Mahon-House

Description of the experience

We will start our visit in Plaça de s'Esplanada to discover some of the most important buildings of the time: Els Quarters, built to prevent the accommodation of troops in private houses.

We will get to know the Town Hall, from the 17th century but renovated in 1789 with a French Baroque style. Did you know that the clock in its tower was imported from England around 1731?

We will also visit the Principal de la Guardia, used as barracks during British domination. And, of course, the Palau del Gobernador, where Governor Richard Kane moved the capital from Ciudadela to Mahón in 1722.

We will explore its streets and squares, visit Quintana Gran, the old market, Plaça Vella, or Hannover Street. We will also show you how the British presence can still be appreciated today in many architectural details, with elements such as sash windows or the so-called boínders (balconies enclosed with glass, which take their name from the English bow window).

15 Things to do in Mahón, Menorca – if you only have one day

Menorca is the smallest and calmest of the Balearic islands, a haven for lovers of understated luxury. It’s a place that doesn’t like to boast too much about its charms, but is full of history, fashion and great food.

If you’re flying in to Menorca, or visiting on a cruise, why not take a day or so to explore Mahón, the elegant capital of the island. For those who enjoy mellow old buildings, stylish shopping and lazy seafood lunches by the port, here are some of the best things to do in Mahón, Menorca.

1. Mahon harbour – take a boat trip

Start your day in Mahón with a relaxing 1 hour boat tour around the harbour, to dip into the naval history of the area. Because of the city’s deep harbour and strategic position in the Mediterranean, the British dominated the island for much of the 18th century and have especially left their stamp on Mahón, Menorca.

Harbour of Mahon in Menorca Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Buy your ticket at the kiosk at the bottom of the steps close to the cruise terminal and take your seat on the top deck for the best view, or retreat downstairs if it’s a bit too windy. As you pass the main sites of interest, there’s a commentary in several different languages including English.

You can book your harbour boat tour in advance with this 1 hour cruise of Mahon harbour with commentary

Historical commentary

To start with, our harbour tour passed by some of the swanky villas where the wealthy folk of Mahón live. We passed the English Arsenal, painted red as was the custom for military buildings. Further on is the Quarantine Island with a hospital where those with infectious diseases were treated.

I imagine that those who went in wondered whether they would ever emerge alive. Near the harbour entrance, the water got quite choppy as we passed briefly to the open sea. As soon as we turned around the water calmed again, and we returned past Cales Font, the pretty harbour of Es Castell which was the 18th century British garrison town.

The harbour boat tour is run by 2 main operators, the Yellow Catamaran and the Don Juan Catamaran. Between them they run every half an hour throughout the day, selling drinks and snacks on board.

2. Elegant buildings overlook the harbour

Back on dry land, let’s climb up those white flights of steps to start to explore Mahón properly. As you near the top, look up to your right to see the elegant Art Nouveau facade of Casa Mercadel.

Up on your left there are plenty of viewpoints where you can have a drink with a view over the port. To your immediate left are two huge trees with roots like an elephant foot which are a well known landmark.

The elegant Casa Mercadel was one of the homes owned by a noble Menorcan family and was built in on the site of an ancient castle that overlooked the harbour, now housing a cultural centre.

3. Mahon fish market

In Placa d’Espanya at the top of the steps, you’ll find the Mercat de Pescados or fish market with all the lovely fresh fish on sale until 2pm (closed Sunday and Monday).

Fishmarket in Mahon in Menorca Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

The bright red prawns and spiny lobster are used to make the lobster caldereta and other seafood dishes that you can order at restaurants along the seafront. Despite all the groups of tourists trooping through to take photos, the stall holders were very good humoured and relaxed.

4. Tapas in the fish market of Mahon

Walking past the fish you’ll come around to the other side of the market with stalls selling tapas, snacks and drinks. If you’re ready for a mid-morning break, this is the place to grab a drink and a snack, sitting at one of the stools inside or tables outside in the courtyard. On a Saturday lunchtime the place was buzzing with locals meeting their friends for a glass of wine and a chat.

Tapas in the fish market of Mahon in Menorca

The tapas typically cost between €1 and €3 and you can just point at whatever takes your fancy. I loved all the glistening olives and the appetising slices of bread topped with onions, peppers and anchovies.

There was also a stall selling tasty seafood croquettes so I had to try a few of those as well, including one that was black with squid ink. If you just want an aperitif and a light bite in the evening, this is also a great place to come.

5. The Carmelite cloisters in Mahon

A little further up the square next to the fish market is the Carmelite cloisters which has been converted to a covered market selling everything from fruit and veg to shoes and local food specialities. It’s a good place to shelter if you get caught in a shower.

Also worth knowing is that there’s a public WC here as I didn’t find one anywhere else in the old town. There are several stalls selling food and snacks and the central courtyard is often used for concerts and events.

6. Ca’n Oliver in Mahon – a historic house in Menorca

If you’d enjoy visiting historic houses, pay a visit to Centre d’Art I d’Historia Hernandez Sanz at Ca n’Oliver, a mansion which belonged to one of the most powerful families of Mahon in the 18th and 19th centuries.

This gorgeous house now houses the Hernandez Sanz collection of artworks which are on display over several floors around the ornate wrought iron staircase with a painted fresco to impress you in the lobby.

If you want to see more of Menorca, check out this guided full day island tour that takes you to Menorca’s ancient capital of Ciutadella.

The paintings, maps and displays give insights into the British legacy on Menorca as well as the Oliver family who made their money as merchants in the Mediterranean and supplied the military in Mahón.

I especially enjoyed the painted ceilings with religious and classical scenes in many of the rooms, designed to show the wealth and taste of the family who lived here.

Centre d’Art I d’Historia Hernandez Sanz at Ca’n Oliver, Anuncivay Street 2. Open daily except Monday 10-1.30pm and on Thursday, Friday, Saturday also 6-8pm.

7. The Museum of Menorca in Mahon

Another fascinating place to visit is the Museum of Menorca in the old Franciscan monastery which was built in the baroque style at the end of the 17th century but confiscated in 1835. There are rooms off the beautifully preserved cloisters with an interesting exhibition about the Talayotic culture on Menorca, explaining the background of some of the stone burial chambers and settlements I’d seen in different parts of the island.

Museum of Menorca in Mahon in Menorca Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

On the upper floors you can also see rooms which cover the history of Menorca from the earliest times, through the 18th century when the island was occupied variously by the English, French and Spanish, to the 20th century when the industries of shoe and jewellery making replaced shipbuilding.

8. A leisurely lunch by the Port of Mahon

By around 1.30 the shops and museums will be starting to close so it’s time to find somewhere to have a leisurely lunch. Of course there are plenty of bars and cafes in the old town but a great alternative is to walk back down to the main port area where you’ll find a string of bars and restaurants overlooking the marina.

Settle in to a table with a view of the harbour, so you can people-watch from behind your designer sunglasses and oggle a few of those expensive boats. Most restaurants have a well-priced set menu at lunchtime that includes 3 courses, wine and bread with both seafood and meat options.

We really enjoyed La Minerva (Carrer Moll de Llevant, 87) which has a nice terrace. Try their Arroz, a cross between soup and risotto with rice and seafood in a rich sauce, which is what Menorcan families like to eat on a Sunday.

Seafood in Mahon in Menorca Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

9. Wander around Mahon old town

After lunch most of the shops will be shut until around 4.30pm, so it’s a good time to wander around the streets of the old town while they are less crowded and admire the mellow stone buildings. Turn your back on the fish market and walk up towards Placa de la Constitucia to see the Town Hall of Mahón with the clock presented by the English Governor, Richard Kane.

Town Hall in Mahon in Menorca Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

In the square is a bar called Boinder, named after the Menorcan term for the overhanging bay windows which you’ll see in many of the older houses around town. They are a legacy of the English, along with sash windows, door latches and highly polished brass door knockers. I have quite a collection of door-knocker photos!

You may also enjoy my article:  Walking in Menorca – on the Cami de Cavalls

From here follow Carrer Isabel II which runs parallel to the port and look out for the narrow passages between the houses that lead to viewpoints over the port. There are three that I found, the final one being at the end of the street where you’ll reach the Museum of Menorca.

Harbour of Mahon in Menorca Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

10. The influence of the British on Mahon, Menorca

On the right hand side as you walk up Carrer Isabel II is the impressive Governor’s Residence. It was adopted by British Governor Richard Kane in 1722 when he moved the island’s capital from Ciutadella to Mahón.

Although Ciutadella had been the ancient capital of the island, Kane found it too inconvenient to travel back and forth from one end of the island to the other, since the English fleet was based in Mahon.

Governor's House in Mahon in Menorca Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

From the town hall, another interesting street to explore is Carrer de Sant Roc. Some of the oldest houses were owned by the noble families of Menorca, leading to the gateway of Sant Roc which was once part of the city wall.

The metal bands on the ground near the tower mark the line of where the city wall once stood. The gate overlooks a pleasant square, Plaça Bastio with café terraces and a children’s playground in the centre, so if you have children you’ll be able to sit with a drink and watch them play happily (at least that’s the theory).

11. Mahon shopping – A girl can never have too many shoes!

Once the shops open later in the afternoon, it could be time do some souvenir shopping along the main shopping street of Carrer Hannover. Menorca has become a centre of quality shoe production and as we know a girl can never have too many shoes!

The Avarca sandals that you’ll see in almost every shop were originally made with soles of old tyres. Now they are a high fashion item with many sparkly and colourful variations. Also look out for Pretty Ballerinas, a high fashion brand that is based on the island – their main shop is in the port area.

Stay at the boutique hotel Sindic Hotel – Adults Only in Mahon

12. Try the Mahón-Menorca cheese

You can’t go home without trying the traditional Mahón-Menorca cheese. It has a protected designation so can only be made with milk from the island.

The taste varies depending on how long the cheese has been matured. You’ll tell the artisan cheeses by the wrinkles made by the cloths in which they are wrapped.

Around town there are quite a few shops that will let you have a taste before you buy. One of the best is Autentic , a deli shop on Plaça de s’Esplanada. They offer a good range of cheese, sausages and other produce of Menorca such as honey and flavoured liqueurs.

Cheese in Mahon in Menorca Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

13. Try the Mahon gin at Xoriguer

At some point in the day you will want to taste some of the local gin which was another happy British introduction. In the past there were many distilleries on Menorca to keep the sailors satisfied, but now only Xoriguer remains.

They have several shops around town but a good place to try their gin is in the main distillery on the harbour front near the cruise terminal. Through the glass windows you can see the stills in operation. You are free to taste a range of the different gins and flavoured liqueurs that they produce and sell here.

Gin in Mahon in Menorca Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

The local way with gin is to mix it with fizzy lemonade to make a Pomada. It’s deceptively refreshing in the summer and served in vast quantities at all the fiestas in Menorca. You might want to try it as an aperitif in one of the bars once you’ve finished your shopping.

14. Dinner at Es Castell in Menorca

Of course there are plenty of places to eat in Mahón But for a change of scene why not take a 10 minute taxi ride to Es Castell where there are lots of restaurants around the pretty harbour of Cales Fonts.

Take some time to look around the town square which was once a parade ground, with the red painted military buildings. Then settle into a table at whichever restaurant takes your fancy.

If you don’t want to venture too far from the centre of Mahon, there are also plenty of excellent seafood and other restaurants as you wander along the harbour front.

15. Hotels in Mahon – stay at Artiem Capri

Having enjoyed the sunset and fresh seafood for dinner, you’ll return to your hotel in Mahón. I stayed at the very pleasant Hotel Artiem Capri close to Plaça de s’Esplanada and a 15 minute walk from the port.

My room was spacious and modern and there is a lovely rooftop pool. Sadly I was too busy sightseeing to try this out.

The hotel is part of the Artiem Hotel group which has many excellent hotels around the island. It includes the Hotel Artiem Audax in Cala Galdana where I also enjoyed staying. Explore and book other hotels in Mahón .

Wherever you stay I hope you have a perfectly restful end to your perfect day in Mahón!

What a narrow/ conventional view to give people of Mao ( the real name for the place!). You have not provided any kind of broad or comparative details of different types/ price ranges of the restaurants, hotels, or facilities you mentioned which no doubt gave you free food/board/entry!!!! . Your boring ‘ blog’ will appeal to a very ( thankfully!!! ) small segment of the tourist market who , going by the comments left..can’t see past the first shop or restaurant they see as they disembark their saga travel coach or Ford saloon car! My word, you have not given ANY detail of any credibility about music, wildlife, travel, history ( and I mean REAL history!, that you don’t just copy from wikipedia!) . What an awful blog. I am now inspired to begin a proper site for people wanting and needing REAL, AND PROPER DETAILS OF Mao! and not merely a blinkered view of what’s happening outside the tour bus!, Thanks for the motivation.

Is Port Mahon worth a visit?

Completely! The town of Port Mahon is well worth a visit. It has been the capital of Menorca since the 18th century. Today, it has a population of over 28,000.

Built on a 30m-high cliff, you’ll have a breathtaking view of the natural harbor of Port Mahon and the Illa del Rei, which bear witness to British occupation in the 18th century for over 70 years.

Parking – Where to park in Port Mahon?

Parkingin Port Mahon can quickly become an ordeal, as there are many small alleyways where you won’t be able to park. If there’s no dedicated parking at your accommodation, check the reviews and ask for details when you book. Parking can be tricky, with people passing through during the day or evening. Remember to check parking times, as parking is free during certain periods.

The main parking lots are:

  • Parking of la Explanada,
  • Parking of Freginal,
  • Parking of Port Mahon,
  • Parking Sa Sínia des Cuc.

Best time to visit Mahon

The best time to visit Port Mahon for sightseeing, adventure and the beach (a little way from the city center) is between April and May, then September and October, when the weather is warm but pleasant and bearable.

Note that the town is also very lively during the festivities closely linked to horses at the end of August/beginning of September for the world-famous Fiestas de Menorca. On the other hand, it will be very difficult to get around by car or cab in and around the town during these 3 days.

Port Mahon during the winter months is also an excellent idea. The city is much warmer than northern Europe and ideal for a quiet getaway.

Getting around the city

  • Most of Port Mahon’s streets are fairly narrow, and some enclosed parking lots charge a fee. So it’s best to walk around Port Mahon, even if the town is slightly hilly.
  • There are a number of public elevators that you can use to go down to the port and back up into town.
  • I opted for the walking tours, which allowed me to discover the city’s hidden treasures like this magnificent gateway, and to enjoy the shops and places of interest in its historic heart without the stress of parking.
  • You can also opt for a day trip by bus to Mahon and the surrounding area –  book your place

How long will it take to visit?

  • You can easily visit all the highlights of Port Mahon in one day.
  • If you want to explore Port Mahon in greater depth, you should spend at least 2 days here.
  • You can also consider Port Mahon as a base for exploring the rest of the island, close to the airport and the main Me-1 road running through Menorca.
  • See my itineraries for 1 day, 2 days, 3 days and 1 week below.

Practical tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes, as the pedestrian streets are old and narrow.
  • Port Mahon is somewhat hilly for walking. Be prepared to climb a few stairs or sloping lanes on your walk.
  • There are restaurants all over Port Mahon to please food lovers.
  • The Mercat des Peix or seafood market is closed on Sundays.
  • The Menorca Museum in Port Mahon is closed on Mondays.
  • Avoid staying in the city center if you’re looking for a beach vacation. They’re all within easy driving distance of Mahon.
  • Despite the large number of tourists, Port Mahon is a safe and secure town.

Where to eat in Port Mahon

In my opinion, a true travel experience also includes exploring the local cuisine. So a visit to Menorca would not be complete without sampling its local delicacies and enjoying a meal in one of its traditional restaurants. Omitting this step would be almost like going to Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower!

In Menorca’s capital, I loved all these places to eat (all family-friendly, by the way):

  • Restaurant Arjau in Port Mahon: combining bistronomy and seafood right on the harbor,
  • Mercat de Peix fish market in Port Mahon: seafood delights and fresh market produce,
  • Mercat de proximitat Sa Plaça market: tastings of local produce in a festive atmosphere,
  • Glacier Ambrosia in Port Mahon: authentic Italian ice cream in the heart of the capital.

Where to stay in Port Mahon

Best places to stay in port mahon.

Please note that my choices have guided this selection. Port Mahon offers a multitude of superb locations to suit all tastes!

Mahon’s capital is laid out a little like Ciutadella, built on a cliff with its port below. However, it is larger and more urbanized than Ciutadella. The main districts are:

  • the natural fishing and yachting harbor,
  • the historic heart,
  • the other side of Mahon S’Altra Banda.

Where to stay in Menorca?

I recommend staying either close to one of the 2 main towns, Ciutadella or Port Mahon, or in one of the charming little villages all over the island. You’ll enjoy good restaurants, typical markets and their picturesque atmosphere. For example, you could opt for:

  • Hotel Gran Melia Villa Le Blanc Hotel in Santo Tomas – View photos & availability
  • Hotel Catalonia Mirador des Port, overlooking the natural harbour of Mahon – View photos & availabilities
  • Hotel Smoix Hotel, in the old town of Ciutadella – View photos and availability

Hotel in Menorca

1 to 5 – Port Mahon’s main tourist area

The majority of tourist attractions are located in the same area in the heart of the old town. You can easily get there on foot.

1. Stroll through the narrow streets of the capital

As Menorca’s capital since the 18th century, Port Mahon boasts a rich heritage that can be seen in its various districts. Narrow streets, typical colorful houses, numerous shops and cobbled streets, discover the soul of this city as you stroll through its historic heart and natural harbor. Don’t forget to look around you and look up to admire the moldings, windows, old portals, colorful buildings and monuments!Wander through its narrow streets, stop off at the Church of Santa Maria de Mahon, then sit down at one of its typical bistros or artisanal ice-cream parlors.

Narrow streets of Port Mahon in Menorca

2. Recollection at Santa Maria de Mao Church

Built in the 13th century after the Muslim occupation, the Church of Santa Maria de Mao was originally built as a temple dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Nearly 140 years later, 2 chapels were added close to the city wall. The church was restored and enlarged in the 16th century, after being plundered in the course of the many conquests and occupations Minorca underwent. It’s a building I immediately noticed as I strolled through the old town, between the port and the typical narrow streets. Did you know that it was originally built on caves dug by private individuals? Today’s Baroque-style structure dates back to a major restoration completed at the end of the 18th century. Inside, you’ll find a magnificent organ dating back to 1810, meticulous fine moldings and beautiful frescoes and statues.

  • Open daily.
  • Admission €2 per person (except Sundays before mass).
  • Official website here .

3. Fresh fish and seafood at Mercat des Peix

The fish market, or “Mercat des Peix” in Catalan, is a Port Mahon institution. Here you can feel the spirit and personality of the town. Located near the port, I had an exquisite time! Seafood and shellfish, tapas, fresh fish, sandwiches, local beers and wines, all in a friendly atmosphere on the terrace or indoors, depending on seating availability. You can also take away before or after browsing the many gourmet stalls. Eating on the go, balanced and local, that’s the promise of this charming place where you can also do your shopping to taste the catch of the day. A word of advice if you want to be seated for lunch: go around midday to avoid the crowds. Closed on Sundays.

4. Explore la Illa del Rei

La Illa del Rei is a magnificent islet off the coast of the natural harbor of Mahon, the capital of Menorca. It got its name because it was the 1st land in the Balearic Islands where King Alfonso III landed in the 10th century at the time of the reconquest. This place, which I really loved, is a jewel of the island’s heritage, witness to several occupations: Muslim, Andalusian, English and French, which have followed one another over the centuries. In the 18th century, the island’s main naval building, the British Military Hospital, was built to house the soldiers of the English Navy. It can still be visited today, with many historical medical and military artifacts preserved. On the same islet, discover the remains of a 6th-century early Christian basilica and the Hauser & Wirth Art Gallery.

  • From mid-June to mid-September: open daily from 11am to 10pm.
  • Mid-September to late October: open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm.
  • Price: round-trip boat shuttle 7€ per adult, 3€ for children under 18 (free for children under 3). Tickets can be picked up directly at the port, but the round-trip price per adult is €10. Visits to the islet are free, but guided tours can be booked on site or online.

5. Contemplate the architecture of Mahon’s main theater

Did you know that Port Mahon’s main theater is the oldest opera house in Spain? It was designed in 1829 by Italian architect Giovanni Palagi. The building is quite original in that it is shaped like a horseshoe, a reference to the central place of horses on the island of Menorca. With a capacity of around 1,000 people, it’s a relatively modern building despite its age. It is a pivotal venue for the cultural life of Port Mahon, where shows, concerts and other instructive activities are organized.

  • Guided tours by appointment.
  • Price €3 per person, free for children under 12.

6. stroll around mahon’s natural harbour.

The natural harbor of Port Mahon, used for both fishing and water sports, is the largest in the Mediterranean and, even more remarkably, the deepest in the world. The inlet is over 5km long – impressive, isn’t it? It is made up of four islands: the Isla del Rei (King’s Island), the Isla del Lazareto (Lazaretto Island), the Isla Pinto (Pinto Island) and the Isla La Plana (La Plana Island). The Mercat des Peix, or fish market, is higher up, and you’ll also discover a number of troquets, music bars and more refined restaurants along the promenade. The port is also the departure point for visits to the Illa del Rei.

  • Discover the port of Mahon in a different way by opting for a cruise with underwater views !

7. Discover Minorcan produce at the Sa Plaça/ Mercat del Claustre local market

Adjacent to the Nostra Senyora del Carme Church, you’ll find the Sa Plaça / mercat del Claustre local market, with numerous shops set up in an enclosed gallery. As you make your way through the central courtyard, you’ll come across a number of stalls selling local produce from Menorca. Tables are set out in the center of this courtyard with its large arches, as well as a stage for lively musical evenings. This space is the former cloister of the convent church adjoining the market. Day or evening, the stalls are brimming with colorful, juicy fruit, sun-drenched fresh vegetables, charcuterie and local cheeses. While you’re there, be sure to try the famous hard cheese AOP de Mahon Menorca, a real melt-in-your-mouth delight!

8. A visit to the Sensacions de Menorca artisan soap store

Are you looking for original ideas for souvenirs to take back with you from Menorca, or do you simply love artisanal products? Come and visit the Sensacions de Menorca artisan soap store in the old town of Port Mahon. You’ll be enchanted by the multiple scents and originality of the products. Soap, cosmetics, bath products, organic and local oils, creams, shampoos… All natural, handmade and produced in Menorca. I particularly liked the soaps made from seawater and seaweed collected from various beaches on the island, a nice souvenir to keep in your bathroom!

  • Open Monday to Saturday, 9.30am to 8.30pm and Sunday, 9.30am to 1.30pm.
  • Official Facebook page here .

9. Enjoy an ice cream in the old town

Menorca’s Mediterranean climate can sometimes be hot, so a good gelato will be most welcome! During my stroll through the old town of Mahon, I made a detour to Ambrosia, one of the town’s best artisan ice-cream parlors, to enjoy an authentic Italian-style gelato. You’ll find Italian-style ice cream cones or pots with flavors as original as they are delicious! Lavender, citrus, violet, vanilla, pistachio… some refreshing, others more classic, but always delicious. Enjoy!

10. Visit the Church of Nostra Senyora del Carme

The Church of Nostra Senyora del Carme has been the object of much covetousness for the installation of a new religious order, particularly during the 18th century when it was built. Situated near the Mercat des Peix and adjacent to the Sa Plaça local market, this neoclassical church features discreet ornamentation. A large window in the vaulted nave lets the sun’s rays in, illuminating the interior of this former Carmelite convent. Today, the cloister is used by traders and visitors to the Sa Plaça local market.

11. Admire the character portals in the city’s alleyways

Strolling through the narrow streets of a city is one of my favorite ways to discover its hidden treasures. It’s a simple pleasure, but one I’ve always enjoyed. Turning down an up-and-coming alleyway, discovering a portal like this one is one of my little travel pleasures. And there are plenty of them in Menorca, especially in the capital but not only! I can spend several minutes taking in the fine detail of the mouldings on the door and window frames, as well as the contrasts between the colors of the facades and the materials used for the joinery. This house, for example, has real cachet and its walls tell a story.

13. Port Mahon lookouts

To get the best views of Mahon, I recommend a trip to one of the high lookouts. After a short walk, you’ll have the chance to take sublime photos of the town, its port and the opposite shore. Some suggestions for lookouts in Port Mahon:

  • Mirador Carreró of its lies,
  • Mirador Del Pont Des Castell,
  • the view from the Mercat del Claustre.

14 to 15 – Museums in Mahon

14. minorca museum in port mahon.

Housed in a 17th-century Baroque Franciscan convent, the Museum of Menorca in Port Mahon traces the island’s history through its heritage. Prehistoric and Talayotic cultures, Roman, Andalusian Muslim, British, French and Spanish conquests: every era is represented and illustrated.A fine permanent collection of paintings highlights the place of painters and the history of painting on Menorca, as well as the representation of the island by the artists who drew inspiration from it.Temporary exhibitions are sometimes planned on the first floor on a variety of themes. This is a fairly interactive museum, suitable for young and old alike.

  • Closed every Monday.

15. Minorca Military Museum in Es Castell

The Menorca Military Museum is an interesting place to visit in Es Castell, a small village in the east of the island near Port Mahon. Housed in the former barracks of Cala Corb, in the village’s main square, you won’t want to miss this imposing and intriguing red building. Built during the British occupation of Menorca in the 2nd half of the 18th century, it housed first the Academy and then the Artillery Regiment. Your visit will take you through 19 exhibition halls, each telling the story of the island from prehistory to the 20th century. Ancient cannons, engineering instruments, original plans of the La Mola Fortress, military defense structures, models of fortifications in Menorca… The tour is rich and varied with all these collectors’ items.

  • Free admission, museum closed in January and February.
  • Open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 2pm.

Best excursions from Port Mahon

Basing yourself in Port Mahon allows you to go on a variety of day trips. Choose a few to suit your tastes!

Visit the village of Es Castell

Es Castell is a charming little village of British origin founded in the 18th century, which I absolutely adored with its colorful buildings, squares and alleyways. It has a lively artisan day and night market in an off-the-beaten-path location known for its mills at the entrance. This village is a 15min drive from Port Mahon, home to the island’s Military Museum. Its welcoming, family atmosphere won me over. I enjoyed the picturesque buildings and alleyways, combined with the atmosphere of a bustling port town. It’s a really pleasant place to stroll around, with many restaurants and stores close to the marina, which faces Cala Llonga on the other shore and Illa del Rei to the west.

  • To discover this village in a different way, opt for the e-Bike tour from Punta Prima to Es Castell .

Discover the village of Alaior

The adorable little village of Alaior was founded in the early 14th century, just after the conquest of Menorca by Alfonso III of Aragon, King of Aragon, King of Valencia and Count of Barcelona. Today, this Menorcan municipality has a population of almost 10,000, which is quite large for an island locality (1 third of the respective populations of Port Mahon and Ciutadella). Did you know that since 1998, it has also been home to the University of the Balearic Islands in Menorca? This is one of my favorite villages on Menorca, particularly for its authenticity, with the Church of Santa Eulalia and the Civil War tunnels.

  • Line 1 bus links Port Mahon to Alaior in around 20 minutes.

Best beaches in Port Mahon

Port Mahon has no beaches in the immediate vicinity (see my article on the best beaches – coming soon). You’ll need a car to get there, between 15 and 25min drive depending on traffic. To visit Menorca’s best beaches, you’ll need to  rent a car.

If you stay in Port Mahon, you’ll have quick access to the surrounding beaches.

Cala Sa Mesquida Beach

On the northeastern tip of Menorca, Sa Mesquida is a small fishing village whose beach, surrounded by lush greenery, has been the scene of historic moments of conquest. Little known, the cove and beach are not always crowded. The turquoise water makes you want to dive into the waves! From the sand, you’ll enjoy views of the village and the Torre de Sa Mesquida defensive tower, a British legacy dating back to 1799.Bref, it’s a perfect place to relax and reconnect with nature, just a few minutes’ drive from the capital.

  • Supervised beach in season, only 15min drive from Port Mahon.
  • Discover this beach in a different way with a cruise including diving and swimming at Cala Sa Mesquida.

Binibeca Beach

The beach at Binibeca is one of the most beautiful in Menorca, with its fine sand and turquoise water and its catamarans and sailboats moored alongside. It’s located in the south-east of the island, close to the typical village of Binibèquer Vell. It’s a child-friendly beach, with shallow waters. You’ll even find a bin with games and reusable beach accessories (many beaches have them) to give these objects a 2nd life. It’s a perfect area for snorkeling and discovering Menorca’s marine flora and fauna. There are also a few shady spots.

  • Supervised beach 25min drive from Port Mahon, toilets on site.
  • For parking, prefer the street leading to the path leading down to the beach.
  • Bus 93 runs between Port Mahon and Binibeca, with regular routes every day (more info  here ).

Cala’n Porter Beach

Cala’n Porter is one of Menorca’s most important seaside resorts. It is attached to the municipality of the village of Alaior. In my opinion, it’s Menorca’s most beautiful cala (cove), with easy access to its fine sandy beach. It’s a place that can be quite crowded, as you’ll find a multitude of water sports, some quiet spots, access to several nature spots, an exceptional setting with clear turquoise water in the middle of cliffs that open up like 2 gigantic doors. The local people were also very welcoming, as is often the case in Menorca.

  • Supervised beach in season, deckchairs and parasols available for hire, 25min drive from Port Mahon.
  • Discover Menorca’s south coast by kayak , its cliffs and sea caves.
  • Read more in my article on Cala’n Porter – coming soon.

As I said before, if you want to visit Menorca’s most picturesque beaches, you’ll need to hire a car.The island’s beaches are scattered all around, which is pretty convenient because wherever you go, you’ll never be far from the beaches.

If you love hiking, picnicking and nature, you must add it to your bucket list near Port Mahon in the northeast of the island! The Balearic Islands are famous for their many trails and paths in the mountains, forests and near the sea. The Cami de Cavalls (or GR 223 path) is a famous hiking trail that crosses the whole island of Menorca. On foot, mountain bike or horseback, there are several stages where you can discover the island’s varied landscapes, fauna, flora and biodiversity, as well as its gastronomy and local know-how. Did you know that Menorca is a well-preserved island classified as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO ? The ancestral Cami de Cavalls trail, which means ” horse trail ” in Catalan, lets you explore this mythical Mediterranean jewel. Horse-related festivities

The Fiestas de Menorca are world-famous festivities featuring this majestic equine! The Menorcan horse is a very old breed with a black coat and slender stature. Horses are the stars of Menorca’s summer festivals, held in all the villages and the 2 main towns. Hundreds of horses and riders roam the town centers, and tens of thousands of people come to applaud and admire them! The atmosphere is warm and lively, and there are plenty of stalls where you can enjoy a glass of Pomada, the famous Menorcan cocktail with gin and lemon, Menorcan-style grilled meats or local produce. Authentic customs are also part of Menorca’s charm, and the island is still very much attached to them. Note that it’s best to walk around the towns and villages during these festivities.

  • Festivities from June to August from west to east, opening in Ciutadella and closing in Mahon at the beginning of September.

Sunset in Minorca

Why is Port Mahon famous?

The natural fishing and yachting harbor of Port Mahon is the largest in the Mediterranean and, above all, the deepest in the world. It is made up of 4 islands: Isla del Rei (King’s Island), Isla del Lazareto (Lazaretto Island), Isla Pinto (Pinto Island) and Isla La Plana (La Plana Island). The port is definitely a district to put on your list when you visit Port Mahon! In the 2nd century BC, the port of Mahon was already considered a strategic location under the Roman Empire. It was also here that the British army established its naval base under occupation in the 18th century.

About the city name

The history of the Port Mahon name is obviously closely linked to the various conquests and occupations over the centuries:

  • in the 3rd century BC,the Carthaginians, led by general Mahon, annexed Menorca to their kingdom and their general gave his name to the town he founded: Mahon.
  • 100 years later, this strategic town became Roman under the name of Portus Magonis.
  • After the Muslim conquest under the Caliphate of Cordoba in the 10th century, it lost its status as capital.
  • Under English occupation in the 18th century, Mahon once again became the main town and a naval and military base.

  • MarinaY1001 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great experience but get to the embarcation early Wonderful experience! We were expecting beautiful sceneries, but a crowded boat and bad food from some of the reviews we read. But we can only say positive things about our day. Super stable boat, amazing sceneries with a captain that brings you close to sites, great stops in amazing places, super good paela (but not enough at the first serving and no more for a second plate). But here is the tip - arrived very very early (at leats 45 minutes prior to departure time). we were second in the queue and had our choice of table/seat - we choose an upper deck table without sun. The people who arrived later/late were crowded downstairs or on the open front deck in the sun the whole day. Read more Written September 1, 2023
  • GaryInTheU 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Over crowded over priced. Too many people on board approx 200 plus, no where to sit and standing room only. Also very little shade as we started around the coastline. Our first stop was at a beach where there were so many people you could hardly find anywhere to put a towel also very dirty. Would not recommend this trip if you have any issues with walking as it moored on the rocks and no path. You can not get back onto the boat until the lunch has been cooked and is a very average paella and one drink only unless you pay for more. Read more Written July 20, 2023
  • alexandrut2015 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Overcrowded not recommended Totally agree with the reviews that state the whole thing is a ripoff. After a 2 hours trip with the bus, we got to see that an even bigger bus was already there before us. The boat was already crowded and we decided not to even go on the trip. We contacted them and no response was given. Instead i could have taken a small private boat, no license, and enjoy the clear waters of Menorca Read more Written June 9, 2023

  • JP10725 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles A waste of time Avoid at all costs. Only good thing about this trip is that they get you to visit remote beaches, that otherwise would be hard to reach without time/car. Everything else (everything that the boat provides) is a waste of money. The crew is rude, the paella is awful, and the boat is so overcrowded that it makes it impossible to have a comfortable journey. They basically use this service as a tourist trap, packing the medium sized boat with as many people as possible. Never again. Absolutely terrible service and food. Read more Written June 15, 2022
  • EricvandenHurk 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Worst trip ever "A rip-off" 120 pers. stuffed like cattle on a boat, 3 stops at beaches, last one was even too filthy to swim in. • Gogsystewart 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to visit some of the remote beaches. We've been on this excursion a couple of times now, both times we were landed at the beaches of Son Suara in the morning, and Cala Turqueta in the afternoon. Son Suara is a very remote long crescent of powder sand. Plenty of space for everyone that disembarks from the boat. Lunch of Paella followed with some sangira, then on to Cala Turqueta. This is a much smaller, but beautiful cove. It does get crowded with a boat load of 200, but you will still find space to lay your towels. I wouldn't want to spend every day of my holidays on a crowded Cala Turqueta, but the experience of visiting is not to be missed. The sea can get quite choppy, and if you're not used to saiing, best to stay downstairs in the centre of the boat to minimise the motions, and to be best protected from the sun. Next time we are in Menorca, we would probably go on this excursion again - it's a great way to fill a whole day. Read more Written June 10, 2020
  • Christine288 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles October in Menorca Menorca is lovely any time of year although we were a bit disappointed that some of the advertised facilities at our Hotel had closed for the season not too much of a problem though as we were only there for a few days. We stayed in Es Castell which is a great place although if you're looking for a beach holiday its probably not the place to go. We went to Mahon 40 - 45 minutes walk, maybe there is a shorter way as I remember the travel agent saying it was a short distance.all in all a lovely break, great hotel. • BrigidaZ2 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent tour if you want to see most of Menorca Great tour for the price. The guide we had was called Josep and not only he was very knowledgeable about the sites but history too and he had a great sense of humour too which always makes a great deal of difference. He was very good and made the excursion fun packed. He also was very aware of having an older group of people with us so very sensitive to everyone’s needs when preparing the walking tours. Loved his explanation of the meteo tsunami at Ciutadella harbour and also his recounting of the rivalry between Mahon and Ciutadella. He lives in Ciutadella so can show you the place as a native. The trip takes you to see Ciutadella, the Talayot temples but also the small bay of Forfells with its quanti streets and plenty of restaurants. You get enough time to stop there and have something to eat at one of these. Josep will tell you which one is best placed for your budget. I loved also being given time from him and the driver to make some pictures along the way as they would go slower or even stop the bus for a couple of minutes. Gracias Josep. • DarrenDeane 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boring, unnecessarily long and definitely Not worth the money! We booked the Island Tour, the guide spoke the whole time about irrelevant drivel. He even felt the need to mention a speed camera! Surely you’re scraping the barrel when that is considered a ‘highlight’. The guide only spoke to us directly when taking money, other than that ignored us completely. Destinations were dull except for one, we spend excessive amounts of time in each area. It took an hour and a quarter (from Cala Galdana) just picking people up before the day even started with no explanation as to what was happening. Feedback was taken really badly by the guide, he became defensive and refused to accept viewpoints of others even though they were shared with a third of the coach! It’s a sad indictment when almost half of the people on the tour are stood waiting for the coach to open because the locations have little to see! I wouldn’t recommend the trip with this company, we were bored for most of the day!! Read more Written October 4, 2019

Madonna Announces Historic Free Concert in Brazil as Final Celebration Tour Show

The Queen of Pop will play in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on May 4 at Copacabana Beach

Madonna  knows "the power of good-bye."

On Monday, the Queen of Pop, 65, announced that she will perform a historic free concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on May 4 at Copacabana Beach for her final  Celebration Tour show.

Sponsored by Itaú Apresenta, the concert "will be free of charge as a thank you to her fans for celebration more than four decades of her music over the course of the epic global run of the tour" and will be broadcast live on TV Globo, per a press release. The show will be her first in Brazil since 2012.

There are no tickets required for the event, which will take place in front of the Belmond Copacabana Palace Hotel, and entry will be available on a first-come first-serve basis.

Before heading to Brazil, Madonna is set to perform in Dallas before making stops in Houston, Atlanta, Austin and more. She will also take the stage in Miami for three nights in Miami at the Kaseya Center (April 6-9) and will play at Palacio De Los Deportes in Mexico City for five nights.

The Material Girl kicked off her  long-awaited Celebration Tour  at London's O2 Arena in October with an electrifying two-hour set where she opened up about her  road back to the stage after  her hospitalization last year  following a  serious bacterial infection .

"I didn't think I was gonna make it. Neither did my doctors. That's why I woke up with all of my children sitting around me," Madonna  said of her kids  Lourdes, 27, Rocco, 23, David, 18, Mercy, 18, and twins Stella and Estere, 11. "But the angels were protecting me, and my children were there. And my children always save me every time."

Earlier this month, she opened up about the toll the tour was taking on her.

"This show every night is not really so hard on me physically. It's hard on me emotionally because I'm really telling you the story of my life. My heart is on my sleeve," Madonna said. "I've fallen off a lot of horses and broken a lot of bones ... but nothing can stop me."

The "Ray of Light" artist referenced her health scare last summer, calling it a "near-death experience" and revealed that the "first word" she said was "No" when she woke up from an induced coma after four days.

"I'm pretty sure that was God saying to me, 'Do you want to come? Want to come up with me?  No ,'" Madonna continued, drawing laughs from the audience.

Later, she recalled a conversation she had with her longtime manager, Guy Oseary, while she was in the hospital.

"He said, 'Well, when do you think you want to go back on tour?' I took the oxygen out of my nose. I looked at him, and I said, 'in two f---ing months!" Madonna said. "I just said it. Sometimes you just have to say s--- [and] put it out in the universe. And it happens."

Sprinkler head relief helps Peter Malnati to Valspar Championship title

Change Text Size

Peter Malnati knew it was a fortunate break. He made the most of it.

Not long before winning the Valspar Championship at 12-under, two strokes clear of Cameron Young, Malnati looked to face a gnarly pitch on the par-4 16th at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course after tugging his approach left of the green. Malnati and Young were tied at the time; with Young facing a mid-range birdie look at 17, Young looked to have the advantage.

Malnati, though, drew good fortune in that a sprinkler head impeded his natural stance to play the shot. The nearest point of relief (within one club length, no closer to the hole) was in the fringe; Malnati called over Steve Rintoul, PGA TOUR Vice President, Rules and Officiating, who confirmed the free drop. (A sprinkler head is considered an immovable obstruction under Rule 16.1.)

The golf gods were in Malnati’s favor here, a reality that he didn’t dance around.

“I feel this is a great break, and I want you to be here … this is the right way to do it, isn’t it?” Malnati asked Rintoul in real time.

“That’s your nearest point,” Rintoul confirmed.

Suddenly a dicey chip became a fairly straightforward 45-foot putt from the fringe. Malnati lagged to 4 feet and saved par. He followed with a birdie on the 17th and a par on No. 18, good for a two-stroke win over Young, who finished par-bogey.

“You’ve got to take advantage of situations like this if you’re going to win for the first time in some nine years,” NBC broadcaster Dan Hicks remarked.

“This is beyond a good break,” analyst Notah Begay agreed. “Even if he had to drop in the first cut; now he’s on the fringe and can put the putter down and take advantage.”

Malnati did just that, earning his first win in eight-plus years, a trip to his first Masters, a spot in this year’s remaining Signature Events and full TOUR status through 2026.
