What to do if you lose your rental car keys

It may not be as easy as getting a spare key from the company

key travel car hire

Losing her rental car keys was not on Susan Kelly’s itinerary when she visited Kauai, Hawaii, recently. But there she was with her husband, rummaging through their hotel room, retracing her steps and trying to locate the elusive fob for their sedan.

“I was looking everywhere for it,” recalls Kelly, a respiratory therapist from Elmhurst, Ill. “Finally, we called Avis to find out if they had a spare.”

The couple waited on hold and finally got through to a representative who said Avis might have an extra key, but they would have to call the airport location.

Kelly wondered how much of her Hawaiian vacation she would lose. How much would her car rental company charge to retrieve her keys? And would travel insurance cover her loss?

There are no reliable industry-wide statistics on car rental lockouts. Enterprise Rent-A-Car says less than 1 percent of customers across its brands last year were locked out of their cars and had to call the company for help. That number doesn’t include customers who decided to use their own service, such as AAA, to help them unlock the vehicle.

Getting locked out of your rental car is a serious matter for drivers, says Michael Stalf, CEO of the German car rental company Myonecar .

“It can be the end of your vacation,” he says.

But it doesn’t have to be. You can take a few steps to fix or prevent a rental car lockout on your next trip.

First, call your rental company

Your car rental company may be able to get you back into the car quickly.

“With the modernization of cars, solving this problem for most of our vehicles is fairly easy,” says Nick Sorrentino, owner of Reno Tahoe Rental Car . “We can log on to the relevant app, unlock the vehicle and, in many cases, even start the vehicle.”

If not, the rental company will give you options, which usually involve calling a tow truck or locksmith.

Do companies keep spare keys?

Generally, rental car companies don’t keep spare keys. Kelly’s situation with Avis was not typical. “We only receive one set of keys,” says Avis spokesman James Tucker. Avis offers a lockout service through its emergency roadside assistance, but if you lose your key, expect to pay somewhere between $150 and $225 for a replacement, according to Avis.

Hertz also doesn’t keep duplicate keys on-site for most of its vehicles. If you signed up for its premium emergency roadside service, you can get a lost key service at no charge. Otherwise, Hertz charges a flat fee of $250 for a lost key.

Enterprise doesn’t keep spare keys. Instead, it gives drivers both keys attached to a ring. If you don’t buy Enterprise’s additional roadside protection coverage and you lose your keys, the company will charge you $58 for lockout services. It will also charge you for the cost of the tow if you choose to use its towing service, and replacement keys, which can vary based on tow distance and the type of car.

Don’t panic: The cost of a lost key might be covered

Kelly might have been covered if she had paid extra for Avis’s extended roadside assistance , which includes the services of a locksmith. Enterprise, which owns the National and Alamo brands, also offers roadside protection coverage for an extra charge, and covers lost keys and lockouts. Roadside assistance typically costs between $4 to $7 per day. But read the coverage carefully before buying it. Some roadside assistance plans don’t cover towing after an accident.

How to avoid surprise rental car charges

Her AAA membership would have reimbursed up to $150 for a locksmith , depending on her membership level. And if she had a Visa card, she might have also used its pay-per-use roadside assistance program .

Before deciding, review your options

There may be less-expensive options than the car rental company’s tow truck. Those include your credit card’s roadside assistance, your car insurance company or a membership, such as AAA. You may be able to get your car towed back to the rental location at a reduced rate. Travel insurance does not typically cover loss of your car rental keys, but it may provide roadside assistance for your rental car.

5 signs you have the wrong travel insurance

These steps could make a lockout a nonevent. They did for Sajeed Javed when he recently rented a car in New York.

“I couldn’t for the life of me find the keys,” says Javed, who runs an automotive site . “I kept calm and looked in all the obvious places and then all the less-obvious ones. Unfortunately, there was no sign of the keys anywhere.”

Javed called his car rental company. Fortunately, he paid extra for roadside protection.

“My rental company was very helpful, keeping me in the loop about how soon they’d be able to organize a new set for me,” he says. “They even offered to organize transport to help me get to my meeting that morning, which was helpful.”

How to rent a car overseas

How to prevent a loss or lockout

The best way to handle the loss of your car rental keys or a lockout is to avoid it in the first place.

Make the keys harder to lose. “Attach a big, noticeable lanyard or keychain to them,” says William Baldwin, who publishes an automotive blog . “Ideally, something that will make a noise when dropped.”

Separate the keys. Some car rental companies will give you two keys on the same ring. That has always puzzled frequent car rental customers like Harvey Moshman, a TV producer from Los Angeles. “Separate the keys and give the spare to the other driver,” he says.

Get an AirTag. “Travelers should attach the tracker to the rental car keys as soon as they get them,” advises Simon Mawdsley, co-director of Grand Prix Grand Tours . “That way, as soon as the keys go missing, you can quickly check the app to find them.”

Like Kelly, I’ve lost my car rental keys before, but I fortunately found them before having to call the car rental company. The worst part of the experience is that initial feeling of helplessness and despair. You imagine the towing bill and the invoice for the new key and you wonder how much of your vacation you’ll lose.

Helping you cope with that anxiety is above my pay grade as a travel columnist, but this should help: A vast majority of lockouts end with the renter back in the car sooner than they thought and at minimal cost — or none at all.

Love this app!

I used Turo for the first time on a recent trip to Kauai (Sept 2021). I couldn’t find a single rental car on the island a few months before our trip and asked friends for advice and one told me there was an app for cars similar to vrbo for houses. I set up my profile and found a car I liked, and then everything went very smoothly on our trip. I now would likely prefer this to a traditional car rental service, or at least will always compare prices and availability in locations with both rentals and Turo. I wish I’d thought of this! The only improvement I can think of is pick up and drop off. We paid extra to have the car brought to our hotel versus picking it up at the airport. We didn’t need it for our entire trip and it was a few hundred dollars a day, so thought we’d save some money. If the “host” lives closer to your drop-off location than the airport, not sure why it needs to cost more. Would seem better for them as well. So seems like there could be up front discussion of location and then fees set only if the requested unique drop-off is less convenient for the host. Also, our host seemed to not be clear that we’d also paid for pick-up at the hotel (although very clear to me in the booking details) and it created a lot of back and forth messages on date of pick up. App needs to make sure host is clear on locations to avoid hassle for the guest when trying to enjoy vacation.

The Way it Should Be Done

I’m not sure why renting a car before the Turo app was seemingly in the dark ages, but today renting a car through their platform shows that it should have been down this way from the start. You choose the exact car you want, not from a fleet of “Ford Explorer or comparable”. It’s way cheaper than the big guys, by a lot, and this is still including the highest Turo insurance that you can get which covers everything. Many times you can get unlimited miles if you have a lengthy trip. Hosts at this point have many trips under their belts and have reliable reviews that you can trust. Very importantly, the host knows the car and will demo everything in detail instead of just handing over the keys and sending you on your way. Also, while you can get the car delivered, I have not been inconvenienced by a short Uber trip to pick the car up, being that there are now endless hosts using the platform which means a car is never more than a 10 minute drive away. My personal car Is about a decade old and I’d rather not put the wear and tear on it, but I also don’t want a new car payment. My company pays me pretty well per mile when I travel, so using Turo once a month for my longer trips definitely pays off and I don’t mind spending the money being that it really is so affordable compared to chain rental companies. All in all, Turo has really changed the game and you should give it a try!

Great Customer Service

Due to unforeseen circumstances resulting from life & the pandemic, I needed transportation for work. Turo Agents & Hosts have consistently taken care of my car rental needs. I’ve been a Turo renter on and off since 2017; moreso now since 2021 as I needed the vehicle to commute from Houston to Dallas for work and due to my responsibilities as a Praise & Worship leader at LOV Nation Church. I am pleased with the service and have been made to feel safe in every vehicle I rent. It is clear that Turo cares about the customer’s health & safety as they appear to have made it apart of their guideline for hosts to follow COVID cleaning procedures in order to list any vehicle. I am also pleased with how Turo does everything in their power to resolve issues if they may arise. I highly recommend using Turo. Their rates are competitive, and, thought they shift according to the market like everywhere else, have been at least 30% cheaper than using Hertz or Enterprise Rent-a-car. Of course, you may have your mileage trade offs since not every Host on Turo offers unlimited miles. Just be calculated on those types of rental parameters to ensure that rental best fits your need or adjust your life according for the duration of your trip. I enjoy this service. Thank You Turo and to every person who has graciously hosted me. I look forward to enjoying renting more vehicles as time goes on for leisure & business! I highly recommend using Turo!

How to rent a car with points and miles

Key takeaways.

  • Booking a car rental with points or miles can make sense if rental prices are high or if you find a good deal.
  • If you have a card that is part of a flexible credit card rewards program, you can book a rental car through the travel portal just like you would book a flight or hotel.
  • You can also typically use rewards earned in airline or hotel loyalty programs toward car rentals.

Although many analysts predicted that post-COVID “revenge travel” would peak in 2022, ongoing research suggests consumers are still prioritizing spending money on travel. According to a 2023 Bankrate survey , planned leisure travel was up from 2022 — even as many Americans still had less than three months of emergency savings in the bank.

This demand has led to record-breaking revenue for the U.S. car rental industry, according to Auto Rental News data . Although rental car companies were hit hard in 2020, total revenue soared to $36.1 billion in 2022 and $38.3 billion in 2023. But while this is great news for the rental car industry, it often means higher car rental prices and lower availability for travelers.

Usually, I almost never recommend using rewards for rental car bookings since you can almost always find a rental car deal through AutoSlash, Hotwire, Kayak or Priceline if you don’t care what company you’re renting from. When these kinds of deals don’t exist, however, here’s what you need to know about booking a car rental with miles or points.

How to book a car rental with miles or points

Airline miles and points.

Nearly every airline has a frequent flyer program that has the option to redeem your points or miles for rental car bookings. The exchange value of airline miles for rental cars typically isn’t as good as using miles for booking flights, but it is an option. It might also be worthwhile if you’re earning more miles than you can spend on flights through a co-branded airline credit card .

Flexible credit card rewards

If you have a card that is part of a flexible credit card rewards program, like American Express Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards , you can book a rental car through the travel portal just like you would for booking a flight or hotel. Redemptions are still tied to the cost of the rental but will vary based on the rewards redemption value of your particular card.

Car rental loyalty programs

If you frequently rent cars through any of the major car rental companies like Hertz, Avis or National, you should be earning rewards in the rental company’s own loyalty program. Just like airline or hotel loyalty programs, these programs are free to join.

For example, if you join the Avis PreferredⓇ program, you’ll earn 1X points per dollar spent on rentals and 2X points per dollar spent on accessories (with a minimum of 100 points per booking), and you can redeem your points for free rental days starting at 700 points. Accessories can be redeemed for 250 points each, and additional points may be available through promotions — such as those that earn you an extra 100 points for booking within the first three months of joining — or through the company’s higher-tier Preferred PlusⓇ and President’s Club programs.

If you happen to have a stash of car rental rewards, what better time to use them than the present? Likewise, if you don’t have a car rental loyalty account, it’s a good time to join since you’ll be earning lots of rewards if you wind up paying for a car rental.

When should you rent a car with points or miles?

If you’re the kind of rewards collector who likes to maximize the cents per mile you get when redeeming rewards, car rental redemptions might not be for you. Rental redemptions are almost always linked to rental prices, so if prices are high, you’ll have to pay a lot of rewards.

Value, however, isn’t always only about the numbers. If you really need a car rental and can’t afford to pay a higher rental rate, using points or miles for a car rental may still be a good value to you.

Tips for booking a car rental with points and miles

Alternatives like Turo or locally-owned rental companies may offer more favorable rates, but if you’re looking to book a car for upcoming travel, my top tip is to make your plans sooner rather than later. If you decide to pay for a car rental, most companies don’t require a deposit and have very liberal cancellation rules.

It doesn’t hurt to book a paid reservation as far in advance as possible, then cancel or change the booking as you get your flights and accommodation sorted. If you’re booking with points or miles, you’ll still want to book as far in advance as possible, but make sure you know the company’s rules, as some rewards programs won’t reinstate your rewards if you have to cancel your rental.

You’ll also want to double-check the rules of your credit card rental insurance if you’re planning on using the primary or secondary rental car coverage that’s offered with many credit cards . Most credit cards only provide this insurance benefit when you use the corresponding credit card to pay for the rental. Do some research in advance to see what your credit card offers.

The bottom line

Booking car rentals with your points or miles may be worth considering when rental rates are high. Though using credit card rewards for car rental bookings isn’t always the best way to maximize redemption value for your points and miles, redeeming rewards for a rental may still be of great value to you if covering the cost of a car makes your trip possible.

How to Hire a Car Service Near You for Your Wedding: Your Ultimate Guide

Bride and groom kissing in the back of car on wedding day

  • She has been published in a wide array of lifetsyle-oriented publications including SELF and Allure.
  • Lauren is a proud graduate of Syracuse University's SI Newhouse School of Public Communication.

Let's face it: It's easy to get caught up in the throes of wedding planning , which makes it easy to overlook critical details such as your transportation . So, let this be your reminder to hire a car service for your wedding, stat. However, with so many vehicle and vendor options to choose from, selecting your vendor is no easy feat. To help make the process a bit easier, we've compiled the ultimate guide on how to hire a car service near you for your wedding, including need-to-know information and expert tips.

In this article:

How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Wedding Car?

How to hire a wedding car near you, tips for hiring a car for a wedding.

Wondering how much wedding car hire prices are? We've got you covered with expert insight from Thomas Waters, owner and event planner at The Renaissance in Richmond, Virginia. Like most wedding day expenditures, wedding car hire rates "will vary depending on various factors, including location, availability and peak times," he tells The Knot. For example, if you're looking to hire a luxury car for your wedding, it can cost somewhere between $140 to $180 in the Richmond area, per Waters. He continues, telling The Knot, "It's important to remember that they may also have a four-hour minimum, if not more."

You may also be curious as to how much it costs to hire a vintage wedding car—and we've tapped Waters to weigh in. "Vintage cars, especially rarer ones, will generally cost more per hour," he explains. Additionally, "In larger cities, expect to pay potentially hundreds of dollars an hour." Limousines , on the other hand, tend to be less expensive. Per Thomas, you can expect to pay between $80 and $140 an hour, give or take, depending on your specific location. "The rate varies and will depend on the size and age of the car, as well as the body style."

Additionally, keep in mind that the total cost also depends on whether or not you are booking a chauffeur along with the car. "With many car hires," says Waters, "you'll understandably be required to have it chauffeured, and I can't overstate how much our couples value the convenience of having a professional driver who knows the roads well." Conversely, if you're looking to hire a getaway car for your exit, Waters recommends booking an exotic car. While you can expect to spend less, you will 1) need to drive the car and 2) be responsible for picking it up and dropping it off.

Find all the vendors you need

"How do I find wedding car hires near me?" you may be wondering—and you're not alone. Enter The Knot Vendor Marketplace , your one-stop shop for researching wedding cars for hire! Our user-friendly platform allows couples to search for wedding transportation companies based on location and budget. Plus, to make the process all the more seamless, couples can even filter by transportation type (i.e., classic and exotic, limos and more).

Booking your wedding transportation is one of the most important—albeit often overlooked—parts of the wedding planning process. Ahead, we've rounded up expert-approved tips for hiring a car for your wedding.

1. Do your research

Before jumping full-speed ahead into booking your wedding transportation, it's key to do your research. Fortunately, The Knot Vendor Marketplace makes this process as simple and stress-free as possible. As previously mentioned, this platform allows couples to search wedding transportation companies based on location, budget and vehicle type.

2. Book early

It's always a good idea to reserve your wedding transportation early—especially if you have a particular car in mind. "Remember," says Waters, "demand will be highest on a Saturday, especially when you're competing with prom season." Additionally, " Peak wedding season , in general, will mean that the inventory will run low quickly."

3. Ask questions

Not asking your potential wedding transportation company questions is a major mistake that's all too common. Of course, you'll want to double-check that the vendor is available on your wedding date—and that they have your desired vehicle in their fleet—but don't be afraid to get into the nitty-gritty, either. For example, you may consider asking about driver attire, cleaning fees, food and beverage regulations and the cancellation policy.

4. Seek referrals and references

Prior to booking your wedding transportation vendor, Waters recommends relying on references, customer reviews and planner recommendations. What's more, he says, "You want a reputable company that offers great cars, proper insurance and reliable customer service." As such, your wedding transportation company "should be ready and willing to walk you through the contract and answer any questions you may have."

5. Finalize logistics and go over your timeline

Per Waters, "It stands to reason that the price will begin to creep up the longer you need the car, so run through the timeline thoroughly to make sure you've taken everything into account." For example, "You'll want to consider the routes being driven, if the car is needed during photographers and whether they'll stay to drive you after you exit the festivities." While this all may seem overwhelming, "a great wedding planner will be able to coordinate this for you and anticipate how long a rental will be necessary. "

BONUS: Consult with your wedding planner

"Your wedding day aesthetic can certainly be extended to your car hire," says Waters. As such, he recommends "connect[ing] with your wedding planner to discuss options and what could be the best overall fit for your wedding day look." On a related note, "If you have a particular vision you'd like to see through, look into a company's policies and pricing for decorating the car." Pro tip: You may also want to consider adding this clause to your wedding transportation contract !

More things to know on your first drive

Do I need to take an airport shuttle to get to the Hertz rental counter at Hertz Car Rental - Kalispell Airport?

Shuttle is not offered. After exiting Baggage Claim doors, turn right and walk to the end of the building. Turn right and follow the chain link fence which will lead you to the car lot.

Do I need to have a driver’s license to rent a car from Hertz Car Rental - Kalispell Airport?

A valid driver's license issued from your state or country of residence must be presented at the time of rental.  The driver's license must be valid for the entire rental period. If the driver's license is in a language other than English, and the rental is in the United States, an International Driver's Permit is recommended. In all cases, a valid driver's license issued from your home country must be provided, whether or not you possess an International Driver's Permit.  You will not be allowed to rent a Hertz vehicle with only an International Driver's Permit.

International customers renting in the U.S. are also required to present a valid international-issued driver’s license at the time of rent and a valid passport in the same name, as a second form of identification.

Mobile/Digital Driver License

A mobile or digital driver’s license does not replace a valid physical driver’s license and Hertz customers will still need to supply their hard copy license until further notice.

Rental of a 15-passenger van in California requires a commercial driver’s license to transport a non-profit group or for commercial use. The commercial driver’s license requirement does not apply to personal use. 15- passenger vans may not be used to transport passengers for hire.

Does Hertz Car Rental - Kalispell Airport have any fees and surcharges? Where can I find that information?

Does hertz car rental - kalispell airport have a car rental ‘grace period’.

Rentals have a grace period of 29 minutes.

Optional coverages do not have hourly charges/grace period, but are charged as a full day.

Extra hour charges will be incurred at the 30 minute mark if the vehicle is returned more than 29 minutes past the original rental time.

Do I need to take out insurance on my rental car from Hertz Car Rental - Kalispell Airport?

If renting in California:

Hertz provides no liability protection under the terms of the Rental Agreement to the renter from claims of injury by others against you resulting from an accident. Your personal/business insurance may cover your liability. Exceptions : Hertz will provide primary liability protection up to the statutory minimum limits to international customers (driver's license indicates an address outside the USA) renting in California. Please also refer to Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS) below.

If renting in Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, South Carolina, Virginia, or West Virginia:

Upon signing the Rental Agreement, Hertz provides primary liability protection. However, such protection is generally no more than the minimum limits required by individual state law. See Financial Responsibility Limits by State.

If renting in any other state in the U.S.A.:

Hertz' liability protection is secondary to any other insurance coverage available to you. If you do not have liability insurance and/or the limits of liability of the insurance coverage available to you are not sufficient to cover claims by others against you, and Hertz, as the vehicle owner, provides liability protection due to an accident, you will indemnify Hertz for any and all payments made.

However, Hertz makes available additional liability protection, which is primary, if the optional Liability Insurance Supplement, LIS, is purchased.

Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS)

Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS) provides coverage for you and other authorized operators of your rental vehicle for third party claims.

LIS is primary protection to customer’s personal policy and provides the first $1,000,000.00 of combined bodily injury and/or property damage protection for each occurrence regardless of the state in which the accident occurs. On rentals in California and Florida the maximum combined single limit is $2,000,000.00 for liability protection only.

LIS provides up to $1,000,000.00 of Uninsured/Underinsured protection for bodily injury sustained while driving the rental vehicle.

There are some exclusions to this coverage, which we feel you should know. Under LIS, in the event of an accident, you will not be protected for third party liability:

  • If LIS is not accepted at commencement of the rental or if you fail to pay the charges for LIS.
  • If you or an authorized driver operated the rental vehicle in violation of the Rental Agreement, including, but not limited to, operating the vehicle while legally intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other absorbed elements; permit the use of the vehicle by anyone other than authorized operators; for purposes that could properly be charged as a felony, to tow or push anything, or in a speed contest or for driver training.
  • If the vehicle or LIS coverage was obtained by fraud or misrepresentation.

LIS is third party liability coverage only, except where permitted by law or pertaining to Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage . LIS does not cover personal injury to you or any authorized operator of the rental vehicle or to your or their family members who are related by blood, marriage or adoption and reside in your or their household.

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)

In most states, in the event of any other loss or damage to the car, regardless of fault, your financial responsibility extends to the full value of the car at the time of rental, less its salvage value, plus expenses for towing, storage impound fees, an administrative fee and a reasonable charge for loss of use. If your responsibility differs in the state in which you rent, it will be stated in Paragraph 4, of the Rental Agreement. In California, in the event of any loss or damage to the car regardless of fault, your financial responsibility will in no event exceed the fair market value, plus actual charges for towing, storage, impound fees, and an administrative fee. In California and Nevada, your responsibility for loss or damage to the car from vandalism unrelated to theft will not exceed $500.00 in California and $2,500.00 in Nevada and you are not responsible for theft, regardless of purchasing LDW, unless the theft results from your fault.. In Illinois, your responsibility for loss or damage for any cause other than theft is limited to $15,500.00. Loss or damage related to theft is limited to $2,000.00, unless the theft results from your fault.  In New York, your financial responsibility shall not exceed (i) the actual and reasonable costs that Hertz incurs to repair the car, including costs for towing, storage and impound fees or that Hertz would have incurred if the car was repaired or (ii) the fair market value of the car immediately before the damages occurred, as determined by the applicable market for the retail saleof the car less disposal proceeds. Your responsibility for theft of the car shall not exceed the reasonable costs incurred by Hertz for loss due to theft up to its fair market value, if it is established that you or any authorized operator failed to exercise reasonable care or aided or abetted in the theft.

  • However Hertz offers Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) an optional service, which for an additional daily charge relieves you of all financial responsibility for the loss or damage to the rental car, whether or not you have insurance to cover such damage, provided the car is used in accordance with the terms of the Rental Agreement.
  • The cost of LDW may vary depending on location or car type and is charged per each full or partial day of rental.

F.Y.I. – You are under no obligation to purchase LDW or any other optional service as a condition of rental. Your own personal insurance may provide protection for loss or damage to the rental vehicle depending on the state in which you live and the type of policy you have. Also, various credit card companies provide cardholders with some degree of damage protection providing you use their credit card for the rental and decline the optional LDW offered by Hertz at time of rental. The coverage and limits vary. Your policy or credit card coverage should be thoroughly checked for the specific terms and conditions associated with rental vehicles. Remember, most credit card insurance is supplemental, which means it will only reimburse you for loss or damages over and above what is covered by any other insurance you may have and will not cover you for any damage, regardless of cause, if you accept LDW.

Adding LDW after car is on rental: You may not change the option once the rental has begun, without returning the car and starting a new rental agreement.  This will result in the contract being closed out and charges being assessed for the time the vehicle is kept at least 1-day minimum, and a new rental contract will begin.

Cancellation of LDW - New York rentals only:

On New York rentals only, LDW may be cancelled at no charge, within 24 hours of its purchase provided the renter (i) has rented the car for 2 or more days; (ii) appears in person at any Hertz rental location with the car, which shall be subject to inspection.

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), offered in combination with PEC, allows you to elect accidental death and accidental medical expense coverage for yourself and your passengers during the rental period of the vehicle.

PAI coverage:

Total benefits for any one accident are limited to $225,000.00 and are payable in addition to any other coverage for which you or your passengers are eligible. However, your benefits provided by other coverage may be affected by the PAI benefits. Rentals originating in the State of Mississippi do not have a single accident limit of $225,000.00.

If this coverage is accepted, the benefits for you apply to all accidental injuries during your rental period, regardless of whether you are actually in the car. Your passengers are also covered, but only for incidents occurring while they occupy the Hertz rental car.

Benefits are not paid for any loss caused directly or indirectly by:

The renter shall be deemed to have converted the rental vehicle whenever the rental vehicle is not returned to Hertz by the return date or by the extended return date. This is a summary only and other restrictions may apply.

Personal Effects Coverage (PEC)

Personal Effects Coverage (PEC), offered in combination with PAI, is an option that insures against risk of loss or damage to help protect your personal belongings while renting from Hertz. By electing PEC you will be insured throughout the entire rental period. PEC is insurance protection and pays in addition to any other policy you may have (such as a Homeowner’s policy). However, your benefits provided by other coverage may be affected by the PEC benefit. PEC insurance coverage includes those personal effects owned by you and those members of your immediate family traveling with you during the rental period who are permanent residents of your household. PEC does not extend to non-family members traveling with you.

PEC applies to personal effects only and not to car equipment. The following are examples of items NOT covered by the PEC:

  • Automobiles and their equipment, motorcycles, boats, motors or other accessories, add-ons, instruments)
  • household furniture, currency, coins, stamps, deeds, bullion, securities, tickets, documents
  • CB radios, radar detectors, guns, merchandise for sale or fine art
  • Contact lenses, artificial teeth and limbs
  • Perishables

Personal effects not covered loss by mysterious disappearance, nor does it cover::

  • Loss or damage caused by wear and tear, gradual deterioration, moths, vermin, inherent vice or damage sustained due to any process or while actually being worked upon and resulting there from, or while in the care, custody or control of any common carrier.
  • Loss by nuclear reaction, radiation or radioactive contamination.
  • Loss caused by any act of war.
  • Loss or damage due to theft unless reported by Police.

Also, PEC does not cover:

  • Loss caused by war or any act of war;
  • Loss by nuclear reaction, radiation or radioactive contamination;
  • Any loss or damage sustained to property while in the care, custody or control of any common carrier;
  • Loss or damage due to theft unless reported to Police.

If loss or damages occur, completion of claim form must accompany claim. Forms are available at all Hertz corporate locations.

Please note that PAI and PEC are not available separately and must be taken in combination.

What if I return my car late to Hertz Car Rental - Kalispell Airport?

Money saving trends are constantly popping up on social media - but one in particular has been gaining huge amounts of attention.

Created accidentally by a comedian, loud budgeting is breaking down the taboo of speaking about money.

The idea is based on being firmer/more vocal about your financial boundaries in social situations and setting out what you are happy to spend your money on, instead of "Keeping up with the Joneses".

On TikTok alone, videos published under the hashtag #loudbudgeting have garnered more than 30 million views - and that figure is continuing to climb.

We spoke to Lukas Battle - the 26-year-old who unintentionally created the trend as part of a comedy sketch.

Based in New York, he came up with the term in a skit about the "quiet luxury" hype, which had spread online in 2023 inspired by shows like Succession.

The term was used for humble bragging about your wealth with expensive items that were subtle in their design - for example, Gwyneth Paltrow's  £3,900 moss green wool coat from The Row, which she wore during her ski resort trial...

"I was never a big fan of the quiet luxury trend, so I just kind of switched the words and wrote 'loud budgeting is in'. I'm tired of spending money and I don't want to pretend to be rich," Lukas said.

"That's how it started and then the TikTok comments were just obsessed with that original idea."

This was the first time he mentioned it...

Lukas explained that it wasn't about "being poor" but about not being afraid of sharing your financial limits and "what's profitable for you personally".

"It's not 'skip a coffee a day and you'll become a millionaire'."

While talking money has been seen as rude or taboo, he said it's something his generation is more comfortable doing.

"I've seen more debate around the topic and I think people are really intrigued and attracted by the idea," he said.

"It's just focusing your spending and time on things you enjoy and cutting out the things you might feel pressured to spend your money on."

He has incorporated loud budgeting into his own life, telling his friends "it's free to go outside" and opting for cheaper dinner alternatives.

"Having the terminology and knowing it's a trend helps people understand it and there's no awkward conversation around it," he said.

The trend has been a big hit with so-called American "finfluencers", or "financial influencers", but people in the UK have started practising it as well.

Mia Westrap has taken up loud budgeting by embarking on a no-buy year and sharing her finances with her 11.3k TikTok followers.

Earning roughly £2,100 a month, she spends around £1,200 on essentials, like rent, petrol and car insurance, but limits what else she can purchase.

Clothes, fizzy drinks, beauty treatments, makeup, dinners out and train tickets are just some things on her "red list".

The 26-year-old PHD student first came across the idea back in 2017, but decided to take up the challenge this year after realising she was living "pay check to pay check".

She said her "biggest fear" in the beginning was that her friends wouldn't understand what she was doing, but she found loud budgeting helped.

"I'm still trying my best to just go along with what everyone wants to do but I just won't spend money while we do it and my friends don't mind that, we don't make a big deal out of it," she said.

So far, she has been able to save £1,700, and she said talking openly about her money has been "really helpful".

"There's no way I could have got this far if I wasn't baring my soul to the internet about the money I have spent. It has been a really motivating factor."

Financial expert John Webb said loud budgeting has the ability to help many "feel empowered" and create a "more realistic" relationship with money.

"This is helping to normalise having open and honest conversations about finances," the consumer affair manager at Experien said.

"It can also reduce the anxiety some might have by keeping their financial worries to themselves."

However, he warned it's important to be cautious and to take the reality of life into consideration.

"It could cause troubles within friendship groups if they're not on the same page as you or have different financial goals," he said.

"This challenge isn't meant to stop you from having fun, but it is designed to help people become more conscious and intentional when it comes to money, and reduce the stigma around talking about it."

Rightmove's keyword tool shows Victorian-era houses are the most commonly searched period properties, with people drawn to their ornate designs and features.

Georgian and Edwardian-style are second and third respectively, followed by Tudor properties. Regency ranked in fifth place.

Rightmove property expert Tim Bannister said: "Home hunters continue to be captivated by the character and charm of properties that we see in period dramas.

"Victorian homes remain particularly popular, characterised by their historic charm, solid construction, and spacious interiors. You'll often find Victorian houses in some of the most desirable locations which include convenient access to schools and transport links."

Job interview mistakes

On Wednesday we reported on a new £12m ad from PG Tips in response to it falling behind rivals such as Twinings, Yorkshire Tea and Tetley....

We had lots of comments like this...

How on earth was the PG Tips advert so expensive? I prefer Tetley tea, PG Tips is never strong enough flavour for me. Shellyleppard
The reason for the sales drop with PG Tips could be because they increased the price and reduced the quantity of bags from 240 to 180 - it's obvious. Royston

And then this question which we've tried to answer below...

Why have PG Tips changed from Pyramid shape tea bags, to a square? Sam

Last year PG Tips said it was changing to a square bag that left more room for leaves to infuse, as the bags wouldn't fold over themselves.

We reported on data showing how downsizing could save you money for retirement - more than £400,000, in some regions, by swapping four beds for two.

Some of our readers shared their experiences...

We are downsizing and moving South so it's costing us £100k extra for a smaller place, all money from retirement fund. AlanNorth
Interesting read about downsizing for retirement. We recently did this to have the means to retire early at 52. However, we bought a house in the south of France for the price of a flat in our town in West Sussex. Now living the dream! OliSarah

How much should we pay for food?

Executive chef at London's two-Michelin-starred Ikoyi, Jeremy Chan, raised eyebrows when he suggested to the Money blog that Britons don't pay enough for restaurant food.

Ikoyi, the 35th best restaurant in the world, charges £320 for its tasting menu.

"I don't think people pay enough money for food, I think we charge too little, [but] we want to always be accessible to as many people as possible, we're always trying our best to do that," he said, in a piece about his restaurant's tie up with Uber Eats...

We had this in...

Are they serious? That is two weeks' worth of food shopping for me, if the rich can afford this "tasting menu" then they need to be taxed even more by the government, it's just crazy! Steve T
If the rate of pay is proportionate to the vastly overpriced costs of the double Michelin star menu, I would gladly peel quail eggs for four-hour stints over continuing to be abused as a UK supply teacher. AndrewWard
Does this two-star Michelin star chef live in the real world? Who gives a toss if he stands and peels his quails eggs for four hours, and he can get the best turbot from the fishmonger fresh on a daily basis? It doesn't justify the outrageous price he is charging for his tasting menu. Topaztraveller
Chefs do make me laugh, a steak is just a steak, they don't make the meat! They just cook it like the rest of us, but we eat out because we can't be bothered cooking! StevieGrah

Finally, many of you reacted to this feature on common mistakes in job interviews...

Those 10 biggest mistakes people make in interviews is the dumbest thing I've ever read. They expect all that and they'll be offering a £25k a year job. Why wouldn't I want to know about benefits and basic sick pay? And also a limp handshake? How's that relevant to how you work? Jre90

Others brought their own tips...

Whenever I go for an interview I stick to three points: 1. Be yourself 2. Own the interview 3. Wear the clothes that match the job you are applying Kevin James Blakey

From Sunday, eligible working parents of children from nine-months-old in England will be able to register for access to up to 15 free hours of government-funded childcare per week.

This will then be granted from September.

Check if you're eligible  here  - or read on for our explainer on free childcare across the UK.

Three and four year olds

In England, all parents of children aged three and four in England can claim 15 hours of free childcare per week, for 1,140 hours (38 weeks) a year, at an approved provider.

This is a universal offer open to all.

It can be extended to 30 hours where both parents (or the sole parent) are in work, earn the weekly minimum equivalent of 16 hours at the national minimum or living wage, and have an income of less than £100,000 per year.

Two year olds

Previously, only parents in receipt of certain benefits were eligible for 15 hours of free childcare.

But, as of last month, this was extended to working parents.

This is not a universal offer, however.

A working parent must earn more than £8,670 but less than £100,000 per year. For couples, the rule applies to both parents.

Nine months old

In September, this same 15-hour offer will be extended to working parents of children aged from nine months. From 12 May, those whose children will be at least nine months old on 31 August can apply to received the 15 hours of care from September.

From September 2025

The final change to the childcare offer in England will be rolled out in September 2025, when eligible working parents of all children under the age of five will be able to claim 30 hours of free childcare a week.

In some areas of Wales, the Flying Start early years programme offers 12.5 hours of free childcare for 39 weeks, for eligible children aged two to three. The scheme is based on your postcode area, though it is currently being expanded.

All three and four-year-olds are entitled to free early education of 10 hours per week in approved settings during term time under the Welsh government's childcare offer.

Some children of this age are entitled to up to 30 hours per week of free early education and childcare over 48 weeks of the year. The hours can be split - but at least 10 need to be used on early education.

To qualify for this, each parent must earn less than £100,000 per year, be employed and earn at least the equivalent of working 16 hours a week at the national minimum wage, or be enrolled on an undergraduate, postgraduate or further education course that is at least 10 weeks in length.

All three and four-year-olds living in Scotland are entitled to at least 1,140 hours per year of free childcare, with no work or earnings requirements for parents.

This is usually taken as 30 hours per week over term time (38 weeks), though each provider will have their own approach.

Some households can claim free childcare for two-year-olds. To be eligible you have to be claiming certain benefits such as Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance or Universal Credit, or have a child that is in the care of their local council or living with you under a guardianship order or kinship care order.

Northern Ireland

There is no scheme for free childcare in Northern Ireland. Some other limited support is available.

Working parents can access support from UK-wide schemes such as tax credits, Universal Credit, childcare vouchers and tax-free childcare.

Aside from this, all parents of children aged three or four can apply for at least 12.5 hours a week of funded pre-school education during term time. But over 90% of three-year-olds have a funded pre-school place - and of course this is different to childcare.

What other help could I be eligible for?

Tax-free childcare  - Working parents in the UK can claim up to £500 every three months (up to £2,000 a year) for each of their children to help with childcare costs.

If the child is disabled, the amount goes up to £1,000 every three months (up to £4,000 a year).

To claim the benefit, parents will need to open a tax-free childcare account online. For every 80p paid into the account, the government will top it up by 20p.

The scheme is available until the September after the child turns 11.

Universal credit  - Working families on universal credit can claim back up to 85% of their monthly childcare costs, as long as the care is paid for upfront. The most you can claim per month is £951 for one child or £1,630 for two or more children.

Tax credits -  People claiming working tax credit can get up to 70% of what they pay for childcare if their costs are no more than £175 per week for one child or £300 per work for multiple children.

Two big economic moments dominated the news agenda in Money this week - interest rates and GDP.

As expected, the Bank of England held the base rate at 5.25% on Wednesday - but a shift in language was instructive about what may happen next.

Bank governor Andrew Bailey opened the door to a summer cut to 5%, telling reporters that an easing of rates at the next Monetary Policy Committee meeting on 20 June was neither ruled out nor a fait accompli.

More surprisingly, he suggested that rate cuts, when they start, could go deeper "than currently priced into market rates".

He refused to be drawn on what that path might look like - but markets had thought rates could bottom out at 4.5% or 4.75% this year, and potentially 3.5% or 4% next.

"To make sure that inflation stays around the 2% target - that inflation will neither be too high nor too low - it's likely that we will need to cut Bank rate over the coming quarters and make monetary policy somewhat less restrictive over the forecast period," Mr Bailey said.

You can read economics editor Ed Conway's analysis of the Bank's decision here ...

On Friday we discovered the UK is no longer in recession.

Gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.6% between January and March, the Office for National Statistics said.

This followed two consecutive quarters of the economy shrinking.

The data was more positive than anticipated.

"Britain is not just out of recession," wrote Conway. "It is out of recession with a bang."

The UK has seen its fastest growth since the tailend of the pandemic - and Conway picked out three other reasons for optimism.

1/ An economic growth rate of 0.6% is near enough to what economists used to call "trend growth". It's the kind of number that signifies the economy growing at more or less "normal" rates.

2/ 0.6% means the UK is, alongside Canada, the fastest-growing economy in the G7 (we've yet to hear from Japan, but economists expect its economy to contract in the first quarter).

3/ Third, it's not just gross domestic product that's up. So too is gross domestic product per head - the number you get when you divide our national income by every person in the country. After seven years without any growth, GDP per head rose by 0.4% in the first quarter.

GDP per head is a more accurate yardstick for the "feelgood factor", said Conway - perhaps meaning people will finally start to feel better off.

Loaves of bread have been recalled from shelves in Japan after they were found to contain the remains of a rat.

Production of the bread in Tokyo has been halted after parts of a "small animal" were found by at least two people.

Pasco Shikishima Corp, which produces the bread, said 104,000 packages have been recalled as it apologised and promised compensation.

A company representative told Sky News's US partner network, NBC News, that a "small black rat" was found in the bread. No customers were reported to have fallen ill as a result of ingesting the contaminated bread.

"We deeply apologise for the serious inconvenience and trouble this has caused to our customers, suppliers, and other concerned parties," the spokesman said.

Pasco added in a separate statement that "we will do our utmost to strengthen our quality controls so that this will never happen again. We ask for your understanding and your co-operation."

Japanese media reports said at least two people who bought the bread in the Gunma prefecture, north-west of Tokyo, complained to the company about finding a rodent in the bread.

Record levels of shoplifting appear to be declining as fewer shopkeepers reported thefts last year, new figures show.

A survey by the Office for National Statistics shows 26% of retailers experienced customer theft in 2023, down from a record high of 28% in 2022.

This comes despite a number of reports suggesting shoplifting is becoming more frequent.

A  separate ONS finding , which used police crime data, showed reports of shoplifting were at their highest level in 20 years in 2023, with law enforcements logging 430,000 instances of the crime.

Let's get you up to speed on the biggest business news of the past 24 hours.

A privately owned used-car platform is circling Cazoo Group, its stricken US-listed rival, which is on the brink of administration.

Sky News has learnt that Motors.co.uk is a leading contender to acquire Cazoo's marketplace operation, which would include its brand and intellectual property assets.

The process to auction the used-car platform's constituent parts comes after it spent tens of millions of pounds on sponsorship deals in football, snooker and darts in a rapid attempt to gain market share.

The owner of British Airways has reported a sharp rise in profits amid soaring demand for trips and a fall in the cost of fuel.

International Airlines Group said its operating profit for the first three months of the year was €68m (£58.5m) - above expectations and up from €9m (£7.7m) during the same period in 2023.

The company, which also owns Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling, said earnings had soared thanks to strong demand, particularly over the Easter holidays.

The prospect of a strike across Tata Steel's UK operations has gained further traction after a key union secured support for industrial action.

Community, which has more than 3,000 members, said 85% voted in favour of fighting the India-owned company's plans for up to 2,800 job losses, the majority of them at the country's biggest steelworks in Port Talbot, South Wales.

Tata confirmed last month it was to press ahead with the closure of the blast furnaces at the plant, replacing them with electric arc furnaces to reduce emissions and costs.

In doing so, the company rejected an alternative plan put forward by the Community, GMB and Unite unions that, they said, would raise productivity and protect jobs across the supply chain.

Key testimony so far from witnesses in Chad Daybell trial

By emily ashcraft, ksl.com | posted - april 30, 2024 at 5:01 p.m., various angles of the ada county courtroom are shown via livestream during chad daybell's murder trial on thursday. daybell is charged with the murders of jj vallow, tylee ryan and tammy daybell. (judge steven w. boyce via youtube).

Estimated read time: 6-7 minutes

BOISE — The 18 jurors, 12 of which will decide the fate of Chad Daybell in his murder trial, have heard testimony from prosecution witnesses over 13 days.

Chad Daybell is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Lori Vallow Daybell's children — 7-year-old Joshua "JJ" Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan — and his former wife, Tammy Daybell. He is also charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder of each of the victims, grand theft and two counts of insurance fraud.

Each of the deaths occurred on separate dates in September and October of 2019. The police investigation that led to the charges began in November of 2019 and was extensive — and has led to a lot of information available for attorneys and witnesses to discuss during the trial.

Tammy Daybell's body was exhumed and an autopsy was performed in December of 2019, and the children's bodies were found buried in Chad Daybell's backyard in June of 2020.

Here are highlights from some of the testimony from witnesses in the trial so far:

Funeral director had concerns

Steven Schultz, a funeral director and friend of Chad and Tammy Daybell, said he immediately had concerns about her death after going to the Daybell home in Salem, Idaho, to transport her body to Utah County. He cited Chad Daybell's rush to hold a funeral, his insistence that no autopsy be performed and his extreme religious beliefs as reasons for his concern. Schultz said while driving Tammy Daybell's body to Springville for the funeral, he asked Tammy Daybell's brother-in-law if he thought it might be murder.

Coroner changed Tammy Daybell's cause of death

Brenda Dye , the coroner for Fremont County, testified about her decision to change Tammy Daybell's cause of death from natural causes to homicide after her body was exhumed. She brought up inconsistencies in Chad Daybell's story, witnessing an autopsy months after her death showing her lungs were still full of pink foam, and finding out about Chad Daybell's new wife, investigations into her and her brother in Arizona, and her two missing children.

Friend testifies about 'castings'

Melanie Gibb, Lori Daybell's former best friend, testified about her, Chad Daybell and Lori Daybell doing "castings" for both Charles Vallow (Lori Daybell's then-husband) and Tammy Daybell before they died, to cast out evil spirits that Chad Daybell had said were inside them. She said she understood that if the castings were successful the people would die, but she did not think there would be any violence. Gibb also testified that Tylee and JJ were labeled as "dark" before they died.

Light and dark scale used outside of Chad and Lori Daybell's relationship

The light and dark scale often mentioned in messages with Lori Daybell was also brought up in a family chat with Chad and Tammy Daybell. Vincent Kaaiakamanu, with the Madison County Sheriff's Office, said one message sent from Tammy Daybell's account — which Chad Daybell often messaged from — labeled a child in a church class the couple had taught as "4.2 dark." Chad Daybell would label people light and dark, based on how much he believed a person had been taken over by evil, according to the officer and other witnesses.

Tylee and JJ's remains are found

Rexburg police detective Ray Hermosillo testified about finding JJ and Tylee's bodies, and photos were shown to the jurors of the state of the remains when they were found. JJ's body was found wrapped in plastic bags and duct tape, and Tylee's remains were burned and buried in a bucket.

Lori Daybell said she would 'take care of it'

When Colby Ryan, Lori Daybell's oldest child, asked his mother where his younger siblings were in November 2019, he testified that her response was: "I'll take care of it." He did not receive much communication from her after that, just an email months later telling him not to worry and that Jesus was on her side.

He also testified that when his stepfather, Charles Vallow, died, she called him at work and told him the man had died of a heart attack. He later learned that Vallow had actually been shot and killed by his uncle, Alex Cox. He described his mother's demeanor as "calm, unrattled," but said he was freaking out. He said shortly after the death, his mother told him she would be married again soon.

Real estate agent said Chad Daybell wanted to build home in his backyard

Ron Arnold, a real estate agent and neighbor of Chad Daybell, testified about meeting with him in March 2020 about building a home on his property. He said with all that he knows now about the children's bodies being buried there, he thinks there may have been a different motivation to build a house than simply to have a house to live in with his new wife.

'I'm not coming back'

Rexburg police detective Eric Wheeler testified about a video of the arrest of Chad Daybell the day the bodies were found in his backyard. The video shows him talking to his daughter, Emma, who lives kitty-corner from his home. He told his daughter "I'm not coming back" and proceeded to instruct her from the police car about how to pay the bills for his home and where his money was held.

'The angels are angry'

FBI agent Douglas Hart testified about texts between Chad Daybell and Lori Daybell, showing how he said they manipulated each other. He described texts from Aug. 8, 2019, depicting the couple's "first big fight" over a family vacation Chad Daybell was taking with his wife and other family members. Chad Daybell sent multiple texts telling Lori Daybell that he still loved her and it was "absolutely excruciating" to be cut off from her. But she did not send any texts in response.

About an hour later, after she still hadn't responded, he told her that her deceased grandfather was now there with him and her grandfather wanted him to "warn" her that she was now "unprotected." "The angels are angry that you are ignoring me," Chad Daybell texted. "I'm honestly not trying to manipulate you to respond. ... But they say you have cut me off, and the protection I built around your house is gone."

He said if she would just send him a thumbs-up emoji, then he could restore some of her "protection." Lori Daybell responded within about 10 minutes, telling him she loved him. Chad Daybell responded that the protection had been restored.

FBI agent uses phone data to show where Chad Daybell was when JJ and Tylee disappeared

The trial is scheduled to last until the end of May. Attorneys have indicated that eventually some of Chad Daybell's children will likely be called to the witness stand.

There are potentially two parts to the trial. If Daybell is found guilty, a second phase would be held with additional evidence and testimony, and the jurors would determine whether to impose the death penalty.

KSL.com is streaming the trial each day. The court is not holding the trial on Tuesday, but testimony will resume Wednesday morning.
