What is a safari hat?

What became the first safari hats were introduced in Asia and the Indian subcontinent through the 1800s as a pith helmet , also known as a safari helmet, sun helmet, topee, sola topee or topi.

These lightweight hats were made out of pith (a soft tissue found inside tree trunks) of the Indian sola tree and covered with a white cloth. They were first used by the European military, though they quickly realized that white hats made them an easy target, so started dyeing the white cloth with tea, to give them a distinctive khaki colour.

In the early 1900s, many Europeans in Asia started to were these pith helmets – and variations on them – as sun hats to protect their heads from the tropical sun. (They were even worn indoors by some who believed sunlight could penetrate their roof!) Understanding of the sun’s powers has evolved since then, as has fashion, and safari hats have developed to be an essential piece of kit when spending time outdoors in sunny terrain, whether on a trip taking in the desert, jungle, savanna, or, of course, safari.

And these days safari hats are being worn not just for protection from the sun, but as a fashion statement too, acceptable as an accessory of choice when going outdoors in any situation given.

What makes a great safari hat?

Whilst there’s a time and a place for the traditional pith helmet (fancy dress party, perhaps?), there is much choice for great safari hats around today – the question is, ‘what should I look for in a safari hat?’ We believe there are several things that you need to consider when buying a good safari hat:

The primary reason for wearing a hat on a daily basis – not just on safari – is to provide protection from the sun while you’re out and about. So just how much sun-protection will the hat provide? A waterproof safari hat is a good idea for a couple of reasons. The obvious one is that if it rains whilst you’re on safari and you don’t have shelter your hat can protect you from the rain. The other reason is that non-waterproof safari hats tend to be made out of cotton, which can start to smell a bit after a long day of usage. Buying a waterproof safari hat will make sure you’re protected from sun damage as well as from developing a bad odor.

They say that style and comfort must meet halfway, but if you must choose one over the other you should go for comfort. Why? Simply because you look the best when you feel most comfortable! And when on safari you can sometimes find yourself wearing a hat for the best part of a whole day, so it makes sense to ensure that any safari hat you buy is as comfortable as possible.

Most safari hats are made out of leather, rubber, cotton or man-made fabric. Which one you go for will depend on your personal preference, but make sure you choose a well-made safari hat that will last.  My personal choice is leather because in most cases leather hats will last a lifetime (and grow character) with proper care.

A Spot Of Safari Hat History

Pith helmets.

Emulating the old Victorian hunters and Theodore Roosevelt, you really ought to wear a pith helmet for a truly authentic African safari hat.

This hat (also known as a sun helmet, topee, sola topee, salacot or topi) was made of cork or the pith from the Sola plant of Asia and covered with cloth. It was designed to shade the head from the sun and was very popular with Europeans and Americans in tropical climates.

From 1870, the pith helmet was used by various military forces in the tropical colonies.

The helmet was made of pith with peaks front and rear, with holes for ventilation, a cloth covering and chin strap.

The pith helmet design is still prevalent as part military dress uniforms, though often decorated with spikes and plumes.

During the Anglo-Zulu war the British dyed their white cloth covering with tea, in an effort to camouflage. After this khaki coloured helmets became standard issue.

In the 1930s civilian life, the same pith helmet was worn (minus badges and regalia) to avoid sunstroke in the tropics by people of European origin, even indoors just in case the dangerous sun rays could penetrate the roof.

The potential dangers of the sun on the body was taken extremely seriously by the colonials in Africa and India. It was recommended they wear fabric 'neck curtains' hanging from the helmet to mid-back or even 3" thick spinal pads made of cork shavings.

This style was used by the British military in the Boer Wars when there was a shortage of cork helmets.

Other armies also used the slouch hat as uniform in the tropics and today the Australian military still wear them in parade uniform.

The terai hat is a version of the slouch hat which was worn by the Gurkhas and named after a region in Nepal.

As with the slouch hat, the terai was made of felt with pugree wound round the crown. Pugree is the Indian word for turban and refers to the pleated hat band.

Often the non-military terai hat brims were not pinned up on one side but just elevated on one side at a rakish angle.

The double terai hat is a slouch hat with a double thickness crown and brim designed for extra sun protection.

The principles of the 'terai' sun protection were used to design acceptably feminine hats for ladies and alternative styles for men similar to bowler hats or clerical hats.

Fast Forward To The Safari Hats Of The 1940s & 1950s

These were heydays of African hunting safaris when everyone who was anyone, disappeared into the African bush for months on end.

The felt slouch hat was still de riguer on African hunting safaris but the famous professional hunters of East Africa of this era injected a little Italian flair into their headwear.

Borsalino safari hats were practically mandatory headwear for all the professional hunters and consequently their hunting clients who were outfitted at Ahmed Brothers in Nairobi.

Borsalino was the leading manufacturer of the felt fedora hat from 1857 until the present. Originally furnished with a pugree hatband, the Borsalino safari hat has even been credited with saving the life of professional hunter Stan Lawrence Brown during an elephant attack. Tilley Hats Of The 1980s

This eminently practical hat - sun-proof, wind-proof, water-proof, insect-proof and with 'secret' pockets, found it's way from the sailing club into the African bush, primarily on the heads of photographic safari-goers.

A change of colour from white to khaki or olive green and the original Tilley hat still does little for it's wearer in the way of style. Retaining all the original practical features, Tilley hats now come in a myriad of different styles which may suit some people.

So now let's take a look at safari hats for the modern African hunter...

Essential safari hats guidelines.

When hunting in Africa, hat function is the prime concern. However, if want to look vaguely good in a hat here are a few tips on how to choose a hat to suit you .

Safari Hat Size And Fit

Get the size and fit right so the hat is comfortable for many hours of wear. Even if you know head measurement, hat sizes may vary in different brands, styles and construction. You should measure around your head just above the top of your ears or where you want the hat to sit. It is too big if you vigorously shake your head or bend forward and the hat falls off. It is too small if it pinches or rubs anywhere and will be liable to give you a headache. If unsure about exact hat size, look for one which is adjustable.

For hunting in Africa you really don't want to be aware you are wearing a hat at all. Picking it up every few minutes if it falls off is a just a plain nuisance. It should stay put through most hunting action barring getting seriously caught up in a thorn tree or speeding along in the open hunting truck.

Keeping Cool In A Safari Hat

• Preferably in the heat you want a hat with an interior band to wick sweat moisture away so you stay drier.
• Additional cooling features such as vents and/or mesh will be useful to allow the heat to escape. Hats made of cotton or canvas material are also 'breathable'.
• Are you going to be hunting in tsetse fly country? If so, a hat with a very open mesh crown is not such a good idea - the flies will find a way inside your hat through the mesh. If you want some mesh ventilation, look a hat with small mesh gaps. Note the mesh construction of a hat is usually stiff and not an insect repellent barrier and not to be confused with a mesh insect screen that can be attached to a hat.
• All round wide-brim is essential to prevent facial, ear and neck sunburn and reduce glare from sun. Some hats offer extra sun screening in the shape of roll-up or clip-on ear and neck nape flaps . Others even have clip-on drapes to cover your neck and top of chest in the front.

Other Useful Safari Hat Features

• As mentioned before, an African safari hat needs to be well-fitting. However, hardly any hat will stay on when travelling at speed high up on the back of a hunting truck, such as if you are travelling on a regular road between hunting areas. In these circumstances, you will either have to travel in the cab, take your hat off completely or lash it down tightly on your head with a chin cord .
• A chin cord is very useful even when travelling at 'hunting' speed in the hunting truck. Hats are always being knocked off if travelling under branches so a cord will stop it flying off completely out of the truck. An adjustable cord with a locking mechanism is ideal.
• As with all your hunting safari clothes, your hat will need to be in khaki, green or brown colours rather than white or any bright colour.
• A hat that is crushable is preferable for easy packing rather than a hat that you to have to wear or remember to carry everywhere.
• A certain level of water-resistance might be useful but full waterproofing should not be necessary.
• In addition to your main safari hat, you may need a warm wool or fleece hat for cold mornings in the hunting truck.

I work outdoors in a sunny climate and recently resolved to wearing UPF hats rather than sunscreen. I hummed and hawed over a lot of hats, but as soon as I saw this it vaulted directly into the shopping basket. I'm 7 3/8" so was a bit nervous about the "Small Medium Large" nomenclature, but this passed the test of bicycling downhill into a head wind, a daily requirement, without any sign of looseness - yay. Oh, and it looks really sharp, sharper than the photo's I'd say? The right shaped hat for me (although your head may differ)!

Beautiful hat

I love the way this hat looks on the website and in other review pictures. On my head, I'm still undecided whether it will become my favorite Conner Hat. Currently that title goes to my Kangaroo Buffalo hat. The crown on the Bounty Hunter is a bit taller than my other hats.

I wasn't expecting the hat to be as stiff and rigid as it is. It "looks" like leather or waxed canvas but doesn't feel like any other leather or canvas hat I own. It will take me some time to get accustomed to it. That said, I don't think the brim will ever flop up around in the wind or rain.

It is also surprisingly light weight (in terms of pounds). It is significantly lighter weight than my other similar sized hats. The brim is very moldable so if I decide to reshape the brim I have no doubt it will hold its shape.

As for sizing, my Kangaroo Buffalo hat is an XL even though my measurements put me firmly in the size L bucket. Before ordering the Bounty Hunter hat, I emailed customer service and was told to order size L because they run large. It was a solid recommendation. Size L fits perfect.

This is my 2nd Conner Hat. So far I'm pleased with the service and the quality of both hats. It took a few days before each order shipped, but I was pleasantly surprised both times that USPS delivered them a few days earlier than they originally estimated. Conner is a family business, so I'm Ok with a slightly longer shipping time vs. AMZ. I like buying from humans.

I bought this hat for a trip to Mexico and it really delivered: my head stayed cool (I could feel the breeze on my noggin at times) and my wife tells me it looked good. This is something because I don't like wearing a hat but have to on account of my hairline. And it packed well, didn't get crushed in my suitcase. Highly recommended.

I was visiting from out of town and we stopped by here three time while we were here for a week. First to see what they had. This is a considerably larger store than the one we have in our town. They had basically everything a nerd could want. DND books and minis, magic cards, Pokémon, half of the store was cosplay stuff, mangas, war hammer, and other rpg and tabletop games. They had a reasonably sized play area that we could see. We intended on coming to the Friday night Magic events that they host but sadly we're unable to make it. The store was clean and the people were friendly and helpful. One of the cool features that they have is a tablet in store that you can search for cards through. You can also get the app and leisurely search at home and they will have the cards ready for pick up.

Eh. Some costumes and lingerie. This store can't seem to decide if it's selling comics and memorabilia or lingerie and adult toys. Fairly large location though and the stock rotates often so this may be the right store for you. You will not have an issue parking because the lot has about twenty spaces. Downtown Moscow also has street parking so hooray! The staff is generally friendly and knowledgeable. As in any store that all depends on the day and who helps you. Prices are fair on most items. As far as the adult items they do mark things up but being in Moscow you don't really have a lot of items for some of their merchandise. Amazon is bigger now so hopefully management will tweak prices accordingly to keep it competitive. If you're grabbing a few extra accessories for a costume or Halloween party this is your local spot. I do not understand the negative reviews of this store. The employees were quick to help anytime I had any questions and even told us about the free module Saturdays. The unique thing about this store is that it is not a toxic atmosphere like you may experience at the downtown Pullman gaming store. It has gaming of all types such as cards, board games, and table top rpg's. There is also costuming which I think fits quite well with the rest of the store as many gamers enjoy cosplay and the like. It was clean, the employees were respectful and were quick to remove negative customers who were rude, inappropriate and disruptive. I cannot praise this store enough. Most certainly the best gaming store around.

Wide selection of games from children to adult. Lots of Warhammer and D&D merchandise. Not a large selection of comics in store but I believe they will order whatever you want. Costumes/cosplay stuff rotates throughout the year, and the hidden adult-toy area has an okay selection. But I will definitely recommend this store for board games and Warhammer!!

I really like the selection of games here. We got The Battle of Hogwarts here and play it weekly. Have the expansion pack, too. Also enjoy the Fantastic Beasts Perilous Pursuits and Pandemic. The folks there have always been helpful and knowledgeable

I went here today because the costume portion of the store was recommended to me by a good friend. I was also told there is a sex-toy shop in the back room that I should check out. First off, as I was looking through the costumes, I was consistently followed by an employee as if I was going to steal something. They have just one dressing room, and the employee stands outside the dressing room the entire time, making you feel uncomfortable and rushed. Second, after showing an older female employee my ID to enter the sex shop, she ordered a younger male employee to be in there while I was. He followed me around the entire time I was in the sex shop, and it was very uncomfortable. I do not appreciate the lack of privacy that was given while looking at such a....personal election of items. If a female is going into the sex shop, they should have a female employee in there - and perhaps one that doesn't follow you around everywhere. I absolutely will not be back.

I was really disappointed in this store. I came in looking for comic book recommendations and was pretty much ignored. When I finally was able to get some help, it seemed as if I was inconveniencing the store. The store layout is weird and the selection is very limited. I felt kinda awkward the whole time I was in the store. The stores prices are rather high and they don't do any sales or promotions either. So I would recommend going to someone else in town or just shopping online. I won't go back.

For a comic shop, it has a really minuscule selection of comics. There are a couple shelves against the side of the wall, but the amount of current comics is almost non-existent. Then there's a couple tables with older selections of comics, which I appreciated. Please correct me if I am wrong, but if you want to get a subscription box, it's pretty pricey. I asked the cashier at the time and she told me that you pay for your box, then you also pay per series you want to subscribe to, then, of course, you pay for your comic as well. There are no other benefits other than that you are guaranteed a copy of whatever you're subscribed to. It was being justified that it's due to the fluctuation of college students coming in and out, so you also have to pay to cancel your box as well. Aside from the comics, there were also TCG -- mainly Magic, figurines, board games, and costumes. It seemed like this store tried too hard to do everything that it doesn't have much of anything. Despite the lack of items, my visit was still pretty pleasant as the cashier was friendly and helpful. If I'm ever out in this area again, it's hard to say if I'll go out of my way to revisit.

I got in the store knowing exactly what I wanted so when I was asked if I needed help I said no. It was not long before it was clear that I was being followed. (Creeper) peeking trough shelves and around cournors, it was weird , strange and totally creepy. After ten minutes of feeling very uncomfortable I left. An hour later I went back to talk to the owners. They made it clear it was all my fault for not realizing it was costumer service to be stalked. (They clearly did not care) After I ordered the stuff I wanted online I went to yelp and found out this offensive stalking like behavior happens a lot. (another situation) I was carded three times in one week by the same (carnie) dude to get in the back room. Theres no way he did not remember. He as well watched us like a hawk. Never going back, when every thing is available online cheaper.~~~~~~~~~Thanks for reading

If I could leave a 0 star review I would. I was sent to this shop by a friend and on my first visit was REFUSED the sale of an item on the grounds that I was not a regular customer. Of course now I will never be a regular patron and I urge any "new comers" to avoid the trip and save some time. Horrible service! Awful ethics! This shop should be shut down.
