Shoei J-Cruise II Helmet & Sena SRL2 Modular BT System Review
New for 2020
It seems spring is here, although most of us are hunkered down somewhere coping with the COVID-19 Pandemic. And while many of us are probably not getting in a whole lot of riding…there are exceptions and overall, where allowed, getting out for a ride is still a good thing.
And if you can’t go riding or work on your machines, you can spend constructive time online…looking for new stuff to read, such as this updated review of the Shoei J-Cruise II & Sena SRL2 Modular BT System that was first published 3 March 2020; enjoy.
Introduction
Rick reviewed the original Shoei J-Cruise helmet in May 2013…and now we have the new for 2020 J-Cruise II offering, a helmet that has gone through some significant changes from the original version. The J-Cruise II remains a compact, aerodynamic offering but features even more innovative design and technology enhancements.
Virtually all the helmets personally owned or provided for testing and review over the recent decades have been full-face or modular flip-style although two open or three-quarter style helmets – the original Arai SZ-R (now the SZ-R VAS or RAM-X) and a Bell MAG-9 found a home on the helmet shelf some years ago.
Returning to the present, it is a fact that even more of the (many) open face helmets on the market today have lots in common regarding design, build, features and quality with full-face helmets – not a bad thing when you think of it…
Rick stated in the original J-Cruise review that, “it’s basically a full-face helmet in an open-face shell…you give up the protection of a chin bar but there really aren’t any other compromises to be made.” That statement, almost seven years old, seems even more applicable regarding new generation open face helmets.
After my spouse picked up a Medium LS2 VERSO Mobile , the subject of a wBW review, I decided to keep refining the open face shopping list and by late fall two more Intermediate to Long Oval head-shaped helmets in size Large were added to the short list.
With Shoei announcing their 2020 products including the new J-Cruise II, one of the helmets on my short list, the bid was made to get one in White, Large. Once arranged, some sidebar coordination with the Sena rep resulted in the (new) Sena SRL2 for Shoei helmets being provided…and sometime later the white flaky stuff started falling and piling up!
Shoei J-Cruise II Overview
In going back to an earlier paragraph, the Shoe J-Cruise II is indeed designed and built to a very high standard . It features a composite fiberglass shell, multi-part multi-density EPS liner, integrated smoothly functioning sun visor, and comfortable conforming supportive head insert and cheek pads.
Feature Summary (Compilation):
- Three quarter or Jet-style helmet with fiberglass composite shell
- Aerodynamic Enhancements – new spoiler and sleeker air intakes, Shoe claims a (significant) 43 percent decrease in side-to-side movement at higher speeds, a seven percent decrease in ‘lift’, and a slight reduction in overall drag
- Quieter – largely due to improved aerodynamics; less turbulence/drag = reduced noise while the updated interior liner keeps sound away from the user’s ears
- Better Ventilation – air intake is increased by 30 percent while the wide narrow rear exhaust vent moves 20 percent more air out of the helmet
- Main Face Shield – anti-scratch CJ-2 better seal against the shell, works to reduce intrusive wind noise (see quieter), new ‘slightly up’ or first position for better ventilation and defogging at low speeds and, Pinlock Evo compatibility (lens included)
- Internal Sun Shield – redesigned with new features, QSV-2 sun shield is 5mm or 0.2in longer than original QSV-1, deployment/retraction slider has distinctive easy to feel raised location housing, is larger and closer to the left side of the main shield, distortion-free, removes 99 percent of UV rays and, the visor can be ‘locked’ down
- Closure – new, stainless steel micro ratchet-closure chinstrap, allowing easy use of the chinstrap with gloves on (can be easier than double D-Ring design), a single D-Ring is retained for dismounted security
- Customizable – cheek pads designed to allow best fit/personalization (see Interior Section), with various sized/tailorable headliner pieces available and removable for cleaning
- BT Communications – both the Sena SRL and SRL2 modular kits fit and are specifically designed to work with the helmet providing all the well-known standard Sena features
- Colorways – five solid colors available – Black, White, Matte Black, Anthracite Metallic and Matte Blue Metallic, pricing is the same for all colors.
Helmet Box Contents:
The industry standard Shoei helmet box contained the J-Cruise II Large in White, housed in the standard SHOEI helmet bag, a plastic Service Tool, small bottle of silicone oil, two manuals – How to Use Your Helmet Properly and J-Cruise II User Manual (both multi-language) and two SHOEI decals.
Consumers have five (solid) color choices for the Shoei J-Cruise II helmet:
- Anthracite Metallic, Matte Blue Metallic, Matte Black, Black, and White.
Exterior – Design, Build, & Finish
The Advanced Integrated Matrix (AIM) shell is formed of multiple high-quality composites and organized fiber layers; the combination provides excellent outer shell shock resistance with optimum rigidity. A characteristic or advantage of this composite form is reduced weight.
Four outer shell sizes are used – XS-SM, MD, LG, and XL-2XL , for perfect helmet range fitment and overall, a more compact piece.
An updated face shield (visor) mechanism (QRSA), along with a change of the window beading provides a better fit and better seal. The internal sun visor mechanism is improved and accommodated without sacrificing the thickness of the multi-part multi-density EPS inner shell with space provided by raising the forehead area of the outer shell a needed amount.
With continued use, I have gained even more appreciation for the updated face shield with its excellent coverage, the great eye port seal and a simple to use face shield mechanism, along with the smooth-running sun visor; everything works.
Paint & Finish
Finish of the outer shell itself is outstanding with the gloss White and thick clear coat providing a great first impression. Only one very small bluish blemish is seen on the right side; otherwise it’s perfect. Despite a few bumps over the review period, the gloss White is still looking as good as it did some months ago – it is one durable finish.
Not so perfect is the alignment of the back Shoei J-Cruise II decal and the DOT stickers is crooked – QC missed these. Relative to how great everything else is, this isn’t.
Helmet Shape
For the North American market, Shoei uses an intermediate oval shape that fits a large percentage of the population and in trying on other Shoei models that also use this shape, I was confident that the J-Cruise II would be a good fit and, it is.
Investing in the best helmet possible is just one of those things that need doing. And we are so well served regarding consumer demographics that it is pretty safe to say that no matter what your ‘best fit’ is, there is or should be something on the market to fit, in any style and virtually any price range as well (see my first comment above).
Summary: Excellent. Less one little blemish, everything else regarding design, build, and overall finish is great and the longer the helmet is used, the more I come to appreciate how it all looks and works.
It isn’t unusual to see molded plastic or silicone trim parts on helmets, although most are not meant to be removed unless a limited replacement of minor parts is needed (where helmet shell or integrity is not involved).
The J-Cruise II has some of these pieces, three to be exact – the left and right lower covers and a back center plate . These three become the ‘removed’ pieces to make room for the Sena SRL2 BT components.
Initial Rating – Excellent. Updated information, assessment, and overall rating data will be provided in the follow-up.
The center pad or headlining is a lightweight and comfortable 3D Max-Dry antibacterial and moisture-wicking material. The piece is easily removed for washing or replacement.
Removing the headliner for regular cleaning is indeed simple and one that doesn’t seem to add stress to any of the pieces. Regular inspection, cleaning and replacing of components is critical in maintaining the functionality of the helmet and the $$ investment.
For those who may have specific head fitment issues, Shoei offers an experimental service – the Personal Fitting System (PFS) , by appointment only at their California HQ. The objective of this service is to not address helmet size, but rather to enable fine-tuning regarding overall helmet fitment.
This article produced by Motorcycle.com sheds more light on the PFS.
Removable ear pad pieces formed of a shaped brushed material section with foam rounds attached (shell side) for the speaker recesses are installed forming part of the overall noise reduction strategy, particularly for around the ears. If speakers are to be installed the earpad pieces are simply removed.
Some documentation for the helmet identifies that these covers can still be used even after speakers are installed. But I see two issues here: (a) the speaker foam rounds themselves would severely restrict audio in covering the speakers and, (b) clearance for the ears could be an issue.
In acknowledging that some users may indeed want to retain the light brushed material covering between the speakers and their ears, the fact is that the foam rounds are plastic-backed and glued/stitched to the softer brushed material section – not exactly reusable.
A more user-friendly solution might be to use separate foam rounds for the EPS recesses, removed when speakers are not installed and make the larger earpad cover material sections reusable or add this layer as a drop-down on the headliner or foldable section on the cheek pad cover.
Clearance between the SRL2 speakers and the ears is just about right for great audio with some airflow clearance. As such, the provided spacers were not needed, and I have not added any thin liner material over the speakers as discussed above.
And speaking of cheek pads, they are well-shaped, well-padded, supportive and comfortable. They are also easily removed for access (like installing a BT system), cleaning or replacement.
Again, some posted media references the fact that the thickness of the provided pieces can be customized through delayering… hard to believe as these cheek pads are covered and stitched…
But complete cheek pads are available in different thicknesses so that users can get the absolute best fit.
Longer-term use of the helmet is resulting in an even better fitting more comfortable interior with the conforming headliner doing an excellent job of coping with my head shape that, as identified in the Sena Momentum EVO review, sits between an intermediate and long oval…
Summary: Excellent. Well laid out and fitted between all the pieces – everything sits in place providing a welcoming encompassing fit and feel for the head. Housing of and placement for the Sena SRL2 speakers is about as perfect as one could want, at least for my listening posts.
Helmet Weight
The original Shoei J-Cruise in Large weighed in at 1610gr or 56.8oz (3.5lbs) about the same as many full-face helmets of the time. In seeing posted media weights between 1250 to 1350gr for the J-Cruise II it seemed the new model carried less weight than the original.
However, the Shoei J-Cruise II helmet provided for this review, on the Pelouze scales, came in at 1600gr or 56.4oz (3.5lbs), virtually the same as the original model. Another observation is that there is no sticker outside or inside with a weight listing – information provided with many new helmets today, including those carrying ECE certification information.
With the Sena SRL2 BT kit installed an increase of 96gr or 3.3oz is noted resulting in a final weight of 1696gr or 59.8oz (3.7lbs). Comparatively, the new Shoei J-Cruise II is on par with the original, but seemingly (subject to further open face data analysis) still a bit on the hefty side.
Time and use hasn’t resulted in the J-Cruise II losing weight…but it has validated the assessment that the helmet is well-balanced on the head and, that it doesn’t become a burden on the head, neck and shoulders after hours of riding.
Summary: Excellent. You might ask how a helmet that is indeed ‘heavy’ in relation to many other three-quarter style helmets gets this rating; simple – because it carries its weight so well and has not yet become a burden that must be borne.
Fit & Comfort
With a 59-60cm (Large) intermediate to long oval-shaped head, Arai has been my helmet and fit of choice for decades; and in trying on earlier rounder profile Shoei helmets I just couldn’t (literally) get my head wrapped comfortably inside them.
So, I was pleasantly surprised that in first trying on the J-Cruise II with its intermediate oval shape and then wearing it for a couple of days around the house and garage, and after the first short early winter ride, the initial impressions were all positive.
In having gone through a great many helmets over the years, some skepticism over the good vibes regarding initial Shoei J-Cruise II use remained; that was then, this is now, and the early skepticism is gone.
Fit of any helmet, no matter what it is used for is critical – proper fit provides optimal protection (as designed) with a balanced helmet distributing weight more evenly around the head, neck, and shoulders – another factor needing consideration.
The only observation so far is that the lower front shaping of the shell and liner is an appreciated encompassing feature but one that also tends to make putting the helmet on and taking it off a bit more difficult than experienced with the other short-listed helmets.
Summary: Outstanding. Given heads and personalities, this is truly as subjective as objective, but I now know that full and appreciated use of a Shoei helmet is possible for this motorcyclist. Which just makes me want to try more of them…
Ventilation & Noise Levels
Ventilation.
The front intake consists of three vertical intakes (vice two on the original J-Cruise helmet) and Shoei claims overall air intake is up by 30 percent – a big increase. A unique feature allows each intake segment to be adjusted separately; Open = back; Halfway = mid; and, Closed = forward.
Opening any or all, of the three front top intakes can increase noise levels depending on cockpit and ambient environments, so the ability to adjust each frontal intake is a great feature, something always appreciated with my Arai helmets.
Vouching for the functionality and versatility of the three top intake pieces is easy; the approach works in spades to manage airflow, left, centre and right or all together. It is indeed over-engineered, but it works when facing cold, cool or warm temperatures – ‘hot’ isn’t on the radar screen, yet.
Internally, the J-Cruise II has four distinctive EPS inner shell air channels that provide maximum movement of air into, around and through the helmet for continuous air movement that can, of course, be modulated thanks to the three separately adjustable front intakes.
Shoei states that exhaust efficiency is also improved by 20 percent which is bound to make things better overall and the single-wide low-profile exhaust looks more than up to the job of handling the increased outflow – further use in warmer temperatures should tell the tale.
Air flow into, through and out the J-Cruise II helmet is very good related to the top intakes and rear exhaust for over and around the head air flow. And with three quarter helmets open when it comes to the lower area, coverage provided by the face shield and helmet aerodynamics is critical in considering protection, ventilation and noise.
Noise Levels
In not having used the original J-Cruise helmet my initial impression is that the J-Cruise II is a quiet helmet. Airflow and air pressure can be felt and heard against the face shield but much of it is positively redirected to the sides and bottom; wind tunnel testing pays dividends…
Some air does flow in under the bottom of the face shield, but it adds very little to the overall noise environment and does not put a chill on things. During these initial rides on the BMW F850GSA with its smallish windscreen (low position) ambient air temperature was 2C or 35F (wind chill not calculated).
A lot of air has flowed on to, around, over, and under the helmet since these initial statements were made. Overall, the J-Cruise II is indeed a quiet helmet, relative to its style and openness of course; design, build, and air management are obviously important aspects with Shoei.
Moving off with the face shield up or partially up is the (expected) noisy-with-rushing-air experience, but with the face shield down, there is minimal air pressure and lots of frontal protection even though the bottom of the helmet is still open to all intents.
Relative here is that the deep wide curved aerodynamic face shield functions like an insulating window when closed. Airflow is deflected while pressure is minimized, and noise levels drop significantly; and, virtually nothing in the way of roiled or disturbing air is felt along the bottom edges; its good, very good.
I have full face and modular helmets that are noisier on the outside and especially on the inside compared to the J-Cruise II, at least when used on the F850GSA Rallye (small short shield) and F850GSA Exclusive (larger wider shield). And one short ride on an un-faired motorcycle revealed how aerodynamic and quiet the J-Cruise II is overall.
Summary: Very Good to Excellent. It seems (in not having worn the original J-Cruise) that Shoei has been very diligent in providing excellent aerodynamics to address ventilation (high and low) while creating a truly quiet interior.
Face Shield & Sun Visor
Face shield.
The updated CJ-2 Face Shield System is 10mm longer than the original J-Cruise face shield and provides additional frontal wind and debris coverage. This 10mm increase comes distributed as an additional 5mm at the top and the bottom.
Also new is a slight up or ‘first position’ setting, serving as the initial release détente to provide extra airflow for cooling and defogging, appreciated when traveling at low speeds.
Even before the Pinlock insert (see below) got installed, coverage and functionality of the face shield had been well validated, especially the first position or unlocked setting that really does work for added ventilating/cooling/defogging airflow, at speed or creeping along in cool damp weather where fogging could have been an issue.
In use the heavier edged outward turned edge along the bottom of the face shield works extremely well, providing strength to minimize flex while functioning as an effective spoiler to deflect air pressure sideways, minimize turbulence and, reduce noise levels along the front of the helmet.
The edge seal is changed from a double-lipped shape to an airtight-sealed window style – this change is claimed to offer superior performance and durability and, a watertight seal along the top and sides of the helmet. In the event a better seal is needed, a light application of the provided silicone oil along the window seal beading can help.
Although the unexpected lifting of the face shield due to speed or wind gusts hasn’t been a major issue with other open face helmets worn, the potential issues and consequences are acknowledged; Shoei addresses things with a détente stop for the unlocked or slightly up position and a full shield stopper lock when it’s fully closed.
This left-side shield stopper (latch) features a small indent on the inner side of the shield that engages with a small tab on the lower plastic edge molding of the helmet; it takes a positive push outwards to disengage the lock and push the shield; simple, effective, totally functional.
With the shield stopper lock used for higher speed riding conditions, for most other riding conditions and with some frontal windscreen protection the face shield sits securely in the slightly up or unlocked position détente.
The CJ-2 face shield is Pinlock ready, but is not included in the kit. It is available from the Shoei Store (Pinlock evo, for Shoei CJ-2/CJ-2SP, PN DKS 105) and one was subsequently provided by the Shoei rep; thank you.
With the face shield removed and cleaned on both sides, everything is laid out on a lint-free surface. Using the included instructions as a guide it was a five-minute exercise to check layout, fit the lens, make sure it was fully seated/sealed and then replace the newly enhanced face shield back on the helmet – done.
Functionally, the Pinlock insert keeps the (primary) upper 60 percent of the face shield now completely fog-free, even in damp cool weather or when the wet stuff is falling; the difference in effectiveness is visually evident in being able to easily fog up the lower part of the face shield from the inside…the top Pinlock sealed section stays clear.
Shoei’s highly rated Quick Release Self Adjusting or QRSA mechanism makes easy work of removing or installing the CJ-2 face shield. The manual identifies three ‘hooks’ or engagement tabs that should be visually identified before first attempting to remove or install the shield.
To remove: support the helmet; open the face shield fully; pull the spring-loaded finger-tip-friendly spring-loaded trigger lever down and with a gentle wiggle, disengage the three ‘hooks’ or tabs; and, lift the respective side of the shield away. Repeat for the other side.
To install: support the helmet, lay the shield over the helmet in the fully open position, pull down on the trigger mechanism, align and push the three hooks or tabs into their spots, with the shield engaged, release the lever and check for proper engagement and movement.
A new Sun Visor (identified as the QSV-2 vice the original QSV-1) adds 5mm of coverage for better overall sun blockage or shade. Many sun visors are too short or too long – this one is just right for my face, providing clearance between the nose/cheeks and the visor; a factor to assess when trying on helmets with internal visors…
The sun visor lever or slider control sits on the left side just behind the face shield mechanism; low profile but easily reached. The slider itself is very positive in its action, taking little effort to lower or raise the sun visor.
It is, when needed, also removable. With the sun visor lowered, lift both small left and right recessed levers between the shell and the inner liner on both sides; once activated a distinct click is heard and the sun visor is locked down, facilitating access for removal/replacement.
Like the face shield, no distortion is noted when using the sun visor and its fog-free coating seems to work well. The sun visor insert piece is tested to DIN EN 1836 standard (link) and meets ANSI Z80.3-2010 standards for non-prescription eyeglasses.
Vision Assessment
The face shield with Pinlock and the sun visor work extremely well under all weather conditions – great coverage, solid feel, easy to adjust, and no flexing whatsoever. Aerodynamics of the face shield keeps a lot of oncoming moisture cleared and angling left or right also works with some airflow.
The sun visor covers the top 40 percent (approximated) of the face shield for encompassing glare mitigation, all without intruding on the nose or cheeks – great clearance; the left side slider control is easy to find and easy to use.
Summary: Outstanding. For a three-quarter helmet, the Shoei J-Cruise II has frontal coverage protection that (almost) equals some lesser full-face helmets – cockpit environments considered of course. In cold weather, air flow can indeed be felt along the lower edge of the face shield and bottom of the helmet, but not much – the full coverage aerodynamic face shield and precise fitting neck roll work together very (very) well.
Other Observations
Chin Strap/Fastener – for the new J-Cruise II, Shoei moved from the double D-Ring solution to a unique micro-ratchet type chinstrap that is claimed to be (and is) adjustable even wearing thick gloves. When the ratchet is down or locked it is a very strong and secure fastening. To release the strap, lift the Red buckle lever up and the lock opens.
Helmet Standards – the helmet provided for this review is DOT (FMVSS No. 218) Certified. Globally the helmet has ECE 22.05 certification and other standards required for specific markets.
Face Shield & Sun Visor – both the shield and sun visor are claimed to block 99% of harmful rays. The CJ-2 face shield exceeds Z87.1 / VESC-8. The sun visor is tested to DIN EN 1836 standard and meets ANSI Z80.3-2010 standards for non-prescription eyeglasses.

The Quick Start Guide provided gives you sequenced visuals for installing the kit in two helmet types – Flip Up and Full Face, with the downloadable Users Guide providing both text and diagrams for increased detail.
References & Tools Used
The Sena SRL2 Quick Start Guide or full Users Guide (PDF), Shoei J-Cruise II Manual (PDF), the Shoei Service Tool – found tucked inside the J-Cruise II manual (a small flat-edge screwdriver with protective tape over its edge works to protect plastic pieces as well) and, a camera.
Basic SRL2 Installation Steps
1. Remove the left/right lower side black plastic covers – push the center tabs in towards the helmet and use the tool to leverage the cover-up and away (snap-fit, guide-slot pieces)
2. Remove the back center cover – push the tab firmly in towards the helmet and once disengaged, work the cover-up from the front and back (a center insert fits against the helmet shell) and remove the cavity foam
3. Pull the fitted earpads from the speaker recesses
4. Remove the headliner and cheek pads from their snap fasteners and lower edge inserts; mark, note or take pictures of things as needed for reassembly
5. Optional – face shield removal, per the J-Cruise II Manual, done to (a) see how it worked and (b) get it out of the way while working (minimize component stress and scratches)
6. Remove the SRL2 headset from its plastic holder and with the helmet in a work rest, lay the headset out at the back of the helmet – pieces are etched ‘L’ and ‘R’ to facilitate things
7. Align the (arrowhead-shaped) keyed boom microphone connector to its counterpart on the right speaker housing and gently push them together
8. Insert the right speaker and then the microphone into the respective grooves – tabs on the boom align to the grooves for a foolproof (and correct) fitment
9. Align and slide the right plastic piece (the antenna housing) into the corresponding grooves and snap the piece firmly into place
10. Align and slide the left plastic piece (the control module) into the corresponding grooves and snap the piece firmly into place
11. Route and carefully tuck the wiring along with the left and right plastic (insert) clips into place between the external and internal shell layers
12. Install the cheek pad pieces, starting at back, or front and once seated, click the two-per-side snap fasteners into place, check the wiring is not pulled/strained and tucked away
13. Harness wires on each side can be tucked out of sight between the soft silicone lower trim and bottom of helmet
14. Replace the face shield and make sure it is fully seated and functional
15. Admire handiwork, set-up SRL2 BT system (see below) and go riding…
Bottom line here – all the installation steps got completed without issue. Total time required was about 60 minutes.
Initial Configuration & Use of the SRL2 BT System
The Sena SRL2 BT system is based on the standard Sena architecture and firmware. The three-button control module is easy to use (heavy gloves use might be more difficult) and functions well detailed in the packaged and downloadable Sena SRL2 User Guide . As such, only some initial steps information is provided here – encouragement to ‘read the manual’…
Battery charging – if not done previously, access the small silicone cover on the back module, connect the micro-USB cable to an applicable charging point and wait for the Red (charging) of the small LED to go Blue (charged).
Turning system On or Off – press the front (+) and middle controls simultaneously, “Preparing Headset” and the ascending tone sequence, then “Hello”. Repeat the button sequence to turn the headset off – “Goodbye” and the descending tone sequence is heard.
Device pairing – turn the SRL2 on, press the middle button for 12 seconds until high-tone double beeps and “Configuration Menu” is heard. Within two (2) seconds, tap the (+) button until the LED goes Red/Blue, multiple beeps will be heard and “Phone pairing”. Find the SRL2 listing on the device’s BT pairing list and initiate pairing, once paired “Your headset is paired” is heard.
Sena Smartphone App – there are lots of Sena Apps listed for both iOS and Android devices, but the (newer) Sena Utility App (current v2.5) is the listed and recommended general-purpose App to use with multiple settings and functions (shown below).
Summary: Outstanding. The Shoei/Sena collaboration results in what is an outstanding example of near-invisible integration blending style, form and function; other riders typically don’t even notice that a BT headset is installed…until the right-side mounted microphone is spotted.
All the initial positive observations about the new for 2020 Shoei J-Cruise II helmet are now well-validated based on continued use in both warm and cool climes.
Styling, aerodynamics, coverage, and comfort are standouts for this helmet and in use, its often hard to tell that this is a three-quarter helmet not a full face or modular; its coverage and functionality is that good.
Between helmet features and coverage and with a good high collar cool weather riding jacket worn, in many cockpit environments, coverage is almost complete regarding undesired chilling air sneaking in from the bottom unless the face shield is set to its first détente.
Helmet and BT system integration – where the desire for a custom design feature often leads to compromises and less than ideal results, the Shoei/Sena collaboration is a stylish seamless blending of form, fit and function; the whole system, less the low profile and very functional control module buttons is absorbed into the lines of the helmet; mission accomplished.
Bottom Line: First use of the new for 2020 Shoei J-Cruise II was positive and with this update its all still positive; no errors and lots of runs for a high score. I’ve been searching for ‘the’ three-quarter helmet solution for some time – this helmet ends the search. The Shoei J-Cruise II with integrated Sena BT headset is an outstanding helmet and is highly recommended.

Shoei J-Cruise II Review
The Shoei J-Cruise II is the updated version of the J-Cruise helmet. The helmet has a particularly unique design and comes with advanced tech found in Shoe’s modular and full-face helmets.
You’ll find a better field of view because of the wider visor, which also protects you from the sun. Also, it allows you to fit the Sena SRL2 BT kit, which is almost invisible when installed, offering you great communication. If you need deeper insights, you can check the complete Shoei J-Cruise 2 review below.
Outer shell and design
Fastening method, ventilation.
You’ll find the AIM shell construction tech in Shoei’s J-Cruise II. The AIM construction comprises organic and glass fiber offering a flexible, strong yet lightweight structure. The Shoei J-Cruise II is an open-face helmet with the benefits of a full-face helmet.
J-Cruise II comes with four shell sizes: MD, LG, XS-SM, XL-2XL, and weighs around 3.76 lbs. So, it’ll fit almost every head size and is lightweight too. When it comes to the color options, you’re going to get black, matte black, white, anthracite, and blue. So, there are a lot of good options available.
The fact that the helmet is Snell M2020D approved and DOT certified talks for itself. Both these standards mean a lot when it comes to helmet safety. So, when you buy a J-Cruise II, you can expect supreme safety.
Inner lining
When it comes to lining, Shoei J-Cruise II completely justifies the premium price. The J-Cruise II comes with an easily removable skull cap and cheek pads. Also, you’ll find press studs used for positioning and hidden tabs that allow a clean and snug fit around the neck.
Every lining material is a blend of silky fabric, fleece, and waffle weave. The silky fabric helps reduce friction, the fleece offers comfort and warmth, and the waffle-weave helps in better cooling and airflow. Also, the bottom of the check pad comes with a vinyl finishing which keeps the water at bay while driving in the rain.
And if that’s not enough, J-Cruise II has a sheathed strap with removable fleece. So, you can wash it whenever you feel like it. However, you won’t find any quick-release cheek pads as it’s easy to open an open-face helmet. Based on Shoei J-Cruise 2 reviews given by customers, the lining offers decent comfort and protection to the user.
The J-Cruise II comes with a micro ratchet fastener that offers five adjustment positions. You can adjust it further using the standard slide on your chin strap. Now, how can you beat that? You can easily lift the release tab for releasing the strap. It’s quite similar to releasing the seat belt in an aircraft.
When compared to the Double D-ring method, this method takes a bit more adjustment. However, once you adjust it, you can easily do the fastening even while wearing those winter gloves. Also, if you wish you wear balaclavas or buffs, there are enough adjustments available.
The CJ – 2 visor offers three detents:
- Fully closed
- Four-fifths closed
With a J-Cruise II, you’ll get pin-lock mounts for CJ-2 Pinlock Evo Insert. However, you need to purchase it separately. Also, there’s an inner sun-visor (QSV-2) which is retractable and protects you from the halo effect. So, you can expect decent protection from the sun.
The J-Cruise II features water and windproof visor seal. It’s definitely better than the previous variant, as Shoei has redesigned the visor seal in this variant.
You may think, why would an open-face helmet require ventilation. But it’s quite important. It’s because when you lock the full-face visor, very little air enters the helmet.
However, you’ll find ample ventilation with this helmet. Three top vents offer a 3-position slide action: close, open, and midpoint. These vents work pretty well in coordination with the exhaust vent found on the back.
Sometimes, you may find a quick mist buildup on cold mornings. However, a pin-lock insert will help you deal with it easily.
For an open face variant, J-Cruise II is surprisingly quiet. What’s the reason? Well, it’s because of the chin spoiler and compound curves. So, if you keep the visor down, you won’t experience unnecessarily loud noises.
In case you partially or completely adjust the visor, there’ll be quite a lot of noise, obviously. However, if you consider my advice, wearing earplugs while driving will solve this problem. So, in terms of noise, you can rely on this helmet.
One of the most striking features of J-Cruise II is its ability to fit the SRL Bluetooth intercom system by Sena. So, you can stay connected with fellow riders or maybe your wife on the go. However, you’ll have to purchase the Bluetooth communication system separately.
Shoei has never disappointed us when it comes to helmets. And Cruise II is enough to prove that fact. It offers everything a bike rider needs, whether you’re on a small route or a large one. From safety, comfort, and quality to communication, Shoei J-Cruise II comes with it all.
And this is everything you can expect from a good helmet. So, if you’re looking for a premium helmet that protects you from impact, sun, and air and is equipped with the latest tech, you must opt for Shoei J-Cruise II. I hope this Shoei J-Cruise II helmet review was informative enough to help you make the right choice.
- The sun visor offers decent protection from the sun and also allows enough space for you to wear goggles
- The helmet offers great ventilation which makes it good for sunny days
- Some users find the helmet quite heavy and bulky
- The helmet is not as safe as a full-face helmet.

Open-face Helmet with Innovative Sun Visor and Condensation of all Performances
Glaring sunlight in the morning and the evening and reflecting light from road surface or car disturb vision, hurt rider's eyes and cause fatigue. J-Cruise is equipped with smoke colored open/close type "QSV-1 Sun Visor" with minimum, distortion. It protects vision from strong sunlight and can be opened or closed easily by handling of lever against a change of weather or sudden change of lightness in a tunnel. It is an innovative open-face helmet in which a vision can be adjusted easily corresponding to conditions without having 2 shields of clear and smoke in touring.

Main Characteristics
QSV-1 Sun Visor
Equipped with Inner Visor which can be Opened or Closed Instantly Corresponding to Strong Sunlight or Tunnel Immediately
High precision injection molded visor made of polycarbonate conforming to EN-1836 and ANSI Z80.3, European and U.S. standards for sunglasses. Many of requirements such as strength, identification of signal colors and distortion are satisfied.
Vision while Sun Visor is used Superior vision is secured by proper light decrease and contrast. It works best against sunlight in the morning and/or evening, strong sunlight in summer or reflecting light. Hard coated on both sides with anti-fog performance. It is tough against fogging and scratch with minimum distortion. *The photo is illustrative purpose only.
Lever can be easily handled with gloved hand. It prevents unexpected sudden drop of sun visor in shaking during a ride.
CJ-2 Shield
Equipped with newly developed shield restraining distortion and roll-in wind.
"CJ-2 Shield" was newly developed as a result of pursuit of curvature with minimum distortion and reflection. A shield surface which is extended downward compared with CJ-1 realizes very natural and clearer vision by enhancement of optical performance with different curvatures and thicknesses partially in outer and inner sides. An unique design of a bottom end of a shield which is a key of J-Cruise's shape is designed to restrain rolling-in of a riding wind from the bottom.
Scene of Experiment in SHOEI's Wind Tunnel.
CJ-2 made of polycarbonate cuts UV by more than 99%. An optional PINLOCK® EVO lens which prevents fogging of a shield effectively may be equipped.
Double Action Opening/Closing System realizing Enhanced Close Contact with Shell
Same as a shield, a shield base is also newly developed. Variable axis double action mechanism is adopted to an open-face type also. When a shield is closed, "down & press" presses a shield to window beading closely. And also, double lipped window beading improved close contact further. Comfort and quietness are realized in a really high level by restraining invasion of riding wind, rainwater.
A window beading is in a double lip shape and avoids invasion of rainwater and wind by enhanced close contact with a shield.
A shield lock mechanism is equipped in the left side of the bottom end of a shield to prevent an unexpected opening of a shield. Handling is simple and firm. A shield is locked when fully closed asn can be opened when left bottom is pressed slightly.
Shield positions are 2, fully open and fully closed, for easy handling. When a shield is closed, it is pressed to a window beading by a spring.
PINLOCK® EVO lens (option)
Fogging is prevented while raining or cold, pinlock® evo lens for open-face.
PINLOCK® EVO lens which prevents fogging of a shield is newly adopted to an open-face helmet. PINLOCK® EVO lens for CJ-2 covers up to top end of a shield to avoid fogging of top end of a shield which disturbs vision during a ride. Furthermore, it is extended downward by about 8mm compared with a sheet for full-face to cover a larger vision of an open-face.

3D Full Support Inner IV
Fabricof interiors is a hybrid of high humidity absorption, quick drying and raised fiber of comfortable texture.
All interiors are removable. Inner is adopted 3D Full Support Inner IV with high holding and comfortable fitting. Surface material of interior consists of high performance of humidity absorption, quick drying and raised fiber of comfortable texture. To wear glasses easily, soft polyurethane is adopted upper of cheek pad. In additionally it is narrowed space between cheek and interior, therefore saving uncomfortable noise to inside.
Polyurethane foam for an area of temple of glasses is changed to soft type to make wearing easy.
An ear pad equipped around the ear is removable to secure a space in the area. A punching structure of a base portion avoids an echo of noise even after the pad is removed.
Pursuit of Aerodynamics which may Contribute to Reduction of Wind Noise
A vortex generator which forms an edge line in front of a sun visor lever restrains wind noise caused by the lever.
Designs for aerodynamics are applied to J-Cruise such as aero-spoiler integrated to a shell and a shape of a shield. All of these were designed through verification by wind tunnel experiment. A load to a rider during a ride is minimized and uncomfortable wind noise is restrained.
Pursuit of Smoothness and Aerodynamics
Firm safety and smart shape.
Firm safety by an appropriate impact absorption performance was secured without sacrificing essential performance and safety which might have been caused by enlarging a shell and influence to an impact absorption liner caused by equipping a sun visor. On the other hand, pursuit of aerodynamics realized a smart shape. Combination of these 2 factors is a big characteristic of J-Cruise. A stable riding safety without shaking of a helmet contributes to safety, comfort and reduction of fatigue in a high speed range. The longer you ride in distance and time, the more you may experience these performances.
Micro Ratchet Type Chinstrap
Removing and fixing can be made by one touch. an original locking system makes 2 claws work always for safety.
SHOEI's original micro ratchet buckle which makes removing and fixing of chinstrap by one touch is adopted. Fine adjustment of a ratchet is easy. 2 claws work always while locked. Stainless steel ratchet is adopted for safety and durability. Lock is not released unless lever of buckle is raised over a certain extent.
SHOEI's own Locking System where claws work always.
Lock is not released unless lever of buckle is raised over a certain extent.
Ventilation System
A component in a rear portion of an upper air intake performs ventilation of sun visor housing.
Simple and High Performance Ventilation, Easy Opening and Closing
Ventilation system is essential in a current helmet. It is composed, in J-Cruise, of an upper air intake in a sliding cover type for easy opening and closing and rear outlet. Shapes and positions were adjusted based on data of wind tunnel experiment to realize a high performance ventilation which can be experienced even in a low speed restraining wind noise.

Shoei J Cruise II Review

An overdue update to Shoei’s 2013 J-Cruise, the J-Cruise II marries all that we loved from the original with seven years worth of tech innovation.
As with the original Cruise model, the missing chin bar puts this jet-style 3/4 helmet in a sort of functional “no-man’s land” — it has a full face feel without the added protection. It may even seem impractical to some riders, imperfect as both an open face and a full face helmet.
Once you start to break down the quality Shoei put into this helmet, you start to understand that it is not just for scooter riders. Sure, the jet helmet is not built for sports bikes, but daily urban riders can find exceptional value in its premium comfort and unique fashion.

Shape and materials
The J-Cruise II fits most riders with its intermediate oval shape, slightly longer back to front and narrower down the sides. Available in four outer shell sizes (XS-SM, MD, LG, XL-2XL), the helmet fits well, but its deeper cavity may require a size up.
A carryover from the original J-Cruise, the Advanced Integrated Matrix (AIM) design of the shell features high-quality composites blended with organic and glass fibers, giving it strength and flexibility.
The shell design also helps with the reduced weight, which comes in at just over 3.8 lbs in a large. This is about ¼ lb heavier than the original model, a minor deviation that is offset by a balanced, stress-reducing shell.
A notable change in the newer model is the sportier, aerodynamic design, a natural result of design and compatibility enhancements. Extra vent intakes add function to a slick look while the rear spoiler reportedly reduces lift and drag. This spoiler, in truth, is also one of three key additions to a comm integration for Shoei’s proprietary Sena SRL2 Bluetooth system.
The J-Cruise II is available in five colors — black, matte black, white, matte blue metallic and anthracite metallic.
Things I liked
- Lightweight yet durable AIM outer shell.
- Superior removable and replaceable interior comfort features.
- Enhanced air intakes.
- Longer face shield and aerodynamic features deflect air and reduce noise.
Things I don’t like
- Poor compatibility with some comm systems.
- Impractical for some riders.
Overall comfort
The interior components are about as comfy as can be, all removable to wash and swap out to customize your fit. Cheek pads are well-designed and supportive, with easy-on/easy-off studs to detach and swap out if you need a better fit or an audio attachment.
In general, the helmet can offer a snug yet unrestricting fit for just about any rider.
The center headlining is constructed of lightweight, antibacterial and moisture-wicking 3D MaxDry material in an open weave to promote airflow and added cooling. Meanwhile, the conforming cheek pads and neckroll use soft fleece for warmth and plush comfort. These are covered on the exterior with a sealed vinyl material, making it feel sturdier and keeping water from being absorbed into the helmet if you get caught in the rain.
The chin strap moves from a double-D ring fastener to a ratchet strap, which some find easier for removal, especially with gloves. This strap is outfitted with a removable, washable fleece cover that adds a nice layer of comfort.
Audio takes a new course with the J-Cruise II, with the overall design being built specifically for Sena’s SRL2 BT comm system, similar to the Neotec 2 and GT Air 2. The back spoiler can house the battery, while removable plastic cheek sections on the exterior can be swapped out to fit common pieces. This creates a seamless look, free of awkward, exposed audio components.
The Sena setup is definitely a premium, versatile system to match a premium helmet. However, you may already have a system you like and want to carry it over to the J-Cruise II. If that’s the case, you may have some trouble installing it on the new helmet.
Adding in another system may require adjustments on where you place the unit on the side, though a sticky mount will likely solve the problem in any case. Thankfully, there are no worries on the speaker placement for the SRL2 or any other aftermarket set. Cutouts hidden behind soft interior padding allow for speakers and wires to be tucked out of sight.
The visor improves what was already fairly solid visibility from the first series.
A slightly longer shield provides additional wind protection, which is further enhanced by the smart edge design. Its weightier bottom edge offers not only better durability but also helps reduce buffeting at speed. This pairs with an improved airtight seal design to prevent moisture and wind from entering where it does not belong.
With many visors, face shield lifting from wind gusts at higher speeds is a potential concern. Shoei did a great job with the detente stops in the J-Cruise II, giving it three secure positions that are both tight-to-lock and easy-to-adjust.
The three positions are full up, full down or the new “slightly up” state. The latter position, also called first position, is especially helpful for defogging the visor and ventilating. The tight hold allows you to cruise at low speeds perfectly fine in the unlocked first position without worrying about rattling or a flapping shield.
In terms of switching visor positions, a simple positive push release makes it easy to toggle between fully closed and first position.
Swapping out shields is easy with Shoei’s Quick Release Self Adjusting mechanism. Levers on either side release the visor, allowing you to quickly change into different clear and tinted options.
It is worth noting that Shoei does not include Pinlocks with the CJ-2 face shield that comes with the J-Cruise II. If you are upgrading from the original model, the same insert will work. But with the antifogging functions in the new locking positions, you may not even need this addition. If you ride in colder climates, however, the insert is nice for demisting with a locked down shield.
Finally, the J-Cruise II still features the drop-down sun visor, albeit with a few design changes. With 5mm added to the length, slight adjustment to the nose cut-out and smaller cavity, the J-Cruise II is a bump in comfort, function and noise-reduction. The visor can also easily be swapped out so you can choose between smoke and yellow options.
For a ¾ helmet, the J-Cruise II is an impressively quiet option. Much of this is due to the face shield design and the comfortable fit of the interior padding.
The one major limitation on noise-reduction is the open chin that lets air inside. Fortunately, the wide curve of the longer face shield helps divert airflow, while the new upper seal further keeps air out.
Of course, with an open or slightly open shield, you are going to let in more air and subsequently more noise. Interestingly, the noise is fairly tolerable in that slightly open position, especially since you will likely be using that for urban riding when you need to keep it fog-free.
Ventilation
There are some new ventilation additions and enhancements that may seem redundant on an open face helmet. But with the J-Cruise II shield boasting such a quality outer seal both top and bottom, you will be thankful for the added airflow on hot days.
Three top intake vents pair with a rear passive vent to provide strong air flow when it gets hot and stuffy.
The two side vents are one of two ventilation upgrades from the original J-Cruise, adding 30 percent to the helmet’s intake, according to the manufacturer. The rear exhaust also enjoyed a 20 percent increase in airflow to keep up.
With three different open positions — open, half-open, closed — the intake vents provide versatility for controlling the climate on hot or cold days. Being able to independently adjust each vent also helps manage noise levels.
The second enhancement, the four slightly deeper EPS channels, is a little more subtle but an improvement nonetheless. Paired with the extra top intakes, the airflow on the interior goes a long way toward keeping cool with a closed face shield.
For all its design adjustments, a chinless open face just does not seem as fully protective as a full face helmet. That being said, from a relative standpoint, those design features that contributed to comfort and noise reduction also help the rider stay safer than most ¾ models.
The J-Cruise II is DOT and ECE certified, but it has not undergone the Snell or Sharp ratings. From where we stand though, Shoei always prioritized safety. For an open face design, this gets about as close to full face protection as you can get.
The J-Cruise II is a pricier model, and its position between a full face and open face design may be off-putting if you have your preference. But if you value comfort, temperature control and Shoei’s reputation for quality, this is a great choice for everyday riding.

Shoei J-Cruise II review: the open face that thinks it’s a full face helmet.
Page Contents
Shoei J-Cruise II review: expensive but quality open face helmet.
Shoei’s J-Cruise helmet has been around for a few years now and has built a reputation as being a high quality open face helmet, but kind of like an open face that thinks it’s a full face.
That’s because Shoei designed it to offer pretty well all the functionality of a full face helmet , just without the chin bar.
The original J-Cruise was very well received with hardly any areas of weakness reported. So now it’s on with that difficult follow up: to try and replace the J-Cruise with a helmet that’s even better than the original.
So, Shoei’s taken that first helmet and tried to make the J-Cruise II that bit better in what seems to be more or less every area. They say it’s slightly lighter, better venting, has improved aero, a better sealing main visor and a slightly deeper sun visor.
But then they all say something along those lines whenever a helmet’s launched.
So, here’s what the Shoei J-Cruise II is actually like – taken from the comments and opinions of riders around the web who actually own one.
- Fibreglass composite AIM Shell
- Four shell sizes (that’s lots)
- Drop down sun visor
- Integrated bluetooth : SRL/SRL2
- Pinlock ready visor ( Pinlock not included)
- Micrometric fastener
- Sizes XS-XXL
- Expect to pay £430-£540

Overall/Summary
If you look at our overall star rating of the Shoei J-Cruise II at the bottom of the page, you’ll find it hasn’t scored amazingly high. That’s probably because one of the factors we rate helmets on is value for money – and by anyone’s measure, the J-Cruise II isn’t the best value around.
And because it’s an open face helmet , it’s going to drop points on the safety rating too.
Having said that, with it’s AIM shell that usually scores well in SHARP safety tests and a good rating for noise attenuation (for an open face helmet at any rate) it’s still one of the highest scores we’ve given a helmet without a chin bar. Which is saying something.
That’s because, if money’s no object and you want an open face helmet, then the Shoei J-Cruise II is a cracking helmet. It’s superbly constructed. It uses Shoei’s tried and tested shell tech. And that double visor system’s excellent – although it really should come with a Pinlock antifog included at this price.
And owner after owner that we came across loves their J-Cruise II.
Overall then, if you’re looking for a high quality open face helmet that acts as if it were a full face in terms of comfort, aero and features, then you needn’t look any further than the Shoei J-Cruise. It’s really very good.
(more about helmet safety)
As usual when looking at safety with an open face helmet, we’ve gotta start off by saying something along the lines of ‘it won’t be that protective… there’s no chin bar so if you come off, things could get messy.’
There, think that about covers it. It’s an open face so don’t expect it to stop your chin/face/nose taking a battering if you have an off.
If you really need the freedom of an open face helmet but want something that’ll protect you as well, then how about checking out one of these modular helmets rated as top for safety instead?
Nope? OK, open face it is then.
In that case, the J-Cruise looks to be about as protective as you’re gonna get from an open face helmet. Not only do the sides come down nice and low to give you some protection lower down around your chin, but Shoei’s AIM shell uses the same helmet tech that’s used in some of their full face helmets.
It’s not their most technologically advanced shell construction – that’s their AIM+ shells. But it is a solid helmet shell material, evidenced by other AIM helmets scoring pretty well when SHARP tests them.
For example, the retro Shoei Glamster’s got an AIM shell and that scored 4 stars out of 5 when tested by SHARP. Same with the Ex Zero and Neotech II – both AIM shells and both 4 star rated.
So, given that every AIM shelled Shoei scored a four star rating (apart from the original GT Air that scored three) we’d have to say that, were SHARP to test the shell of the J-Cruise II (which they won’t because it’s not got a chin bar) then I guess it probably would score 4 stars.
Of course, it’s not just the shell that’s at work here. It’s also that shock absorbing liner underneath. And in the case of the J-Cruise II, it’s multi denisity liner as found on most of their range nowadays. So that should do the job nicely.
It’s also great to see that it’s manufactured in four different shell sizes . That’s just what you want to see with a premium priced helmet like the J-Cruise 2 and means the helmet you buy should be well optimised for fit, size and safety.
So that means there’s one shell size each covering fitment sizes XS-S, M, L and XL-XXL.
Other than the helmet shell, you get optically correct visor and sun visor, there to reduce distortion and the sun visor to prevent dazzling on sunny days.
And the main visor’s Pinlock-ready (Pinlock not included unfortunately) so fitting a Pinlock should pretty well prevent visor fogging (see visor section below).
The J-Cruise II also uses a metal micrometric fastener ; which are particularly easy to use – just always ensure the strap adjustor’s tightened up from time to time so your helmet doesn’t have the chance to come loose.
All in all then, the J-Cruise II does a good job of making a protective helmet; just not anywhere near as protective as a full face or the safest modulars .
Helmet Noise
(more about helmet noise).
OK, so the J-Cruise II is an open face that thinks it’s a full face. But open face helmets are always noisy helmets right, what with all that large area to let wind rattle around and noise creep in?
Thing is, that doesn’t seem to be the case with the J-Cruise II.
It’s fair to say that Shoei has made quite a bit of effort with the aero of the J-Cruise II, wind tunnel sculpting it to reduce drag and hence noise. They’ve also pushed some ear pads inside and made the visor fit tighter, slightly re-shaping it to divert the air. All of which should reduce noise when you’re riding.
I also suspect many J-Cruise owners’ expectations are pretty low in terms of noise suppression. I mean, you buy an open face helmet so you’re expecting it to be a bit windy and noisy, right?
But having said that, noise perception is always going to be just that… perception. It’s what you think that matters. And in the case of the J-Cruise II the vast majority of owners we found say they’re more than happy with the noise levels on the move, and that it’s super quiet for an open face helmet.
Of course, you need to ensure you get the fitment right in the first place. With the J-Cruise II that means you need to have a medium oval shaped head – and if you’re between sizes, make sure you buy the size up as we’ve heard from owners who found their helmets to be too tight when they were on the cusp.
But provided you get the size that fits and you’ve the right shaped head, then it seems like the J-Cruise II is one of the quietest open face helmets out there.
In comparison to the quietest helmets overall (including full face helmets), it probably ranks around average. But that’s very quiet for an open face and a great performance by Shoei’s engineers.
Ventilation
(more about helmet ventilation).
Ventilation is one of the key areas Shoei has worked on with the J-Cruise II.
You’d have thought that because it’s an open face helmet, you’d get pretty much all the ventilation you need without really trying.
Couple that with the fact that the old J-Cruise helmet was highly rated for ventilation anyhow, even with just that single vent up top.
But Shoei hasn’t rested on their laurels. They’ve reworked the helmet shell to make it more compact and with better aero properties and have stuck 3 big vents on the top just to make sure a ton of air gets through.
Shoei reckons everything’s somewhere around 20-30% improved from the old helmet in terms of ventilation. Which is nice.
What’s not quite so great apparently, is that the corresponding rear air vent is actually just a couple of small holes, thereby apparently restricting the air flow a little overall, according to one owner.
Still, most owners agree that the head venting on the J-Cruise II is great and lets plenty of air in and over your head just when you want it.
And if things get colder, those three vents are all 3-way adjustable with a half-open and closed position too, all operated with big glove-friendly sliders.
(more about visors)
The main visor on the J-Cruise 2 is massive, giving you a great view of the road ahead, your clocks and pretty well all around you, even when the visor’s down.
It’s an optically correct visor too, which is useful with the visor being so large. And it’s quick change too, so you can pull it off quickly simply by opening the visor then pushing a lever either side and pulling it free.
Just like the old J-Cruise helmet, it uses a super low tech peg and hole lock to keep the visor closed. Even though it’s a system that’s as old as the hills (and probably older!), it seems like it works just fine because we didn’t find anyone complaining about it online. Job done.
A couple of useful links…
– All our Shoei helmets reviews – – Open face helmet reviews –
Surprisingly for an open face helmet, lots of owners reckoned they can have a problem with fogging. I guess that’s what happens when you make such a large and well sealed visor on a helmet – even if it’s an open face.
That shouldn’t be a particular problem on the J-Cruise II as Shoei has made the visor Pinlock ready. Bizarrely, they haven’t included a Pinlock insert free in the box (like they do on this £100 MT Rapide for example!) which is taking the piss a little on such an expensive lid.
Still, at least there is the option for a Pinlock available I guess.
Making a Pinlock Evo available for the J-Cruise II is arguably tacit admittance that it is prone to some fogging. So too is the addition of a cracked-open city riding position for the visor – usually there to let more air in and help with defogging.
Then again, stick any piece of cold polycarbonate in front of your face on a cold or humid day and it’s probably going to fog up, so it’s good to know Shoei’s taken steps to address it.
What also good to know is that Shoei says their polycarb visor cuts out 99% of UV rays. Polycarbonate’s known for cutting out at least 95% anyway, but it’s always good to see an exact figure, especially if you’re planning on riding somewhere sunny.
(more about sun visors)
The same figure’s quoted for the sun visor too – another 99% protection against UV. And Shoei’s apparently got that European Certified, sticking a DIN EN1836 certification on the sun visor. Hurrah.
In the US that equivalent is the ANSI Z80.3-2010 standard which means it should give about as much protection as a pair of shades – and includes a test to ensure it won’t burst into flames. Which is always good to know!
Shoei have made the sun visor a bit longer than the old J-Cruise too. That’s often welcome as there’s always a few folks saying their sun visor doesn’t drop down low enough (just like we found with the J-Cruise I).
And while the placing of the sun visor’s slider is slightly unusual (necessitated by the location of the panel for the integrated bluetooth controller) the action’s nice and smooth and, once you get used to where to find it, it works well.
Comfort and Sizing
(more about comfort and sizing).
The J-Cruise 2 is available in sizes XS-XXL and comes in four shell sizes.
It uses Shoei’s 3D Max-Dry liner. The 3D refers to the 3D laser cut foam that goes inside, and Max-Dry is Shoei’s regular interior designed to absorb and wick sweat away twice as fast as nylon does (which doesn’t seem much of a bold claim since nylon’s basically plastic!).
Still, Max Dry liners are highly regarded and Shoei does make a nice and comfortable liner.
Like other premium helmet makers, you can also buy different thicknesses of cheekpads to help tailor the fit if you find it’s not quite right or loosens off over time.
And if you wear glasses, there’s also a glasses groove in there so the arms of your glasses won’t press into your head.
Overall, owners reckon that the J-Cruise II is a very comfortable helmet . In fact we didn’t find a single owner saying otherwise.
Obviously, you have to get the sizing right in the first place (check out our fitting guide ) and the word is if you find you’re between sizes with the J-Cruise II, you’re best opting for a size up as a size down will be too tight.
Other than that, the quality and overall feel of the comfort liner is spot on.
Looks & Graphics
Shoei’s graphics always tend to be a bit on the conservative and muted side.
If you’re looking for a plain J-Cruise II, then you’ve a matt black, grey or blue to choose from or a gloss black or white.
If you’re interested in buying one, please drop on to the J-Cruise II pages at our recommended retailers using the links below, where you’ll also find any discounts and new graphics that might be around. Cheers.
Best places to buy a Shoei J-Cruise II helmet?
J-Cruise II video
Their videos are usually a bit on the starchy side, but there’s some decent information in this video from Champion Helmets in the Netherlands (8m 30s).
Other stuff – bluetooth, weight, glasses, aero & buffeting, build quality, warranty
If you’re looking to fit a bluetooth headset to your J-Cruise II, it’s designed to work with the SCL 1 or 2 set that’s been developed by Sena and Shoei to integrate with their helmets .
That means there’s a place to stick the controller on the left hand side (there’s a small panel on the bottom edge to remove) and the battery pack slots into a panel at the bottom rear. There’s also plenty of space for speakers and a boom microphone.
Shoei managed to reduce the weight of the J-Cruise II over the old helmet by around 100g. It’s not a lot, but it means the J-Cruise II weighs around 1.4kg, down from the 1.5kg of the old helmet. It’s far from being the lightest open face helmet out there but it’s OK – and a few owners reckon the weight adds to its sense of quality too.
If you’re a glasses wearer, then the Shoei J-Cruise II is great for glasses . There’re glasses grooves inside and a several owners said there’s plenty of space to drop down the sun visor and main visor without interfering with your glasses. And because they’re both optically correct, there isn’t much noticeable distortion even though you’re effectively peering through three panes of plastic.
Shoei reckoned they’ve done a good deal of work on the aero of the helmet to reduce lift, drag and buffeting. That might be measurable in the wind tunnel but I’m not sure owners find much difference. Having said that, we didn’t come across any complaints either so it looks like the aero works just fine.
The build quality’s rated as excellent too. Lots of owners say just how fantastic quality the helmet is – the finish, the internals – you name it, they like it. Which is one of the reasons you go for a premium helmet like a Shoei: they take the time to get things right.
And it means they can happily offer a 5 year warranty on the manufacture of all their helmets.

Good Alternatives to the Shoei J-Cruise II?
You can check out all our open face helmet reviews here . But if you want an interesting selection that we think you should consider, take a look at these open face lids.
First up, and in a similar vein to the J-Cruise II – and even more practical – is the Nolan N40-5 GT. It’s a supremely versatile modular helmet that can be converted into a jet by fully removing the chin bar. The best of both worlds!
Or what about the Sena Savage ? It’s a fibreglass open face helmet that comes with a bluetooth communicator pre-installed. OK it’s a reasonably basic bluetooth, but most owners find it’s fine. And it’s a decent wodge cheaper than the J-Cruise II. Mind you, you’d have to make do with a snap on visor.
The fibreglass Shoei Jo has one built in tho. It also uses the same AIM shell as the J-Cruise II though the Jo’s much lighter and cheaper. It’s more back to basics too.
Finally, what about the Bell Broozer . It really looks the part and it has a fully removable but protective chin bar for when you want to get a lick on. It comes with both a clear and dark visor, weighs about the same as the J-Cruise II but comes in around half the price.

SHOEI Sizing Guide
YANTARNY, AMBER VILLAGE
Yantarny amber village and the resort town of svetlogorsk tour.
Duration: around 7hours
Yantarny amber village and a unic Baltic sea resort Svetlogorsk are located on Sambian peninsula, the heart of Baltic amber. It’s an interesting journey to a historical place. The history of Baltic amber, the ancient amber trade ways, the times of Kenigsberg amber manufacture, the mysterious amber room and more...You'll become an amber expert after the trip! :))
We shall start in the morning. I will take you from Kaliningrad or any other hotel in kaliningrad region. We will go to Yantarny village for a walking tour, then to Svetlogorsk for a walking tour and back to your hotel. We will drop into nice amber shops and a cafe for a snack.
The fishing complex of the region is in crisis - research work of «Rybprognose» is cut down, the fleet is outdated, the catch of fish and seafood is curtailed. About 82% of the extracted sea resources "leave" to foreign countries, about 11% stay in the region, and the rest go to other regions of Russia.
The jeweller (amber) industry exports raw material (washed and sorted lump amber) and intermediate products (plates of pressed fine amber ready for further processing and manufacturing of brooches, rings, ear-rings, etc.). Extraction is carried out by the open-pit method at the Primorsky and Palmnikens deposits.
Oilfields with stocks of industrial value are found in the regional shelf zone of the Baltic Sea. Land deposits with the amount of extraction 0.7 – 0.8 million tons a year («LUKOIL») are now in work. Development of oil-refining industry will be most effective in case of processing on site and this issue is crucial for the region.
Deposits of peat are about 3 billion tons. There are more than 30 deposits in the region. The small part is exported. Dozens of minor deposits of construction materials such as clay, sand and sandy gravel are mined in different parts of the region.
Light industry of the Kaliningrad region is focused at the local consumer. They are Sovietsk hosiery factory, the Kaliningrad shoe factory, etc. However there is an experience of manufacturing sewing semi finished items and products for the large western companies manufacturing production under their trademark.
Mechanical engineering means a lot for the Kaliningrad region. The history of the westernmost region of Russia and its administrative centre, now called Kaliningrad, began in the 13th century, when the King of Bohemia Premysl Otakar II wanted to make his own contribution to the Northern Crusades. In 1255 he sent his forces to help the Teutonic Knights: that's when the fortress was founded at the mouth of the Pregolya River.
The fortress that got the name Königsberg (Latin: Regiomontium, meaning "King's Mountain") in honour of Premysl Otakar II, initially had been built out of wood, but in the two following years was replaced by a stone construction. In due course three different neighbouring towns were united by this name, though until 1724 each of them had been administratively independent: every town had its own town hall, a burgomaster, a court, etc. The interesting fact is that exactly in 1724 the great philosopher and the most famous native-born of the city, Immanuel Kant, was born here.
11 January 1758 is the date when the Russian forces entered Königsberg, and till the end of the Seven Years' War (1763) the city had been under the reign of the Russian Empire. Later Königsberg grew into the capital of the province of East Prussia. In 1871 the city became a part of the German Empire: this change resulted in the creation of several fortifications around the city that included 15 forts.
The new stage of the city's development was caused by the completion of the railway connecting Berlin and St. Petersburg in 1860. Later, in 1901, the opening of a ship canal between Königsberg and Pillau also contributed to the growth of the city. In 1919 Devau Airport was opened: it was the first civil airport in Germany and one of the first airports for general aviation in the world. In the 20th century the city overgrew the fortifying walls: new buildings, railway stations, churches were built. The new architectural styles called Bauhaus and Jugendstil (German for "Modern") started dominating in the city. Architects Hanns Hopp and Friedrich Heitmann were the persons to influence the appearance of the city more than others. The best example of architecture of that time is Amalienau District, that once was a suburban quarter, but now is a part of the Central District of Kaliningrad.
In August 1944, before the end of the World War II, the city of Königsberg suffered a series of bomb attacks performed by the British Air Forces. A lot of citizens died here, the area of Old Town was significantly damaged, many historical monuments, including Königsberg Castle, were ruined.
Later the Soviet forces entered the city, and this battle inflicted further damage for the architectural heritage of Königsberg. In 1945, according to the decision of the Potsdam Conference, the northern part of the German province East Prussia together with its capital Königsberg became a part of the Soviet Union. In 1946 the city's name, as well as the name of the whole region, was changed in honour of Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin — the Soviet politician who died in the same year.
The third smashing attack which damaged the historical heritage of Kaliningrad occurred in the 60s-70s. In order to get rid of the German past, the Soviet leaders made a decision to destroy not only the ancient structures of the city, but the ruins of the castle as well.
Only in the end of the 20th century the attitude towards German architecture started changing, some of the buildings that had survived the war and the Soviet period were restored. The Church of the Holy Family, the church of Queen Louise (known as the Luisenkirche, now is the Kaliningrad Puppet Theatre) and the Königsberg Stock Exchange (now the Cultural Centre) are among them. Königsberg Cathedral, which had been the main catholic cathedral until the 16th century, is now used for museum exhibitions and concerts. This brick Gothic-style Cathedral is one of the very few Gothic buildings in Russia. There are two organs in the cathedral, one of them is considered to be the biggest organ in Europe.
Nine more historical cathedrals have been preserved in Kaliningrad. Juditten Church dated the 13th century (now is St. Nicholas Cathedral) is the oldest building in the city. There are also several reminders of the ancient battles that took place here: the elements of the Second Defensive Belt dated 1850s, the fort structure dated the 19th century and the King's gate built during the Seven Years' War. In 2005, during the preparations for the 750th anniversary of the city, the King's Gate was restored and became the major symbol of the celebration.
There are certain modern monuments in Kaliningrad: a 28-meter high Triumphal Column and the new Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, both located near newly-reconstructed Victory Square (former Hansaplatz, the Square of Hansa). Fortunately, despite all the losses of the 20th century, this city still has something to show you. Just open the panoramas and see it yourself!
