Join the Belmond British Pullman for a special day out

Belmond British Pullman

Your initial glance heightens the anticipation: carriages gleaming in umber and cream livery, stewards resplendent in their immaculate uniforms, while they wait for you to board the train., video: belmond british pullman.

This is the Belmond British Pullman (sister train of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express) , the most stately of trains. It's like stepping back in time. Because, over a century ago, George Mortimer Pullman, the originator, recognised that his passengers would be accustomed to unrestrained luxury and comfort. And, in order to accommodate them, he issued orders to the finest craftsmen of the day to construct in his words "Palaces on Wheels". His instructions were honoured in every respect.

Your steward will show you to your reserved seat in one of eleven carriages, each an original masterpiece from the 1920's or 1930's with their own name and unique personality.

On board passengers are seated in either ‘coupé’s (small compartments seating up to four people) or in the open car mostly at tables for two. There is a limited number of single tables and of tables for three persons in the open car.

The train can carry up to 226 passengers and consists of 10 parlour cars, of which 5 are kitchen cars, and a service car. The carriages seat between 20 and 26 passengers in each.

Superb Service

The service, like your journey, will be calm and unruffled. Settle back into your deeply comfortable seat and be transported into another age while Britain's glorious countryside unfolds past your window.

Step aboard and return to an age of luxury, comfort and glamour, when service was always impeccable and life was lived at a less hurried pace; the quintessential Venice Simplon-Orient-Express experience. Plush upholstery awaits, surrounded by intricate marquetry, mosaic floors, solid brass fittings and softly-shaded lamps. Your table is set with starched white cloths, shining silver and glittering glass. The cuisine is a delight and accompanied by wines judiciously chosen to complement the fine food.

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express: London to Istanbul

Travel to istanbul in unsurpassed style on the world's greatest rail journey, 10-day luxury rail journey from £19,525 pp incl. flights.

  • Recreate the maiden journey of the Orient Express
  • Claim bragging rights on a trip that runs just once a year
  • Explore Paris, Budapest, Bucharest and Istanbul with expert-led tours in each
  • Stay at seriously stylish hotels throughout
  • Treat yourself to champagne cocktails and delicious gourmet meals

Just once a year, in August, the classic Venice Simplon-Orient-Express returns to its original route, making the same journey that it did on its maiden voyage in October 1883. While many associate this iconic train with the classic luxury journey from London to Venice, this epic alternative sweeps across Europe, through rural France, along Hungarian rivers and over Romanian mountains to Turkey’s great plains and, ultimately Istanbul – the historic gateway between East and West. You'll also be treated to a host of experiences, including a visit to Peles Castle in Romania and a guided city tour and Danube river cruise in Budapest. Beyond the places you’ll visit, though, it’s the experiences you’ll enjoy onboard, from the immaculate fine dining to those iconic bar-car cocktails, that make this the most magical journey.

From London to Paris

Begin among the Victorian extravagance of London’s St Pancras International Station. Then, let the excitement build as you relax in the lounge before boarding the Eurostar, where you’ll be travelling Business Premier for the journey under the Channel. Enjoy a meal by Raymond Blanc as you emerge onto the Continent and sweep through the countryside into Paris. Here we'll pile on the glamour by taking you to your luxury boutique hotel in the city's famous Latin Quarter, just a stone's throw from the Pantheon.

Settle in to your designer room before picking one or two of the city's headline acts to explore, perhaps the Louvre, Notre Dame or Eiffel Tower. Whichever you choose, be sure to take time to stroll the city’s boulevards, stopping at pavement cafés to make like a local. In the evening, enjoy a secret assignation at the hotel bar, a vampy space set up for liaisons dangereuses , where you can drink fine wines and creative cocktails. Oh là là…

The city of lights

Order breakfast to your room, take a dip in the indoor pool or book a treatment at the spa. While away the morning strolling along the Seine or exploring Paris further. Then make your way to the 19th century Gare de l’Est, where you’ll get your first glimpse of the iconic blue and gold carriages of the Venice Simplon-Orient Express. Meet your personal steward and let them show you to your cabin. Walk through the lovingly restored train marvelling at the attention to detail. Each original car is a hymn to the 1920s and 30s, with intricate marquetry and Art Deco design.

Each carriage has its own name, its unique personality and its own colourful history. Even its own secrets. Settle in to your cabin as you rumble through the suburbs of Paris and enjoy an indulgent afternoon tea. Later, dress for dinner, catch up with other passengers in the bar car and make the most of the fine dining available in the restored restaurant car. While you eat your cabin will be discretely converted into a cosy sleeping compartment, ready for your return.

Arrive into Budapest

Overnight the train will carry you across Europe so that you wake to pretty views of rural Hungary. Over a Continental breakfast served in your cabin by your steward take in your new surroundings. Once your bunks are stowed relax in your private sitting area until lunch. Later in the afternoon, tea will be served just before you roll into Budapest. It’s just a short drive from the station to the banks of the Danube and your luxury hotel. A converted 20th-century palace, the Four Seasons sets the standards for luxury in the city, offering superb dining, a standout spa and views over the neighbouring Chain Bridge.

As the day draws to a close, we suggest a sunset stroll through the city's atmospheric cobbled medieval alleyways after the tourists have disappeared for the day followed by a window seat in the Icon Restaurant where you can drink in the splendid riverscape laid out before you, with the Parliament lit up.

Budapest – a tale of two cities

Immerse yourself in Budapest’s cultural treasures on a walk with a local guide. Take in the 19th-century opulence of the Vajdahunyad Castle, discover the city’s hot-spring baths and explore the smart squares surrounded by townhouses. Slip into a café to tuck into coffee and strudel. Restored, cross the Danube on the famed Chain Bridge in order to contrast the morning’s sights with the citadels, cobblestone streets and royal palaces of Buda. You'll then be treated to a cruise on the Danube itself, taking in the views from the water, before heading to lunch at a local restaurant.

Linger as long as you can then return to the station and board the VSOE once again for the journey into Romania. By now you’re practiced at the routine and can slip easily into life onboard, pausing in the bar car for perfectly prepared pre-dinner cocktails before taking your seat in the restaurant, safe in the knowledge your attentive steward will prepare your cabin.

Revolutions and revelations in Bucharest

In the morning the self-same steward will bring you breakfast in your cabin and explain where you are; the peaks outside your window are the Bucegi Mountains and your next stop is Sinaia. Disembark among the pines just like the very first Orient Express passengers and marvel at the turrets, neoclassical statues and sculpted gardens of Peles Castle – the summer retreat of Romania’s first king is a fairy-tale vision.

Back on board, you'll settle into your cabin again as the train makes its way to Bucharest. Your base here is the grand JW Marriott (or similar), which sits just opposite Bucharest's icon – the monolithic Palace of Parliament. Step out of the hotel to explore with a local guide and uncover the striking modernist monuments, spectacular buildings and historic ghosts that haunt the city. Then, end your day in the company of your fellow guests with an included gourmet dinner at an exclusive city venue.

A journey through Bulgaria

We’ll take you back to the station where the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express awaits you for the journey south. Leave your cabin door open to glimpse views of the Danube out of each side of the train or to catch up with fellow passengers. Swap stories of your time in Bucharest over lunch before the train pauses in the Bulgarian countryside for you to stretch your legs. Your last evening on board ought to be the perfect excuse to push the boat out.

Spoil yourself with signature cocktails in the bar car and make the most of the fine dining available, made unforgettable by the sumptuous surroundings of the Lalique glass- and wood-panelled dining cars as well as the quality of the food, miraculously conjured up in the tiny galley kitchen. Incredible memories are made of such things.

Istanbul – gateway to the Orient

Pull back the curtains to look out onto the Thracian Plain before you cross into Turkey. After a morning at leisure and a long lunch you’ll begin the approach to Istanbul, with spectacular views over the Sea of Marmara. You’d be forgiven for feeling a little blue as you disembark from the train.

A private driver will whisk you to your luxury hotel, in the beating heart of Istanbul’s captivating Old Town, an iconic building has stood the test of time since 1895. Settle in and savour a crafted cocktail in the sophisticated setting of the Library Bar, before immersing yourselves amidst the sights, sounds and scents of Istanbul, just steps away from Blue Mosque, and Grand Bazaar, then return to relax and revive in your sanctuary.

Stay: Sanasaryan Han, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Istanbul

Byzantine treasures and grand bazaars of Istanbul

Today, delve deeper into the city’s past and travel back to the Byzantine Empire, with first a visit to the Molla Zeyrek Mosque, originally a Byzantine monastery. Visit Vefa Bozacisi, a historical boza shop established in 1876, try the fermented drink dating back to the 4th century. In the afternoon explore Pera, one of Istanbul's iconic central neighbourhoods. In the 1900s, home to foreign traders and diplomats, today, this chic part of Istanbul is a mixture of many boutiques, cozy cafés, old churches, synagogues, and impressive old mansions.

Conclude your day at the Grand Bazaar, pass the well-worn tourist areas and into the hidden scene of some of the greatest artisans in Turkey. From carpet weavers and metalsmiths, to jewellery designers and pottery painters, you’ll meet the people carrying on Turkey’s ancient handcrafting traditions. As an added bonus you’ll also get access to some of the rooftop viewing points that can only be accessed by those in the know.

Next day explore the eateries in local markets on both the European and Asian sides of the Bosphorus. From the European side’s Karaköy and the Asian side’s Kadıköy, Stroll through the atmospheric mariner market streets, then eat your way through neighbourhood markets, sampling dishes such as Mersin’s tantuni, Gaziantep’s lahmacun and the ıslama köfte of Adapazarı. Continue on toward the culinary hotspot of Moda to taste desserts from the Black Sea region.

About the itinerary

"Sumptuously opulent and a rich history proving its worth, I have hand-picked this journey because it epitomises exclusive travel. Step back in time – with champagne in hand of course – by travelling on this height-of-luxury train that took its maiden journey in 1883 on this very same route. "

9 Spectacular Train Trips You Can Take From London

Ride the rails in search of adventure with these epic train trips in the UK and further afield too – including Berlin, Vienna and even Venice!

Alex Landon

Table Of Contents

Train trips from London to UK destinations

Train trips from london to europe.

There’s something nostalgic and romantic about riding the rails and heading off for pastures new. Plus, with the continuing rise of the ‘flight-shame’ movement, railway travel is coming back in fashion in a big way, especially in Europe. Overnight train trips let you snooze your way to adventure – and they’re slightly more exciting than falling asleep on the Night Tube to Morden – whilst you can also strike out for Europe on grand railway journeys. Here are some lovely train trips from London we’re just itching to try!

Fair England and friends have a wealth of exciting destinations to get to – like Edinburgh for around just £25! – but for truly special train trips, try one of these on for size.

1. Caledonian Sleeper , Euston to Fort William

The incredibly scenic Glenfinnan Viaduct in Scotland, part of one of the best train trips from London

The renovated Caledonian Sleeper is the longest night train journey in the UK, departing from Euston by night and rolling into Scotland before sunrise. There are two routes, one heading to Glasgow and Edinburgh that arrives just after 7am, and another that skips the major duo and heads for Aberdeen, Stirling, and Inverness.

On the latter, one could hop off for a round of golf at Gleneagles, skip out at Aviemore to ski, or, as we’d do, stay in bed until the overnight train rolls into Fort William at 10am. This leaves you well placed to climb Ben Nevis, explore Loch Ness, or if you’re really train-mad, ride the rails to Mallaig aboard steam train service The Jacobite , which takes you over the Glenfinnan Viaduct made famous by Harry Potter . Read our review of it here.

2. Night Riviera Sleeper, Paddington to Penzance

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tour Partner Group UK (@tourpartnergroup_uk)

Nestled right down in the southwestern corner of England, Penzance and the surrounding areas are well worth the trek. Sure, you could fly , but there’s a more relaxing way – hop on The Night Riviera sleeper from Paddington, and you’ll hopefully be drifting off by the time the train departs at 11:45pm. By the time the clock strikes 6am, you’ll have crossed the Tamar Bridge into Cornwall, and by 7.50am, the train will pull into Penzance. From here, strike out for St. Ives, explore Land’s End, or make a pilgrimage across the shifting sands to beautiful St. Michael’s Mount, which watches benignly over Mount’s Bay. More info here .

3. The Cumbrian Mountain Express, Euston-Carlise-Euston

View this post on Instagram A post shared by images@twiston (@images.twiston)

The last of our UK train journeys is actually a day trip, one which leaves the capital just after 7am to whisk you up to Carlisle, skirting the edge of the Lake District on the way. Once you’ve arrived at Carlisle and had a little wander, you’ll depart on a steam train, which takes a scenic route along the Cumbrian coastline, including the sights of Grange-over-Sands and the Kent Viaduct before stopping at the charming market town of Carnforth. From there, you’ll pick up the fast service back to Euston, arriving back at 10.30am and presumably heading straight to bed. Find out more here .

These train trips require a little more dedication – and, crucially, the ability to entertain oneself on long journeys – since you won’t be able to sleep the whole way there. However, waiting at the end of these trips are some of the most exciting cities in Europe, and you can get there without feeling the guilt of having caught a polluting flight!

4. Eurostar, St. Pancras to Amsterdam

A Eurostar train pictured at a station in Amsterdam

Cards on the table, the Eurostar is going to be the starting point for a lot of the more ambitious train trips coming up now – but for now, here’s our favourite of the direct Eurostar routes. Since 2020, trains have run from St. Pancras ( Europe’s favourite station , dontcha know) directly to Amsterdam and back , eschewing the need to change trains at Brussels on the return leg (though this isn’t necessarily guaranteed).

The Dutch capital offers myriad delights (yes, that too), but a wander along the canals, a visit to the Rijksmuseum, and scoffing your face with everything in sight at Foodhallen should make for an excellent start. Though there aren’t deals currently running, this is something that often changes depending on the time of year. Learn more here .

You’d better be quick with this one though – rumour has it that this one is being suspended next year (2024) – thanks Brexit – so time’s running out if you want to make use of this bad boy!

5. Nightjet, St. Pancras to Vienna

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @heiko_cgn (@heiko_cgn)

Technically, once you’ve reached Brussels on the Eurostar, the Nightjet can take you to a whole variety of destinations across Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy overnight. Still, we’ve opted to snore our way to historic Vienna, for a tour of its coffee houses, a ride on the Riesenrad, and lessons in history from the Jewish Museum, and in psychology from the Sigmund Freud Museum.

The Nightjet, which is run by Austria’s state railway service ÖBB, departs Brussels around 6pm – Vienna waits for you at 8.30am, although Frankfurt and Cologne are earlier stops. It’s a pretty brilliant way to city-hop across the continent without spending on accommodation, as overnight trains to Rome , Venice, and Berlin also run from Vienna. With typical Germanic efficiency, they’re frighteningly on-time too. Find out more here .

6. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Victoria to Venice

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Adventures of Us (@the_adventuresofus)

As the Nightjet proves, there are other trains to Venice, but none will get you there with quite as much style as this route. It begins at Victoria station, as you hop aboard a gorgeous vintage Belmond Pullman train – a welcome brunch and Bellini being the icing on the cake. Once you’ve crossed the English Channel, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is waiting at Calais, complete with 1920s sleeping cars. You get a French-inspired , four-course dinner aboard this one, and winning views of the Alpine scenery before crossing the Venetian Lagoon around dusk. At a bare minimum of £3,353 per person, though, it’s one for when you’re feeling extravagant and pulling out all the stops!

7. Multiple routes, St. Pancras to Istanbul

An incredible panoramic view of Istanbul in Europe which can be visited on of the best train trips from London

Oof, time to settle yourself in for a long one. First up, Eurostar to Paris (standard fare for you by this point), before you catch the TGV from Paris to Munich. You’ve got options from here to Istanbul, either taking an arguably more scenic route via Budapest and Bucharest, or following the more traditional route of the old Orient Express via Belgrade and Sofia. Both lovely, both requiring a commitment of about four days, but it’ll make for one hell of an adventure. Once in Istanbul, start with Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar, and then explore from there! Check out The Man in Seat 61 for details.

8. St. Pancras to Malmö

The sun setting over the old lighthouse at the coastal city of Malmö in Sweden

An intriguing new option was revealed recently, with the Swedish government unveiling plans to launch an overnight train from Malmö to Cologne. Assuming the reverse is true, and knowing that Cologne is reachable in a matter of hours thanks to the Eurostar and a connecting train, this means London-Malmö is a distinct possibility, with a journey time of around seventeen or eighteen hours. That might get cut even further if future plans to connect Malmö to Brussels via overnight trains come to fruition. The earliest we could see these trains is later this year, but it’s an exciting start for sure. Read all about it here .

9. The European Sleeper, St. Pancras to Berlin

The fantastic backdrop of Berlin with the famous TV Tower in the background

Rounding off this list of the best train trips from London Town is this humdinger, which takes you all the way from the English capital to Eastern Germany and the capital of cool Berlin. Lasting just 16 hours and with only one stop in between , this development is a godsend for those looking to catch more views out of train windows across Europe, or decrease their air miles in the new year.

Our route was handily mapped out for us by The Man In Seat 61 back in January of this year, who said that from May of 2023, you can jump on the Eurostar to Brussels at 3:04pm, before hopping over to the European Sleeper Service to Berlin at 7:22pm. You’ll glide into the German capital at 6:48am – primed for a day of exploring after your cosy snooze and (free) breakfast. Find out more about this epic new route here.

So there you have it – a roundup of the best train trips from London. So if you’re looking to leave the big smoke on a national or international tour, then this list should have given you some inspiration!
