Tour the historic Williamson County Courthouse.

Built in 1909, the gorgeous Williamson County Courthouse is perhaps best known for being the site of what was considered the first prosecutorial success in Texas against members of the KKK in 1923.

Today, visitors can tour the courthouse through tours run by the Williamson Museum.

Go for a swim in Georgetown’s Blue Hole.

Discovered in 1963, the Inner Space Cavern offers a unique natural activity to explore and spelunk in a once-hidden cavern estimated to be over 20 million years old. Centered around an historic town square, Georgetown, Texas, offers great restaurants, cute shops, art, and theater. Despite being just a half-hour north of Austin, this town has developed an identity all its own. Its history, outdoor activities, and general charm attract visitors from all over who are eager to discover the fun things to do in Georgetown.

We visit Georgetown often and always enjoy finding new, interesting attractions to explore here. Here’s a look at some of our favorites.

Relax at Blue Hole Park

An ideal place to cool off in the heat, Blue Hole Park is just a few blocks from downtown. The lagoon is bordered by limestone bluffs that make it feel like it’s a remote Hill Country retreat.

Along the south fork of the San Gabriel River, the area is a great spot for swimming and wading on several levels separated (sometimes) by a small waterfall. The nearby tables make it convenient to have a picnic lunch or dinner. There are restrooms and free parking, too.

Shop at Lark and Owl Booksellers

Lark and Owl Booksellers is more than the cutest bookstore in town—it’s a community and the type of place that just invites you to hang out. It’s also home to Alouette Bistro, which serves sandwiches, pastries, small plates, and a literary-themed cocktail menu.

The women-owned store carries genres from thrillers to children’s books and aims to make everything an experience. There are regular book clubs, author readings, writers’ workshops, and creative events for kids like “Storytelling Through Tarot.”

The bookstore is an affirming and welcoming space, which is clear from the greeting you get the minute you walk through the door, whether it’s your first visit or your 50th.  Grab one of their recommended books and a treat from the bistro and settle in for a while.

Try a biscuit at Monument Cafe

A true gem in Georgetown, Monument Café has some of the best biscuits around. And that’s saying something in the heart of Texas.

The café is modeled after the roadside cafes of the 1920s but has a distinctly different spin—everything here is made fresh, and most vegetables are sourced from local farmers or grown in their own garden. They’re open daily for breakfast and lunch, so stop in for cinnamon rolls, chicken fried steak, one of their famous pies, or our favorite—biscuits and gravy.

See a show at the Palace Theater

A restored Art Deco theater, the Georgetown Palace Theater is a year-round hub of the arts in the city. They operate as a non-profit with the goal of bringing affordable, high-quality entertainment from multiple genres.

Nearly every weekend of the year, you’ll find something on at The Palace whether it’s a concert or a comedy show (both on the main stage and the nearby black box theater). They have a full season of plays and musicals like Jekyll & Hyde , Cabaret , A Tuna Christmas , and more.

Walk around Georgetown Town Square

Called the “most beautiful town square in Texas,” Georgetown Town Square is a must visit on any trip. This charming area is filled with boutiques, wineries, and galleries, and it makes a great stop whether you want to browse or just admire the buildings.

The structures here are an impressive collection of Victorian architecture with most buildings dating from the 1880s-1920s. The center is the striking Williamson County Courthouse, and it is surrounded by unique storefronts, most of which include distinctive pressed metal details. They have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976.

Take the time to appreciate the buildings or pop into a few.  Check out the offerings at 600 Degrees Pizzeria and Kork Wine Bar , or shop for toys for the little ones at All Things Kids. Music lovers will enjoy the selection at Ken’z Guitars , and La Bella Casa is the place for women’s clothes and home goods.

Shop and play at Sweet Eats Fruit Farm

Sweet Eats Fruit Farm offers so much more than what the name indicates. With pick-your-own, pony rides, face painting, an obstacle course, apple cannons, and much more, this entertainment-filled farm on Highway 29 is absolutely packed with things to do.

The farm market has lots of fresh food available and plenty of items to take home with you as well as a variety of farm-themed gifts. Visit the market and pick-your-own for free (items picked are paid by weight) or buy a general admission ticket that gives you access to dozens of activities. The seasonal festivals bring even more attractions, so check the calendar before you go.

Grab a cold one at Mesquite Creek Outfitters

A haven for visitors and locals, Mesquite Creek Outfitters pairs two favorite activities—shopping and drinking—in one unique location. From dresses and boots to baseball hats and buttondowns, there is a large selection of merchandise, but many people come just for the sense of community at the bar. Over 30 wines and beers are available along with a menu of light bites.

Reveal your inner explorer at Inner Space Cavern

Head underground at Inner Space Cavern to experience one of most extensive cave systems in Texas. At around 25 million years old, the cave has lots of interesting rocks formations. On a tour here, you’ll weave around stalactites, walk through narrow passages, and explore cathedral-type rooms all in this space that was only uncovered in 1966.

There are several tour options, and reservations are not required to visit. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for the underground environment—it’s 72 degrees year-round, but 98% humidity makes it feel like 80 degrees. There is also a gemstone and fossil panning activity plus the Saber Tooth Zip Ride, which takes riders 130 feet in the air.

Scout out the local street art

Street art is big here. From the “Greetings From Georgetown, Texas” postcard on the side of Gus’s Drug to the “North of Cool” mural on popular restaurant and bar The Golden Rule, there are lots of iconic pieces around town. Poppies, Pride motifs, and plenty of creativity is displayed on exterior walls, between buildings, and hiding in allies. Keep an eye out for the works as you explore all the fun things to see in Georgetown.

Go wine tasting at Grape Creek

One of the best wineries in nearby Fredericksburg , Grape Creek Vineyards has a tasting room outpost right on the square. Their 15+ wines—both single grape varietals and blends—feature Texas fruit grown in the Hill Country and High Plains. You can settle in for a tasting or enjoy a glass or bottle. The Viognier and Bellissimo (a Super Tuscan blend) are among our favorites.

Sample the options at Mikey V’s Hot Sauce Shop

If you like spice, don’t miss Mikey V’s . This unique shop specializes in hot sauces, salsas, and other tasty concoctions, many of which were developed by Mikey himself and are handmade in small batches. With flavors like peach habanero and roasted garlic reaper, there is a long list of award-winning products to try. They even run a hot sauce of the month club, so you can continue to sample new things.

The surprise in this family-run shop is the taco stand in the back. The gallery features the works of dozens of artists every year whose exhibits are free to visit and welcomes them for artist talks. It’s always interesting to stop by to see the newest works being displayed.

Housed in a building from 1892, the Art Center also offers a range of workshops and masterclasses in the attached studio. Beginner’s drawing, multi-day mosaic workshops, and advanced watercolors are just a few of the many options to explore if you have an extended visit to Georgetown.

Have breakfast at Sweet Lemon Kitchen

In a charming green house in the heart of downtown, you’ll find one of the best restaurants in town. Sweet Lemon Kitchen focuses on organic food with local ingredients and cooks up some of the best pastries you’ll ever have.

Indoor seating has cozy features like fireplaces and other Victorian details, and there is room to spread out at the picnic tables outside. Breakfast here is a highlight with croissant sandwiches, quiche, and outstanding cinnamon rolls and kolaches. Lunch is a huge selection of sandwiches and soups, and dinner leans heavily on pastas with a few grilled entrees. There is frequently live music at dinner.

Visit Rentsch Brewery

Georgetown’s only craft brewery, Rentsch Brewery has a family-friendly atmosphere and a large beer garden where you can hang out under the trees. They always have at least 12 beers available in a range of styles like Texas lager, Hefeweizen, and IPA. There is a food truck on-site most days or you can bring your own.

Learn about history at Williamson Museum

Williamson Museum offers engaging exhibits about the history of Williamson County and the people who have shaped it over the past 175 years. From pioneers and artists to teachers and outlaws, photos and artifacts tell the stories of local residents and change-makers.

Some of the most exciting offerings come with the museum’s regular tours and special events. They offer ghost tours, mystery nights, specialized workshops (including cocktail classes!), and presentations on a variety of topics. Their regular tours of the Williamson County Courthouse are popular.

For nearly 30 years, Master Hatter Nate Funmaker has handmade custom hats using traditional techniques. His equipment and his methods go back over 100 years, helping to create one-of-a-kind creations based on customers’ personalities, needs, and head shape.

A member of the Ho-Chunk tribe, Nate is the only Native American Master Hatter. His works have been worn by Jack Nicholson, Will Smith, and lots of business people, fishermen, and stylish folks around the country. 3. Inner Space Cavern

Discovered by the Texas Highway Department in 1963, Inner Space Cavern was officially open to the public in 1966.

The cave, which is the forth most extensive cave system in Texas, boasts loads of cool rock formations. Inside, you will see stalactites, stalagmites, pillars, and if you are lucky, even bats!

Inner Space Cavern offers up three different tours for you to choose from. Their Adventure Tour is a family-friendly tour that is a perfect introduction to the cave and its many formations.

For those of you feeling a bit more adventurous, be sure to check out the Hidden Passages Tour, the Wild Cave Tour, or the Ice Age Tour offered at Inner Space Cavern.

In addition to the cave tours, Inner Space Caverns is also home to a zipline, a playground, and a gemstone panning area.

After your cave tour, take time to browse the gift shop and see the many skeletal relics that were found inside of the cave.

4. Sweet Eats Fruit Farm

Sweet Eats Fruit Farm prides themselves on providing delicious, nutrient dense fruit that is also environmentally friendly. Now, I don’t know about you, but I can totally get on board with this!

One of the most popular things to do at Sweet Eats Fruit Farm is to pick your own fruits. Now, of course, what is in season will vary depending on the time of year you are visiting.

If you have a particular fruit in mind, then take note that strawberries are usually ready to pick around March and May, and stone fruits like peaches, plums, pears, and nectarine generally ripen between May and August.

Fruit picking isn’t the only thing to do at Sweet Eats though. Visitors can also enjoy the pony rides, petting zoo, play areas, and, even the on-site maze during their visit.

One of the biggest (and most popular) events at Sweet Eats Fruit Farm is the annual festivals that they hold on the property. The Fall Festival boasts a corn maze, a pumpkin patch, a food truck, live music, and more!

5. Blue Hole Park & Lagoon

Another of the hidden gems offering up exciting activities in Georgetown, TX is the 1200-acre Georgetown Lake.

Lake Georgetown is the perfect place to channel your outdoor enthusiast thanks to the many recreational opportunities open to visitors.

You can grab you rod and reel and try your hand at fishing. Anglers are known to pull white bass, catfish, and small and largemouth bass out of Lake Georgetown.

Jim Hogg Park and Cedar Breaks Park give you lake access to not only launch your boat, but they also offer picnic area, restrooms, and camping facilities with RV hookups. While Russell Park offers a designated swimming area in addition to the camping area that includes restrooms and showers.

Georgetown Lake is also a great place to enjoy some outdoor exercise. Hit up the 26 mile San Gabriel River Trail and make your way completely around the lake! Of course, if you’re like me and that is too much exercise for one day, you can choose just a section of the trail to explore.

During our time in Georgetown, TX, we visited Overlook Park and enjoyed walking a portion of trial while enjoying great views of the lake and surrounding prairie land.

7. San Gabriel Park

Head to the 180-acre San Gabriel Park if you want to continue exploring the great outdoors during your time in Georgetown, TX.

Located near the San Gabriel River, San Gabriel Park is a gorgeous park offering up loads of fun things to do in Georgetown, TX.

Open for breakfast and lunch, the Monument Cafe serves up some delicious home cooking food to both locals and visitors. Their convenient location right off of the town square means that they are quick and easy to get to while exploring historic Georgetown, TX.

Priding themselves on serving up as many locally sourced ingredients possible, the Monument Café will make you feel as if you are eating from grandma’s kitchen (and I mean that as a HUGE compliment).

Enjoy their made-from-scratch cinnamon rolls, pearl sugar waffles, or traditional migas if you are visiting during breakfast hours.

14. Old Williamson County Jail

One of the unique buildings dating back to 1888, is the Old Williamson County Jail located just a few blocks from the Georgetown Square.

The building, which was built in a Classical French Bastille style, is reminiscent of the some of the castles and fortresses we saw in Germany and Scotland .

The jail, which was used for almost 100 years, was home to some of the areas most notorious criminals.

Despite being closed to the public, you can still go by and have a look at the grand limestone building if you choose.

15. Veteran’s Memorial Plaza

The Veteran’s Memorial Plaza in Georgetown, TX pays tribute to the soldiers that have fought for the freedoms of our great nation.

Located in the Sun City Community of the city, the plaza is a place of remembrance for those who gave their lives fighting for our nation’s freedom.

The plaza consists of two walls made from bricks engraved with the names of veterans who served our country during various wars throughout its history.

16. Georgetown Murals

During your time in Georgetown, be sure to check out all of the fun street art and murals that are located around town.

There is a Greetings from Georgetown mural on the west wall of Gus’s Drug on University, and a beautiful mural titled “Traditions to the Future” located at 215 W. 8th Street.

One of my personal favorites is the mural titled, “Dreaming of Papaver Rhoeas” by Angela Effenberger. This gorgeous mural depicts the red poppy flowers that Georgetown is known for and can be found on the side of the Starbucks.

Other noteworthy murals include the “All You Need is Love” mural at 1202 Williams Drive and the “Everyone Deserves Kindness” mural that is located at 101 East Seventh Street.

Of course, these are only a few pieces of public art found around Georgetown. You will notice public art installations throughout the city. Just be on the lookout for it.

Georgetown is the county seat of Williamson County and a famous city in Texas; the city had a population of 47,400 at the 2010 census and 67,176 at the 2020 population census.

As of May 2019, Georgetown was the 7 th fastest growing city in the United States, the oldest university in Texas; Southwestern University is situated in Georgetown; this university was established in 1875 and was a combination of four colleges.

This city is also called “The Red Poppy” Capital of Texas because of the red poppy wildflowers planted around the city. At Georgetown Historic Square, the Red Poppy Festival is held in April annually, and over 30,000 people visit the city for this festival.

Georgetown was established in 1848, and some of the Victorian-era buildings are still standing, and the city was awarded “Most Beautiful Town Square” prestige. This city has various beautiful views, Scenic river parks, and annual festivals that attract tourists.

The Texas Highway Department discovered the Inner Space Cavern in 1963, permission was then granted to the Texas Speleological society to explore the area, and they found numerous miles of karst caverns.

Limestone has worn away in the caverns to create shapes, sinkholes, and structures. Skeletal relics of Ice age mammals like Mammoths and Saber-toothed tigers were found in the caves.

Approximately 1.2 miles of the caves were opened in 1966 to the public, three caverns tours are available for all ages, and group tours are also available. The Playground, Shop, fossil display, mining area, and caves are open daily. Tours are led by knowledgeable guides who will offer insights and point out unique formations.

This cavern is the fourth most extensive cave system in Texas and features stalactites, lovely rock formations, large pillars, and stalagmites. a visit to Inner Space Cavern is one of the best fun things to do in Georgetown, TX.

3. Rentsch Brewery

Rentsch Brewery is one of the best breweries in Georgetown; it is owned by Andrew Rentschler, who spent some time as a student in Germany studying biergartens and the art of Crafting Beers.

Returning home from Germany, he set up a commercial-grade brewery in his Parents’ Garage. After officially moving to Commercial Premises, demand exceeded supply, so he decided to double production and start a canning line. The brewery is mainly powered by renewable energy (solar and Wind Generated power).

Currently, this beer garden has expanded to over 5000 ft. and is open from Wednesday to Sunday; visitors can bring their food when touring or purchase from the food trucks around. 17. Old Williamson County Jail

Old Williamson County Jail was built in 1888 on the Williamson County Courthouse ground; this imposing jail was established to hold criminals. Touring this building is a popular activity in Georgetown.

What Is Georgetown, Texas, Known For?

Georgetown is known for being the Most Beautiful Town Square In Texas.

Georgetown is also a popular destination in April when the red poppies spring up and blankets of red spread throughout the town. It’s also when the Red Poppy Festival begins. But Texas’s most beautiful town square is also beautiful during the holidays. I’ve been both times. Whether you go for the festival, the holidays, or any time in between, you’ll have a good time visiting historic Georgetown and its unique places on the square.

Visit Georgetown, TX, hosted our 2-day visit, which included accommodations, meals, attractions, and compensation. All opinions are my own.

Georgetown is for everyone, whether you go with a girlfriend, as a couple, or with the whole family. It’s family-friendly, pet-friendly, and full of things to do – including golf, visiting a tasting room or two, breweries, parks with trails, a cavern, a river, and so much more.

Georgetown is beautiful! The city is simply gorgeous. Not just the town square for which they are known, but from tall trees everywhere to green grass at every corner, to the historic homes with manicured lawns and all the brand new homes we saw. It’s a place many consider living who want to be close to Austin.

Inner Space Cavern

Inner Space Cavern  is located in Georgetown and 20 miles north of Austin. It’s open daily from 9 am to 4 pm, with extended hours during the summer and on weekends.

Three types of guided tours:

• Adventure Tour – the one most people go on.
• The Hidden Passages Tour: Flashlight included to get down and intimate with the cave.
• Wild Cave Tour: We called this one “only for the brave.” This one might be for you if you like getting up close, face-to-face with the cave …on your knees and full body. $125 for a 4-hour guided tour. It’s definitely for the adventurist!

We lucked out. Our Adventure Tour guide was not only a great speaker, but he was also a retired biology teacher. He was very knowledgeable about this cave and more so because of his past profession. It was one of the best cave tours I’ve ever been on …and I like caves! See the website for prices and the new zip line course they have on the property.

Garey Park  is a great place to take the kids. The park has over 7 miles of trails, a play ranch, a dog ranch, pavilions with picnic tables, equestrian amenities, and more. You can enjoy nature and wildlife, and there is access to the South San Gabriel River.

San Gabriel Park

One of the best things to do in Georgetown is visit  San Gabriel Park. The park shows off many 200-year-old oak trees that provide visitors with unlimited shade. Access the San Gabriel River, San Gabriel River Trail, a Playscape for the kids, fishing, and lots of ducks who will like your company. My son loved it here when we visited about 3 years ago.

But that’s not all. Bring your sports equipment for soccer, sand volleyball, basketball, softball, and disc golf. Bring a family picnic and enjoy the day here. Restrooms are available.

Top Attractions In Georgetown Historical Square

Georgetown Square is a happening place. The walkable and beautiful town square has restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, art galleries, historical places, wineries, and ice cream! It’s a dream for me with every visit. Not only is Georgetown a quaint town, but it is also the most beautiful town square in Texas! But I bet you knew that already.

Below are a few of the attractions that are right on the square.

Georgetown Palace Theatre

Now Playing! Cabaret!

If you can see a show, you’re in for a treat. This former historic retro movie house has hosted live productions year-round for the past ninety years. See the Palace Theatre for the rotating productions showing in 2023.

The Williamson Museum

The Williamson Museum is a museum of the history of Williamson County, which was established in 1848. The museum has a wide collection of artifacts from the area and exhibits covering all aspects of this county’s past. Some exhibits include:

• A display of Texas history and culture, including information on early settlers at the Gault Archaeological Site.
• 175th Year of Williamson County display.
• Local Native Americans that once lived here.
• The full story (and photos) of Barbette the Performer (if you remember him back in the middle 1930s.

Admission: Free, but donations are appreciated.

Rentsch Brewery

Rentsch Brewery is a family-owned and operated brewery in Georgetown. It has won awards for its beer at the Great American Beer Festival (North America’s largest annual beer competition) three times. They have also been named “Texas Brewery of The Year” twice!

Blue Hole Park

Limestone bluffs border this picturesque lagoon and offer trails, picnic areas & a wading area. A great spot for family fun! Located at 100 Blue Hole Park Rd.

Georgetown Art Center

Many cool art pieces and masterpieces are in the square on South Main Street. Admission is free. While there, look for the beautiful white church called the Grace Heritage Center – it’s also stunning inside.

Sheraton Austin Georgetown

Sheraton Austin Georgetown – a Marriott Bonvoy Hotel is situated among Georgetown’s greenery and is minutes from the town square. It’s the only full-service hotel in Georgetown with that small-town feel everyone loves.

The Sheraton was our host hotel, and our room overlooked the heated pool and the hiking trails. We were so tempted to take a swim, but the rain said no. But there is always a next time!

We stopped by the visitor center and walked over to Blue Corn Harvest for a Southwestern fare lunch when we got to town. It was hard to choose what to eat because, as you can see, the menu is full of delicious food. We opted for the fish tacos and the salmon lunch. So much food!

If you like eating on outside patios in cool weather – this one is heated!

• 600 Degrees Pizzeria

A family place for wine, beer, and the best pizza in town!

Travel Tip: Lines are always long, but you can put your name on the list and go shopping. Your phone will beep when your table is ready – perfect!

• El Monumento

Opt for dinner on the patio with views of the San Gabriel River for traditional Mexican fare. I hear the margaritas are good, too! My son and I ate here, and I remember it being very good, and Brody loved the view of the river.

• Monument Cafe

Sister restaurant to El Monuneto. We were told breakfast is a must here. And it’s true. Besides the yummy omelet I ordered and my friend Amanada’s order of corn beef hash, we are not sure which we enjoyed more – the Kale Powerhouse juice or that cinnamon roll we took for the road trip home. We tried to even out our meal!

Travel Tip: Lines can get long. We ate at the bar.

• Brix And Ale

The on-site restaurant at the Sheraton Austin Georgetown. Amanda told me she orders eggs benedict whenever she dines for breakfast somewhere new. It did not disappoint, but she got full before finishing it up! I ordered an omelet with egg whites because I knew we were eating again later that day.

• The Golden Rule

We didn’t make it here, but we heard the sharing plates and international eats are spot on. Next time!

• The Coffee Lab

Open until 9 p.m. so you can drink coffee all morning, day and night!

• Cupcake Cafe

This place has a great atmosphere, good Wi-Fi, and an extensive menu of food items and drinks. They also serve beer, wine, and cocktails!

It’s located right next door to The Coffee Lab, so you can get your caffeine fix before heading home at night or pick up some sweet treats if you’re hungry or feeling peckish after dinner!

Red Poppy Festival 2024

Georgetown will celebrate its 22nd annual  Red Poppy Festival  with music, entertainment, family fun, and over 100 artisan vendors. Enjoy three days of RED ..everywhere!

If there is time in your visit, you may want to check out Lake Georgetown (kayak rentals), the beautiful Georgetown Courthouse, Southern University, and so much more in this quaint town.

Towns Near Georgetown, TX

Things to do around Georgetown, TX, include a couple of waterfalls in Round Rock. A winery or two in Cedar Park. If going to the city is interesting, Austin is not far from town and offers quite a bit, especially on 6th Street.

Day Trip Destination: Georgetown

Just under an hour from Austin,  Georgetown is known for its lovely main street, cool restaurants and bars and fun local shopping. Pick any weekend to get away and enjoy the slower pace without sacrificing great food and good fun.

The Georgetown Town Square is dubbed "The Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas", so it's only fitting that you spend time floating in and out of local shops, restaurants and bars. Stop in at the stunning  Georgetown Art Center , home to a rotation of exhibitions, education events and artist studios. Looking for that next good read? Independent and woman-owned book store  Lark & Owl Booksellers  features a variety of genres for book lovers of all types. More beloved Georgetown shops include  6 Whiskey Co. , Mesquite Creek Outfitters ,  The DayTripper World Headquarters and a wealth of antique stores .

Attractions

Outdoorsy types should plan to visit Lake Georgetown , a 1200 acre lake where visitors can fish, ski, hike and camp or spend a day splashing around Blue Hole , a lagoon bordered by towering limestone bluffs. Inner Space Cavern is one of the best-preserved caves in Texas. The cave tour is truly remarkable with thousands of stalactites and stalagmites. Athletic folks who have a penchant for extreme sports should book some time on the Challenge Course , a program that incorporates wall climbing, ropes, rappelling and more that’s great for a group or a team. Southwestern University is the oldest college in Texas, so it's worth adding a stop in your schedule to see a play or some art or just stroll the beautiful campus. After dinner, spend an evening at the historic  Georgetown Palace Theatre , which hosts regular performances for audiences of all ages.

Restaurants

Eat your way around Georgetown starting with  Sweet Lemon Kitchen . Fan favorites from the cottage cafe are their from-scratch cinnamon rolls, avocado toast, and honey cream latte. Or, stop in for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights for delicious food and live music. You’d be remiss if you skipped out on lunch at the famous Monument Cafe . Comfort food at its finest, this grandma-approved throwback cafe is worth the trip alone. Split a chicken fried steak and thank us later. Barbecue lovers should check out Hello Sweetie! BBQ . Ribs, pulled pork, brisket, smoky sausage, and all the fixin's are on the menu here, and they have a nice patio to enjoy some sunshine. For a sweet stop, there’s only one place to go, and that’s Hula Cowgirl Shaved Ice and given that we have such a long warm season in Texas, you’ll likely want something cool. They have tons of creative toppings and offer ice cream, as well. For something casual to end the day, consider 600 Degrees Pizzeria & Draft House , an award-winning pizza spot with inventive toppings and a wide selection of taps. Family-owned Fuego Latino Gastropub is another amazing option. Their menu is pan-Latin and features everything from Argentine empanadas to ribs in chile verde, pastor tacos to Costa Rican coffee. And then there’s the heavy hitter, the long-time Georgetown “fancy” place with log burning grills and smoke-infused everything, Wildfire . The menu is surf-and-turf heavy with an emphasis on game including elk, duck, lamb, and even ostrich. It’s housed in a beautiful historic building and is swank without being snobby. Definitely consider it for date night.

Bars & Nightlife

One of the best things to do on a nice day is find yourself a watering hole (or two) in Georgetown. Wine aficionados will appreciate that there are several options to choose from. Indulge in some vino at Kork Wine Bar , perfectly paired with their light Italian fare, or belly up to the long wooden bar at Barons Creek Wine Room .  The Golden Rule is a trendy spot with a fancy cocktail menu, a cool vibe, and a deep selection of high-end liquor, which can be enjoyed on their charming patio. If you have kids in tow who need to get the wiggles out, try Rentsch Brewery . It’s dog- and kid-friendly with a great outdoor setup specializing in old world German and new world American style beers.

The square is where you'll find some of Georgetown's most iconic and events, such as the Red Poppy Festival , an annual event that is well-known all over Central Texas. The festival features a parade with bands, floats, a classic car show, art displays, fun stuff for the kids, artisan market and more. The Square also hosts the Christmas Stroll . Twinkly lights make it seem like a winter wonderland and there’s no end to the amusements—a train ride, visits with Santa, bungee jump, a bounce house, mechanical reindeer, an obstacle course and even a human snow globe.

How To Spend A Fantastic Weekend In Gorgeous Georgetown, TX

Georgetown, Texas, which is known for having the most beautiful town square in Texas, has an authentic, small-town vibe that’s perfectly worthy of a weekend stay. The quaint, award-winning town is less than 30 miles north of Austin and makes a nice weekend getaway from San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas/Fort Worth. With several delicious local restaurants, three wine rooms on the square, art galleries, great shopping, and historic preservation, Georgetown might be Texas Hill Country’s best-kept secret.

Not only does Georgetown have a beautiful town square , but in 1990, according to Texas Highways, the Texas Legislature crowned the town the Red Poppy Capital of Texas. That right there would put this town on my travel bucket list for sure! My favorite color is red, and it’s everywhere at certain times of the year.

Georgetown is packed with ample family-friendly and outdoor activities throughout the year. Here is your guide on how to spend a fantastic weekend in gorgeous Georgetown.

Things To Do In Georgetown

Whether you are an outdoorsy person, an artsy individual, or enjoy live performances, Georgetown has fun experiences for your weekend agenda. And shopping is always part of the fun!

Shop In The State’s Most Beautiful Town Square

Every small town has something it is known for and unique places to shop, and Georgetown is no exception. Since its town square is the most beautiful one in Texas, I recommend anyone that comes here to start their weekend wandering through the town square and visiting the unique shops and restaurants that have given Georgetown its name. With mostly local-owned shops, you’re sure to find something unique and one of a kind.

And, for more shopping from local artisans, put the Downtown Georgetown Market Days on your calendar. The second Saturday of each month from March to November, this market features arts and crafts booths, clothing, ironworks, festive foods, collectibles, and more.

Catch A Live Show At The Palace Theatre

Located in historic downtown, The Palace Theatre offers year-round live performances including musicals, comedies, and dramas. Make it a romantic night to remember! Or, grab your girlfriends for a magical evening outdoors for a Steel Magnolias production. They’re held in the Palace Courtyard behind the theater after sunset. Now, that would be my pick.

Take An Inner Space Cavern Adventure Tour

Georgetown’s great natural wonder, Inner Space Cavern , offers three exciting guided tours. The Adventure Tour is their classic tour on a well-lit paved trail. You’ll see amazing formations and hear stories of how the cave was discovered. The Hidden Passages Tour provides guests with a flashlight to explore formations on a rugged view of the cave. And, their tour for the adventurer is their Wild Cave Tour, which offers participants a challenging adventure for sure! You’ll crawl, climb, and squeeze your way through remote parts of the cave with the best and most experienced guides.

Swim In The Blue Hole Scenic Lagoon

During the summer months, the Blue Hole is a popular place inside Blue Hole Park . Family and friends can gather here for some fun in the sun and enjoy the waterfall. Bordered by the San Gabriel River, this area is a nice place for locals and visitors alike to picnic, fish, hike, walk, and look for wildlife. The lagoon offers a nice wading area, which is a perfect setting for the whole family to enjoy the water.

Pro Tip: Blue Hole Park is walking distance from the town square and has restrooms.

Hike Or Bike The San Gabriel Trail

Take your time hiking or biking on the 9-mile trail along the river all the while looking for birds that call the river their home and viewing the wildflowers. For convenience, there are benches and water foundations along the way as well as restrooms. Then, after a nice time on the trails, head for San Gabriel Park and enjoy a picnic underneath one of the 200-year-old oak trees.

Check Out The Art Center In A Historic Firehouse

The newly restored Georgetown Art Center is the place to see and appreciate art on all levels. Each month, the Art Center hosts the works of nationally renowned artists and features arts and crafts created by local artisans in its gift shop.

Experience A Georgetown Sculpture Tour

The Georgetown Sculpture Tour is a juried, year-long outdoor exhibition in Georgetown’s Historic Downtown Cultural District and surrounding areas sponsored by the City of Georgetown. Fifteen sculptures will be chosen for display by the Board. I believe the stories and the thought process behind these one-of-a-kind sculptures deserve just as much attention as the art itself. Exhibits are changed out in November and stay up until the end of October the following year. There’s an interactive map on the website that shows the location of the sculptures.

Visit In Spring For The Red Poppy Festival

The best time to visit Georgetown (in my opinion) is during the red poppy season. Around the middle of March, red poppies start popping up everywhere and the red flowers can be seen throughout the Historic Old Town area. It’s quite the show. Each year in April, Georgetown has its Red Poppy Festival complete with music, a car show, a town parade, and of course, a red poppy tour and many more activities. From what I’ve heard, this three-day event is a must-do.

Pro Tip: If you love murals, Georgetown has about eight very colorful ones, including the infamous Red Poppy mural. You might want to wear red!

Best Restaurants In Georgetown

From downtown dining to fine dining to grab-and-go and many options in between, Georgetown’s restaurants will please everyone — and the pickiest palettes. If you’re looking for American classics, Mexican favorites, or French specialties, consider my favorites. If you’re on the go and don’t have time for a sit-down meal, don’t worry; there are plenty of places with drive-thrus and takeout!

600 Degrees Pizzeria And Drafthouse

Pizza, wings and beer oh my! Those trios just go together in my book. How about a slice of pizza larger than your plate? Okay, maybe not, but this restaurant is famous for its giant pizza slices. When a pizza place calls their pizzas “pies,” it’s gotta be good or at least worth trying out! Located on East Eight Street.

A steakhouse and saloon restaurant that’s been around a while in the Town Square, Wildfire is a favorite among locals. Enjoy a variety of meats cooked any way you like.

El Monumento

Three of my favorite things to look for when I go on road trips : Mexican food, fine dining, and affordability. A bonus would be outside dining on a deck or patio. El Monumento’s got it all. Plus, they make their frozen margaritas using an old-fashioned ice shaver, making the drink much like a slushy! Yum!

The Bistro At Lark And Owl Booksellers

Grab a book and order a healthy lunch at the bistro . After lunch, take a walk down to the Grape Creek on the Square Tasting Room for a glass or two of your favorite wine.

The Baked Bear

Ever undecided if you want cookies or ice cream? Hold that thought — at The Baked Bear , you can have both. End the day or, heck, start your day with one of their homemade custom ice cream sandwiches. There are vegan options, too. Located on East 7th Street.

Best Places To Stay In Georgetown

Small towns and charming places to stay go hand in hand. Though you’ll find plenty of hotels and motels in Georgetown, for a cozy and warm feel, opt for a quaint bed and breakfast or even a bedroom in someone’s home. If this appeals to you, you’re in luck because Georgetown has it all.

San Gabriel House Bed And Breakfast

Located in walking distance from the town square, the only bed and breakfast in town, San Gabriel Bed and Breakfast , offers their guests a place to relax and unwind in one of its six perfectly manicured guest rooms, plus a fresh two-course breakfast served each day. Enjoy lingering in their beautiful garden.

Going Solo? Book A Private Bedroom On Airbnb

Some of the best places to stay in small towns are found on Airbnb . Homes in small towns, in my opinion, offer the best accommodations and hospitality. I don’t mind renting a private bedroom in someone’s home who offers the amenities I’m looking for, like the use of their kitchen, a TV in the bedroom, and free Wi-Fi. That’s really all you need if your plans are to be out and about enjoying fun adventures. I actually found an adorable luxury private bedroom on Airbnb that I’m renting at the end of the year so my grandson and I can enjoy the holidays in Georgetown. The homeowner even offers her own guide to making the most of your time in town.

Camp Under The Stars

Pitch a tent at Tejas Park , a secluded area with just 12 primitive campsites located near the banks of the San Gabriel River. Sleeping out in nature is the perfect way to end a busy day of sightseeing and doing all the tourism stuff.

Since Georgetown is known for having the most beautiful town square in Texas , definitely start there. You may even want to end your weekend there, too! If the grandkids are coming along, pack a picnic and take them to Garey Park to play on the beautiful playground.

8 Fabulous Things to Do in Georgetown, TX

Georgetown, Texas is a beautiful town just thirty minutes north of Austin. It has a charming downtown area that has claimed the title, Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas, and the title is well deserved. We visited Georgetown this summer and found it to be a beautiful town with so much to do. Here are just a few of the many things to do in Georgetown.

Inner Space Cavern

Inner Space Cavern was discovered by the Texas Highway Department in 1963 and is one of the best preserved caverns in Texas. It stays a constant 72 degrees year round, though it can feel more like 80 due to the humidity. It’s a great way to experience nature without walking around under the hot sun.

They have multiple tour types to choose from. Adults and children alike can take a guided tour along the paths to see all the different cave ‘rooms’ and learn about the various formations, which lasts a little over an hour. The more adventurous souls can take the hidden passages tour, or the wild cave tour, which have you crawling around through tunnels and exploring more of the ‘back country’ areas of the cave, for up to four hours.

You can also enjoy gem mining and a zip line here, so it’s a great place to spend the afternoon!

We loved how the Georgetown water tower served as the backdrop for the entrance to this park. With miles and miles of trails, a beautiful fishing pond, an equestrian area, and, best of all, a kids’ splash pad and playground, you could easily spend all day here.

The splash pad sprays water down from a windmill and out of horses’ mouths and the kids have a blast swinging the horses’ heads around watching the water start and stop.

In addition to the splash pad, there’s an expansive play area, complete with a giant play structure, swings, and even a few mini zip lines!

Sweet Eats Farms

Sweet Eats Farms offers seasonal pick-your-own strawberries, peaches, sunflowers, pumpkins, and more, in addition to a host of farm activities. They offer a number of different festivals throughout the year, as well.

We loved how shady the farm was. It was 100+ on the day we visited and we were still able to do so many things.

We loved the petting zoo, horse/pony ride, metal maze, pig races, and most of all, the apple cannon. I’ll bet you had no idea how satisfying it could be to see an apple explode into pulp after hitting a haystack at ‘shot from a cannon’ speed.

Crockett Garden Falls

One of Texas’ best-kept secrets, this waterfall can only be accessed via a 5-mile roundtrip hike or a short kayak trip.

Ducks on the Pond is the kayak outfitter we used for this trip, and we left from the boat ramp at Russell Park. The paddle trip to the falls only took about twenty minutes, but due to low water levels, we had to pull up our kayaks on shore and walk over to the falls.

The waterfall is surreal. The moss-covered overhang drips down in a light drizzle you can easily walk through to get to the inside of the waterfall and look out.

Explore the Town Square

The town square is impeccably maintained with adorable shops in historic buildings lining the streets. There are cafes and coffee shops and even toy shops. We stopped into Kilwins for some of their delicious chocolate and ice cream and visited All Things Kids to check out their toy selection.

Mel’s Lonestar Lanes

Take a break from the heat and head indoors to Mel’s Lonestar Lanes. Enjoy a game of bowling or hit up the arcades. We visited during a crazy heat wave and were so grateful to find a fun indoor place to spend the afternoon!

More Things to Do in Georgetown TX

Here are some of the things we didn’t get to do, but would like to next time:

Berry Springs Park

This park is home to a majestic, century-old pecan grove. In addition to hiking trails, a lake, and a playground, there are also some donkeys you can feed.

One of the most famous things to do in Georgetown, Blue Hole is a popular swimming hole on the San Gabriel River. The dam creates a beautiful waterfall flowing into a shallow wading area and is a great place to cool off in the summer.

Where to Stay in Georgetown, TX

We stayed at the Sheraton Austin Georgetown Hotel & Conference Center , which overlooks the lush, green Rivery Park. We loved the beautiful outdoor pool and the free bicycles. They have a restaurant and a bar on-site for your convenience. The rooms are large, clean, and comfortable.

When we visit Georgetown for more than an afternoon, we love to stay at the Sheraton Austin Georgetown Hotel & Conference Center ! This dog-friendly hotel has it all!

• Heated outdoor pool (as pictured above!)
• Free WiFi and parking!
• Updated and modern rooms with all the amenities
• Two hotel restaurants: Jack’s Lounge and Brix and Ale

• And best of all, the Sheraton is just a short drive from downtown Georgetown!

What To Do in Georgetown, Tx

Downtown Georgetown (aka “The Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas”) is one of the top highlights of visiting this small Hill Country town.

A whole afternoon can easily be spent eating, drinking, and shopping through Georgetown’s Town Square. Plenty of Victorian style architecture line the streets.

Fun Fact : You can drink beer and wine on the street around Georgetown’s Town Square !

Keep your eyes open, there are plenty of history markers around town that make for a fun, impromptu history lesson!  

Downtown Georgetown is always buzzing. There are dozens of amazing things to do and places to visit in Georgetown’s Town Square but here are a few of my favorites. ( More are mentioned further down in this travel guide! )

• The Williamson County Courthouse is the focal point of the town square. Free tours are available on Friday afternoons.
• All around the square you’ll find sculptures, public art, and large wall murals. The City of Georgetown does tours so check those out if you want to learn about them all!
• Finally, Downtown Georgetown offers two monthly events: First Fridays (February to December) and Market Days (Second Saturday, March to November)

Blue Hole Park is just a few blocks north of Downtown Georgetown if you’re looking for a bit of nature while in town. Most notably, the park features a scenic lagoon that is perfect for swimming. There is also no entry fee to access the park.

Inner Space Caverns is one of the most well-preserved caves in Texas. With a truly unique discovery story, archeologists have discovered beautiful formations, large cavern rooms, and prehistoric animal bones over the past few decades. Tickets are available to purchase online or in person.

Lake Georgetown is a 1,200 acre lake that is heaven for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers. The lake offers boating, swimming, skiing, fishing, camping, a wildlife preserve, and 16 miles of hiking and biking trails.

Palace Theatre was built in 1926 and has been an important part of Downtown Georgetown ever since. Today, the theater showcases year-round season of musicals, dramas, and comedy shows. Check the theatre’s website for the full calendar of upcoming shows.

Where to Drink in Georgetown, Tx

Barrel & Amps (pictured above) is a full bar and restaurant upfront and an entertainment venue in the back. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Georgetown, mainly because they have a phenomenal craft beer tap list that I get to drink alongside their life-changing sliders.

Mesquite Creek Outfitters is often referred to as “Georgetown’s Living Room” and it’s absolutely one of my favorite places to visit on the square. It’s a retail area selling outdoor apparel, but also features bar with local craft beer and wine on tap!

Barking Armadillo Brewing (pictured above) is a family owned and operated brewery in Georgetown, Texas. They opened in 2020, right at the start of Coivd-19 outbreak. Since then, they’ve proved to be a valuable member of their neighborhood and have grown to feature a long list of interesting brews. Their taproom is dog-friendly inside and out, and the brewery features different food trucks on the weekends.

Barons Creek Wine Room is your place if beer is not your thing. As an outpost of Hill Country’s Barons Creek Vineyards, their downtown wine room provides a fun and unique wine tasting experience right on the square.

Lamppost Coffee (pictured above) is one of several coffee shops in Georgetown, but this one is my favorite. Lamppost is a cute coffee shop right behind the courthouse where they merge science and art together to prepare amazing drinks for their guests. They also started making their own syrups in house, which are so very delicious!

The Historic Downtown Georgetown area is centered around the Georgetown Courthouse.

Voted “The Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas,” the historic downtown square is the perfect place to start your visit to Georgetown, TX.

Here you can shop the boutique shops around the square or grab a coffee at a local coffee shop.

One of my favorite things is to hit up the wineries, like Georgetown Winery, and do a wine tasting in their tasting room!

Before you leave the historic town square, take time to visit the art galleries around the square.

Not only is it great to visit the local businesses, but the fact that they are located in historic buildings is also a treat!

2. Inner Space Cavern

4200 s. i-35 frontage road.

Inner Space Cavern is the fourth most extensive cave system in Texas, so it is worth a visit during your time in Georgetown, TX.

The caves, discovered by the Texas Highway Department in 1963, contain all sorts of incredible rock formations.

While touring the cave system, you will see stalagmites, pillars, stalactites, and possibly, bats!

Inner Space Caverns offers a fabulous introductory tour for people of all ages called the Adventure Tour.

They also offer a Hidden Passages Tour and a Wild Cave Tour that allow you to explore the cave on a different level.

While at Inner Space Cavern, you can also check out their zipline, playground, ice-age mammals, and gemstone mining area for a fun time.

3. Blue Hole Park & Lagoon

When I first visited Georgetown’s Blue Hole Park, I couldn’t believe this little oasis was just a few blocks from the historic Downtown Square.

The Blue Hole Park and Lagoon is the perfect place to connect with the outdoors in Georgetown.

One of the scenic river parks in Georgetown, this is the perfect place to enjoy a day swimming, fishing, kayaking, or sunbathing, thanks to the park’s location on the San Gabriel River.

The lagoon is truly a fabulous escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Surrounded by gorgeous limestone cliffs and small waterfalls, the lagoon portion of the San Gabriel River is a relaxing escape, making it the perfect place for a picnic lunch or an afternoon nap.

4. See a Live Performance at Georgetown Palace Theatre

Georgetown Palace Theatre is a historic theatre that welcomes visitors to enjoy live performances, including plays and musicals.

Ran by a non-profit organization, the performing arts center highlights local talent in its fun lineup of performances.

With shows like Beauty and the Beast, A Tuna Christmas, and Cabaret, you will surely find one that fits your style.

We had the opportunity to see Singing in the Rain during our visit, and we loved it. The performers did an excellent job!

Of course, I loved stepping back in time inside the art-deco-themed theatre.

The Palace Theatre also hosts summer camps and classes for kids and adults.

5. Eat At Monument Café

The Monument Cafe has been a staple in Georgetown for years.

Its recent appearance on the popular Food Network show, Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives means it is more popular than ever!

While you can visit during breakfast or lunch, I love eating breakfast at the Monument Cafe.

The made-from-scratch cinnamon rolls, traditional Migas, and sugar-crusted waffles are a few of my favorite breakfast dishes from the Monument Cafe.

Of course, you cannot leave without trying some of their fantastic pie.

Save room for this (or take a piece to go).

The Monument Cafe is conveniently located right off the town square, making it quick and easy to visit.

6. Sweet Eats Fruit Farm

14400 e. state highway 29.

For a fun and unique activity during your time in Georgetown, pay a visit to Sweet Eats Fruit Farm .

One of the most popular things at Sweet Eats Fruit Farm is picking your fruits, especially strawberries!

Sweet Eats Fruit Farm offers various seasonal fruits depending on the time of year you visit.

Strawberries are in season from March through May, and stone fruits like pears, plums, peaches, and nectarines are prime for picking between May and August.

In addition to fruit picking, the farm offers several other attractions for visitors.

You can check out the petting zoo, pony rides, play area, and an on-site maze!

In addition to this, Sweet Eats Fruit Farm also holds annual festivals on its property.

A massive draw during their festival is their corn maze, food truck, and pumpkin patch!

Of course, it wouldn’t be a festival without some live music, so you can also count on that during your visit.

Sweet Eats Farm is one of the hidden gems in Georgetown.

7. Lake Georgetown

Would you believe Georgetown, TX, is also home to a 1200-acre lake? It’s true!

Grab your rod and reel and head to Georgetown Lake to see if you can catch a fish or two during your visit.

Lake Georgetown is known for having white bass, small and largemouth bass, and catfish.

If you are looking for a lakeside park, Jim Hogg Park and Cedar Breaks Park give you lake access to enjoy exciting activities on the water!

Here you can launch your boat, have access to picnic areas, restrooms, RV hookups, and camping facilities.

Russell Park has all of this and offers visitors a designated swimming area to enjoy.

If the weather isn’t right for lake recreation, you can still plan a visit and take advantage of the miles of hiking and biking trails available around the lake.

The San Gabriel River Trail is a 26-mile trail that takes you around the lake.

If that’s too much of a hike, choose a small section of the trail to explore instead.

We visited Overlook Park during our visit to Georgetown Lake.

We enjoyed walking a portion of the trail while taking in the surrounding prairie land and fabulous lake views.

8. Georgetown Winery

Georgetown Winery was the first winery to open in Williamson County, so it is a must-visit during your time in Georgetown, TX.

Located in one of the historical buildings on the historic square, the Georgetown Winery offers gourmet food items, wine slushies, and a wide variety of wines in their tasting room.

I love their peach wine. It is delicious!

Be sure to do a wine tasting to discover your favorite wine from a great local winery.

9. San Gabriel Park

Another fabulous place to explore the outdoors is the 180-acre San Gabriel Park.

This incredible park is near the San Gabriel River and offers visitors hiking and biking trails, a playground, shade, and even a skateboard area.

There are also opportunities for fishing and swimming, thanks to the location on the San Gabriel River.

San Gabriel Park is perfect for free outdoor entertainment during your visit to Georgetown, Texas!

10. Georgetown Murals

Murals and street art are the latest craze.

You can find a mural or two when visiting small towns or big cities like Austin, Dallas, or Houston.

Of course, Georgetown, TX, is no exception to this rule.

There are fun murals and fabulous street art located all around Georgetown.

One of the most popular murals is the “Greetings from Georgetown” mural on the west wall of Gus’s Drug on University.

I loved the mural titled “Dreaming of Papaver Rhoeas” by Angela Effenberger.

The mural, which depicts the red poppy flowers that Georgetown is known for, can be found on the side of Starbucks. (I mean, it is the Red Poppy Capital!)

Other murals to check out include “Traditions to the Future,” located at 215 W. 8th Street, “All You Need Is Love,” which can be found at 1202 Williams Drive, and “Everyone Deserves Kindness,” which can be found at 101 E. Seventh Street.

This is only a sampling of the public art found around Georgetown, TX. Just look around. You are bound to see more.

11. Georgetown Art Center

The Georgetown Art Center is a non-profit organization that prides itself on making art more accessible to the general public.

Located in a building that used to be the city’s fire department, the Georgetown Art Center is located in a piece of Georgetown’s history.

During your visit, you can see the art exhibits and shows the Georgetown Art Center hosts throughout the year.

12. Williamson Museum

To dive into the history of Georgetown and Williamson County, visit the Williamson Museum .

Located in an old bank building, the Williamson Museum highlights the area’s history through educational displays, artifacts, and interactive exhibits.

The Williamson Museum offers free guided tours, which allow you to hear some great stories associated with the collection of artifacts housed at the museum.

The tours are also offered at the Civil War Cemetery and the Williamson County Courthouse.

13. Grape Creek On The Square

If you are in the mood for more wine tasting, then be sure to visit Grape Creek on the Square.

As its name suggests, Grape Creek on the Square is located on the historic downtown square in Georgetown, TX.

Take time to do a tasting in their tasting room and allow their professional staff to help you choose a new favorite wine during your time at Grape Creek.

After your tasting, purchase a glass (or a bottle) of your new favorite wine and head outside to the Grape Creek patio to enjoy some Texas sunshine.

14. Georgetown Public Library

You are probably wondering why we put a public library on our list.

That is because the Georgetown Public Library is home to much more than just books.

Of course, you can enjoy all the “traditional” library activities here, like reading books, listening to music, and using the internet and computers.

The Georgetown Public Library is unique because it also houses some incredible artwork, an on-site cafe, a coffee shop, and a bookstore.

15. Old Williamson County Jail

The Williamson County Jail is located a few blocks from the Georgetown Square.

This unique building dates back to 1888 and was used as a jail for almost 100 years, housing some of the most notorious criminals in this area.

Granted, the building is currently closed to the public, but you can still go by and check out the Classical French Bastille architecture made from Texas limestone.

16. Veteran’s Memorial Plaza

A visit to the Veteran’s Memorial Plaza allows you to pay tribute to the soldiers who have fought for America’s freedom.

The plaza, located in the Sun City Community of Georgetown, is a place to show respect and remembrance for those who gave their lives fighting for American freedom.

The plaza walls are engraved with the names of veterans that have served America during various wars throughout history.

It looks like there are plenty of things to do in Georgetown. I like that there is a combination of cultural and fun activities, but also that there is plenty of nature around. Good food is also a plus!

You are so right, Joanna. Georgetown really has so much to offer. A little something for everyone!

The winery in Georgetown, TX caught my attention right off the bat. :) Looks like lots of fun things to do that even my kids would enjoy.

1. walk the red poppy trail.

If you’re planning a trip to the Georgetown Square, don’t miss out on the beautiful sight of the red poppies in bloom. These bright red flowers typically bloom from mid-March – late April are an iconic symbol in this beautiful town.

Not only are they a gorgeous sight to behold, but they also have a special significance in history. The Red Poppy became the symbol of remembrance after a solder sent home red poppy seeds from Flanders’ Field during World War I and they began to grow wild throughout the town. To make the most of your visit, be sure to stop by the Visitors Center to grab a map with the locations of the Red Poppy fields surrounding downtown.

2. See History at the Williamson Museum + Historic County Courthouse

The Williamson Museum is the perfect spot for visitors looking to brush up on their history of Georgetown and its culture. Open Wednesdays – Saturdays and for scheduled courthouse tours as well, this spot is sure to both educate both entertain.

If you’re planning a visit to Georgetown Square, a stop at the Visitors Center is a must. Not only can you pick up a map and personalized information about the area, but you can also get complimentary seeds for planting your own red poppies. These seeds are a wonderful way to take a piece of Georgetown home with you, and you’ll have a beautiful reminder of your trip long after it’s over.

The staff at the Visitors Center are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and they’ll be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the area or offer recommendations for things to do. So be sure to swing by the Visitors Center before you start exploring the square – it’s a great way to kick off your visit and ensure that you make the most of your time on the charming Georgetown Square.

And if you’re gluten-free, don’t fret – Sweet Lemon Kitchen has got you covered with plenty of gluten-free options. But it’s not just the food that’s amazing – the ambiance is simply adorable, with rustic décor and charming little details that will make you want to return again and again.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Sweet Lemon Kitchen with my dear friend to celebrate her birthday, and it was amazing. We lucked out and got the perfect table on the front patio, bathed in sunshine – with perfect spring weather for a relaxing brunch. I loved the Quiche Lorraine and she loved her Frittata. The side salad with their signature lemon dressing was perfection. We couldn’t resist taking some of their delectable gluten-free desserts to go, and the staff even gave free samples to help decide between the seasonal strawberry muffin and lemon bundt cake. You’ll have to try both and decide which to order for yourself!

7. Pick Up an Ice Cream Cone from All Things Kids

This delightful shop is a wonderland of fun and excitement, with a fantastic variety of high-quality toys and books that are sure to appeal to children of all ages. Whether you’re looking for a special souvenir or just a way to keep the kids entertained for an afternoon, All Things Kids is a must-visit destination in Georgetown.

If you need to satisfy your sweet tooth, they also offer a mouthwatering selection of saltwater taffy and also ice cream cones in seasonal homemade flavors such as s’mores and Texas honey whiskey – perfect for those hot summer days.

8. Enjoy an Annual Georgetown Festival

Georgetown, Texas is known for its charming small-town feel, but what really sets it apart are its amazing annual festivals! Each year, visitors from all over flock to Georgetown to experience the magic of these beloved celebrations. One of the most popular is the Christmas Stroll, where the town comes alive with holiday spirit as twinkling lights, live music, and festive decorations line the streets. It’s the perfect way to kick off the holiday season and get in the spirit of giving.

As soon as Thanksgiving ends each year, our family heads to Georgetown to soak up the sweet, holiday spirit! The annual Christmas parade is an adorable tradition and we are huge fans of the incredible, interactive Bethlehem Village.

Another can’t-miss festival is the Red Poppy Festival, which celebrates the vibrant red poppies that bloom throughout Georgetown each spring. This three-day event is jam-packed with live music, food vendors, and family-friendly activities, including a car show, a kids zone, dancers, BMX stunt shows, and a parade. And of course, there are plenty of opportunities to snap some photos with the beautiful poppy blooms as a backdrop!

Other annual events include Fiesta Georgetown with a gorgeous, colorful parade in October, the Trick or Treat Trail and Georgetown Square Boo Bash, and 4th of July Celebration.

9. Shop for Something Special at a Boutique on the Square

Start your day by browsing the many shops and boutiques that line the square, including antique treasures at the Georgetown Antique Mall, handmade gifts and décor at Bella and Birdie, and gourmet meats and cheeses at Tejas Meat Supply. For foodies, Brazos Market & Boutique offers a wide selection of clothing and accessories.

And once you’ve worked up an appetite from all that shopping, head over to Grape Creek Vineyards Georgetown for a tasting of their award-winning wines.

1. Dance to live music

A thriving, open-hearted city, state capital Austin is also known as "the Live Music Capital of the World". 2. Get a taste of politics and power

4. Swim at an unusual spot

Normally popular with Austin locals in summer, Hamilton Pool Preserve is a natural swimming hole just 30 miles (48km) west of the Texas state capital. The bright green pool, fed by a 50-foot (15m) waterfall, was once entirely underground until the sheltering limestone roof above it collapsed. Usually, swimming is allowed between May and September, and visitors need to make a reservation online.

6. Burn the rubber

Speaking of motorsports, Circuit of the Americas near Austin is the first purpose-built track for Formula One in the US, and it now hosts the Formula One United States Grand Prix. Described as "spectacular" by many drivers, Circuit of the Americas also offers various tours and track experiences to visitors. There's COTA Karting for fun-loving families (in some karts drivers can be as young as 14) and a chance to whiz around the track in an Audi R8 V10 plus.

5. Cheer on a Texan team

If there's one thing Texans love, it's their sport and there's plenty of opportunity to embrace it all around the state. In Dallas there are NFL's Cowboys, NBA's Mavericks or NHL's Stars to follow; San Antonio is home to NBA's Spurs; while MLB's Astros, NFL's Texans and NBA's Rockets are based in Houston. You also shouldn't forget motorsport, which is hugely popular in the state. The Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth is home to both NASCAR and IndyCar races.

7. Journey deep underground

In 1963, the Texas Highway Department were drilling through rock to test if it could support an overpass in Georgetown, just north of Austin. When their drill bit dropped suddenly, they realized they'd stumbled across a vast subterranean network of karst caves. Now known as the Inner Space Cavern, the chambers are open to visitors, who are wowed by the sharp stalagmites, still pools and even coral (this was once the ocean floor).

8. Enjoy the best BBQ around…

Texas is part of the 'barbecue belt' along with the Carolinas, Tennessee and Kentucky. In this state, no food is a bigger deal, and Franklin (Austin) and Salt Lick BBQ (Driftwood) have long fought the battle for the best BBQ joint in Texas. Many gladly wait for hours to be served at both and both have been featured on countless "best of" lists. You'll just have to try for yourself...

Steak receives as much love in Texas as barbecue so you'll have to make time to eat plenty of both. With two locations just outside of Houston, Killen’s Steakhouse is an elegant place to relish perfectly seared steaks. From USDA Prime beef to Japanese wagyu, there's plenty for carnivores to get their teeth into – tasty starters and vegetable sides add to the menu too.

10. Go on a road trip

Starting out in Austin, the designated scenic highway US-290 beats a path west to take in Fredericksburg (pictured), in the heart of Texas Hill Country. It’s around one hour 30 minutes and just under 80 miles (129km) between these two enchanting cities and you’ll be traveling through Texan wine country too. In fact, given the abundance of wineries, the stretch of US-290 between Johnson City and Fredericksburg is known as Wine Road 290.

11. Make friends with the cutest animals

With a mission statement promising to "connect communities with animals" and "inspire action to save wildlife", Houston Zoo is a top destination for getting up close to an array of incredible species, and also learning about population management, conservation efforts and caring for endangered wildlife and their habitats. There are more than 6,000 animals from 900 species, so you could easily spend a whole day here getting to know black bears, cheetahs, Asian elephants, red pandas and more.

12. Imagine life as an astronaut

This is the world's best and most famous space museum, so to miss Space Center Houston would be a real shame. Your first port of call should be Independence Plaza, where you'll see a huge space shuttle replica. Next, head for the Astronaut Gallery: it boasts a large collection of spacesuits, coupled with stories about the people who wore them. The accessible exhibits are suitable for all ages and live presentations offer a glimpse of life beyond Earth.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, also known as RodeoHouston, is one of the largest livestock exhibitions and rodeos in the world. Ranchers, cowboys and spectators flock to Houston from far and wide to enjoy some of the best concerts of all genres, rodeo, beer and barbecue.

Only an hour's drive from Houston lies Galveston Island, and the beach town of Galveston. Here you can explore 32 miles (51km) of beautiful beaches, find some good old-fashioned seaside entertainment at the Pleasure Pier, and marvel at the historic homes in the downtown area. Finish the day with a stroll along Seawall Boulevard and a meal at one of the many restaurants on offer.

15. Roam around a palace

It’s a little small for a palace, but this beloved Galveston property is deserving of its name. Built in 1892, the Bishop's Palace is an impressive example of Victorian architecture, with its red turrets, gargoyles and bold, circular towers. It was the brainchild of celebrated Galveston architect Nicholas Clayton, who built many of the city’s most beautiful buildings. Still a great source of city pride and now on the National Register of Historic Places, it's open for tours and occasionally for special events, such as high tea.

16. Dip your toes in the water

Beaches and barrier islands might not be the first things that come to mind when you think of Texas, though that will change once you dip your toes in the calm, clear waters that lap the sand at South Padre Island. It’s a popular spring break spot with happy hour cocktails, sunset cruises and activities from dune buggying to kiteboarding. To escape the crowds, head straight for the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center – more than 3,300 feet (1km) of boardwalk and a five-story watchtower are both perfect for observing migratory birds.

The Alamo mission and fortress complex was a key site during the Texas revolution. It was the location of the fabled Battle of the Alamo in 1836, which saw the Texans fight off thousands of Mexicans in their fight for independence. The Alamo church, or the Shrine as it is commonly known, is the heart of the complex: the names of the Texan soldiers who defended the mission can be found inscribed inside.

The 750-foot-tall (228.6m) Tower of the Americas has one of the highest observation decks in the country, alongside a bar, restaurant and 4D rides. A glass-fronted elevator allows you to take in vistas of downtown before you even reach the top. Once you're into the viewing area, historical displays will help you make sense of the pocket-sized buildings below.

22. Enjoy a wild ride

Six Flags Fiesta Texas' wood-steel hybrid roller coaster is stomach-churningly good with a satisfying series of speed-filled twists and turns. It features a whopping 171-feet-tall (52m) drop which is taken at an 81-degree angle, four steep overbanked turns and an inverted barrel roll. And that’s all taken at fierce speeds of up to 70 miles per hour (112.6km/h).

23. Be in awe of a light show

Home to the oldest continuously functioning religious community in the state of Texas, San Fernando Cathedral has been at the center of San Antonio's religious life since its inception in 1731. Occupying a unique position in the state's history, the cathedral today welcomes more than 5,000 participants at weekend Masses every week. It's also famous for San Antonio | The Saga – a light show depicting the history of San Antonio projected onto the façade of the cathedral every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

24. Spot autumnal foliage

Texas might not be your first thought when planning a leaf-peeping trip, but the Lost Maples State Natural Area gives the North East a run for its money. The site rambles for more than 2,000 acres, sewn with miles of hiking trails allowing visitors to delve deeper into the fiery fall foliage. The West Trail covers a great expanse and includes a breathtaking overlook, while the shorter West Loop Trail takes in one of the site's rushing springs.

25. Experience a slice of Germany

Fredericksburg proudly describes itself as having a Texas heart with a German soul, since it was established by German settlers in the 1840s. The city still wears its German heritage on its sleeve, with beautifully preserved German-style architecture, detailed exhibitions at the Pioneer Museum and events such as Oktoberfest. It’s hard to find somewhere better to disconnect than Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas. Characterized by dramatic, seemingly endless landscapes, the park gives a feeling of complete isolation. Around 100 miles (160.9km) east of El Paso, right in the northwestern corner of the state, lies Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Home to the four highest peaks in Texas, it's popular with hikers thanks to more than 80 miles (129km) of trails that stretch through woodland canyons. There's plenty of wildlife to spot as well, including golden eagles, and the visitor center in Pine Springs offers more information on the park, as well as all the details on hiking and biking trails. 

30. Marvel at the second-largest canyon in the US

Palo Duro Canyon State Park, located in the Texas Panhandle, is home to the second-largest canyon in the United States (trumped only by the famed Grand Canyon in Arizona). Its rugged red scarps are dotted with shrubs and when it comes to sunsets, Palo Duro rivals its better-known western counterpart. You can horse ride, bike or hike the park's miles of trails, spend the night in a rustic cabin and even see live music at the park's open-air amphitheater.

Fun and sometimes bizarre roadside attractions are huge in the US and Texas sure does have some of the best. Cadillac Ranch, just outside of Amarillo in northern Texas, is an art installation that consists of a series of upturned cars painted in bright colors and psychedelic-like patterns. Installed in 1974, using 10 junk Cadillacs, it's now become a popular tourist attraction in this area.

32. Live the ranch life

Located around 80 miles (129km) northwest of Fort Worth, you'll find the Wildcatter Ranch & Resort in Texas' Panhandle Plains. A unique escape from the city, it offers a taste of ranch life in total comfort. Perfect for family vacations, special events or simply to get away from it all, the ranch offers a choice of accommodation, from cabin suites to cottages and guesthouses. Once you've spent the day horseback riding, hiking or relaxing by the pool, the Steakhouse restaurant offers excellent on-site dining.

Better known as The Modern, Fort Worth's Modern Art Museum is recognized as having one of the foremost collections of international modern and contemporary art in the central United States. Designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando and opened to the public in 2002, the museum building consists of five large pavilions set into a reflecting pond. The Modern's collection currently consists of almost 3,000 pieces including works by Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Cindy Sherman.

If you happen to be in Fort Worth's Stockyards at 11.30am and 4pm and see cattle roaming along East Exchange Avenue, there’s no need to be alarmed. Fort Worth’s herd of Texas longhorns at the city’s Stockyards is the only twice daily cattle drive in the world. And it’s managed by authentic Texan cowhands too.

One of Texas' best museums, the Dallas-based Perot Museum of Nature and Science promises to be an exciting day out for kids and adults alike. Named after Ross Perot, who made billions as the founder of Electronic Data Systems, the museum hosts exhibits ranging from interactive dioramas depicting the Texan ecosystems to the world's third-largest gold nugget. There's even an opportunity to build your own robot.

37. Get lost in fragrant flowers

With the Dallas skyline stretching into the distance, you can temporarily turn your back on the city to get lost in one of the top arboretums in the world. With over 500,000 tulips and over 100 different varieties of spring flowers, the Dallas Blooms festival provides the perfect floral backdrop to the wine tastings, picnics and live events that take place there. Plus, it's perfect for youngsters thanks to the dedicated Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden with a wetlands area and a canopy tree walk.

If you want to learn more about the life and assassination of President John F. Kennedy, take a trip to the Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas. Located in the old Texas School Book Depository building, where a sniper’s perch and rifle were found on the sixth floor after President Kennedy was assassinated in Dealey Plaza, the museum chronicles the life and legacy of the president through the lens of his assassination in 1963, with historic images and news footage.

40. Paddle in a fairy-tale lake

This tucked-away Texan escape hugs the state’s border with Louisiana. The Caddo Lake area is an ethereal mix of swampy bayous, ponds and cypress trees, which rise from the water and drip with Spanish moss. People (though not too many – don’t worry) come here to fish from the pier, paddle around the maze of waterways or just rent one of the park’s cabins.

Soon Texans will get to see something that rarely happens . The total solar eclipse is set to be seen on April 8, according to NASA . The path of the eclipse will be along a southwest-to-northeast line through North America. Scientists say it will be the last total solar eclipse visible to the world until 2044.

Here’s where you can see it. 

Texas public parks where you can see the solar eclipse

The moon will start to cover the sun around noon on April 8. Totality will begin at 1:30 p.m. near Del Rio and trace a line northeast across Texas.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon shifts between the sun and Earth, blocking the sun's face. 

Totality will last from a few seconds to about 4.5 minutes , depending on the direction you're on in its path. Only those in the path of totality will get the full eclipse experience.

Here’s a list of parks where you can watch the eclipse : 

Make a reservation (if there are any) ahead of the solar eclipse

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, it's important you make a reservation before you arrive at any of the state parks.

Here's what you should expect if you decide to arrive:

• Come early and stay late : Expect traffic delays across the state. We anticipate visitors from across the state and nation for the eclipse.
• Pack more than a snack : Be sure you have extra food, water and fuel in case of delays.
• Park in designated areas only : Stay off roadways for your safety. Don't park off the pavement unless directed by park staff.
• You may not be able to connect:  In some areas of totality, cell phone networks and the internet might be jammed.

2024 solar eclipse watch parties in Texas

Here are some watch party locations: 

• Hilton Austin  (500 East 4th Street, Austin, TX) — Hilton Austin will have eclipse-themed cocktails and mocktails, as well as free eclipse viewing glasses on April 8. This event runs from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., and admission is free.
• Levy Event Plaza  (501 E Las Colinas Blvd, Irving, TX)  — Irving is offering a Total Eclipse in the Park Party. The event will feature food trucks, music and free eclipse glasses. The event is from noon to 3 p.m. 
• Space Center Houston  (1601 E NASA Parkway, Houston, TX) — The Space Center of Houston is having a three-day event April 6-8. The event includes eclipse glasses giveaway, eclipse and space expert lightning talks in Independence Plaza with emcee Gary Jordan of NASA’s “Houston We Have a Podcast,” and more. Tickets for that event can be  purchased here . 
• Dam 2024 Eclipse  (507 Hi-Line Dr., Buchanan Dam, TX) — The event will feature presentations by scientists, eclipse glasses, and music. The event runs from noon to 3 p.m.
• The Alamo Eclipse Watch  (300 Alamo Plaza San Antonio, TX) — Watch the total solar eclipse from the iconic Alamo at this free event with complimentary solar eclipse glasses. The event runs from noon to 3 p.m.

How to see the solar eclipse safely in Texas

Make sure you protect your eyeballs. Wear appropriate eyewear.  

Here are some  safety tips provided by NASA : 

• View the sun through eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer during the partial eclipse phases before and after totality.
• Although not recommended to watch the eclipse without specialized eye protection, it's possible to view the eclipse directly without proper eye protection only when the moon completely obscures the sun’s bright face – during the brief and spectacular period known as totality. (You’ll know it’s safe when you can no longer see any part of the sun through eclipse glasses or a solar viewer.)
• As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright sun reappear after totality, immediately put your eclipse glasses back on or use a handheld solar viewer to look at the sun.

Where can I get free solar eclipse glasses?

Retail company Warby Parker  is giving away free, ISO-certified solar glasses in preparation of the event. They will be available April 1-8 or while supplies last. Click here to find a Warby Parker near you.

Where to find solar eclipse glasses in stores

While the American Astronomical Society lists large retailers selling eclipse-viewing equipment, it also warns against online purchases. Products sold on companies' sites might use different suppliers from those sold in stores.

On Monday, a solar eclipse will cross from Texas to Maine, putting over 30 million people in the path of totality , with a partial eclipse visible briefly for millions more.

Monday's weather forecast for the path of totality

Totality in the U.S. starts around 1:30 p.m. CT/2:30 ET and continues until 2:30 p.m. CT/3:30 p.m. ET, lasting for a few minutes in each location.

When and where the solar eclipse will be crossing the U.S.

A total solar eclipse will grace the skies over North America on Monday, one of the most hotly anticipated sky-watching events in recent years.

Weather permitting , millions of people in Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada will have the chance to see the moon slip between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light .

The total solar eclipse will be visible along a “path of totality” that measures more than 100 miles wide and extends across the continent. Along that path, the moon will fully obscure the sun, causing afternoon skies to darken for a few minutes.

In all other parts of the continental U.S., a partial solar eclipse will be visible, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun. Exactly how big a bite depends on the location.

The first spot in North America that will experience totality on Monday is on Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PT, according to NASA .

After moving northeast across Mexico, the eclipse’s path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Slivers of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

In Canada, the eclipse will be visible in parts of southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

The timing of the eclipse and the duration of totality varies by location. Most places will experience around 2 minutes of darkness, but the longest periods of totality are typically in the center of the eclipse’s path.

This year, the longest stretch of totality will last 4 minutes and 28 seconds in an area northwest of Torreón, Mexico.

• Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m. CT.
• Idabel, Oklahoma: Partial eclipse begins at 12:28 p.m. CT and totality at 1:45 p.m. CT.
• Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m. CT.
• Poplar Bluff, Missouri: Partial eclipse begins at 12:39 p.m. CT and totality at 1:56 p.m. CT.
• Paducah, Kentucky: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 2:00 p.m. CT.
• Carbondale, Illinois: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 1:59 p.m. CT.
• Evansville, Indiana: Partial eclipse begins at 12:45 p.m. CT and totality at 2:02 p.m. CT.
• Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
• Erie, Pennsylvania: Partial eclipse begins at 2:02 p.m. ET and totality at 3:16 p.m. ET.
• Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
• Burlington, Vermont: Partial eclipse begins at 2:14 p.m. ET and totality at 3:26 p.m. ET.
• Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.
• Caribou, Maine: Partial eclipse begins at 2:22 p.m. ET and totality at 3:32 p.m. ET.

If you plan to watch the celestial event, remember that it’s never safe to look directly at the sun, including through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses. Special eclipse glasses are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent permanent eye damage.

Here's a guide to help you prepare for the 2024 Solar Eclipse spectacle happening on Monday.

WHEN TO SEE THE SOLAR ECLIPSE IN SOUTH CAROLINA?

While Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas are not in the path of totality, NASA Ambassador Tony Rice said part of the rare total eclipse will be visible.

For Carolinians, the solar show starts just before 2 p.m. with a partial eclipse, and will then peak around 3:10 p.m.

Below is a breakdown from the National Weather Service in Charleston of peak timing for Lowcountry and Coastal Empire viewers:

Charleston:

• Begins: 1:53 p.m.
• Peaks: 3:10 p.m.
• Ends: 4:24 p.m.
• Begins: 1:50 p.m.
• Peaks: 3:07 p.m.
• Ends: 4:22 p.m.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

The eclipse from the moment the moon begins to block the sun in Eagle Pass, Texas, begins at approx. 12:10 p.m. CDT. It will take three and a half hours before the moon exits the sun's path in Houlton, Maine, at 4:40 p.m. EDT.

The total solar eclipse event (totality) where the moon perfectly blocks the sun, lasts anywhere from a minute to almost five minutes, depending on where it is viewed from.

ECLIPSE'S PATH OF TOTALITY

The path of darkness is usually less than 150 miles wide, but will be a long and narrow path that will dash into the country. In the U.S., it will cross Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine before exiting over eastern Canada into the Atlantic.

TIME OF SUN'S DISAPPEARING ACT

The path of totality will enter Texas at 1:27 p.m. local time. It'll reach Maine at 3:35 p.m. local time before it moves out to sea.

PREPARE TO WATCH THE ECLIPSE SAFELY

You will need to protect your eyes with proper eye protection to view the total solar eclipse. "Eclipse glasses" or handheld solar viewers, which are thousands of times darker than sunglasses, are advised to use to watch a partial solar eclipse or the partial phases of a total eclipse.

According to NASA, it is never safe to look directly at a partially or uneclipsed Sun without proper eye protection. Only during the brief moments of totality during a total solar eclipse can you look directly at a solar eclipse without eye protection.

For those wanting a closer look, experts advise placing a safe solar filter on the front of a telescope, binoculars, or camera. The filter will protect optics from the Sun's intense heat and light.

Some astronomy aficionados are paying top dollar to catch the upcoming total solar eclipse, but there are plenty of options to take in the rare astrological phenomenon for free.

If you find yourself in the path of totality, you'll want to make sure that you're using eye protection before turning your gaze upward. Experts warn against looking at the obscured sun for "even a split second," emphasizing that the solar radiation can burn the inside of your eyes and potentially cause irreversible damage.

The eclipse will take place the afternoon of Monday, April 8, with parts of states like Texas, Ohio and New York falling into the path of totality.

Normal sunglasses aren't strong enough to protect your eyes from harm. Instead, you'll need special protection designed specifically for observing an eclipse.

Luckily, both government organizations and private businesses are distributing eyewear that meets the requirements set by the American Astronomical Society.

Your local public library

Libraries across the nation are distributing glasses for free. To see which libraries near you have glasses available, check out this interactive map from Star Net.

With a good chunk of the Empire State falling in the path of totality, New York is distributing free glasses at locations including New York State Welcome Centers and Thruway Rest Stops.

Chain restaurants Sonic and Smoothie King are offering free eclipse glasses with a purchase.
