Along the way we’ll explore different islands and Kuna villages. You’ll be living the dream in traditional Kuna cabins right next to the crystal clear Caribbean sea and enjoying super fresh local cuisine.

With short travel distances per day on the boat, many stops on the islands in between, and the coastline always in sight, you won’t get seasick!

Get ready for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure you won’t forget!

  • Visit deserted islands
  • Explore an indigenous culture
  • Sleep in traditional cabins on the beach
  • Support local communities
  • Small groups
  • Local Kuna guides knowledgable in our culture
  • Delicious seafood

Day 1 - Arrival in San Blas

We meet in the morning at the dock in Cartí, San Blas to start our trip. To get to Cartí, we arrange transport in a shared 4×4 from Panama City to Cartí for you with 3rd party drivers, incl. pickup at your hotel. Throughout the day, we explore several islands in the Cartí area, according to some the most beautiful islands in all of San Blas. At night, sleep in a traditional cabin right on the beach. Make sure to not miss the spectacular sunset and night sky!

Day 2 & 3 - Exploring Kuna culture

Today, we set out after breakfast, to explore the idyllic islands surrounding Nargána, Tupile and Ustupo. This secluded area is so far off from the mainland road, which makes it a rare gem mostly untouched by tourists. Here, the Kuna people live in harmony with nature and have been doing so for centuries. Throughout the day, we stop on some uninhabited islands for swimming and relaxation. We will get up close with the Kuna culture and lifestyle during a village visit for lunch where a local family invites us to eat in their small restaurant and during our stay for the night in a local Kuna village.

Day 4 - Border-crossing

Today, it’s time to leave the islands behind and cross into Colombia. But before doing so, we make a final stop on beautiful Isla Pino. After extensive beach time and delicious local lunch, we head to Puerto Obaldía for the migration papers from Panama. Once done with the paper work and luggage check, we can enter the boat one last time for the ride across the Panama-Colombia border and arrive in the afternoon in Sapzurro, where our trip ends.

PRE-TOUR | Panama City-Cartí, San Blas: shared jeep ride, organized through us TOUR | Cartí through San Blas Islands to Sapzurro, Colombia: this tour, with us POST-TOUR | Sapzurro, Colombia: onwards journey independently (see FAQ below for info)

How is San Blas Frontera different from other operators?

  • We are a local company – we are the only local, Kuna company offering this trip. We grew up in the border region between Panama and Colombia with our Kuna traditions and customs. The San Blas Islands are our home. All our guides are from San Blas, we do not employ foreigners or volunteers as guides.
  • We offer a higher comfort – you will sleep in actual beds (hammocks only if you really wish to) and you can choose between small dorms or a private room
  • We eat local cuisine – no processed or western food, only local cuisine prepared by local restaurants or families. Of course, we also offer vegan and vegetarian alternatives.
  • We travel in small groups – Our groups are small enough to feel like you’re exploring San Blas independently, but big enough to create a good social vibe (ca. 8-15 people. vs up to 40 with other operators)
  • You can stay longer if you like – our tour is planned for 4 days but reach out to us if you would like to extend it by a few days!

How to book and to pay?

You can book via the homepage (pick your desired date in the calendar and choose package option) or through email at [email protected].

Payment is in cash on the day of the tour (US Dollars only). If this is not possible, we also accept payment via PayPal or bank transfer for an additional fee. Please reach out for details.

How to get to the starting point in Cartí?

Our tour officially starts at the dock in Cartí, Kuna Yala, Panama. Cartí can be reached through a mountain-road in shared 4×4 cabs in ca. 3.5h from Panama City. Since there is no public transport to Cartí, and only registered drivers are allowed to bring tourists to San Blas, we will arrange the pickup for you in your hotel in Panama City and your drive to Cartí. Here, we start the tour with our boat.

What to expect at the border to Colombia?

Before leaving Panama and entering Colombia, we make a stop in Puerto Obaldia, Panama to get the paperwork ready for legally leaving Panama. This is the last Panamanian community before entering Colombia. We will take care of the paperwork and visit the different offices in Puerto Obaldia for you while you can have a drink or eat something at a local bakery. Usually this also involves luggage inspection by the local police before being allowed to return to the boat and enter Colombia. Our tour ends afterwards in Sapzurro, Colombia. You can stay in Sapzurro for a night or directly go to the next community, Capurgana.

In Capurgana, you will need to get your entry stamp into Colombia within 24h of having arrived in Colombia. The immigration office can easily be located on the main street and it is an easy procedure. Please familiarize yourself with the specific entry requirements to Colombia for your country before starting the tour.

How to travel onwards (from Sapzurro, Colombia)

Can you share an exemplary itinerary from panama city to cartagena.

Exemplary planning from Panama City to Cartagena (5-days):

  • Sunday evening: latest arrival in Panama City (alternatively, but risky: arrival before 5am at Albrook Bus Terminal with overnight bus, e.g. from Bocas del Toro)
  • Monday: 5am departure in Panama City by 4×4 (no public transport to San Blas), ca. 3-4hours drive to Cartí, San Blas, Panama; we can arrange the ride for you. At 8:30am, our tour starts in Cartí, San Blas, Panama
  • Monday to Thursday: Island hopping tour
  • Thursday, afternoon: Arrival in Sapzurro, Colombia. Stay overnight in Sapzurro to enjoy beaches La Miel & Sapzurro. Alternatively, 10min boat to Capurganá, passport stamping and stay overnight.
  • Friday or later: departure with ferry from Capurganá to Turbo or Necogli (1oam, your passport needs to be stamped before that!), from there bus ride to Cartagena (alternatively to other major cities in Colombia). Arrival in Cartagena in the evening.

We recommend staying for several days in Sapzurro and Capurganá if time permits. Travelling from Capurganá to Cartagena is possible in 1 day. Passport needs to be stamped in Capurganá within 1 day of arriving in Colombia.

What should I pack?

You’ll be spending the entire day out on the ocean and in the sun so we highly recommend dressing accordingly!

Please bring mandatory:

  • Passport : mandatory, it will be checked upon entering the Comarca of Kuna Yala (San Blas)
  • Sufficient cash: in US Dollars to pay for the trip in cash, to buy drinks, snacks, souvenirs on the island (small bills of 1 USD and 5 USD highly recommended) – Credit cards are not accepted and there is no ATM in San Blas

Additionally, we recommend:

  • Sun protection: for the island and the boat ride (sun blocker, hat, T-shirt with sleeves, towel)
  • Water to drink: Water/soft drinks are not included in the package, please bring sufficient or purchase on the island
  • Swimming gear
  • Sandals, flip flops
  • Wetbag or plastic bag for your valuables in case of a wet boat ride or rain
  • Flash light
  • Clothes (to change if you get wet on the boat ride + it might get chilly/windy at night)
  • Snorkeling equipment

Please wrap sensitive items and put them in a waterproof bag as the boat ride to and between islands might get bumpy and wet at times. Have your passport and cash with you during the car ride and ready to present when entering the Comarca of San Blas (passport check + payment of the governmental entrance fee) and in Puerto Obaldia.

How much luggage can we bring?

You can bring your luggage with you. If you have more than 1 large backpack/suitcase and a smaller carry-on, please inform us ahead of time. Please also inform us if you have any bulky luggage (surf board, bike). Extra charges might occur. During trade wind season (December to February), there can be heavy winds and high waves, so please consult with us before the trip and ensure to wrap your bulky luggage to prevent it from getting damaged. We are not responsible for any damages that might occur.

How much cash should we bring and which currency?

How much cash:  You will need cash for the following situations during our trip:

  • Paying the tour price and transport to Cartí (in USD, if not already paid via PayPal)
  • Governmental entrance & dock fee of $22 USD (to be paid to the local authorities)
  • Cash for drinks, drinking water, beverages or snacks (not included, buy on the main islands or bring your own)
  • Cash for souvenirs, if wanted
  • Onwards travel from Sapzurro/Capurgana

San Blas is cash-only, there are no ATMs or card payments in San Blas.

Currency: US Dollars are the officially accepted currency. Please bring sufficient cash (US Dollars), preferably in bills of $1 or $5 for paying for snacks, water, taxes etc. since locals rarely have sufficient change for larger bills.

What about the entrance fee and other fees?

The followings fees are included: entrance fees by individual islands and villages that we visit, incl. the fee at the immigration center in Puerto Obaldia, Panama

Not included: the governmental entrance tax for visiting the Comarca of Kuna Yala, which all visitors to the San Blas islands have to pay once at the dedicated entrance points to Kuna Yala (road, ports and airports). This fee is used to protect the rich biodiversity of the Kuna Yala rainforests. It is $22 USD for foreigners and $5 USD for nationals and residents.

Is this trip suitable for children?

Yes, this trip is also suitable for children. Children usually love the beaches, the boat rides and being on an island. We recommend that children are at least old enough to walk when joining this trip. Keep in mind that most places do not have special baby equipment (baby beds, baby seats or special food/drinkable water) and that you will need to carry your infant on your lap during the boat ride.

Please also consider our special discounts for children.

Read this before booking your trip

A trip to the San Blas Islands is most likely very different to your usual vacation. All operations in San Blas are by law 100% owned and operated by local Kuna people , foreign investments are banned and foreigners/Panamanians are not allowed to conduct any business in San Blas. Most of the cabins are run by large families and provide income for a very large number of people. Many of the operators or employees have lived their entire life in San Blas, some never left the Comarca and most have never traveled to another country or stayed in a hotel. Kuna people have for hundreds of years lived a very simple and basic life consisting mainly of fishing and hunting. Tourism is fairly new and only very few have had real experience in the hospitality sector.

At the same time, the islands are very remote and difficult to reach. Everything that the islands themselves cannot provide (building material, gasoline for the boats, food,…) needs to be sourced in Panama City and sent for a high surcharge in a 4WD/SUV to the dock of Carti. From here, it is then redistributed via boats and again for a fee to smaller sellers and cabins. The islands are not provided with any infrastructure (electricity or running water) and locals live a simple life in tune with nature.

As you can imagine, great effort is required to provide a basic service to tourists and the locals do it to the best of their knowledge. As such, we kindly ask you to leave your mainland expectations behind and be open and try not to compare the $-value of a night in San Blas with a night in other parts of Panama. The simplicity of the cabins reflect a mix of the basic traditional lifestyle and the expensive sourcing for material with external financing being not allowed. Similarly, meals reflect local food patterns (fish/sea food with rice) with limited access and the attempt to adapt to foreign tastes with a bit of sides and salads. Drinking water needs to be imported from the City and is a luxury to most locals. Providing electricity and fresh water requires great effort and usage times might be restricted. Bed linens are washed by hand in the river on the mainland or sent to Panama City. There is no communal trash collection or recycling system in place. Only few locals speak English and some don’t even speak Spanish.

Nevertheless, we work closely with cabin owners to ensure that you will receive a great service, experience clean and functioning facilities and that your stay will be a remarkable one!

With this in mind, be ready to jump into your island adventure! Once on the island, you’ll most likely find that in such a beautiful setting, most modern-day luxuries are not needed and that there is a point to the simple and relaxing life that the Kuna people live 😊

Hear from our guests

Living and traveling through Kuna culture was one of the most incredible sensations found on this overland journey in Central America

“I opted to use the services of a Kuna-based company, San Blas Frontera, to be sure that my money would end up staying within the community . As well as meeting the Kuna communities , I was also lucky enough to enjoy the beautiful, sandy beach with not a care in the world. A different sunny island for each day of the year – definitely something I could get used to!”

We had a unique and unforgettable evening and are very grateful that we could be part of it ! Thanks to Luis and his company!

It was a fun three-day trip full of authentic experiences and impressions that are rarely found anywhere else in the world.

El Valle de Anton is one of the most colorful areas of Panama. The tour will take travelers to the Indian market where local artisans and Indians bring their handicrafts, plants and vegetable products to sell. There, one can find fine and wonderful hand-made woodcarvings, soapstone sculptures, seashells, souvenirs, leather goodies and much more. Later, visit the Indian petroglyphs, where ancient inhabitants left their messages—still a mystery for our modern culture. Also, admire the India Dormida Mountan, so called because of its resemblance to a sleeping Indian woman. Finally, visit El Nispero, a zoo that cares for some of the endemic species after they were found injured in the forest. This zoo also has a unique collection of orchids. Here, admire the golden frogs and the squared trees, both endangered species. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant. Return to Panama late in the afternoon. Optional: At El Valle one can take the Canopy Tour, which consists on a steel cable system that runs through the canopy of the forest, above Chorro del Macho (waterfall). There, using special harnesses, go through the forest, safely jumping from tree to tree. This activity costs an additional $40. This is an outdoor activity in the tropics, so light clothes, swimming suit, insect repellent, hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes are recommended. ...read less

This morning, be picked up at the hotel lobby. Be transferred across the Isthmus of Panama to the Caribbean province of Colon. Once in Colon, drive over the Panama Canal at Gatun Locks and reach the Castle of San Lorenzo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built at the mouth of the Chagres River, this Spanish bastion served to fortify and protect the river entrance to Las Cruces Trail that led to Panama City on the Pacific Ocean and was later also used as the port of entry for gold diggers on their way to California during the second half of the 19th century. Visitors will be traveling through lush rainforest within San Lorenzo National Park, where one might have the opportunity to see monkeys, Two and Three-toed sloths, Coatimundi, toucans and other wildlife. Continue for lunch at the Shelter Bay Marina before continuing to the current Panama Canal Expansion project on the Atlantic which can be admired from the observation deck of the Gatun Observation center. Have the opportunity of viewing the assembly of one the new sets of locks being built as part of the project. The route will allow larger ships to transit through the canal. The most important aspect of the project, however, is the building of two new sets of locks, one at each terminus of the canal, which will increase the waterway's capacity to move cargo from one ocean to the other by 50 percent within the next 15 years. An astonishing 4.2 billion cubic meters of structural concrete is currently being poured in the excavations where the new locks will be operating soon. Experience history in the making as the Panama Canal projections call for another 100 years of successful operation using the new technology that will be implemented. The return to Panama City will be aboard the Panama Canal Railroad train. The railway follows a similar route as the original train built to transport gold prospectors, the 49ers, in the mid to late 1800s coming from the east coast of the United States across the Isthmus of Panama to continue their journey by steamboat to California. The route was diverted when Gatun Lake was formed to give way to the Panama Canal. The train will take along the magnificent waterway, flanked by the exuberant rainforests of Soberania National Park. After a one-hour train ride, arrive at Corozal Station in Panama City and transfer to the hotel in the city. ...read less

I have had another fantastic trip

I have had another fantastic trip and am glad I chose to spend the whole 2 weeks in Panama rather than combine with another country as there is so much to see and do there. It is difficult to pick out the high points: the canal crossing was an ambition fulfilled; I had been a little apprehensive about San Blas but for no reason the cabins over the sea were amazing, Boquete was cool and the bird life wonderful. Tranquilo Bay in Bocas was exactly the right choice for me. The whole team was incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable; they made my stay a real treat. I have so many photos I shall spend the next weeks sorting them! I didn’t get to see much of the Carnival but was treated to two firework displays from the view from my hotel window each night I am a big fireworks fan. I think this is the 6th trip I have taken with Yampu/Kontiki and so far they have all been wonderful. Thanks for organizing this one for me.

Panama- It was seriously a great trip and I saw everything I wanted.

Our trip to Panama was seriously a great trip and I saw everything I wanted. We saw a bunch of kinkajous and cacomistles that came to our cabin at los quetzales. That place is magical, the bird life alone (we saw 6 quetzels, one even right outside our cabin) makes it worth a trip. Families would love these cabins and hands down the place had the best food in Panama.

Everything was made fresh and they had a huge organic garden with all kinds of vegetables, great for someone like me that does not eat meat.

We will certainly recommend Yampu to anyone and everyone contemplating a south-american tour

Not sure how much of the trip we can cover with you (3,000 pictures) but I can tell you that you and your group did an absolutely fantastic job of organizing it for us and custom-made to suit us. We kept expecting something to go wrong somewhere but it never did! We were always picked up and dropped off as per the agenda, regardless of which country, city, airport or bus station it was supposed to be at. The hotels we stayed at were also well chosen and the included meals were so much more than expected. We will certainly recommend Yampu to anyone and everyone contemplating a south-american tour. We just cannot say enough about the company or the services provided! We also take this opportunity to thank you and all the Yampu staff involved in our travel arrangements and also to wish all at Yampu, a very Merry Christmas and the best of everything in the New Year!

Since the building of the Panama Canal more than 100 years ago Panama has become an internationally renown centre of shipping, commerce and financial institutions. It is now becoming just as famous for tourism. The country is small enough that you can swim in the Caribbean and Pacific ocean in the same day, climb a mountain where you can see from coast to coast and yet large enough to find your exact type of vacation, whether its jungles, beaches, cities or mountains.

Panama City, a combination of super modern urban capital with an historical old town, to the beautiful beach islands of San Blas – Guna Yala just a short trip away. The mountain town of Boquete with its rivers, forests and temperate climate is in great contrast to the Bocas del Torro archipelago of islands with a distinct colorful Caribbean culture.

San Blas Islands Adventure Tour: Colombia To Panama By Boat

This is your Ultimate Guide to a San Blas Islands tour by San Blas Adventures : The best way to get from Colombia to Panama and see the amazing San Blas archipelago! This four-day boat adventure was one of the most amazing experiences we had in the region with island hopping, snorkeling, bonfires, and amazing, tropical scenery.

WHY A BOAT TRIP IS BETTER THAN A FLIGHT

The journey from Colombia to Panama is not a straightforward transit. The dangerous Darien Gap Jungle makes it impossible to pass through overland on a bus or via car. The most common way to reach Panama from Colombia is to fly to Panama City. However, we found that the flight tickets were $250 USD one way, which is quite expensive given the distance of the flight. The next option is to sail or take a boat from Cartagena, Colombia to Panama City, which sounded like the most adventurous option. We organized a 3-night/4-day San Blas Islands tour boat trip from Colombia to Panama, which costs $399 USD with San Blas Adventures .

WHY WE DECIDED TO GO DO A SAN BLAS ISLANDS TOUR

If you need to get to Panama City in a rush then you will definitely need to fly. However, if you are backpacking or traveling through Central/South America, the boat trip is the best option.

  • The cost of the San Blas Islands Tour was $399 and the flight from Colombia to Panama was $250. Therefore you get the San Blas Islands tour and transit bundled into one convenient package for only $150 more than the flight itself.
  • You need to transit one way or the other so combining the transit with an authentic adventure seems to make the most sense.

My mate Josh and I decided that for the extra $150 we would do the boat trip with San Blas Adventures for $399. Included in this fee were all accommodation, transits, meals, snorkels, and activities. The only other money we spent was on beers and coconuts but it was only a few dollars here and there. The group was awesome and we ended up having an epic time.

SAN BLAS ADVENTURES BOAT TOUR

In this San Blas Islands blog post, I am going to give you a detailed look into the four-day San Blas Islands tour with  San Blas Adventures . It was seriously an epic four days of living like nomadic pirates and getting a unique insight into the Kuna culture and way of life. Of course, the scenery was out of this world and I was lucky enough to get permission from the Kuna leaders to fly my drone to be able to get a unique aerial perspective of this beautiful region.

CARTAGENA TO SAPZURRO

For our journey, we needed to get from Cartagena to Panama City. The first step was to get to Sapzurro, a small town where the San Blas Islands tour departs.  San Blas Adventures  makes it really easy with instructions on how to get there by public transport. It was two relatively long days of transit before the tour even started, which is something to take into consideration, but there is no real way around that unless you sail from Cartagena directly. Beware of sailing directly as you will be stuck on the boat the whole time. The max time we were on the boat was 2 hours and for the rest we were exploring islands and villages, which is the best way!

From Cartagena we caught the following transports to Sapzurro:

TRANSIT DAY 1

  • Taxi from Cartagena to the bus station
  • 10-hour public bus to Necocli

TRANSIT DAY 2

  • 1.5-hour Public boat from Necocli to Capurgana
  • 15-minute ferry from Capurgan to Sapzurro (or you can do the 5km hike over the hill)

THE PANAMA – COLOMBIA BORDER

We woke early and jumped in our passenger boat, which we would be cruising for the next four days. This was the official start of our San Blas Island tour. All of the bags were wrapped in black garbage bags, people were showered, and smelt nice. The next four days would be all about the adventure and that kicked off with our first stop at the Panama/Colombia border.

Our boat pulled in and we were asked to bring out all of our bags and lay them in rows on the wet cement. Still in the black garbage bags, a sniffer dog was released from a small cage as a soldier with a machine gun led him around our bags. He finished and luckily none of the guys in our group had been dumb enough to try and smuggle anything across the border!

We thought that might be the end of the process. However, they indicated we would need to have every single back, and every single pocket individually searched. This took about an hour for our group of 13. After we finally finished we went to the local bakery with our bags to chill and wait for our passports.

After five hours of waiting on the island, we finally got our passports and could head off. It is a pretty lengthy process as the guards need approval from the head office. It doesn’t seem like the most efficient system ever but if you want to get through via boat this is just how it goes. We had a kick-around with some local kids, watched the world cup, had numerous coffees, and pastries, and chatted amongst ourselves. Five hours passed quickly.

 ATIDUP ISLAND

Leaving our lengthy process of border security behind us we got back in our boat and headed off in the direction of Atidup Island. It was finally time after 2.5 days of transit to enjoy the San Blas Islands tour. This is where the fun began.

Atidup Island was beautiful. No one else was there, it was our private island for the afternoon. A beach volleyball court was sheltered by plentiful coconut trees. The sun was out and the good times were rolling. All around us were beautiful yet empty, palm-tree-laden islands. Most of the islands we would see on the trip seemed untouched or occupied by one small bamboo hut.

Coconuts and beers were available but Josh and I opted to get straight into the water to snorkel the nearby reef, which turned out to be amazing. A huge shelf of the reef drops down into the dark abyss. Hundreds of fish swam about the brightly colored coral. We even found a tunnel that we held our breath through for a few nervous moments!

Back on dry land we grabbed a coconut and settled into a chair. The local Kuna tribe from Caledonia village had sent a boat of talented kids to perform a traditional dance. They are the champions in the region and it showed. It was a great show for the kids, some as young as five getting in on the action with flutes and dancing.

In the distance, the sun began to set over the layers of mountains in the Darien Gap. From beneath the palm trees, we watched the early colors develop. We jumped in the boat to watch the final moments of the sunset, which spectacularly lit up the dense layer of clouds above.

CALEDONIA ISLAND

We arrived after sunset at Caledonia Island, which would be our home for the evening. It is the main Kuna Island in the San Blas Islands. The village is home to 900 people, 600 of which are children. The Kuna people sleep in hammocks, eat a lot of seafood and the kids love soccer. They have a rich history and have overcome a lot throughout the years.

There is just one hostel and restaurant on the island, both of which offer luxuries like beer for sale and allow alcohol consumption. Alcohol is not allowed outside of the hostel or restaurant. We had a big group dinner of octopus, fish, and vegetables before heading back to the hostel for a few drinks.

DAY 2

Our accommodation at Caledonia Island was simple but everything we needed. The bungalow-style accommodation hung out over the water and one side and was an epic spot to welcome the new day. Our legendary crew made us a breakfast of fresh fruit, Kuna bread, chia seeds, peanut butter, coffee, and tea. The food was really good throughout the whole trip but breakfasts with fresh tropical fruit were my favorite.

After quickly packing up we set off for a big day of adventures on our San Blas Islands tour. In the San Blas Islands archipelago, there are 365 different islands and on this trip, we would be setting foot on five of those! We boarded our boat and settled in for a 2-hour drive. It would be the longest boat ride of the adventure. You get to spend 90% of your time on the islands and 10% (8 hours) in the boat throughout the entire 4 days, which is prime.

PELICAN ISLAND

The waves weren’t too bad for most of the trip to Pelican Island but I was definitely glad to be on a boat for 2 hours and not a sailboat for 4 days. Two hours was enough. We rolled into Pelican Island, another deserted island for our group of 13 to enjoy for the afternoon. One of the great parts about this San Blas Islands tour is that it wasn’t rushed. Sometimes on a trip or island hopping adventure, you get one or two hours on an island. We would get 3-5 hours. It meant you could play volleyball, explore, and have lunch but also wind down and read a book. You didn’t get to the accommodation at night completely wrecked from trying to fit it all in.

Beach volleyball fast become the activity of choice for our crew. It’s always risky spending four days in tight quarters with a group of others but I think the adventurous nature of this trip ensures everyone on board loves the beach, and being outdoors, and wasn’t looking for a luxury, glamping experience. Everyone was keen to get involved with activities, games, or exploring.

Josh and I shot some hoops on the jungle basketball court despite both scoring 1/50 shots. It’s just how you look in the photo right?

After another amazing lunch of quinoa salad, pasta salad, and chicken, we lay on the beach watching small sailboats ferry coconuts to and from the villages.

TUPILE (REVOLUTION ISLAND)

After our relaxing afternoon at Pelican Island, we docked into our home for the night, which was Revolution Island. It got the name after being the central hub for the revolution when the Kuna tribes came together here to take back their land. Now, Tupile, is a peaceful village with kids playing volleyball and soccer, older women making bracelets.

We went on a short tour of the village but Josh and I got sidetracked and ended up losing our group and getting involved in some games and soccer with the local kids. It was a crazy afternoon of laughs and fun hanging out with the kids and teenagers of the village.

Dinner at Tupile was amazing! The crew made chicken burritos, Panama-style, and a pumpkin sauce. It was incredible the quality of food they were coming out with as they cooked from small islands with ingredients we had brought in coolers from Colombia.

Our beds for the night would be hammocks. I had never slept in a hammock before so this was a first for me and it ended up being more comfortable than I had expected. I slept in shorts and a t-shirt without even a blanket, although some in our group used blankets that had been brought.

ISLA PELICANO

Another day, another island. We set off from Tupile and made our way to Isla Pelicano. It took about an hour and we arrived mid-morning. The island required almost no exploring as it was about fifty meters across the island at the longest point, which made it a sweet little spot to hang out on the sand, read a book and fly the drone!

The snorkeling at Isla Pelicano was pretty cool. While we didn’t quite find any epic reef, there were so many starfish and we even came across a spotted ray only a few meters out from the shore. You can tell this is a region with a diverse array of wildlife. Dolphins, fish, rays, and everything in between had been spotted during our San Blas Islands Tour.

Lunch was outstanding once again with multiple healthy salads and tuna baguettes. It’s amazing that the best, healthy food we had during our time in Colombia/Panama was on a deserted island in the middle of the ocean! The crew really rocked it at every meal.

This island was beautiful, but it wasn’t until I sent the drone up to explore that I saw how epic the reef system was around Isla Pelicano. Huge drop-offs from the shelf into deep blue water create an epic contrast. Giant blue holes look like perfect spots to snorkel, explore and watch the native marine life.

COCO BANDERA ISLAND

After Isla Pelicano, we made our way to our headquarters for the night, which would be Coco Bandera Island. It was a beautiful little island, about 100 meters long. It was adorned with palm trees and white sand with a few huts for sleeping, cooking, and the local Kuna people. We slept in hammocks inside the bamboo and leaf huts and eat our meals out in the communal hut.

Luckily the huts had strong roofs because that night a huge storm hit us. We managed to stay dry and despite the storm, it wasn’t cold, just very wet!

Coco Bandera Island has a volleyball court, which our crew made the most of for several hours! There was also some great snorkeling to be had and we even watched a few dolphins cruising around the island. Not long ago a huge sea turtle came ashore to lay her eggs. The hatchlings had already scampered out to sea before we arrived.

We spent the night enjoying a few beers, which were available for $2 a bottle on the island, and some rum we had brought from Colombia. Sat around a bonfire on Coco Bandera Island in the middle of the ocean was the perfect end to our last night of the San Blas Islands tour.

We packed up at Coco Bandera Island and enjoyed a relaxing morning in the sun. After lunch, we made the 1-hour boat trip to the port in Panama. Here we loaded into jeeps organized by San Blas Adventures and made the 3-hour journey through the jungle to arrive at our Hostel. We were pretty damn tired and dirty from our epic trip so we showered up and got a good night’s sleep at Mamallena Hostel in Panama City. If you want to book a night of accommodation at Mamallena for the night after your trip you can click here .

WHAT TO PACK FOR A SAN BLAS ISLANDS TOUR

I went pretty basic in terms of packing but there are some key things to consider while packing your bag. You will need a daypack with all of your gear as your big luggage will be wrapped in plastic and taken from Colombia to Panama and you will only have access to it after the trip. Essentially they transport it there for you so you will wave goodbye to it in Colombia and see it at the end of the trip. This means you need to pack everything you need in your day pack. Here is what I recommend packing for the San Blas Islands tour.

Another point to note is that there will not be electricity along the way. So a power bank is necessary if you want to charge your phone and camera.

  • Daypack: For the last 3 years I have traveled the world with my Victoria Tourist Camera Laptop Backpack . It is only $60 on Amazon and one of the few camera backpacks that hold your camera and 3 lenses in a padded, easy access pouch, a 13-inch MacBook Pro and still have room for everything else. I’ve talked about how good this bag is to so many people that lots of my friends have traded in their expensive Lowepro bags for my budget backpack because it is the best all-rounder for a backpacker who takes photographs and uses a laptop. You can check it out on Amazon by clicking here .
  • 2 T-shirts or tank tops
  • 2 Boardshorts or shorts
  • Reusable water bottle:  Generally for me, the Hydro Flask has always been the best bottle to keep your water cold throughout the day and a great way to not use a ton of small plastic bottles. On this trip, you can buy gallon plastic bottles, which is still better than lots of small plastic bottles. Each morning fill up your Hydro Flask from your gallon and you are good to go! You can check out the Hydroflask and pick a color you like by clicking here .
  • Flip-flops/Sandals:  You won’t need shoes on this trip so save space by just packing a pair of flip-flops or sandals.
  • Toiletries: I literally just packed soap, deodorant, toothbrush, and toothpaste. For me, island living is not a fashion parade. Bring the essentials but leave the beauty products and hair straighteners in your big bag!
  • Power Bank: I’ve used a lot of power banks and the most reliable and long-lasting is the Anker Powerbank . It has a dual USB-slot and it never drains itself or magically appears to be dead like others I’ve had in the past. I can charge my camera batteries and my phone multiple times with this gem. You can check the Anker Powerbank out on Amazon by clicking here .
  • Camera Gear: Your camera phone may be enough for you. Obviously, I packed a lot more to shoot the whole trip. If you want to check out the gear I use to capture photos on this trip and all of the trips I take across the world you can click here. I use a drone, GoPro, Sony Action Camera, DSLR camera and my iPhone.

I hope this blog post convinced you to explore the San Blas Islands via boat during your journey from Colombia to Panama City. Like I mentioned above it is only an extra $100-200 to do the entire tour than to fly direct. Therefore unless you are in a rush this is the best way to explore the San Blas Islands and transit to Panama to continue your travels.

It was an absolute blast thanks to our guide Svea and her crew who made sure everything was always organized and we were never hungry! I can’t recommend this experience enough so I hope you guys get out to the San Blas Islands and be sure to message me when you do with a photo! Let me know if you have any questions about the trip. You can email me at [email protected] or contact me via direct message on Instagram.

Beautiful pictures and story. We would love to go there. May I ask how you got permission to fly your drone? Thanks in advance!

I read a lot of your articles and every one of the articles are extremely useful. I also might want to contribute an article on your website page. I have been composing a lot of articles and might want to distribute them on your site. Desire to get a positive reaction from you.

Nice blog. I was going to do the sailing trip from Cartagena but after reading this, I signed on withSan Blas Adventure. I used the link to save 5% on the trip and the money saved mostly paid for the Anker Powerbank you also recommended. So a worthy read!

Day 1 Arrival in Bogota Today we arrive in Bogota, Colombia and transfer to our hotel. Also known as Santa Fe de Bogota, or the 'Athens of the Americas' (owing to Bogotanos' reputation for politeness and civility), Bogota is set at an altitude of over 2600m (8,600 feet) with high ranges of the Cordillera to the east. This captivating urban center has a rich cultural life and beautiful architecture. Like any self-respecting capital city, Bogotá is the country's capital of art, academia, history, culture and government. This is Colombia's beating heart. Overnight in Bogota. Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Bogota: Paloquemao Market, Cerro Monserrate & Gold Museum This morning we will visit the Plaza de Mercado de Paloquemao, the most famous flower and food market in Bogota. This is the focal point where the produce of the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, the fertile Andes and the tropical jungle meld together. The market is divided into sections: flowers; fruit, vegetables and aromatic herbs; and meat and fish. A visit here will engage all of your senses, and provides us with a great insight into Colombian customs and local living in Bogota. Next we take a cable car to Cerro Monserrate. Some amazing views can be had from this great vantage point (weather dependant). Monserrate is crowned with its easily recognizable church and is a place of pilgrimage due to its statue of Senor Caido, the fallen Christ. Cerro de Monserrate is sometimes called the 'mountain-guardian' of Bogota, and has been a place of religious pilgrimage since colonial times. Afterward we discover the best spots of street art in Bogota, where the most famous artist of the graffiti around the world have come to out their ideas in the walls of the city. Continue to the old quarter of La Candelaria and walk through the Plaza de Bolivar, stop at the well-known 200-year-old restaurant, La Puerta Falsa, to try the local typical sweets and desserts. We also visit the Botero Museum, home to some of Fernando Botero's finest pieces. Fernando Botero is the most widely recognized Colombian painter and sculptor. Today the museum houses one of Latin America's most important international art collections. The museum consists of over 100 works of Fernando Botero, and some of the other highlights include works by Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, and Henri Matisse. We finish our day at the world-famous Gold Museum, regarded as the finest collection of gold from pre-Hispanic times. This museum has some excellent, well laid out exhibitions with explanations in English. Overnight in Bogota. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Bogota: Catedral de Sal & Paso Fino Horse Ranch This morning we travel north to Zipaquira where we visit the Catedral de Sal. The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá (Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá) is an underground Roman Catholic Church built within the tunnels of a salt mine 200 meters underneath a mountain. This is not only a popular destination with travellers, but also an important place of pilgrimage in the country. This cathedral is an engineering feat under the earth's surface, part of the salt mines that date back from the Muisca period. Curving and twisting tunnels descend into the Roman Catholic Church, passing 14 small chapels representing the Stations of the Cross, illustrating the events of Jesus' last journey. Each station has a cross and several kneeling platforms carved into the salt structure. Upon leaving Zipaquirá, we’ll visit a traditional hacienda, one of the most traditional estates on the outskirts of Bogotá. Here you will enjoy the best of the local gastronomy by trying the typical ajiaco (chicken and potato soup) for lunch, and afterwards attend to private and exclusive exhibition of the famous Colombian creole "paso fino" horses. We return to our hotel (due to our early departure tomorrow and included lunch today, dinner is on your own this evening). Overnight in Bogotá. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Lunch

Day 4 Bogota - Fly to Cafetera Region & Coffee Experience Early this morning we transfer to Bogota's airport for our 30-minute flight to Pereira, one of the cities located near the Colombian Coffee Triangle, a UNESCO listed area known for its breathtaking deep green landscapes and the unique culture and traditions of the region. Having shed years of isolation imposed by surrounding civil war and the central Andean range that marks its eastern limit, coffee country has become the heart of Colombia's nascent "rural tourism" industry that fuses history, ecology, and know-your-roots national pride. Once landed, we'll have a hands-on coffee experience covering the cultivation, harvesting, roasting, and tasting processes of coffee production, from the seed to the roasted bean. The rich volcanic soil together with the climate and the topography make this region ideal for the cultivation of quality coffee. Our overnight point is Salento, situated in the heart of the coffee region. This is one of the oldest towns in the department of Quindio and probably the smallest. Startlingly well- preserved, Salento offers us an opportunity to enjoy a traditional coffee settlement. Set amid gorgeous green mountains, this small town survives on coffee production, trout farming and, increasingly, tourists, who are drawn by its quaint streets, typical paisa architecture, and its proximity to the spectacular Valle de Cocora. PLEASE NOTE that hotels in the area are relatively small and simpler with respect to the amenities on offer. Our preferred choice is clean and comfortable and quite charming, but please do not expect a lot of "frills" or assistance with your luggage. We may also need to walk a short distance (15-20 minutes) to the restaurant where we will have our evening meals; we suggest bringing a small flashlight and, as always, sturdy walking shoes with well-treaded soles. Overnight near Salento. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5 Salento: Barbas Bremen Nature Reserve We begin our day by visiting the reserve of Barbas Bremen, an easily-accessible nature reserve filled with hundreds of wild species, such as the howler monkey, butterflies, and myriad birds. Along our +/- 2 km leisurely walk, we'll explore the surrounding river, and forest ecosystems (your Tour Leader will provide more details on the nature of our excursion the night before). Overnight near Salento. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6 Salento - Cocora Valley - Fly to Medellin This morning we visit Valle de Cocora located to the east of Salento. Here we will enjoy a walk in the valley and see the famous Palma de Cera (wax palm) growing abundantly along the hillsides.* Towering high, this palm makes for the rather strange but beautiful scenery. Back in the 80s, this place was declared a sanctuary for the protection of Colombia's national tree, also home of the endemic yellow-eared parrot. We then return to our hotel, check out, and catch our flight to Medellin, transferring to our hotel located in the modern neighborhood of El Poblado. This is Colombia's 'second city' and the capital of 'Paisa' culture. Medellín is a forward-thinking city, which has reinvented itself since the dark days of the drug cartels. With Colombia's most extensive integrated public transport system, this city is a 'pioneer' in terms of social reform and offers a slick uptown district with an international feel. Overnight in Medellin. * Please note that viewing the trees involves the need to walk on hilly terrain some distance away from where our transport is parked. The surface is "natural" (ie not paved) and can be slippery if it has rained. By this point your Tour Leader will be familiar with your abilities and, if you have concerns about your suitability, please consult with them prior to the excursion. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7 Medellin: City & Area Touring Today we will enjoy a guided tour through Medellin, the "City of Eternal Spring". We walk through the historical and cultural centers where we learn about Colombia's controversial yet fascinating history. Having gone through several periods of significant transformation, the Medellin of today is an inclusive city, where every inhabitant has the space to express themselves and participate in social change. Much of this is due to the efforts made to improve the quality of life of Medellin's inhabitants following the difficult decades of the 80s and 90s. On our visit, you’ll have the chance to learn more about this city and the art, music, and food culture that has developed during its gradual transformation. We enjoy the urban street art in the comunas of San Javier, the typical and avant-garde street food on the boulevard of Parque del Rio, and the massive sculptures by Fernando Botero in the heart of Medellin’s city center. We continue to the Medellin Memorial Center, a blast from the past, displaying the dramatic history of cartels and gangs that struggled for control of the city. After a break for lunch we head to Parque Arvi, a large natural reserve located above the city that has several paths that weave their way through magical forests and amazing landscapes of the Andes Central Mountain Range. After arriving by cable car from Medellín, we visit the village of Santa Elena, best known for its large, ornate flower arrangements displayed annually at Medellin’s Flower Festival. The people of Santa Elena have learned how to create colourful shapes, figures and even faces out of flowers – a tradition that has been handed down to them over many years. On this visit, you'll even get a chance to chat with a flower farmer, or silletero, and stroll through a flower producing farm, taking in all the lovely fragrances. Overnight in Medellin. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8 Medellin & Guatape Today we get away from the hustle and bustle of Medellin with an excursion to the nearby (2- hour drive, each way) village of Guatape. Guatape was relocated to its present spot after the construction of the Guatape hydroelectric dam. Since its foundation, all the inhabitants of the town began the tradition of decorating their houses with the unique stories of their families, their livelihoods, and the events that have marked their lives. As we explore the streets of Guatape, you’ll be impressed with the amazing, colourful walls and original art. You’ll also have the chance to visit the big rock of El Peñol, a huge monolith that faces a picturesque lake, the perfect postcard shot of the day. We return to Medellin. Overnght in Medellin. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 9 Medellin - Fly to Cartagena: Old Town Walking Tour This morning we fly to Cartagena. Located on Colombia's northern coast and facing the Caribbean Sea, Cartagena de Indias is the undisputed queen of the Caribbean coast. Founded in 1533 by Spaniard Don Pedro de Heredia, and named after the port of Cartagena in Spain's Murcia region, Cartagena de Indias was a major center of early Spanish settlement in the Americas. Today Cartagena beautifully preserves its colonial character with the assistance of UNESCO as a listed World Heritage Site. This afternoon we'll discover Cartagena's rich history and beautiful colonial architecture. You will learn about the culture of Cartagena and its interesting architecture, and visit such beautiful sites as Plaza de Bolívar, the Cathedral of Cartagena, San Pedro Claver Square, and San Pedro Church. We will stroll through the narrow shaded streets of the old walled city, where flowers cascade from overhanging wooden balconies. The Old City is nearly encircled by walls that stand 4m (12ft) tall and are as thick as 18m (60ft) in some places. Their strength has preserved some fascinating colonial structures. Cartagena's historic center is flat and relatively small, making it the perfect city for walking. You'll find a photo opportunity at every corner. Peek into doorways to see the cool tiled patios hidden from other passersby. Overnight in Cartagena. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 10 Cartagena: San Fernando Fortress & La Popa Monastery Cartagena is built on several islands located at the end of a bay; the marshes that originally surrounded these islands were filled in order to link the land to the coast. Several bridges provide access to and from the island, and one of these leads directly to the old city. A number of lagoons separate the suburban areas from the old city, whose centre is surrounded by magnificent ramparts. Today we visit San Fernando Fortress, located on Cartagena's island of Tierra Bomba at a strategic location for Spaniards to defend the city from corsairs. The most representative sight here is the Fortress of San Rafael, a well-preserved gem that endured many battles in its time. We'll also visit the fortress of San Felipe, a masterpiece of military strategy, before heading up to la Popa Monastery, located on the highest spot of Cartagena, where we can have a 360° view of both modern and historic Cartagena. Overnight in Cartagena (dinner on your own this evening). Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 11 Cartagena: Palenque & Leisure Time This morning we travel two hours to San Basilio de Palenque, a centuries old village and the first place registered as a free town for the slaves in all of the Americas, over 100 years before slavery was abolished. With the insight of a local guide, we are able to enter rustic homes, try local foods and drinks, hear traditional music, learn about a UNESCO recognized language and culture, and rub shoulders with some of the friendliest people in the country. After about a 90-minute visit, we return to Cartagena by way of Bocagrande and Manga. You are then free to find lunch and enjoy an afternoon of exploration before we meet later this afternoon, when colonial carriages will take us for a ride around the city before our final dinner. This afternoon may want to visit the local Gold Museum with its amazing and priceless national collections, and interesting rooms that recreate the region's Amerindian ethnic groups. Though small, this museum offers a fascinating collection from the Zenu (also known as Sinu) people, who inhabited the region of the present-day departments of Bolívar, Córdoba, Sucre and northern Antioquia before the Spanish Conquest. Overnight in Cartagena. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 12 Cartagena, Colombia - Panama City, Panama Today we fly from Cartagena to Panama City. Overnight in Panama City. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 13 Partial Canal Transit We have an early morning pick-up at the hotel for the 15 minute drive to the port of Balboa where we board the passenger ferry that will take us on the world famous journey through the Panama Canal ("partial" transit; one-way). For many, this tour is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. At the MiraFlores Locks we experience how ships are raised 16 m / 54 feet in a two step process. This activity is achieved by sending water from Pedro Miguel's lake by gravity to fill the chambers where the ship is locked. Once the first set of locks is transited, the vessel arrives at the Pedro Miguel locks to be raised up to 26 m / 85 feet. Again no water pumps are used; they take advantage of gravity to transfer water from Gatun Lake, filling the last Chamber of the Pacific site. We cross the Continental divide and narrowest part of the Panama Canal arriving at the town of Gamboa, home to the dredging division, an important part in the functioning of the canal. The tour includes breakfast and lunch and a specialist guide. Light clothes, insect repellent, hat, sunscreen and very comfortable shoes, are suggested. Do not forget your camera! Overnight in Panama City. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 14 Panama City & Interoceanic Train* Today we travel by bus to Portobelo, once the main port of entry and exit for all of South America. The exchange of merchandise took place annually at Portobelo in the form of a fair which lasted from 30 to 60 days. During this time, this sleepy little place was a beehive of activity. Transactions frequently totaled from 10 to 12 million gold pesos. These fairs took place once each year until 1738 when, as a result of continual attacks by pirates, Spain was forced to abandon the Isthmian route for the longer but more secure one around Cape Horn. The frequent pirate attacks forced the Spaniards to adopt a convoy system. Each year two fleets of 40 to 70 ships sailed from Spain, one bound for Veracruz, the other for Portobelo. Our visit / tour also includes the Maria Chiquita coastal area. For our return to Panama City, we proceed to Colon where we board the Interoceanic Train for a scenic one hour journey back to the capital.* The Panama Railroad became the first transcontinental railway when it was completed in 1855 -- of course, a "transcontinental" line is a lot easier to make when you've only got 50 miles to cross! The California Gold Rush brought the new railway lots of business; eventually it was sold to first the French, and then the Americans, in conjunction with the efforts to build the Panama Canal, and it eventually passed to Panama in 1979 under the terms of the Panama Canal treaty. Now it's a private venture, completely rebuilt, with elegantly refurbished passenger coaches. The passenger trade is just a sideline, though. The real business of the railway is freight, moving containers between the Atlantic and the Pacific in less time and at lower cost than a canal passage. The train follows the canal and runs across narrow artificial causeways in Lake Gatun that are indeed spectacular, and the ambiance of the train is very pleasant. We will also go to Aguas Claras to see the new set of locks with their fascinating overflow tanks. * PLEASE NOTE: The above described excursion was discontinued due to pandemic and, though we were hopeful that this service would resume starting from late 2022, it is quite possible/probable that this situation may be indefinite. If service has not resumed for your chosen departure, we will accomplish this distance by bus instead. Should this suspension go beyond 2023, we may remove mention of the train from this day's description (current as of July 2023) Overnight in Panama City. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 15 Parque Metropolitano & Amerindian Village Today we head north of downtown to Parque Metropolitano, which protects vast expanses of tropical semi-deciduous forest within the city limits and serves as an incredible wilderness escape from the trappings of the capital. Our walking route takes us to 150m-high mirador (lookout) with panoramic views of Panama City, the bay and the canal all the way to the Miraflores Locks. This afternoon we visit an Embera / Choco Amerindian village. We take a boat along the route commonly used by the Indians for their daily transport along the river. A short walk through a forest follows, with a local guide to explain botanical novelties and the culture of this authentic village. We return to Panama City. Overnight in Panama City. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 16 Panama City - David, Chiriqui Highlands Today we are picked up at our Panama City hotel and transferred to Panama City's Albrook domestic airport where we board the scheduled flight to David in the province of Chiriqui.* This enchanted land is the Chiriqui Highlands, the part of the Cordillera Central that defines the northern border of the province of Chiriqui. Primeval rainforests bedecked with clouds, noisy, chattering birds flash brilliant iridescent colours as they dart about their daily chores, flowering epiphytes bloom en masse high above the forest floor while gurgling streams glisten and tumble hurriedly over great boulders in their dance towards the sea. It is a beautiful landscape of cloud forests, volcanic peaks, coffee plantations and home to most of Panama's Guaymi Indians. * Due to 12 kilo weight restriction on this flight and on the flight from Bocas back to Panama City, we strongly recommend that you pack a smaller bag for the next few nights and leave excess baggage in storage at our Panama City hotel. Overnight in Chirqui Highlands. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 17 Chiriqui Highlands Today we will travel to Cerro Punta to explore the area with a local naturalist guide on a nature walk. This area is good for resplendent quetzal, black and yellow silky flycatcher, prong billed barbet, and the volcano hummingbird. From here we'll travel to the area of La Amistad International Park Headquarters. La Amistad is a bi-national park that stretches from Costa Rica into Panama, a small portion of which extends into the Chiriqui province encompassing mostly cloud forests. Here the land rises in excess of 1500 m / 4,950 feet and warm air ascends the mountains where it meets with cooler air and condenses into a persistent cloud cover. Cloud forests exhibit a unique ecosystem with an astonishing diversity of flora and fauna. We also tour Haras Cerro Punta, a thoroughbred breeding farm in a mountain valley between Cerro Punta and Guadalupe – the highest inhabited part of Panama. The 100-hectare farm is surrounded by one of the most fertile agricultural areas in the country. With an average population of 200 animals, the farm turns out racehorse champions for Panama and beyond. NOTE: The order of our Chiriqui sightseeing may vary due to weather, accommodation availability, and other logistical considerations. Overnight in Chirqui Highlands. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 18 Chiriqui Highlands - Bocas del Toro After a leisurely morning we prepare for our drive to Almirante on the Caribbean side of the country. En route we stop to view the impressive Fortuna Dam and spectacular waterfalls along the Continental Divide. We will be crossing the Palo Seco Protected Area that serves as buffer zone to La Amistad International Park. The transition from the cloud forests to the coral reefs of Bocas del Toro is impressive. In Almirante we are met by our boat and transferred to the island. Five hundred years ago, Christopher Columbus arrived at a tropical paradise he named Bocas del Toro. Overwhelmed by the most incredible contrasts of vivid colour and sheer unspoiled natural surroundings, Columbus decided to drop anchor and spend a bit of time in this idyllic place. Not much has changed since that pristine time with the exception of the provocative Calypso beat and the alluring accent of the Caribbean inhabitants. Bocas is the best place to sink your toes in the white sand, to explore lush tropical rainforests and coral reefs and to look for the faithful sea turtles that have come to these islands for millennia. Overnight in Bocas del Toro. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 19 Bocas del Toro Ninety-two percent of this island is covered by tropical forest that helps keep a natural balance of the ecosystem. This huge national patrimony has 200 species of plants, 55 amphibious and reptiles, 57 mammals, 200 types of birds, 1500 bugs, and more than 58 species of corals. Bocas del Toro Province is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north, Veraguas Province to the east, Chiriqui Province to the south and Costa Rica to the west. Most of the province is on the slopes of the Talamanca and Central mountain ranges, but the majority of its 93,000 inhabitants live in low-lying areas along the coast and on islands. The province contains the large Archipielago de Bocas del Toro at the mouth of the Laguna de Chiriqui, beginning 35km from the Costa Rican border. The chain consists of 68 islands and numerous mangrove keys. Around them are fields of coral, a titanic variety of marine life and water so emerald in colour that Christopher Columbus named the region Veraguas, a contraction of verdes aguas (green waters). Today we have a boat tour to the surrounding attractions of the island so you can appreciate the incredible beauty of this place. There will be time for swimming in the surf and walking along the coastline to Red Frog Beach where you will be amazed by a sort of symphony of rather non-musical chirping that sounds like it must be coming from crickets. When you look closer, however, you will be surprised to find that this strangely beautiful noise is coming from a small frog, about the size of your thumbnail. Overnight in Bocas del Toro. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 20 Bocas de Toro - Fly to Panama City: Panama City Touring Today we fly back to the capital and enjoy some city sightseeing on arrival. Our tour includes a visit to the ruins of Old Panama and Casco Viejo (the old city compound) which dates from the late 1600's. We will learn of the events in history leading up to the eventual movement of the capital city to its present location. Casco Viejo is home to monuments to Ferdinand de Lesseps and others who were instrumental in the ill-fated French attempt to construct a canal through Panama. Here we visit the Altar de Oro at the San Jose church. As it's name would suggest this large barouque altar is made of pure gold. The church was built soon after the first Spanish settlement was established on the Pacific Coast in 1519. In the 17th Century this settlement was abandoned and moved to it's present location on the small peninsula that that contains the San Felipe district of the city. When the church itself was moved so was it's most famous possession. Our tour ends with a visit to the Panama Canal Museum. Overnight in Panama City. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 21 Departure Today we depart from Panama City. BUEN VIAJE! Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Inclusions Breakfast and most dinners; some lunches (hotels and restaurants). All sightseeing and entrance fees for sites noted as 'visited' in the detailed itinerary. Gratuities for local guides, drivers, restaurant staff, porters (if available). Airport transfers for land & air customers and for early arriving / late departing land & air customers who book their extra hotel nights through us.

Exclusions International airfare to/from the tour. Tour Leader gratuity, some lunches, drinks, personal items (phone, laundry, etc), departure taxes, domestic and international air taxes (if applicable). Airport transfers for Land Only customers. Optional trip cancellation insurance. Our post-reservation trip notes offer further guidance on optional meal costs, shopping, and locally paid departure taxes.

Seasonality and Weather Colombia: Here the weather and climate are truly those of 'perpetual spring,' as understood in temperate latitudes. Nights are cool but never really cold, and at this height frost is unknown. The days feel warm in the sun but are never really hot. Rain and afternoon cloud are frequent, especially on the coast where temperatures and humidity are considerably higher. Panama: This tour is offered during the northern winter and outside hurricane season (though this region is not near historic hurricane tracks). Temperatures are high across the whole country throughout the year, though cooler at higher altitudes. The rainy season lasts from May to November.

Transport and Travel Conditions Land transport throughout by private air-conditioned motor coach, 24-36 seats depending on ultimate group size (see 'group size'). Though we will have some full bus days, road travel is not particularly arduous as there are plenty of stops of interest. Most roads are in good condition though winding on some stretches. Numerous walking tours on uneven surfaces. Most people are not seriously affected by altitude (2400-3300 m / 8,000-9,500 ft). We have numerous walking tours on uneven surfaces. Our excursion in Salento (Colombia) will likely involve simple Jeep-like transport, which can be bumpy and slow. On foot, this excursion also involves some walking on slopes, which can be slippery if it has rained. In smaller towns, we may also have to walk a short distance to restaurants for our evening meals. By this point in the tour, your Tour Leader will be familiar with your abilities and able to provide advice on your suitability prior to this and other excursions. Most people are not seriously affected by altitude in Colombia (2400-3300m/8,000-9,500 ft). Our difficulty level "2" rating refers to the above-mentioned busy days, walking tours on uneven terrain, lack of handrails (public and elsewhere, ie shower stalls), and fatigue that can be caused by heat and humidity and unfamiliar food and drink. Please note that porters are generally not available at smaller hotel properties outside of major cities; you will need to be independent with your own luggage as necessary.

Am I suitable for this tour? Please refer to our self-assessment form .

Accommodation Well-located, air-conditioned, mid-range hotels with en suite toilet and bath throughout. Smaller hotels in rural areas will be of a simpler standard and will likely not provide baggage handling. For more hotel information, please click on the "Map & Hotels" tab on this page.

How to get from Colombia to Panama by boat: 15 Things I Wish I Knew

There are a few ways to get from Colombia to Panama (or vice versa).

Overland is not one of them!

So, you’re left with these two options:

  • An international flights (cheap and fast, yet boring)
  • An ocean crossing by boat from Colombia to Panama (expensive and slower, yet adventurous)

I chose the latter!

Was it worth the money? And was the boat ride as rough as people say it is? I answer these questions and a whole lot more in this epic guide to 15 things I wish I knew about going from Colombia to Panama by boat.

Colombia to Panama by boat

Quick Navigation

December to April is the windy season

The windy season starts in December and continues until April.

This is considered a good time to travel by boat from Panama to Colombia as there is no rain. But you’ll have to make a compromise and deal with the wind instead.

Taking the sailboat vs speedboat from Panama to Colombia

There are two ways to make the crossing. The first is by speedboat, the other is by sailboat.

The sailboat takes a different route from the speedboat and is more exposed to the elements.

During the open ocean crossing, you won’t leave the sailboat for 32 to 46 hours. The constant rocking due to rough sea conditions often leads to severe cases of seasickness.

Because of this, many people choose the speedboat instead.

With the speedboat, you spend less time on the water and more time on land. Your starting point is closer to the San Blas Islands, and you sleep on these islands (and not the boat).

But it’s still a hell of a bumpy ride

I hate to break it to you, if you’re crossing from Panama to Colombia by boat, there’s no escaping the rough oceans. This is only during the windy season, of course!

“But what about the speedboat option?” you might ask.

It’s still bumpy AF!

I was not prepared for what was in store for me. Looking back, I can only laugh at how naive I was in thinking an ocean crossing would be a smooth ride.

When our guides gave us snorkeling masks, I thought they were joking. I can now confirm that they were not! These masks saved the day.

You will get soaking wet. Our speedboat was taking hard knocks and yes, some people still got seasick!

This was my experience in February so rather expect the worst but hope for the best.

speedboat from Panama to Colombia

You’re only on the boat for 2 to 3 hours per day

The speedboat crossing starts (or ends, depending on your route) in Capurgana in Colombia (not Cartagena).

This means you’re a lot closer to the San Blas Islands and have less distance to cover over the ocean.

You’ll stay on the islands and won’t be on the boat for more than 3 hours per day.

So yes, the conditions can be rough, but it won’t be for more than a few hours.

Instagram vs reality: The truth about going from Colombia to Panama by boat

The San Blas Islands are incredible. But as with all things in travel, there are two sides… The one you see on Instagram and the reality!

We explored the most pristine and picturesque islands during our trip. Palm trees, sandy shores, turquoise waters.

But it won’t be perfect all day, every day.

Here’s my reality! On day two of our crossing, we stopped off at a small sandbank in the middle of the San Blas. On a bright sunny day, this would have been the most spectacular location.

But on a windy, overcast day, it was a different story.

With no shelter, there was no escaping the harsh conditions. The entire group lay hopelessly on the floor waiting for the go-ahead to leave the island. It wasn’t exactly the island paradise I had expected.

It’s travel in the best way

Taking the boat from Panama to Colombia is certainly not for everyone. It’s not luxurious nor is it comfortable.

But it’s the best way to travel if you’re looking for adventure.

You’ve just got to be realistic and be open to all experiences you might have. Embrace it!

Which company to book with

If you take the sailboat option, you’ll be spoiled with choices when it comes to boat operators. There are numerous vessels available that offer different levels of comfort.

However, when it comes to the speedboat, you’re not left with many options.

San Blas Adventures is the most popular operator that manages speedboat trips from Panama to Colombia. They offer regular trips, are a safe and reputable company, and work with the local communities.

I booked my San Blas tour with them and have based this post on my experience. I personally paid for it myself and they didn’t know that I was a travel blogger – so you’re going to get the real and raw version!

Sailboat from Panama to Colombia

Your San Blas Adventure officially starts in Sapzurro

When traveling from Colombia to Panama, the sailboats depart from Cartagena in Colombia.

The speedboats do not!

Instead, the speedboat tours depart from a small town called Sapzurro close to the Panama/Colombia border.

Sapzurro in Colombia

It’s not really a 3 night / 4 day tour

San Blas Adventures advertise their crossing from Panama to Colombia as a 3 night / 4 day adventure.

And technically, it is. But if you book your trip with them, you’ll need 5 nights / 6 days.

Because it takes two days to get from Cartagena to Sapzurro, the starting point of your speedboat crossing.

So, remember to keep 2 additional nights free in your itinerary. I didn’t! This meant my time in Cartagena came to an end sooner than I had planned.

The speedboat is not the cheaper option

A reason why many people choose the San Blas Adventures boat from Panama to Colombia is that it’s supposedly the cheaper option (compared to the sailboat).

Yes – the upfront costs that you pay directly to San Blas Adventures is cheaper than the sailboat.

But these costs only include your travel and food from Sapzurro, Colombia to Carti, Panama. Nothing else.

There are other mandatory costs, like the additional 2 days of travel expenses and local taxes. These all add up and eventually make the speedboat trip more or less the same price as the sailboat.

Actual costs for San Blas Adventures boat from Colombia to Panama

The San Blas Adventures boat from Panama to Colombia is advertised as $495 for the 3 day / 4 night tour.

Here are the additional expenses that you will incur. There’s no avoiding these costs!

  • Kuna Yala Entrance taxes: $20
  • 4×4 Taxi from Carti to Panama City: $30
  • Bus from Cartagena to Necocli: 100 000 COP
  • Accommodation in Necocli: 50 000 COP

  • Accommodation in Sapzurro: 50 000 COP

Necocli is the gateway to the Darien Gap

Wondering why tourists don’t travel from Colombia to Panama by land? The Darien Gap is the reason!

It’s one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes.

Despite the presence of drug cartels, extortion by criminal groups, and risks of sexual assault, thousands of people, young and old, try crossing the Darien Gap to get further north into the USA.

You will witness the extent of this when you get on your boat from Necocli to Capurgana. Most migrants depart from this very same dock, carrying all their most valuable belongings in one small bag.

It broke my heart to see this firsthand and I’ve since become so much more aware of the struggle’s migrants face.

So be kind to people you meet, always. You don’t know what journey they’ve been on to get there and what hardships they may face in the coming days.

where to stay san blas islands

You’ll get to interact with the local communities

By choosing the speedboat option, you’ll spend each night on the San Blas Islands. You’ll visit the local communities that call the islands home and learn more about their way of life.

This was an incredible experience. We danced with the kids and played games with them. We also got to learn more about how the Kuna Yala live, their struggles and triumphs as well as how they fit into Panamanian culture.

It was fascinating!

You’ll need to wrap all your bags in plastic

If there is one thing I didn’t like about crossing from Panama to Colombia by boat, it was that you have to wrap all your luggage in black plastic bags. And with numerous layers!

This is to prevent your things from getting wet.

You can buy these black bags and tape from the local vendors at the port in Necocli or Carti (depending on where you’re starting from).

What to pack for San Blas Adventures Colombia to Panama

The accommodation on the San Blas Islands is basic

Some nights you’ll sleep in hammocks, others you’ll have dorm-style rooms available.

The facilities are rustic and basic, but that’s what you’re signing up for.

Thoughts on how to get from Colombia to Panama by boat

My boat trip from Colombia to Panama was one of the highlights of my 6-month backpacking trip.

Yes, it’s expensive. Yes, it’s rough. But the memories I have and the friendships I made will stay with me forever!

Culture and customs.

Colombian culture tends to revolve around the Four F’s: Festivals, Food, Fun, and Family. While this bold and beautiful nation loves to party, it’s also a very traditional, family-centered society, with many Colombians choosing to live near their families and remain at home until marriage.

With most Colombians being Catholic, religion plays an important part in daily life, and visitors will be able to see this themselves while traveling through Colombia. Hundreds of churches and cathedrals populate the large cities, while smaller chapels are dotted throughout the villages and rural areas. Religious festivals like Easter and Christmas are celebrated with gusto – after quiet times of reverence come the massive street parties, parades, and feasts. A variety of cultural influences collide at these events - Spanish, African, and Caribbean customs and traditions have been brought to Colombia over the centuries and shaped its vibrant culture.

The hallmarks and customs of daily life vary from region to region, with Bogota’s upwardly mobile citizens enjoying bars, driving cars, and having access to a wide range of technology, cuisine, and media. Colombia’s rural dwellers (subsistence farmers, plantation workers, and tribal groups) live a more simple existence in rustic housing and without traffic or the stresses of modern life. What unifies most Colombians though, regardless of living conditions or class, is a fierce love of Colombia, respect for God, and loyalty to the family unit.

Geography and environment

Located in the northwest of South America, Colombia shares borders with   Venezuela ,   Brazil ,   Peru ,   Ecuador ,   and Panama, and is the only South American country to have a coastline on both the Pacific and the Caribbean. Home to a wide variety of natural environments and varying terrain, travelers can expect to see mountains give way to low-lying plains and tropical rainforests meet balmy beaches. Add sprawling metropolises, small farming communities, far-reaching plantations, fishing villages, and colonial-era towns, and you’ve got an ever-changing landscape at your fingertips.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Colombia has rich culinary traditions, quality fresh produce and loads of cosmopolitan bars, cafes, food stands and restaurants to visit. For a summary of what to eat in South America, check out   our in depth guide .

Things to try in Colombia

2. Bandeja Paisa

3. Ajiaco Bogotano

Fruit shakes are also widely available and offer travellers a chance to sample some exotic fruits that they may not have tried before.

History and government

Early history.

The area now known as Colombia was inhabited by Caribbean and Andean groups who lived in small communities based on organized agriculture. Spanish explorers were drawn to the land and fascinated by the proliferation of gold. The myth of El Dorado soon abounded, and the search for this land of gold soon became an obsession.

From the creation of Santa Marta in 1525, colonization spread rapidly throughout the rest of the country, leading to interest from neighboring countries that were also keen to exploit Colombia’s natural resources. Many Africans soon started to arrive as a part of the slave trade and provided a much-needed labor force for the colonizers. Life was tough for the slaves; however, African song, dance, and other afro-traditions helped to shape Colombian culture well into the future.

Recent history

Independence from Spain rose to the top of Colombia’s agenda after years of resentment. Simon Bolivar soon became a local hero, fighting for independence from the Spaniards. It took many years, but in 1819, Colombia was granted its freedom – Bolivar had fought his way into the minds and hearts of Colombia, where he is still revered.

However, this spirit of freedom was short-lived as Colombia descended into confrontation and civil war in the following years. Colombia seemed to be at the mercy of political opponents and guerrilla groups, weaving between periods of peace and extreme violence.

By the 1970s, Colombia had a new wave of criminal activity stemming from the lucrative cocaine trade. Pablo Escobar became one of the world’s most notorious (and wealthy) criminals by controlling most of the world’s drug trade. Colombia became a dangerous place to live (and travel in) during this period, yet has recently emerged victorious from these dark days. With vastly improved national security and a growing economy based on agriculture, textiles, and mineral mining, Colombia is welcoming back tourists with open arms.

Travelers might visit Colombia for the adrenaline sports, nature reserves, and beaches, however, retail therapy should also be included in that list, as Colombia’s shopping is surprisingly sensational.

It’s a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. The United States generally has strict quarantine laws.

How to cheaply travel from panama to colombia (or visa versa).

How to Travel From Panama to Colombia on a Budget

If you’re planning a trip that encompasses both Central America and South America, you’re probably wondering about the best way you can move between the two continents.

Normally this involves travel from Panama to Colombia or visa versa.

Sadly, due to dangerous guerrilla activity, lack of roads and treacherous jungle, making the journey by land across the Darien Gap, as it’s known, is pretty much out of the question. (And even I’m saying this, so it must be true!)

This essentially leaves you with 2 choices – to make the crossing by air or by sea.

When I was trying to make the voyage, I carefully reviewed all the options, saving you the time, so here they are…

#1 Flying to Colombia

colombia tours panama

You can easily travel from Panama to Colombia in the air, via almost any major city.

The main airline carriers are COPA and Avianca, who are the Colombian airline I made this journey with.

Avianca are normally a little cheaper and I highly recommend them. There are multiple flights throughout the day with times, distances and prices varying of course.

colombia tours panama

Don’t forget to check out Skyscanner for the best flight deals – you can easily scan the whole month and find the cheapest day to fly!

Budget Tip for Flying

Don’t worry about having to book these flight too far in advance however, as things don’t seem to shift much in price until the flight is within about 10 days time.

Often, in fact, you are better to wait until you are physically in the country of departure as buying a ticket from there, rather than internationally, will normally guarantee you a better price.

In addition, not booking flights too far in advance gives you a degree of flexibility that is always useful if you’re backpacking.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve booked a flight and then either not caught it or had to change the date.

So for short flights, especially within Latin America, I advise you book only when you are 100% sure about the date you want to travel.

My Experience

Personally, when I flew from Panama to Santa Marta in Colombia, I arrived into Panama City booked the flight that night and flew out the following day.

Even with this short notice period, it was not that expensive, as I only paid around $450 USD.

The flight was super early in the morning, but sometimes this is just what we have to do to get a good deal!

Normally a keen budgeter, I would have usually booked the flight much earlier, but as I was totally unsure of my plans at the time, I didn’t want to pay for anything in advance and then have to cough up more because I wanted to change the flight date.

Once I arrived in Panama City and checked the flight prices, I then actually worked out it would be better for me financially to get a quicker flight and arrive in the cheaper Caribbean coast of Colombia sooner, than it would be for me to stay in Panama City paying ridiculous rates in a below-average hostel and city.

Benefits of Flying

The obvious benefits of flying are that it’s quick, easy and safe.

The other great advantage is that it gives you a choice over your destination, getting you straight to where you want to go; if you want to check our Medellin first, for example, flying lets you do this.

Flying Verdict

Consider flying if you’re on time restraints and want to get into Colombia asap.

If you want to arrive at an inland destination, flying is also a good option. Plus, its scheduled and secure.

Downsides are that flying isn’t very adventurous and leaves you with a larger carbon footprint. I felt like a bit of a fraud flying, although I’m over it now!

#2 Hitching on a Cargo Boat

colombia tours panama

It is possible to hitch a lift on a cargo boat that will travel from Panama to Colombia.

I’ve had some hard-core traveller friends who’ve crossed between the 2 continents this way and it’s certainly an adventurous, not to mention cheap, mode of travel.

The normal process is to hang around the ports of Carti or Puerto Lindo (a drive from Panama City), speaking to everyone you can to try and ascertain who is sailing when and if they’ll take passengers and/or crew!

This can be a long process, taking anything up to a couple of weeks and you’ll definitely need commitment as well as steadfast determination, not to mention a pretty good grip of Spanish.

If you succeed however, your efforts are bound to be rewarded by a crazy journey and some great stories to tell in the future!

The main reason you might like to get across to Colombia this way, apart from a few stories of course, is how little it could cost you.

Normally you will pay only a minimal fee for hitching on boats (to cover the cost of food etc) and often work aboard the ship as payment for your crossing as well.

In reality however, friends I’ve known who’ve done this said it didn’t work out as cheap as they expected, not least because the journey took them over 10 days, plus the time they spent hanging around at the port.

They also said the price of food was a lot given what they ate – nothing but rice and beans!

On the other hand, hitching across to Colombia this way did allow them to get their bikes across to South America and this much was cheaper than having them shipped.

Hitching Verdict

If you’re looking for a crazy adventure, hitching on a cargo boat  to travel from Panama to Colombia could be for you.

I’d also say, hesitantly, that it’s a cheap option, but that really depends on the cost you agree with the captain and the length of the journey.

Probably don’t use the hitch option if you’re short on time, don’t speak much Spanish or don’t like roughing it.

You might also want to be aware of crazy captains, as you really will be in their hands!

#3 5-Day Sailing Trips

colombia tours panama

Probably the most common way of travel from Panama to Colombia for backpackers is to take one of the 5-day tours, which take in the beautiful San Blas Islands, owned by the indigenous Kuna people.

Usually you sail on a catamaran for 3 days around the San Blas before making the 2-day journey across the sea to dock at Cartagena, one of the jewels in Colombia’s crown.

Time at the San Blas is often spent snorkelling, eating fresh seafood and enjoying the paradisiacal environment of these Caribbean islands.

Arrangements tend to vary slightly from ship to ship, with different boats visiting different islands and snorkelling spots.

Other details can also alter, i.e. sometimes passengers are dropped off in other locations in Colombia apart from Cartagena or sometimes tours can take longer than 5 days due to weather, but the basic model remains the same.

Most of the major hostels in Panama City arrange these tours for their guests, helping to match them up with departing boats.

However, demand often outstrips supply, so many advise booking a tour at least a month in advance, otherwise you’ll probably find yourself hanging around in Panama City for a little longer than you had planned.

Sailing Tour Prices

These 5-day boat tours cost roughly $500 USD, including all food, water and any Colombian immigration formalities.

As such, they are a welcome option for many backpackers who consider them a great deal if taking a flight and not seeing the San Blas will set you back at least $300 USD anyway.

There are a few hidden costs involved in the tour option however; normally the boats actually depart either from Puerto Lindo or Carti.

To reach both of these ports you need to travel from Panama City and possibly spend a night out there too, depending what time your tour leaves in the morning.

To reach Puerto Lindo public buses are available, but if you leave from Carti, you must foot the cost of a private 4wd trip there as well (about $60 USD all up).

Disadvantages of Sailing Tours

Again I’ve had friends who have travelled between the continents via these 5-day tours and they had an absolutely great time.

However, I’ve also heard many horror stories of dreadful captains, seasickness and shoddy boat making the crossing a living hell.

Often tours are delayed, so anyone that has made travel plans or bookings in Colombia can risk missing them too.

The other negative is that when you book one of these tours, you are unable to guarantee what boat you might end up on, let alone who will be steering her and this can be a recipe for disaster.

Definitely try and do as much research as you can about which boat you will be going with, although this can be hard given that the hostels selling the tours are just third parties and in no way affiliated with any of the boats / captains.

If you do have a bad time, getting a refund is therefore totally out of the question.

Due to waiting lists for tours, many backpackers, desperate to get to Colombia asap, will just hop on the first boat available.

Again, this probably isn’t a good idea if you read more about some of the disaster trips online.

Sailing Trip Verdict

If you’re keen to get a slice of paradise, then probably a trip that incorporates the San Blas is the one for you.

The tours are a good deal if you want to visit the islands as well.

However, definitely avoid them if you have set or pre-paid plans in Colombia, as there is a fair chance you’ll miss them.

If you do know your moves in advance and you can book the tour weeks ahead of time, this might also be good, but if you rock into Panama City and need to get to Colombia asap, I’d say give it a miss.

Beware of seasickness too!

#4 4-day Speedboat Tours

colombia tours panama

These are shorter, less readily available boat trips, which also take in the San Blas archipelago as you skirt closer to the coast, island hopping all the way until you arrive at Sapzurro in Colombia, instead of Cartagena.

These trips normally take only 4 days and seem to be less popular, perhaps because they are less comfortable – I’m not sure where you sleep, but I’m guessing you string a hammock up on the islands.

They do however, avoid the arduous open sea crossing of the 5-day trip and you are therefore less likely to get any serious sea-sickness as a result.

Once you get to Sapzurro, it is then a $70 USD and 11-hour journey to get to Cartagena via boat to Turbo and then a bus.

This is a long and uncomfortable journey, but very straightforward if you are used to Latin American travel.

Sapzurro itself, however, is meant to be a beautifully underdeveloped, road-free, vehicle-free seaside village. I would’ve loved to have checked it out and recommend you do the same if you get a chance.

I don’t know anybody who has experience of getting across the Darien Gap this way and there’s not much information on the web about these trips.

This possibly means it’s a discontinued option for travel from Panama to Colombia.

However it’s still worth inquiring about them when you get to Panama City.

Luna’s Castle Hostel in Panama City advertise it on their website. This is also a great place to stay.

Speedboat Verdict

Get more info first, but looks like a potentially cheaper, quicker and better boat option for travel from Panama to Colombia!

#5 Flying to Puerto Obaldia, Panama

colombia tours panama

This is the option I really wanted to take. Flights from Panama City to the border town of Puerto Obaldia are run by the domestic carrier

Flights from Panama City to the border town of Puerto Obaldia are run by the domestic carrier Air Panama and are cheap, costing only about $75 USD.

Unfortunately, they only run a couple times a week, currently Monday and Friday and seem to be booked up well in advance, which is the reason I couldn’t travel across the border this way.

Sadly, it is impossible to get hold of the company by phone or email to confirm a booking and I have also heard of their system issuing you with a wrong ticket, which it is then impossible to get changed.

I have also heard you have to pay excess for heavy luggage, which seems to apply to any bag that hits their scale.

But hey, this is Latin America!

Nonetheless, if you get the chance to travel from Panama to Colombia this way I would recommend it.

Once you arrive in Puerto Obaldia, which is in the Darien region of Panama, you go through exit customs and then board a $15 USD boat to Sapzurro.

It is here you will clear Colombian immigration.

As discussed above, Sapzurro is meant to be an incredibly beautiful part of Colombia that I wish I had seen.

I would definitely recommend staying here a few days and enjoying the paradise setting.

For good or for bad however, Sapzurro is a remote village, only accessible by boat, and it therefore takes a whole day of travel to get to Cartagena or Medellin, so if you’re in a hurry this route is best avoided.

Puerto Obaldia Verdict

Adding together the total price of a flight to Puerto Obaldia, a boat to Sapzurro, a boat to Turbo and then a bus to Cartagena, this option weighs in at under $200 USD, which makes it excellent deal given it will ensure more comfort, security and safety than hitching on a cargo boat.

Sure you miss the San Blas Islands that the boat trips offer, but you do get to enjoy the wonderful Sapzurro instead and it’s certainly a more adventurous and off the beaten track mode of crossing the border. I think it could be a winner!

#6 Taking a Tour

Or finally, you can choose the easiest and most stress-free option when it comes to travelling between Panama and Colombia… and that is to take a tour.

Tours that move between both countries will organise this annoying border crossing for you and this means you can get everything organised in advance and just relax.

It will also give you the opportunity to experience some guided time in both these countries and see their best bits as well as learn a lot more about them.

Just enter your details below and I'll email it you - simple!

The sailing and speed boats are becoming more and more popular, as you are seeing the beautiful San Blas islands. However most of the trips are expensive and cost nowadays around 450 USD or even more. But there are also some smaller tour operator. I did my trip with MIA SAN BLAS a small company (www.miasanblas.com), can recommend them and the only charge 290 USD (with a price list, for what you pay on their website). There must be also others. Thus, if you look for more information in the internet, you can really save a lot of money. Good travels to all 🙂

Thank you so much for this up-to-date info Korbi, a real help for travellers out there now trying to decide what to do. Sounds like you found a good company too – money saving tips are always welcome here, so thank you again for sharing 🙂

colombia tours panama

Hi Steph and travellers out there,

excellent and inspiring work and blog, congratulations and thanks! Thanks also to Korbi for an update.

We also would like to share our experience because we think it could be interesting and helpful for travellers who are looking for more authentic, individual and economic ways for crossing the border.

Our experience traveling and working in Panama and Colombia!

We were traveling and working in Panama and Colombia for the last 1 ½ years (may 2016 – december 2017). During that period we realized throughout many conversations with travellers, that still there seems to be a lack of information about the border crossing between Central and South America.

Why we love your blog!

Thanks to your blog there is a new community growing which is eager to provide and share updated good quality information about the border crossing from Panama to Colombia. Would be great if this helps to open up the market for the border crossing and while promote the unique local infrastructure of the indigenous area San Blas Islands. Interaction between the indigenous Guna in San Blas and tourists is a win-win situation for both.

Situation in San Blas right now!

These days gringo speed boat companies and sailing boats all charge around 500 – 600 USD and prices are constantly rising. We know that a lot of companies overcharge and that a lot of this money stays in foreigner hands and does not go to the indigenous families and communities on the islands. We think new ways of flexible and authentic local border crossing options between Central and South America is what many travellers are looking for these days. For this reason, we would like to let more travellers know about different options for the border crossing.

New options and future trends!

We would recommend getting in contact with Mia San Blas. They are a family and Guna company who are not only offering tours between Panama and Colombia. They are also in the area and can give good recommendations for individual border crossings and useful hints about the Guna culture and way of life on the islands. They will also help you to connect with Guna on your way and save you from ‘just being a tourist😉’.

Why our experience was more authentic!

The San Blas Islands are Caribbean paradise. One of the main reasons these islands remain picturesque is due to the fact that the whole area is owned and protected by the indigenous Guna. Mia San Blas loves to share this passion for the Guna way of life. They are eager to provide useful information about San Blas in a very authentic and individual way. As Mia San Blas is a Guna company, they are on the islands and their information is always up to date.

If you are passionate about seeing all highlights in San Blas while crossing the border in a more authentic, no-gringo style and more economical way, Mia San Blas is a good address to plan your trip.

Hope that helps travellers for a more authentic and alternative border crossing. Would be also great to hear about other companies or new exciting ways for the border crossing in the future.

Happy travels, Katharina

Katharina, thank you so much for this incredible update and tons of info. WOW! It’s been a few years since I made this journey from Central America to South America, so I really appreciate the update. It’s great if we can help travellers find new, cheap, genuine, engaged and more conscious ways to travel. All the best

colombia tours panama

Wow, this is a great article. I wish I had found this site before doing the trip.

I just did the island-hopping speed-day tour last week and couldn’t be happier with it. San Blas is a magical place and I am so glad I didn’t skip it. I did a 3-day tour with San Blas Frontera, which is owned by a local Kuna guy who grew up in a Kuna village next to Puerto Obaldia and knows the whole San Blas area and culture quite well.

The trip started in Panama City where we got picked up and brought to San Blas. We spent two nights on two different islands (no hammocks, but comfortable beds in super cute huts made from natural material on the beach) and in between visited different islands and a Kuna village. The company helped with the entrance formalities to Colombia and on the third day we arrived in Sapzurro (yes, you really missed out, Steph, when you had to skip this place). We did the trip in a small group of six, which was perfect – I heard of boats going with 30 and more people…

I paid 295 USD which I found a lot cheaper than other options given the value for money. Everything, even the car ride from Panama City and the entrance fees was included. I only had to spend a few dollars for water and soda, which is not included. The boat ride was ok, it’s obviously not comparable to a plane seat but since you only spend short periods of time on the boat it’s totally fine.

From what I understood you can also extend the stay for more than three days or strip it down to two days if you are in a hurry.

Thanks Daniel, this sounds like a great trip indeed. Appreciate you keeping my readers informed of new and exciting options. The price seems pretty good too and with Sapzurro thrown in as well! Jealous!

Hi, I am a bit on a panicking mood as I was not aware that the controls on onward tickets can be rather though for Costa Rica and Panama. What was your experience? I would like to take the boat option and I am flying right now to Costa Rica with no additional tickets to go forward. Many thanks for letting me know

I think you’ll be fine Anja – worst case, you can buy an international bus ticket through the company TicaBus at immigration in the airport! Fear not!

colombia tours panama

Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to just buy a refundable air ticket out of the country? If you’re traveling slow it might take a while before you can refund it I guess.

Definitely another option to think about there Sam 🙂

colombia tours panama

I saw plenty flights today leaving Janusrt from Panama city to Medellin or Santa Marta in Colombia for about $130 to $150. So it’s pointless to go by boat. Just fly.

Thanks for the input Christian – much appreciated

colombia tours panama

This is an article anyone visiting Panama should watch, thanks for the tips! Also known as the crossroads of the Americas, Panama has much to offer. You can engage in water sports, spend time on white sandy beaches backing out to azure blue seas, as well as outdoor activities such as zip lining or trekking lush jungles.

However, there are tourist-targeting scammers and petty crime to be wary of.

Do be wary of fraudulent hiking tours, drink or food spiking, overcharging restaurants, overcharging taxi drivers, overnight cross border bus thefts, long taxi routes, shoe shine scam, fake police and many more!

Thanks David, a fascinating country indeed, but appreciate your advice on safety and scams, always good to be aware of these.

Hi, I’m traveling to Boca del Toros tomorrow and looking at ways to cross into Colombia a dew days down the track, I stumbled upon the MIASANBLAS article. So I went to their website. Their quoted price is USD275. However with the addition of food accommodation and land transport the full amount is over USD 500.00 for three days and two nights. I was unable to book anyway as the booking section was somewhat “frozen” I tried to send a message through the “contact” on their website and it wouldn’t go. Underneath was a warning, IN GERMAN, to use a valid email address. I must add that I’m not German, I looked for the translation. So back to my research

Yes back to research Maria, this does not sound like a good link or company to follow. Travel safe. Steph 🙂

colombia tours panama

Hey, i’ve been following your website quite a long, i’ve found it to be super interesting. Im going to share it asap on my facebook page! Regards

That’s great to hear, thank you 🙂

Someone with a large sailboat well organized for maximum occupancy could make a killing going between Puerto Obaldia and Colombia at a reasonable cost. Strange how nobody seems to have done it yet. No San Blas ripoffs, just engineless transport skimming through clear Caribbean waters. Efficient function as they say.

Seems logical Sam, but I presume there is some reason this isn’t happening already. Likely some “behind the scenes” explanations we’re not party to as travellers, along with possible regulatory / investment issues? Thanks for your thoughts though, Steph

Colombia Highlights 15 Days Tour

We took an 18-day guided tour in Colombia with GuidEcuador. Three days exploring the Caño Cristales area based out of La Macarena was our favorite part of the trip. It is spectacularly beautiful and very unique! In Bogotá, we had lots of fun on the city bike tour, and seeing the city from the top of Monserrate is not to be missed, either! Other highlights during our tour were the hike in Tayrona Park, seeing the wax palms in Cocora Valley, climbing the rock at El Peñol which provided a terrific view of the area, seeing all the colorful zocalos in Guatapé, a very informative and fun tour in Medellín, and some unique experiences getting to Cartagena that weren't planned! Colombia is a huge and very interesting country and we enjoyed the sampling! The local guides in different areas we visited were a tremendous asset. The Lost City Trek was hard for me (at age 76), but with great support from the guides and the others in our group, plus riding a mule on 2 stretches and a moto for the final descent, I made it!

I was pleasantly surprised on how many activities had been planned and how well coordinated everything was. Our guide Carolina was great, knowledgeable, friendly, accommodating, and she handled every situation in a professional and competent manner. I was somewhat puzzled at some of the itinerary choices. The first day meeting in Bogota was at 2 pm, when she talked about the things to do in the city (also sent us an email of points of interest) and we afterward had a tour of the neighborhood also pointing out places of interest to visit; however, after that we only had time for dinner and then the following day we left around 11 for the next town. There was absolutely no time to do any of the wonderful things she suggested. My husband and I had gotten there the day before and we got to do a few things on our own. It would have made more sense to meet at 10 or 11 in the morning to leave us more time to explore, or spend and extra day in Bogota. Also the following day we did not get to Salento until the afternoon after flying there, and, again, upon arrival we met and had the town tour to point out wonderful places to eat, listen to music, shop, etc, but did not have any time to do any of those things. I had a lot of fun playing the game of tejo with the group, but was very frustrated that the itinerary did not leave time for anything else in the town except for a 15 minute quick shopping stop. The town was so pretty and there was so much to see it was sad to leave so soon. I think if we had left Bogota early in the morning we would have had more time in Salento. The hike to Cocora valley was the highlight of the trip. It was beautiful and the guide Luis was great. Also the stay in the hacienda and tour of coffee plantation was excellent. Another puzzling part of the itinerary was to put us through a very long bus ride to Medellin that ended being 14 hours long. I get that the circumstances were out of control of the guide and the company (there was an accident ahead with two trucks), but it was already known that there was road construction which already slowed the trip considerably. Adding to that the fact that the trucks were recklessly driving up and down steep hills in construction areas led me to believe that the accident was just waiting to happen, and also put us at risk. Carolina did an excellent job on keeping us calm, but it was also very hard on her and us to had to go through this. It would had made a lot more sense to just fly to the Medellin and avoid wasting an entire day.We loved Medellin, the trip to Santa Helena to the flower farm, and Cartagena. Apart from some of the drawbacks me and my husband had a wonderful trip full of memorable experiences. The hotels were all good. I highly recommend this trip!

Private Immersive Cultural Tour in Cartagena with Day Trips

I very much enjoyed my time in Cartagena, Columbia, South America in 2022. I was told that the month of December afforded us mildness in regard to the usual warmer temperatures of other months. My Accommodations were comfortable and safe, and we had a magnificent hostess. Bernell's planning was high quality and I did not have to do anything except arrive there. I even had money exchanged before leaving the USA. One less detail for her to have to take care of upon my arrival. We, Bernell and I, made new friends in Cartagena and we are excited to be working with the dance leaders we met to host a Dancing in the Street joint project in the future. More details to come. It is my sincere hope that you all will accept her next invitation to "meet her" in a foreign or unique location, or allow her to plan a travel excursion for your family so you too can experience "travel like a local" -- I guarantee you will be delighted that you did.

Colombia: Coffe Tour Bucaramanga and Chicamocha Canyon (Santander) Hiking and Bicycle Tour

Colombia: Coffe Tour Bucaramanga and Chicamocha Canyon (Santander) Hiking and Bicycle

I just came back from Colombia and this bike/coffee tour was the highlight of my trip. The itinerary was well designed and thought out. The bike route was fantastic, consists of rail line, rolling hills, some challenging climbs, single track and a long downhill with a breathtaking view. Meals I tried along the way were local and very tasty. Coffee tasting, a coffee farm tour, and staying overnight at the farm was once in a lifetime kind of experience. The farm we visited had won a bunch of awards in prior years and the coffee we tasted was one of the best that I ever had. Flavor was complex and soothing. Then we went on a coffee farm tour where I saw different coffee production processes, countless of coffee trees, other tropical fruit trees, waterfall, and so many different types of birds. I got to spend a night at the farm which included a dinner and a breakfast prepared by the farm chef. Fantastic food. There were two cabins newly built at the farm. The room was rustic, clean and offered a fantastic panoramic view overlooking Bucaramanga city in the distance, the farm, and the mountains on the other side. In the morning I woke up to bird noise and a sunrise over the mountain. It’s a luxury hotel in the middle of the mountain. Next day we biked through pineapple fields, local villages, more coffee farms, local markets, and gorgeous Chicamocha canyon. I had to stop riding due to my physical condition shortly before a 5 mile downhill to the bottom of the canyon. That would have been so much fun. I got picked up by my sag vehicle when I needed to stop riding. The view at the bottom of the canyon was fantastic. I think what stands out the most besides food, bike rides, and coffee farm is a team running the tour. They made me feel safe and supported whole time. They catered to my needs such as distance of riding, bike routes, food and so on. They made the whole experience so much better. From I got picked up at the airport until I got dropped I pretty much didn’t have to worry about anything, and just was able to enjoy. I recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience a different part of Colombia away from tourists heavy areas. It offers a good balance of relaxation and physical challenge, excellent support, and an experience of a life time.

We had an amazing experience from beginning to end. Daniel was terrific in Bogota, very helpful and took excellent care of us. In Santa Marta we had Miguel Gonzalez from Expotour instead of Wilson since Wilson's knee was bothering him. Miguel was fantastic. He grew up in those mountains and knew everybody and everything about the flora and fauna. The food was fantastic, the beds very comfortable, and the general experience was fantastic. We felt we where in excellent hands all the way around. The trek thru the mountains was pretty hard - a bit more than I expected but I realize it's more of my naivete than anything. One thing we learned is just go by what Miguel suggested; it was always the best idea after looking over our choices. I really, really loved it.

Excellent. Thanks ☺️
This was an amazing itinerary! I was a single female traveler and felt safe at all times. I had the best group guide Martin, who was super friendly, knowledgeable & went above and beyond to show us a great time. I have a lot of dietary restrictions & Martin really tried his best to accommodate me, I am so grateful. Unfortunately I had an emergency & had to leave on day 4 so my trip was disrupted. I would love to return to Columbia in the future. This was an action packed itinerary. I highly recommend this tour & tour guide Martin to anyone who is active & loves to explore.

Panama VS Colombia – Where Should You Go and Why?

I have traveled to both Panama in Central America as well as Colombia in South America. So here’s my fair comparison of Panama Vs Colombia if you are trying to decide between these two destinations.

Panama Vs Colombia – Deciding Factors

Since both countries are spectacular and on most travelers bucket list, it all boils down to personal choice in the end and your own criteria to differentiate between the two.

For me, beaches and nature play an integral role while choosing a travel destination .

For someone else it could be culture, history, shopping or multitude of other factors that come into play while comparing.

Panama Vs Colombia – Beach wise Comparison

Both countries have stunning coastlines. My very favorite and unique beach experience ( As a beach bum , I am often found sprawled on a sun bed) in Panama was visiting the epic Starfish beach in Bocas Del Toro . Surely, this beach with hundreds of starfish on the ocean floor was both stunning and a very surreal experience for me.

Starfish beach Bocas del toro panama

However, with the never ending vast and completely isolated shorelines in Punta Gallinas Colombia  – the extreme part of the world – took my breath away. I have never seen anything like this in my life.

Tarao Dunes punta gallinas

The never ending sand dunes melting into milky white shores was a sight to behold. Plus with ZERO tourists, restaurants or beach shacks, this isolated northernmost tip of South America was simply spectacular.

When I first laid eyes on the beaches in the desert of La Guajira , I was blown away.  How can any place be so offbeat, completely still, peaceful and gorgeous – like a part that’s cut out from the world. You kind of have to be prepared for the “rawness” of it all.

goat la guajira

In short if you are looking for a unique beach experience, both countries have it but if you have to pick one, Colombia takes the cake for me. There is absolutely nothing like Punta Gallinas.

Panama Vs Colombia – Language Barriers

comuna 13 animals art

Colombia is in South America, which means if your Spanish skills are poor or non existent, you will have a tough time getting around.

In Panama I found there were more English speakers though knowing Spanish can be a boon for visiting both countries.

Language wise, Panama was easier to navigate for me (As a non Spanish speaker).

Panama Vs Colombia – Things to do and Attractions

In Panama, I only visited Panama City and Bocas Del Toro.

In Panama city, the prime attraction is the Panama Canal and I got to visit it for free (here’s how you can do it too – shhh ). Panamanian food is also delicious and Bocas Del Toro is a great getaway to put your feet up and relax.

However, Colombia is huge with so much to see and do. You can get spoilt for choices and even if you spend weeks exploring Colombia, you will only be able to see very little of this vast country.

During my trip to Colombia, I covered – Medellin ( I even got a tattoo for Comuna 13 GPS coordinates ), Cartagena , Tayrona , Minca (which turned out to be one of the best birding destinations for me), Guatape , and of course the surreal paradise of Punta Gallinas .

Panama Vs Colombia – Safety wise Comparison

Panama is known for its relatively low crime rate and stable political environment. However, you still need to exercise caution in some areas, particularly Panama City’s Casco Viejo neighborhood, where pickpocketing and other petty crimes can occur.

Colombia, on the other hand, has a reputation for being a dangerous country due to its history of drug-related violence and political instability.

However, in recent years, the country has made significant progress in improving its security situation, particularly in major cities like Bogota and Medellin.

comuna 13 views

This is very apparent when you visit Colombia and you can feel the Pablo Escobar devolation among the countries youth has been diminished by the steps taken by the government. This does not make Colombia any safer and it is best to be street smart and exercise caution where you go. Isolate desert of La Guajira can also be daunting after sun down as a solo traveler.

Ideally, if you can visit both (since the distance between Panama and Colombia is just 800 odd km), do it. Both are top tourist destinations. However, if you are short on time and have similar preferences to mine and are torn between Panama Vs Colombia, then visit Colombia for more things to do, tons to explore and more bang for your buck.
