Here are a few regional cruises that you can hop on with your pup in tow:

Dog Gone Sailing Charters, Provincetown, MA

This cruise gives passengers a chance to tour the Cape with Captain Rosemary Rudloff on her 30’ sail boat, Moondance II. Up to six passengers and an unlimited amount of their four-legged mates can board the vessel at the MacMillan Pier for a tour of the sea.

Cruise options include a sunrise sail, which can be a half or full day, and a sunset sail. There is also a 1.5-hour shrimp sail. Dogs are allowed on all areas of the boat, as the ship’s leader is a massive animal lover herself.

“My Maltese mini mate is captain of the dogs and barks them in place and then she and they are pals for life,” says Captain Rudloff. “If one doesn’t have a dog mini mate, she will sit in their lap the entire time.”

For many dog owners, organising dog friendly vacations can be an absolute nightmare and poses many questions… Can you bring the dog with you? Will the beaches be dog friendly? Can your dog stay in your hotel? Can your dog fly with you? If you don’t take your dog, who will look after them?

The beauty of Click&Boat and the sharing economy in general is that it is possible to find the perfect solution for each and every need. We have different types of boats owned by different private and professional owners all over the world and many of these will accomodate different types of trips. With many boat owner being dog owners themselves, you will surely find a boat that allows pets on board for your sailing adventure.

We reached out to the RSPCA to get their thoughts on boating holidays with dogs and they gave us some incredible insight into how to be a responsible dog owner and how to make sure your dog is completely safe and comfortable during your dog friendly vacation on board. 

Plan ahead!

RSPCA dog welfare expert Dr Samantha Gaines said: “There are lots of things to consider before deciding to take your dog on holiday with you. You need to ensure your dog is fit and healthy, and will be happy in new surroundings. It’s also important to plan ahead when thinking about whether your destination is dog-friendly, what doggy supplies you need to take with you, and how to help your pet enjoy the trip as much as you.” 

“Lots of dogs love the water and would really enjoy a getaway with their favorite humans on board a boat. Other dogs may be terrified of water so a weekend on a houseboat or a trip out to sea on a yacht may not be the best dog friendly vacation for them. Remember to take your dog’s individual personality into consideration when you’re planning your break. 

Has your dog ever been on a boat?

“Has your dog ever seen a boat before, let alone been on one? You may need to gradually and positively introduce them to a boat before taking them onboard for a week-long trip at sea. Similarly, it may take your dog some time to adjust to the feeling of being on water and you need to factor in whether this motion could make them feel sick.”

Pet hazards while boating…

“There are lots of hazards on boats, such as moving parts and sharp pieces of equipment, and water can also be potentially dangerous to dogs. We’d recommend getting your pet a life-jacket and keeping them on a lead or secure in a large, well-ventilated crate while on deck to ensure there’s no risk of them injuring themselves or falling into the water; while most dogs are strong swimmers, currents can easily sweep them away.” 

Safety first!

So its very clear: the safety of your dog comes before anything and you need to consider whether you can really keep your dog safe whilst on board the boat. If your dog is not used to water then you should definitely introduce it to large bodies of water first. Walks around large lakes or along the beach could be a good starting point.

Once you are absolutely sure your dog is not afraid of the water and is a confident swimmer, then you can introduce your pooch to the boat life. As mentioned by Dr. Gaines it is a wise idea to allow your dog onto a boat for smaller periods of time before taking them out on to the water for a week.

Setting sail with your dog

So you have decided you would like to set sail with your dog- all that’s left to do is to find the boat of your dreams! What to consider before taking your pooch on your vacation:

• Speak to your vet before deciding to take your dog on an action-packed getaway. Ask if your pet is suitably fit and healthy to travel, consider their age and their general health and fitness when planning your itinerary. Ensure they’re up-to-date with vaccinations, treatments and, if on any medication, that you have enough supplies for your trip.
• What is the weather forecast likely to be? Remember dogs can struggle in the heat so if you’re planning a summer vacation you’ll need to remember to keep them cool and safe.
• What do your holiday plans involve? Will your dog be comfortable in a new setting, meeting new people and visiting new places? Some dogs may find it worrying or stressful so, for them, it may be best to leave them at home with someone responsible who’ll take care of them.
• Plan ahead; is your accommodation dog-friendly and what facilities do they have? Do the attractions you hope to visit welcome dogs? If you’re planning to travel abroad you’ll need to secure the relevant paperwork in advance. 
• What do you need to take with you? Remember a collar with ID tag, lead, cosy bed, toys and chews, poo bags, food, treats, towel for muddy paws, and a camera to take lots of snaps!
• Transporting your pet; be sure your dog is comfortable travelling in the car and can be safely secured either in a crate or with a car harness. Take regular toilet breaks and remember, never leave your dog unattended in a car on a warm day. 
• During your dog friendly vacation its important to settle in. Give your dog time to settle into a new environment and don’t leave them alone if this will cause them distress. If they seem unsettled you could use a familiar-smelling item to help them settle in. Vacations can be busy so remember to give them time to rest!
• Remember they’re in new surroundings so if they don’t have the best recall you may want to keep them on the lead to ensure they’re not going to stray onto a road or near a cliff.
• Have fun! Taking your four-legged friend on vacation is a great way to make memories, create a strong bond and enjoy spending quality time with your dog so enjoy it!

Boating with Dogs: 6 Tips for Taking Your Dog on a Boat

There’s nothing more fun than bringing your four-legged friends along with you on a boat trip . Most dogs love the water almost as much as they love being with their people. Before you head out onto the lake, river or bay, there’s a few things you can do to ensure your pet has a best experience possible while out on the water. Here is six tips for taking your dog on a boat :

1. Invest in a dog life jacket

If your dog isn’t a natural swimmer, and even if he is, a life jacket will provide peace of mind for everybody. Canine life jackets are made of high-floatation neoprene or nylon, and they feature reflective trim, rescue handles and leash rings. 2. Let your dog to get familiar with the boat before leaving the dock

3. Bring a first-aid kit for you & your furry first mate

Keep a first aid kit onboard just in case your dog steps on a sharp shell or decides to take on a marine animal. In addition to the basic supplies like gauze pads, antiseptic wipes, adhesive tape, scissors and tweezers, consider items such as hydrogen peroxide, extra towels, ear cleaning solution, styptic powder, a flashlight and needle-nose pliers.

4. Bring plenty of water for drinking

Even if you’re boating on a fresh water lake , it’s never a good idea to let your pet drink from the lake.

Yes, even pets need sun protection. Dogs with short hair or light skin, such as white boxers, are especially susceptible to sunburn. Sunscreen with SPF-15 is a good choice for most dogs. 6. Plan for potty time

Be sure to take lots of pet waste bags along with you on your boating adventures . Paper towels and odor neutralizer are also good items to have on board. Take along some odor neutralizing trash bags, the kind you use in your kitchen trash can, to dispose of everything until you’re near a proper trash receptacle

Before you leave the dock and set off on your doggy boat trip, you need to ensure your hound is used to its new nautical surroundings. If it’s your dog’s first time on a boat, it’s especially important to let them explore and have a sniff around. Whilst on the lead, walk them all over the boat so they get familiar with the environment. It’s always a good idea to take them out on a short test trip first to introduce them to boating and see how they behave. Don’t be put off if your pup is a little nervous at first – it might take some time for them to acclimatise, but with a slow and gentle approach, your dog may become a boat lover over time!

Pack essential supplies

To ensure your furry friend has the best possible time on your boat trip, you’ll need to bring a few things with you, including: 

• A lead – always bring a lead with you when you’re on a boat. If you need to control your pup, have an unplanned stop or even encounter fellow boaters with dogs, your dog will be better off on a lead.
• Fresh water – it’s important to keep your hound hydrated throughout your trip. Bring plenty of fresh water with you for them to sip, especially if it’s a hot day.
• Sunscreen – believe it or not, dogs can get sunburnt, too! Get your paws on a dog-friendly sunscreen or balm to help protect your dog’s nose. Lightly apply it to areas where the fur is thin, like the belly, around the armpits, or on the nose and ears.
• Toys – if you’re planning on going on a long trip, you may want to bring your dog’s favourite toy to keep them occupied whilst up on deck. Things like kong balls, rope toys or bones are good. You might want to take your pup’s blanket too, just to help them feel a little more at ease on the water.
• A first aid kit – to be extra safe, you should take things like bandages, insect repellent, antibacterial ointment, any medication/medical documents your dog needs, emergency phone numbers, and the Pawsquad App !

Put them in a doggy life jacket

Even if your hound is a strong swimmer, it’s still important for them to wear a life jacket on your trip. When it comes to getting a doggy life jacket, you’ll need to make sure you get the right one for your pooch. No one size fits all, as there are various different sizes and buoyancy. It’s advised to get one that is brightly coloured, so you can easily spot your dog, and with handles, so you can lift your paddling pup out of the water.

To ensure it’s the perfect fit for your dog, try it on at home first. This will also help them get used to wearing one. You may even want to take them out for a walk or a quick run around in the garden to help them acclimatise to the life jacket. Give your dog access to shade & water

If you’re cruising down the river on a hot summer’s day, it’s essential to make sure your dog has a shady spot where they can relax and escape the sun. Without shade, your hound could overheat and potentially get heatstroke. Whilst it’s perfectly okay to let your canine companion put their paws up and sunbathe for a while, they shouldn’t be kept in the sun all day. Make space for them below deck, under an awning, or even beneath a console or seat – anywhere that’s shaded from the sun. 

You should also give your dog a bowl of fresh water to drink whilst you’re on board. This will not only help to cool them down, but it will also prevent them from getting dehydrated. Bring plenty with you for top-ups, and never let your dog drink from the water surrounding the boat as it could potentially make your dog sick.

Plan for comfort breaks 

If you’re out riding the waves all day, you’ll of course need to factor in toilet breaks for your pup. Whilst you could use puppy pads to let your dog do their business, most dogs won’t feel comfortable doing so until they’re on land. That said, you’ll need to think about your route and plot appropriate places to stop off for a toilet break. You’ll know how often your dog goes, so plan for a few pit stops when mapping out your trip.

Calling everyone who can't bear the thought of not being with your dog for more than 24 hours... here's the perfect guide to exploring the world with your furry companion.

It was mid-2008 when Amy Burkert and her husband Rod found themselves adopting a stray German shepherd . The puppy was found near their home in Philadelphia, and after a few weeks of looking for his family to no avail, they decided to adopt him as their own and name him Buster. The issue? The couple, who at the time had a small dog named Ty, was planning a huge trip up to Canada about a month later and hadn't accounted for two dogs coming along.

Burkert searched online for dog-friendly hotels and dog parks along their route but didn't come up with much. The trip went well, but the experience taught her that other people probably were also looking for the same information.

In 2009, she launched GoPetFriendly.com , a comprehensive pet travel platform that quickly took off. Soon after, she and Rod, both who work remotely for their CPA firm, sold their place in Philly, hit the road in an RV, and haven't looked back since.

"In a few months, we will have been on the road for 11 years," Burkert says, adding that Ty and Buster have sadly passed, and they now have a new pup named Myles. "We love it, and by doing that with our dogs, we are walking the talk."

Since we're all attached to our dogs at the hip, here are some of Burkert's recommendations for how you can bring them along for a vacation.

How to Choose a Dog-Friendly Vacation Destination

Consider your itinerary.

There are many things to consider when traveling with your dog , from where you'll go to how you'll get there to fun activities to do along the way. While in the decision-making phase, Burkert recommends thinking about what you and your dog like to do together first.

"Do you like to go to the beach?" she asks. "What about hiking? Exploring cities? Or sitting at a coffee shop watching people walk by? It's important to think about how much your dog physically can and would want to do and what you'd want to do together."

And be prepared to make a few sacrifices for your four-legged companion. Dog-friendly vacation spots can come in various forms. Taking a road trip with your dog to New York City, for example, may not seem like a good spot because of the population density, but there are actually tons of great green spaces for your dog to play.

"That said, you might consider sacrificing your trip to the Guggenheim if you're with your dog," she says.

Think About Where You'll Stay

Your choice of accommodations is another important thing to keep in mind when planning your trip. While some locations have hotels that allow pets , other destinations with more natural surroundings might require flexible arrangements like renting a unique Airbnb or camping.

"A lot of people think that camping is a wonderful thing to do with a dog on vacation, but not if you're planning on leaving him or her in the camper all day," Burkert says. "That isn't much of a vacation for your pet. Instead, try to find a place that will work for you both."

As you decide the best vacation destination for your family (fur babies included), these Burkert-recommended places both domestic and international might just do the trick.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations on the East Coast

Eastern vermont.

Among the places on the East Coast to take your dog on vacation, a place called Dog Mountain in the Eastern Vermont town of St. Johnsbury ranks highly for Burkert.

"The people managing it have turned what was a dairy farm into an off-leash dog heaven," she says. "There is a pond, trails, even a dog chapel."

Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania

The town of Jim Thorpe , Pennsylvania, is home to the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway , which offers breathtaking trips through the Pocono Mountains. According to Burkert , the trip is a must for dog owners and is among the best dog-friendly vacation spots in the eastern U.S.

Bar Harbor, Maine

The 5,500-person town of Bar Harbor, Maine on Mount Desert Island is a great place to bring your pet companion, especially if you're interested in hiking at Acadia National Park . This island is the best of both worlds with mountains and sandy beaches within the park, and pet-friendly patios for eating in town. Doggie visitors are encouraged and there are tons of trails both you and your pup will enjoy.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations on the West Coast

Bend, oregon.

The 100,000-person town in central Oregon is so obsessed with dogs that they are allowed almost everywhere. Dog-friendly hiking trails are abundant at the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range, and within the city limits, you'll find many outdoor food carts , food truck parks, and breweries (including the award-winning Deschutes Brewery ), all of which welcome dogs.

San Diego, California

Sunny San Diego is among one of the best dog-friendly vacation spots thanks to its many open areas that accommodate them. If your pup likes to play on the beach, there are plenty of dog beaches and off-leash dog parks in and around this SoCal city. Check out Fiesta Island in Mission Bay, or Morley Field Dog Park in San Diego's famed Balboa Park .

If you're a lover of the sea, take advantage of SD's coastal location and rent a boat or a yacht to let your dog feel the wind in her hair. If you're looking for an activity that will satisfy your pup's competitive nature, catch a Padres baseball game at Petco Park where they have a special viewing area called The Barkyard just for people and their pets.

Northern Arizona

Many people are surprised to learn that Grand Canyon National Park , located in Northern Arizona, is a vacation spot that allows dogs. As Burkert explains , the South Rim is your best bet if you're bringing your furry friend.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations in the Midwest

Chicago, illinois.

"I love going to Chicago with dogs ," says Burkert. She suggests checking out the trails along Lake Michigan and exploring Navy Pier, as just a few examples of things to do.

When you get hungry, grab a slice on the patio with your pup at Paradise Park or a pint at Empirical Brewery , which is also home to a colony of beloved brewery cats .

Grand Haven, Michigan

Grand Haven is a picturesque town on Michigan's West Coast loved by tourists and their dog companions alike, mainly for the number of greenspaces and beaches. Grand Haven City Beach is a great place to go with your pup on a warm summer day. The vacation town even boasts the Must Love Dogs Boutique & Spa , a pet-friendly shopping spot where you can bring your pup to sniff around the store.

Indianapolis, Indiana

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations in the Southern U.S.

Asheville, north carolina.

The sprawling Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., allows dogs on its grounds and outdoor patios (but not inside buildings). Still, at more than 8,000 acres to explore, it's absolutely worth bringing along the pooch, especially on a beautiful day. Once you've gotten your steps in stomping around the mansion gardens, the nearby town of Asheville has a ton of pet-friendly activities for the two of you to take on, as well. Check out the street art in downtown Asheville, or sniff out some local goodies at one of the town's many bustling outdoor farmer's markets. After you've gotten your fix of city life, head out to explore the miles of trails in the Blue Ridge Mountains and book a camping spot for your and your furry friend to soak in the sounds of nature.

Charleston, South Carolina

International Dog-Friendly Vacation Ideas

Before you head out on an international adventure with your favorite travel buddy, keep in mind that there can be potential health risks when taking your dog on long flights . It may make more sense to explore the spots where you can safely bring your dog along in the car on a road trip, or even via train travel , before booking a trip to one of these pet-friendly international cities. As always, it's best to talk with your veterinarian about whether it's safe for your dog to accompany you on long flights or to visit other countries. Your vet will help you understand the risks and what you need to know before your pup gets a new passport stamp.

Venice, Italy

While may not be many sprawling greenspaces in Venice, dogs are still welcome in the charming Italian city limits. Pups are allowed in many water boats and are able to stroll the street with you.
