While both tires share the brand name, there are some main points to note about them both, structure wise, I mean.

Let’s start off with Michelin Defender 2’s design first.

  • At a glance : The Defender 2 presents a more streamlined symmetric design with a total of five ribs.
  • Outer Ribs : The exterior 2 shoulder ribs are rather straightforward, where block exhibits a single wave-like siping slit.
  • Central Most Rib : The middle most rib is continuous-running and is adorned with a lot more interlocking sipes, which are also slightly angled.
  • Adjacent ribs : Neighboring to the middle, are ribs with less siping (of different angles). They also carry in-groove notches as well, interconnecting longitudinal grooves.

As you may have noticed, its characterized by a comprehensive system of linked circumferential channels. These channels effectively channel water away from the footprint of the tire, improving its ability to resist hydroplaning.

And since more water going out, lessens the burden on the sipes, the overall wet traction is enhanced with that as well.

Though it’s numerous angled siping don’t need any help.

Side Note: If you’re wondering how sipes work, just think of them as water containers. Since water has to go somewhere, when it gets the pressure/weight of the tire, it squeezes into those slits, which later spray water particles out.

So yes, in summary, the Michelin Latitude HP not only provides outstanding traction, particularly in maneuverability, but also demonstrates enhanced resistance to hydroplaning when compared to the Defender 2 .

Noise Dampening Ability

When it comes to the road “quietness”, the Michelin Defender 2 takes the lead .

At lower speeds, the tire only produces a faint white noise, while on highways, its a bit more noticeable, it still tends to merge seamlessly into the ambient noise.

There is also a specific interaction of sounds between the tire tread and the road surface, particularly noticeable when taking on and off ramps.

But yes, overall sound profile of this tire, as seen by it’s decibel readings is on the quieter side.

Whereas on the Michelin Latitude Tour, you get a more pronounced auditory presence where it’s greater in-groove resonance, and some cavity sounds contribute.

Moreover, with a lot more biting edges, the tire also emits growling sounds.

Dry Performance

Now, sure, the Defender 2 also offers appreciable lateral grip/traction, (as suggested by it’s comparable lateral g-force readings), the Latitude Tour HP still takes a notable lead, with it’s more stable steering responsiveness.

And that’s all thanks to it’s spirally-wound nylon cords, and and multi-directional in-groove notches on it’s shoulders.

(Shoulders make the most contact, while the tire is turning).

Discussing tread life, one can clearly see, why the Michelin Latitude Tour HP is the one lacking behind, signifcantly, despite it’s robust silica-based tread compound.

And this difference is evident in their respective UTQG ratings.

I mean sure, the UTQG is not the most reliable for cross-brand comparisons, as I explained here , it becomes a very valuable metric within the same brand.

Meaning, the Michelin Defender 2’s treadwear rating of 800 indicates that it can last up to eight times longer than the reference tire, whereas its counterpart, with a rating of 440, suggests a lifespan of only four times that of the reference tire.

So you can say that the Defender 2 can easily last twice as long as the Latitude Tour HP , where the tire’s light weight structure, combined with fewer notches, results in lower rolling resistance generation.

Moreover, the Defender also offers a deeper tread, allowing for a longer duration before reaching the minimum legal tread depth of 2/32 inches in the United States.

One of the reasons why all-season tires have become so popular in the last few years has to do with their traction and grip on all types of surfaces. With their extra-wide grooves and internal steel belts, these tires not only provide extreme cornering and braking abilities but they can also handle more abuse.

Michelin’s all-season tires aspire to do something extra. That means that whether they offer everything mentioned above, models like the Latitude Tour HP come with additional features so that you have no problem differentiating them from other all-weather tires on the market.

And what are those additional features? Do they just increase the asking price of this all-season tire or make their presence felt on the road? Read on our review of the Michelin Latitude Tour HP to have answers to all these questions.

Michelin Latitude Tour HP Review: Features

If you haven’t already, you might want to check out how the Michelin Latitude – the predecessor of the Latitude Tour HP – fared in our test drive a few months ago. That would allow you to have a better understanding of this model’s features, and areas where it has improved on its precursor.

Exclusive Technologies

As far as providing its tires with the latest technologies is concerned, Michelin always takes the lead over its competitors. The Latitude Tour HP is a visible reminder of this fact, as this tire comes with three exclusive technologies. Apart from populating its specs’ list, all three of them help take this model’s performance to the next level.

  • Comfort Contact Technology : The name of this technology betrays what its major function is. It makes sure that the tire is in constant contact with the road at all times, thereby reducing the vibrations that passengers might feel in the vehicle’s cabin.
  • Filament At Zero Degrees Technology : To reinforce the tire’s twin steel belts, the FAZ technology precisely places individual, nylon filaments in specific portions in the tread area at a zero degree angle. This unique arrangement helps the tire retain its original shape for long and enhances steering precision.
  • Green X Technology : Michelin claims that all its models that come with the Green X symbol provide huge fuel efficiency without asking you to compromise on other key features such as tire traction and tread wear.

Three Speed Ratings

As we have been telling in these pages before, tires’ speed rating indicates the maximum speed they can maintain without decreasing their shelf life over a longer period. Hence the reason why expensive models such as sports cars have tires with high-speed ratings than, say, family sedans. 

  • H Speed Rating : Provided you own a coupe, we recommend that you choose the Tour HP which comes with H-speed rating – as it allows you to take your vehicle’s speed all the way up to 130 miles per hour.
  • V Speed Rating : Not impressed with the maximum limit set by the previous speed rating? That means that you might have either a sports car or a coupe. So the best you can do is get V-rated tires whose maximum speed limit is at a massive 149mph.
  • W Speed Rating : The W-speed rating is given to those tires which meet the needs of vehicles that can reach abnormally high speeds, as any normal vehicle can only dream of hitting the speedometer at 168mph.

Michelin Latitude Tour HP Review: Test Drive

Given the fact that it’s such a high-speed tire, we did have our doubts about the performance of this model on our lowly family sedan. To be specific, we were concerned that since it caters to the expensive segment of market, this tire might not do well for normal folks who don’t believe in the ‘paddle-to-the-metal’ maxim. Read on to find out whether or not it proved our doubts true.

Treadwear and Durability

First things first, Michelin offers four treadwear warranties on specific sizes of the Tour HP. Let’s look at the warranty periods before discussing the treadwear properties.

  • Models with H, V and W speed ratings : 55,000 miles warranty
  • Models with W speed rating : 45,000 miles warranty
  • Models with H speed rating : 30,000 and 60,000 miles warranty

So what do these warranty periods tell us? Models that are provided with lower speed (H) rating last at least 15,000 miles before than those which come with the highest (W) rating. In plain English, if you drive slowly, the tire will last longer.

That’s exactly what we found while we took the tire on a test drive. While users who have used W-rated tires complain that they wear down quickly, our H-rated tire showed no such signs whatsoever.

Of course, there are other factors like your driving style which impact a tire’s wear, but our impression was that if you don’t own an exotic vehicle, choosing the H-rated version of the Latitude HP will allow you to keep on using the same pair for a longer period.

Dry Performance

When checking the dry performance of all-season tires’, we always have a two-point checklist at hand. It monitors the tire’s performance based on high-speed stability and traction on dry surfaces. Thankfully, the Latitude Tour HP ticked both these boxes with aplomb.

Thanks to the wide groove pattern of its tread pattern, this tire ensures excellent steering responsiveness and precision at high speeds. As a result, apart from getting a super road feel, you always feel that you’re in control, regardless of how high the reading on the speedometer might be.

As for maintaining its traction on dry surfaces, that’s where the Comfort Contact Technology makes its presence count. It effectively distributes the stress along the tread pattern to make sure that the tire is in contact with the road at all times, thereby providing a superior grip.

Wet Performance

Most all-season tires face a double whammy when you take them on a road that has only recently received showers. On one end, they have to provide optimum traction to prevent any slippage. On the other, their grooves have to effectively channel water to keep the danger of hydroplaning at bay.

The Latitude Tour HP performs both these seemingly contradictory jobs with ease. While we weren’t aware of them at first, a post-drive inspection of the features list revealed that it was its 2D Active Sipes that were responsible for improving these tires’ grip on wet roads.

Even when you’re driving in heavy rain, the circumferential tread grooves of this model would never let water disconnect the tire’s connection with the road surface. They do that by constantly eliminating water from beneath the tire’s tread, enhancing the HP’s hydroplaning resistance.

Comfort and Noise

Not long ago, one of our readers asked us to name one feature which is common among all Michelin tires. Our answer? High comfort and low noise. That’s because we knew that all of its models come with two specific features which make your ride noise- and vibrations-free.

The first among those features is the Comfort Contact Technology. It reduces the vibrations the tire will pick up from the road and transmit to the cabin by maintaining constant contact with the road. As a result, those traveling won’t have to contend with road vibrations.

Secondly, its computer-optimized tread pattern plays its part to absorb road noise. It does that by evenly distributing stress along with the tire’s tread, thereby, making sure that all the road voices are canceled out within the tire’s rolling movement.

Snow & Ice

In contrast to what Michelin might want you to believe, the performance of these tires on snow and ice is well below-par. That’s a bit of a shame considering the fact that the original Latitude Tour holds up its own in light snow and ice conditions.

However, with the Tour HP, there’s no such thing as ice traction. You can corroborate our views about their performance on snow by asking other users of these tires. Provided they are being truthful, you should become scared enough to never, ever take them on anything colored white.

We don’t blame its manufacturer because these tires, as their speed ratings indicate, are designed to be driven at abnormally high speeds. They are more concerned about their highway performance and less on traction on snow and ice.

Michelin Latitude Tour HP Review: Conclusion

When compared with Michelin Latitude Tour, the Latitude Tour HP performs better on high-speed stability, wet-road grip, and ultra-comfortable and noise-free ride, though it performs poorly once you compare this model’s performance on snow & ice with that of its predecessor.

Michelin Lattitude Tour HP

Does anyone have experience using Michelin Lattude Tour HP's on their 2008 Highander Sport? After 29,000 miles, my Toyo's are done, and I would like to use something other than Toyo or Bridgestone. Based on the posts that I have read, it sounds like 255/55 19's are working well for those that have made the change. If not, please let me know. Costo, the Michelin company rep, and local Michelin dealers have recommended against making the change to 255/55. I assume they are just trying to avoid any possibile liability due to moving away from factory specs. If you have had actual experience with other brand 255/55 upgrades, please share. I have had great experience with Michelin MXV's on my wife's BMW and Michelin PS2's Porsche 911, so I thougth they seemed like a safe bet. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I went through the tire buying routine for my 2008 HL a few months ago. The only original size tires that I found were the OEM Toyo A20's and Bridgestone Dueler H/L 400 plus the Toyo H/T. Clearly, the only original size tire to consider would be the Toyo H/T in the 245/55/R19 but after poor service from the OEMs I did not wish to go that way. When you go to the 255/55/R19 size for all season tires you have a choice of several other tires. Among the top choices are the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza, the Michelin Latitude Tour HP, the Pirelli Scorpion Zero. All of these tires are V speed grade and have A/A traction/temperature ratings. The differences are the UTQG wear ratings which is 600 for the Alenza, 440 for the Tour HP, and 400 for the Zero. Hence, the Alenzas have a longer wear capability than the others. The price difference is that the Tour HP cost about $60 per tire more than either the Alenzas or Zeroes which cost about the same amount. Bottom line is that I chose the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenzas. I have had them now for 4000 miles and have no regrets. My local tire retailer sells Bridgestone, Michelin, and Toyo tires and he highly recommended the Bridgestone Dueler Alenzas as his choice.

Comparing Tire Apples to Oranges When tire shopping you have to consider the various categories and just how they compare to your tire usage. Tire Rack at tirerack.com likely does the best job of parsing tires into their proper slot. If you search on tirerack.com for tires in the 255/55/R19 size you get a total of 10 tires in that size. Let us limit our consideration to all season tires. Hence, two of those 10 are Ice & Snow tires while another one is a Summer tire so that reduces the tires under consideration to 7. Now one tire (Goodyear Wrangler MT/R) is an off road max traction so it is not what any Highlander owner would consider. Furthermore, the Pirelli Scorpion ATR is listed in the On/Off Road All Terrain category and I suspect that few Highlander owners would purchase that specific tire--it is more for use on a Toyota Four Runner. Thus the tires to consider by the majority of Highlander owners are five tires from two remaining categories. Of those five tires which are left we have three from the Street/Sport Truck All Season category (Continental 4x4 Contact, Michelin Latitude Tour HP, and Pirelli Scorpion Zero). Then from the Highway All Season category are the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza and Goodyear Wrangler HP All Weather. These two categories are the likely ones that Highlander owners would consider for their vehicles based upon how/where HL's are driven. According to the Tire Rack data the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza tire is the highest reveiwer rated and lowest cost of the tires in this final group of 5.

I think Toyota deserves a swift kick to the nether regions for specing the 245/55-19 size on the Highlander. It's the only vehicle that uses that size whereas a number of other SUVs use the 255/45-19. It's hard for tire manufacturers to justify producing a given side tire for only one vehicle. Anyway, I'll be buying a set of 255/55-19 Nokian WR G2s for my wife's 2008 HL in the next couple of weeks.  

The Nokian G2s are an all-season tire...are you planning to use them all year? What price have you found and where as I'm interested in the same tires?  

Thanks to everyone who provided advice re replacement tires. After checking this forum, Tirerack and the Edmunds forum, I decided to take a chance on the Michelins. My local tire dealer came up with a price a little better than Tirerack's and a lot better than Costco or NTB. My first impression is that the tires are as quiet if not quiter than the OEM Toyos, ride is about the same, but dry handling is greatly improved. I am looking forward to testing them in wet and snowy conditions.

Anyone out there using these tires? Looking for an opinion on the Michellin Lattitude Tour HP's for our family cruiser--I was running Bridgestone HP's, but they have been discontinued in the size that I was previously using. My wife primarily drives our LX-450 (no mods) so street use. We do plan on moving to the Wash DC area next summer so there may mild winter use next year. I was also considering the Bridgestone HL Alenza's and Michelin LTX's--I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.  

My two cents. It is designed more for crossover SUV's than truck based ones. It will over good dry weather and wet handling, but the LTX will be a better tire in snow conditions. The Bridgestone HL Alenza is a good tire for your proposed use and any of the three tires you mentioned will be excellent tires for your proposed use. Tire Rack is a good place to research any of these tires you are interested in.

Also, consider the Bridgestone Revo, which a number have given high regards. Agree with C the HP may be more of a light duty type.

Experience with Michelin Latitude Tour HP?

Has anyone tried the Michelin Latitude Tour HP as a replacement tire? It looks like it is more of a "highway tire" and less of a "truck tire" than the Michelin Cross Terrain. I think it is relatively new from Michelin, and Costco told me they don't stock them but can order them. It's a little less expensive than the Cross Terrain (about $200 each installed). I live in the south with no snow, but need good wet traction and resistance to hydroplaning. Also, I use the Murano as a commuter vehicle, so I need good fuel economy and a quiet ride. I have 64K miles on the OEM Goodyears and they are okay, but would like something quieter and better handling. All opinions are welcome, and thanks in advance!  

I have always done well with Michelin. My Cross Terrain still look and perform like new about 20,000 miles later. But having said that...... If I needed tires right now, i would get Yokohama Parada Spec-X. $138 from Tire rack. www.tirerack.com If you do a comparison......the Yoko's finish first in their category, compared to the Michelin Latitude Tour HPs which finished 4th. Of course, compared to the OEMs, they are both going to be a lot better. Homer

Speaking of Michelin, I am wondering anyone will consider the LTX M/S. I had these in my previous Pathfinder and found it is pretty good. I stress that it is the M/S version not the A/S version. We live in Canada with quite a lot of snow. I try to find a good real all season, not 3 season, to get away from having another set of tire ( I have no room to store them). Our city is not that big and tire shops normally don't do give much good deal and Costco is the best place to go. Thanks.

Paul, I drove the Michelin LTX A/T series on a 1999 Blazer for almost 60K miles. Fantastic tires - in fact, I've never had a bad Michelin tire. If you need a more aggressive tread, the M/S versions should be a good way to go. The only drawback to the Michelin LTX tires I had was that when they got down to their last 4/32" of tread, they got slippery - even though the tread was still legal to drive. I ended up buying replacement tires before the Michelins were technically worn out, just to improve traction. However, given that I had 60K miles on the tires (the most I have ever gotten from any set of tires) I didn't feel bad at all.  

The sales price of the Michelin Latitude Tour HP tirs ($148 at Discount Tire Direct, free shipping) made it hard for me to pass up. I ordered 4 of these tires and had them mounted on the MO. I originally wanted the AVID Envigors, but they were back-ordered. Also, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that my wife probably wouldn't notice much performance difference in the tires. More importantly, the Michelins don't have a unidirectional pattern which means that I can rotate them and keep the wear even. We've put 500+ miles on the Michelins and can say that they're outstanding tires. Very quiet and they smoothed out the ride. Handling-wise, they're not quite as eager to turn-in as the old Avons (wider tire), but roadholding seems to be on-par. What I like about the Michelins is that they're a M+S rated tire, which will be nice on those trips up to the mountains this winter. So far, very pleased.  

Just bought Michellin Latitude Tour HP. My original Goodyears were severely worn when I purchased the vehicle with 13k miles last May. Didn't feel safe going through the winter on them so it was time to change. I hate tire noise so we will see how these do.

I traded in the Goodyears at Discount Tire and got the Michelin Latitude Tour HP - within the first month of owning my Murano. My reason was good experience with Michelin on passenger cars (daughter's '03 Camry, wife's '09 Camry and most recently on mother's '86 Grand Marquis). The Goodyears were noisy and harsh IMO, and the Latitude Tour HP tires are an improvement. I've only put a few thousand miles on them, but I don't regret spending the money. The one thing that I'm a little unsure about is that they do not come with a mileage warranty. I extensively researched reviews before I bought them and found the usual mixed bag of love and hate, satisfaction and disappointment. One thing to do in reading reviews is to try and find those with the same vehicle you have, or similar. A Dodge Ram 1500 4x4, for example, is not going to be a comparable review. An Acura MDX will be.

Just purchased these Michelins. So far so good. The biggest thing that I am happy with is that my new tires got rid of the intermittent steering wheel vibration at 50/60 mph. -biggun  

Its probably because the new tires got balanced and the old one was not since it was installed.  

I agree 100% - new balanced GYs would have also got rid of the vibration. However, I believe that the issue was caused by my failed lower control arm ball joints that I recently replaced. They caused uneven wear to the inner portion of the tire, which caused the tires to vibrate. I was happy with the GYs. I hope the Michelins last as long. My first impressions on the Michelins are that they are a soft tire. I mentioned this to the tire rep that my last Michelins (on a different vehicle) wore out quickly. He assurred me that it was because they were a "Sears Michelin Tire" versus a "Michelin Tire". Only time will tell. -biggun

I have three Michelin Latitude Tour HP from a 20 inch LE rim in 235/55/20 which is the OEM size...I'll be willing to give them away since I replaced them with new Toyo Parada Spec-X. They have 5/32nds of tread left...there are three of them...the fourth one was at the minimum of 2/32nds so I left it at the tire shop. They have even wear across the face of the tire and are in decent shape otherwise. If you're in the Sacramento area you can pick them up....I don't know if it would be cost effective to ship used Michlins via UPS by the time I bought boxes and you paid the shipping costs. Geez guys.....I have three Michelin Tours in 235s for 20 inch LE wheels I'm willing to GIVE AWAY....5-6 32/nds left and I want to give them to someone.....no one wants them? I couldn't see leaving them at the tire dealership only to have them sell them to somene who wanted a used Michelin with some mileage left on them....and I cant' even give them away? If I don't get someone who wants them, they're going back to the tire shop for disposal....I thought sure someone would want a freebie.
