Lion Country Safari

Lion Country Safari opened in 1967, in rural Palm Beach County just west of West Palm Beach. At the time it was the first drive through safari park in the United States and introduced a new concept to animal lovers, The Cageless Zoo .  Lion Country Safari was originally developed by a group of South African and British entrepreneurs who wanted to bring the experience of an African game park, then and now an expensive and time-consuming trip, to South Florida families who would otherwise not be able to experience an African safari.

Florida, USA - September 19, 2019: Lion Country Safari drive through park in West Palm Beach Florida. Cars driving near giraffes in cage free animal zoo

mariakray/Shutterstock

Lion Country Safari

West Palm Beach

The first cageless drive-through safari in the country, this incredible animal park puts you in the cage (ie your car) as 900 creatures roam freely, staring at you . Equal parts conservation area and safari, the park's 500 acres are home to bison, zebra, white rhinos, chimpanzees and, of course, lions. You tour in your car (unless it's a convertible, in which case short-term rentals are available), driving slowly, hoping the animals approach the vehicle.

The best time to go is when it rains, because the animals are more active when it's cool. The park is 20 miles west of downtown West Palm.

2024 New Year's Day Monday, January 1st, 2024 1pm-4pm 4 adults, 1 child $267 We decided on Lion Country Safari to kick off our new years. Purchased our tickets online and received e-tickets via e-mail. Open 365 days per year including Christmas and New Year's Day. ***we took zero pictures or videos as we were determined to put all phones/tablets away and be fully engaged with one another and our little adventure*** ARRIVAL Drive up lanes/booths where they scan your QR/e-tickets, receive a map and drive through the safari. Windows up and locked the entire time. Radio channel that describes the animals as you drive pass them. (No animals came up to our vehicle this time but a zebra came up to someone else's and was doing something to their tire as everyone watched). DRIVE THROUGH SAFARI We absolutely love this little adventure and the fact the animals are free to roam (except lions) while we admire them. We saw zebras, rhinoceros, ostriches, giraffes, monkeysand more. PARKING/OTHER ATTRACTIONS We parked and went inside for the nature walk, petting zoo, water park, paddle boats, kiddie rides, mini golf, shows/demonstrations, animal encounters, food/snacks. (We ate before we went but while there we got a pretzel, slushy, popcorn, water; don't recall the cost). We got quarters (change provided inside the restaurant) for fish food dispenser for the fish, ducks, swans and other birds. We paid $5 (they accept credit cards) for a few large pieces of lettuce to hand feed giraffes which was fantastic. You walk up a short ramp to higher observation deck and they come right up and eat endless lettuce from everyone. They are so stunning up close. We truly loved this. The petting zoo was delightful as well and we also bought some food there to hand feed the goats (I think that was lettuce too). Most of them were friendly, one snipped at some child but nothing major and others were ramming one another playing. Super cool to engage in and observe their behavior. One made friends with us and wouldn't leave our group and if it did it came right back to hang out with our family pack, we named him Jeff. They have hand washing station which is recommended before and after. We purchased $3 tiny nectar juice and the birds would fly over, land on your shoulder and drink from it which we throughly enjoyed and spent some time at. Although one snipped at my son he said it wasn't a biggy that it was a baby and hungry. Even though the tiny nectar juice is small for $3, we fed plenty of birds and we're still able to hand it to another child who didn't have one to engage with the birds which made them so happy. All in all the day spent there was brilliant, everyone loved it, wanted to stay longer and engage more, the weather was fantastic, staff was friendly, animals were stunning, place was clean and organized. I can't think of a thing this place is lacking. CONS -I know there are summer passes which include this place and others like it in the tri-county area because we have got two before. But the summer is brutal to be outdoors so we are glad we went in January with cooler weather. Wish there was a Florida resident discount or any time of discount. -Bees; so many bees surrounding each and every garbage can (garbage can in parking lot and everyone inside), my brother got stung in his arm. He said it was no biggy but it was swollen and he kept a cool water bottle on it.

Came here with my family and it's worth the trip. You start off with the drive through where you are able to see the animals, learn about them and the conservation efforts. Then you can park and hit the park. My son loved the carousel, train ride, petting goats and feeding the giraffes. Highly recommend this place for families.

Took my family from out of state to Lion Country Safari and they had a BLAST!!!!!! She was shocked at the price we paid for 2 adults and 2 children but by the end of the day, it was deemed well worth it!

We had an amazing time!!!! My grandchildren absolutely loved it. It's clean and well organized. The rides are perfect for young children. The petting zoo was fun and the animals were well cared for. Unfortunately the giraffes were not hungry on this particular day. The other animals on the drive through were active and gave a nice show. The reason for four stars is that's it's pretty pricey. Go to one of the turnpike rest areas and grab coupons for $5 off per person. Bring your own food too. At least drinks. Enjoy!!!

What a great day to spend bring the family here. This is obviously catered more to families since they have a whole kid section but don't be discouraged because it's worth to be a kid for the day. Lots of animals to see while you're in the car but I definitely wanted to pet more animals . Goats are $2 dollars per and to feed the giraffes it's $5 dollars for 5 lettuce leafs. One day pass is about $50 dollars after tax . Highly suggest to go early, since you're following cars be mindful about that . I noticed around 1 they fed the animals and it was better to get closer photos and videos . Has a few places to sit down eat and grab a cold beverage to cool off . For the price this is worth it .

EXPENSIVE!!!!! How fo families afford this park that costs $50 per child and more for adults? Another greedy corporation. The park was nice but did not justify the $400 for three adults and one child

Photo of Erica E.

Awesome experience! It starts with a drive thru to see all of the animals. They have a wide variety of animals- zebra, gorillas, water buffalo, lions, etc. They have a splash pad, small slides and some rides for the kids to enjoy inside the park- after the drive thru. There are boat rides and paddle boat options. You can bring your own food and snacks. Plan to arrive early and spend all day here! This is great for young kids!

Zebras

Hadn't been here in yearssssss and apparently my son didn't remember going when he was younger. We decided to take a ride out. I was nervous because it was rainy but the lady at the entrance said this was the best time to go because it's cooler and the animals are more active. Admission fee has definitely went up since I used to go but no surprise there. As an attendant, she was very observant and saw I had a navy federal card that I was paying with. She asked if I was military I told her a family member was. She did give me the law enforcement discount though. I appreciated her being observant and working to get the guests discounts when she could just collect money and wave us through. Once inside it was awesome! Although rainy. The animals were very active! It was a great time. We did not check the inside area or adventure park due to the rain but it was worth it to drive through and see the animals. My only gripe was the audio guide.. I think it should be broken up into chapters so you can stay on track with what animals you are passing at the time. All in all, awesome time

Eight (now more affordable) things to do this summer in West Palm Beach and beyond

Summer activities in palm beach county include free concerts and up-close animal encounters..

In Palm Beach County, the days are getting hotter, students are out of school and tourists are staking out the perfect spot on local beaches.

Yes, summer is right around the corner, and so are the summer deals and events. For the adventurous, a single summer pass offers access to a safari, a zoo, a science museum and an alligator farm.

For film enthusiasts, all of the major theaters are offering family-friendly movies for as little as $1.50.

And for those who want relief from the heat, a local water park is hosting weekly events, while a Greenacres bowling alley and a West Palm Beach museum are offering affordable fun.

Here are eight ways to get out and about this summer:

Rapids Water Park announces summer parties, movies and ticket discounts

Rapids Water Park in Riviera Beach — voted one of the best outdoor water parks in the country two years ago — is hosting weekly events, along with a special offer on season passes that ends this month.

The water park, 6566 N. Military Trail, is throwing a foam party at the wave pool every Friday in June and July. The parties are from noon to 3 p.m. and include a live DJ.

The park is also planning "dive-in movies" every Monday in June and July, when families can enjoy a feature film while floating in the Big Surf Wave Pool or lounging on a beach chair. Keep an eye on the Rapids Water Park social media accounts and website, rapidswaterpark.com , for movie announcements and show times.

Both the foam parties and the movies are included with a general admission ticket, which range from about $50 to $60, or with a season pass that usually costs $129.95.

Season passes are on sale for $109.95 — or two monthly payments of $54.97.

Season passes also include unlimited visits, free parking in the regular lot, a 10% discount on food and merchandise, a 20% discount on cabana rentals and free admission to other parks throughout the country.

Cinemark, AMC and Regal theaters offer summer movies at deep discounts

Anyone can enjoy blockbuster movies in Palm Beach County for just $1.50 to $5 a ticket for both children and adults.

Cinemark is offering the $1.50 deal from June 19 through Aug. 10, during its Summer Movie Clubhouse promotion. The discounted movies — a lineup that includes "Sonic the Hedgehog," "Puss in Boots," and "Minions:The Rise of Gru" — will play on Wednesdays at 9:30 am.

Participating theaters include Cinemark Palace 20 in Boca Raton and Cinemark Boynton Beach 14. For more information, visit cinemark.com .

Regal is offering even more opportunities to catch a movie for just $2 a ticket on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m., now through Sept. 6. The lineup includes "How to Train Your Dragon," "Shrek Forever After", "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie," "Kung Fu Panda," "Curious George," and "Paw Patrol."

The movie showings vary by location, so contact your local Regal theater for more information about the Summer Movie Express promotion.

If those options don't work, AMC Theatres' Summer Movie Camp is offering tickets for $3 on Wednesdays and $5 on Saturdays from May 27 to Aug. 30. The lineup includes "Boss Baby," "The Secret Life of Pets" and "Trolls World Tour."

For tickets and a full schedule of showings, visit amctheatres.com .

Visit Lion Country Safari and Cox Science Center and Aquarium with just one ticket

A deal known as the Summer Savings Pass offers entry to four attractions, including two in Palm Beach County, for the entire summer.

The pass offers unlimited access to Lion Country Safari , the Cox Science Center and Aquarium in West Palm Beach, the Everglades Alligator Farm in Homestead, and Zoo Miami .

The Summer Savings Pass is good through Aug. 31 and costs $65.99 for adults and $55.99 for children between the ages of 3 and 12. That's compared with the regular price of $45 for just one adult admission to Lion Country Safari.

More information about the attractions and passes is available at summersavingspass.com .

Boca Raton's Summer in the City offers free concerts at the Mizner Park Amphitheater

Summer in the City is bringing free entertainment to Boca Raton almost every Friday through early August.

All shows start at 8 p.m. (except for the Movie Soundtracks performance) at Mizner Park Amphitheater, 590 Plaza Real in Boca Raton.

The lineup includes:

  • The Elvis Presley Experience with Matt Stone on June 2.
  • The Beach Buoys, a tribute to the Beach Boys on June 16.
  • Movie Soundtracks performed by The Symphonia Boca Raton and the FAU Summer Concert Ban,d with Kyle Prescott conducting, on June 30. The show starts at 7 p.m.
  • Best of Both Worlds, a tribute to Van Halen on July 7.
  • Purple Madness, a tribute to Prince on July 14.
  • We Are Yacht Rock, soft rock hits from the late 1970s through early 1980s on on July 21.
  • Neil Diamond tribute featuring Rob Garrett on July 28.

"Attendees are encouraged to walk, bike, carpool and use free parking at City Hall and the Boca Raton Library," the city announced. "Food and beverages will be available to purchase inside the venue.  All shows are rain or shine."

Free bowling for kids twice a day, every day

Kids Bowl Free partners with more than 1,500 bowling centers around the globe, including at least one in Palm Beach County.

As part of the summer program, Greenacres Bowl, 6126 Lake Worth Road, is offering two free games every day to kids between the ages of 2 to 15.

To learn more and sign up, visit kidsbowlfree.com and gatorbowling.com .

"This program is designed by bowling centers to give back to the community and provide a safe, secure, and fun way for kids to spend time this summer," Kids Bowl Free said on its website.

West Palm Beach museum offers $10 art workshops for families

The Norton Museum of Art, 1450 S. Dixie Highway, is the home of "Family Studio," a gallery experience and art workshop that costs only $10 for the whole family.

The program is for children between the ages of 5 to 12 and the grown-ups joining them. Each session is different, and the museum has programs scheduled for May 27, June 3, June 10 and June 24.

A description for the session in late June says families will "create your own book of memories using Polaroids, magazines, photocopies, text, and mixed media."

For more information, visit norton.org , and send an email to [email protected] to check availability.

Something for everyone at Mounts Botanical Garden this summer

Mounts Botanical Garden, 531 N. Military Trail in West Palm Beach, has dozens of classes and events scheduled throughout the summer.

In June, visitors can try their hand at watercolor painting, tai chi, photography, gardening, yoga and nature therapy, among other offerings.

Check out mounts.org for the full calendar of events and prices.

See a cougar or a capybara at the Palm Beach Zoo

The Palm Beach Zoo, 1301 Summit Blvd. in West Palm Beach, is home to hundreds of animals — many of them endangered.

Visitors can see alligators, capuchin monkeys, giant anteaters, jaguars, otters and ring-tailed lemurs at a cost of $27.75 for adults, $25.75 for seniors and $21.75 for children ages 3 to 12.

Guests can get even closer to a handful of animals by purchasing a separate experience on top of the general admission ticket. The zoo offers a meet-and-greet with its koalas, Ellin and Sydney, or with its otters, tigers, tortoises, capybaras, flamingos and sloths.
