We have four libraries on campus. The  Brotherton Library  houses our arts and languages collections. It's home to our Special Collections of rare and historic items.

The round reading room was modelled on the British Museum and features a magnificent domed roof. It's an impressive independent study space, but also offers group study areas and computer clusters. The West Building , beneath the round reading room, is a modern space with IT facilities.

The outside of the Great Hall seen from the main entrance

The Great Hall is a beautiful building which is used mostly for formal occasions including graduation ceremonies, and events such as the Leeds International Piano Competition .

Next to the Great Hall is Baines Wing where you’ll find the School of Healthcare . Baines Wing and the Great Hall are part of the original Yorkshire College of Science and are the reason we’re referred to as a ‘red brick' university.

Behind you is the Michael Sadler Building which houses Languages, History and Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures .

Sir William Henry Bragg Building

Pathway leading to the front of the Bragg Building

Named after a former professor who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1915, this new engineering and physical sciences teaching and research facility opened in 2021.

It contains some of the most advanced electron microscope technology in the UK for fabricating and investigating new materials.

It has been designed so that vibration from passing traffic does not interfere with ultra-sensitive laboratory instruments.

A green path winds through the sustainable garden in front of the Garstang North Building (School of Geography)

At the University of Leeds, we are committed to embedding sustainability in everything we do.

Our Sustainable Garden is a space on campus for students, staff and visitors to enjoy quiet contemplation. You can also help cultivate an edible garden by taking part in our weekly gardening sessions.

From here you’ll see the Faculty of Biological Sciences which is located in the LC Miall Building and the Faculty of Medicine and Health in the Worsley Building. You’re also within reach of the Faculty of Environment in the Priestly Building.

Roger Stevens Building

The Roger Stevens building has 25 traditional and digital lecture theatres.

Love it or hate it, the building is a great example of Brutalist architecture and is grade II listed. The flying bronze figure is one of the most striking sculptures on campus; the 'Spirit of Enterprise/Hermes' by William Chattaway.

The Roger Stevens pond is a Living Lab examining how refuges in urban areas can benefit biodiversity, and how urban emissions can affect water quality. Along with many species of plants and wildlife, the pond is home to our well-loved campus ducks.

Visiting Researchers in LIFD

LIFD Visiting Fellows

Our LIFD Visiting Fellows scheme aims to attract distinguished scholars from around the world to work with LIFD. Fellows are normally invited to spend between one and three months at the University of Leeds; longer stays may also be possible subject to funding. Fellows will have full library access and IT support, office space in one of our Schools and will be able to access suitable Laboratories and High Performance Computing to support their research. We expect Fellows to deliver an LIFD colloquia talk and we encourage visitors to proactively engage with our postgraduate students and wider LIFD research activity during their stay.

We invite applications for LIFD Visiting Fellows at three career stages:

  • Prize Fellows are finishing PhD students or early postdoctoral researchers. Prize fellowships are awarded to outstanding candidates to enable the translation of research into publishable material or the initiation of collaboration with members of LIFD.
  • Junior Fellows are early career researchers- experienced postdoctoral researchers or academic staff in their first permanent role as a lecturer/assistant professor;
  • Senior Fellows are established researchers, normally associate or full professors with a strong track record of independent research.

We also welcome applications from potential fellows in a research and development role in industry or other external organisation.

Applicants are required to submit a CV and complete a short application form indicating their planned research activity while visiting LIFD and the expected benefits and potential future collaboration following their visit. Applicants should also provide a letter of support from their academic host within LIFD. Fellows are offered assistance with expenses to a maximum of £3,000. Please send all queries and applications to [email protected]

  • For applicants wishing to visit between 1 st April 2024 and 31st July 2024, the deadline is 29th February 2024 and decisions will be made early March 2024.

LIFD Ukrainian mobility fund

There is an opportunity for the LIFD to support Ukrainian scholars and students affected by the war. Visiting academics, industrialists and students are an important part of the LIFD research and education strategies as they bring collaborations, funding and increased reputation.

The LIFD is therefore launching the Ukrainian mobility fund.

Visitors will have full library access and IT support, office space in one of our Schools and will be able to access suitable Laboratories and High Performance Computing to support their research.

The LIFD is therefore launching the Ukrainian mobility fund. This document  sets out the LIFD approaches for bringing researchers from Ukraine to the institute, and School/Faculty/University processes which need to be followed. The document also gives some information on costs and visa considerations.

If you have any questions, email [email protected]

Please share this opportunity with your international fluid dynamics community. More details are also available on the #ScienceForUkraine website.

Visiting Scholars

Our visiting scholars scheme is a flexible programme open to academics, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students from anywhere in the world. A visit can be from 2 weeks up to 12 months and we encourage applications from established and early career scholars. Our visiting scholars participate in our academic life as much as possible, for example, engaging in discussions or joint projects. We would normally expect visitors to present their research within LIFD or school seminar programmes.

All visiting scholar applications are made in conjunction with an appropriate academic host at the University of Leeds, and approval is given by their host school. Application normally requires a CV and completion of a visiting scholar form. However, this requirement may vary by School. Applicants who are PhD students may also need to provide evidence of English language ability.

Visiting scholars are unfunded positions, and visitors are expected to show that they have sufficient funds to cover their visit and the research they wish to carry out. This may be arranged in collaboration with your host at Leeds if appropriate.

International family and friends visits

Many international students invite family and friends to attend graduation or to visit the UK for holidays.

Your family or friends can find out if they need a visa to visit the UK by filling in this online questionnaire .

If they do need a Standard Visitor visa they must carefully read the guidance notes before applying.

Visitors aren't eligible for NHS health treatment, so they should arrange their own travel and health insurance before travelling.

Online application

Your family or friends must complete the  Standard Visitor visa application online .

Your visitor will need to show UK Visas & Immigration that they:

  •     want to visit the UK for six months or less
  •     intend to leave the UK at the end of their visit
  •     have enough money to support themselves
  •     do not intend to work in the UK.

There is no specific list of documents they must show to get this visa, however we suggest you submit the following supporting documents:

1. Purpose of visit

You need to send your visitor (family or friends coming to your graduation) a copy of:

  • your passport details page
  • the visa page in your passport or a copy of your Biometric Residence Permit.

2. Student registration status certificate

You'll also need to send a Student Registration Status Certificate from the University, which confirms you are a full time registered student. Choose the option for ‘travel visa’ and confirm whether the document is for you or someone else.

3. Graduation invitation

If you're inviting your visitor for your graduation ceremony you should request a Student Registration Status Certificate and choose the option for ‘graduation invitation’. This letter includes details of your ceremony. You can also submit a copy of your confirmation email you receive when you book your graduation.

4. Financial support

Your visitor needs to prove that they have sufficient money available to cover the full cost of the trip including flights, accommodation and living costs. There are strict rules about what financial evidence is acceptable, so always read the guidance.

There is no specific amount of money that you or they must hold, but we suggest you use the Student visa requirements as a guide.

If you're financially supporting your visitor you'll need to send an original bank statement, to demonstrate your funds. Speak to your bank about obtaining an original bank statement.

5. Accommodation

If your visitor is staying with you then you must send your accommodation contract/tenancy agreement to show you have room for them. If they're staying in a hotel then you can submit a hotel booking, or they can book their own hotel or show that they have funds to do so.

6. Intention to leave

Your visitor will need to show they will leave the UK at the end of their visit. Documents which could be provided include; a letter from their employer, school or university, return flight tickets, evidence of property ownership or marriage certificate. (Certified translations of such documents will be required.)

7. Invitation letter

To help your visitor to get a visa you can write them an invitation letter and provide them with some supporting documents. Send these by post to your family or friends and they can submit them with their visa application. Each person you invite will need their own original letter and documents from you.

You can copy out the invitation letter template below. You will need to change it to reflect your personal situation.
