How to Convert a Camper Pedestal Dinette Table Into a Bed

Dining table, plates, and glasses inside camper trailer.

Camping is a popular pastime for families. A selling point for many people when camper shopping is how many people the camper or RV can sleep. Due to campers' limited space, utilizing every square foot is a necessity, so many features in campers serve more than one function, like the pedestal dinette table. If you are new to camping or staying in a recreational vehicle, you may be unaware that most dinettes serve a double purpose. You might be wondering, "What is a dinette bed?"

A dinette camper bed is a booth-style table that converts into a bed. Typically, these beds are anywhere from 35 x 64 inches to 50 x 80 inches. During the day, the table functions just like any table — it's great for meals or getting some work done — and at night, it converts to a bed. While you may need to check with the owner's manual for the exact conversion process, all pedestal dinette tables function about the same.

Video of the Day

Step 1: Clear Off the Dinette Table

Clear the table and benches of anything that could get in the way while you are removing the tabletop and the pedestals.

Step 2: Remove the Tabletop

Remove the tabletop and set it off to the side. It is important to note that some pedestal beds have safety levers that need to be released before you can remove the table. You need to pull on the lever to release it. It could be helpful to have two people perform this step: one person to lift off the table and another to hold the legs steady.

Step 3: Remove the Pedestals

Remove the pedestals. Some camper dinettes may have one, and others might have two. No matter the number, they all need to be removed. The pedestals might need to be pulled a little harder than you think. Grasp and pull straight up and then set aside.

Step 4: Place the Tabletop in the Seat Area

Lift up the cushions on the seat benches. There should be a lip into which the tabletop slides. Make sure that the tabletop is in both of the lips and pushed back to the wall.

Step 5: Place the Cushions on Top of the Table

Arrange the cushions from the dinette seats on the tabletop. Cover the now-converted bed with bedding or a sleeping bag . To make it even more comfortable, consider purchasing a mattress topper .

5 Tips on How to Make RV Dinette Bed More Comfortable

Good news for all RV owners! Despite the challenges of sleeping on an RV table bed, you or your guests CAN get a good night's sleep.

With some simple modifications and additions, dinette booths can make comfortable sleeping areas; they just need a little help. Here's what you can do to help solve the problem…

1. Add Additional Support to the Base

adjustable leg

One of the main reasons dinette beds aren't comfortable is because they dip at the tabletop section. To address this problem, you can reinforce the base with a stronger post, such as a thick, cut-to-size dowel or an adjustable leg. This will help distribute the weight more evenly and prevent the tabletop from sagging.

Alternatively, you can consider adding a piece of plywood or a bedboard underneath the table top for added support. This is especially helpful if the existing support system is weak or flimsy.

However, keep in mind that adding a piece of plywood will add extra weight and take up storage space. We have heard that some RV owners screw the plywood to the underside of the dinette tabletop, creating a sturdy platform that doesn't take up additional storage space.

Another option is to get a new table top altogether, which can be custom-cut to fit perfectly.

Regardless of the method you choose, adding more support to the base of your dinette bed can make a significant difference in its comfort level.

2. Add a Memory Foam Topper or Mattress Pad

bedding storage ideas

Memory foam mattress toppers are an effective way to add extra cushioning and support to your existing dinette bed. Memory foam conforms to your body shape, providing pressure relief and reducing motion transfer, which can help you sleep more soundly.

Additionally, memory foam toppers can help regulate temperature, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter .

When choosing a memory foam topper for your dinette bed, look for one that is the right thickness and density for your needs. A thickness of 2-4 inches is ideal, and a density of 3-4 pounds per cubic foot is considered medium-firm, which is a good balance of support and comfort.

However, you'll have to find a good compromise between thickness and weight, as a memory foam mattress topper can be quite heavy (and expensive).

A more economical and lightweight alternative to a memory foam mattress is to use egg crate foam. Even this small layer of foam can make a huge difference.

3. Use an Air Mattress Instead of Seat Cushions

Air mattresses are a good option since they roll up like a sleeping bag. They are versatile, easy to store, and provide a comfortable sleeping surface. They come in various sizes, shapes, and thicknesses. Plus, you can also adjust the firmness of the mattress by adding or releasing air.

You can secure it in place with fitted sheets or straps to prevent it from moving around during the night. Some air mattresses even come with built-in pumps, making it easy to inflate and deflate them without the need for additional tools or equipment.

It's worth noting that air mattresses may not provide the same level of support as memory foam or traditional mattresses, so it's important to choose a quality one to maximize comfort. Additionally, they're susceptible to punctures and leaks, so it's a good idea to have a repair kit on hand just in case.

Plus, it can be difficult to find the right size and shape of cushions to fit your dinette bed, especially if it has an irregular shape. They can also be quite heavy. That's why this last option might be the best overall option…

10 Great Tips to Sleep Better in Your RV

4. Replace Your Dinette Cushions

It can be difficult to find the right size toppers or blow up camper mattresses to fit the RV dinette booth area. The dinette lengths and widths don't often match standard sizes for these RV mattress alternatives. So, sometimes the best option is to work with what you have in order to maintain the perfect fit.

You can replace and upgrade the seat cushions that serve as the mattress. This often includes the back cushions, so don't forget those!

Instead of buying new cushions, you can simply replace the stuffing with new foam. This is a great option to DIY, but if you can't or don't want to, you can take your cushions to a seamstress or upholsterer.

5. Upgrade Your Bedding

Another great way to make your RV dinette bed more comfortable is to upgrade your bedding. Having the right bedding can make a significant difference in how comfortable you are while sleeping.

Begin by investing in high-quality sheets. Look for sheets that are made of a soft, breathable material, such as cotton or bamboo. These materials are not only comfortable to sleep on, but they also help regulate temperature and wick away moisture.

It's also important to choose the right pillow. A good pillow can help support your neck and shoulders, which is essential for a good night's sleep. Look for a pillow that is the right size and firmness for your sleep position.

It's a good idea to refer to brands that specialize in RV bedding, like Beddy's . They're one of the 3 Best RV Bedding Solutions we recommend.

RV Dinette Bed FAQ

Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions about RV dinette beds…

How do I convert my RV dinette into a bed?

To convert your RV dinette into a bed, you typically need to remove the tabletop and cushions and then rearrange the cushions to form a flat sleeping surface. Some RVs may have additional support or mechanisms that need to be adjusted, so it's important to refer to your owner's manual for specific instructions.

Why is my RV dinette bed uncomfortable?

RV dinette beds can be uncomfortable for several reasons, such as sagging cushions, lack of support, or inadequate bedding. Additionally, the size and shape of the bed may not be ideal for your body type or sleep preferences, which can lead to discomfort.

What size sheets do I need for my RV dinette bed?

Most RV dinette beds are smaller than standard mattress sizes, so you may need to purchase specialized sheets designed for RVs. Make sure to measure your bed before purchasing sheets to ensure a proper fit.

Can I use a regular mattress on my RV dinette bed?

You can use a regular mattress on your RV dinette bed if it fits properly and doesn't exceed the weight capacity of the bed. However, keep in mind that regular mattresses may be too heavy or bulky for an RV, so it's important to consider the size and weight of the mattress before purchasing.

cruise america rv table to bed

I took a 1,000-mile road trip in a 150-square-foot RV, where no space was left unused. Take a look inside.

  • Cruise America's "compact RV" was the smallest motor home I could get my hands on for a recent road trip.
  • The RV was comfortable but not too difficult to drive.
  • I thought the RV was surprisingly spacious and comfortable.
  • While there was a clever way to store the dinette table's leg to turn it into a bed, I didn't notice any other space-saving features.

Insider Today

I recently rented an RV for the first time in my life, using it to drive almost 1,100 miles from New York to Acadia National Park in Maine and back.

As first-time RV -ers, my friend and I spent hours scouring the internet to find just the right one: small enough not to be too difficult or slow to drive, but large enough to sleep us comfortably and not ruin a decade-long friendship (i.e. had a bathroom with a door).

We settled on Cruise America's " compact RV ," the smallest motor home offered by the rental company, which has 127 locations across the US and Canada.

RV rental companies have seen an enormous spike in bookings since states started lifting stay-at-home orders, as Business Insider's Brittany Chang previously reported .

While I paid $225 a night for my rental, booking about a month in advance, Cruise America's website says "prices fluctuate based on season, location, and availability much the way airline prices fluctuate. In general, the earlier you book, the lower the price."

Despite being 20 feet in length, 12 feet in height, and 7.5 feet wide, my compact RV was a lot more comfortable and spacious than I thought it would be, though it didn't have the space-saving features I expected from a tiny home on wheels.

With a length of 20 feet, our RV wasn't that much longer than an SUV. For reference, a Ford Expedition is 17.5 feet long.

The RV looked pretty standard on the outside.

There was a little storage window for the water hose ...

cruise america rv table to bed

... And another one for the charger cable.

cruise america rv table to bed

Inside, the RV was surprisingly spacious.

cruise america rv table to bed

Six-and-a-half-foot ceilings meant that even my tall friend could stand up straight and move around comfortably.

cruise america rv table to bed

We had two cozy beds, one behind the driver's seat and one above it.

cruise america rv table to bed

The main bed, located over the front of the RV, was queen-size and full-length.

cruise america rv table to bed

It featured a window, skylight, and curtains both for the window and between the bed and the rest of the RV for privacy.

cruise america rv table to bed

My bed was technically for children, but at 5-foot-4 I fit perfectly and slept soundly.

cruise america rv table to bed

There was a dinette table that could seat four. The table and cushions could be turned into the second bed.

cruise america rv table to bed

Turning the cushions into the bed meant that there were no stray pillows obstructing the limited space at night.

cruise america rv table to bed

The table's leg went in here, which I thought was a clever space-saving feature.

cruise america rv table to bed

While there were cabinets for storage around the top of the RV ...

cruise america rv table to bed

... I didn't really unpack and kept my suitcase under my bed.

cruise america rv table to bed

This extra seat was also a great storage spot for backpacks and other knickknacks, though they tended to shift while driving.

cruise america rv table to bed

Underneath that seat, there was a nifty little shoe rack that fit about three or four pairs.

cruise america rv table to bed

I think this compartment was meant for clothes since it had a closet rod (though no hangers), but since it was located between the fridge and kitchen sink it made more sense to us as a pantry.

cruise america rv table to bed

The fridge was quite small. As you can see, a gallon jug, laid sideways, took up almost an entire shelf.

cruise america rv table to bed

The freezer was even smaller. The ice tray didn't come with the $110 kitchen kit we rented with the RV.

cruise america rv table to bed

The kitchen also had a microwave ...

cruise america rv table to bed

... And a double burner stove. To get it going, however, you need matches.

cruise america rv table to bed

Counter space was extremely limited (especially when you kept the dinette table made up as your bed), but the stove had a clever plastic lid that could double as counter space.

cruise america rv table to bed

There were three cupboards and three drawers in the kitchen.

cruise america rv table to bed

There was also a small sink, where we put everything from the counter before driving so it wouldn't fall to the ground as we were moving.

cruise america rv table to bed

There was a control panel in the corner that was meant to show us how full the tanks were, but it didn't seem to work half the time. It was also where you turn the generator and water pump on and off.

cruise america rv table to bed

The tiny bathroom was right next to the kitchen and had the smallest sink I've ever seen.

cruise america rv table to bed

There's a freshwater toilet that you flush by pushing a lever with your foot. If you run out of water in the tank and aren't connected to a water hookup, well, then you can't flush ...

cruise america rv table to bed

There's a handheld shower head right over the sink, meaning that to shower you basically contort yourself between the sink and toilet, as there's a drain between the two.

cruise america rv table to bed

If your grey water tank (used water that isn't sewage) is full, however, the shower won't drain. We learned this the hard way.

cruise america rv table to bed

Surprisingly, a very quick shower managed to flood the kitchen right outside.

cruise america rv table to bed

Outlets were few and far between.

cruise america rv table to bed

The door, which was covered in duct tape, had two locks so that it wouldn't pop open while driving.

cruise america rv table to bed

The front of the RV was comfortable and spacious, and filled with various nooks, crannies, and cupholders.

cruise america rv table to bed

While the RV was nice and bright thanks to various windows and skylights, that's not what you want when parked at a campsite where people are all around you looking in.

cruise america rv table to bed

This divider curtain, I believe, was meant to shield the RV interior from view, but clearly didn't do a good job. I'm sure a few passersby caught glimpses of me changing.

cruise america rv table to bed

A Cruise America representative told me that the oldest compact RV they have at my location is from 2017. While I don't know what year mine was from, it felt a little older and more worn to me than that.

cruise america rv table to bed

It was also not as clean as I would have liked.

cruise america rv table to bed

My biggest gripe, however, was that the RV only had four hooks for towels and coats, and not a single mirror anywhere.

cruise america rv table to bed

While super comfortable for a short summer road trip in which we spent most of our time outside, and kept the second bed made rather than turning it back into a dinette every day, I thought it could get quite cramped in this RV if we had heavier clothes in winter, or if we were on a longer trip with more luggage.

cruise america rv table to bed

Representatives for Cruise America did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Renting an RV was far more expensive than I thought it would be. Here are 15 costs to consider before you book.

Cruise America RV: MOST In-Depth Analysis [RV Cost, Types & Safety]

There’s nothing like traveling across America by road. This is the home of iconic Route 66, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Pacific Coast Highway – there are myriad bucket-list journeys to take.

Yep, hitting the great open asphalt in the USA can mean crossing dusty Arizonan deserts where cowboys once roamed. It can be about feeling the salt spray of the Californian ocean through your window. Or, it can mean weaving through the snow-dusted tops of the Rocky Mountains. It’s for all those reasons and more that Cruise America RV rentals are such a popular option for travelers…

Cruise America RV camper traveling through Death Valley National Park

In fact, an RV rental could be precisely what you need to take that American odyssey to the next level. Not only do these wheel-spinning rides promise to get you out and about in the great outdoors. They also offer you the chance to take all those prized creature comforts with you. How? Well, Cruise America fields a whole host of possible autos. They start with small-scale vans for the no-frills freedom seeker and go all the way to fully-fledged motorhomes. The latter throw in extras like gas cooktops, refrigerators, showers, and electrical generators. It’s like cruising with a hotel in tow!

So, if you find yourself searching for that dream Cruise America RV or sifting through Cruise America reviews, be sure to read on. This guide has useful info and titbits that can help you plan the perfect RV rental. Before you know it, you’ll be gliding through the hemlock-hemmed ridges of Appalachia or pulling up at salt-washed surf spots on Oregonian shores. Let’s get started…

What exactly is Cruise America?

Cruise America is one of the leading providers of RV rentals in the United States. Since opening in 1972, it’s been offering adventurers the chance to lease large-scale motorhomes and smaller travel trucks to live the American dream of cruising through cities, states and wonderful landscapes. It’s now an employee-owned enterprise that trades publicly.

Where can I get an RV rental from Cruise America?

Two Cruise America RV rented RVs in parking lot of Yosemite National Park

There are hundreds of locations where you can pick up a Cruise America RV rental in the United States. From East Coast to West Coast, the Arizonan deserts to the redwoods of the Pacific Northwest, your ride can be waiting for you pretty much wherever you want. That’s thanks to a whopping 132 outlets across the continent (yep, it’s possible to find Cruise America in Canada, too). Some offices are found in town centers, others in industrial parks on the outskirts of major cities. Those near big airports are often linked directly to the terminals by shuttle bus.

What types of RV rental does Cruise America offer?

In a world dominated by assisted braking, eco fuel pumps, and diesel-infused engine valves, Cruise America has opted to keep things simple with its range of rental options. Would-be drivers have just four packages to choose from. Each has its own price point, pros, and cons, and is aimed at a different type of traveler. Let’s take a look at each, beginning with the smallest…

Truck Camper rental

Cruise America truck camper rv rental for couples

Starting the ball rolling is the Truck Camper Rental . This is the smallest of the bunch. You can expect more of a glorified roadster than a motorhome. The engine room of this bad boy is an F-150 Ford with a five-liter V8 under the hood. You get all the bonuses of power steering and cruise control, along with an AUX-input sound system that’s great for playing The Eagles on repeat on any long-haul drives through Cali. Of course, the main limitation of this is the size. Inside, it’s compact with room for a small seating area, a double bed, and a small kitchenette.

Compact RV rental

Cruise America Compact fully self-contained RV for 3 persons

The next size of RV rental on the menu with Cruise America is the compact. Small but not too small, this one’s interior boasts extra prep space in the kitchen, two seats up front, and a partitioned dining area. Said dining spaces transform neatly into one double bed come evening, while a lofted section above the driving cab also comes with space for a sleeper. The lower height and width make the compact RV a little less bulky than its larger compadre. That makes it easier to drive in high-wind conditions and on winding mountain roads.

Standard RV rental

Standard RV cruises for maximum 5 capacity

The Standard RV rental option is perhaps the most common choice among Cruise America customers. It’s a midrange, mid-sized vehicle that packs in plenty of space and extras to make that roadie across the USA a comfy one.

It’s really a classic motorhome, offering a partitioned bedroom, a dining sector, and a large kitchen. You get all the comforts of gas stoves and refrigerator in the cooking area, and there’s a roomy bathroom that’s loaded with a flowing shower and fresh-water loo. You might want to consider this style of an auto if you’re after the classic RV experience. It’s also got room enough for the whole family and is an all-round versatile ride.

Large RV rental

Large size Cruise America RV camper for 7 persons

Whoever said size didn’t matter? The largest RV rental on offer from Cruise America is powered by a Ford V10 engine and comes with the biggest amount of square meterage of all the options. It’s one for extended families who are looking to bring their pets in tow. And it’s a top choice if you’re looking for more creature comforts on a longer, coast-to-coast road trip. Benefits include a trio of double beds, a single sleeping area, and dual rear tires for a smoother journey.

How much does an RV rental with Cruise America cost?

Woman cooking in a camper kitchen

As with all sorts of vehicle rentals, the costs of a Cruise America RV can be tricky to calculate. What with daily rates, fuel surcharges, add-on policies, and a whole host of potential other extras to factor in, it’s usually best to take a holistic approach. That means calculating what your whole trip will cost, from the moment you collect your RV to the moment you drop it off.

Daily Rate

Naturally, the daily rate will change depending on what particular RV rental you plump for – larger motorhomes will set you back more than smaller ones. On average, the price of a standard motorhome is about $50-60 a night. For a 10-day trip, you’re looking at $500 all in.

Miscellaneous Top-Ups

What’s more, personal kits continuing necessities like pillowcases, matches, and plates can be added for around $100 per ride. There are state taxes to tack on, as well as the cost of electrical generators. You’ll also have to pay a deposit on pick-up, which is blocked at $500 on a credit card or taken in $1000 cash. And that’s not even mentioning the price of mileage (see below).

The upshot of all this is that the cost of a Cruise America RV rental depends on oodles of factors and extras. You might be able to bring a short, local trip in at under a few hundred dollars. For longer rides with all the bells and whistles? It’s probably going to be a price tag in excess of $3,000-$4,000 a pop…

All about Cruise America mileage options

One of the things that affect the bottom line on Cruise America RV rentals the most is the mileage. There are surcharges for mileage applied to every vehicle. That comes in at $0.35 per mile and is counted at 100 miles on local rentals, and 250 miles on point-to-point rentals. So, you can expect to pay upwards of $35 more per day when renting on a standard RV just to cover the cost of getting around. Of course, that estimation may go up or down according to your policy and location.

Some RV rentals with Cruise America might be eligible for a premium unlimited mileage option. This is by far the simplest way to go about things. It’s not available for all vehicles but means you won’t have to keep an eye on that distance ticker.

Where can I go with my Cruise America RV?

Cruise America Camper parked on a road side

One of the joys of opting for a Cruise America RV is the freedom it brings. If you’ve ever dreamed of hitting the open road – this is where that dream becomes reality. Yep, from the ancient granite domes of Yosemite to the sand-blasted beachfront of the Carolinas, the wetlands of Florida to the sleeping volcanos of the Washington Cascades, there are not many limits on the wonders you’ll be able to see when driving your motorhome across the stars and stripes.

It’s really one-way RV rentals that make all that possible. They allow you to go from A to B without worrying about how you’re going to return your wheels at the end of it all. Cue New York to San Diego trips. Get ready for those jaunts down Route 66. Prepare for odysseys up the surf-washed Pacific Coastline. You get the idea.

Before starting your trip, it’s worth reading up on the few restrictions there are on RV rentals with Cruise America. For example, customers won’t get recovery if they go off-road in the far-flung Yukon. And there’s no help for breakdowns in extreme Death Valley locations come the scorching summer months, either.

Where can I sleep with my Cruise America RV?

Camping in a national park with Cruise America RV during the night while stargazing

One of the most common questions that would-be renters ask is where they can spend the night. Of course, RV rentals are equipped with a bed (sometimes several). But does that mean you can rock up and catch some Z’s wherever you want?

The answer: Within limits.

In fact, just glossing over Cruise America reviews is usually enough to see the variety of places where RV rental folk have gotten some shuteye. They include Walmart parking lots (it’s recommended to ask permission of the store manager beforehand, though) and rest stops on the roadside in a whole host of states (some states, like Arizona and Texas, don’t permit it).

However, by far the most comfortable place to spend the night in your RV is in a dedicated RV campsite. There are more of these than you can poke a Buffalo wing across the United States. They sit in sleepy city suburbs and cling to the edges of breathtaking national parks alike. Some have modern facilities with electrical hookup points and flushing toilets. Others are more rustic affairs, where it’s likely to be just you and the engine and the starry skies.

You can soften the cost of staying in RV rental campgrounds by getting passes of all sorts. Take America the Beautiful pass as an example. It costs $80 for the year but provides the holder access to loads of federally operated recreation sites, many of which contain paid campgrounds at a small extra charge.

What’s it like driving a Cruise America RV?

Driving a camper during winter

Let’s not pretend that driving a dual-wheeled 20-footer is the same as purring around in an economy car. It’s not. C-type motorhomes are a little different from classic autos, but not so different you won’t be able to handle them.

The major changes are the effect that high winds and adverse weather will have on your driving. You might find you’ll need to compensate more on the wheel as you come over the blustery buttes of Colorado, for example. Adding to that, the extra weight means it can often be tricky getting up steep slopes, though powerful Ford engines and modern tech usually takes care of that too.

One thing for sure is that there are plenty of RV options for you to choose from. But if you’re down to choosing the best Cruise America RV, you’ll find your answer right here. However, if you’re seeking some of the best places to camp with your RV, here are some suggestions.

How Much to Rent an RV? How Cruise America Prices Rentals

How Much to Rent an RV? How Cruise America Prices Rentals

When planning an RV road trip , your budget plays a key role. Foremost in your mind is how much to rent an RV you should set aside, but you may not know how much exactly that will be.

Wondering how much it costs to rent an RV and curious about what factors influence RV rental prices? Cruise America is happy to explain it all to you and to get you on the road faster while saving money.

How Easy is It to Rent an RV?

Before talking about how much it costs to rent an RV, you're probably wondering how easy it is to do it. The truth is that it is incredibly easy to rent an RV. You don't need a special license to rent an RV, and you don't need any prior experience driving an RV before you try to rent one!

All in all, renting an RV is a great and easy way to see the country! Your biggest challenge may be finding the RV you want, especially if you're booking for a popular time.

What Factors Into RV Rental Prices at Cruise America?

Your pickup location, time of year, travel destination, and the duration of your road trip all play a role in the costs for how much to rent an RV, along with insurance costs. And, of course, the size of the RV you rent plays an outsized role, too!

Pickup Location

If you're planning on picking up your RV rental from a popular hub, be prepared to pay a bit more than you might when renting from other places...especially if your trip coincides with a busy time of year. You may be limited by what vehicles a certain location has in stock, especially if you delay booking until a time that's close to your travel date.

Time of Year

Want to celebrate Freedom over the July 4th holiday? Well, that's a time of high demand, so you should naturally expect to pay more. Then again, there are times throughout the year when special deals are offered by Cruise America. If you're flexible with scheduling, you can get quite a bargain.

Travel Destination/Mileage

The farther away your destination is, the more miles you'll rack up to both to get there and then to return to Cruise America (unless you're going on a one-way RV road trip , in which case you may find attractive discounts and avoid paying more in mileage charges).

Duration of Your Road Trip

Anyone who has ever rented any type of vehicle has to be prepared for this: The longer your trip/length of rental, the more it will cost — usually. You might find that a longer-term RV rental (a month or more) is offered at a discounted rate compared to a shorter-term (a week or two) rental.

Size & Model

A smaller RV will cost less — both in terms of the actual rental price, and gas — than a larger RV, but quite often, larger RVs are far more comfortable. If money is a concern and you don't need a super-sized RV for your road trip, going with a smaller vehicle or a less fancy model will be much easier on your wallet.

Other Factors in Pricing

Aside from factors more or less in your control, there are also rental fees and taxes to pay — they creep up on you just like this point did, and they're not up to Cruise America — when thinking about how much to rent an RV, remember how fees and taxes will vary by state/province.

As for additional fees that an RV retailer might charge you, be ready for rental insurance — but not at Cruise America, which provides free Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) with each RV rental.

How To Save Money on an RV Rental

Now, there are definitely ways to save money on an RV rental you might not have considered at first.

Relocation and One-Way RV Rental Deals

If you're open to a one-way RV rental, you may want to ask about a "relocation deal" . In this case, you get an RV for a one-way rental at a discounted price because you're effectively relocating that RV to another retailer location across the country.

Cruise America also has one-way specials based on date and destination, so check 'em out!

Find Great Gas Deals

It's not just the price you have to consider over how much to rent an RV; gas will also be a major expense. Be on the lookout for deals that include gas cards or discounts as incentives for renting an RV.

Book Your RV Ahead of Time

You can save money on an RV rental by reserving your vehicle well in advance. For example, the earlier you book your RV with Cruise America, the more choices you have in terms of vehicle size — which, as you know, influences how much to rent an RV you'll have to pay!

Save Money on an RV Rental With Cruise America

The best way to save money on an RV rental is to go with a company with more than 50 years of experience providing satisfied RV road trippers like you with a great experience — Cruise America!

Cruise America's pricing is competitive, with special deals and discounts offered throughout the year. In addition, you can save on fees with Cruise America, thanks to each RV rental coming with free SLI!

First Time Renting an RV? Why Anyone Can Do It

First Time Renting an RV?

Just as it is the case that anyone can learn to drive an RV , anyone can also handle renting an RV for a road trip. While driving a rig can take some getting used to, if you've ever rented a car or a moving truck, then you're already experienced enough to get through the process of renting an RV.

If you're still intimidated as a first-time RV renter, not to worry: We got you covered. It's a lot easier to rent an RV and take it on the road than you might think.

FAQs About Your First Time Renting an RV

You probably have some burning questions about your first time renting an RV; here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the experience.

Do you need prior experience driving an RV to rent one?

You don't actually need to have experience driving an RV before you rent one. Many first-time RV renters like you have never driven one in their lives — in fact, that may be one reason they're renting an RV for the first time ...to get experience in one!

Do you need a special license to drive an RV?

You don't usually need a special license to drive an RV; generally, the one you have already will do just fine.

It's true that some states have special requirements requiring a certain class of license to drive vehicles over a certain weight or length, but your average RV rental won't likely fall under that, and most states (34, to be exact) have no special requirements whatsoever.

What size RV will I need for my trip?

What size RV will you need for your trip? Well, that depends on how long you're planning on traveling for and how many people will be traveling with you! Obviously, an RV with one or two beds won't cut it for a travel party of 5 or more. However, you also don't need a huge rig if it's just you and your spouse heading out on a post-retirement celebratory journey.

Are RVs hard to handle?

Once you get the hang of it, no. You should be aware that as they are larger and longer vehicles at high speeds, it takes longer for them to slow down. It's also important to know that you'll have to pay special attention when making wide turns at sharp street corners. Even so, with a little practice beforehand, you can easily get the hang of driving an RV.

Are there any limitations when renting an RV?

In all likelihood, the only limitation you'll face your first time renting an RV is what vehicles are in stock . If you're planning on renting an RV in peak season, you won't likely have the pick of the litter. However, if you plan ahead, you can reserve a great RV that's perfect for your travel needs well before anyone else grabs it.

Can I rent an RV for a one-way trip?

Yes, you can rent an RV for a one-way trip . Sometimes, that's simply the best option — if you're driving all the way across the country, and aren't so confident about driving all the way back, its actually an ideal way to do it. Cruise America can help you figure out how to make it happen.

Do I need to book a campsite before I rent an RV?

No, you won't need to book an RV campsite before you rent an RV. In fact, doing so may be unwise since you can't be sure what size of an RV you'll have or if the hookups at your campground will work with the RV you rented.

It's better to wait until you have an idea of what kind of RV you'll be renting before booking your RV — but don't wait too long since campsites can fill up quickly!

How easy is it to rent an RV?

How easy can it be when it's your first time renting an RV? You'd be surprised. Lest you think — or start to overthink -— the process, Cruise America has a helpful Renter's Orientation video for first-time RV renters. It can help you figure out all of the ins and outs of RV renting and how your first-time RV rental and road trip can be a success .

Think about it: If it's easy enough to explain in a 22-minute-long video, how hard can your first time renting an RV really be?

And, more help is never far away. Cruise America provides numerous renter resources that will ease you into the RV renter's life. In so much less time than you think, you'll have mastered the RV rental and road trip process.
