And what an experience a safari in Botswana is! This is where memories are made. Once home, your children may think back to what they witnessed on safari: from a pride of lion hunting, or an amazing sunset in the middle of nowhere; to a San Bushman teaching them to find water in the desert, or a dung beetle rolling a ball of poo. Your children will love it, but there are a few things to consider when planning a holiday to Botswana with kids. 6 Questions About Botswana Family Safaris
Answered by
Ariadne van zandbergen.
Is Botswana recommended for a family safari?
“Botswana can be an excellent choice for a family safari when planned carefully. Taking your children on safari is endlessly rewarding. Children have a unique way of looking at the world, and a safari is bound to be inspiring and educational at the same time. Botswana offers a very pristine wilderness experience – the perfect environment for a family adventure. The rustic camps and campsites are ideal for immersing the family in nature, away from the hustle and bustle of life back home. This is the kind of experience that brings families closer together.”
How old should my children be to go on safari in Botswana?
“Botswana is perhaps best suited to children above eight years of age. This is the minimum age requirement at many lodges. You can take younger kids, but this might require more planning and your options will be fewer. Botswana is a relatively expensive safari destination and the high cost might be wasted on children too young to appreciate the experience. With the right preparation, many kids above eight years old will be fascinated and eager to learn on a safari. Note, however, that walking safaris are not permitted for children under 12.”
How long do we need in Botswana?
“Depending on your children’s ages, I would recommend a safari in Botswana of about six to eight days. When going on safari, it takes a few days to get in the rhythm. There are the early morning wake-up calls, driving around most of the day, looking out for animals, etc. As your kids learn more, their interest will grow. The same is true for adults of course. Therefore, I would recommend a minimum time in the bush of six days. Longer is better, but you don’t want it to become stale either. Children often have a short attention span and can easily get bored. Ideally, you’ll leave while they are still loving it. It will make the memory a positive one and they’ll be keen to do something similar again.”
How much will a Botswana family safari cost?
“There are many variables that determine the price of Botswana family safari packages. A 7-day budget camping safari for a family of four starts at around US$6000. A 7-day mid-range lodge tour for a family of four costs around US$10,000, but luxury tours are priced higher. Some group safaris allow older children, but in most cases it is recommended to book a private safari for your family. To keep down costs, a camping safari could be a great option. Camping adds to the sense of adventure and most kids love it. If you and your kids prefer more luxury, you can also opt for a lodge safari. Make sure to check the minimum age restrictions though. Ask your operator about child-friendly camps and family specials. Some lodges will let children sharing a room with the parents stay at a reduced rate or even for free. For the best value, I suggest getting more than one quote from tour operators before booking your family safari. ”
What should we pack for our children for a family trip?
“Unless you have a lot of experience, you should put some extra thought into what to pack for your safari. Even more so for your children. They might want to take lots of stuff, but you obviously need to limit your luggage. Aside from luggage restrictions on your international flight, you should check the restrictions on domestic flights or bush flights if that is part of your itinerary. Even if you don’t have any local flights, the space in the vehicle for a road trip is also limited. You might be doing some wildlife viewing en route, so you don’t want suitcases on the back seats. Having said that, packing wisely for your kids will help to make the trip a success. Keep in mind that there will be a lot of time to kill on a safari: in the airports, in the lodges, and even on game drives. Make sure you have something to keep the little ones entertained. Maybe an Africa-themed book or coloring book, a favorite game or anything else that will keep them occupied when things go a bit slow. Although most lodges will go out of their way to cook child-friendly dishes, it might help to take some snacks along, especially if your kids are picky eaters. There is no reason to kit your kids out with an ‘Out of Africa’ outfit, but choose some easy-wear cotton clothing with muted colors. Also make sure you bring some basic medicines, especially antihistamines for insect bites and mosquito repellent.”
Is it safe to bring my children on safari in Botswana?
“Botswana is a safe and stable country. From the moment that you are picked up from the airport, your guide will look out for your safety at all times. Some activities, such as walking safaris, are not allowed for children under a certain age. These restrictions are put in place to keep your children safe. It’s a good idea to monitor your kids and keep an eye on them at all times while on safari. Choosing your accommodation carefully is a great way to reduce any risks associated with the locations. Many camps in Botswana are unfenced. Choosing a fenced lodge without river access might be a better choice when traveling with children.”

Best month for family safaris in Botswana?
The best time to travel to Botswana for families may be between April to October when conditions are great for viewing wildlife, rain is infrequent, and there are fewer mosquitoes in the area.
July in particular works best as this coincides with the school summer vacations. At this time, it can be cold in the mornings, around 6C/42F, but rising to 25C/77F later on in the day.
These dry months are a great time to see wildlife as they tend to congregate around water sources and are easy to spot.
How many days do you need on a family safari in Botswana?
A safari of six to eight days is recommended for families, perhaps longer depending on your kids’ ages. Safaris can take some adjustment as they involve early morning wake-up calls at 5am for sunrise drives as well as an afternoon or evening drive.
Taking this into consideration as well as the sheer number of wildlife and national park attractions to see in this incredible country, visitors should plan accordingly per the needs of their family and children.
Longer time periods are of course better, however families will need to decide on their own time requirements based upon budget, attractions they’d like to see, children’s needs and more.
Does Botswana have luxury family safaris?
Botswana is Africa’s most exclusive safari destination and each private reserve has just one or two luxury lodges guaranteeing a series of private experiences as you travel from one exquisite location to the next.
Expert guides will take your family on safari among big cats and vast elephant herds in beautiful deltas and deserts. Visitors can also head out by open vehicle, on foot, by canoe and even on horseback seeing almost no-one else on a family holiday you’ll treasure forever.
Botswana has around 100,000 elephants; far more than any other country, and a huge variety of other wildlife. The settings are idyllic, especially the Okavango Delta which is a network of shallow channels and fertile grassland and forest.
In a truly versatile Botswana family safari tour, your family can explore the landscapes and encounter the local wildlife by air, boat or even on foot, as well as the experiences tied up in the luxury and authentic family-friendly accommodation; including private riverside eco lodges , tented camps, and stellar villas with kids clubs and special activities.

- Family Safari in Botswana
Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris
By Antoinette Booyse
Safari Travel Planner
Experience one of our Botswana family safaris to create lifelong memories. The variety of Botswana’s wildlife is incredible, from the elephant and zebra herds of Chobe National Park to the thriving Okavango Delta and the big cats of the Kalahari. And it’s not just the wildlife that makes Botswana perfect for family safaris .
There are family-friendly Botswana lodges and private guides for personalized safaris. Botswana has plenty of age-appropriate kids activities, with kids menus and babysitters.
Highlights on a Family Safari in Botswana
In the Kalahari and Makgadikgadi Pans, children will benefit from the demonstrative Bushman walks, which focus on animal tracking, spoor identification, insects, fire-making, traditional uses of plants, and making arrowheads out of stones.
Chobe River is ideal for Botswana family safaris because boat cruises are a safe and comfortable way to get close to animals like elephants, hippos, and crocodiles.
For a family with older children, game drives in Moremi and Chobe can be exciting due to the plentiful animal encounters that are sure to be unforgettable.
Travel Tips on a Family Safari in Botswana
It is best to travel to Botswana as a family when the children are a bit older so that they can get the most out of the experience. Children must be older than eight to go on a game drive, while walking safaris require children to be at least 12 years old.
Wildlife is abundant in Botswana, but terrain can be challenging, and sometimes you might endure a long, bumpy ride to get the results, which children might not tolerate well.
Families traveling from abroad should seek out lodges that cater specifically to children, feature family-sized tents, special babysitting services, and kid-friendly bush walks and activities.

Botswana family safari planning with the experts
Famous for offering some of the most luxurious and exclusive (and correspondingly expensive) safari camps in all of Africa, Botswana’s high level of thoughtful service lends itself beautifully to a family safari for the right sort of adventurous family. Botswana is certainly not the first country to jump to mind when considering a family safari, but for some it will be the family holiday of a lifetime.
Botswana Family Safari itinerary planning
Where to go with young children on your Botswana Family Safari?
The most family friendly safari lodges in botswana.
Hands down the best lodge in the Okavango Delta for children is Seba Camp . With a huge concentration on centring activities around children, you would almost expect Seba Camp's tag line to be 'the children are the future'. It's not, of course. But a family holiday here would prove an immersive experience for adults and children alike. For the Selinda Spillway it’s absolutely Selinda Explorer’s Camp . Children are given a Young Explorer’s Pack on arrival which marks the start of their ‘training’ and over the course of their stay will work towards their Conservation Ambassador Badge. An extra touch that puts this top of the list is that your child will receive a letter from a local child inviting them to be a lifelong pen pal. Chobe is not our favourite wildlife area as we find it relatively crowded, but having said that Muchenje is one of the best family safari lodges in Botswana. Opt for the two-storey family chalet, giving you more than enough space to eradicate the usual family bickering from your holiday – teenagers especially like this! Leroo La Tau is our pick in the Makgadikgadi Pans. This camp has a spacious family room and is really spread out, so ideal for relaxation in between activities. Kids will love exploring with the San Bushmen, boating around the area and seeing the impressive Zebra migration - a sight fit to impress any age!
Botswana family safari activities
Activities on a botswana safari for older children, activities on a botswana safari for younger children, how to combine the beach with a botswana family safari.
Botswana is a landlocked country, so not as easily combinable with a beach break as other African countries like in East Africa. The closest destination would be Mozambique , famous for its spectacular white sandy beaches, which are probably some of the best in Africa. You have the Quirimbas and Bazaruto Archipelagos chains to choose from. However, they are not cheap! For a safari and beach combination we would implore you to consider an East Africa safari destination; it is much easier logistically and also cheaper to combine the two and Zanzibar (the go to East African island) is more appropriate for families than options in Mozambique. Further afield you can also combine Mauritius with a safari in Botswana, although you have to take into consideration extra travel time. Due to non-connecting flights, the downside of combining Botswana with the beach is the annoying overnight in Johannesburg. Alternatively, both Victoria Falls and Cape Town work perfectly well with a Botswana safari pre and post safari.
Why a Botswana Family Safari?
Time to stop rushing around with your heads in a screen. A safari is a chance to ditch the iPhone and PlayStation, and reconnect with nature and with each other. Botswana’s wilderness is one of the last true ones in the world, and we cannot think of many better places to spend really special quality time with your loved ones. Botswana is a great place for a wild education. With so little in the form of man-made entertainment, there are few distractions and the lodges will often have specially trained guides running children’s educational programmes. So with great luxury, comes great convenient service! Botswana is all about intimacy and personalised service. Children are just as attentively looked after as the parents; there are no half measures just because children are short! A Botswana family safari is not for everyone. However, there are very few family experiences that can compare for those whose children are mature and nature-savvy. On top of stunning lodges and first class hospitality, Botswana's wildlife is exceptional, from the marauding hippos, the wading elephants or the exceptional birdlife, it is one of the best places on the continent to view the big five, plus wild dog and cheetah. A boating, walking or vehicular safari never disappoints in Botswana.
How much does an Botswana family safari cost?
Safaris are not the most economical option for a family holiday; there is no question about it. Family tents are available across most camp, meaning you can all be under the same canvas - a relief to some..! It’s worth remembering that under 12’s are eligible for a reduction on their international air fares. On the ground in Botswana, prices start at around $950 per adult per night and about $600 per child per night. Although very expensive, if you have the budget then we really would recommend Botswana as the ultimate family holiday destination for older families looking for the best of the best. Introducing Odyssey Explorer Welcome to our new itinerary-building app! Odyssey Explorer allows you to browse a range of popular itinerary templates and tailor them to suit your budget and tastes. Once you are happy with your route template, Odyssey Explorer gives you the freedom to select and change your accommodation in each destination. It is an excellent tool for you to get an instant price for your dream trip before you work with a Tanzania expert to fine-tune it and make it into a reality.
When is the best time for Botswana family safari holiday?
When to go to Botswana is similar to the rest of Southern Africa, but for slightly unique reasons! Generally, Southern Africa is best in our summer months of July – September. This is when the parks are dry, the wildlife is most concentrated, and easier to spot as a result. However, there certainly are benefits for going outside peak season for several reasons. For families, although it could be tempting to look at the summer months, it can be a good idea to go to Botswana in the May half term as rates are significantly reduced and the wildlife and weather is still great. October is another option but is extremely hot. For a festive family holiday, the lodges are fully booked in Botswana over New Year and Christmas – it is rainy season, but rates are still high and Botswana’s wildlife always delivers whatever the season. Although the Okavango Delta handily follows the same weather pattern as the rest of Southern Africa, it is best between July-September for different reasons! The water from the Angolan highlands is what fills up the Delta’s waterways, not the rainfall! This water begins to trickle down in March time and continues to fill up the Delta’s “fan” shape up until September, when it begins to evaporate in the heat. Then it starts again the year after. Confusingly, when the Delta is fullest, this is when the wildlife is best. The water limits the animals' movements and concentrates them onto islands, making them easier to spot. Also, water based activities are best when the levels are high for obvious reasons. It is worth noting that camps which are further from the pan handle will only have water activities available when the Delta is in peak flood from July – September.
Botswana Family Safaris - Africa Odyssey Tips
Book a safari camp with inter-connecting rooms or a family tent so you can all stay close together. If you are a large, multigenerational family then looking to book a smaller camp for exclusive use is certainly worth considering. Being able to tailor make your days to how you want them is a real bonus and gives your trip that extra special feeling. Going just outside of the main June to September season will still give you great game viewing, but at a fraction of the cost. Avoiding the national parks and being in one of the private concessions will give you a really raw, intimate and quiet safari experience and you can be certain that your family's every needs will be attended to. Keep your safari varied. Children will become bored after their 10th vehicle game drive. Choose a mixture of camps that offer a different experience. A trip to Cape Town and/or Victoria Falls is always a good bookend for your safari. Cape Town has so much to keep all the family entertained and Victoria Falls is something no-one will ever forget once they see it.

It exceeded all of our expectations and was a fantastic family experience that we will remember forever! I actually logged into your site this weekend as I was planning on writing a review on your company but then got distracted. I have full intention of writing a review for you, as well as the places we stayed – which were all great. * * * * * - L Roepke
Our trip was amazing, exceeded my expectations in every possible way and l am still in awe at seeing the wildlife in its natural environment, our Botswana safari was truly magical and to be able to spend it with my family made it even more special! * * * * * - R Connarty
We had a really marvellous time and the kids loved every minute of it. This was the first Safari I had been on with my entire family, which encompasses 10, 13, 19 and 23 year-olds. I have never seen them all looking happy for so long, although it was a shame that the youngest could not go on the walking Safari. * * * * * - Barton Family
Overall the trip was a stunning success. It was wonderful to be able to share things like that with my sons. A lifetime of memories for them. * * * * * - K Ryalls
This was one of the best trips I’ve done with my family in many years. As very experienced travelers and climbers I liked that George from Africa Odyssey worked with me upfront to customize our trip to our needs and interests and we went through many iterations until we got it right. He really listened to us and I know that made a huge difference in the quality of our trip. * * * * * - M Richey

8 Days Safari tour itinerary for Makgadikgadi Pan, Maun & Nxai Pan National Park: Unite With The Wild Side Of Botswana
We had a wonderful time! Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba were excellent as drivers, guides, cooks, and problem solvers. We ate very well indeed. I will comment that the tour we took was quite different from the stated description of it. For example, we did not go to the salt pan. It seems that Rocky, the boss of the crew, received a different itinerary than what we thought we would be doing. How did that happen? The places we did go were terrific, and it was not until the second last day of the trip, that we realised the discrepancy. Rocky offered us a way to go to the salt pan, but for a couple of reasons, we declined that offer. Please note that I am not complaining about Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba. They followed the information they had received. I will also say that while we were accepting of the situation, some people could have reacted differently, and that would not have been fair to our crew. To summarise, we loved the trip! Credit to Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba for looking after us so well and sharing their beautiful country with us. Sincerely, Arthur George Busch

Fantastic holiday. The best I have ever had. Would have been, crazy, crazy good if I didn't find out about the activities, accomodation and inclusions when I came to book a room after a poor stay at my first guesthouse (when ariving in Kasane). The TRS Lodge missed out on another night's custom from that lack of information to me. But hey , all a part of the adventure. Can't recommend the trip over all too highly. One thing, if a client wants to catch tigerfish (the premier sports fish in the Zambezi River) tell them to bring their own fishing rod for trophy purposes and good memories. Come in the Summer months and dont have insect repellant on their palms on the day (pm is best) The fish will smell it on the lures and bait. Hope to come back at that time and damn the mosquitos. Not one sighted, even at night as the locals advised. Cheers, Simon Buchhorn.

Reviews of Botswana Family Tours
Kwalpe safari lodge was less central than the hotel mentioned on original booking - room was good, staff was great and included food was great. Did some tours privately which were a bit better than included ones.

Botswana Family Safari
Hand selected family-friendly safari itineraries in and around botswana for the ultimate adventure suitable for families of all ages.
With our portfolio of family safaris in Botswana, we have carefully selected destinations, safari camps, and lodges that offer an adventure experience of discovery that will be remembered for a lifetime.
Wildlife destinations include the Okavango, Chobe National Park, Chobe River, Makgadikgadi Pans, and the Kalahari Desert to mention a few.
Family-friendly safaris allow parents and children to bond and explore the natural world together, on game drives, on nature walks, around the table while enjoying a meal or simply relaxing as a unit around a swimming pool. All itineraries are safe, fun, and rewarding, offering up an unforgettable educational experience while also providing an exciting adventure.
Travelling with young children in Africa can be a bit daunting, but it can be an immensely rewarding experience with proper planning and research. Here are a few tips to help you plan the perfect family safari in Africa:
- Choose an adventure experience that offers age-appropriate wildlife activities for one's children.
- Choose a lodge or camp that offers suitable Botswana family-friendly lodges ; do you require interleading suites, or are you happy with the kids sleeping in the same room as you, the parents.
- Are there babysitting options, and is there a games room of sorts.
- The general safety in camp, in other words, does wildlife wander through camp (fenced or unfenced).
- Research the local culture and customs before your trip. This will help you and your family understand and respect the local people and their traditions.
- Is malaria present, and does this concern you as a family.
- Game drives usually are 3-4 hours long. Can your children sit for this time frame and not get bored? If not, then a private game drive vehicle needs consideration.
The best time to take a Botswana safari is between June and October during the dry winter season. This is the peak tourism season, and the weather is usually warm and sunny, making it perfect for game viewing. The landscapes are also very photogenic during this time of year.
Just a quick note, there is a difference between what is child friendly versus one that is child tolerant. Only a few companies offer authentic child friendly and family friendly itineraries.
Our africa travel experts will guide you to the best choice of family safaris that are best suited to you on a bespoke itinerary based on what you and your family are looking to get out of your holiday in the country.

About Botswana
Botswana is one of Africa’s greatest conservation success stories, with a tiny human population and huge tracts of pristine land set aside for wildlife.
With numbers strictly regulated, visitors are able to get away from crowds and enjoy one of the highest ratios of wildlife to people anywhere.
Botswana’s combination of great game, uncrowded reserves, excellent small camps and the use of open vehicles for day and night game viewing is difficult to beat.
The most productive wildlife areas are all in the far north of the country – and because each region has a distinct character, a well-rounded wildlife safari should include a few days in these areas.
We recommend the concession areas of Linyati, Selinda & Kwando, situated north east of the Okavango Delta and home to many elephant, buffalo, lion, wild dog, lechwe, sitatunga, hippo and giraffe.
The Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world and is dominated by the Moremi Game Reserve. Surrounded by an extensive network of private concessions that offer exclusive game-viewing safaris, the wildlife here rarely disappoints. The centre of the delta is a labyrinth maze of reed-lined channels best explored by mokoro, a traditional dug-out canoe. Cruising between islands sitting inches above the waterline allows you to feel part of the environment.
Meanwhile, Chobe National Park is famous for its massive herds of huge elephants, prides of lion and many buffalo. Chobe has arguably become overpopular due to its accessibility (particularly from the relatively nearby Victoria Falls) and is the one place in Botswana that you could easily run into crowds and large impersonal lodges. That said, there are still some gems such as Savuti, perhaps the region’s best-kept secret.
For a more ethereal experience, the Makgadikgadi Pans are large prehistoric lakes almost entirely devoid of human habitation that cover an area the size of Portugal. The pans are now barren salt flats fringed with grasslands and isolated “islands” of palm trees and ancient baobabs. The wildlife here is both limited and ephemeral and it is more about wilderness than wildlife – although spending time with a family of habituated meerkats is definitely a top wildlife-viewing experience.
Even more off grid, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is reached by a tiny number of visitors every year and offers the ultimate remote safari. Black-maned lions, plentiful cheetah and good populations of dry-land specials such as meerkats, brown hyena, caracal and oryx are among the many highlights.

Top reasons to visit Botswana
Often the best safaris involve looking beyond the obvious highlights. It’s about the myriad exhilarating encounters that will make your heart sing. These are encounters that nobody could ever predict, but that make your safari genuinely unique.
Best time To Visit Botswana
Wildlife viewing peaks between june and october.
While Botswana is an excellent all-year round destination, the high season focuses on when wildlife viewing is at its most abundant.
June to October is peak season for wildlife-viewing in many areas with game-concentrations rising as the out-lying water dwindles. Be aware that in June and July night-time temperatures, particularly in the desert, can dip to nearly freezing – the days are generally cool, clear and very pleasant.
September and October see the mercury rise in both daytime and night, with daytime temperatures peaking at around 40˚C in mid to late October, although mercifully always remaining dry, and not humid, heat which makes a huge difference.
Understand the seasons and take advantage of low rates
You can expect few guests and the same amazing standards of guiding and accommodation – all with low season rates – between January and March.
Most of the rain in Botswana falls between December and March. While this means wildlife can be harder to spot within the denser vegetation, you’ll still see plenty of animals and have the opportunity to catch a rare glimpse of newborn calfs and a plethora of migratory birds. Arrive a little later in April or May and you’ll enjoy clear skies with cool days and nights.
The annual “flood” usually arrives in the Okavango in April or May and much of what was savannah will be submerged, creating stunning waterways that are superb to explore by Mokoro, and forcing wildlife to concentrate on fewer and smaller islands. Similarly, in the Linyanti Swamps, Selinda Spillway and Savuti Marsh, the timing and amount of rain will have a profound effect on the local wildlife, determining the sizes of herds of elephant, buffalo and number of predators around.

Our Favourite Camps & Lodges
This camp is the laidback sister of Jack’s and San Camp with understated brilliance in the heart of the great Kalahari.
San Camp is not for everyone but those that go with an open mind and can appreciate that there is more to Africa than elephants and lions.
The camp commands stunning views over the plains and the open fronted dining room gives a very pleasant feeling of being a part of the landscape.
One of the only camps to be able to offer permanent water-based activities plus game and night drives and guided walks.
The camp has been carefully designed and laid out and the overall impression is one of style, quality and indulgence.
This is a superb camp for small family groups and can be reserved for exclusive use with a minimum of eight paying guests.
Botswana (FAQs) Need to Know
What is the accommodation like in botswana.
Botswana long ago headed down a path of low tourist numbers and top-quality camps. The level of comfort and stratospheric opulence at a few of these places can be startling, as is the price tag, however they’re also located in some of the most game-rich areas you can find anywhere with wildlife-documentary quality interaction. The level of exclusivity in terms of not seeing other vehicles is truly remarkable.
At the other end of the scale, adventure is alive and well on an expeditionary mobile safari and one of the beauties of Botswana is that it is possible to combine both experiences on the same safari. No amount of rose petals or personal butlers will make up for the smells and sounds you’ll experience with a few nights under canvas in the African wild. In Botswana we use either light or luxury mobile camps where the focus is on intelligent simplicity; great wildlife viewing, experienced guides and access to remote areas usually off the safari trail.
Is Botswana a good family safari destination?
Botswana is a great place to consider for your family. For young people, a safari in Botswana may be the most exhilarating experience. The adventure of travelling in light aircraft low over the waters of the Delta and plains of the Kalahari is unparalleled. Furthermore, waking up early to explore the wilderness in an open vehicle or out in a dug-out canoe is not something they are likely to forget.
Some of the camps and lodges work closely with San Bushmen trackers who have a particular affinity for kids and will be delighted to spend time showing them the tricks of the bush. The great thing about Botswana is the variety of activities on offer so it is unlikely that boredom will have a chance to set in.
However, this does need to be qualified. Many camps and lodges don’t allow children below the ages of 8 or 12, some won’t let under 16’s out on walks. You should also note that some camps don’t offer concessionary rates to children and even, in some instances, may require you to take exclusive use of a vehicle or part of a camp at an extra fee. That said, there are camps that are genuinely family-friendly and tailor accommodation, meals and activities to meet the needs of their young guests.
What is a mokoro safari in Botswana?
A mokoro is a traditional dug out wooden canoe that is used by locals to navigate the waterways of the Okavango Delta. It’s one of the few places where you can indulge in a safari experience from a couple of feet above the clear water. In some camps, it is in fact the only way you can explore, while others offer mokoro trips as the seasonal changes in water levels allow. As a completely different experience to your dusty game drive, it should be top of the to-do list when visiting the Okavango.
Travelling by mokoro through the Okavango Delta is slow by nature, and you can’t dash over to see an animal spotted in the distance. However, you’ll find that a surprising number of birds and animals congregate around the islands, lagoons and reed beds of the Delta. You just have to quietly glide by and keep your eyes peeled.

Epic and unique Botswana family adventures
Famous for its diverse landscapes, lush wildlife and energetic experiences across the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari Desert, Botswana is the perfect destination for a luxury family safari holiday.
Experts in planning tailored experiences for families travelling to Botswana, Jacada’s Travel Designers consider everything from luxury accommodation to transport, and provide a detailed itinerary including family-friendly activities with local guides.
In a truly versatile Botswana family safari, your family can explore the landscapes and encounter the local wildlife by air, boat or even on foot, as well as experiencing luxury and authentic family-friendly accommodation; including private riverside villas, tented camps, and stellar lodges with kids clubs and special activities.
Although Botswana has become an exclusive and popular family-friendly destination in recent years, it may be more suited to older families, as the choices for young families here are quite limited given the remote locations, age restrictions at the accommodation, and the level of travelling involved with many of its destinations. Nevertheless, we have a great portfolio of options for families travelling with younger children, so speak to our expert Travel Designer for more information.

I love Botswana as a family safari destination - it works so well for older families and young adventurers too. Boat trips on the Delta's waterways, spying crocs in the water or watching massive herds of elephants crossing your path is captivating for everyone. The wildlife in Botswana is staggering, everyday there's countless 'wow' experiences - really special for families to share all this together.

Where to go
Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is an absolute haven for wildlife and one of the world's premier safari destinations. Waterways and islands are the setting for jeep safaris, speed boats and more.
The Linyanti’s diverse ecosystems of lagoons, rivers, grasslands and wooded areas make it a magnet for wildlife such as big cats, plains game, masses of birdlife and some of the biggest elephant herds in the world.
Chobe and Savuti
Like its neighbour The Linyanti, Chobe is famous for its staggering elephant population. Beautiful boat trips give a privileged view of these impressive creatures as they congregate in the shallows of the Chobe river.
Moremi is known as one of the prettiest game reserves in Africa with its mix of land and delta environments. The variation and amount of wildlife species is enormous here including the big five, wild dogs and over 500 types of birds.
The Makgadikgadi Pans
Adventurous families, keen to get off the beaten path, are lured to Makgadikgadi. Otherworldly landscapes explored on quad bikes, stargazing and learning about the fascinating history and culture of this remote corner of Botswana.
Central Kalahari Game Reserve
The vast arid deserts of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve give way to Deception Valley where fossilised river systems attract large herds of herbivores and large predators. Also a fantastic place to learn about the ancient culture of the San people.
Mobile Safari Expeditions
The epitome of exclusivity and privacy; a safari adventure that’s completely tailored to your family. The ultimate safari experience on a private expedition across the wildlife rich landscapes of Botswana.
Known as the predator capital of Africa, bursting with big cats and one of Botswana’s key conservation areas. It’s an area with extremely stylish, sustainable camps, taking care of your families every need while on safari.
Meet your Africa team
Travel Designer
When to visit
June through to October are the best game viewing months as the climate is very dry and the water begins to recede, making the animals congregate in smaller areas. However, the temperature during October can be very hot.
Bird Watching
November - April
Delta Flood
June - September
July - August

Jacada is beyond incredible and we look forward to planning future adventures with them. Our experience was flawless from beginning to end. Iain listened to our dream trip ideas and came up with a bucket list itinerary to Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. James took over and guided us with his amazing care til departure. Such peace during our travels…
Safaris, safaris, safaris..All the guides, campsite staff , hotel workers at the One and Only, restaurants in Capetown incredible! Everyone so nice. Tor at Jacada planned the perfect trip and Angela was extremely helpful with making sure we had everything together for the trip. Would return to Botswana and Zimbabwe tomorrow if could afford it. A photographer's dream.
Every detail was arranged and executed deftly. Not a single unpleasant surprise, but only delightful turns at every adventure. We were in four different camps in Namibia and Botswana and each proved unique in setting and game viewing. I didn't want this trip to ever end.

Itinerary idea in detail
Includes international flights from a choice of UK airports, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Maun.
On arrival in Maun, you will be met by your light aircraft pilot, who will fly you over the Delta into the heart of the Moremi Wildlife Reserve. There, you'll stay in a two-bedroom family unit at Camp Okuti. This camp is well-equipped for children of all ages, complete with a swimming pool.
Morning and afternoon activities in this wildlife hot spot. You can enjoy morning or afternoon safaris and boat cruises from Okuti, and there is a very interesting heronry located close to the lodge. The guides are well-trained to engage children during their safari and will provide a bag of inspiring goodies to keep their interest.
Today, you'll take a light aircraft from the national park into the Shinde Private Concession. Your guide will meet you and take you to Shinde Footsteps, where you will stay for the next three nights. This is a safari camp as it used to be — rustic yet comfortable, with no detail overlooked.
The Young Explorers programme is great for families who are a little more adventurous and want to experience more of the real side of camping in the bush. The camp is a little rustic but far from being basic. It is an outstanding experience. The camp mainly concentrates on walking, as the name suggests, but mokoro trips are also possible, and game drives are available if you wish. This is a fantastic experience, and you will learn so much along the way from the expert guides.
A second full day at Footsteps. The guides are fabulous at engaging the whole family and teaching young safari goers how to track wildlife, recognise spoor, identify birds, whittle a spear and build small animal traps as the bushmen do.
Another light aircraft will take you out of the Delta and across to the dry desert of the Central Kalahari. Two nights here introduces you to the life of the San People and offers totally different scenery to where you've already been.
Activities from Dinaka focus on exploring the arid landscape in search of the rare brown hyena, Kalahari lion, oryx and bat-eared fox — all animals you don't find in the Okavango Delta. If you're feeling adventurous, it is also possible to spend the night sleeping out on the pans under the stars
You can enjoy one final early morning activity before bidding farewell to your guides and flying back to Maun to connect with your onward travel arrangements.
Arrive home today to complete your journey.

Botswana Safari Holidays
Africa's most dazzling and diverse safari destination
Botswana safari holidays
From endless desert to lush delta, Big Five game drives to intimate meerkat encounters, Botswana safari holidays are an exercise in balancing Africa’s most magnificent contradictions.
One of the most diverse destinations in the world for both landscapes and wildlife, Botswana can almost be imagined as two worlds.
To the south lies the Kalahari and its endless, arid savannah; to the northwest, the Okavango Delta, where a root system of waterways floods and recedes like a heartbeat from the Okavango River, creating an ever-changing, glittering oasis.
This country of contrasts has something to appeal to every safari-goer, whether you are booking your Botswana safari holiday as a couple, a family, or a solo traveller. Let us find the hidden gems you are looking for in the treasure trove that is Botswana.

Where to go on your Botswana safari holiday?
The starting point for any Botswana safari is usually the Okavango Delta. This seasonal and ever-changing ecosystem boasts some of the most impressive wildlife experiences in Africa.
From experiencing the waterways by paddling in a dugout mokoro canoe, to watching wild dog battle with leopard, the Delta is home to some of our favourite safari memories.
The Magkadikgadi Pans, however, are in direct contrast; this salt-white lunar landscape to the north of the Kalahari Desert feels somehow elemental. It is a vast and ancient space where wildlife may be less prolific but is also more unusual.
Finally, the Chobe National Park must always spring to mind when thinking of a Botswana safari. It hosts more giants than people, so expect to find yourself in the gentle shadow of a hundred-strong herd of elephants. Only a short drive away from Victoria Falls, Chobe is also one of the more accessible additions to a longer African bucket list.
What to see on a Botswana safari holiday?
If your family has an excessively long list of wild animals they would like to see, then a Botswana safari holiday is an unbeatable choice for your next adventure.
Botswana’s diverse landscapes make ideal habitats for every furred, feathered, scaled and tailed creature, starting with the Big Five .
Some of the parks even hand out irresistible illustrated wildlife, reptile, and birdlife ‘checklists’. With more than 570 species of birds found in Botswana, this is a handy distraction tool for little ones.
The herbivores come to each water source in droves; everything from elephants, buffalos, impalas, pukus, zebras, and giraffes. As for predators, lion, cheetah, and leopard are just the start.
Botswana also has one of the few remaining large populations of the endangered African wild dog, and you may even spot a rare brown hyena, a black-maned lion, or the elusive honey badger in drier areas.
Our favourite Botswana experiences
The wonder of Botswana is that there is something for everyone.
Paddling through the waterways of the Okavango Delta may be one of our favourite activities, but perhaps your family would prefer quad biking in the salt pans.
Horse-riding safaris are especially popular as a way to feel truly immersed in the landscape and wildlife, but for those who would prefer a little distance, it is hard to beat wildlife viewing from a hot air balloon.
Where to stay in Botswana?
Botswana is renowned for its exclusive camps and lodges, which are often found hidden within their own private game concessions.
This privacy translates into exclusive safari experiences such as night drives, walking safaris, horseback safaris, and hot-air balloon safaris.
However, lodges and camps can also be found in the main National Parks, and wildlife viewing from this range of mobile camps and larger luxury lodges is consistently brilliant. Whether you’re hoping for a private plunge pool or a chance to camp out under the stars, Botswana has you covered.
Is Botswana family-friendly?
Botswana is the safari holiday that every parent dreams of, a place where the wild and the comfortable have reached a brilliant equilibrium.
Many lodges and camps now specialise in family safaris, with highly trained guides, family tents and exclusive villas, and private safari vehicles available to ensure maximum flexibility.
Activities such as fishing, animal tracking, and cooking can be added to a safari already rich with diversity.
Botswana may be known for its exceptional wildlife encounters, but for parents looking for their next safari experience, the safety, friendly people, cultural diversity, and dedication to conservation are likely to be as much of a draw.

7 Day Botswana Family Safari Explore the Kalahari and Okavango Delta
Botswana Family Safari Experience
Experiences in this Botswana family safari will bring the whole family together, but will also allow for your kids to be active while you as parents have moments to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the African bush.
Gliding along the Okavango floodplains and channels in a mokoro canoe. Tracking Botswana's wildlife on foot under the guidance of local guides. Witnessing the meandering Okavango Delta ways from the sky. Cultural interactions with local San Bushmen. These are all memorable experiences that your children will remember for a lifetime.
Day 1: Travel from Maun to the Kalahari
Your Botswana family safari adventure starts off as you and your family arrive in Maun; where you will board a light aircraft that will fly you over the Kalahari desert to your child friendly accommodation in the Central Kalahari. A stunning location overlooking a waterhole combined with spacious accommodation and interactive activities with local Bushmen, makes this the perfect first stop on your Botswana family safari. End your first day with a marshmallow “braai” around a bush fire followed by bedtime stories as your kids fall asleep to the roar of the lion, reminding them of the African wilderness and the story of The Lion King.
Day 2 - 3: Explore the Kalahari with local San Bushmen
The next 2 days are spent discovering the Kalahari on game drives and cultural interactions with the local San Bushmen. Young and old will enjoy being active on bush walks where you are shown how make a bow and arrow, gather food and even learn how to make a fire with two sticks. The Central Kalahari sand makes it easy to track lions, leopards, wildebeest and other wildlife during day and night game drives. Game drives in the Central Kalahari are for the older kids but a swimming pool and several indoor and outdoor areas are perfect for the young ones to play between activities. Even though your Botswana family safari is set in the remote Central Kalahari, wi-fi is available by satellite so that your teenager children need not be cut off completely. As you fall asleep under the African sky you will have felt that your family needs have been catered to and you look forward to tomorrows adventures that will take you into the Okavango Delta.
Day 4: Fly to Okavango Delta
After breakfast, another exciting light aircraft flight awaits to take you to your family-friendly bush camp in the Okavango Delta. Your children will be amazed by the intricate patterns of the Delta wetland wonder as you fly over the Okavango Delta waterways. Your home for the next 3 nights is set in the forest of a large palm-studded island bordering the wildlife-rich Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta. Many species of wildlife call the Okavango their home including lions, leopards, buffalos, elephants, hippopotamuses, giraffes, antelopes and many smaller mammals. The waterways and forests are also brimming with over 450 different bird species. The peace and tranquility of the Delta will ensure that you have a peaceful nights sleep.
Day 5 - 6: Navigate the Okavango Delta waterways
Your teenagers will have to put their electronic devices away as this camp is truly remote and there is no wi-fi signal. It will not be a problem as there are so many activities for you to enjoy together as a family. Your own private guide will ensure you can enjoy customised activities to suite the capabilities and needs of the entire family. Take a picnic lunch and spend the day discovering the nearby islands, lily-studded lagoons and sweeping waterways of the Delta. The Okavango experience includes hand-made wooden dug-out mokoro canoe trips, private guided walking trips and cultural interactions.
Day 7: Return to Maun and onwards
After breakfast and one final morning safari, it is time to bid the Botswana wilderness goodbye. Return to Maun for your onward journey. This Botswana family safari can easily be combined with other destinations in Southern Africa. Maybe a few days in Cape Town or Victoria Falls? Anything is possible. We have several family holiday packages that complement this Botswana safari and our Destination Consultants can easily tailor your family holiday to Africa to reflect your individual needs and budget.
