Covered Wagon Ride in Banff with Western Cookout

  • Star Ratings: 4/5 (80+ reviews)

From May to September, saddle up for a ride along the Bow River in Banff and a Western-style cookout! But don’t worry – you can choose to either ride on horseback or in the covered wagon to get to the dining site. Both options give ample opportunity to check out the majestic Rocky Mountain terrain.

Horse and Wagon ride in Banff

At the dining site, tuck into a meal of steak, salad, baked beans, and potatoes while also trying out your roping skills and playing a game of horseshoes. This tour is fun for families (although horseback riders must be over eight years old).

This was an interesting experience. I mean, how often does the chance to ride in a covered wagon present itself? The barbeque lunch was so good! My friend is vegan. I didn’t know they offered a vegan alternative to the lunch, but they said you had to request it ahead of time. However, they magically made it appear, even though we hadn’t pre-requested it. They went above and beyond. – Review via Viator user Deborah_P

the trip overall was good but a few things to be aware of: The Edmonton Sky shuttle has not been in service since 2020! You must take a taxi. The guide was surprised that we were told to schedule extras through her and by the time the trip started, much of what we wanted was already booked out. You must book the extras yourself. Neither intrepid nor tour radar does this. this was unclear in all the communications. you can't talk to a tour radar person. on line chat is fine if you are not in a hurry for answers. That aside, the guide was knowledgeable, pleasant, and worked hard to give all tour participants an extraordinary time.

What people love about banff national park tours.

Great people, great adventure off the beaten track.
Tour guide Tyler Davis and coach driver, Sharmake, were excellent. Tyler provided much of Canadian facts and a bit of history along the way. Sharmake was an excellent driver who got us to our destinations safely. Rockie Mountaineer was the best! Such service! The gold leaf coach was the way to go. Canadian Rockies were breathtaking and the glacier…WOW! I recommend Collette travel.

Guided Tours in Banff National Park

Ever since the amazing beauty of Banff National Park were first discovered, people have been flocking here to experience for themselves its natural wonders, this includes Native Americans thousands of years ago, although they may not have had the concept of vacationing that far back.

For people visiting Banff, the question can often be is how to get around, and how to see all the highlights – especially if you have limited time and/or you don’t have you haven’t rented a car.

But there’s no need to worry, there are plenty of Banff guided tours available.

Go Go Gondola

The high point of this tour (literally) is certainly the Banff Gondola at Sulphur Mountain. Sulphur Mountain is the birthplace of Banff National Park. Workers on the Canadian Pacific Railway, with the help of explorer and amateur comedian Joe Healy discovered natural hotsprings . After a protracted legal battle over who actually owned the rights to the area.

Spend just 8 minutes on the Banff Gondola and you’ll be near the summit of Sulphur Mountain, 2,281 metres (7,486 ft) above sea level. From there you’ll have the opportunity to get great panoramic photos, and views, of Banff and Banff National Park.

Once you’ve taken in the amazing beauty up here, you can grab a snack at the summit restaurant, or pop into the gift shop to pick up some great Banff Gondola swag.

Emeralds in the Wild

The only thing that matches the beauty of Banff’s mountaintops are its emerald colored lakes.

Emerald Lake provides a beautiful example of one of the more interesting phenomena that occurs in the Canadian Rockies . The highest peaks of the range capture weather that comes in from the Pacific Ocean to the west. Clouds get hung up on the peaks and discharge their moisture down the slopes of the mountains.

Where the slopes gather water, you get patches of coastal rainforest, quite different from the landscape elsewhere in the Rockies . Western red cedar trees and devil’s club, a large plant with thorns and maple-like leaves, are common in the rainforest patches. One of the most well-known such patches is the west side of Emerald Lake.

It’s quite obvious to even the most casual observer, the great difference between the west side and east side of the lake. The vegetation, the water, the atmosphere; all of it points to the difference. There are interpretive signs posted around the lake to further explain it.

But, of course, Emerald Lake is much more than an interesting quirk of weather. Down at the lakeshore, for example, you can also learn about the Burgess Shale , a quarry visible from the shore via a telescopic lens. An exhibit will tell you all about the fossils found in the quarry. Besides a guided tour you can take from the Burgess Shale Research Foundation, this is the closest you can get to the quarry.

Come to the lake in late May or early June, when the snow is melting , and you’ll see spring flowers come into bloom. Bright yellow glacier lilies herald the coming of the new season. Hot pink calypso orchids come shortly thereafter.

Two other great lakes you’ll want to check out in the Rockies are actually very close to the town of Banff. These include Two Jack Lake and Lake Minnewaka.

A First-Timer’s Guide to Banff National Park

Few bodies of water are as photogenic as Moraine Lake.

Photo by Rowan Sims Photography / Shutterstock

Canada’s first national park encompasses 2,564 square miles of pristine wilderness along the eastern edge of the spine of the Rocky Mountains. To put it all into perspective, 96 percent of the park is wilderness. The scenic highways that wind between towering peaks are well maintained, but even the most popular roadways in the park feel far removed from civilization. Unlike many national parks , there are small communities nestled amid the subalpine forests of the park’s Bow Valley. The town of Banff , the highest incorporated town in Canada at 4,537 feet above sea level, sits just a few miles past the iconic Banff Park Gate at the eastern boundary. Less than an hour’s drive west is the hamlet of Lake Louise , a base camp for exploring the hiking trails and vistas surrounding the intensely turquoise waters of Lake Louise itself. From there, the Icefields Parkway leads northwest into truly remote territory and the border with neighboring Jasper National Park.

The Trans-Canada Highway leads through the heart of the park, making it simple to connect Banff with Lake Louise and the Icefields Parkway. The Bow Valley Parkway provides an alternate route between the two communities (and a perfect way to make the trip into a loop).

To get your bearings when you arrive in Banff, visit the Banff Visitor Centre for local advice. There are also park visitor information services in Lake Louise and at the Cave and Basin National Historic Site , the birthplace of the park and a living display of the human and natural history of the Rockies.

From here, it’s a real-life choose-your-own-adventure story.

What to do in Banff National Park in summer

Banff National Park changes with the seasons and is a natural playground all year round. Summer, when alpine flowers bloom and lakes are free of ice, is the most popular time to visit, and it’s worth getting out early in the day while bucket-list spots are quiet. We suggest timing your trip for June or September to boost your chances of sharing the trails with wildlife rather than people.

Low-difficulty paths (like the one to Moraine Lake) attract plenty of tourists, so consider Banff’s more involved trails to beat the crowds : Afar Executive Editor Billie Cohen recommends the “Big Beehive” trail, which leads hikers past Lake Agnes and up a series of switchbacks, offering incredible views of the Bow Valley and Lake Louise.

Marvel at scenic lakes

When the Canadian Rockies were formed millennia ago, retreating glaciers left behind vivid blue lakes colored by glacial silt and canyons carved by water. On the must-see list (heading from east to west) are Lake Minnewanka , Lake Louise , Moraine Lake in the famed Valley of the Ten Peaks, and Peyto Lake up at the highest point of the Icefields Parkway.

Jump into a canoe at Lake Louise or Moraine Lake for a quintessentially Canadian experience paddling the waters. To discover the untouched shores of the Bow River flowing the length of the valley, join a float trip that meanders gently down the river on a passenger raft.

Get into the spirit of the mountains

More than 1,000 miles of hiking trails crisscross Banff National Park, and exploring them is undoubtedly the best way to get up close and personal with the mountains. There are hikes for every age and ability within town boundaries and further afield.

To start, follow the trail right from downtown Banff up Tunnel Mountain— the park’s smallest official summit—for a sweeping view over the valley. Other options include the lakeshore trail to Stewart Canyon on the Lake Minnewanka Loop near Banff and the tree-lined path from Lake Louise up to the historic (and still operating!) Lake Agnes Teahouse . Bring cash to treat yourself to the daily soup or “mountain bar” and enjoy the view from the original teahouse windows, where hikers have been refueling for more than a century.

Reach the summits

To really wrap your head around the grandeur of the Rockies, it’s best to get up high for a view of the endless peaks. Luckily, summit shortcuts are available at the Banff Gondola , Lake Louise Summer Gondola , and Mount Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift . Hiking trails lead out along the ridgelines from each gondola or lift, and the vistas extend to the horizon. Thrill-seekers can get an added adrenaline rush by clipping onto the iron ladder rungs and cable suspension bridges of Mount Norquay’s guided Via Ferrata .

What to do in Banff National Park in winter

Falling snow blankets the mountains in winter and brings a sense of renewal. Those willing to explore this winter wonderland are rewarded with exclusive access and distinctive experiences.

Stretch your snow legs

There are plenty of ways to stay warm and discover the rosy-cheeked excitement of good old-fashioned winter fun. The snowy trails of the park remain accessible all winter thanks to snowshoes , which can be rented in both Lake Louise and Banff. Skate rentals are also available and highly recommended to glide across the sparkling, frozen surface of Lake Louise.

Another experience that’s not to be missed is a guided ice walk into the glacial realms of Johnston Canyon , where pillars of cascading ice form a surreal frozen world.

Slide on snow

Skiers and snowboarders from around the world are drawn to the three world-class ski resorts of Banff National Park. There’s a combined 7,748 acres of skiable terrain at Banff’s local Mount Norquay , the nearby Banff Sunshine , and Lake Louise Ski Resort .

Go snow tubing

Nonskiers won’t be disappointed either. Mount Norquay and Lake Louise ski resorts both offer snow tubing , the ultimate version of your childhood tobogganing experiences, not to mention horse-drawn sleigh rides and dogsledding .

Soak in the elements

A visit to Banff isn’t complete without a trip to the Banff Upper Hot Springs . Human history at the naturally heated mineral hot springs dates back thousands of years to the First Nations people who first called these mountains home. Open year-round, the experience is best during the wintertime when falling snowflakes melt into the rising steam.

Tips for visiting Banff

Mother Nature rules here. Layering in warm clothing is the locals’ rule of thumb—especially early or late in the day, which are optimal times for wildlife viewing. Here are a few other key insights to make the most of your time in the mountains.

Get your park pass

Entry to Banff National Park is via a paid permit system, which supports the preservation of the park. Considering it’s about US$8 per adult (or US$16/family) per day, it’s often worth getting the Discovery Pass, which provides entry to more than 80 Parks Canada destinations for you (US$55) or your family (about US$111) for a year. Passes are available at the park gates and visitor centers, but we recommend getting yours online in advance.

Travel by tour or transit

Parking areas at popular sights fill up early on busy summer days. Hop on a guided tour for hassle-free sightseeing ( your options include incredible heli-hiking experiences ), or use the park’s accessible transit system .

Make time to wander

The streets of Banff are home to a vibrant dining scene and locally owned artisan shops inspired by the surroundings. Each is unique, from the regional artwork at Canada House Gallery to the craft spirits “from glacier to glass” produced by Park Distillery .

The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel sits among trees and mountains, under a blue sky.

More than 130 years old, Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel is worth a visit, even if you’re not staying the night.

The Ultimate Banff 5-Day Itinerary for Travelers

Ready to finally make that trip to Banff National Park? Trust us, it will be worth it! Set your sights on the dream destination you’ve seen in countless photos—crystal blue waters, majestic snow-capped mountains, and wildlife all around. Even if you only have a few days to spare, you can still make the most of your visit with the help of an expertly crafted Banff 5 day Itinerary. For the best experience, we recommend guided tours to make the most out of your visit and immerse yourself in nature, the culture,  and the history of this remarkable mountain destination.

Keep in mind that Banff is open year-round, so some of the activities available will vary. To help you plan your trip no matter the season, we’ve put together an itinerary for spring-summer-fall, along with some winter alternatives. So go ahead and start packing: Banff is waiting for you.

How To Get To Banff

To explore Banff and its surrounding areas such as Canmore, Kananaskis, and Lake Louise, the closest airport is the Calgary International Airport, just 1 ½ hours away from Banff. On arrival, rent a car at the airport or take advantage of the airport shuttle service for door-to-door transportation to Banff and Canmore. Sit back and enjoy the stunning views and the short trip without worrying about driving and Banff’s limited parking. It’s important to note that all visitors are required to pay national park fees regardless of how they arrive.

Day 1 in Banff

On the first day in Banff, we recommend you take a tour that covers all the top sights to get an introduction to the area and familiarize yourself with the different locations. This tour will help you navigate around the park and decide where you want to go for a more in-depth look.

Morning: Discover Banff on the ground and above on the Sulphur Mountain Gondola

Take a small group tour to see Banff’s top highlights on the popular Discover Banff & Gondola Tour. You’ll start with the ground-level sights, including the historic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, the nearby Bow Falls, Lake Minnewanka, and the Surprise Corner Lookout, which is one of the scenic spots you’ve likely seen in photos before. You’ll spend enough time in each location without feeling rushed.

After this tour, you’ll head on a ride up the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain – No trip to Banff is complete without a trip to the summit that reaches up to 7486 feet (2281 metres). The views from the gondola are fantastic to the climax when you witness 360-degree views of six mountain ranges and can see the main Banff town sights below during your morning tour. While you are at the summit, you’ll have plenty of time to stroll the boardwalk, including a walk to Sanson’s Peak or a tour of the Discovery Centre for historical and geological information. Stop in at Castle Mountain Coffee to grab a bite or a drink. You can sit on the outdoor summit patio, take in the views, and feel grateful that you finally made it here to see this incredible part of the world before you head back down.

This 5 ½ hour tour is jam-packed with beautiful sights! After your ride back to the hotel, you’ll feel satisfied you’ve seen so much already on your first day. Check availability for the popular Discover Banff & Gondola Tour.

Afternoon: Discover Banff Townsite

After a busy morning of sightseeing, take some time in the afternoon to explore the Banff Townsite. For shopping or lunch,  stop by the Sundance Mall at 215 Banff Ave for boutiques, souvenirs, sportswear, jewelry, and restaurants. For more information about the area and activities, stop by the Discover Banff  located in the mall, and one of the knowledgeable agents would be happy to assist. If you are interested in history, check out the Whyte Museum or the  Buffalo Nations Luxton Museum for an opportunity to learn about the First Nations People of the Northern Plains and the Canadian Rockies.

Evening: Food & Dining

If you’re eager to discover the food and dining spots, check out the list of favourite spots at the end of this list.
