away with it, however. Last summer, a woman had her bag confiscated by cruise ship security after trying to board with a bottle of alcohol inside. Some people blamed TikTok for increased security checks on cruises. A cruise expert says you should never bring alcohol aboard, and instead check the rules about bringing a bottle of wine or champagne.

Bre’s video has amassed 1.1 million views as of Saturday. In the comments, users remain torn between admiring the hack and wanting Bre to keep the secret to herself so others can potentially use it. 

One user wrote, “& it comes with its own shot glass.”

A second user wrote, “Minty liquor. Yum lol. I did this once.. thought I cleaned it out so good. I was wrong now I know get the plain mouthwash.”

A third user wrote, “Works every time! But please delete it before they start checking.”

I sailed on Carnival's new cruise ship. See all of its amenities — and why some are better than its pricier competitors

Carnival's new Firenze cruise ship is filled with upcharged options. But if you look past them, you'll be pleasantly surprised by their complimentary activities.

The company's second Italy-themed ship came highly anticipated. In early April, Firenze's naming ceremony "triggered a step up in bookings," Josh Weinstein, the president and CEO of Carnival Cruise Line's parent company, Carnival Corp, told analysts in late June.

Two weeks after the ceremony, Carnival Firenze set sail on its maiden voyage from its homeport in Long Beach, California, marking the 27th vessel to join the cruise line's fleet.

This boost in bookings might not come as a surprise after seeing its prices.

New cruise ships generally command an inflated fare. But it seems the new 5,245-guest Firenze ignored this tradition, with 2024 fares currently starting at almost $360 per person for a four-night cruise.

Not too bad , given all of its amenities.

Firenze is more than just another towel animal-toting Carnival cruise.

In 2022, Carnival acquired Firenze and its sister ship from Costa Cruises. Firenze then underwent a two-month refresh to be outfitted with the "Carnival Fun Italian Style" theme.

If you're an American who loves campy European-themed venues — think a cheaper version of the Venetian in Las Vegas — Firenze could feel like an Italian getaway. The theme is hard to miss, from the white statues to the giant photos of Florence, Italy.

I went on Firenze's four-night cruise about two weeks after its maiden voyage.

I previously wrote a less-than-glowing review of Carnival Firenze , although I was impressed with the vessel's complimentary activities, a rarity on many popular cruises.

Norwegian's newer ships, for example, have $10 mini-golf courses and VR arcades that cost $29 for an hour of play. Similarly, Royal Caribbean's new ultra-giant, ultra-popular Icon of the Seas has a $49-per-person ropes course that can be completed in less than a minute.

Carnival Firenze also has a mini-golf and ropes course — but they're both free, albeit not as exciting or modern as the cruise line's competitors.

Unfortunately, the arcade isn't free. But you'd be hard-pressed to find a complimentary one anywhere.

Like Icon of the Seas, brave guests must be harnessed in before walking Firenze's ropes course.

But unlike Royal Caribbean's adrenaline-pumping walkway, Firenze's course takes several minutes to complete. And while it's less showy and dramatic than Icon's, it is free to go on as many times as you'd like — and for that, a better deal.

Want to keep the adrenaline going? Carnival's new ship has waterslides near the children's water playground.

Nearby, there's also cornhole, a giant chess set, and an outdoor sports court for an afternoon of shooting hoops. If you're lucky, you can also claim one of the open-air foosball tables.

If not, there's an indoor foosball table near the ping pong table and a collection of board games and books.

Speaking of indoor-outdoor options, Firenze has two pools, one outside and another under a glass roof.

The latter is also home to the makeshift nighttime movie theater, so long as viewers are OK with paying $4 for popcorn and the background sound of screaming children at the pool.

If you want to escape the kids, Firenze has the obligatory cruise ship spa, casino, and boutiques.

Or go to the adult-only outdoor lounge outfitted with rows of lounge seats, two hot tubs, and, most importantly, no children in sight. It's also where you'll also find the ship's salad bar — one of Firenze's 15 dining options.

Of the 16 restaurants, nine venues are complimentary

But there are some caveats.

Some included options, like the pizza kiosk and buffet, have up-charged items. Others, like the aforementioned salad bar and grill stand, remained frustratingly closed until the last day of my cruise.

But if you don't consider these stipulations, Firenze's free-to-upcharged restaurant ratio isn't abnormal. About half of competitor Icon of the Seas' 21 dining venues also cost extra.

Carnival Firenze's specialty options include an empanada stand and classics like sushi, teppanyaki, and Italian restaurants.

Travelers ready to splurge on food could pay as little as $1.50 for an empanada or almost $50 for a steakhouse dinner.

Dining at the free buffet but eyeing the up-charged chicken wings? They'll be $5 for six pieces. Having breakfast at the free main dining room? A fresh juice will be $5.

Want a dinner lobster roll from the seafood shack? It'll be another $18.

During the day, the seafood shack serves as a complimentary chicken stand, joining eight other free options.

Cruisers can live out their "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" dreams at the Guy Fieri-branded burger counter, where heavy accouterments like fried mozzarella slabs and onion rings are commonplace.

Or, head up a deck to Il Mercato for grab-and-go Italian sandwiches.

Firenze has two main dining rooms for a more formal sit-down dinner. Just note that the dinner buffet serves the same menu as these restaurants. And while the food is fine, it's not great — and I did find a piece of plastic hidden in my pasta.

As with any mass-market cruise ship, alcohol isn't free.

Cocktails are about $13, while beers and seltzers are about $9. But if you can't cruise without booze (it is Carnival, after all), the new ship has plenty of venues for your needs.

Bars like Piano Bar 88 and Tuscan Lounge have live music.

Amari offers options that fit the ship's Italian theme, like aperitifs, digestives, and Negroni sbagliatos ("stunnin'!").

Meanwhile, Heroes Tribute Bar and Lounge is great for guests who want to sip a beer, watch sports, and surround themselves in American military garb.

If you enjoy doing karaoke, you'll love karaoke night at the stylish and contemporary Moda Bar and Lounge.

And if you crave Aperol spritzes the moment the sun comes out, you could find yourself frequently visiting the bubbly-forward, new-to-brand Frizzante.

While not technically a bar, the coffee shop also sells boozy milkshakes and floats for almost $12.

But then again, everything at JavaBlue Cafe has a price tag, from the $4.50 latte to the icy $7.25 frappe. And if you want a sweet treat with your pick-me-up, it'll be $4 for a doughnut or cupcake.

(If you don't want to pay for caffeine, the buffet has free black coffee, Bigelow's green tea, and Lipton tea.)

It wouldn't be a cruise without live entertainment, either.

The atrium hosts musicians and singers dressed in Venice Carnival — or "Eyes Wide Shut" — style masks, while the smaller Limelight Lounge is the go-to for stand-up comedy. There's also an interactive "Deal or No Deal" game show, although participation costs $25.

But if we're talking about traditional theater shows, my four-night cruise included the cheesy "Dear Future Husband" song-and-dance production and the interactive "What's Age Got To Do With It?" game show.

If laughter from the crowd indicates success, the game show — which sources participants from the crowd — was a hit.

A show where half the players are children is sure to be entertaining.

Is the entertainment better on Norwegian and Royal Caribbean’s newest ships? Yes.

Does Carnival Firenze have as many pools as its competitors' latest vessels? No.

But is Firenze's mini-golf and ropes course free? Yes.

Plus, with four-night voyages starting at almost $90 a night, Firenze's 2024 itineraries are both shorter and cheaper than several other new cruise ships on the market. (Norwegian Viva's cheapest 2024 itinerary is more than $1,520 per person for an 11-day sailing, while Icon of the Seas starts at almost $1,770 per person for eight days.)

So, if you can resist the enticing upcharges, Carnival's new Firenze could be a great pick for families looking for a cheap and fun vacation at sea .

Drinks onboard - quality or watered down

We were on the valor 3/2011. The drinks were really poor quality and watered down. We're going on the freedom 2/2012. Any chance the drinks will be better? Any recent cruisers and their opinions?

We were on the Med cruise of The Magic in October and the drinks were very very strong. The secret is to make friends with the bartender on the first day and then you will have strong drinks the rest of the cruise.

It really depends on the bartender.

I've never had watered down drinks onboard, they've always been pretty strong.

Did you try drinks from all the different bars on the Valor? They were all the same? Usually you can find 1 bar/bartender who makes the strong ones.

Often it depends on how you get your drinks at home. If you pour them yourself or go to a local spot on a regular basis, drinks on the ships might not be as strong.

I've never had an issue, then again I drink Hennessy straight up, so its impossible or them to screw that up...lol

"Watered down" implies that Carnival adds water to the bottles like many AI's are accused of doing. I'm sure they don't do that. Local bars at home often free pour a double for customers as a courtesy - keeps people coming back. Carnival is more likely to measure an exact single like a typical corporate restaurant does. Not watered down per se...just weaker than the local bars back home.

I get a bottle from bon voyage. How strong is up to me? Wine is never watered down. :D

I've had bartenders re-make the drink if I mentioned it's too watery. All you have to ask.

I've found it varies widely from ship to ship. I think it may depend on management on each ship at a particular time and how strict they are with pours. I've only been on one ship where I wondered if they were actually watering down the bottles. Taste was off on everything and I'm a complete lightweight who gets pretty tipsy off one martini. I suspected something was off when I could have two in a row and never felt a thing.

Other ships they are quite strong. A couple of free rum punches at the farewell party on the Valor last year nearly put us all under the table. I was expecting the usual weak freebie stuff.

I don't think they are watered down, I just think they pour 1 ounce shots.

One of the reasons I stopped ordering JW Black on the rocks and pretty much stopped ordering drinks, period.

Yes, over-tipping and/or making friends with the bar tender helps those shots get bigger, but I think the drink prices are high to begin with.

It really does depend on the bartender in my experience. In the MDR very watered down, had no detectable alcohol.

At the Fun Farewell party people were getting Long Island ice teas...very strong!

Watered down is not the same thing as weak. Weak I believe. Watered down is very very unlikely.

We've had pretty good luck on our cruises. We usually prefer wine and beer, so you know exactly what you're getting. We have noticed that when we order an Appletini, Jack and Coke, or Bloody Marys at the little bar along the promenade deck (inside) we get strong drinks. Maybe it's because we are chatty with the bartenders and they aren't busy. Who knows. However, those are expensive drinks, so we don't order many of them!

Great answers and tips for sure. I have not purchased a drink on board either on my past 2 cruises. Prices vary around the country for drinks, by me I know of only one place that would/will charge 4-5 for a beer. Many locals don't go, 2 or 3 bucks is more sensible here, so paying more than 5 or more for a beer won't happen for me on board. I also get a BV Bottle ( rum- I drink it straight up), this bottle as well as my wine I can carry on works for me. For my beloved beer...that's what ports are for :)

Many ports one can get off the beaten path and fine beer for 1-3 a bottle. Of course one can also hit breweries on excursions, in two weeks I cruise again and have Caybrew in Grand Cayman scheduled and Belikin in Belize scheduled for tours...not counting a micro-brewery in Tampa tha day before we ship out.

One person I get familiar with on the first night is the cocktail waiter in our section of the MDR and make sure he/she knows my preference. After that, they are always at our table within minutes of us being seated every evening with my usual pre-dinner cocktail, very generously poured. And of course I take good care of that person on the last night with a likewise generous tip. ;)

Kroozers is also probably correct: I seriously doubt the liquor bottles are being cut with water but rather the bartender is being precise and only pouring 1 ounce and nothing extra.

to the OP the last time I was on the Valor the bartender @ one of the bars would actually put a floater on my DOD's

The only weak drinks I have had on Carnival is during the past guest party. When I order from a bar "including the drink of the day" they are usually pretty strong. I have had some DoD's that were not as potent but I can feel it in my toes before the next one is ordered I assure you.

I often order a double jack & coke which comes in a tall glass and is very strong - almost undrinkable but I always manage.:p They are pricey at $12 but very good and strong. I usually only need 2 of those and I'm good for the whole night.

I've never found the drinks on any Carnival cruise to be "watered down." They've always been to my taste and certainly gave me the "buzz" I expected. Then again, I'm not sure of your idea of "poor quality and watered down." Judging by most of the responses to your OP, I'd say your assertion might be a little on the subjective side.

Most of the drinks I have had on a Carnival ship are as strong as or stronger than what I get on land in the states. It could be a new bartender that thinks that you have to measure each drink instead of free pore them.

Not my experience at all - I've watched many times as 2 ozs. and sometimes more were poured into my glass, without my having to give anyone an extra tip, no matter which ship I was on.

I can assure you, I've NEVER had a watered down drink on any of my Carnival cruises. The daily specials are all good and the special drinks (Cruiser Classics) will flat out get you drunk quick. I almost had to send one Mai Tia back because it was TOO strong......almost ;)

Anti-tourist backlash in Europe causes cruise ships to change course

The European head of the world’s largest cruise trade body has warned that its members may need to avoid some of the world’s most famous destinations to protect passengers amid a backlash against overtourism . 

Several European cities have vented their frustrations over rising tourist numbers and its impact on the price of everything from food to accommodation and the local ecosystem. Tourism’s environmental footprint is a complaint usually levied at giant carbon-emitting cruise ships. 

In Barcelona, a popular setting-off point for cruise liners, locals have taken to squirting tourists with water pistols . Protestors in the Spanish Canary Islands started a hunger strike in April to protest overcrowding. 

Last October, cruise passengers were greeted by protesters dressed as polar bears and sea lions as they disembarked at the French port of Brittany, in a nod to the industry’s penchant for pollution. 

A study from the campaign group Transport & Environment found Europe’s luxury cruise ships emitted as much toxic sulphur as 1 billion cars. 

A rising tide

As protests have become increasingly hostile, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has suggested that it may have to divert ships to protect passengers from violence.

“There will be some consideration of adapting the itineraries if for some reason we feel that all passengers will not be well-treated,” Marie-Caroline Laurent, European director of the CLIA, told Reuters . 

Laurent didn’t specify which cities were liable to be axed from itineraries, but it’s easy to join the dots after a wave of protests across the continent in recent months. 

The mayor of Barcelona, Europe’s most popular port for cruise ships, said the city couldn’t take more passengers than the 3.5 million it accepted in 2023.

The CLIA defended its presence in Barcelona, saying only 4% of the city’s visitors were cruise passengers.

Venice, which banned cruise ships from the center in 2021, introduced a so-called “ tourist tax ” to deter or make extra money from day-trippers to the city this summer, months after moving to limit the size of groups that could congregate in the city.

Amsterdam, meanwhile, plans to nearly halve the number of cruises that can stop in its port every year by 2026 and ban them altogether by 2035.

And in Greece, locals have taken to using drones to police new rules on sun loungers in a bid to stop overcrowding on the country’s beaches.

Despite grumbling about a rising lack of hospitality, the global cruise industry is set to carry 10.7% more passengers in 2028 than in 2023, when 31.7 million tourists boarded the liners.

Drinking on a plane has a unique effect on your body

Love an in-flight nightcap? Whether you’re trying to pass time or ease anxiety, a drink could make your in-flight experience even worse.

You’re settled into your long-haul, international flight. The cabin pressure has stabilized, the seat belt sign is off, and the bar cart is heading down the aisle. Finally time to unwind—and there’s nothing like a Bloody Mary or a glass of wine to help you doze off for a few hours, right? Perhaps you consider a drink-induced nap a necessity, to stave off jet lag or anxiety.

As relaxing as it might seem, that drink might be doing more harm than good. New research found that alcohol compounds the effects of high altitude on people’s bodies, putting an extra burden on the cardiovascular system, reducing blood oxygen levels, compounding dehydration, and impairing sleep quality. It can also make you even more anxious .

“Why not just avoid drinking it in a situation that is already stressful for the body?” says study author Eva-Maria Elmenhorst.

Still, questions remain about how exactly alcohol may interfere with the in-flight experience, especially sleep—and who’s at greatest risk of health impacts. Experts discuss the science behind this research and what passengers can do to avoid the worst effects.

The additive physiologic effects of alcohol and altitude  

Much like ascending a mountain, flying puts a strain on the body. With increased altitude comes decreased air pressure, which decreases the concentration of oxygen in the air—also known as hypobaric hypoxia —and results in reduced oxygen in our lungs and bloodstream (called hypoxemia).

Although airplanes are pressurized to minimize the impact, a plane at standard cruising altitude (30,000 to 40,000 feet) would still have a cabin pressure matching that of an altitude above sea level, around 8,000 feet, says Peter Hackett, a high altitude expert and emergency physician. For a healthy person, that amount of elevation gain may not be noticeable, especially because our bodies have natural adaptation mechanisms.

Get science-backed tips to nurture your mind and body

“Your heart rate’s higher, you breathe more—either take more breaths each minute and/or take deeper breaths,” says physician and University of Washington professor of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine Andrew Luks. These are just some of “a whole range of physiologic responses in the body, most of which are intended to help your body adjust to the low oxygen conditions and compensate for it.”

However, consuming alcohol may disrupt this response, Hackett says. Though the mechanisms are not fully understood, experts suspect that alcohol inhibits ventilation and, thus, oxygen intake. “[Alcohol] is what we call a respiratory depressant,” Hackett says. While a sober body will respond to high altitude by increasing breathing rates, he says, “alcohol blunts that response.”

Indeed, the researchers found that participants who consumed alcohol before sleeping at simulated high altitude clocked elevated heart rates (15 bpm higher than non-drinking participants) and decreased blood oxygen levels (three percent lower blood oxygen concentration than sober group). Both of these effects strain the cardiovascular system.

Sleep quality and duration already suffer at high altitude , even for healthy and sober folks, according to Luks. “People spend much less time in the deeper stages of sleep and in REM sleep,” he says. Lower oxygen levels cause people to wake up more frequently and experience periods of breathing punctuated by periods of apnea, a phenomenon called periodic breathing .  

Of course, all the noise, turbulence, cramped seats, and frequent interruptions of a flight also contribute to a less than ideal sleeping environment. “There are any number of other things that are equally contributing to the problem,” Luks says.  

Although a glass of wine might seem like a good relaxant, alcohol actually has an adverse effect on sleep quality, says Mariann Piano, a substance abuse expert and professor of nursing at Vanderbilt University. Even at sea level, alcohol has been shown to elevate heart rates , which can interfere with REM sleep and disrupt cardiovascular relaxation .

“When you drink a lot of alcohol, it does have a depressant effect, and you feel sleepy,” she explains. “But as you’re sleeping, your blood alcohol level is declining and, at certain blood alcohol levels, it actually becomes more of a stimulant and it wakes you up.”

The circulation of dry, cool air on flights has a dehydrating effect that can be exacerbated by alcohol. Alcohol inhibits antidiuretic hormones, which cause people to urinate more frequently, removing water from the body—and further interrupting sleep. Add the disruptive effects of altitude on breathing and rest, and you have a recipe for a fairly restless flight.

Alcohol and altitude affect some more than others

The mix of alcohol and altitude caused healthy participants in Elmenhorst’s study a degree of cardiac stress that Hackett says is comparable to “taking a walk.” The drop in oxygen levels, on the other hand, could cause headaches or dizziness, though he says it’s likely negligible for people in good health.

Luks agrees, noting that young, healthy people—including all of the participants in the study—“can generally tolerate fair degrees of hypoxemia.” While reduced oxygen levels over a prolonged period can cause tissue damage , in most cases, such as on flights, even the compounded effects of alcohol and altitude are mild, short-term, and will recede shortly after returning to sea level.

The implications may be more serious among people who are older or suffering from preexisting conditions, like heart or lung diseases, says Piano. Theoretically, she says, an increase in heart rate or a drop in oxygen saturation levels could cause an “acute physiologic consequence,” such as heart failure .  

Practical tips for those who like to partake

If that casual inflight drink isn’t something you’re quick to forgo, experts offer some tips to minimize sleep and health impacts.

Piano recommends consuming no more than one alcoholic beverage over the course of a flight. Best to have that glass of wine or cocktail with food and supplement with extra water, she adds. And, as on land, the effects of alcohol are stronger on an empty stomach.  

Ultimately, when looking at the effects of alcohol, it “always comes down to a question of how much,” Luks says. “Go ahead and have a beer or a glass of wine, but don’t overdo it.”
