The world is pretty big place, which is why any kind of list that narrows down the best places to visit is a welcome read.

As one of the most prestigious travel lists in the world – the annual New York Times ‘52 Best Places to Travel’ countdown is always packed full of locations you may never have dreamt of – or others that have slipped and stayed on your bucket list.

This year, the publication selected locations that highlight places around the globe where travellers can be part of the solution.

“Our annual list of destinations to visit this year looks at spots where visitors can be part of the solution to problems like overtourism and climate change,” wrote The New York Times.

So from Canada to the Caribbean, where in the world should we be heading in 2022?

Start brushing up on your Italian, because at the top of the list is the seaside town south of Venice known as Chioggia.

Canal Vena bordered by historic buildings in the old town of Chioggia, a coastal town situated on a small island at the southern entrance to the Lagoon of Venice.

“Built on a cluster of islands in the Venetian lagoon, with centuries-old buildings rising from the canals in all their decadent glory, Chioggia is called “piccola Venezia,” or little Venice,”: the NYP wrote.

“Venice is so worried about being overwhelmed once again after the pandemic that it is planning to resort to surveillance cameras and cellphone data to control the crowds; visiting other culturally rich places like Chioggia can help relieve the pressure.

“During a time of increased awareness of overtourism, this miniature Venice is a delightful alternative for travellers looking for a lesser-known destination.”

Queens, New York, USA view with the Queensboro Bridge towards Manhattan at dusk.

Rounding out the top three, Queens scored bronze position for the city’s delectable assortment of “home cooking” – so make sure you visit with a loose belt.

“There’s probably nowhere else in the world where you can sample the home cooking of more than 150 different countries within such a compact space,” says the restaurant critic Robert Sietsema for the publication.

“The Queens restaurant industry was slammed by Covid-19, but now it’s recovering because we’re a borough of family-centred communities where the restaurants take care of their own,” Jonathan Forgash added, a chef and borough resident who founded Queens Together, a non-profit, in March 2020.

Summerland Beach has been named by the New York Times as one of the top 50 places in the world to visit in 2022.

A little closer to home, two Aussie destinations crept into the top 52 – with the Summerland Peninsula on Phillip Island coming in at 24 and the Daintree Rainforest rounding out the list in the 52nd position.

For Phillip Island, the obvious drawer card is the cluster of tiny penguins that emerge from the surf, waddling up toward nests that dot the beach.

Dubbed as the penguin parade, the cute moment has gained popularity since the 1920s with spectators keen to see the world’s smallest penguin breed. Currently, the penguin population now sits at around 35,000 breeding-aged birds, up from 12,000 in the 1980s.

It’s the Kmart item that’s received hundreds of five-star reviews and plenty of praise on social media. And the best bit, it’ll set you back just $32.

It’s dubbed the happiest place on earth — made all the more cheerful after a surprise visit from one of the world’s hottest A-listers.

From sake tasting in rowboats and traditional bonfire night fishing to surreal artist installation landscapes and ancient samurai sword making, these are Japan’s top 5 secret experiences.

New York Times 52 Places to Go in 2021

I love reading the annual travel lists compiled by various travel websites and newspapers on top travel destinations for the year.  While I don’t particularly care if a destination I travel to is considered a must see, I love reading these lists for inspiration on where to travel to and discovering places I might not have considered.

The New York Times list is one of my favorites. This year instead of their usual New York Times 52 Places to Go list they asked readers to tell them about the spots that have delighted, inspired and comforted them in a dark year and they have titled it “52 Places to Love in 2021.”

Update: Here is the newest list for 2024 .

Here are their picks for places to love in 2021:

1. South Wales, Wales 2. Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands 3. Kaliya Dhrow, India 4. Isfahan, Iran 5. The Llanos, Colombia 6. Siwa Oasis, Egypt 7. Montana’s ‘Golden Triangle’ 8. The Camino de Santiago, Spain 9. Malpaís, Costa Rica 10. Dakar, Senegal 11. London’s St. James the Less Church, England 12. The Marrakesh Medina, Morocco 13. Nanda Devi Mountain, India 14. Laugavegur Trail, Iceland 15. Wadi Rum, Jordan 16. Aruba 17. Kaohsiung, Taiwan 18. The Scottish Highlands, Scotland 19. Lake Michigan 20. Niansogoni, Burkina Faso 21. Asunción, Paraguay 22. South London Parks, England 23. Beirut, Lebanon 24. Siberia, Russia 25. Andros, Greece 26. Romania 27. East Haddam, Conn. 28. Yarra Ranges National Park, Australia 29. Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah 30. Huanchaco, Peru 31. Jimmy’s Beach, New South Wales, Australia 32. The University of Cambridge, England 33. Lahore, Pakistan 34. Svalbard, Norway 35. Alberta, Canada 36. Santa Rosa, Calif. 37. Haiti 38. Ladakh, India 39. Hokkaido, Japan 40. The Hudson River’s Tappan Zee, New York 41. Northern Arkansas 42. Tagaytay, Philippines 43. Turku, Finland 50. The Rawah Wilderness, Colorado 51. The Methow Valley, Washington 52. The World

This list is definitely more off the beaten path than previous lists. Some of these are already on our travel wish list especially Svalbard, Norway and Hokkaido in Japan.

Click here for the  complete New York Times list .

To see the past lists from recent years here are the New York Times 52 Places to Go lists from 2015 , 2016 , 2017 ,  2018 ,  2019 and 2020 .

I especially like number 52–The World. That sure makes it impossible for anyone to claim they left my favorite destination off the list.

The architecture of the city was among the reasons the New York Times says New Haven is one of the 52 global destination for 2023. A view from inside the Yale Art Gallery.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Fascinating company to be in: Tromsø, Norway , Martinique, Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in Arizona, the Namib Desert in Southern Africa and, New Haven.

The New York Times' annual 52 Places to Go list for 2023 is out, and New Haven is number 50 on the list.

“It’s wonderful to see New Haven recognized as a premier world destination to visit and experience the arts, culture, food, distinctive neighborhoods, and so much more," said New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker in response to a request for comment by Patch.

Find out what's happening in New Haven with free, real-time updates from Patch.

"Anyone who walks, bikes, or buses through the streets or along the shoreline of New Haven will quickly notice the ‘treasure trove’ of all there is to do and see and why we’re on the map with so many other extraordinary travel destinations from around the globe," Elicker said. "The description in The New York Times just scratches the surface of what New Haven has to offer, and I look forward to more visitors from across the country and tourists from around the world coming to enjoy the city and what we as residents get to experience every day."

The Times points to the city's architecture, the New Haven Preservation Trust's conservation work, and community-focused arts center, NXTHVN as among the reasons to visit.

The energy-neutral Hotel Marcel was also listed as a reason to visit.

As Hotel Marcel notes on its Facebook page, it is "powered solely by the sun."

"Hotel Marcel is designed to be the 1st hotel in the country to achieve Passive House and LEED Platinum certification," it reads. "It's a redux of the landmark Pirelli building designed by Marcel Breuer — famed modernist architect and our illustrious namesake."

And, new College Street Italian eatery Villa Lulu was mentioned as an eatery not to be missed.

It calls the city, "home to tinkerers and rebels, and a treasure trove of contemporary art and architecture.”

“We’re so proud to see New Haven included in The Times’ ’52 Places to Go’ list, and be in the company of such incredible destinations across the globe,” Market New Haven director Bruno Baggetta said in a news release. “We see this as a culmination of the hard work our city has put into community outreach and tourism. This honor only further energizes our efforts to cement New Haven as a hub for connection and innovation.”

New York Times travel editor Amy Virshup said the curated list was created by writers and photographers from across the world.

Elicker also noted that the city is "working hard" to support, recognize and celebrate New Haven's "traditionally under-represented local artists, cultural organizations, and civic institutions."

He said the city's "ongoing implementation of our first-ever Cultural Equity Plan is being created to "provide an even richer and fuller reflection of the extraordinary artistic and cultural contributions and heritage of our residents.”

Bannau Brycheiniog / Brecon Beacons

Two British spots are the world’s best to visit in 2024, according to the New York Times

It’s not all doom and gloom on our little island after all

Annie McNamee

It’s easy to feel down about the UK when you live here. Rubbish weather, even worse politicians, and a love for complaining mean that dissing the UK is every Briton’s favourite hobby.

But it isn’t all bad on this island! In fact, some parts are really quite excellent. So excellent, in fact, that they have been recognised by the New York Times (NYT) as some of the best ‘ places to go ’ in 2024. Manchester and Welsh national park  Bannau Brycheiniog are listed alongside the likes of Paris and Maui in the annual roundup.

Manchester , which the NYT praises for being ‘music-mad’, claims its place thanks to the opening of the new Co-op Live , which is set to be the largest indoor arena in the UK. The arena will welcome some industry behemoths after its opening in April, with names ranging from Olivia Rodrigo to Liam Gallagher. The project is even being backed by Harry Styles, who has an entire page on the venue’s website. If you were a Directioner in 2014, or indeed still are (no shame), Manchester is the place to be this year.

If you’d prefer a bit of peace and quiet, check out Bannau Brycheiniog  –  or Brecon Beacons, if your Welsh isn’t up to scratch. The national park was renamed last April to reflect its heritage, and it now stands as not only a testament to the natural beauty within the UK, but also to Welsh culture and history. Walk, cycle, or cave your way through the park and actually maintain that ‘get outside more’ New Year’s resolution you’ve already neglected.

Outside of the UK but still close to home, Waterford in the Republic of Ireland was awarded a spot thanks to its historic Viking Triangle and esoteric museums, including an entire museum dedicated to the tradition of funeral wakes. When in Ireland, I suppose.

You can check out the NYT’s list in full here .

Still haven’t decided where to go in 2024?

We've got you covered. Check out our guide to the best places to visit in the UK in 2024  and best new things to do across the country this year (which includes going to the sparkly new Co-op Live). If you want to adventure further, read up on the best things to do in the world this year .

Did you see that this idyllic county was named a top holiday destination ?

Plus: this new airline is launching flights from the UK to Italy .

New York City travel guide

What to do, where to stay and why you’ll love it.

The view of Manhattan from Brooklyn Bridge

B ristling with global icons — from Times Square and Central Park to the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building — New York is an urban colossus: a city of cities packed with colour, energy and possibility. A kaleidoscope of neighbourhoods and cultures, this massive metropolis can be overwhelming in its magnitude — but that intensity is all part of its prodigious appeal.

The city is split into five boroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens and Manhattan, and the latter tends to be the primary focal point for foreign visitors. Here, on the world’s most famous urban island, you’ll find everything you need for an epic city break and more, from world-class restaurants and cocktail bars to heavyweight museums and art galleries, as well as shopping and entertainment options to rival anything else on the planet. Constantly reinventing itself, NYC is not a city you only visit once, it’s a destination you dive back into whenever you can, allowing yourself to be carried along once more by its irrepressible flow.

There is, frankly, a little too much choice when it comes to things to do in New York , but a good start is always to lace up your most comfortable shoes and pound some pavement. It may seem strange considering its epic size, but New York in general (and Manhattan in particular) is a walking city. Simply strolling the streets here affords an excellent sense of the city’s character, from the ancient Jewish delis of the Upper West Side to the meandering cobblestone lanes of Greenwich Village and the hilly streets of Brooklyn, just across the majestic Brooklyn Bridge from Lower Manhattan. Don’t forget the graceful paths and trails of Central Park, the great green lungs of the city, either.

In recent years the High Line — the city’s popular elevated park, built along a disused railway line — has made Manhattan even more of a joy for pedestrians, with the final section linking to the shops and restaurants of the exciting new Hudson Yards development. After shopping and eating to your heart’s content here, you’re well positioned for another classic New York treat: catching a star-studded Broadway show, just a quick yellow cab ride away in Midtown West.

• How to do New York on a budget

Keeping an ever-watchful eye over proceedings, the Statue of Liberty* remains a must-see, with regular ferry rides to Liberty Island stopping at Ellis Island en route, where you can explore the captivating National Museum of Immigration. It’s just one of a magnificent assortment of world-class museums in the city, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History* , the Guggenheim* , MoMA ( Museum of Modern Art* ) and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Where to stay

New York might be the city that never sleeps, but you still have to – whether it be a superlative luxury hotel or a smart penthouse rental. Again, Manhattan is your best option, with Midtown a particularly good bet in terms of location and hotel options. Here you’ll find timeless classics such as the Ritz-Carlton* , the St Regis* , the Park Hyatt* and the Peninsula* , alongside boutique favourites including the Knickerbocker* , the Time* and 1 Hotel Central Park* . The last also has a spectacular sister property across the river — 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge* — which has become a flagbearer for fashionable luxury in Brooklyn, alongside other hipster-friendly boutique properties such as the Tillary and the Wythe (which just so happens to be home to one of New York’s most stellar rooftop bars).

If you want to extricate yourself from the madding crowd a little, head for Manhattan’s Upper East Side for some peace and quiet, where you’ll find well-heeled calm at permanent fixtures — I love the Mark, the Surrey and the Carlyle.

Food and drink

They say that you could eat at a different restaurant every night of your life in New York City and not exhaust the possibilities. Considering there are an estimated 25,000 restaurants across the five boroughs, with dozens of new establishments opening every month, that’s likely to be an understatement. The Big Apple is — and always has been — a world capital for food and drink, and your options here are near-limitless.

If you find the sheer amount of choice intimidating, head for the West Village — a quaint downtown neighbourhood where the twisting streets and well-preserved townhouses contain some of the city’s most intimate bistros, taverns and trattorias. Meanwhile, Little Italy in Lower Manhattan is, as you might expect, awash with incredible family-run Italian restaurants, while over in Brooklyn, Greenpoint (an old Polish neighbourhood with an ever-growing hipster population) has become the latest foodie hotspot.

If you want to go full kitsch, Coney Island, Brooklyn’s popular old beach neighbourhood where the hot dog was invented in 1867, is just a 50-minute subway ride from Midtown. Today the best hot dogs are served at Nathan’s Famous; the perfect fuel for an afternoon spent riding the rollercoasters and strolling the famous boardwalk.

The Empire State Building* is the obvious spot to head to for spectacular Manhattan views, but the better bet is the Top of the Rock, the 70th floor observation deck at the top of the Rockefeller Center in Midtown. Not only is it always less crowded, but it has wider observation decks (indoor and outdoor), offering striking views of the Empire State Building itself.

New York has so many museums that several excellent institutions inevitably don’t get the attention they deserve in mainstream travel guides, including the Skyscraper Museum, the Merchant’s House Museum and the National Museum of the American Indian, which are all well worth exploring.

Equally worthy of an entire morning or afternoon, Essex Market — a mainstay of the Lower East Side, selling some of the freshest ingredients and most imaginative street food in the city — recently moved into a sleek new space on Houston Street. Meanwhile, in Midtown West, Chelsea Market has transformed a crumbling former factory into another vibrant foodie hotspot. Just ensure you have some dollars in your pocket when you visit either market; some vendors won’t take credit cards.

Know before you go

It’s easy to forget that New York City swings between extreme temperatures. The height of summer can be unbearably hot, while the depths of winter can be bitterly cold. The best time to visit is in the spring and early summer — or alternatively, the autumn months between early September and Thanksgiving (late November). If you happen to find yourself in Manhattan during winter, don’t miss the outdoor ice skating in Central Park.

The subway itself can be daunting, but it’s straightforward enough if you take some time to understand the coloured number system beforehand. The most common mistake is taking an “express” train when you want a “local” one, so always double-check before boarding. Be particularly careful at weekends, when the rules often switch and some lines combine with each other.

Like most cities in the US , New York is sports mad. If you fancy a piece of the action, the easiest and most affordable way to do so is to aim for a baseball game, if either the Mets or Yankees are playing at home (the baseball season runs from April to October).

If you’re travelling with young children, it’s useful to note that there are two excellent zoos in New York City — one in Central Park and one in the Bronx; the latter is the larger, with more than 6,000 animal species spread across 265 acres of parkland.

Here are the places The New York Times just recommended people visit in Toronto

Latest Videos

The New York Times just published the latest in their series of '36 Hours' travel articles and this time the city they've written about is Toronto.

While normally I wouldn't trust a non-local for suggestions on how to spend your time in the city, the Times does a better job on these articles than most publications, detailing the best ways to spend a day-and-a-half in a city, and their recommendations for Toronto are actually not bad.

Here's everywhere New York Times writer Ingrid K. Williams  recommended you visit while in Toronto (even if you live here).

Detailing the best-of-the-best, the most-un-skippable of all Toronto experiences, Williams suggests exploring Trillium Park (even though part of it is fenced off ), eating at Kensington Market's Sunny's Chinese , visiting MOCA  in the Junction Triangle and grabbing a drink at Crybaby Gallery  near Dundas and Dufferin.

Attractions

Once you've exhausted the key stops, Williams suggests Massey Hall , Evergreen Brick Works , the Gardiner Museum , UofT's Philosopher's Walk, the Bata Shoe Museum , the Beach (as in, the neighbourhood), the McMichael and Zaal Art Gallery as must-see attractions.

Restaurants

Choosing a small selection of restaurants to be decreed as the "best" is kind of like picking a star in the sky and calling it the most beautiful. While not wholly wrong, it's also not entirely right.

In any event, Williams' list of Toronto's must-visit restaurants and food spots includes Patois , Bad Attitude Bread , Milky's Coffee , Taverne Bernhardt's , Bowie , Bathurst Local and White Lily Diner .

A smaller selection of small businesses made it onto the list (presumably because NYT readers will be busy visiting all those museums), but leading the charge are Easy Tiger Goods , Issues Magazine Shop and Etc Home .

If you're looking for more recommendations, I suggest Tusk for trendy womenswear, The Apartment Life for vintage decor and furniture and Acadia Art & Rare Books — a favourite of Guillermo del Toro's .

Williams also recommends a selection of hotels to stay at, like the Ace Hotel , the Drake Hotel , Ode or finding a vacation rental — specifically in or around Trinity Bellwoods.
