Start your Boston wine tour at Newbury Guest House and don’t miss these 15 top spots.
Think of great sips in Boston, and chowder may come to mind before wine, but the city is a major player in the East Coast wine scene. A tour of Boston vineyards, tasting rooms and some of the city’s top restaurants is a great way for novices and oenophiles alike to discover new vintages and regional gems, and to fully experience the city’s incredible food scene by pairing iconic Boston plates with the perfect glass.
Newbury Guest House sits in the heart of the Back Bay’s famous historic brownstone district near many of the best wine spots in town, and less than a couple hours’ drive from an idyllic countryside dotted with gorgeous don’t-miss vineyards.
Start with in-town favorites.
The Boston Winery
Most of Boston’s major wine happenings happen here. Wine lovers make it a regular destination for wine classes, tastings, and tours; foodies come for pairings with cheese, charcuterie, and Italian comfort food. It’s also one of the best date nights in the city.
The City Winery Boston
It’s one of the best places for wine in Boston, with a tasting room and shop staffed with experts who’ll recommend the perfect pick. Sign up for a food and wine seminar, sample small plate food and wine pairings, check out its regular schedule of intimate concerts, and take advantage of their wine making services to create a bottle of your own to commemorate your visit.
The Urban Grape
This husband-and-wife-owned South End shop was the first in the world to use the Progressive Scale to organize wines by their body, rather than varietal or region. It hosts thrice-weekly free wine tastings for those new to the world of wine, as well as an ongoing series of grape-centric seminars and talks.
Boston Wine School
Take your wine education to the next level and learn about winemaking, wine pairings, and the business of owning a winery at this “snob-free zone” offering small interactive classes including “Crushing on Croatia”, “Is Orange Wine the New Rosé?”, “Wine 101” and “Wine, Cheese and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Founded by wine critic Jonathon Alsop, the school can also arrange special wine-focused dinners.
Now Pouring Wine Bar
Touring with someone who prefers hops to grapes? This Hub Hall hot spot also offers a great selection of craft beers. Their vast and constantly changing selection makes this an ideal place for new discoveries. Enjoy them by the bottle or by the glass or try an easy-drinking craft cocktail at this popular spot for meeting friends for drinks.
Expand your tour at top vineyards just outside Boston.
Westport Rivers Vineyard & Winery
Sitting on 80 acres of Bristol County countryside, Westport Rivers Vineyard & Winery is the largest vineyard in New England. It’s known for the sparkling wines on which it was founded, and it would be a serious miss to visit without sampling (and purchasing) their truly excellent Farmers Fizz Sec, a Prosecco-style pour made from chardonnay grapes with a hint of Riesling.
Hardwick Winery
Don’t let the beautifully restored 18th-century mansion fool you; the winemaking at this Quabbin Reservoir vineyard is completely contemporary. You’ll find traditional reds, whites, and blushes, but the specialties here are flavorful fruit-infused wines such as Enfield Apricot or Massetts Cranberry; and for the extra-adventurous, there’s the oddly alluring Valley Asparagus. Before you go, check their website for their near-constant schedule of festivals, dinners, and wine-and-crafting workshops.
Nashoba Valley Winery
This Massachusetts wine scene heavy hitter runs its own winery, distillery, brewery, and apple-picking operation, not to mention a restaurant and regular tours, tastings and music events. Its 30-plus different varieties include pinot gris, chardonnays, and Rieslings, but if you’re looking to discover homegrown New England flavors, don’t miss their Cranberry Apple Wine and Blueberry Merlot.
Cape Cod Winery
Visit this delightful family-run winery and channel summers on the Cape with a sophisticated bottle of Vineyard Sound Sauvignon Blanc, made just a few miles from the Falmouth shore. Standouts include their expertly produced rosés and summery Mermaid Water, both delicious with the winery’s local-plate menu of shrimp cocktail and lobster rolls. Tip: If you visit before 4:00 p.m., try their Flight of the Day, an ever-changing sampling of five different wines.
Boston restaurants with wine menus that rival the dinner menu.
Grill 23 & Bar
This Back Bay steakhouse has an impressive 2,280-bottle selection that emphasizes wines from California, France, Germany, and Italy’s Piedmont region. Verticals such as the 1980s Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon pair especially well with the restaurant’s choice cuts of steak.
The Oceanaire Seafood Room
Boston culinary history is anchored in seafood, and you won’t find a better or more respected place in town for costal catches and wines that make them shine. Featured delicacies include grilled oysters with bacon, wild Alaska halibut, baked Gloucester haddock and anything and everything in the Oceanaire’s legendary sprawling raw bar. Expert sommeliers are happy to guide you through the award winning 250-label, West Coast-focused wine menu.
Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse
Sleek design elements showcase the Back Bay restaurant’s award-winning selection of 2,200 wines. With stunning verticals from top-notch names such as Château Mouton-Rothschild, Opus One, and Gaja, and a team of crack sommeliers, you can’t go wrong in finding the perfect complement to legendary hand-cut steaks and fresh seafood.
Book your stay now for Boston’s biggest wine event.
The annual Boston Wine Expo is the largest wine event in New England, and attracts experts, industry professionals, enthusiasts, and novices from across the U.S. to explore top vintages by some of the best winemakers as well as lesser-known labels from around the world.
Tickets go on sale soon for the March 2024 Expo, which also offers classes, presentations, and seminars.
Bonus round: What to drink with iconic Boston dishes.
The eats don’t have to be fancy to deserve a great wine pairing – just delicious. If your restaurant doesn’t come with a sommelier, here’s what to know: New England Clam chowder calls for full-bodied whites like Chardonnay or Viognier; lobster rolls are perfect with slightly acidic wines (try a Chablis, or Provence rosé); oysters love Muscadets, Fino sherries and Sancerres; and a Riesling wine with sweet notes will bring out the smokiness of that side of baked beans.
Pair the perfect wine with the perfect place to stay.
When you stay at Newbury Guest House, one of the best mini-tours in town begins and ends just downstairs. The Bar À Vin 1855 bistro offers more than 250 different French varieties from Bordeaux and across France to pair with small plates, as well as regular tastings, classes, and special wine events. And brasserie La Voile , an authentic Cannes import, has a truly impressive wine list designed to complement its South-of-France seafood menu. Both spots have expert sommeliers on hand to assist with the perfect pairing.
Wherever your Boston wine tour takes you, Newbury Guest House is a grape place to start (sorry – we held off as long as we could). Give us a call, book your stay, and toast yourself for making a great decision.

15 Best Boston Beer, Wine and Food Tours
From Paul Revere and Samuel Adams to the Boston Tea Party, Boston Massachusetts is arguably the most historic city in all of America.
With only slightly more than 600,000 residents, it’s not large by modern city standards, but it’s got a well-earned reputation as a tough town that fiercely protects its heritage and traditions – and one that loves its beer and baseball too.
Due to its proximity to some of New England’s most historic and natural wonders, it’s a great stepping-point for other quick trips to the surrounding area.
Below are 15 of the best beer, wine and food tours in Boston.
1. The Original Boston Brews Tour
Boston has always had a reputation as a town that enjoys its beer; if you’ve got a few hours to kill, there’s no better way to taste more of Boston’s favorite brews than by guided tour.
The tour includes stops at a few of the area’s most friendly taverns and breweries, where in addition to a thorough sampling and having nearly 100 different draft beers at your fingertips, you’ll also enjoy a great lunch.
From dark beer to light and almost everything in between, this tour has it all. It’s a great way to learn about the city’s history and meet some likeminded locals too.
2. Fenway Park History Pub Crawl
Few things go together as well as baseball and beer, and when in a city like Boston that loves both, enjoying them together is a must.
This tour’s guide will be a local foodie, beer fanatic, and lover of all things baseball, so it’s really like getting three for the price of one.
You and your travel partners will hit at least three bars that are fan favorites, and a local brewery just a stone’s throw from the stadium.
If you’re lucky enough to go during baseball season, the atmosphere will be intense, but fear not, even if it’s the offseason the bars draw a great crowd.

3. Historic Taverns and Pizza Tour
Walking tours are a great way to get some exercise, see the sights up close, and get a great feel for the layout of a city.
This 2 ½-hour tour focuses on taverns and pizza – two things that go together like peanut butter and jelly.
On the tour, you’ll visit some of the region’s most historic landmarks, many of which date back to the country’s colonial days.
In bygone eras, taverns were often rallying points for tipsy patriots itching for a fight with the colonial rulers of whom they weren’t too fond. This tour will take you to some places that were once the haunts of some well-known historical figures.
4. Guided Brewery Tour with Drinks and either Lunch or Dinner
Microbreweries and brewpubs are all the rage in Boston. Along with some of the city’s larger and more well-known breweries, they give Boston a beer culture that’s very unique.
On this tour, you’ll sample nearly 20 beers and learn about the brewing process.
If you’re staying downtown, door-to-door transportation is included. Depending on the tour you choose, it will either include lunch or dinner.
Even though a meal is included, it’s best not to show up on an empty stomach as some of the beers you’ll try are pretty strong. You wouldn’t want to fall asleep before you’ve gotten your money’s worth!
5. Historic Pub Crawl Tour along the Freedom Trail
Boston is one of the country’s most historic cities, and with such a rich beer history, this pub crawl along Freedom Trail is a great way to get your fill of both.
The crawl will lead you to many historic downtown pubs that are food and drink favorites of the locals -many of which are some of the oldest pubs in the country.
The tour lasts about 2 ½ hours. Like many guests, you may find yourself striking out on your own after the tour and revisiting some of the places you’ve just seen, making a night of it.
6. Food and History Tour from the North End to the Freedom Trail
In case you weren’t paying attention in elementary school history, Boston Harbor is one of the most historic areas in the country and is considered the birthplace of the Revolution.
This walking tour includes stops at historically important areas along the harbor and wharf, which runs along Atlantic Avenue.
You’ll stop into a few shops and eateries, and take an afternoon break for an espresso and a pastry.
Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, and the Old State House are on the itinerary as well. Near the end, you’ll wind through picturesque Beacon Hill, one of the city’s gems.
7. South End Wine and Walking Tour
Though pretty much everybody knows about Boston’s ages-old beer tradition, what’s not so well known is that the city has undergone a bit of a wine renaissance lately too.
This tour of the city’s South End winds its way through Victorian-era flats, quaint shops, and plenty of restaurants, cafes, and bars that are usually full of cheerful revelers.
At each wine tasting stop, you’ll enjoy reserved tables, food selected specifically to go with your wines, and knowledgeable staff that’ll walk you through the samples and give you a refreshing insight into the finer points of wine-snobbery.
8. Independence Pub Crawl
With so many pubs and pub crawls in the city, it’s a wonder you can even walk down the sidewalk without stumbling over inebriated tourists.
For those who’ve only got a few hours to spare, this short but fun pub crawl gives guests the option of choosing what time of the day best suits them.
The tour is led by a local history and spirits aficionado, who’ll take you to some popular and historically significant pubs, where you’ll be able to sample many of the city’s microbrews and hard ciders too.
Food and tips aren’t included, so bring a few extra bucks.
9. Back Bay Walking and Wine Tasting Tour
Boston’s Back Bay is a trendy area and one especially popular with those who like experiencing the city’s history while sampling some amazing cuisine and wines that were just made for one another.
If you’re not up on wine terms and pairings, fear not, your guide will tell you all there is to know so you can get the most bang for your buck.
Hotel pickup and drop-off aren’t included, but if you’re staying downtown you may be able to walk to the meeting point.
Since it’s a walking tour, be sure to wear a pair of comfy shoes.
10. Sip of Boston Brewery Tour
Of all the famous brands of beer brewed in Boston, Samuel Adams is probably the most well-known. Though it started out small, it has grown significantly and now ships its flagship Boston Lager all over the country.
On this tour, you’ll visit the brewing facilities of Samuel Adams and Harpoon and get a fascinating historical insight from the tour’s knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide.
From pilsners and stouts to wheat beers and pale ales, you’ll sample many of the most popular, and probably a few that you’ve never even heard of.
Bottled water and snacks are included, as is bus transportation.
11. North End Wine and Walking Tour
When visiting a new city, it can be difficult to get a feel of where things are before it’s time to pack your bags and head home.
If that sounds like you, consider a walking tour, which will not only get you some exercise and an up-close-and-personal view of the city but on this tour will include some of the region’s best wines.
Group size is limited to 12; you’ll explore Boston’s Little Italy and your wines will be paired with some delectable sweet and savory treats that’ll really satisfy that sweet tooth of yours.
12. Cocktails and Cannoli
If paired correctly, cocktails and sweets can go together nicely, and though Boston is predominately Irish, it’s also got a thriving Italian community that’s especially known for its cannoli.
This tour includes stops to some of the area’s most noted bakeries. You’ll even watch chocolate being made, after which you’ll get to satisfy those taste buds by sampling tiramisu and cannoli along with your cocktail.
The tour lasts about 2 ½ hours. During that time you’ll learn a great deal about the area’s fascinating history too.
Though this tour is brief, it’s a great value for your time and money.
13. South End Food and Drink Tour
Boston’s South End is one of the city’s most famous neighborhoods and has been notably featured in many popular movies about the gangsters who made their names there.
Though the area was once an Irish stronghold, it’s become more diverse lately. On this tour, you’ll stop into a few shops that may seem out of place with their remarkably international cuisine.
The architecture is amazing too, as is the area’s rich history and the amazing restaurants serving lots of traditional classics and some with a contemporary twist.
The tour includes a fair amount of walking and lasts about 3 ½ hours.
14. New England’s Beaches, Beers and Bluffs
If you’ve got a wide-open itinerary, a pocket full of credit cards, and want to experience all that New England has to offer in one tour, then this is for you.
This seven-day tour includes visits to neighboring states like New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont. Along the way, you’ll see some amazing natural beauty, learn about the area’s colonial history, and sample some of the region’s most famous and delicious beers too.
Highlights include a Maine lobster cruise and a visit to the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe.
There’s just too much to list, so check it out thoroughly before booking.
15. North End Secret Food Tour
Boston is one of those cities that’s full of unique and distinct neighborhoods that have their own food, feel and history.
This three-hour walking tour is limited to 12 people and will lead you through the city’s North End. Your guide will take you to some of the neighborhood’s most diverse and delectable restaurants, where you’ll sample seafood, sweets, beer, and wine, all while rubbing elbows with some locals and getting to know your travel mates.
Things will get kicked off with a lobster roll, and you’ll try pizza, homemade sausages and some craft beer too.

Plus, the style goes with just about everything. Where To Buy Them : Buy Now From OluKai Price (at time of publication): $110
BioRepublic Lost Baggage Under Eye Emergency Repair Mask
Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. My skin feels so tight and parched during flights, and while I've been known to slap on a sheet mask at 12,000 feet, my 11 year old's mortification on a recent trip had me rethinking this strategy. Hydaway Collapsible Water Bottle
Why I Love It : I am a dedicated Stanley girl, but when I travel, I like to keep things as light and portable as possible. A recent trip to Washington D.C. had me singing the praises of my Hydaway Collapsible Water Bottle , especially after paying $6 for a tiny bottle of water the afternoon we arrived and embarked sans water. I love the bottle's muted color options (I have the Hydaway in Twilight), sturdy handle, and fuss-free cleaning; fully extended it holds 17 ounces of water, making this smart little number perfect for filling up on the go. Where to Buy Them : The Hydaway Collapsible Water Bottle is available at several online merchants; I purchased through REI. Available here on Amazon . Price (at time of publication) : $27.95.
Packing Cubes
Why We Love Them : This is one of those things that we don't know how we traveled without them. Packing cubes keep things organized, save space in a suitcase, and take the pain out of the packing process. If you know and love someone who travels, this set would make the perfect gift. Where to Buy Them : There are so many options for packing cubes on Amazon, but we particularly LOVE this set . Price (at time of publication) : $16.99 for 8 cubes
Bei s Backpack
Why We Love Them : I've been a fan of Beis for years now, starting with the Weekender (it’s my absolute favorite travel bag for short car trips or flying and is surprisingly roomy). I recently purchased another Beis item — the backpack. With a padded interior sleeve, two water bottle pockets, and plenty of organization built-in — we’re talking zippered interior pockets, pen slots, a key leash, and more — this is the best backpack I’ve ever owned . It also has a full-zip opening, so it’s easy to pack, and the trolley pass-through makes it the perfect carry-on companion. This olive beauty is officially my new favorite personal item while traveling, and I’ve already brought it on several trips. Where to Buy Them : Buy Now On Beis Price (at time of publication) : $88
Accessory Organizers
Why We Love Them : We bought this set of two accessory organizers for a recent trip and think they would make a fun stocking stuffer filled with all sorts of small and useful travel goodies — chapstick, hair ties, mini lotions, bandaids, etc. The gift recipient can then use the organizers for travel. Where to Buy Them : Buy Now On Amazon Price (at time of publication) : $17.66
Away Everywhere Zip Backpack
Why We Love It: The sleek style of the Away Everywhere Zip Backpack looks at home in just about any environment, making it a great transition bag if you need to hop right from a flight into a work meeting (or want to start exploring as soon as you land). It's water-resistant, has a padded laptop sleeve to keep your devices safe, and the full wrap-around zipper makes it incredibly easy to grab what you need in a cramped airplane seat. I love it! Where To Buy It: Buy Now From Away Price (at time of publication) : $195
Sterling Pacific 40L Cabin Travel Case
Why We Love It: Engagement Editor Meg Archer recently travel-tested this high-end aluminum travel case, and it can only be described as the Lamborghini of Luggage: "The Sterling Pacific 40L Travel Case is hands down the best I've ever owned or reviewed. It's stunning inside and out, timelessly stylish, and rolls like a dream. Honestly, I didn't know luggage could move like this." It's undeniably a splurge, but if you're looking for a piece of eye-catching yet understated luxury-tier luggage, this is it. Where To Buy It : Buy Now From Sterling Pacific Price (at time of publication): $2,150
Anker Power Bank Portable Generator
Why We Love It : Throw out all your assumptions about generators. The Anker Power Bank Portable Generator is all-electric (so it's totally silent), super compact, and has a massive 60,000 mAh capacity that can power multiple devices dozens of times on a single charge. It also retains an impressive 85% charge after a whole year of non-use, making it absolutely vital during emergencies. This bad boy kept us in touch with family during a multi-day blackout, but we also love it for camping trips and off-grid adventures. Where To Buy It: Buy Now On Amazon Price (at time of publication) : $149.99

10 Outstanding Breweries You’ll Want To Visit In Boston
Boston's craft beer scene features numerous outstanding breweries beyond the well-known Samuel Adams Brewery.
Boston will forever be associated with Samuel Adams Brewery, which makes sense as that's a household name. However, the beer scene here extends far beyond the offerings of one company. The Boston area is peppered with enough craft breweries to keep even the most ardent beer lover busy! Here are 10 outstanding breweries to get you started:
1. Trillium Brewing (Boston)
RateBeer recently declared Trillium the third best brewery on the planet! Trillium excels at producing hop-forward ales, using local ingredients. There are two locations: one at 369 Congress Street in Boston and the other 110 Shawmut Road in Canton.
2. Harpoon (Boston)
Founded in 1986, Harpoon is a well-established Boston brewery that offers popular IPAs, a couple of golden ales, stout, and UFO beers. In the tasting room, pair your beer with the company’s scrumptious pretzels. Harpoon is located at 306 Northern Avenue in Boston. You can rent Harpoon Brewing in Boston for a private event through RestauRent!
3. Lamplighter Brewing Company (Cambridge)
If you’re looking for unique beer, mosey over to Lamplighter, where one-off, experimental batches are commonplace. This brewer often employs an atypical type of yeast (Brettanomyces), which sets it apart, as does the quirky location –an old car garage! Lamplighter Brewing Company is located at 284 Broadway in Cambridge.
4. Night Shift Brewing (Everett)
This brewery got its name because the company’s founders initially worked day jobs while brewing at night. Night Shift earned a Best of Boston award last year, along with recognition from the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup. Try the Santilli, a refreshing IPA with notes of pine, or the Matisse – the latter is one of the small-batch beers, so it's not always available. The taproom is located at 87 Santilli Highway in Everett.
5. Dorchester Brewing Company (Dorchester)
With an appealing outdoor patio area and games, this brewery has plenty to recommend – not least of which is beer. How can you resist a brew called The Mind Flayer? From cream ales to Irish dry stouts, there’s something for everyone to drink here. Dorchester Brewing Company also carries beer from other craft breweries such as Stillwater Artisanal and Decadent Ales. You’ll find it at 1250 Massachusetts Avenue in Dorchester.
6. Mystic Brewery (Chelsea)
Known for producing Saison-style beer and for their square fermenters (most fermenters are cylindrical), Mystic Brewery is well worth a visit. Settle into a tasting room built using reclaimed materials and sample Saisons, Sour Lambic-type beers, and more. It is located at 174 Williams Street in Chelsea.
7. Winter Hill Brewing (Somerville)
If you prefer to pair beer with food, then you’ll appreciate the small plates and sandwiches available at Winter Hill. Currently, the company’s small batch beers include IPAs and sours, with Belgian ale and an imperial stout soon to be added to the selection. Winter Hill Brewing is located at 328 Broadway in Somerville.
8. Castle Island Brewing (Norwood)
Want a great beer without having to sound educated – or interested – in the production process? Then this low-key brewery, which promotes its lack of pretension, may be a good fit for you. The beer menu includes innovative options like the Fat Elvis (a porter with peanut butter, banana, and bacon flavors) and Over the Line (a smoked beer). Visit the taproom at 31 Astor Avenue in Norwood. You can rent Castle Island Brewing Co. in Norwood for a private event through RestauRent!
9. Cambridge Brewing Company (Cambridge)
This brewpub, founded in 1989, serves craft beer that is sometimes also single-batch beer. Sample the Blunderbuss Barleywine, which is aged in a whiskey barrel and has an ABV of 13%, or the ever-popular Tall Tale Pale Ale. This brewery also boasts an appealing patio area. The Cambridge Brewing Company is located at 1 Kendall Square in Cambridge.
10. Democracy Brewing (Boston)
New kid on the block alert! Democracy Brewing, a worker-owned brewery and pub, is opening in May 2018. In addition to a tasting room, the establishment will feature a full restaurant. The beer selection consists of a stout, ale, IPA, Saison, and seasonal offerings. Democracy Brewing’s décor draws inspiration from Boston’s Revolutionary history. Find it at 35 Temple Place in Boston. You can also rent Democracy Brewing for a private event through RestauRent.

We haven't included Sam Adams because everyone is already familiar with the brand. However, the Sam Adams brewery offers a free tour worth taking. You can also get the inside scoop - and often samples - on these factory tours in Boston.

City Winery Boston educates guests on wine making and tasting
By Levan Reid
October 24, 2024 / 12:55 PM EDT / CBS Boston
BOSTON - At City Winery Boston, educators are teaching guests about all things wine, from how it's made to tasting it properly.
Learning about wine
City Winery is an urban winery. While the grapes come from all over the country, all the wine is made local. Classes are offered in winemaking and pairing wines with certain foods like pasta, made at the winery's pasta making class.
Wine educator Marygiulia Capobianco said she loves teaching people about all things wine.
"I mean, there's no nerd like a wine nerd," Capobianco said. "So we love all the questions, all the enthusiasm and it's like opening a door to a whole new world that people can explore. It's history, it's science, it's food."
Capobianco also showed WBZ-TV about the decanting process, which aerates the wine before drinking.
"This is the decanter and essentially what it's doing is it mimics the process," Capobianco said. "You see people swirl their wine glasses when they drink, you are just opening up the wine."
City Winery Boston
City Winery has a sustainability program where the young wines go into kegs.
"The keg is like a beer keg, exactly the same and when it's empty, we wash them and we reuse them so that way, we don't have waste," said vineyard liaison Aurelien Gousse.
Located on Beverly Street in Boston, City Winery is also a concert venue. Guests can take in live music or comedy while sipping locally-made wine.
Levan Reid is a reporter for WBZ This Morning. He is also a veteran sports reporter for WBZ-TV.

Best Boston city tours
1. fenway park tour.
- Things to do
- Sport events
- Fenway/Kenmore
This is the one you haul all the out-of-towners to—mostly because you can’t wait to go yourself. The hour-long tour includes player and ballpark history and visits to the press box and Pesky’s Pole; depending on the guide, you also might visit the bullpens and peek behind the anachronistic scoreboard. Game-day tours are available as well—hours, options and prices vary, check the website for special event info and restrictions.
2. Historic Sightseeing Cruise
This narrated, hour-long sightseeing tour takes you around some of the Harbor Islands while recounting the city’s history as a shipping port, as well as the role that the harbor played in the Revolutionary War. Just prepare yourself for the conditions (tours are offered daily, year-round), as well as the inevitable real estate envy when you sail past all the stunning waterfront condos.
3. Freedom Trail Tour
The Freedom Trail often gets a bad rap among locals, some of whom are tired of the gussied-up guides posing as historical figures as they shuffle tourists through the historical sites. If you don ’ t want to take a guided tour, it ’ s easy to enjoy the lovely self-guided stroll, two and a half miles that remind you of the city’s unparalleled Colonial and Revolutionary history. And if the trail has only whetted your appetite for historical discovery, consider taking a self-guided tour along the Black Heritage Trail or the Women’s Heritage Trail .
4. Old State House Tour
- Attractions
- Historic buildings and sites
- price 1 of 4
Designed by Bulfinch and completed in 1798, this magnificent structure replaced the old legislative building across Boston Common, which had been the headquarters of the British government. Included with admission, tours help visitors understand how the Old State House was the political center of Revolutionary Boston. Enthusiastic guides explain how the voices of John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and others rang out from the halls and changed American history forever.
5. North End Market Tour
Even if you’ve eaten in the North End before, Boston Food Tours ’ exploration of the neighborhood will take your knowledge to another level by teaching (and feeding) you along the way. On the tour you ’ ll learn how Italians ’ food traditions were adapted to America, while acquiring insider cooking tips and discovering where to buy the very best ingredients. At multiple stops, you ’ ll learn about the very best of the neighborhood, ensuring you ’ ll get more out of your future visits.
6. Ghosts & Gravestones Tour
Our city’s history is not all puppy dogs and rainbows—death, disease and crime make sizeable appearances as well. By taking a Ghosts & Gravestones tour (days/times vary by season), you will learn about murders and executions like the ones that took place on the Boston Common. Try not to be spooked by stories of paranormal activity at the Omni Parker House or the legend of the Boston Strangler.
7. Walks with the Local AMC Chapter
The Appalachian Mountain Club wants to show you parts of Greater Boston you’ve never explored before. Year-round hikes and nature walks, both accessible and challenging, take you all around the state (and sometimes New Hampshire, too), lasting anywhere from 3 to 20 miles. Dates and times vary, and walks cost just $1 if you’re not an AMC member.
8. Castle Island Park and Fort Independence
- Parks and gardens
- South Boston
Locals sometimes forget about the 1850 granite bastion known as Fort Independence, poised at the ocean end of South Boston on Castle Island. It’s a good spot for an all-day picnic, or to pretend you’re going on a medieval raid. Free tours of the fort are offered on summer weekends; check in advance for details.
9. Boston Lobster Tours
Trap-to-table is the only way to eat your favorite crustacean. Take a tour aboard a legit Downeast-style lobster boat with up to three other friends (bench seating is offered), and cruise around the Boston Harbor for 75 minutes, learning about the local industry and hauling up two traps of your own; whatever is of legal size is yours to keep and (presumably) eat.
10. City Wine Tours
Two hours of wine drinking under the auspices of learning? Yes, we imagine a few Bostonians would partake. Choose between four neighborhoods—South End, Back Bay, North End or Assembly Row in Somerville—then join an intimate group led by a wine connoisseur. The guide leads you to top-notch hot spots where you’ll learn how to taste, pair and buy fine wines.
