Best ad-blockers for Safari

Best ad-blocker Safari

Whether it’s an autoplay video covering the button you’re about to click, or a banner ad obscuring the content you’re trying to read – everyone hates adverts. Happily, the best ad-blocker for Safari will stop adverts and other annoyances from ever bothering you again.

Sophisticated ad-blockers remove a whole host of stubborn adverts, as well as trackers and fingerprinting scripts. They’ll also help prevent you from connecting to malicious websites and will neutralize threatening adware code.

Choosing from one of the multitude of ad-blockers available for Safari on the App Store can be daunting, which is why we’ve done the work for you. If you’re in a rush, our findings are summarized below:

  • Total Adblock : Our first choice for a Safari ad-blocker. Strong ad-blocking ability and can prevent social media trackers and access to malicious websites.
  • AdLock : Best budget option for a Safari ad-blocker. Able to stop ads on video and audio streaming sites. Blocks all ads by default.
  • AdGuard : Open-source ad-blocker able to stop all types of ads as well as trackers, malware and phishing websites.
  • 1Blocker : Simple to use and great for quickly creating custom rules. Stops trackers, cookies and fingerprinting scripts as well as ads.
  • Wipr : Easy installation and great at blocking ads, trackers, and cryptocurrency miners. Can also prevent EU cookie and GDPR notices.

We used the criteria below to help us narrow down the Safari ad-blocker options. If you’re interested, we have a comprehensive section on our testing process later in this article.

  • Comprehensive and reliable ad-blocking
  • Good value for money
  • No acceptable ads
  • Plenty of customization
  • Security features

Here’s a list of the best ad-blockers for safari:

1. Total Adblock

Total Adblock is a powerful ad-blocker that removes banners, video ads and pop-ups by default from Safari – but only on iPhone and iPad. Mac users will need to use a different browser if they wish to employ Total Adblock.

The software can be configured to block websites known to distribute malware, and can also remove cookie and privacy warnings on trusted websites – thus speeding up page loading times. Alternatively, adding websites to a whitelist enables them to automatically display without any filters.

Using Total Adblock’s custom filters allows you to block any elements on a web page that you’d prefer not to see. A social media tracking blocking filter stops “like” and “share” buttons from appearing on websites.

The basic Total Adblock app is free, but will not block ads on the top 15,000 websites ranked on Alexa – thus making it fairly useless. You will also get access to TotalAV virus protection and PC Tune-Up software.

  • Robust ad-blocking with subscription
  • Stops ads on streaming sites
  • Enables element blocking
  • Subscription includes TotalAV antivirus
  • Prevents social media tracking
  • Annual subscription required for usable app

BEST AD-BLOCKER: Total Adblock is our top  ad-blocker for Safari. It offers rigorous blocking of ads and malware, and the subscription includes TotalAV antivirus.

AdLock for Safari is a free extension that blocks pop-ups, autoplay videos, and banner ads; while also protecting you against trackers, bugs, analytical systems, and scammers.

The UI is immediately approachable, making it easy to get started. Toggle switches help you set preferences, and there’s a whitelist where you can add any sites that you’d rather see unfiltered. There are no acceptable ads, so you don’t need to dig around trying to turn them off. You also don’t need to worry about your data being sold to third parties.

There’s scope for more comprehensive tinkering via the ad filters – AdLock recommends using a maximum of five for peak performance. These filters are mostly drawn from EasyList, which is the most popular option for ad-blockers. You can create custom rules and AdLock also allows the removal of any element from a page, including non-ad-related callback forms and online chat boxes.

AdLock is great for streaming sites. It can remove all pre-rolls, mid-rolls, post-rolls, and otherwise unskippable video commercials. You just need to engage a special one-click script or use the AdLock player. AdLock also stops social media widgets following you from site to site.

  • Rigorous blocking
  • Good for streaming sites
  • Protects privacy
  • Extension is free
  • Extension not as powerful as app

BEST BUDGET-FRIENDLY OPTION: AdLock’s free Safari browser  extension is a reliable ad-blocker that stops ads in streaming sites.

AdGuard for Safari is a free browser extension that stops all ads, trackers and widgets. You can create custom filtering rules and manually remove any web page element. The software helps with security by issuing warnings if you unintentionally visit malicious or phishing websites.

The AdGuard home screen allows you to set up the basics: notification preferences, update intervals, and which content blockers you’d like to use. Content blockers are thematic clusters of filters. For example, the AdGuard Security Blocker contains filters that stop browser-based cryptominers, domains known to spread malware and spyware, and sites associated with fraudsters.

Alternatively, you can add filters of your choosing in the custom area, or create custom rules that apply specific filtering criteria. For example, you might want a particular element removed when visiting such-and-such website. AdGuard provides instructions on how to master rule syntax.

AdGuard doesn’t collect any user data or allow “acceptable ads”. The software is open-source, with the repository on GitHub available via the AdGuard “About” page.

  • Intercepts malicious website connections
  • Allows custom rule creation
  • Stops social media widgets
  • Doesn’t block as much as its app

CUSTOMIZATION OPTIONS: AdGuard is a powerful, open-source ad-blocker that encourages the creation of custom filters and rules.

4. 1Blocker

1Blocker uses filters to tell Safari what to stop in advance. It’s effective at removing a range of ads, trackers and fingerprinting scripts. Setup is simple and the app automatically receives cloud updates to the built-in filters.

There is plenty of scope for customization. For example, you can create rules for a defined URL or hide a particular element with a CSS selector. You can also block cookies, or allow ads for a particular site while still blocking trackers and social buttons.

1Blocker doesn’t have access to the pages you visit and doesn’t track you in any way. There are no “acceptable ads,” as funding for the app comes from subscriptions. These cost either $2.99 a month, or $14.99 for a year. There is a free version of the app, but it’s limited in what it can do. For example, you can only block either trackers or ads – not both.

1Blocker is compatible with iPhones running iOS 14.2 or later, iPads running iPadOS 14.2 or later, iPod Touches running iOS 14.2 or later, and Macbooks running macOS 10.15 or later. Any preferences and custom rules are kept in sync across all devices via iCloud.

  • Easy to use
  • Blocks fingerprinting scripts
  • Easy to create custom rules
  • Doesn’t block all types of ads
  • Best features require subscription

GREAT FOR BEGINNERS: 1Blocker is simple  to set up, with a straightforward interface that makes creating custom rules easy.

Wipr is a relatively simple ad-blocker that can nevertheless block a wide range of trackers and ads, as well as cryptocurrency miners and EU cookie notices. Its blocklist is automatically updated twice a week, ensuring not much gets past it.

If you want to block ads from the likes of YouTube and other streaming sites , you can enable Wipr Extra. This requires full website access, so consider any privacy implications in leaving it turned on long-term.

Wipr is able to block ads in apps that display websites using the Safari View Controller. Note that it is not able to help with blocking scam, phishing or other malicious sites.

If purchased in the App Store, you’ll be able to install Wipr on all the iPhone and iPads with the same Apple ID. If purchased on a Mac, you’ll be able to install it on all the Macs with the same Apple ID. Wipr costs $1.99 in each store, so you’ll have to pay $3.98 if you wish to use it on both an iPhone and a Mac, for example.

The app is compatible with iPhones running iOS 12.0 or later, iPads running iPadOS 12.0 or later, and Macs running macOS 10.15 or later.

  • Straightforward ad-blocker
  • Doesn’t protect against malicious code
  • One purchase won’t cover all devices
  • No custom rules

EASY SETUP: Wipr is a straightforward  ad-blocker that keeps itself updated and blocks a decent number of ads and trackers.

Can I use a free ad-blocker for Safari?

You can, and there are many decent free ad-blockers available. However, as with most products that seem free, there’s often a hidden cost. Some ad-blockers make money by allowing some ads through – what are sometimes called “acceptable ads.” Other, less scrupulous, apps may even sell your data to third parties.

More commonly, ad-blocking developers create a free version of the subscription-only service – typically a browser extension. This has less features than the paid-for version, but allows people to become familiar with the service and pay out when they find that they can’t live without a particular feature.

How to install a Safari ad-blocker:

If you want to use a Safari browser extension ad-blocker, follow these instructions:

  • Launch the Settings app.
  • Scroll down and tap Safari .
  • Under General , tap Content Blockers .
  • Activate your chosen content blocker by toggling the switch next to it to the green ON position.

If you’ve downloaded an ad-blocker app for Safari, follow these instructions to enable it:

  • Click on Safari in the top left-hand corner.
  • Select Safari Extensions from the drop-down menu.
  • Wait for the App Store to automatically open on the extensions page.
  • Search for the ad-blocker you’d like to add.
  • Click Get underneath the ad-blocker extension.
  • Sign in with your Apple ID if required and start downloading.
  • Click install to get the app up and running.
  • Open the extension and follow the instructions.
  • Click on Safari in the top right corner once more.
  • Select Preferences from the drop-down menu.
  • Tick the checkbox next to the ad-blocker you downloaded.

Methodology: Finding the best Safari ad-blocker

Most Safari ad-blocking extensions are capable of preventing certain cookies, images, pop-ups and other unwanted content from being downloaded. So what makes one better than the other? The best Safari ad-blockers will perform notably well when tested against the criteria below:

  • Comprehensive blocking: We expect ad-blockers to be able to block most types of advert that appears on a web page. This includes pop-ups , banners, and interstitial ads. We also require the removal of autoplay video and audio, as well as the option to stop chat boxes and pre-roll ads.
  • Good value: An expensive ad-blocker doesn’t necessarily mean it’s worth your money. We only include ad-blockers that can justify what they charge. This normally means they provide superior blocking ability with other privacy and security features.
  • No acceptable ads: We know that developers need to make money, but allowing ads on an ad-blocker doesn’t seem like the right way to do it. For this reason, we don’t recommend ad-blockers that allow paid advertising to be displayed.
  • Plenty of customization: Ruthless blocking seems great… until it isn’t. Being able to whitelist sites is a good starting point. However, a good ad-blocker allows you to create custom rules for everything from ads to trackers, cookies and notices. We also like to be able to customize blocking on an element-by-element basis.
  • Security features: It’s not just ads we want to see blocked, it’s trackers, fingerprinting script and any malicious code whatsoever. Ad-blockers that intercept connections to untrusted sites score points too.
  • Compatibility: Safari is available on all Apple devices, including Mac, iPad, and iPhone. Although all of the ad-blockers we looked at worked with Safari, they didn’t all work great across all devices. The mobile Safari app is different to the macOS Safari app, and so we only recommend ad-blockers that have been specifically designed to work across all Apple devices.

FAQs: Best ad-blocker for Safari

Does apple allow ad-blockers.

Apple began allowing ad-blockers on the iPhone and iPad versions of Safari in 2015. Devices running iOS 9 were – for the first time – permitted to add content blocking extensions to Safari.

Prior to this, the only way to block adverts was to “jailbreak” the devices, which involved replacing – or modifying – key components of the operating system with custom applications. Where subsequent security measures weren’t instigated, this resulted in their becoming easier for attackers to infiltrate.

Apple allowing ad-blocking Safari extensions negated the need to do this. At the same time, it ensured that the company could still make money from allowing advertising in apps.

Are ad-blockers legal?

Yes, though there were a slew of court cases when Apple first began allowing ad-blockers. These were brought by media companies that were heavily reliant on advertising money. None of them were successful, and the use of ad-blockers has been steadily increasing since – much to the chagrin of the ad industry.

The problem is that ads are becoming ever more invasive. Many actively prevent us from enjoying a particular website’s content until we’ve interacted with the advert. Meanwhile, ad-blockers are getting more powerful and easier to install.

Of course, the people who run that website might say that ad-blockers are morally questionable. After all, advertising revenue effectively pays for the website. There is ultimately no easy solution. Some sites try using a paywall to stay ad-free, while others incorporate adverts into their content. A short-term solution involves site owners asking users to whitelist their sites if they like them.

How do ad-blockers work?

Ad-blockers detect scripts designed to make your browser load content from the servers of ad networks. By blocking these scripts, the adverts aren’t requested or displayed. Ad-blockers can also block scripts that monitor your online behavior or contain malicious code. Ad-blockers are able to detect scripts by comparing them with huge lists of offending domains – often created by the online community.

Without these additional advertising requests playing out, pages tend to require less bandwidth and are quicker to download. Indeed, research suggests that the execution of third-party scripts can account for more than half of a page’s loading time.

Introducing the All-New AdBlock for Safari

AdBlock

AdBlock’s Blog

We know that AdBlock for Safari has gone mostly untouched by our team for a few years. And that’s just changed! We’re excited to announce that the all-new AdBlock for Safari app is officially here. It’s been completely revamped and there are many changes we hope our users will enjoy.

These changes include:

A More User-Friendly Interface with Dark Mode

AdBlock for Safari has had a major face lift. It’s modern and easier to navigate, and now offers a new feature called “Online Health.” Online Health allows you to see how healthy your internet connection is in terms of online security . With this tool, you’re able to have more control over your internet connection by assessing your health score. You can up this score by using both ad blocking and VPN features to ensure that your connection is encrypted, private, and safe from snoops.

The new interface also comes with dark mode, reducing the amount of light coming from your screen while allowing the app to remain visible. And it’s perfect for those users that prefer darker shades as they use their Mac.

Improved Ad Blocking Functionality

Along with a new look comes better ad blocking. AdBlock for Safari will now have more regular updates to its filter lists . This means we’ll be able to address any ads that circumvent our ad blocker more quickly, and be able to block more ads for our users overall.

And what’s even more exciting is that custom allow lists will now be part of basic ad blocking. That means they’re now free! With custom allow lists, you’ll be able to allow ads on specific sites of your choice, giving you more control over your browsing experience.

Integration with AdBlock VPN

You can now upgrade and manage AdBlock VPN right from the AdBlock for Safari mac app. And using AdBlock VPN will increase your Online Health score, giving you confirmation that your internet connection is well protected.

If you’re unsure of what a VPN is, it’s a great tool for your online security toolkit. VPNs (also called virtual private networks) allow you to connect to the internet privately. They create an encrypted connection, often referred to as a ‘tunnel,’ between your devices and the VPN servers. All of your internet traffic is routed through that secure tunnel, keeping your data encrypted and your personal information secure. This keeps your data safe from third party snoops and hackers.

With AdBlock VPN, you can:

  • Browse the web anonymously. Your web traffic is routed through AdBlock VPN servers and each time you connect, your IP address is replaced with a new address from AdBlock VPN’s network of virtual locations, allowing you to hide your online identity .
  • Access unblocked content. Need access to a website or content that’s blocked by location? Our VPN allows you to connect to the internet through different servers all over the world. This may allow you to avoid censorship in some regions, and access the content you want from wherever you are.
  • Connect safely to public Wi-Fi. AdBlock VPN helps reduce the vulnerability associated with connecting to a public Wi-Fi hotspot by creating an encrypted connection between your device and the web, making it more difficult for anyone to track or monitor you without your consent.
  • Connect up to six devices . Use up to six devices with AdBlock VPN, including Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS devices. The AdBlock VPN interface makes it easy to connect, manage, and remove your devices.

We’re excited for you to give the new AdBlock for Safari a try! If you’re already a user, your app will automatically update as long as you’ve left the “Auto-update Apps” feature on in the app store. And if you’re not already a user, simply head to the Mac App store to download the app. We’re here for you if you have any questions or feedback at [email protected] .

The best ad blockers in 2024

Say goodbye to irritating online advertising with the best ad blockers

best ad blockers

Best in-browser ad blockers

Best ad-blocking apps, best ad-blocking mobile apps, other privacy-focused extensions and apps.

The best ad blockers are crucial to survive on the modern internet. It often feels like it's impossible to go anywhere online without being harassed by pop-ups, tracker cookies, malvertising and all sort of digital nasties that seem hell-bent on ruining your browsing. The worse part is that these things still plague you if your browsing is above-board — putting you at risk.

Thankfully there's no shortage of apps and browser extensions that can block ads and keep you safer when you're online. Blocking ads and all the other irrelevant stuff that you may encounter. Combined with the best antivirus software and the best VPNs , a good ad-blocker gives you a perfect arsenal of tools to offer as much protection as possible. Even the FBI recommends using an ad-blocker for protection.

The only thing you need to figure out is which ad-blocker is right for you. There are so many to choose from, and whether you are willing to live with the downsides. Most free sites rely on advertising revenue to survive, including Tom's Guide. But if you're happy with the trade-off, we've got a thorough list of the best ad blockers and privacy tools — with options for every browser and platform.

The best ad blockers you can get today

1. adblock plus (chrome, edge, firefox, opera, safari, android, ios).

best ad blockers: adblock plus

AdBlock Plus (ABP) is among the most popular ad blockers, with extensions available for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Edge and Opera. ABP features a quick setup, loading preset filter lists that allow users to quickly block most ads, as well as the option to filter malware and social media buttons.

Savvy users can chose additional block lists as well as set custom filters or whitelist their favorite sites to keep their ad revenue in the black. AdBlock Plus allows what it calls "non-intrusive advertising" through filters; that may irk some users, though this feature can be disabled in settings.

On Android, the AdBlock Browser provides a Firefox-based browser that blocks incoming advertising, while on iOS, the AdBlock Plus app integrates with the content blocker system to seamlessly block advertising on Safari with minimal setup.

Download AdBlock Plus: Firefox , Chrome , Safari , Opera , Edge

2. AdBlock (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)

best ad blockers: AdBlock

AdBlock (no relation to AdBlock Plus) is the other best ad-blocking browser extension of note, available for users of Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari. AdBlock uses a series of filter lists to automatically block ad content coming from known ad servers and providers. Users can stick with the default block lists, subscribe to additional ones, or even create their own, as well as whitelist their favorite websites.

As one of the most downloaded Chrome and Safari extensions, AdBlock has the trust of many users worldwide.

Download AdBlock: Chrome , Firefox , Safari , Edge

3. uBlock Origin (Chrome, Firefox)

best ad blockers: Ublock Origin

Ublock Origin is a browser-based ad blocker that focuses on simple, efficient blocking with a low resource overhead. The extension comes loaded with a number of filter lists for known advertising and malware sources, with extra filter lists available and the option to read and create your own custom filters from hosts files.

Download Ublock Origin: Chrome , Firefox

4. Poper Blocker (Chrome)

best ad blockers: Poper Blocker

Rather than be an all-in one blocking solution, Poper Blocker (aka Pop Up Blocker For Chrome), is designed to complement other adblockers.

In this case, Poper Blocker focuses on blocking pop-ups, pop-unders, overlays, timed and scroll pop-ups, and other varieties that might slip past other ad-blocking extensions. Small notifications tell you when pop-ups are blocked. You also can view your blocking stats, but otherwise, you can generally just keep Poper Blocker running in the background with minimal impact alongside other adblocker extensions.

Download Poper Blocker: Chrome

5. Stands Fair AdBlocker (Chrome)

best ad blockers: Stands Fair AdBlocker

For a fast and light ad-blocking plugin, Chrome users can turn to Stands Fair AdBlocker. The extension does precisely what it promises, blocking ads and pop-ups from cluttering up your browser view while also preventing any tracking from going on.

Stand's Fair AdBlocker gives you control over the type of ads you can block, specifying everything from autoplay video ads, YouTube ads, expanding ads and more. It can even block Facebook ads if you want.

The "Fair" part of AdBlocker comes into play by giving you the ability to allow certain types of ads or even whitelist ad-supported websites you don't want to shortchange of badly needed revenue. This is one ad blocker that doesn't take a scorched earth approach to its stated purpose.

Download Stands Fair AdBlocker: Chrome

6. Ghostery (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Edge)

best ad blockers: ghostery

Like the other extensions on our list of the best ad blockers, Ghostery can remove ads from webpages, so you can focus on content and browse more efficiently. But the real value in Ghostery lies in its privacy protection features. You can use Ghostery to view trackers, which lets you see who's trying to collect data on you. With Ghostery, you can also stop that tracking from taking place. If you really want to safeguard your privacy, you can turn to Ghostery's Enhanced Anti Tracking to anonymize your data.

Ghostery's a free download that offers basic web protection. More advanced protection starts at $4.99 a month and the $11.99 monthly tier comes with a built-in VPN. There are also versions of Ghostery that work with Android and iOS devices.

Download Ghostery: Chrome , Firefox , Opera , Safari , Edge

7. Adblocker for YouTube (Chrome, Firefox)

Adblocker for YouTube is one of the best ad blockers

YouTube has gotten more aggressive with ads, so the makers of ad-blocking extensions have followed suit. Adblocker for YouTube is a Chrome extension that promises to automatically block YouTube ads, whether we're talking about the pre-roll ad appearing before your video or any text and banner ads that appear on the video itself.

If you prefer Firefox to Chrome, there's also an AdBlocker for YouTube extension that works on that browser. Same name, different developer apparently, but the functionality of stripping out video and display ads remains. This version works on Android devices too.

Download Adblocker for YouTube: Chrome , Firefox

1. AdGuard (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS)

best ad blockers: adguard ad blocker

Uses looking for a more robust experience can try out the subscription-based AdGuard, which provides desktop and mobile options to reduce the ads you see when surfing online.

AdGuard on Windows and Mac covers popular browsers, with highly configurable options for ads, content, and tracker blocking, as well as a parental controls module for restricting adult content. AdGuard for Android is a no-root ad-blocker that blocks advertising on apps and games, though you’ll have to install it from AdGuard’s site instead of through Google Play. AdGuard for iOS works with Safari to effectively filter ads on the default browser.

Download AdGuard: Windows , Mac , Android , iOS

2. AdLock ($33 per year)

best ad blockers: adlock

AdLock avoids the browser-based route, instead opting to run as a separate program to be able to block not only browser-based ads, but also advertising in other programs like Skype or games.

The app runs in the background, using filters to block ads, popups, and autoplaying videos, speeding up loading times and applying Safe Browsing features to automatically block sites that are known to be unsafe.

For obvious reasons, the mobile version is unavailable on the Google Play Store, so you'll need to sideload the app if you want to get AdLock into your Android device. iOS users can download AdLock directly from Apple's App Store.

Download AdLock: Windows , Chrome ,  Android , Mac , iOS

3. Wipr (macOS, iOS; $1.99)

best ad blockers: Wipr

If you’re a Safari fan, Wipr may be the best ad blocker for both your Mac and iPhone. The app is available for both iOS and macOS — costing $1.99 from either Apple App Store — and it promises to work with Safari as well as apps that use Safari for displaying web pages.

You’ll find a full array of features with Wipr, which not only blocks apps and trackers, but cryptocurrency miners, EU cookie and GDPR notices and anything else that gets in your way of surfing the web. Its blocklist gets updated twice a week, and there’s little configuration; the idea is that you load Wipr and forget that it’s there while it does its job in the background.

With Wipr, pages should load faster in Safari, which will be particularly welcome if you’re surfing from an iPhone, where ads and trackers can bog down your browser’s speed.

Download Wipr: macOS , iOS

1. 1Blocker (iOS)

best ad blockers: 1Blocker X ad blockers

1Blocker was one of the first really good ad blockers on iOS when Apple opened up that functionality on iPhones and iPads; the apps has since been optimized for Safari.

The app is designed to make browsing faster and more secure by blocking ads, popups, trackers and other online cruft. Rather than blocking content of a downloaded page, 1Blocker works with Safari's content blocker API to tell the browser what to block in advance, saving time and resources.

1Blocker features more than 115,000 blocker rules, custom regional adblocking settings, and easy-to-use custom rules settings. The app is a free download, with premium features available as in-app purchases.

Download 1Blocker: iOS

2. Firefox Focus (Android, iOS)

best ad blockers: firefox focus

Firefox Focus is another addition to Mozilla's family of browsers. This one's a privacy-oriented version of Firefox that bakes in ad-blocking and anti-tracking into a light and functional package. Firefox Focus blocks ads and speeds up browsing, while also working in privacy-friendly features like automatic history and cookie clearing.

Users can selectively block ads, analytics, content and social trackers with easy toggles, turn on a "stealth" mode, and set a default search engine.

Our look at the best Android browsers has more on the various flavors of Firefox.

Download Firefox Focus: Android , iOS

3. AdClear (Android, iOS)

AdClear Plus running on an iPhone is one of the best ad blockers for mobile

AdClear — or AdClear Plus if you're searching for the iOS version — offers the kind of mobile ad blocking in browsers that similar apps provide. But AdClear takes it one step farther by also blocking ads in apps.

AdClear achieves this through a DNS changer feature that routes traffic through a VPN. AdClear doesn't catch everything in all apps, and in our experience, some apps ran a little slower. But this free download can put a stop to ads interrupting what you're trying to do whether in an app or a browser.

Download AdClear: Android , iOS

1. Decentraleyes (Chrome, Firefox)

Best ad blockers: decentraleyes

Some times, blocking ads can also prevent websites fromn pulling needed resoruces and libraries from third-party sources, breaking web pages in the process. Decentraleyes tries to stop that from happening by acting as a local content delivery network emulator to serve up the files that websites need. By doing so, this extension can stop websites from sending out requests to the likes of Google Hosted Libraries.

Think of Decentraleyes as a complement to ad blockers. In fact, the extension specifically says it can work with uBlock Origin and AdBlock Plus, both of which we recommend up above.

Download Decentraleyes: Chrome , Firefox

2. Opera (Desktop, Android, iOS)

best ad blockers: opera best ad blocker

The Opera browser bakes in ad-blocking features into the browser without the need for an extra add-on, while also offering privacy-friendly tools such as an unlimited, built-in VPN service, incognito mode, fraud and malware warnings for suspicious links and pages, and more. In addition, you can further customize Opera's capabilities with a wide array of extensions.

Mobile users need not fret, as the Android version comes with just about everything the desktop version has but built for touch-screen interfaces. On iOS, the mobile version of Opera is listed in Apple's App Store as Opera Touch. (Incidentally, we've got a guide on how you can use Opera to block ads on the iPhone .)

Download Opera: Mac or Windows , Android , iOS

3. Privacy Badger (Chrome, Firefox, Opera)

best ad blockers: privacy badger ad blocker

The Electronic Frontier Foundation's Privacy Badger browser extension was born from the EFF's concerns about the business models of some privacy tools and ad blockers.

Privacy Badger functions similarly to extensions like AdBlock Plus (on which it was based), observing the various tracking tools that advertisers and other third parties might use to track your online activities and selectively blocking them from executing. Built-in learning algorithms adapt to the sites you visit and take any new tracking tools discovered into account.

While not explicitly an ad blocker, Privacy Badger does also block some advertising, depending on how aggressively the ads track you across websites.

4. Tor Browser (Desktop, Android)

best ad blockers: tor project browser

The Tor network helps anonymize your internet activity by bouncing the data you send and receive through a distributed anonymous network of routers to foil a common online surveillance technique called traffic analysis, which can reveal the sites you visit or who you're communicating with.

The Tor Browser is an all-in-one package that includes everything you need to surf the net through the Tor network in an easy-to-install portable package. The package includes a modified version of Firefox with privacy aids such as NoScript baked in, and an automatic setup aid that makes it easy to connect to and create new Tor circuits.

On the desktop, you can grab a version of Tor Browser for Windows, macOS or Linux. There's also a version of Tor Browser for Android, which replaces the previous OrBot + OrFox combination recommended for browsing Tor on Android.

5. Onion Browser (iOS)

best ad blockers: onion browser ad blocker

iOS users aren’t left out when it comes to browsing the Tor anonymizer network, with the Onion Browser among the more popular options on Apple’s mobile OS.

Previously a premium app, Onion Browser has since moved to a donation model, opening up access to everyone who wants to download the app, without compromising security or features. The usual caveats apply: Browsing through Tor will slow down the web experience, and some features, like video streams and video files won’t work in order to preserve anonymity.

How to choose the best ad blocker for you

Many of the best ad blockers are available for free, either as extensions or as standalone apps, though a few, like AdLock, charge a fee. Determine if the free services provide enough ad-blocking to meet your needs or whether a paid app delivers more for your money. You should also figure out if a browser extension will take care of your ad-blocking needs or whether you should consider switching browsers to one with more built-in privacy features.

You can narrow down your choice in ad blockers by deciding specifically what you're looking to accomplish with such an app or extension. Do you just want to stop annoying pop-up ads from appearing or do you want the full range of services, including privacy features and an end to ad-tracking? Grab the ad blocker that ticks off all the boxes on your wishlist.

Some ad blockers, such as AdBlock Plus include filters and the ability to let in non-obtrusive advertising. Others, like AdBlocker Ultimate, take a more aggressive approach. Find out which one best suits your needs and comfort level.

As we noted at the outset, there's also an ethical component to ad blockers. Do you feel comfortable keeping ad revenue out of the hands of sites you enjoy and use for free? As good as the best ad blockers are, that's still a trade-off you need to consider when deciding whether to install one as a browser extension or as a standalone app.

Introduction

In today's digital age, web browsing has become an integral part of our daily lives. Whether it's for work, entertainment, or staying informed, we rely on web browsers to access a wealth of information. However, the online experience can often be disrupted by intrusive advertisements that not only hinder the browsing flow but also compromise user privacy and security. This is where ad blockers come into play.

Ad blockers are browser extensions or software tools designed to filter out and block various forms of online advertisements, including pop-ups, banners, and video ads. By doing so, they aim to provide users with a cleaner, faster, and more secure browsing experience. When it comes to Safari, Apple's native web browser , users have several options to choose from, including built-in content blockers and third-party ad blockers.

In this article, we will explore the best ad blockers for Safari, shedding light on the built-in content blockers provided by Apple and the third-party solutions available in the App Store. Additionally, we will delve into the key features to consider when selecting an ad blocker, empowering you to make an informed decision that aligns with your browsing preferences and privacy concerns. So, whether you're a casual internet surfer or a power user, understanding the landscape of ad blockers for Safari will undoubtedly enhance your browsing experience and protect your online privacy. Let's dive in and discover the optimal ad blocking solution for your Safari browsing needs.

Built-in Safari Content Blockers

Safari, Apple's native web browser, comes equipped with built-in content blockers that offer a basic level of ad blocking functionality. These content blockers are designed to enhance the browsing experience by reducing the visibility of intrusive ads and preventing certain types of tracking. The primary purpose of these built-in blockers is to improve page loading times and protect user privacy while browsing the web.

One of the key advantages of utilizing Safari's built-in content blockers is their seamless integration with the browser, ensuring a smooth and efficient ad blocking experience without the need to install additional third-party extensions. These blockers work in the background, automatically filtering out known ad domains and preventing them from loading on web pages. This results in a cleaner and less cluttered browsing environment, allowing users to focus on the content they wish to consume without being bombarded by irrelevant or disruptive advertisements.

Furthermore, Safari's content blockers are designed to mitigate the impact of tracking technologies commonly employed by advertisers and third-party entities. By limiting the ability of these trackers to gather user data and behavior, Safari users can enjoy a heightened level of privacy and security while navigating the internet. This aligns with Apple's commitment to prioritizing user privacy and safeguarding personal information from unauthorized tracking and data collection practices.

It's important to note that while Safari's built-in content blockers offer a degree of ad blocking and privacy protection, they may not provide the same level of customization and advanced features found in third-party ad blockers. Users seeking more comprehensive ad blocking capabilities, such as the ability to create custom filter lists, block specific elements on web pages, or access detailed statistics on blocked content, may find that third-party ad blockers better cater to their needs.

In summary, Safari's built-in content blockers serve as a foundational layer of ad blocking and privacy protection within the browser. They offer a streamlined approach to reducing the presence of ads and curtailing tracking activities, contributing to a more pleasant and secure browsing experience for Safari users. However, individuals with specific preferences for advanced ad blocking features and customization options may opt to explore third-party ad blockers available in the App Store to further tailor their browsing environment to their liking.

Third-Party Ad Blockers for Safari

In addition to Safari's native content blockers, users have the option to augment their ad blocking capabilities by leveraging third-party ad blockers available in the App Store. These third-party solutions offer a diverse range of features and customization options, catering to the varying needs and preferences of Safari users. By integrating these ad blockers into Safari, users can further enhance their browsing experience, fortify their privacy, and gain greater control over the types of content displayed during their online sessions.

One of the primary advantages of third-party ad blockers for Safari is the extensive array of filtering options they provide. These ad blockers empower users to fine-tune their ad blocking preferences, allowing them to create custom filter lists, block specific ad formats, and even target elements within web pages that are not effectively addressed by Safari's built-in content blockers. This level of granularity enables users to tailor their ad blocking settings to align with their individual preferences and browsing habits, resulting in a more personalized and refined ad blocking experience.

Furthermore, many third-party ad blockers for Safari offer advanced privacy protection features that extend beyond basic ad blocking functionality. These features may include the ability to block tracking scripts, prevent the execution of malicious code, and safeguard against online threats such as malware and phishing attempts. By integrating these comprehensive privacy protection measures, users can navigate the web with heightened confidence, knowing that their online activities are shielded from potential security risks and intrusive tracking technologies.

Additionally, some third-party ad blockers provide users with detailed insights and statistics related to their browsing experience. These insights may encompass metrics such as the number of ads blocked, the types of ads encountered, and the overall impact of the ad blocker on page loading times. By gaining visibility into the effectiveness of the ad blocker, users can gauge the tangible benefits it brings to their browsing sessions, reinforcing the value of integrating third-party ad blockers into their Safari environment.

It's important to note that the availability of third-party ad blockers in the App Store presents users with a diverse selection of options, each offering unique features and approaches to ad blocking. As such, individuals seeking to leverage third-party ad blockers for Safari are encouraged to explore the available options, assess their feature sets, and select a solution that best aligns with their specific ad blocking requirements and privacy preferences.

In summary, third-party ad blockers for Safari serve as valuable extensions that complement Safari's built-in content blockers, offering users enhanced customization, advanced privacy protection, and detailed insights into their ad blocking activities. By incorporating these third-party solutions into their browsing arsenal, Safari users can elevate their online experience, mitigate the impact of intrusive ads, and fortify their privacy and security while navigating the digital landscape.

Features to Consider When Choosing an Ad Blocker

When evaluating ad blockers for Safari, it's essential to consider a range of features that can significantly impact the effectiveness and user experience of the chosen solution. By carefully assessing these features, users can make informed decisions that align with their browsing preferences, privacy concerns, and overall ad blocking requirements.

1. Customization Options

An ideal ad blocker should offer robust customization options, allowing users to tailor their ad blocking settings to suit their individual preferences. This may include the ability to create custom filter lists, block specific ad formats, and selectively enable or disable ad blocking on certain websites. Customization empowers users to fine-tune their ad blocking experience, ensuring that it aligns with their unique browsing habits and content consumption preferences.

2. Privacy Protection

Beyond ad blocking, a comprehensive ad blocker should prioritize user privacy by incorporating features that mitigate tracking technologies, block malicious scripts, and safeguard against online threats such as malware and phishing attempts. By integrating advanced privacy protection measures, users can navigate the web with confidence, knowing that their personal information and online activities are shielded from intrusive tracking and potential security risks.

3. Performance and Resource Efficiency

Efficient ad blockers should not compromise browsing speed or consume excessive system resources. Users should look for ad blockers that deliver effective ad blocking capabilities without significantly impacting page loading times or consuming excessive memory and CPU resources. A well-optimized ad blocker ensures a seamless browsing experience while effectively filtering out intrusive ads.

4. User-Friendly Interface

A user-friendly interface is crucial for ensuring a positive ad blocking experience. The ad blocker should offer intuitive controls, clear settings, and transparent feedback to users regarding the ads being blocked. Additionally, the interface should facilitate easy access to customization options and privacy settings, enabling users to manage their ad blocking preferences with ease.

5. Regular Updates and Support

Selecting an ad blocker that receives regular updates and ongoing support is essential for maintaining optimal ad blocking performance and addressing emerging ad-related challenges. Users should prioritize ad blockers that are actively maintained and supported by the developers, ensuring that the solution remains effective in combating evolving ad formats and online threats.

6. Compatibility and Integration

Compatibility with the latest versions of Safari and seamless integration with the browser's ecosystem are critical factors to consider. Users should opt for ad blockers that seamlessly integrate with Safari, providing a cohesive and uninterrupted browsing experience without compatibility issues or conflicts with other browser extensions.

By carefully evaluating these features, Safari users can identify ad blockers that align with their specific needs, ultimately enhancing their browsing experience, fortifying their privacy, and mitigating the impact of intrusive advertisements.

In conclusion, the landscape of ad blockers for Safari offers users a diverse array of options to enhance their browsing experience, mitigate the impact of intrusive ads, and fortify their online privacy. Safari's built-in content blockers provide a foundational level of ad blocking and privacy protection, seamlessly integrated into the browser to streamline the browsing experience and curtail tracking activities. However, for users seeking advanced customization, comprehensive privacy protection, and detailed insights into their ad blocking activities, third-party ad blockers available in the App Store serve as valuable extensions that complement Safari's native capabilities.

When choosing an ad blocker for Safari, users should consider a range of essential features to ensure that the selected solution aligns with their browsing preferences and privacy concerns. Customization options, privacy protection measures, performance efficiency, user-friendly interfaces, regular updates and support, as well as compatibility and integration with Safari, are pivotal factors to evaluate when making an informed decision.

By leveraging third-party ad blockers, Safari users can gain greater control over their ad blocking preferences, fine-tune their privacy settings, and access advanced features that cater to their individual browsing habits. The ability to create custom filter lists, block specific ad formats, and safeguard against tracking technologies empowers users to curate a personalized and secure browsing environment, free from the disruptions caused by intrusive advertisements.

Ultimately, the optimal ad blocker for Safari is one that seamlessly integrates with the browser, delivers effective ad blocking capabilities without compromising performance, and prioritizes user privacy and security. By leveraging the built-in content blockers and exploring third-party ad blockers available in the App Store, Safari users can elevate their online experience, enjoy a cleaner and more secure browsing environment, and take control of the content they encounter during their web sessions.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the importance of ad blockers in preserving user privacy and enhancing the browsing experience cannot be overstated. By staying informed about the available ad blocking options and considering the key features outlined in this article, Safari users can navigate the web with confidence, knowing that their online activities are shielded from intrusive ads and potential security threats, ultimately fostering a more enjoyable and secure browsing experience.

Three Ways to Block Ads on Safari

block ads on Safari

Why ads are often dangerous

Everyone knows that ads and pop-ups are annoying. However, they don’t only take up space on web pages, they’re often capable of causing real harm. When clicked on, many ads and pop-ups will lead you to phishing sites where your confidential and financial information could potentially be stolen. Some ads are also capable of tampering with your web browser’s homepage and redirecting you to unwanted websites. Although what is most concerning about some ads is the fact that they contain malware that can be secretly downloaded onto your Mac. To combat everything mentioned, it’s necessary to block ads and pop-ups on websites.

How to block ads and pop-ups

1. hide ads in reader view on safari.

Safari provides Reader View for users to enjoy an ad-free reading experience.

If you want to allow pop-ups on a specific website, you can visit the website in Safari, and select “Allow” from the drop-down menu.

Block ad Safari_0906_6

If you want to block pop-ups on all websites, then select “Block and Notify” or “Block” from the drop-down menus of both “Currently Open Websites” and “When visiting other websites”. The drop-down menu has three choices: “Block and Notify”, “Block” and “Allow”. “Block and Notify” means a site’s pop-ups won’t appear but you can display them by clicking an icon in the Smart Search field. “Block” means pop-ups are totally blocked. However, sometimes pop-ups are a necessary part of a site, so for most people, we would recommend choosing “Block and Notify”.

Allow Safari to warn you about fraudulent sites

To enable this function, please go to Safari > Preferences > Security. Tick the box next to “Warn when visiting a fraudulent website”.

3. Use browser AdBlocker to block ads and pop-ups: AdBlock One

This article explains how to use content blockers to block ads in Safari on iPhones with iOS 9 or higher.

Your phone must have iOS 9 or higher to use content blockers. Update the iPhone OS to ensure it has the most up-to-date version with current security patches.

How to Block Ads on iPhone With Safari

Using an ad blocker for your iPhone means your browser won't download ads. This usually means faster page loads, a longer-lasting battery, and less wireless data usage. If you don't want to see pop-up ads, there is a way to block these ads. Here's how to do so using the Safari web browser for iPhone.

Content blockers are apps that add new features that your default web browser doesn't have. These are like third-party keyboards —separate apps that work inside other apps that support them. This means that to block ads, you need to install at least one of these apps.

Most iPhone content blockers work the same way. When you go to a website, the app checks a list of ad services and servers. If it finds these on the site you're visiting, the app blocks the website from loading those ads on the page. Some apps take a comprehensive approach by blocking the ads and tracking the cookies used by advertisers based on those cookies' URLs .

How to Install Content Blocking Apps

To block ads with Safari content blocker apps, install the app, and then enable it from the iPhone Settings app.

Go to the App Store and download a content-blocking app to your iPhone. The example here is Norton Ad Blocker, but all ad-blocking apps work similarly. See the list below for other suggested apps.

Open the ad blocker app and follow the instructions to set it up. Every app is different, but each offers instructions to turn on the ad-blocking abilities.

On the iPhone home screen, open the Settings app.

Select Safari > Content Blockers .

Move the toggle switch next to the ad-blocker app you installed to On (green).

Choose an Ad-Blocking Plug-In for Safari

There is a sizable market for ad-blocking Safari plug-ins. The following options can get you started:

  • 1Blocker : Free, with in-app purchases. In addition to more than 50,000 built-in blocker rules, this app supports custom rules to block sites and cookies and to hide other elements.
  • Crystal Adblock : At $0.99, the developer claims that this ad blocker loads pages four times faster and uses 50 percent less data. This app also lets you opt to view ads on some sites to support those sites.
  • Norton Ad Blocker : This free ad-blocking app from the company behind the popular and long-running antivirus software also lets you add exceptions.
  • Purify : Grab this content blocker for $1.99 to block ads and tracking software. It includes a list (typically called a whitelist) to allow you to see ads on some sites if you like. According to the developer, after blocking Safari ads with this app, you can expect a fourfold increase in page load speeds and your web browsing data usage to be cut in half.

How to Block Pop-Ups on the iPhone Using Built-In Tools

Ad-blocking apps can block all kinds of ads and trackers used by advertisers. If you only want to block intrusive pop-ups, you don't need to download an app because pop-up blocking is a built-in feature in Safari. Here's what you need to do:

On the iPhone home screen, select Settings > Safari .

Toggle the Block Pop-ups switch to On (green), if it isn't already.

You can enable the Safari pop-up blocker on your computer, too.

The main benefit of blocking ads is that you don't see advertising. However, there are other key benefits to using these anti-advertisement apps:

  • Websites load faster : Ads are extra elements on the page that have to load, and ads often stream video or play animations. It takes time for the page to fully download and often causes other things like non-ad images and videos to take longer to display.
  • You'll be more secure : Many ads are vectors for malware. Infected ads hit a network, even a legitimate one, to disrupt your device.
  • You use less data : When you no longer see ads, you won't use your monthly data allowances to load ads. Some ad-blocking apps claim to save you lots of data. While their numbers may be inflated, you'll reduce your data usage to some degree because ad images and videos don't download to your phone.
  • A longer-lasting battery : Downloading ads, just like downloading anything in Safari, requires energy. One way to have a longer-lasting battery is to stop downloading so much data, which is what happens when you use an ad blocker.

Why You Shouldn't Block Ads

One downside you might encounter when you block ads on your iPhone is that some websites don't load properly. Some sites detect whether their ads load, and if ads don't load, you can't use the site until you unblock their ads.

Almost every site on the internet makes the majority of its money by showing advertising to its readers. If the ads are blocked, the site doesn't get paid. The money made from advertising pays writers and editors, funds server and bandwidth costs, buys equipment, pays for photography and travel, and more. Without that income, it's possible that a site you visit every day could go out of business. Consider supporting your favorite sites by whitelisting them, so ads on those sites still display.

I use the same ad blocker on my Mac. They don’t ask for weird permissions, and it works like a charm so I figured to use it on my phone as well. Really it’s a fantastic must have on both platforms. I have yet to see any ads slip past if I don’t want to see them.

Block pop-up ads and windows in Safari

Learn how to block pop-up windows and handle persistent ads on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Pop-ups can be ads, notices, offers, or alerts that open in your current browser window, in a new window, or in another tab. Some pop-ups are third-party ads that use phishing tactics such as warnings or prizes to trick you into believing they’re from Apple or another trusted company, so that you’ll share personal or financial information. Or they might claim to offer free downloads, software updates, or plug-ins to try to trick you into installing unwanted software.

Use these tips to help manage pop-ups and other unwanted interruptions.

Avoid interacting with pop-ups

Unless you’re confident that they are a legitimate ad, avoid interacting with pop-ups or webpages that seem to take over your screen.

If you see an annoying pop-up ad in Safari, you can go to the Search field and enter a new URL or search term to browse to a new site. If you don’t see the Search field on your iPhone or iPad, tap the top of the screen to make it appear.

Some pop-ups and ads have fake buttons that resemble a close button, so use caution if you try to close a pop-up or ad. If you're not sure, avoid interacting with it and close the Safari window or tab.

On your Mac, you can quit Safari, then press and hold the Shift key while opening Safari. This prevents Safari from automatically reopening any windows or tabs that were open.

Update your software

Always install the latest software updates for all of your Apple products. Many software releases have important security updates and may include improvements that help control pop-ups.

The safest way to download apps for your Mac is from the App Store. If you need software that isn’t available from the App Store, get it directly from the developer or another reliable source, rather than through an ad or link.

Check Safari settings

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Safari.

Turn on Block Pop-ups.

Turn on Fraudulent Website Warning.

On your Mac, open Safari and choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences) from the menu bar.

In the Websites tab , you can configure options to allow or block some or all pop-ups .

In the Security tab , turn on the setting to warn when visiting a fraudulent website.

If adware or other unwanted software is installed on Mac

If you see pop-ups on your Mac that just won’t go away, you might have unintentionally downloaded and installed adware (advertising-supported software) or other unwanted software. Certain third-party download sites might include software that you don’t want along with the software that you do.

If you think that you might have malware or adware on your Mac:

Update to the latest version of macOS. If your Mac is already using the latest version, restart your Mac. macOS includes a built-in tool that removes known malware when restarting.

Check your Applications folder to see if you have any apps that you don't expect. You can uninstall those apps .

Check the Extensions tab in Safari settings to see if you installed any unnecessary extensions. You can turn extensions off .

If you continue to see advertising or other unwanted programs on your Mac, contact Apple.

Best Adblocker

Straightforward UI thats not overly complicated and easily allows the user to custom choose what protection they would like. AdGuard has also included its own set of rules that have been built from easylist/easyprivacy & fanboy list and specifically customized them for the mobile platform and iOS specifically that can used by themselves, with easylist, or not at all. They give full control to the user, no sponsor ads or paid ads are allowed through. There is a filter that allows self promotion ads like the ones see when using googles search engine, but the user can turn it off and on. If none of AdGuards syntax rules block a specific popup, ad, or third-party widget there’s an option to manually block it and add it to the user filter option so its blocked in the future. Whitelist is also available to turn rules off on certain websites. And the rules update multiple times throughout the day regularly so the latest adblock protection is always used.

Love, love, love!!!

This extension does it all, I’m a victim of identity theft and this has been a God Send. For over ten years someone has sit around watching my ever move through my main email with yahoo. I had this email for over 15 yrs now. These people took every financial account I had and then spent money on everyone. They have accounts with each of the credit bureaus, they have subjected me to countless data breaches, in which they claimed my claim in their names.I have had no relief since August 2020 when I first found out that my identity was stolen. Sorry I’m rambling but I just cannot say enough about this AdGuard, it has given me relief it has given me options in my reliefAnd just when I thought it couldn’t get any better I got an invitation to do the testing! I’m at awe at the work you all have put in to help others, I would have given as many stars as there were if there could be more. My only complaint is I have bought the upgrade and it got stolen because these people are roothless and make aliases to every email account I make, then they take it over. This has happened with many apps and extensions not just this one! However, this one is by far my favorite then and now and probably forever. If you need something g that really works and that is user friendly, I’d urge you to try AdGuard and AdGuard VPN as well it’s a package deal really.

Unprofessional service

I purchased ad guard for life time approximately fews months already. And I enjoyed the powerful ad blocking. However, since the AdGuard, there is always a window popped out in my MAC said apple wants to make some changes. I ignored at first. However I could not stand any note after frequently annoying popped out windows hundreds of times after, and I agreed the change Which disabled the adguard. I tried reset all settings and reinstalled it. It just didn’t work any more. Therefore, I tried to contract with the AdGuard service. One point I want to mention that I was pretty impressive AdGuard service works for 24 hours even in quarantine time. However, the guy was not professional at all. I followed his instructions reset and reinstalled at first which did not work, and he once remotely controlled my Mac, but the problem still didn’t solve. Finally, he left a message said this case is not typical but I will asked for our workers solved it and contacted you at most in 48hours. THIS IS A FAKE PROMISE AGAIN! yes! Before, he just kept giving me fake promise. And this time I waited 4 days already. No replying, and even the phone is not available now. I tried to have my best attitude because I understand their jobs are not easy. But at lease, giving back me a professional attitude and available credit. BECAUSE I SAW THERE WOULD BE LIFE TIME GUARANTEE WHEN I TRUSTED AND PURCHASED LICENSE FOR LIFE TIME WHICH IS NOT CHEAP!!!
Hello, dear jasocci! We are sad to hear that you have problems using our application. Please, contact me at [email protected]. I could help you with the issue. Thanks for your`s feedback. Best regards, Konstantin G!

What if I don't need a fully functional mail service?

Very often users don't need a fully functional email account, but just a temporary or anonymous mailbox. It can come in handy when registering on new sites or services where you are not sure of long-term use, for one-time purchases in online stores, to participate in promotions, etc.

Advantages of temporary mail over full-featured email accounts

Temporary mail offers a number of advantages over permanent email accounts that can be useful in various situations:

Choosing temporary mail means you don't have to disclose your primary email, ensuring you remain anonymous.

Safety from spam

By using a temporary address, you keep unsolicited emails away from your main inbox.

Quick and easy to create

Setting up a temporary mailbox is typically immediate, without registration or personal details required.

Temporary emails are great for one-time website registrations without tying them to your main email.

Automatic deletion

These mailboxes often come with an auto-delete feature after a set duration, saving you cleanup time.

The majority of temporary email providers offer their services for free.

Phishing protection

A temporary email can act as a buffer, safeguarding your primary account from potential threats and malicious scams.

The list of top temporary mail services

Temp Mail offers a solution for those seeking a short-term email address without the fuss of registration. This service shines when you're signing up for test accounts on websites, or simply trying to safeguard your main mailbox from potential spam. One of its handy features is the automatic deletion of messages after a set timeframe, so you don't have to bother cleaning it up. By using Temp Mail, you can dodge pesky spam, unwanted ads, and phishing attempts. While it's a free service that lets you promptly view incoming mails, it's essential to note that Temp Mail isn't meant for storing crucial or sensitive information.

MyTemp.email

MyTemp.email is your go-to service when you need a short-lived email address right at your fingertips. Great for one-off sign-ups, website tests, or just to shield your main email from those annoying spam messages. The user-friendly interface lets you view, save, or delete emails, and you decide how long they stick around. What sets MyTemp.email apart is the personalized touch — you're in the driver's seat when managing that temporary inbox. Best of all? It's free, no sign-ups, ensuring you stay anonymous while getting quick and dependable access to your messages. Just remember, it's designed for short-term use, not long-term storage.

Maildrop offers a straightforward way to whip up a temporary email without the fuss of registrations or passwords. Sporting a user-friendly interface, it's a breeze to get an address that lasts just long enough. And don’t worry about being flooded with junk mail — Maildrop got a nifty spam filter in place to keep those nuisances at bay. Plus, as it’s free and open-source, Maildrop is a top pick for those quick, throwaway email needs. Though it's perfect for one-off jobs, it's worth noting that protecting sensitive information isn't its strong suit.

Fake Mail Generator

Fake Mail Generator is a service that provides temporary email addresses to protect your main mailbox from spam and unwanted emails. It can be used to quickly and easily create a temporary address with a choice of a variety of domains, which gives additional authenticity to the address. Emails received at the temporary address are automatically deleted after 24 hours, keeping your inbox clean. The main advantage of Fake Mail Generator is its ease and speed of use, with no need to register or install additional software. Despite the temporary nature of the service, it provides a sufficient level of privacy for basic needs.

Guerilla Mail

Guerilla Mail is a free temporary email service that allows users to create a disposable mailbox, protecting the main address from spam and advertising mailings. The service is especially useful when registering on new websites or subscribing to newsletters, where there is a risk of receiving junk mail.

The user can choose a random address or create their own, and all incoming emails will be available for one hour, after which they are automatically deleted. It is possible to send emails from a temporary address, which makes Guerilla Mail a convenient tool for anonymous correspondence.

The service is easy to use and does not require registration or password entry. All e-mails are available directly in the web interface, and there is no need to install additional software.

ThrowAwayMail

ThrowAwayMail offers users the ability to generate disposable email addresses, ensuring their primary inbox remains free from unwanted spam and extraneous newsletters. This service is particularly advantageous when registering on new platforms, subscribing to mailing lists, or trialing services that might result in a barrage of promotional emails.

A distinctive feature of ThrowAwayMail is its persistence: the temporary address remains functional as long as the associated browser tab is kept open. However, users should be mindful that all emails will be automatically purged after a 48-hour window. Registration is not required to access the service, and personal details remain undisclosed. The platform boasts a straightforward and efficient interface, facilitating ease of use for all patrons. The service is offered at no charge, providing a practical solution for email management.

Mailinator offers a distinctive approach to temporary email services. It allows users to spontaneously generate email addresses without any registration or additional steps. These ad-hoc addresses are particularly useful for single-use registrations, website testing, and shielding your primary email from potential spam.

A notable feature of Mailinator is its automatic mailbox creation; any address directed to the mailinator.com domain instantaneously forms a mailbox once an email is received. While all incoming messages are accessible to the public for a short duration before deletion, it's essential to recognize the implications of this openness. Given the public nature of the mailboxes, Mailinator is not recommended for handling sensitive or private mail.

YOPmail offers a complimentary temporary email service, serving as an invaluable asset in safeguarding your primary email account from unwanted spam and potential phishing schemes. With YOPmail, users can either opt for a randomly generated email or customize one to their liking. These email addresses remain active for a duration of 8 days.

A distinguishing feature of YOPmail is its no-registration policy, meaning all emails directed to a specific address are accessible by anyone privy to that address. While this ensures swift and straightforward accessibility for ephemeral tasks, it's prudent to avoid using it for confidential or private mail communications.

A Tate Modern Retrospective Is Reclaiming Yoko Ono

“music of the mind,” refuses to let yoko ono remain history’s most 'famous unknown artist.'.

In 1964, Yoko Ono self-published an anthology of “instructions” entitled Grapefruit .

The work gave guidance on staging specific acts or visualizing certain scenes, all to radically empower readers to create—or become—an artwork.

The unusual text also helped inspire one of the greatest songs of all time.

A new retrospective dedicated to Ono at Tate Modern, “ YOKO ONO: MUSIC OF THE MIND ,” highlights her provocative, if often overlooked, artistic perspective. Whether staging a peaceful sit-in or being disrobed with scissors by an audience, Ono has asked us to imagine and participate together. Individual acts can lead to collective action Ono argues in her art.

Grapefruit , written between 1953 and 1963, was itself a groundbreaking work of conceptual thinking from the Japanese-American artist, one emblematic of the postmodern shifts from traditional notions of art. It featured so-called “scores” outlining directives—such as “Painting to be stepped on” and “Painting to be constructed in your head”—for readers to then enact. Ono’s final product was uniquely placed in an individual’s hands or dreamy imagination.

Sheet music and notes on yellowed paper

The unconventional book also shaped one of the most celebrated popular songs of all time: “Imagine.” Famed Beatle John Lennon (1940–1980) told the BBC in 1980 that “Imagine” was inspired by it:

Actually, that should be credited as a Lennon-Ono song because a lot of it—the lyric and the concept—came from Yoko. But those days I … omitted to mention her contribution. But it was right out of Grapefruit, her book. There’s a whole pile of pieces about “Imagine this” and “Imagine that.”

Owing to Lennon’s creative excision, and other racial and misogynistic politics leveraged at Ono, she never received widespread credit for her contribution to the acclaimed masterpiece. (The more popular and sensational question was whether the “dragon lady” broke up The Beatles .)

The U.K. exhibition features seven decades of works from the famously iconoclastic—if also famously “ unknown ”—artist. From recent large-scale text works (like 2021’s I LOVE YOU EARTH ), to recordings of infamous films (such as Bottoms from 1966-67), the show demonstrates Ono’s enduring preoccupation with imagination and its ability to imbue individual escape and collective empowerment. It also showcases the original typeset draft of Grapefruit (marking its first appearance in the U.K.), reminding us of Ono’s role in shaping the inspired anthem intoning for world peace.

The fact alone that the Tate Modern is mounting a comprehensive retrospective is sign enough of the institution’s noble effort to recuperate the artistic identity of this multi-faceted—and often publicly maligned—artist.

Born in Japan in 1933, Yoko Ono grew up in the nuclear aftermath of World War II, a time that ravaged her country as atomic bombs rained down on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. It was the safe and perpetual presence of the sky above—which Ono would often turn to for escapist comfort when lying in hiding—as a site of solace and possibility. The sky later became a central motif in her art, one representing limitlessness and freedom from Earth’s sometimes cruel hand.

It was the time living in New York in the 1960s, however, that galvanized Ono’s desire to allow the viewer to fantasize—with or without a sky—too. Early works asked that we project our own mental images onto blank canvases with prompts, such as in Grapefruit, or play an uncompetitive game of chess with only white squares and white pieces ( White Chess Set ). “Play as long as you can remember where all your pieces are,” were her instructions.

“Yoko upended the relationship between the artist and the audience,” says Juliette Bingham, Curator of International Art, who helped assemble the exhibition. “Yoko Ono is such a versatile artist and has worked in so many different ways to convey her message.”

Participation has remained key to Ono’s work and message, one that is a through-line from early pieces to contemporary efforts too. The impetus to ask us to experience the pleasures of our own abstract thoughts be energized to enact real social change, too.

A black and white photo of a woman sitting on an empty stage holding her clothing to her bosom

The exhibition features work like Cut Piece (1964), a filmed performance where spectators were invited to cut off her clothing, examining the objectification and socio-political control leveraged at women’s bodies. Add Colour (Refugee Boat) (2019), another participatory piece but produced decades on, presents a boat stationed in a white room instructing viewers to color the blank space and its structure blue and white. The piece asks us to consider the plight of refugees—often reviled in the media and othered by politicians—fleeing homelands to seek salvation in Europe.

The public perception of Ono may have been marked by misogyny and vilification during her years married to Lennon , but it was after his early death that Ono partly capitalized on the notoriety. Continuing the work that she had begun with him—like Acorns for Peace 1969, which saw the pair send acorns to world leaders—Ono continued to advocate for humanitarian causes via her art. Take her Wish Trees series (first begun in 1996 and featured again at the Tate today), an enduring project that seeks to engage the public to contribute personal wishes of world peace.

A woman prunes a tree inside a large gallery space with a video display in the background

Some may see it as a confected exercise but it’s a popular, wistful work that attracts many wanting to pin a note to the olive tree.

The message of peace might remain the same but its relevance in an age of new global conflicts, from Ukraine to Gaza, means new connections are formed by audiences. “What’s amazing is the way that people see and approach her work and how its meaning has changed over time,” Bingham told the Art Newspaper . “It changes over the decades because we bring a different context to it.”

“YOKO ONO: MUSIC OF THE MIND” is an inspired and enlightening project, one reclaiming the obscured, even overlooked, artistic achievements of Yoko Ono. It joins other recent projects, such as the docu-series Get Back , challenging the corrupted public image surrounding Ono and the past devaluation of her own artistry.

At seven decades of delivering disruptive creative endeavors, the way Ono continues to challenge notions of performance and the artist remains remarkable, now one rightfully honored by a major gallery in her lifetime.

While other artists have visualized onto a canvas, or projected into abstractions, Ono has always challenged viewers to see the imaginative potential in themselves. It’s only through collective imagination that united action can be found: “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.”

“ YOKO ONO: MUSIC OF THE MIND ” is on view at Tate Modern, London until September 1, 2024. Advanced booking is recommended.
